This is the best fighting game in the last 10 years. Visually stunning, engaging story mode, excellent mechanics. The game is incredibly beginner friendly, yet has a great skill curve where the potential for high level play is nearly limitless. I honestly haven't had this much fun with a game in a decade. The attention to detail is profound.

You wait 15 seconds until someone dragon boosts... You press O or B (Playstation or xbox) they get knocked in the air.. you spam all your combos, swap heros, spam combos again, swap heros, spam combos again... finisher move. Rinse wash repete.

I really wanted this game to be much much more then just a spam fest and the game being pretty much decided on who gets in the first hit but that is literally all it is. If your the first person to get hit you usually lose your first character and then lose the rest of the match. Thats it. That is the entirety of the online game play.

So what I mostly hate about it is that majority of your abilities are locked behind combo's where each character has only 2 abilities which can be used at any time. So compared to previous dragon ball games where you could spam freely abilities, you are very locked here.

it feels like all characters are similar to each other and that the abilities are just "filler" spells as everything is connected to combo's only.

I remember amazing dragon ball games back on psp's and playstations, then xenoverse got out, which actually was horrible too. so yeah definitely a **** game from my perspective.

Dragonball FighterZ is a very good and easy fighting game to pick up. It's great for new players and veterans alike. The combos are easy to learn, but pulling them off can be difficult. The action is fast paced and truly feels like you're watching a fight in Dragonball. The characters are true to the TV shows and cover Z and Super. Dragonball GT is ignored all together, which is the way that most fans like it, myself not included, but I'll sacrifice SS4 Goku for a game that shines brilliantly.

The music and voice acting are true to the shows in both English and Japanese, and neither language disappoints in any way.

The cast of characters is great and is scheduled to keep growing with more DLC. The only downsides are the 3 different selectable forms of Goku (one form being selected should lock out the other two I think) and the overwhelming presence of Kamehamehas that come out. Other than that, I don't have any complaints.

They even made Yamcha awesome for christ's sake! The guy that is the ass of every Dragonball joke is awesome in this game.

There are so many reasons to buy this game, I can't even wrap my head around them all. If you like fighting games and you don't have this game, go buy it. Buy it right now.

I've had my share of thoughts on "Dragon Ball" games before, and I've said my piece on the series as a whole, but those that have followed my game reviews know good and well that I'm an outsider to the "Dragon Ball" series as a show. I grew up on more of the "Yu-Gi-Oh!," "Digimon," and "Pokémon" crowd, and never really thought much of the "Dragon Ball" series. However, after seeing thisI've had my share of thoughts on "Dragon Ball" games before, and I've said my piece on the series as a whole, but those that have followed my game reviews know good and well that I'm an outsider to the "Dragon Ball" series as a show. I grew up on more of the "Yu-Gi-Oh!," "Digimon," and "Pokémon" crowd, and never really thought much of the "Dragon Ball" series. However, after seeing this game in action at E3 2017, I was actually kind of blown away by how fantastic it really looked. This didn't look like an ordinary fighting game, it looked like it was gonna be something really special, and with Arc System Works (the developers of highly-successful 2D fighters like "Guilty Gear" and "BlazBlue") at the helm, I had all the faith in the world that they would create a truly magnificent fighting game, and I must give them a shoutout for not only meeting my expectations, but surpassing them: this may well be one of the best 2D fighting games I've ever played.
"Dragon Ball FighterZ" takes the idea of being faithful to the source material and ups it to eleven: with such a visually-stunning artstyle, a story and characterization that feels like "Dragon Ball" should feel, and even the awesome option to play the dialogue in either English or Japanese, it really feels like there's something here for any and all fans of the series. And if you're like me and don't know a thing about the franchise, fear not, because all we're left with is a fighting game with kinetic and lively visuals, a huge cast of characters, and incredibly fast-paced gameplay, topped off by a deep combat system that's accessible for newcomers, and technical enough to make into a competitive fighter. You wanna know how energetic and fun the game is? A lot of the story mode can feel like padding, since you're essentially doing the same thing over and over, but with interesting difficulty curves and such frantic, fun, fast-paced gameplay (and of course, the great story cutscenes), this is a rare example where even the padding sections feel exciting and don't get repetitive!
This is it, this is the kind of game that I feel could very well be used as a benchmark on how to make a great 2D fighter. I feel like, when we look back on the eighth generation of gaming (and gaming in general, for that matter), this will be a video game that'll be a reminder of how you can make a great fighting game for almost any audience: fans of the source material, outsiders of the source material, casual fighting game fans, competitive fighting gamers, you name it, this is a game that has appeal to pretty much any group. And it just so happens to be a fantastically enjoyable video game, as well. I can't recommend it highly enough, go and play this game. Arc System Works, way to go. This is something special.

    - The story mode is actually pretty solid but far from great
    - Includes a loot box system but it really isn't that annoying and the option to buy them with real money doesn't exist

    Bad:
    - Dealing with lobbies is a huge chore, especially if you’re just in it for the single player content
    - Setting up matches with friends online is tedious and only works about half the time
    - The story mode doesn’t let you play as every character on the roster
    - All the collectibles are randomized so getting titles, color variations, and avatars that you actually want is rare

Bandai Namco has made this game for the fighting game fans, not "casual" players that only play the story mode or wants various single-player content, but simply for those who wants to play against each other by playing online or offline in a 3v3 tag system similar to the Vs franchise by Capcom.

That being said, the presentation of the game is by far the best aspect of the game, the graphics are extremely similar to the original material, meaning if you take a screenshot of the game, and put side by side by the anime, sometimes you couldn't tell the difference. The music of the game is also very good, not perfect or amazing, but well done.

The roster of the game is a bit disappointing, give there's only 24 characters in the base roster (which is few, given is a 3x3 game), but not only that, but there's many characters that feels the same, and very few of them feels unique (Android 21, Hit, Beerus), in addition to that there is some slots that could be utilized better (i'm looking at you Goku Blue, Goku SSJ and Goku Black).

Now to the gameplay aspect of the game, as mentioned it's similar to those familiar with games like Marvel vs Capcom, Guilty Gear and Blazblue, given the fact it was developed by Arc System Works, the same company that developed the last two games prior mentioned, meaning that mechanics like air dash, double jump, flashy supers and combos. And there's exactly where the game also starts to be a letdown, since it doesn't offer many defensive tools like Guilty Gear or Blazblue has, resulting in almost every character dealing blockstring situations, where if you opponent knows how to play, you won't press a button for like 10 seconds or more if you don't want to be "combo'd", there a pushblock mechanic, put it really doesn't work well like the games that has it like Marvel vs Capcom 3 or Under Night, where if you used well you could revert the situation. And the result of that is a game focused on pure offensive side, which is bad for competitive players.

The top 2 worse aspects of the game are the lack of a proper menu, since when you start the game you're put into a online lobby where you move around your character and select the options scrambled across the game that represents the menu options. And the major problem of this game as of the moment is a lack of functional online, since you get disconnect many times, you can't proper play in a lobby if your friends without some inconveniences, and sometimes you get get disconnected for no reason when you're playing a match, and the list goes on.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a good game, but it fails to deliver in some aspects like online play, lack of character variety and weak story mode, that compromises a game with excellent presentation and a solid gameplay (given a few flaws).

After Z ended many years ago, GT not really taking off in the US and the show being in flux, the Budokai and Tenkaichi series along with Team Fourstar really kept Dragonball alive and relevant in everybody's minds. Xenoverse became a thing, creating a character was a fantasy of many DB fans but despite all the advances in the games, they never quite hit the point where they would be called a great fighting game.

    Until now.

Dragonball Fighterz is one part Dragonball, one part Marvel vs Capcom and Arc system putting all there talent on display for the world to see. From the moment you start his game and turn it off it is dripping with style, Dragonball, anime and pure unfiltered hype. It features almost all of the norms from the genre, an arcade mode with varying pathways to take, practice, challenge, online battles, story mode etc.

Story mode is probably the only thing to really note out of those modes, it features an original story starring Android 21, a new character designed by Toriyama himself. The story see's all the heroes dealing with these clones who are stealing their power and is told through multiple arcs. Its a neat concept and the actual writing and structure is different than the standard character locked chapter based structure Netherrealm has established.

The gameplay itself is top notch. Featuring multiple auto combos, extremely simple commands for special and super attacks. Anybody can play this game, A complete novice can pick up a controller and within minutes will be final flashing people through buildings and landing 20 hit combos with ease.

The easy access doesn't mean the game is without depth. Stripping away the layer of complex controls opens up the game to the part that fighting games don't get too usually unless you are at a high level. the mind games.

Do i dragon rush? what if my opponent hits me with a down heavy to counter, do i vanish after starting a dash for a punish? Does he super instead? Maybe a tag switch to catch him off guard. The mind games and the back and forth when you're having a fun set with an opponent who starts to understand the game mechanics and puts stuff together to counter your moves is incredibly satisfying. Not since Soul Calibur has a simple session with friends turned into 3 or 4 hours vanishing from the clock and then realizing you haven't blinked for that whole time.

Despite how incredible everything about the game is, one gigantic flaw can not be ignored.

The online is a travesty. Matchmaking for casual and ranked fights works well enough, the game is pretty standard their and unfortunately doesn't enforce a strict 2/3 format in ranked play. The problem is, the above scenario I described above about playing with friends has only happened 3 times in over a week of playing.

Every day, at least two attempts per day, it barely works. Ring matches are the only way to play with friends, and just hasn't worked. The game is supposed to feature a 6 player party mode, but as of this writing the most people we could get into a room was 2 at a time. nowhere near the 6 needed for it. They have patched the game and brought servers down but the problem remains, on all platforms.

The online brings the game down a notch from the 5/5 it should get to a 4/5. a fantastic fighter first, and Dragonball game second. Arc system has created something new, fresh and exciting. Here is hoping the online gets fixed asap because right now its the only, but major fault in a brilliant game.

    Brilliant fighting game.

At first (because I usually don't play fighting games) I thought it was a simple game with auto-combo's, but when you watch videos of people on YouTube you'll quickly learn there is more to it than just hitting square-square-square or triangle a bunch of times. You really have to put in work to master the game and that's where the longevity comes into play.

(for me at least)

The reason it doesn't get a 10 from me is because of the whole lobby thing. Too much loading this and that just to start up a game. Loading lobby... Oh wait this lobby is full. Pick another one. Loading again. And then there is the whole people not starting a match so you just sit there staring at your screen for 60 seconds just because some guy isn't accepting the matchmaking session. I know that you can put it on automatic accept, which is what I did so I can put my controller down while it's searching and when I hear "HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER" I pick up my controller again.

But overall this is the best Dragon Ball game in a long time.

But that's where my praise for fighters ends, the story mode and lip sync for English voices were average at best, the lobby when connected online disconnects often, the game shouldn't be $60 consider the low character count, short story mode, and short arcade mode. The fact this game is receiving high reviews is disrespectful to old dbz games like tenkaichi 2&3 which gave you so much content and was more true to the dragon Ball anime. I'd recommend to buy this game at around$20-$30 for anyone not a 2d fighting game fan because this game is made for them instead of the dragon Ball fan. The counterargument is always that unique characters are best in a fighting game but dragon Ball is not your traditional fighting franchise if you want a fighting game with unique characters why not buy the other hundreds of 2d fighters out there why stamp the dragon Ball name to a game just so the people your targeting can have a crappy experience if they don't like the side scrolling 2d fighters? If your the casual dragon Ball fan there is not a lot of content there for you and the game will grow stale but 2d fighting fans will enjoy it. This is bandai namco's sad attempt to increase sales by getting dragon Ball fans to buy it by attaching dragon Ball to the game DON'T FALL FOR IT!!! Dragon Ball FighterZ is, undoubtly, one of the best games from the series.

For starting, its a 2.5D game, unlike Raging Blast or Xenoverse, but thats not bad! On the contrary, its really good and the gameplay feels fluid and just right.
On my point of view, the best part of the game is how loyal is to the anime/manga - the character moves are really really faithful to the fans. Super moves, combos, even the way they move is perfect.
The graphics are pretty solid too!
The story mode is quite simple. its very enjoyable, but simple, and the interactions between characters are quite interesting too. Once you finish story mode, you have arcade mode to play through.
The multiplayer is alright - i see some reviews saying ''your enemies spam the same attack, you just block, etc''. This is common in every fighting game! Have you ever played Street Fighter online? There are LOTS of people using Ryu and Ken and spamming hadoukens. It's not the game's fault, its the players!
The weak part of the game it's his ''small'' character roster. ITS NOT BAD, it's just small, but all characters avaiable, are useful. For example, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 or Xenoverse 2 had a lot of characters indeed, but once you unlock Gogeta SS4 or Vegito are you going to use Frieza Soldiers, Saibamen or whatever? I doubt it. However, that doesnt happen in Dragon Ball FighterZ , every characters is useful on its own way, I play more times with Captain Ginyu and Yamcha than i play with Gotenks or Goku Black! So, the point is, it has a small roster but you will use every character in it!
That's the reason i dont give it a 10/10: there's lacking of fan favourites characters like Vegito and Gogeta or Super Buu even thought theres the new character Android 21.

So, if you like fighting games, this one is a great one too! If you're a Dragon Ball fan, you will ABSOLETELY love it, however, dont expect a game like Xenoverse with many characters and customization!

It picks back up in the villain arc before feeling more repetitive until you start nearing the end of the 3rd arc. The online play is great when it works. There are a few hitches with things like Ring Matches require you to reboot the game if it tells you there's no rooms, but even the 6 player party match runs smoothly at an average of 4-5 frames of lag. Even with 6 different connections, it only slows down when you're perhaps playing with someone over seas in the party. Expand

Story is nothing and the cloned fights in it are annoyinh AF. The game looks great and runs great but gameplay seems way too fast and tbh you see this online. Feels like they didn't test it out at all. Matchmaking is completely broken as its based purely on points so you could lose all your matches and gather points slowly but still end up against someone with consecutive wins. 2) The loading times are horrible, 35- 45 seconds to load each match that lasts about one minute is beyond me. These load times should be half that. Too much damn time watching loading .

    3) Story is boring a fuk! Worst is the story cut-scenes lag and are not smooth. Very choppy cut-scenes take you out of watching the anime experience.

The fighting is solid and on point . Fast, frantic, fun but the longevity is something to take into question as most fighting games loose attention after a few months.

ONLINE GAMEPLAY: Absolutely horrid. I will say there was very little lag though, but my god that will not matter. With the "Newcomer Friendly" gameplay, it makes it almost impossible to play. You're opponent will spam the same moves.... over.... over... and over.... Sure if you "get good" you will learn to block certain attacks. However, combating designed game flaws does not equal enjoyment. Maybe if health bars were increased, and space was expanded it would be ok.

However, you have two imaginary walls on each side that your opponent will use to their advantage. There is a reason this particular style of gameplay has gone mostly to the wayside. You will consistently run into people who spam consecutive 64 hit combos with stacked ultimates or they use the borders to pop you up in the air while switching characters. It is truly infuriating. Sure I could spam the same defensive move to counter it over and over again, but WHERE IS THE FUN IN THAT????

Its an absolute spam fest, which is truly a shame since there is so many cool animations and cool fan service in this game. You may have watched the trailers, you may have watched the developers play the game, but that will not be your experience.

Rarely you are matched with a similar player who wants to enjoy the game for what it is, and those can be some really fun match-ups. You will also be paired with weaker opponents which can be fun so that you can do whatever you want... but thats 1/4. There is no real "skill" to this game.

The pacing of the fight takes away from all that could be great for this game. You will play this game for 2 days, and then you will never play it again. So, if you have $60 burning a hole in your pocket, and you want to drop the Zeni to get yourself immersed in Dragonball... Then go ahead. If you are a casual gamer who doesn't care about DragonBall, do not get this game!

After you get over the voice-overs and different color uniforms... it will wear thin. If you want Dragonball nostalgia with a TON of fan service, please go play Dragonball Xenoverse II,

Right out the gate the art style and flashy visuals may be the best ever seen in a fighting game and certainly the most accurate in a dragon ball game ever! The little touches show polish gleaming in every mode, menu option and character. The single player content is robust and satisfying. The AI can be a little all over the map and story mode can get a bit grindy but so does every fighting game ever. Unlockables are fun and cosmetic and easily earned through doing just about anything. Don't be put off by the fact that its a loot crate system, its implemented fairly and has no impact on the gameplay. The online and local play is where this game truly shines, the combat system is fun, fast and deep enough to reward practice. This isn't quite the depth level of a high profile Capcom fighter but still feels like a true competitive fighter at the end of the day. It's addicting, eye pooping gameplay with show accurate sounds, music and voices. They go the extra mile with features like robust replay lobbys, 3v3 team co-op matches and local play in-game tournament support. For someone like me both a big fan of Dragon Ball and the chaos of 3v3 brawlers, it doesn't get any better than this! Expand

This is an awesome fighting game, through and through. The controls are really smooth and its "easy to play, difficult to master" style set-up works perfectly.

My biggest complaint is how they're handling DLC. It all seems really expensive for what's on offer, but a lot of fighting games do this.

Quite possibly the best 2D fighter ever made. This is why we play games in the first place. There have been decent DB games before this, but nothing close to FighterZ. The animation, combined with artistic graphics really set it apart from other games and it also beautifully complements the gameplay. It's so brisk, and is one of the greatest technical achievements in the genre and can't be avoided

A Dragon Ball fighting game that we’ve been waiting for since forever loosing hope along the way. It was designed with obvious deep understanding of the source material, visually it’s almost undistinguishable from the anime and it embodies the 'easy to learn, hard to master' rule, which makes it both interesting for BlazBlue veterans and accessible to newbies lured by the Dragon Ball license. The single player modes aren’t particularly engaging, and the broken online makes engaging in the multiplayer take way longer than it needs to. Those lucky enough to have a thriving local fighting scene are the real winners here until the servers are sorted out. FighterZ isn’t entirely my thing, but it’s easy to see that it’s as well-made, polished, and fanservicey as humanly possible.
