Good- The battles, the environment, the music, the variety on digimons and their designs are stunning.

Bad- The Story is SO BAD, SO SO BAD, so damn simple and very boring quests. So many japanese clichés together that i could not enjoy this aspect of the game. Also, why they make you chose answers when they are totally useless? even sometimes the answers are just a full phrase divided

Unfortunately there are aspects of being a detective they left on the table since it all boils down to find clue, find other clue, and then be told who did it, which is a shame, but the presentation does sell it enough that you can get past it. The characters are dump, and the look as if they had jumped out of Pokemon gyms. CONCLUSION: As a Digimon fan, I find this game tedious and boring. A Pokemon game but with Digimons

Wonderful story and battle system. You can make a lot of different teams, and there is no useless digimon, however, instead next order, cyber sleuth lacks about the importance of your decisions impacts at your partners evolution. Furthermore, you don't feel like your partners are important, even your starter, because there aren't enough interactions with your digimons.

But now that I've finished this work of greatness, I wanna go back and smack the me who nearly gave up for almost missing a nearly perfect JRPG. This game had everything you could possibly ask for in it's genre. Amazing characters, a great story, a leveling system and training system that's actually fun and efficient, engrossing side quests, and a perfected battle system that's so good you find yourself not even using it's full intricacies. This is also the first time I've ever been excited to play a New Game+, since I not only want to play as the girl avatar to see the differences, but it carries over EVERY bit of content minus key items! I could go on for paragraphs about what an amazing game Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth was, but it's enough to say it was one of the greatest JRPGs I've ever played, and it easily revived the Digimon fan in me that I had thought was dead. Pokemon and Digimon were the big deal back in the day, however, after a while, I went with team Digimon and practically stayed with them until now...and let's just say it wasn't the best experience when it comes to games. Sure pokemon games are good but they're so identical from one another that puts call of duty to shame.

Anyway, after hearing of this game I decided to give it a go, knowing it's a turned base rpg - which automatically makes it better than 90% of the rest - and with the roster of well-known Digimon which really helps. I mean it: seeing Palmon as my starter Digimon gave me the shivers and nostalgia from back when I watched the Digimon cartoon, probably one of my favorite series of my childhood - and back then pokemon was still pretty good too. The more I played the more I just loved to finally get my team of Digimon, like Greymon or Angemon (I screamed like a fangirl at her sight) or Leomon (R.I.P.) and more.
Not just that: each Digimon has an iconic skill that has its own animation and it's just like the anime: angemon's knuckle, Lillymon's cannon, Greymon's meteor! It makes me wish this game was available back when it was new, it would've blown pokemon away by a longshot!

I could go on for hours and tell you why this is amazing but let's be real here: unless you never liked Digimon this might be half a turn-off because none of these details might get you. When I got Lillymon I was literally the happiest man in a while and alongside Garudamon and Metalgreymon, it was the best feeling ever to have your own dream team
But if you never liked it, or just never got really into Digimon, this might be only half the fun and a tough cookie in general. Just beware.

Anyway, let's switch to combat, which is very good as you can use 3 Digimon in battle and carry 8 with you - depending on your character's memory. The combat, as I said, it's your generic turn-based RPG that works and it's pretty simplistic too, having 3 types of Digimon (Virus, Vaccine, Data) alongside 8 weaknesses (Water, Fire, Plant - Electricity, Earth, Wind - Light and Dark), which can be mixed and allow you to do up to triple damage. Some Digimon can also have no weaknesses or very little of it, such as Flamedramon who's a Fire Armor type (only weak to water).
In addition, each Digimon can learn up to 20 moves but only use 6 in combat and as far as I know, these skills are carried over while digivolving, making the formation of the perfect Digimon group a challenge of its own.

Overall, the combat is good and has tons of iconic Digimon, and it's very vast and expanded. Too bad it's ungodly unbalanced.
Normal is far too easy and you can almost do every battle on auto mode (minus the bosses, some of which are really tough) and hard is, well, hard enough that'll make even normal battles tough and make sure you save anytime.
I appreciate the fact that it has a difficulty slider but I also wished that the game would be overall balanced without resulting in "ultra-easy mode" and "Insane mode".

And last but not least, the story, and I won't go any deeper as it could be a spoiler but let me just say it's very, VERY hard to follow. The game has a hub world system so it's reasonable to say that there are not huge places to explore: only dungeons and city locations. The problem is not that though: the main problem is that the story keeps jumping focus all the time and it makes the story really hard to follow.
For example in a chapter (I think 4?) you get tasked to prove that ghost exists: great, you think it's a digital ghost right? Nope! Ghosts are real, you proved their existence! Case closed...what?! That's it? Yes, that's it.

This feels like a subquest mini-plot but it's actually in the main quest! These mini-plots constantly stop the flow and makes it all harder to enjoy the really good plot of the game: it has dark turns - extremely dark ones too - and its tone is taken seriously all the time, but without losing its opportunity to remind you that "it's a game about digital monsters and some of them are weirdly shaped".

It's really great when it goes on the plot and tries to tackle on the real deal.
it's really unfun when the game decides to stop and make me do useless chores.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this game if you're a Digimon fan but if you aren't I would recommend it as a decent jrpg with "monster catching" elements and an overall good story that while hard it is quite good on its own. Really hard to say no so give it a shot: you might enjoy Digimon more than you think!

PS: the game lacks English dubbing so for those who aren't into reading while watching, get ready to direct your eyes on the bottom of the screen 24/7!

You can't digivolve into the strongest monsters without enoug API, and "API" requires you to level up your Digimon (preferably lvl 99 for the most points), then keep de-volving and digivolving your Digimon several times. Unfair padding at its' worst.

Besides that, it's a pretty good game. Great visuals for a PS Vita game, a story that's engaging and a lot of side content for those who have the patience for that. It's great to see a more mature take on the Digimon franchise. However, when you spend more time on grinding than the story itself, it'll anger you. I never bothered to play the side quests after I had beaten the game because of this. I was just happy it was over and never touched the game again.

At first the game seemed like your average JRPG with Digimon thrown into the mix. Then I started realizing several of the voice over tracks were missing randomly, a good portion of the English translation was not quality checked, several stat requirements to get the best Digimon had me spending several hours digivolving/de-digivolving Digimon to get enough stats, and found a game breaking glitch with the PS4 slim's hardware in either Chapter 12 or 20 (depending on who you ask, it happened right before the end credits for me).

The game looked like it was going to be fun, was for a bit but then had several short comings that was probably a result of a rushed release, big budget cuts, or lack of QA. Hopefully the next game will be better but until then I'll be selling my copy off and wait for a better Digimon game to come out.

This is primarily a game for digimon/pokemon/monster-growers/collectors, or people who don't expect much from their JRPGs. I'm none of these, but let me start with the good:

There's loads of digimon in the game. As you fight them, you obtain them. There's then various ways to level them up and move them up and down the evolution tree until you get them with the skills and stats you want. This appears to be the main draw of the game and is what people mean when they say the game is addictive.

And now the bad. This is from the perspective of JRPG veteran who only plays/likes games with adult themes and solid stories.

The story appears to be aimed at 8-14 year olds. It's basically a "detective vs. an evil corporation" story that gets supernatural about half way through. If you're just here to collect digimon, the story is a must, since you must get through it to get the strongest ones. It took me 38 hours to complete and is about as linear as you'd expect from a JRPG.

The story wasn't at all interesting or engaging for me, though it did go from "absolutely unbearable" to "tolerable" after about half-way through. Don't expect much here unless you find Power Rangers stories to be engaging.

The dialog and other text in the game is horrendous. Everyone says about 400% more than they need to to get their point across. This makes most of the character conversations outright boring. There's several typos/translation issues. Some text is completely out of place (like it was copied into the wrong spot). And because the story is so silly, some characters try to explain away the silliness by constantly giving paragraphs of explanation of why certain silly thing are supposed to make sense. It's like listening to a little girl explain for 30 minutes why she's a princess from a magical dimension who can see fairies and perform magic only when people aren't looking.

The combat is incredibly basic. Think original Dragon Warrior/Quest, but with attributes on all monsters and attacks. I used to think the Atelier games had basic turn-based combat, but those games have much more interesting and engaging combat than this one.

The side missions are very basic. There's simple ones where you find a lost item and standard ones where you visit places and fight a monster. The simple find item ones are horrible unless you like searching through large dungeons full of random encounters for a relatively worthless item. The standard ones are a bit better and at least include some story information. Though the quality of these are the same as the main story.

Extras: There's nothing. I beat the game and got nothing but a new game plus mode and some extra side-missions that I can do if I want to evolve to the best digimon. No developer commentary, no character model viewer, no music mode (not that the music is impressive). I was hoping for more considering that just about every other JRPG I've played in the last 4 years on PS3/PS4 has these.

It's a competent game, it's just not for me. I think my daughter might have a fun time playing it when she turns 8 (if she doesn't get bored by the walls of meaningless dialog).

With a deep, lengthy story this game depicts a world of a much more mature and dark tone than it's kid friendly counterpart. With evolution being tied more to challenges and performing certain feats, there's a certain feeling of achievement in evolving your digimon that's not present in Pokemon's more vague evolution mechanics that usually require strategy guides to figure out.
Combat is satisfying and intuitive with a healthy dose of challenge thrown in. However, the story tends to meander about a bit towards the middle sections. Some parts leave you high and dry not sure of where you're supposed to go for a certain quest and can leave you stranded for hours. And if the excuse is that you're supposed to 'sleuth' your way through those sections then I can't agree. Any segment that makes you choose between wandering aimlessly for an hour looking for an unknown location in the world or just looking it up on GameFAQs is one that's poorly designed and unfun. And when a lot of those areas tend to have the same, blue data cyber look to them, with no variety, it can be fairly monotonous to re-explore all these old areas over and over again.
All in all though, if you don't mind keeping a walk-through pulled up for when you get stuck and can enjoy the game for what it gets right and forgive what it gets wrong, you could do much worse than to check out this title. There's a lot of variety in the digimon you'll find yourself facing, and to see what new mon you'll find next can be an exciting and fun experience. If a future title can use the strengths found in this game and couple it with a more refined experience, we may well see a truly remarkable game.

I understand these games flaws, such as the closed world, but we've been far too spoiled by games such as skyrim in my opinion, the combat is far too easy on the easy difficulty aside from the royal knights battles, but this is easily fixed by turning your game to hard mode. The fact that digimon have been added since release is a nice touch.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth took me by surprise the same way the Digimon TV show did a little while back. The evolution/de-evolution mechanic, the Japanese voice track and the surprisingly mature and deep storyline were my favorite aspects, but the game really has almost no weakness or faults.

Cyber Sleuth doesn't reinvent the JRPG that comprises its core, but for a Digimon title, this is a solid step in the right direction.
