Doom eternal is a fast paced, doesn’t waste your time, fast paced FPS that doesn’t disappoint. This game is the perfect sequel to doom 2016 and isn’t a copy paste of doom 2016 and is much more harder than the first one and doesn’t mess around. Soundtrack is back a just as exciting and has new demons that will challenge your skill to the max

So far I've seen several bad reviews here for a game that enjoyed a lot so I thought I'd add some of my commentary on the game. I'm a Doom fan, though not a fanboy to the point I'll suck the game off and ignore it's flaws. It's not a flawless game but it's a pretty damn good one, the best in the series for that matter. It deviates a lot from the Doom 2016, adding a lot more mobility and weapons. Essentially the Doom Slayer is given several new abilities each of them a more than welcome addition. Though I feel like the most welcome addition is the increased usage of the chainsaw. Ammo is something that is a bit more seldom than the previous games. Before you could simply sweep an entire level with the same weapon and call it a day but now you have to switch around and think fast in the middle of battle on which weapons you should use. I never really came across a point in time where I had no ammo, if you're lacking in ammo you simply chainsaw some fodder. You also have some increased mobility so you can be on the move a lot more. Since that's what made the previous games so good it's a welcome addition. Though I feel the biggest hinderance this game has is the platforming. Now in between firefights you'e usually given a platforming section. It's not horrendous but it's a bit out of place to say the least. It does take a lot away from the atmosphere and vibe of the game. But I feel like what makes this game best is the spectacle. Before you were tied to the same planet and space station now you're traveling between dimensions to these massive hellscapes littered with titans and mechs. The game also tries to build up some lore to the Doom world but it's entirely optional while it is sometimes shoved in your face. Overall if you enjoy Doom or FPS' in the slightest you'll love this game. Expand

    SPOILER ALERT
I'm on moment where you need to return Crucible Sword, and holy frick this episode is hard af, i'm tired of this **** there are too much enemies that are bosses or just almost impossible to kill if you don't have bfg ammo, which i lost few minutes before Titan moment.
Like marauder(or how it spells) , he is fuccin impossible in that location,, i can't, i just can't, i tried for half-hour, when i first met him i killed him faster!
So, if you want to play on "Hurt me plenty" lvl prepare for pain if you're not so pro gamer, mb i'm noob, cuz i always forget to use abilities like fire, or grenades, there are too much things to remember, i'm not talking 'bout enemies weak points, you need to know weak of every enemy, or u are dead.
Sorry for any mistakes writing while being too emotional after gameplay.

But now for the nitty gritty. This is meets my already high expectations from 2016 and then some.

Gameplay- lets just get it out of the way. Gameplay is magnificent. And it’s the main thing you’re here for. If you played 2016 you’ve got the basic building blocks for here. Now on top of the existing glory kills for health, we have the flame belcher for armor, and the chainsaw is still for ammo, except now it recharges and as such is more vital for the gameplay loop, which throws a lot of people off early game, the ammo caps are lower across the board and when you aren’t used to the new chainsaw, it’s hard to get used to. Simply, you have to git gud. That’s about it. Enemies are FAR more aggressive, you can’t just kinda run a big circle around the arenas and kill enemies as they come, big guys will hunker down and wait for you to come to them, and a certain late game mirror match enemy is built to pull you into his pacing rather then your own. That’s a controversial choice but I like it. My main issue is that some weapon mods come across pointless. The full auto shotgun seems great but with the new lower ammo cap it’s hard to feel safe using it, but maybe I’ll feel better with more time in it. Funnily enough the heavy machine gun’s mods flipped for me. I use the scope way more now than the micro missiles, due to a new mechanic I’ll detail in a moment. There’s also the new super weapon I won’t name, but it’s nice, it uses partial charges of the BFG shots and is more of a machine gun. It’s very interesting. On top of that is the crucible. That’s less of a spoiler, it’s all over the marketing. It’s three charges to instantly kill any enemy that isn’t resistant to super weapons. So specific mini boss enemies and bosses. It’s fun, though you get it just a bit too late for my taste. Also since the ammo is based on placed pickups it’s hard to justify using it in a map without them. Same with the bfg. But that’s a relatively minor issue I suppose. And for the new mechanic, any enemy classed as heavy and above has a specific weak point, that can be destroyed to seal off some of it’s attacks. For example, you can destroy the returning Revenant’s shoulder cannons to seal off his ability to fire missiles, making him use his melee attacks I genuinely think you would never see otherwise. (For good reason)
Graphics/performance- the game looks nice, idTech 7 is doing great, it runs like a dream where 2016 on idTech 6 struggles to maintain a consistent frame rate. Aside from some weird graphical artifacts tied to mist effects in one level, I didn’t see graphics mess up any, and I had exactly one crash the entire game and I couldn’t recreate it so it much have just been a fluke.
Story- As John Carmack, co-creator of Doom himself said “story in a game is like story in porn. You expect it to be there, but it’s not that important” and the writers clearly understand that, but left a story here that, if you want to see it, is enjoyable and leaves you wanting more for the confirmed dlc or a sequel that will no doubt come.
But wait there’s more. This game also includes a new pvp mode called Battlemode. It’s one slayer with 90% of his arsenal (no super weapons without special circumstances) vs two demons, picked from the super heavy class, I believe. The Marauder, Pain Elemental, Mancubus, Revenant, and Archvile. Bit of a limited roster, but I think it’s just right, and leaves room for the mode to expand it. Demons play more or less like the 2016 MP demon summons did, except now they have four skills to use, either buffs/debuffs or summoning smaller demons, such as hell knights, prowlers etc. One side wins by killing the other, and the demon players respawn so slayer has to kill two demons at once. Winner is first to 3 wins, if it gets to the last two of five rounds the game opens up a second tier of upgrades to choose one of, things like summoning a baron of hell for the demons or giving the slayer the BFG. It’s loads of fun if you get a genuinely balanced matchup of similar skill levels, but is just a slog if you end up totally outmatched, like any pvp game. Overall, it’s a nice side mode, but I hope that unlike 2016 it’s not the focus, the single player should be. But don’t ignore battlemode, it’s fun and deserves new content as well.
Ultimately, this is a strong candidate for the arbitrary game of the year award, and I hope it grows even more over the rest of the year with the promised dlc

Runs at 60 fps on ps4 so that is always worth high praise. Only downside is can be a bit tough on to play on the controller , as it feels like it has been designed with a keyboard and mouse in mind.

Plus you get the option of hdr no matter what version of ps4 you have (base or pro). Multiplayer is lacking overall , dont see that mode having a long lifespan. There are Single player Dlc's Planned so that is always welcome

Another thing is the platforming now their is a bit but I wouldn't call it a Mario game as some people were saying or that hard at least for me. For the story their are cutscenes but their skippable and theirs not that many of them so don't listen to anyone telling you otherwise. The story itself is confusing if you're just looking at the cutscenes however all of the full story is inside the codex entries which is going to effect your enjoyment if you like reading through lore thankfully I do but for other people that is to keep in mind. The only real negatives I have is that the MP gets boring after a few matches for me and for people looking for a classic deathmatch experience sadly is not hear but other then that Doom Eternal is the best FPS game I played this year for me. I thought this game was gonna be good, but I didn't expect it to be THIS good.

    1) Combat

The developers have stated again and again in interviews that they want this game to elicit similar strategies to a game of chess. Each enemy type having specific strengths and weaknesses. And I must say: they succeeded. This idea came through beautifully in the finished product!

And it wasn't just the enemies. The Slayer's moveset had some more strategy put in as well! Most notable is the lack of ammo in your reserves. You have very little ammo in this game and you're constantly running out. However, this actually comes off as a plus. Why? Because it gives you the opportunity to unleash your chainsaw on the closest demon fodder! What's more, is that your chainsaw fuel constantly recharges on it's own (and rather quickly too) so you'll never be without ammo if you play your cards right.

    2) Style Change

There's been a slight, but very noticeable, style shift from the last Doom game. Its surprisingly silly and cartoony, and I'm kinda into it. A lot more Demon punching slapstick. Plus, the ammo/health pickups greatly resemble the original, magical, floating Doom pickups, giving it a more cartoony/fantasy vibe. A bit of an adjustment from Doom (2016), but all in the service of making the game more arcade fun.

And a bit of a side note: Eternal is a whole lot more colorful, and I totally dig it.

    3) Exploration / Level Pacing

In Doom (2016), my biggest problem with the game was that the levels were a slog to get through. This was mostly caused by the fact that I was constantly switching between a combat mindset and an exploration mindset. I'd complete a combat encounter, then explore the area for collectables. This slowed the game down to a crawl.

In Eternal, this isn't a problem. I can safely skip all the collectables in a level and focus on the combat. Why? Because of the simple addition of fast travel; unlocked near the end of each level. Once I reach the end of a level, I can fast travel back to key sections and find everything I need to make my inner collector happy!

And if you don't care about searching the level for weapon upgrades, you can skip exploration entirely! You're awarded these through combat challenges as well. So don't worry if you're not into playing hide n' seek with collectables.

    4) Story

Probably the most divisive part of the game are the prominince of the story and cutscenes. Not to worry! If you're not into that, they aren't essential to you're enjoyment, and they're completely skippable. (Except for the opening 30 seconds, but it's not story based or anything like that.)

Of course, if you're like me, you will be very interested to see where the story goes. There's a whole lotta story beats involving the Slayer's past that I think y'all will like. I certainly did. Anyways, its kept rather vague, so if you want to know everything, better bust out those Codex entries.

However, if you're not interested at all in the story there are still some Codex entries you might get a kick out of! Take a look at "History of the Sentinals - Part IX" (Last 2 Paragraphs), "History of the Sentinals - Part XIV" (All of It), and "Super Shotgun" (Last Paragraph). All of those are pretty badass.

    5) Summary

The only thing keeping it from a 10/10 are some minor nitpicks. This game is amazing and I highly recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Keep in mind, I can't review the multiplayer part cause I don't have PS+ k thx)
So, I guess I'll just parrot what a lot of people are saying. DOOM Eternal is a fantastic game from start to finish. I'll keep it *mostly* spoiler-free for those who have somehow not played it yet. However, there will be some ahead, so you've been warned. Okay, I'll start with pros.

    Pros:
    - Great campaign with a solid approach to its simple story, being heavily supported by surprisingly-detailed lore.
    - Some of the best FPS gameplay I've ever had the pleasure of taking part in. Combat is extremely satisfying and intense, the controls are just right, movement is very fluid and fast-paced, enemy variety is high enough to keep things fresh, the weapons are a blast to use, the shortened amount of ammo means you'll have to actually use your chainsaw for more than just saving fuel to kill bigger demons, like before, and glory kills are better than they were in Doom 2016 (or DoomK16, which is what I affectionately call it). This is a brutal arena-oriented shooter that will require focus and strategy. It's far more involving than before, and I love it for that. Get used to the mechanics, and you'll Rip and Tear in no time.
    - The collectibles make it worth searching every nook and cranny for them, especially if you wanna go for all of them, as you may get nice rewards out of doing so, such as being able to play the original DOOM, once you unlock all the cheat codes. You can also get DOOM 2, but I'll let you Google how with that one, should you choose.
    - The platforming, while a bit less naturally-flowing with the levels than it was in DoomK16, can be good fun to nail.
    - The soundtrack. That is all I need to say about it. Major kudos to everyone involved in it.
    - There's some spoiler-heavy moments that I think would be quite a treat for those who have previously played Doom.
    - The boss fights are oftentimes more engaging and fun than before, especially the final boss.

A couple neutral points that I think would be crucial information:
-There's a particular enemy type that *will* throw things on its head and make it far more difficult for those unable to keep up with its unique combat style, that being the Marauder. While it can be slaughtered easily, provided you know what you're doing, it may be a negative, due to some of its mechanics being particularly bothersome, especially that daggum dog.
    - This game can feel a bit more arcadey than the previous game, especially with the extra lives and cheat codes. While I don't see this as a bad thing at all; in my view, it's more fun. However, it can be something worth pointing out.

    Now for the cons:
    - The purple goo and swimming is a major hindrance to the fun factor of the game. *HOWEVER*, it is brief, thankfully, so it's not too big of a problem. Still an unnecessary roadblock, though.
    - I've run into a couple technical issues that were immersion breakers, or just plain annoying. Rarely, it seems that the textures haven't loaded in. However, walking into it seems to fix the problem. I've also crashed a few times, but it wasn't the biggest deal for me.
    - Although I like the boss fights, that they have fodder demons to back them up kinda takes the immersion of engaging in a 1-on-1 fight away some. It makes more sense with the final boss, and *maybe* the penultimate one as well, but otherwise, I wish they could just provide ammo drops upon exploiting weak points or surpassing a damage threshold, like it was with DoomK16.

So yeah, fantastic game overall. id Software absolutely hit it out of the park compared to DoomK16, which I think would probably look worse for me on repeat playthroughs. Not that it isn't a game worth playing anymore, but it's jarring the night-and-day difference both games have. Where Doom Eternal takes a step back, it seems to take three-five steps forward. A fantastic game that is well worth your money. This is how you make a sequel.

DOOM ETERNAL is a very dynamic and interesting game, it keeps you on your toes all the time, the world in which the action takes place is well revealed, a wide range of weapons, from the usual shotgun to the destructive BFG, it is very pleasant to shoot. Perfectly made demons, pieces of their flesh are scattered on the battlefield and it looks really spectacular. The plot is related to the previous parts, but even without playing them, you can figure out what's what as the game progresses. There are many customization options available: costumes for the main character, victory poses, introductions, coloring books for weapons. The multiplayer component is done well, a lot of interesting mechanics, we are given to play for 5 different demons and it is very interesting. Demons can also be customized. At the same time, the game is not perfect, I encountered a couple of unpleasant bugs that made me go through some levels, and sometimes even the entire game. Expand

This game is like a fine double tall cocktail on a friday night. Over the top gameplay that allows good players to be good, and yet remains accessible to newbies is a testament of quality from our boys and girls over at id. I can't wipe the dumb childish grin off my face that this game cultivates, and I dont want to.

There aren't playstyles in modern Doom so much as players who use absolutely everything, and players who die. [Issue#346, p.84]

A love letter to the classic series written in blood, Doom Eternal is a fast-paced and utterly thrilling way to paint the town (and Mars, and ethereal realms) red. [Issue#174, p.89]

I enjoyed the ending, but it was so long. I had to wipe the sweat off my forehead. But it felt so good to be done.
