Speaking of the combat...If you've played the Shin Megami Tensei series (such as Nocturne PS2 or SMT:IV 3DS), then hopefully you will enjoy the combat in this game because it is similar, but unique enough because it's Digimon of course. The exploitation of weaknesses, creature fusion, hidden effect moves and special attacks are all here from the SMT series.

There's a hub world, and the graphics are fine but my main gripe is that the difference between this and the Vita version is roughly only ~1.1 GB, so honestly how much improvement could there be? Oh well, at least we get to play on the big screen. The traveling areas are nice looking but nothing like a big budget game like Bloodborne or GTA V.

This is my first review for Metacritic, mostly because I've been lazy to create an account but so many great RPGs for the PS4 are coming soon, so why not give some input! Will edit back this review later if possible for more useful info.

Everything snyone could as for from a Digimon game and a JRPG in general. Under the eye candy of the game's flashy attack animations there is a deep and yet easy to grasp battle system that can be likened to the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. If you love digimon or are even just ab RPG fab, Cyber Sleuth is a MUST HAVE.

Please go throw sixty two dollars and some change at whatever local retailer or online company of your choice that is selling a copy of this game. You have been informed.

Bandai Namco has sold this game as an experience for an older generation of Digimon fans. That being said, I haven't watched or thought about Digimon since I was about 11, maybe 12. I ended up playing the new app, Digimon Heroes, and the itch to play a full length, fully realized console Digimon game grew with each passing day. I am a big fan of RPG's, having been a fan of Pokemon since I was 4, the Tales series since I was 12, and Fire Emblem since I was also 12.

Digimon Cyber Sleuth follows the consistent (some may call it tired) formula of a JRPG. Yes, there is grinding. Plenty of it, in fact. Even though this is directly from Japan, people will still complain about how it's like "All the other JRPG's". While the grinding, cringe-worthy dialogue and japanese subtitles exist, far more content is offered in order to differentiate from the rest of the pack- allow me to elaborate.

    * I will not spoil the story. The story is pretty darn good. **

    Location

The locale of DSCS is one of the most unique environments I have ever set foot within a video game. I am speaking of the real world, Japan. The most famous parts of Japan have been recreated piece by piece- save for copyright infringements- in order to provide the player an immersive and bustling hub world. Unfortunately, the NPC's are robotic and only useful for quests- or cases as they're called. The environment around you is also very set in stone. There is hardly any interacting with the objects around you. To me that is slightly disappointing. It would've been cool to find a Digimon hiding or a special item and would've played into that Sleuth role of your main character quite well.

    Battle System

You have your classic Turn based strategy. Digimon are not dubbed or subbed, only main characters are subbed. This really disconnects you from the Digimon in use. I am used to Guilmon's childlike demeanor and his trademark bubble-in-throat inflections. These are woefully absent in the game. Getting back on track, the Battle system is both addicting at simple. The double triangle that exists within Digimon is hard to get used to but once you master that, the game becomes even easier. You will get very familiar with the battle system. As I mentioned before, grinding is a must. There are features you can use as the main character to increase and decrease the encounter rate for Digimon, making training a breeze.

    Digilab

A hub for your Digimon collection. Here, you can hatch, train, delete, move Digivolve/De-Digivolve, and teach Digimon. The feature "Digifarm" gives you the option to place your Digimon in a virtual society, performing various tasks to find real life criminals, items, and experience points. Always seems a bit too easy to get EXP, though. Still, the one gripe I have regarding Digilab is the fact it's not readily available from all points in the game. It should be accessible from any given moment: think smartphone app. That would have been an intuitive and welcome addition to the game. An online colosseum is also an interesting feature, but one I have not yet used.

    the Digimon

This is where it's at. I cannot tell you how great it is to have Renamon fighting at my command. The models look fantastic from a distance, and just like everything else in the game, become slightly less appealing the closer you get. As I mentioned before, Digimon are not subbed or dubbed, so you have no idea what they are saying in battle. However, pulling off a Diamond Storm with Renamon is extremely satisfying. There are 244 Digimon if you preordered the game. Each was carefully rendered to provide you the fan service of bringing you back to the moment you began to appreciate the world of Digimon.

I do not count Grinding against the game. However, I do find the lack of English dialogue a bit disappointing. This was the Western addition of the game, and there are no english voice actors. Maybe that is for the best, but as a fan of the Western television show, not hearing my favorite Monsters talk and exclaim moves in the voices I know is a let down. The world of Digimon Cyber Sleuth is vast yet lacking any real depth- think Tales of. The heavy-handed Japanese influence of the world may be a turnoff to some, but to me, it provides a unique look into a culture I know little about through the lens of Digimon. If it wasn't for the great preorder incentives, I would've waited to pick this game up. It's a great game, but sixty dollars is a steep asking price for a game w/o the option to choose between Japanese and English.

Characters in this game have called me "Asswipe". Parents be warned this game will call your kid an asswipe.

30 or so hours in i am not slightly bored, the characters and story are interesting, Combat is a classic turn based RPG combat system which is both easy to understand but complex enough to be fun.

If you like Digimon you will love this game
If you don't like digimon then its probably hit or miss, but im leaning towards hit.

This is the best digimon game to come out in a VERY long time. Like PS2 long time. Maybe ever. Combat is fun, raising and leveling digimon is in-depth, GRIND-ABLE (which I love) and the story and dialogue is actually pretty quirky/funny.

    Great RPG, and if you're a digimon person (digi-person?!) it's a MUST.

-Welcome Home! You can roam the digiverce as well as the human world in some of the best graphics a game like this has seen. The world though not fully interact able are very well done and provide a fun and varied set of environments to roam.
-Depth! Holy cow the depth of leveling, digivolving, trial and error finding that perfect team, your farm to help raise digimon you don't want with you, the 242 total digimon, working fun cases that take you through both worlds, the way skills work and leveling is affected by both digivolving and de-digivolving (yes you can go down evolutions to try for higher levels and alternet evolutions), and with a hard mode it really all ties together in a deep immersion that makes you fall in love with the anime all over again.
    CONS:
    -No dubbed dialog.
-No local pvp only ranked matches
    -THATS ALL!

So let me be honest, if you see people ripping this apart its because they do not know a good Rpg if it sat on there lap, or they don't like localized JRPGs and are just playing a game that's not for them. If you like Pokemon, monster rancher, or Digimon at all this game is a welcome change to the constant shooters and action based combat games coming out. Good luck and I hope you give it a try because you won't regret it.

The Digimon franchise seems to be making a comeback in the United States by way of those consumers who were fans back in the first few years of its presence there - the fact that this game was published in North America largely by fan request is solid evidence of this. And there's a lot for those fans to love here - nearly all of the Digimon characters present in this game are taken from the first three shows in the series (with plenty to choose from at nearly 250 unique creatures), and the core gameplay is quite solid to the point where it's a joy in and of itself just collecting all of the old favorites.

While Bandai certainly deserves credit for responding directly to their users in such a major way, unfortunately it feels like they've only done the bare minimum to service the original product. The translation work in this game is, to put it bluntly, abysmal, to the point where it gets in the way. Not sourcing English-language voices is understandable for a relatively niche product, but the phrasing used in the dialogue is consistently awkward, there are outright grammatical errors in places, and certain conversation choices are bugged due to text overflowing its designated space. Some of this even encroaches on the tutorials and descriptive text, which can lead to the player being misled. It consistently feels like allowing the translation team another few weeks for quality assurance would have done wonders for the apparent quality of the game.

Not that the rest of the experience is without its issues, mind you. On Playstation 4, it's fairly obvious that this game is a scaled-up release of the handheld version from the texture and model quality of some of the environments and human characters. Luckily enough, it seems like plenty of work went into tuning the Digimon themselves, and they all look great as a result. The art design overall is quite excellent, especially the detailed environments of the real world and colorful look of EDEN - again, quite similar to elements of the early seasons of the anime in appearance - but the human characters' designs certainly won't suit everybody's taste.

The Digimon management system is excellent; rather than being chance-based, you earn new Digimon simply by encountering them repeatedly, with rewards being greater the more you encounter that monster before claiming it - and the process doesn't feel like a grind at all at least for creatures in the first half of the game, especially since it's in-line with what is required to progress in the first place. In fact, on the Normal difficulty, Cyber Sleuth manages to avoid the trap of making the player level-grind to progress, especially since Digimon level up remarkably quickly in the first place. Unfortunately, the Hard difficulty does fall into a standard RPG trap - the opponent creatures are simply given a bump in numerical strength and unlimited "skill points" rather than making the AI more intelligent, which *does* encourage grinding simply to avoid situations where your opponents move four times for every one move you get.

The story is fairly standard JRPG fare - not fantastic, but engaging enough to keep the player pushing forward, with characters ranging from endearing to irritating from scene to scene. As the title would suggest, you're provided a good stable of side-missions, which is where I would argue that this game works best; each "case" acts as its own self-contained story arc, ranging from the expected investigations of Digimon-assisted cyber-crimes to fun romps like discovering a rampant ice Digimon causing an air conditioner malfunction.

Cyber Sleuth does a lot right - it's pretty easily-accessible to newcomers while throwing old fans a bone, and the meat of the game is enticing enough to keep players hooked - but several glaring issues in its presentation will make it a hard sell for anybody not already interested.

Having played many JRPGs before, the mechanics are very similar to what I am used to, but are also a lot deeper than I thought they would be. For example, not only does it borrow type weaknesses from previous games, but also element weaknesses, and even a second element wheel. Of course like many other games of this genre, there are status effects, such as poison and paralysis, but also ones specific to these games that gives it its own strategy and uniqueness. The real meat of the mechanics however, is the case system, which is like side quests but given a spin on it to make it not as boring, and the Digimon themselves.

The Digimon, all are unique and fun, as well as having different skills for different strategies and situations. An example of this would be how the Greymon line of Digimon are more geared towards slow and offensive monsters, while the Garurumon line is more focused on speed. There are support Digimon as well, and each Digimon has inherited skills that can be transferred whenever they digivolve.
You will be spending a lot of time leveling these monsters up and changing them, whether it be in stats or forms. There can be a very big grind, but finding the different Digimon and going to all their different Digivolutions makes it enjoyable.

Lastly, the story can be a little long for this game, and people will be put off by the Japanese voice acting, instead of English ones, but it does not detract from the experience. This game is a Japanese game, with the anime-like story and characters, so the Japanese voices are fitting, and commonplace when games like these are ported from Japan. Overall the story is interesting, and the characters are very memorable, as is the great music that accompanies it. If you liked the Danganronpa games or some of the Shin Megami Tensei games, you will like the music, and probably the story as well.

As a fan of Digimon and JRPGs, this game is wonderful and has kept me very busy for 50+ hours, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys these types of games. This game deserves an 8.5- 9.0, is it is a lot deeper than you expect, and worth it, especially on Vita as it is $20 cheaper, even if the PS4 version is better in every way. Let us hope that we get more of these games, and that actual "critics" review this game, as it deserves at least to be looked at and not forgotten.

Digimon was the story of a group of kids, given cool little beepers called Digivices, who were sent into the Digital World to defend the life and times of smart, human language-speaking creatures called Digimon. Fast forward more than 10 years later, and Digimon is all grown up in a role-playing detective game for the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth’s premise is simple, but its content and replay-ability runs deep. You’re a normal, Web-surfing guy or gal who gets involved with a group of hackers and somehow ends up in a digital coma. What is a digital coma? Well, your body is in a coma but you can still manifest in the real world as a program, I think.

Anyway, while the overarching plot has you finding out how to get back to your body, it’s your job to solve cyber crimes. You work with a detective agency, led by someone with an odd haircut, and put the magnifying glass on everything from a buggy smartphone app to a broken air conditioning unit.
But come on, everyone knows the real fun is with the Digimon.

And Cyber Sleuth delivers there, channeling bits and pieces of earlier Digimon games like Digimon World: Dawn and Dusk and combining it with housekeeping elements from the Pokemon games. And yes, I have been avoiding the parallels to Pokemon on purpose, because aside from monster collecting, these are wholly different titles.

You scan, load, train and digivolve these monsters so that they can get stronger in battle. Battles are turn-based and involved pre-selecting skills and items in an attempt to strategize the best move. Think chess, but if each piece could blow fire and rain sharp minerals down from the sky.

And things like the DigiFarm give off some heavy Pokemon vibes, but there’s enough there to make a difference, and a lot of it executes a hell of a lot better than your average ’mon game. The farm allows you to play and feed your Digimon, and they’ll level up while you’re out sleuthing. You’ll even get text messages in-game detailing your monster’s progress.

For those worried about content, fret not. While the game may get a bit boring after a play-through, there’s plenty more to do afterward. Once you complete the game’s 20-quest main story, there are endgame quests, collectibles, replayable dungeons and more. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s enough to keep the average completionist interested.

It’s odd, really, that after all this time a Digimon game could come out and actually be pretty darn good. While the game originally released in Japan in March 2015, it took more than 60,000 signatures on a Change.org petition to make its way west. Hey, maybe we’ll get that Nintendo 3DS Digimon game here pretty soon. One can only hope.

Overall, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is a pleasant blast from the past. Its story isn’t groundbreaking but the combat and performance are nearly flawless. With elements from popular Japanese role-playing games like Persona and Pokemon, one can only imagine this game will find its niche here in the States.

That is not a bad number at all but when i saw the game did not have my beloved JewelBeemon (because Stingmon is the coolest digimon in the entire digital world) it did sort of break my heart when I went to digivolve him and instead got another tiered digimon that I could have gotten with another digimon- instead of wasting my Stingmon :/.

Though, if the site allowed me to give the game a decimal score- I'd have given it a 9.5/10 . . . but since it only allows whole numbers- a 10 is a right amount.

There's loads of digimon in the game. As you fight them, you obtain them. There's then various ways to level them up and move them up and down the evolution tree until you get them with the skills and stats you want. This appears to be the main draw of the game and is what people mean when they say the game is addictive.

And now the bad. This is from the perspective of JRPG veteran who only plays/likes games with adult themes and solid stories.

The story appears to be aimed at 8-14 year olds. It's basically a "detective vs. an evil corporation" story that gets supernatural about half way through. If you're just here to collect digimon, the story is a must, since you must get through it to get the strongest ones. It took me 38 hours to complete and is about as linear as you'd expect from a JRPG.

The story wasn't at all interesting or engaging for me, though it did go from "absolutely unbearable" to "tolerable" after about half-way through. Don't expect much here unless you find Power Rangers stories to be engaging.

The dialog and other text in the game is horrendous. Everyone says about 400% more than they need to to get their point across. This makes most of the character conversations outright boring. There's several typos/translation issues. Some text is completely out of place (like it was copied into the wrong spot). And because the story is so silly, some characters try to explain away the silliness by constantly giving paragraphs of explanation of why certain silly thing are supposed to make sense. It's like listening to a little girl explain for 30 minutes why she's a princess from a magical dimension who can see fairies and perform magic only when people aren't looking.

The combat is incredibly basic. Think original Dragon Warrior/Quest, but with attributes on all monsters and attacks. I used to think the Atelier games had basic turn-based combat, but those games have much more interesting and engaging combat than this one.

The side missions are very basic. There's simple ones where you find a lost item and standard ones where you visit places and fight a monster. The simple find item ones are horrible unless you like searching through large dungeons full of random encounters for a relatively worthless item. The standard ones are a bit better and at least include some story information. Though the quality of these are the same as the main story.

Extras: There's nothing. I beat the game and got nothing but a new game plus mode and some extra side-missions that I can do if I want to evolve to the best digimon. No developer commentary, no character model viewer, no music mode (not that the music is impressive). I was hoping for more considering that just about every other JRPG I've played in the last 4 years on PS3/PS4 has these.

It's a competent game, it's just not for me. I think my daughter might have a fun time playing it when she turns 8 (if she doesn't get bored by the walls of meaningless dialog).

The game takes around 70 hours to beat, has hard difficulty settings, new game +, tons of Digimon to train and create a team with, and even online battles to see who has the best combination and strategy. I hope this game gets the publicity and praise it deserves!

It is a step away from the DGMN: World series and is it's own title. In the little time I was able to play with it in my busy schedule, I am extremely happy with it. The nostalgia for the 1990-2000 fans is astounding to play with friends we haven't seen in many years on television. The turn base system is easy for newcomers to video games and to the series itself. The fact that this was a handheld title that was ported to a system, there are obvious thoughts of "Is this really a PS4 game?" - yes, it is and it should be. The story is great. The gameplay is amazing. I have very few gripes about the game being the lazy translation and the wide range of abbreviation/stats one has to keep note of. Otherwise, it is an amazing game and I am extremely happy to see Digimon again. It is fresh change from the same ol': Pokemon, CoD, Halo, etc. 10/10 would recommend to anyone. A+. Bandai's twitter is the best way to contact them with any sort of information!

I've been waiting for this game for a long time. As a huge Digimon fan in all aspects (Anime, Card Game, Movies and Video Games), I've been waiting for the day that Bandai Namco brings Digimon to the US after such a long hiatus.

PROS: Graphics are amazing. The humans in the game were created by Suzuhito Yasuda, who worked on the characters in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor and Durarara!!. Cut scenes are unique, the Digimon are spot on from their card and anime counter-parts. Battles are fluid and exciting with a classic, turn-based RPG feel.
Storyline is amazing, solving several cases that link to your current state, with others as fun side-missions.

CONS: No Online Battles except for Ranking Battles. This pretty much means you can't battle your friends on the PS4 version, which sucks, since one of the main reasons I bought thus was that I was told that you can battle with other Tamers, with no such luck. The Ranking Battles even seem to have pre-downloaded A.I. teams. Very disapointing.
TAKE-IT OR LEAVE-IT: Japanese audio with English subtitles only. No English audio. Not a problem, but some fine tuning on the subtitles and English audio would have been a nice option.

SUGGESTIONS: Bandai Namco or whoever needs to make a patch or program to give PS4 Players for this game the ability to play/battle friends. This is almost a must. VITA Players at least have Ad-Hoc for local play with other players. This game would be a solid 10/10 if we had Friend Battles.

(THANKS CANADA, and people wonder why I rarely buy new releases, let alone own a console) So now borrowing my friends PS4 I'm able to play one of the few digimon games that seemed like it could be really good. Surprisingly enough, it is.

The translations are generally well written, there's a few really goofy lines of dialogue that look like the localization team took quite some liberties with, but as someone who knows absolutely zero Japanese, the writing is easy to understand and the english versions of digimon attacks/lore is very faithful which surprised me because usually the attack names/lore is really inconsistent between different digimon games due to translation.

From my perspective I think my enjoyment of this game hinges entirely on two things:
    1. I have an OCD like desire to unlock every single digimon's page in the field guide
    2. I have an obsession with designing a team of my most favorite digimon

The story is fairly interesting, and I definitely want to see where it goes, but as it stands now I find myself thinking "just a few more battles until I can digivolve this guy", "just a few more cases until I have enough party memory to digivolve him to ultimate", "just a few more digimon for the field guide before I sleep". It's been easy for me to kill time with this game and have a lot of fun doing it. But it's because of my love for digimon.

If you like digimon in general I would call this game a must have. It could have been better, there's no english voice overs, but that is typical for a digimon game. The digimon models are top notch and as far as games in general go, I would say it's a pretty fun and challenging (I'm playing on the hard setting), you can't just breeze through the game using any type of digimon you happen to have, you generally need a decent balanced team to survive boss encounters and smart use of guarding and items to protect your disadvantaged digimon.

Definitely would have given this a 9/10 if there was effort made to have english voice overs as well, but what can ya do, I doubt digimon will ever be popular enough in NA to justify spending that kind of money.

I haven't played many Digimon games and the reason I picked this up was from thinking about my fond memories of playing Digimon World 3 on the PS1 when I was younger, and watching Digimon Tri recently.
I bought a physical PS4 copy of the game this morning (along with Gravity Rush Remastered) and played throughout the day.

I'm a fan of the Pokémon games, Shin Megami Tensei series etc. The Pokémon elements are a given but there's something about the atmosphere and the music (which is great) sometimes that gives it this slight Persona feel to me, and if you've explored a hub world in one of those games before (like Inaba in P4G), it's quite the same deal in Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth.

Graphics-wise I don't think the games objective in the first place is to wow you, in fact I wont cheat and look it up but, from my knowledge I'm pretty sure PS4 wasn't even an option in Japan. It's essentially a Vita game and I truly shun the mention of them. I personally think they look great. It's certainly NOT a reason to not buy the game.

The game-play is solid. Maxing a Digmons level in battle and hopping back to the Digilab to Digivolve is just.. DigiSatisfying to DigiWitness. The story is very interesting so far. I'm in love with the idea implemented that Digimon are hacking tools used by humans, and humans are in turn also susceptible to be used by Digimon in the same fashion. I can't wait to see how it unfolds, and neither should you if you just go out and buy it already you goddamn SCRUB, 1v1 me online.

To begin with, the gameplay is great, and it feels very much like Persona. Each digimon has it's own attribute and strengths and weaknesses, much like Pokemon, and the digimon can be trained and be used to level up other digimon by "fusing" them together. There is an online mode where you can battle other players, but it is not balanced at all. I was matched up with someone who's digimon are 8x stronger than mine, so I hope they implement a patch that allows for fair matchmaking. There is lots to do in the game, and you never find yourself bored.

Next, the graphics/sound. I found the graphics to be satisfying, but you can tell that they didn't fully utilize the PS4's capabilites. Audio wise, there are only Japanese voices(which I am guessing was due to cutting costs) but I am fine with that personally. Some of the translations are bad though.

I am still playing the game, so I can't speak too much on the story, but what I can say is that it is a decent story. It is nothing amazing, but for a digimon game, it's good.

To fully break down the game:

The combat is a sound turn based system, similar to Digimon World 2 and the Digimon DS games. It has a simple system for everyone to understand and to enjoy. Special moves, regular attacks, combos, guard... etc.

Some complain that the graphics from the PS4 version and the PS Vita version have minimal differences, but to me that personally isn't much of an issue. It is still the best looking Digimon game and having the game on PS4 in the United States is a blessing, since Japan only had it release for the Vita. The game performs extremely well on PS4 and doesn't suffer from long load times like traditional RPGs. It's only 2.57 GB! which is tremendously low for usual PS4 titles.

If you are a fan of Digimon then go out and get this game ASAP! It will make you fall in love with the series again because of its unique characters and the funny interactions you will have. If you are not a Digimon fan, don't worry! The game's story is separate from the anime and is a overall great JRPG experience. It only has Japanese audio with English Subs, since it was only intended to be a release in Japan. The Japanese voice acting is still really sick like most anime, but it is worth mentioning for people who expected it to be in English as well.

The evolution, Digimon discovery, and training systems are addictive and rewarding, the soundtrack is catchy and entertaining (I may or may not be listening to it right now), and the story is competent with enough genuinely interesting concepts from both main story missions and side quests to leave me generally satisfied, and with a few moments that I'm sure will stick with me.

The translation is rather rough, with fairly frequent errors. Level design is a bit of a downside here too, as the dungeons are pretty much universally simplistic, and not particularly engaging to navigate. Especially in the early to mid game, they can get rather repetitive.

There is a lot of content to be found in this game, and much of it is optional, giving you the choice of how far into the game you want to delve. A significant amount of side quest content has been added since the game released, and all of it (at the time of this writing) is free, which is always a nice touch.

I'm quite happy to say that, despite my high hopes, and despite my worries of what might go wrong, Cyber Sleuth delivered even more than I had imagined it could. I absolutely recommend the game to anyone fond of turn-based JRPGs, and I am personally VERY excited to see any and all future Digimon games if this is to be the new standard. If in future installments, the flaws of this game can be overcome, and the strengths further enhanced, Digimon games could become real A+ products.

Alright so when I saw the plethora of extremely positive reviews here I had to come and at least provide a non-biased viewpoint for an average gamer. I think that some long time fans are too generous with 9's and 10's.

My credentials for feeling that I am qualified to write a review are:
-I've played the game for 15 hours since I picked it up yesterday.
-I pre-ordered a physical copy because I have been a long time digimon fan.
-I am almost exclusively an rpg player.
-I am not a huge fan of things that are Japanese just because of how painfully stereotypically Japanese they aspire to be

    First Impressions:
First thing I saw was when they handed me the case in store. It was clean and somewhat bland. Pretty simple, with writing in French English and Spanish. Seems like a good sign that all things Japanese have been completely obliterated from the case.
As soon as I'm in the car I crack open the (premium priced) case (same price as Destiny and Bloodborne and a number of other very high production value games) I am somewhat surprised to see the case has nothing in it but a cd. For a game that aspires to appeal to more mature rp gamers it seems funny that they would overlook including a book or even a pamphlet that gives us that little nostalgic shiver.
I get home at about 10 am and pop the game in, and start it up.
No English audio. I have dome some searching and found it stated in a couple of places online but nowhere on the case and nowhere on any of the sites selling the game have i seen it stated that the game wont have English audio. very disappointing. I shouldn't have to research a game beyond looking at its case to see something as big as that. So now I am starting to realize that Banadai's idea of localizing and remastering a game for PS4 is merely adding English subs and charging double what the game sold for when it was on PS Vita. Just great. Had I known this was what I was getting I would have bought the 3GB download on my Playstation TV for $40 instead of $80 CAD.
Within the first half hour muted the in game voices because, while the male voices are fine, the female Japanese voices are so absurdly high pitched that they threaten to pierce my eardrums and crack windows. The game is also quite sexist. I know they said they want to appeal to a more mature audience but in my mind that means slightly more complicated game play than their earlier titles, not girls with half their breasts hanging out being leered at by digital perverts. Girls also seem to be portrayed as fairly dumb and helpless. Good old fashioned Japanese sexist humor at its best. This is not the uplifting empowering show and games I grew up loving. That's for sure. Anyhow after 2 hours PSN finally came back up from their regular tuesday update and I wen't on to redeem my in game DLC for preordering only to see that the digital copy of the game is selling for $20 CAD less and includes the "preorder only" DLC. Really??? so just to recap we have digital vita game at $40 digital PS4 game at $60 and physical PS4 game at $80. And btw there was no option to preorder the game digitally on the PS4 so the digital pricing was a complete surprise. What does this mean? this means that Bandai thought "why dont we take our most valuable audience, our most dedicated fans, and just take an extra $20 bucks from them." Bravo Bandai. Anyhow despite all this disappointment its still an okay game. But if you have the option. Just get it for Vita. Its certainly not a PS4 quality game. even better, if you wait a couple months you will probably game the opportunity to cross buy them both for $40 on sale. They have not improved the multiplayer in the game, its still just Pokemon style battles. Despite the game being in 3D you cannot rotate the camera it just always follows you at an awkwardly close angle. You can back the camera off to a comfortable distance but every time you change scenes you have to re-set it again. So to explain my 5/10 score, which I think is very fair, I would give this game 5/10 as an $80 game. Because that's what it gives. It provides half of what I would expect for a premium price. I'm off to return my physical copy to the store now after which I will buy the digital vita version of the game at which point ill be close to having a 8/10 quality game. It is not perfect and It is not very groundbreaking. It is fan service for extreme anime fans. But I don't feel fulfilled as a Digimon fan. Hope this has been some help. Take care.

At 10 hours in my 3 starting digimon are champion-class and the story enemies are in-training. The "dungeons" presented are 3 featureless corridors. After the starting premise the scenario made an awkward genre change to the titular "sleuthing" and instantly devolved into an episodic grind.

Example of a typical "case": Find the "mean guy" (marked with an "!") in the usual empty corridor-dungeon, fighting completely under-leveled enemies through random encounters. Defeat him in one shot. He assures you he is good now. Use (expensive) item to warp back to start of dungeon. Warp to base. Receive meager reward that doesn't cover the cost of the warping item. Story missions are essentially the same but usually require scouring areas looking for npcs with exclamation or lock signs on them (so much for sleuthing!).

After 10 hours there is no challenge and no plot. Seeing your digimon pointlessly reach champion-level in droves, with no space to add more is the only reward for bothering with this game. At least the game features a coliseum. It might become somewhat better later, but i already wasted too many hours to bother finding out.

With a deep, lengthy story this game depicts a world of a much more mature and dark tone than it's kid friendly counterpart. With evolution being tied more to challenges and performing certain feats, there's a certain feeling of achievement in evolving your digimon that's not present in Pokemon's more vague evolution mechanics that usually require strategy guides to figure out.
Combat is satisfying and intuitive with a healthy dose of challenge thrown in. However, the story tends to meander about a bit towards the middle sections. Some parts leave you high and dry not sure of where you're supposed to go for a certain quest and can leave you stranded for hours. And if the excuse is that you're supposed to 'sleuth' your way through those sections then I can't agree. Any segment that makes you choose between wandering aimlessly for an hour looking for an unknown location in the world or just looking it up on GameFAQs is one that's poorly designed and unfun. And when a lot of those areas tend to have the same, blue data cyber look to them, with no variety, it can be fairly monotonous to re-explore all these old areas over and over again.
All in all though, if you don't mind keeping a walk-through pulled up for when you get stuck and can enjoy the game for what it gets right and forgive what it gets wrong, you could do much worse than to check out this title. There's a lot of variety in the digimon you'll find yourself facing, and to see what new mon you'll find next can be an exciting and fun experience. If a future title can use the strengths found in this game and couple it with a more refined experience, we may well see a truly remarkable game.

Long story short, Digimon Story CS brings a heavy J-RPG feel of a game that includes the battle system similar to a Final Fantasy 7 or 10. The funny thing about it is that it works kinda great! What made the game for me is that it brings a fresh-kind of vibe to the game, this also includes unique characters, cool art designs and the story is pretty cool if i say so myself.

If you're heavily into anime, J-RPGs and most of all, Digimon - it should be a no brainer that you HAVE to get this game. Sure, it's a little pricey for a HD-redesign (i guess?) but i've clocked in over 50 hours and i'm still going.

After having 100 hours in the game and beating it on hard, (the main story anyway) there are a few things that really have to be noted. These being how the whole "Detective" part doesn't belong, the difficulty settings are crazy extreme, and how the game seems to be designed as a grind but offers no good areas to grind.

First off there are 2 games here, Digimon, and some really time consuming detective side story. The main plot is generic Digimon plot, if you think you know what that is, you know exactly what it is, and that's ok. It's not great but it's ok, and having that story as an option to see and invest in would be great, however there is no choice, you will watch every bit of dialogue with English subtitles like it or not. I played this game while watching YouTube, I'd say out of the 80 ish hours it took me to beat the game on hard, a solid 20 would be dialogue, like there are segments of 5-10 minutes where I would just have my controller smashing X while doing something else. Due to this you get a very slow paced game, the fact that everything can't be skipped on new game + is horrendous. On top of this you have this janky side thing of being a detective, basically side quests. And really the most basic of side quests at that, go here, talk, go here, talk, go here, fight, get item after winning, hope the game will teleport you back to main office so you don't have to manually get there. After completing every single "Case" I was so meh with the system, it just feels like adding a skip dialogue option, and having your decisions in dialogue actually matter would go a long way.

I played the game on hard, this basically meant that I needed some basic things, Penetrating attacks, flat damage attacks (does 150 no matter what), a million restore items, and luck. The worst part in this game is running into an enemy you can't hurt because it's defense is just too high. I would have ultimate level Digimon that I had to turn back to champions because the champions had better moves. Every boss on hard isn't hard, it's just that some of them get to pull of some funky OP combos that you can't do anything about. So some boss types that are brutal, 1: My defense is too high for you to hurt me, oh and I heal, go back watch the cut scene to fight me again. 2: I have a really amazing combo move and since I get more moves per turn on hard mode you'd better just sit tight and pray I don't use them. (so there's the moves that deal tons of damage and heal the boss for a percent of damage done, so pretty much they will get full health and you will be at half health, so use that twice, you lose. My personal favorite is putting all the players Digimon to 1 health then using any AOE.) And 3: I counter your team, better lose then go make a new team. So those were annoying to deal with, and I finally switched to normal mode after beating the final boss and being upset with some of the Case battles killing 4-5 of my guys before I even got 1 turn in. Boy did I feel powerful, that boss who'd just took out my strongest 3 without me getting a turn got beat.. without him getting a turn... Now I don't need anything close to perfect balance in my PVE content, but Hard and Normal may as well be called "Grind and don't get unlucky" and "how do i even lose?" respectively.

And the grind, oh man this game loves it's grind. First off early game there is no way to train well, the best place to train is the tournaments, and if you beat the tournament you no longer have a place to train EXP. So you obviously throw the last game in the tourney every time. This is so boring. It's not fun and it's poor design. And on hard, you have to do it. Well, unless you wanna save exploit the digifarm, which is pretty much what you'll have to do eventually. The exploit pretty much breaks the EXP system in the game, I'm talking like level 0-60 off one fight, and the weird part is that it still takes a decent time to amass a team of strong Digimon this way. I would recommend doing it as it didn't ruin the game for me at all and would have let me make a more unique team way faster.

In the end I like this game, but a game having un-skipable long cut-scenes, nowhere to properly grind EXP in an absurdly grindy game, and difficulty settings that aren't balanced in the slightest, (well I guess that means the game just isn't balanced but you know what I mean) make the whole game really laughable. The other parts of the game are well done but you need to have the basics of a game down before you get to add cool features. Combat? Great. Digital world? Good. Digifarms? Amazing. Basic game design in an rpg? pretty meh.

As for pvp it's also an unbalanced mess, but at least it's unbalanced for everyone so I kinda enjoy it.

    Overall a 8-9/10 game built on a 2-4/10 foundation

Sure pokemon games are good but they're so identical from one another that puts call of duty to shame.

Anyway, after hearing of this game I decided to give it a go, knowing it's a turned base rpg - which automatically makes it better than 90% of the rest - and with the roster of well-known Digimon which really helps. I mean it: seeing Palmon as my starter Digimon gave me the shivers and nostalgia from back when I watched the Digimon cartoon, probably one of my favorite series of my childhood - and back then pokemon was still pretty good too. The more I played the more I just loved to finally get my team of Digimon, like Greymon or Angemon (I screamed like a fangirl at her sight) or Leomon (R.I.P.) and more.
Not just that: each Digimon has an iconic skill that has its own animation and it's just like the anime: angemon's knuckle, Lillymon's cannon, Greymon's meteor! It makes me wish this game was available back when it was new, it would've blown pokemon away by a longshot!

I could go on for hours and tell you why this is amazing but let's be real here: unless you never liked Digimon this might be half a turn-off because none of these details might get you. When I got Lillymon I was literally the happiest man in a while and alongside Garudamon and Metalgreymon, it was the best feeling ever to have your own dream team
But if you never liked it, or just never got really into Digimon, this might be only half the fun and a tough cookie in general. Just beware.

Anyway, let's switch to combat, which is very good as you can use 3 Digimon in battle and carry 8 with you - depending on your character's memory. The combat, as I said, it's your generic turn-based RPG that works and it's pretty simplistic too, having 3 types of Digimon (Virus, Vaccine, Data) alongside 8 weaknesses (Water, Fire, Plant - Electricity, Earth, Wind - Light and Dark), which can be mixed and allow you to do up to triple damage. Some Digimon can also have no weaknesses or very little of it, such as Flamedramon who's a Fire Armor type (only weak to water).
In addition, each Digimon can learn up to 20 moves but only use 6 in combat and as far as I know, these skills are carried over while digivolving, making the formation of the perfect Digimon group a challenge of its own.

Overall, the combat is good and has tons of iconic Digimon, and it's very vast and expanded. Too bad it's ungodly unbalanced.
Normal is far too easy and you can almost do every battle on auto mode (minus the bosses, some of which are really tough) and hard is, well, hard enough that'll make even normal battles tough and make sure you save anytime.
I appreciate the fact that it has a difficulty slider but I also wished that the game would be overall balanced without resulting in "ultra-easy mode" and "Insane mode".

And last but not least, the story, and I won't go any deeper as it could be a spoiler but let me just say it's very, VERY hard to follow. The game has a hub world system so it's reasonable to say that there are not huge places to explore: only dungeons and city locations. The problem is not that though: the main problem is that the story keeps jumping focus all the time and it makes the story really hard to follow.
For example in a chapter (I think 4?) you get tasked to prove that ghost exists: great, you think it's a digital ghost right? Nope! Ghosts are real, you proved their existence! Case closed...what?! That's it? Yes, that's it.

This feels like a subquest mini-plot but it's actually in the main quest! These mini-plots constantly stop the flow and makes it all harder to enjoy the really good plot of the game: it has dark turns - extremely dark ones too - and its tone is taken seriously all the time, but without losing its opportunity to remind you that "it's a game about digital monsters and some of them are weirdly shaped".

It's really great when it goes on the plot and tries to tackle on the real deal.
it's really unfun when the game decides to stop and make me do useless chores.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this game if you're a Digimon fan but if you aren't I would recommend it as a decent jrpg with "monster catching" elements and an overall good story that while hard it is quite good on its own. Really hard to say no so give it a shot: you might enjoy Digimon more than you think!

PS: the game lacks English dubbing so for those who aren't into reading while watching, get ready to direct your eyes on the bottom of the screen 24/7!

I understand these games flaws, such as the closed world, but we've been far too spoiled by games such as skyrim in my opinion, the combat is far too easy on the easy difficulty aside from the royal knights battles, but this is easily fixed by turning your game to hard mode. You can't digivolve into the strongest monsters without enoug API, and "API" requires you to level up your Digimon (preferably lvl 99 for the most points), then keep de-volving and digivolving your Digimon several times. Unfair padding at its' worst.

Besides that, it's a pretty good game. Great visuals for a PS Vita game, a story that's engaging and a lot of side content for those who have the patience for that. It's great to see a more mature take on the Digimon franchise. However, when you spend more time on grinding than the story itself, it'll anger you. As a fan of the Digimon franchise, it is very hard for me to find bad things to say about this game because despite its flaws, of which there are quite a few, I can’t help but absolutely love it. We finally get a true RPG with an original story where we play the goggle-clad protagonist on a mission to save both the real and digital worlds.
Now, all of my fandom aside, there are some issues to discuss. Cyber Sleuth is a port of a Vita game, and it’s not hard to tell. The UI tends to be too much and a bit awkward, so it’s clear it was not reworked for the PS4 version. Visuals, while smooth and colorful, are not anywhere near hardware pushing, and yet they have the charm of the long lost PS2 JRPG era. The best way I can describe the visuals and vibe is an up-scaled Persona 4.
Get lost in the cyberpunk aesthetic of Cyber Sleuth, and get ready to grind, cause oh boy, you are gonna be doing A LOT of that. When it comes to RPGs, I think we all expect a bit of grinding, and sometimes it can even be optional altogether depending on how you as a player choose to tackle RPG’s. That is not the case here. As you raise your Digimon, you will have to level them, evolve them, de-evolve them, level them, and evolve them again. This doesn’t really become too gratuitous until you want to push them past the Champion stage, however. Thanks to the games ABI stat (Ability) and level cap mechanics, you can count on plenty of grind time to get those badass Ultimates, Megas, and even the elusive Ultras. Repeatedly evolving and de-evolving your Digimon will raise their level cap and their ABI stat, both of which usually have high requirements for Ultimate level evolution and beyond.
Hands down, the elephant in the room is the localization. Bamco – why? Just why? Sloppy at best, the translation fails to be anything close to impressive. Dialog with NPC’s is fine for the most part, and the focal story dialog is great, but anything outside of that is a shot in the dark. The Digiline system – a means by which you communicate to friends and your Digimon in the digifarm via texting – is riddled with broken English or unintelligible babble. Considering the almost year gap between the release of the Japanese and English versions, and the fact that they did not record an English dub, this just seems really stupid. Despite its flaws, Digimon Story’s charm bleeds through and it kept me hooked all the way to the end. I spent just shy of 105 hours playing through the well-paced, if fairly linear, story, and finishing up all optional content and DLC quests, as well as getting that beautiful Platinum trophy.
    Pros:
    ---So, so charming
    ---Badass digvolutions
    ---Interesting and well-paced story
    Cons:
---Bad translation outside of main scenario
    ---SO GRINDY
    ---Clunky UI

It really is a great first step in a new age of Digimon games. The story is great, even if it doesn't really pick up till mid way, but once you get into it , it is worth the wait it is a game thats great for everyone, even the older fans. The battles are great, animations and models are perfect, some might say its repetitive but lets be real, its just how these *mon* games are. The Digilab is a great feature, so many hours spent on my farms and Digivolving and figuring out stats, its a great aspect to the game. The overall Art style and deign is just superb, it makes me want an art-book, wallpapers, themes and even some merchandise even more.

That said it could use some improvements, more Digimon, better laid out dungeons, some character customization options, bigger maps and a little more of an open world, more online features and a handheld digivice.

Have both for PS4 and a PS Vita. I love it on my Vita more for no reason.

The series has returned, and this time it had me stunned! From the beloved DS game, I've always follow the Digimon series. And now this came out, I thought they'd never localize it, but they did and it's awesome. The game's story and gameplay is very good, it's fun to play and it's not tedious to farm unlike the DS games. I'd recommend buying this to try if you're new to digimon. Great game! It is a very fun JRPG, with a simple yet very good battle system, and amazing story! That is in my opinion an annoying flaw, because species missions are important and you don't get what you want usually...

While some dungeons are a bit repetitive especially because of having exactly the same graphics, the variety of Digimon you get to find in them is quite good. The Digimon list is not as massive as the one from World Dawn and Dusk, but all fan-favourites are here for you to train! Getting the DLC content for free in this version is also cool, as you get many more missions to do and a few gems you can use early in the game like BlkAgumon and BlkGabumon.

In terms of difficulty, the game isn't too hard, although some bosses can be tricky to beat due to having overpowered moves. You can have some intense battles, and some of them while easy are fun. Also the game is quite long, especially if you want to get everything available as you play. That is yet another positive because with its great story it is good it lasts for long, sometimes you don't want to do secondary missions to keep going on the story!

All in all, a very fun game, worth buying in my opinion, especially when its prize lowers in special Pstore sales!

A fantastic modern digimon game. Pretty decent story and good combat. I wish the game had english dub, but subtitles suffice. Bandai Namco needs to keep localizing their digimon games and bringing them over.

Digimon comes to life in this game. It is truly great. The story is unlike any game I have played before. The characters are fun and sometimes funny. I couldn't finish the game because it felt repetitive after a while but other than that it was fun.

At first the game seemed like your average JRPG with Digimon thrown into the mix. Then I started realizing several of the voice over tracks were missing randomly, a good portion of the English translation was not quality checked, several stat requirements to get the best Digimon had me spending several hours digivolving/de-digivolving Digimon to get enough stats, and found a game breaking glitch with the PS4 slim's hardware in either Chapter 12 or 20 (depending on who you ask, it happened right before the end credits for me).

The game looked like it was going to be fun, was for a bit but then had several short comings that was probably a result of a rushed release, big budget cuts, or lack of QA. Hopefully the next game will be better but until then I'll be selling my copy off and wait for a better Digimon game to come out.

Great game at the start, very fun but after 10 hours its easy to get bored as its a lot of tedious grinding on the same monsters in the same location.

Lot to be desired for Movement to different locations, quest assistance and combat can be improved.

But now that I've finished this work of greatness, I wanna go back and smack the me who nearly gave up for almost missing a nearly perfect JRPG. This game had everything you could possibly ask for in it's genre. Amazing characters, a great story, a leveling system and training system that's actually fun and efficient, engrossing side quests, and a perfected battle system that's so good you find yourself not even using it's full intricacies. This is also the first time I've ever been excited to play a New Game+, since I not only want to play as the girl avatar to see the differences, but it carries over EVERY bit of content minus key items! I could go on for paragraphs about what an amazing game Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth was, but it's enough to say it was one of the greatest JRPGs I've ever played, and it easily revived the Digimon fan in me that I had thought was dead. Turns out, I just had EDEN Syndrome. Expand

As many people say, this game is one of the best Digimon games created so far. You can build your team with the digimons you like, good battle mechanics and the concept of the story is great.

However, there were two things I did not like: 1. The story is very slow. There are 20 Chapters, and the first 10 were boring sometimes, and the last 10 were very exciting. 2. It is a Digimon

    2. It is a Digimon game where you don't explore the Digital World. What happened with the forests, deserts, water, snow, mountains, and all those cool environments of the Digital World like in previous games?

If they plan to create another Digimon game like this, I will play it definitely, but I hope they can include those 2 things. That would make a 9 or 10 review for the game in my opinion.

Cyber Sleuth doesn't reinvent the JRPG that comprises its core, but for a Digimon title, this is a solid step in the right direction.
