Good direction of the DOOM series.
The start was fast, though the rune upgrades came a bit late - it felt like a slow grind until I got the movement speed upgrades.
But from there on it was a blessing to finally play an actual video game after many years, and it was like that for the most part.

I like the try on creating a more dense and indepth game world around the doom slayer.

Execution-wise D.E. feels like a mix of Doom 2016 and Q3A. They finally incoporated all the fast paced mechanics and induced it with the Doom world. The beginning feels very harsh and can be bothering for newcomers. After you geared up a bit and know the mechanics and the gameplay cycles its getting way better but stay intense. I only played it on Hurt me plenty, but it felt the appropriate mix of challenge and fun.

Some of the mechanics feel a bit overused and unnecessary. I m no fan of the huge section where you have to jump, grab, transfer and crawl around. Some are really frustrating for me and I feel it could be very painful for beginners. Weapon masteries are okay-ish same goes to challenges. With a bit of exploration and patience you will be maxed out around level 10/13 which feels good. The game feels hard to handle on console because you enemies are rock, paper, scissors-like on the equivalent weapons. So you have to switch around a lot and in between kill fodder for replenish of armor and ammo. This could ve been reduced a little bit I feel in general.

The weapons are fun, levels are huge, intense and also interesting in design. I liked them a lot. Playtime is pretty long for campaign only with around 15hrs. Performance on my PS4 Pro with SSD was outstanding. I had one bluescreen, the rest was fine, no bugs at all. Graphics are really good and loading times were quick.

I want to give this game a 9 but it only deserves 8 points because of said shortcomings. Some enemies and game loops are obviously not optimized for consoles which is a bit sad. Maybe they can enhance this a bit in a successor and lower the grind-gunplay. Then this game would be a 9-10 for me.

Simply better than Doom 2016. I like games where I have to closely manage myself and use everything at my disposal to overcome situations. Doom Eternal does exactly that, sort of like a survival-action game if that makes sense. The game is just an absolute power fantasy you feel like the most bad ass guy around. People bash the game for lots of things but none of them feels justified. MostSimply better than Doom 2016. The game is just an absolute power fantasy you feel like the most bad ass guy around. People bash the game for lots of things but none of them feels justified. Most of them just hate it for being different from 2016. You see in 2016 about the only challenge in the game was the damage the enemies dished out, you basically never ran out of ammo so you could just pick a weapon and blow through the game with it. You had the chainsaw to replenish your ammo if need be but you never had to because the levels were littered with ammo health and armor. That's not to say that I didn't like it, it's just that eternal just flat out better in every regard, the levels have way less resources so you absolutely need to use everything you have to win and the game throws twice the amount of enemies at you to deal with . It's also much more video-gamey in a sense that there are lots of retro elements in it. Like all sorts of hazards that you have to navigate, platforming sections and extra lives to collect. It's much more colourful, and the overall aspect of the game is more like a cool 90s action cartoon, just with gallons of blood. It's much more story heavy it expands upon the lore that was in 2016 but not in a way that would come in expense of gameplay its really well balanced. It seems that the people at id software sat down and said "you know what let's make f*cking videogame, not a cinematic experience, no, an awesome videogame." And that is what it feels like to play Eternal, a really cool and very challenging game. Some players are complaining about a certain enemy that ruins the flow of the game... I have no idea why they feel this way. Every enemy presents a unique challenge that you constantly need to be aware of and deal with them accordingly. It feels very polished and everything serves a purpose. I absolutely understand what Id software tried to accomplish with this game, and they nailed it. If you thought that doom 2016 was good but something was just amiss, then Eternal will be right up your alley. I will not give it a perfect score because there are some minor gripes I had with the game, like some glory kills would not register correctly so I had to replay a level so I can complete the level challenge and one or two weapons or weapon mods are just not that interesting to play around with but that could be a personal issue. All in all Doom Eternal is just a flat out good time. 9/10 Expand

It took everything that doom 2016 introduced, made it bigger and better and introduced superb movement mechanics. Not only that, but it feels like a proper sequel, that doesn't pamper newbies like 2016 had to. This is what Quake was meant to be back in the 90s, a supreme followup to Doom.

Had a blast with this game! The gameplay has been revised since Doom 2016, with a bigger focus on resource management. Weapons have less ammo and you have to use various equipment to make enemies drop health, armour and ammo. Initially this could make you feel like it's imbalanced if you don't take the time to understand the mechanics. But once you get into the habit of using the chainsawHad a blast with this game! The gameplay has been revised since Doom 2016, with a bigger focus on resource management. Weapons have less ammo and you have to use various equipment to make enemies drop health, armour and ammo. Initially this could make you feel like it's imbalanced if you don't take the time to understand the mechanics. But once you get into the habit of using the chainsaw for ammo, flame belch to make enemies drop armour and cryo grenades to make them drop health, it creates a satisfying frantic loop of maintaining your resources while staying in the fight. The reduced max ammo does mean you can't just spam your fav weapon now, so you're encouraged to switch it up. Especially since they've given each weapon specific advantages over certain demons. For example: a shotgun grenade will instantly put a cacodemon into the glory kill state. The weapons and demon designs have been revised to more accurately resemble the doom 2 variants. This is a welcome change! It's great seeing the original cyber demon design (now called tyrants)
There is now a bigger focus on platforming to keep players engaged between fights. This can be hit or miss for me. Sometimes it's a fun diversion, other times an annoying time waster. It has a much more arcade feel, between the super mario platforming and weapon/secrets appearing as big floating brightly lit icons. Also it's a confetti explosion when enemies drop supplies. It does take away from the grit that was in the previous game, although Eternal still has the brutal levels of violence you'd expect.
The story is not very interesting tbh, it's icing on the cake at best and a series of wasted potential at worst. The lore entries you find scattered about sound more interesting than what we play through. We get to read about this huge defence made by earth's forces against the demons, but when the game begins the defence has already fallen. This means we play through barren areas with no survivors or huge battles. Instead we get to see the leftover remains of the battles that happened. You'll see things like dead bodies and destroyed giant mechs in the distance. But it feels like we missed the most exciting part of the story.
Overall it's a super fun game, with an average story but much improved gameplay. Although the platforming is hit or miss, the combat is better than ever. Also the soundtrack is amazing and Mick Gordon outdid himself here.

The only complaint I have for this game is that guns are pickups, unlike Doom 2016 and that there's some 3 second cutscenes here and there that kind of interrupt the flow but it really doesn't matter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Keep in mind, I can't review the multiplayer part cause I don't have PS+ k thx)
So, I guess I'll just parrot what a lot of people are saying. DOOM Eternal is a fantastic game from start to finish. I'll keep it *mostly* spoiler-free for those who have somehow not played it yet. However, there will be some ahead, so you've been warned. Okay, I'll start with pros.

    Pros:
    - Great campaign with a solid approach to its simple story, being heavily supported by surprisingly-detailed lore.
    - Some of the best FPS gameplay I've ever had the pleasure of taking part in. Combat is extremely satisfying and intense, the controls are just right, movement is very fluid and fast-paced, enemy variety is high enough to keep things fresh, the weapons are a blast to use, the shortened amount of ammo means you'll have to actually use your chainsaw for more than just saving fuel to kill bigger demons, like before, and glory kills are better than they were in Doom 2016 (or DoomK16, which is what I affectionately call it). This is a brutal arena-oriented shooter that will require focus and strategy. It's far more involving than before, and I love it for that. Get used to the mechanics, and you'll Rip and Tear in no time.
    - The collectibles make it worth searching every nook and cranny for them, especially if you wanna go for all of them, as you may get nice rewards out of doing so, such as being able to play the original DOOM, once you unlock all the cheat codes. You can also get DOOM 2, but I'll let you Google how with that one, should you choose.
    - The platforming, while a bit less naturally-flowing with the levels than it was in DoomK16, can be good fun to nail.
    - The soundtrack. That is all I need to say about it. Major kudos to everyone involved in it.
    - There's some spoiler-heavy moments that I think would be quite a treat for those who have previously played Doom.
    - The boss fights are oftentimes more engaging and fun than before, especially the final boss.

A couple neutral points that I think would be crucial information:
-There's a particular enemy type that *will* throw things on its head and make it far more difficult for those unable to keep up with its unique combat style, that being the Marauder. While it can be slaughtered easily, provided you know what you're doing, it may be a negative, due to some of its mechanics being particularly bothersome, especially that daggum dog.
    - This game can feel a bit more arcadey than the previous game, especially with the extra lives and cheat codes. While I don't see this as a bad thing at all; in my view, it's more fun. However, it can be something worth pointing out.

    Now for the cons:
    - The purple goo and swimming is a major hindrance to the fun factor of the game. *HOWEVER*, it is brief, thankfully, so it's not too big of a problem. Still an unnecessary roadblock, though.
    - I've run into a couple technical issues that were immersion breakers, or just plain annoying. Rarely, it seems that the textures haven't loaded in. However, walking into it seems to fix the problem. I've also crashed a few times, but it wasn't the biggest deal for me.
    - Although I like the boss fights, that they have fodder demons to back them up kinda takes the immersion of engaging in a 1-on-1 fight away some. It makes more sense with the final boss, and *maybe* the penultimate one as well, but otherwise, I wish they could just provide ammo drops upon exploiting weak points or surpassing a damage threshold, like it was with DoomK16.

So yeah, fantastic game overall. id Software absolutely hit it out of the park compared to DoomK16, which I think would probably look worse for me on repeat playthroughs. Not that it isn't a game worth playing anymore, but it's jarring the night-and-day difference both games have. Where Doom Eternal takes a step back, it seems to take three-five steps forward. A fantastic game that is well worth your money. This is how you make a sequel.
    9/10.

    Insane FPS!
After 20+ hours and the final battle I felt literally exhausted. The gameplay pace is insane especially on the higher difficulties. Demons slaying is super satisfying. New strategic layer demanding using different weapons against different monsters/weak points is an improvement imo.
While Doom 2016 looks and feels more serious/realistic, this one is a pure entertainment!

Loved it's art direction, color palette, arcade-ish approach to pick-ups and UI. If you want some true si-fi horror go (re)play Dead Space, where you are constantly haunted... In Doom Eternal they are haunted, because a Doom Slayer entered the facility!
Loved both Doom 2016 & Eternal but find the latter more fun and addicting.
Why 8/10? For two reasons: forced platforming/jumping often annoys, and the game is too short for the money (paid 99 eur for deluxe). More end game activities and/or progression would be appreciated. I know it sounds like a heresy to orthodox gamers, but RPG elements & loot would fit perfectly such game as Doom Eternal. That would truly make it eternal!

While I recently went back to play the first two “DOOM” games and felt that they showed a bit of their age, both are still very enjoyable and I can totally understand why “DOOM” is considered a classic. In 2016, id Software decided to revitalize the series with their “DOOM” reboot, which was a massive hit: I would even go as far as to call 2016’s “DOOM” one of the best shooters in recent memory, and easily one of the best FPS titles of this generation. So, when “DOOM Eternal” was announced, my hype was through the roof: sure, Bethesda has been on a bit of a cold-streak with games like “Fallout 76,” “Rage 2” and “Wolfenstein: Youngblood” receiving reviews that ranged from mixed to extremely negative, but a part of me had a feeling that “DOOM Eternal” would be the shot in the arm Bethesda needed. And sure enough, it is: dare I say, for as much as I just praised the last “DOOM” game, “DOOM Eternal” actually stands even taller and not only lives up to the last entry, but even surpasses it (no easy task indeed).
“DOOM Eternal” retains a lot of what made 2016’s “DOOM” work so well: it’s extremely faithful to the legacy of the “DOOM” franchise, yet still featuring plenty to entice gamers that may have never experienced the classic “DOOM” games. I also appreciate a lot of the game’s references to “DOOM II,” with the return of a number of enemies and gameplay ideas that propped up in that game, making this almost feel like a “DOOM II” for a new generation. That said, while “DOOM II” to me felt a bit like “DOOM More” compared to the first “DOOM,” “DOOM Eternal” doesn’t feel like that: the game makes several great changes and adds a number of new things to the gameplay that help it feel even better than the last one. The gameplay is even faster than before, the gunplay remains as smooth as ever, with a lot of weapons receiving fantastic upgrades that make them even more fun to use, there are several new weapons that are extremely fun to use, and the level design is even tighter than before. 2016’s “DOOM” already had some great level design to it, but I feel like “DOOM Eternal” comes through with some even more varied levels and areas, and they’re a pleasure to explore. The game also relies on platforming quite a bit, something the original “DOOM II” also did, but here, I think the platforming is smooth and controls well, and it feels more layered than “DOOM” games of the past. Visually, the game is still an absolute stunner, with some of the best graphics out there today, the soundtrack is still a blast, the combat is even more tense than before, and there’s a nice added challenge to the game, even if you play it on the lower difficulties like I did. The campaign is also a rip-roaring good time that feels even beefier than before, and getting to play as the demons themselves is a fantastic concept that’s executed very well.
I honestly can’t think of too many problems I had with the game. I know some critics have felt that some of the additions to the arsenal felt a bit overwhelming to manage, but to me, I totally enjoyed that, and I think a lot of the new additions, like the flamethrower, rechargeable chainsaw, dash button, and climbing ability, just motivated me even more to want to learn the game. In terms of other flaws…maybe the excitement that the game provides might make you headbang so hard that you get overly-excited and give yourself a nosebleed? Yeah, that’s the best I’ve got.
All in all, “DOOM Eternal” rises above its already-fantastic predecessor and continues to establish why the new “DOOM” games belong in a first-person shooter masterclass. “DOOM Eternal” pushes the series forward in meaningful ways, and honestly might even stand tall as the best entry in the franchise (I still have a few “DOOM” games to play, so talk to me about that later, but as of right now, “DOOM Eternal” is my favorite). Definitely give this game a shot, it’s well worth your time. With how much Bethesda has slumped as of late, leave it to id Software to pick up the pieces of their struggles and make something that’ll hopefully breathe some new life into the company. Whether or not they improve as a result is yet to be seen, but at least we can safely say “DOOM Eternal” will definitely be one of this year’s best games, and one of the best shooters of this generation of gaming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story: The story is kinda of generic but in depth for a Doom game. The lore is very rich and interesting, and you don’t need to read much of the codex unless you really care, there’s just a lot of inferring to go off of from some dialogue. The Doom slayer is just a mortal that was so angry that he somehow broke into the sentinels homeworld and won trails of combat to be indued with the powers of a god, and world his way into running an army against the demons in the unholy crusades to end in a truce where the demons get to feast on Earth so the Kahn Makyrs world survives, but doom guy isn’t having it as he is from earth. This is a very interesting backstory and setup to the events of this game after Dr. Hayden opens a gateway for them to go through, also the “Rip and Tear” dialog in the flashback scene was a nice reference. However, the game starting off with the Slayer just having a fortress, killing hell priests and having Vega was never explained, while the first game had little explanation to how you got there, that was fair as the game had no reason to explain it as there wasn’t much of a story, and as I was hoping this game would explain how you got to the tomb in the beginning of the first game, it doesn’t, which was a little disappointment. Dr. Hayden being reduced to an exposition dump was also a low point. How fires he know so mich? Why was he helping the humans? “How is he made of the same kind of parts or whatever that allows him to contact with the maykr-made fortress? Why didn’t he take over the fortress when Vega and the slayer were gone (which would’ve been cool)? Maybe I’m asking too many questions, but this game set up so much that it didn’t answer. All in all though, the story kept me playing and interested.

Environment: Absolutely astonishing. The Fortress of Doom alone is a staple of how beautiful this game is. The attention to detail and countless references and easter eggs is breathtaking and shows how much care the developers put in for fans and new players. Being able to walk along a mechs laser sword to parlor inside a demon titans stomach is just as badass as it should be.

Gameplay: This is the meaty stuff. While 2016 was simple and I very much enjoyed its simplicity, going into this game knowing about all the equipment I was skeptical about if it was all going to be overwhelming. While at the start it took some getting used to, as all things do, I quickly got the hang of it and felt like a literally god taking out the slayer gates at one go. The glory kill, flame blech, chainsaw, bloodpunch mechanices all worked in perfect harmony. The demons having specific weak points were also a welcome change, however by the end your amount of weapons and upgrades sorta make some of those meaningless. The only enemy I have a problem with, and some of you might as well, is marauders. Marauders themselves are not completely painful, I just end up wasting my chainsaw on fodder for ammo on them. The problem I have was the Taras Nabad secret encounter with one. It was so bad I had to cheese it since it’s almost impossible to kill one in 30 seconds. Other than that, the music combined with endless demon shredding with swords and big **** guns and quick movements is what I came here for.

All in all 9.5/10 and easily the best shooter I’ve ever played

The story works for what it is but is ultimately not what you cane for and the game treats it as such, it's all over the place and pretty crap but really that's not why you play doom.

Now the multiplayer is fun too but lacks some character? I dont know how to describe it but it's only fun for a few moments but then begins to drag for a while. The only thing holding this back from a 10/10 is the removal of Snap Map, Snap Map is what gave DOOM [2016] replayability and near endless content, but without the mode I find no reason to keep playing this after the campaign is complete. Please ID, just bring back Snap Map

The key to personal growth is acknowledging that your own opinion doesn't reflect reality, but rather your ideals and expectations, changing which is what growth is.

Doom Eternal gameplay is phenomenal and there is nothing i can play right now that satisfies the same urges this game manages to scratch at the same level of quality . It is very unfortunate that some people dislike platforming and puzzles, but they are impeccably designed. Gameplay flow is streets ahead of DOOM'16 (which was the best shooter until now). This game takes you by the neck and throws you into the thick of it. For those who've missed DOOM'16 things might prove difficult to adjust to, but judging by what i've seen people mention even experienced players have trouble adjusting to the new game. It's a shame because they fixed problems i never thought existed in the original. Doom Eternal has the best pacing despite having extremely long levels that usually take me up to 2 hours to complete. Yet the exploration pillar is so tight i never missed a single collectible (except for the empyrean keys, that i usually rerun levels for). And yes i've been replaying levels many times because they are that good and practicing this game feels very rewarding. Things i can do now, that i never dreamed of doing before..and on the controller!

I can go on at length about everything they did right, but you've probably gathered that i love the game already. The only thing i have problems with are the arena ending cutscenes. I dislike cutscenes in general, expecially in FPS games that break out of First Person. Most of them in Doom Eternal are very short and to the point, some are even hilarious, and the longest are still in First Person so it's fine. But in some arenas there are cutscenes that show you that the door opens. This feels like a design mistake to me as i often experienced it in the middle of jumping or doing something meaningful and it's a bad feeling of losing control over your character.

Other than that it is the best FPS ever, probably the best game of the year and most importantly the most badass game of the decades. Please ignore the haters who think that this game deserves a 0 or a 1 - they are blinded by misguided hatred that they themselves irrationally fueled. Review bombers should burn in hell, because Doom Slayer is coming for them to Rip & Tear!

After finishing Doom 2016 earlier this year, I was excited to see what Doom Eternal would do and I can say I was not disappointed. Doom Eternal improves upon what was in Doom 2016 and then some, the movement has been improved greatly with the new dash ability which made demon killing easier and cooler too. The weapons and the mods have been overhauled giving more variety in my demon killing arsenal, compared to Doom 2016 where I normally stuck to a certain weapon, mainly the super shotgun. But in Eternal, every weapon and mod has its use, the precision bolt having probably be biggest glow up due to effective against certain enemies and enemy parts, and also has a satisfactory pop sound with every headshot.

the story of Doom eternal is Pretty good, I wouldn't say the story blew me away but it was definitely good, but I didn't really come to Doom Eternal for a story, as John Cormack said himself "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."
But one of the main driving factors for my excitement for Doom Eternal was the soundtrack by composer Mick Gordon who once again knocks it out of the park, the soundtrack gets you pumped and gets you ready to rip and tear, the mixture of electronic and heavy metal as well as a heavy metal choir occasionally appearing in certain tracks really gets the adrenaline pumping and makes you feel unstoppable, my personal favourite tracks from the soundtrack are Gladiator or BFG10000.

The demons of Doom are back and meaner than before, with new demons joining the party too. personal favourites of mine like cacodemon and Barons of hell looking better than ever, though my all time favourite demon the Revenant didn't seem to get that sort of treatment, actually looking better and creepier in Doom 2016 compared to eternal.

Though this game is really good, there are a few things I wasn't a fan of unfortunately. I wasn't a fan of the marauder enemies, now I can imagine there will be those who say that I should just "git gud" and you’re probably right, they just frustrated me a bit too much sometimes but I might have to possibly try another method I haven't thought of to easily dispatch them. The other complaint that I would have would be having certain aspects of the levels that slow or limit the slayers movement speed, I just feel it's weird to have the game basically telling you to do things fast and punishing you for being slow to then slow you down for certain parts which just sit well with me for some reason. these are little complaints I have but besides that there isn't much wrong I can say about it, the gameplay and mechanics are basically perfect I can't fault them.

the multiplayer is an interesting idea which I hope id software keep building upon and don't forget about it, I don't think theres much of bias on who's more likely to win, slayer or demon. though it does feel great playing the demons with their unique abilities. from all the Battlemode games I've played, I've had about equal demon and slayer game time and had similar win rates as I kinda felt it was hard to lose really, I don't know if the people I was getting paired against were just trying it out for the first time but I have lost a match yet. But despite that I still like the game mode and is a much better multiplayer mode than the multiplayer in Doom 2016 and I'm glad the tried something new.

Overall, Doom Eternal is probably my favourite fps game of this console generation, its weapon mechanics and gunplay are faultless, the music gets you pumped the slay demons, the demons are challenging and fun to fight against, and the multiplayer is a nice change of pace compared to other multiplayer modes.

Another thing is the platforming now their is a bit but I wouldn't call it a Mario game as some people were saying or that hard at least for me. For the story their are cutscenes but their skippable and theirs not that many of them so don't listen to anyone telling you otherwise. The story itself is confusing if you're just looking at the cutscenes however all of the full story is inside the codex entries which is going to effect your enjoyment if you like reading through lore thankfully I do but for other people that is to keep in mind. Mechanically, the game is very similar to Doom 2016, the only major difference being a great reduction in available ammo pickups in order to force the player to use the chainsaw mechanic more often. This change makes combat far more tactical than in the past, as in addition to the ammo mechanic change, the guns have been balanced and now force the player to continuously cycle through their arsenal to find the best matchup against their enemies. Seen some complaints about platforming, but I felt it was a welcome break in between the nonstop hordes of enemies and made for a great added challenge. The world feels vast and expansive, the voice acting is phenomenal, and the soundtrack... Holy Hell I really can not give the game enough praise. Totally brutal fun and I fully expect it to win game of the year.
    *Edit*
I'd recommend to take some of these negative reviews with a grain of salt, particularly the 0 ratings. All story cutscenes are skippable, secrets aren't mandatory to progress, and if you use the game mechanics ammo is completely manageable. This game will not hold your hand, it will not guide you to the objective marker every step of the way. You will need to think and engage. It's raw, it's brutal, it's **** devastatingly hard. I'm playing on Ultraviolence, I get my ass beat, but DOOM Eternal is the first game in a decade that has put me right back into the giddy feeling I got when I played my very first fps ever. I don't ever rate anything a 10 and I've never left a review on metacritic before today, DOOM Eternal is just that good.

If you're familiar with DOOM 2016 and you know that you can't blink your eyes you will feel familiar with this. I see some people complaining about being too difficult. These people aren't gamers. All they want is a game where you can save after every bullet you shoot. There's no emotion on this. There's no point on playing a game just for the looks and with no sense of DANGER AND EXPECTATION. To this people, go back to your GOD MODE STATUS QUO games where you die in game and respawn pretty much on the same spot with no consequences. Expand

The thing I want to praise the most about Doom: Eternal is it's diverse environments and the enormous expansion to the lore of this universe. Every new planet, dimension and level looks beautiful, especially Taras Nabad and Urdak. The Slayer is an amazing character that was expanded a lot in Eternal with a complete backstory and awesome interactions, I loved collecting everything so that I could learn about this universe.

The weapons, enemies and bosses are great. The Marauder is awesome and it makes me want to see more of him in the future. I recommend Doom: Eternal a lot. If you like fast paced FPSs you should definitely give it a go.

Sometimes felt gameplay got repetitive. Felt that the platforming added some variety. I don’t know why people are so frustrated with it.

Everything here is to make you feel like a deity, heck, even the humans think you’re some form of god here to protect them. The game makes sure to make you feel powerful, like an unstoppable force that should not be reckoned with, the physical embodiment of Duke Nukem’s one-liners, a total badass. The game starts off really poorly, which is weird because soon after the bad start it becomes just as good as Doom 2016 and even surpasses that game in certain areas. Fun gunplay, absolutely incredible soundtrack by Mick Gordon and some gorgeous visuals. One of the better shooters of recent years. Don't let it's underwhelming first 30 minutes deceive you...

    Doom Eternal
    Great and greatly overrated
Doom Eternal features 2 modes, an online competitive mode where a demon slayer is heavily unfairly matched with infinitely spawning player controlled demons that just isn’t really fun unless you’re on the demon side, so imam just throw that mode away and focus on the reason everyone is buying doom eternal.. its hefty 17 hour long demon filled campaign, and this campaign is really great… here you play as a demon slayer, taking on zombies and demons on earth as well as mars, going through a fairly linear campaign, but one filled with traversal and platforming, which is a very welcomed change.. however I feel this new addition takes a back seat to the straight up demon slaying, which on paper sounds fine, but ultimately it leads to an incohesive feeling world that feels like a bunch of random video game elements stapled together.. and this is Doom Eternals biggest issue…. Nothing feels purposeful, it feels mindless and repetitive from start to finish, none of the levels are memorable, the combat is constant, never giving you a chance to breathe or explore, it’s a headache… playing through doom eternal is an enjoyable headache.. but still a headache…
combat that time around is much more enjoyable though. Enemies having their weaknesses, making almost every battle feel like a puzzle despite feeling mindless at the same time, rarely leading to frustrating encounters.. but don’t get me wrong.. those encounters do exist.. though rare.. theres one over powered enemy specifically that kills all and any fun youll be having with this game in an instant… more specifically in one area of the game where youre trapped with him and a snake enemy, and no ammo or health really around… which brings me to another gripe I have with doom eternal, its health and ammo situation… ammo health and armor really feel nonexistent in doom eternals world, instead the game relies on you using your abilities to obtain armour and health, you can catch enemies on fire and freeze them, you have chainsaw enemies for ammo… but I just feel like id much rather have ammo drops after killing enemies than forced to find a small one I can chainsaw..wait for that chainsaw to refuel and do it again… the chainsaw system in general is a nonsensical mess… you can store up to 3 chainsaw attacks, however there is no enemy you can kill with 2 fuels… so whats the point… theres 1 and theres 3… and then you have enemies later on that cant be attacked with the chainsaw at all because theyre too big… these enemies should be reserved for 3.. and the middle large enemies killed with 2.. it just leads to fuel hording, and the payoff is never worth it.. but that can be said for this games weapons as well, youre given amazing weapons towards the end of the game, but rarely any fuel to use them, which begs me to ask.. why even give them to me in the first place.. especially the sword… this item didn’t come into play and was basically unusable until the final boss… but if this was that weapons only purpose, I suppose that’s okay… but I feel if that is the case you should’ve just waited longer to give it to me… All in all I do feel Doom Eternal is a great game, its fun zombie slaying to heavy metal, theres a crazy amount of weapons, and different ways to upgrade these weapons, customize them to your gameplay… but just don’t believe the hype… go into doom eternal expecting a great game and not an amazing game or a masterpiece and you surely wont be disappointed…
But if you go in expecting game of the year, youre going to get smacked with level design and gameplay that feels plucked out of the old god of war games with guns stapled to it
    I give Doom Eternal
    an 8/10

The game is great, is it perfect? I don't think so.

Sadly, while some things are for the better - some are just pointless changes that just take away from otherwise great experience. The biggest positive for me was increased difficulty and what felt like better
The game is great, is it perfect? I don't think so.

I'll start by saying, DOOM Eternal is different from its predecessor in many ways and for sure it takes some time to adapt. Sadly, while some things are for the better - some are just pointless changes that just take away from otherwise great experience.

The biggest positive for me was increased difficulty and what felt like better AI - way more aggressive and way more punishing for dumb plays. I completed the game on Ultra Violence difficulty and it was really hectic and intense. The amount of enemies being thrown at you is literally insane and it's a real blast to kick some demon ass in such a fast paced fashion. And I love Marauder enemies - yeah, hate me now.

However, there are some problems and I'll try to explain why this is not a 10/10 game as universally praised

First of all - platforming. While I'm totally fine with that in small doses - some levels literally had more platforming and than fighting arenas and kicking demons ass. It really dragged and stalled the game for no good reason and it's not like platforming is that well done. In some sections it didn't feel very intuitive and for me it never felt cool stuff to do.

Next up we have bosses - I simply found them boring with repetitive mechanics. For two final bosses - which are basically major game's bosses - you repeat same pattern and what's worse, it's not that much about the boss as controlling adds spawns and keeping up your ammo stock. It just didn't feel so exciting or interesting to be honest.

The we have bloated progression and a lot of it is completely useless and seems like it was done to add illusion of complexity - while only gun mod and health, ammo caps is all that really matters. I mean more doesn't really mean better, when it's just for the sake of having more of something.

Finally - I have some criticism on the pace of first 3-4 mission. With the new system, encouraging use of variety of guns - it just works badly when you have just 2-3 guns available early on, no increased ammo cap (crucial to have better fight flow) - because it feels very disruptive and kinda slow. Thankfully the tempo picks up as you progress further, acquire more weapons and mods as well as you upgrade ammo cap.

Overall - it's a blast and absolutely worth buying even with a bit lackluster multi-player mode (but I didn't get the game for MP, so this wasn't even focus in the review). It's not perfect and some changes could have been handled better, but one cannot deny that this is hell of a shooter game. I don't know about you - but in my book 8/10 is a solid score meaning you can just go and grab the game right now at full price and get you worth back with hours of intense gameplay.
