Unless you start listening to your community, your plan to milk this thing for years to come is going to die really quickly and you will be kicking rocks.

This is the review in progress of a Diablo III veteran. I’m 38 years old, have 5-month old daughter and run my own small company. So, take my comments as the comments of someone who loved Diablo III and doesn’t have much patience for more work/slogging in a video game.

This is the review in progress of a Diablo III veteran. I’m 38 years old, have 5-month old daughter and run my own small company. So, take my comments as the comments of someone who loved Diablo III and doesn’t have much patience for more work/slogging in a video game.

I have now put 15 hours into Diablo IV, and I think Diablo III was just more accessible and more fun. I even think Diablo III's simplified levelling/character building was better or at least easier to grasp. I thought Diablo III made me feel powerful as I levelled while Diablo IV makes sure I never do, and I frankly don't care for this open world thing. I don't think Diablo IV is a bad game, it's just that my first Diablo game (and therefore my benchmark) is Diablo III, which was faster paced, more lively, and felt like you played as an unstoppable force.

Diablo IV feels like a dreary slog through a dreary world where you're not powerful, and every fight is a fight for your life. Maybe that's what Blizzard wanted and if so, they nailed it. But I don't enjoy it as much.

    1. The open world "choose your own adventure" is not real choice. In Diablo IV, it looks like I can go anywhere, but I really can't because the story happens where it happens. I liked Diablo III's linear model better. It felt more curated so you got the appropriate challenge for the level you had as it took you through the story.

    2. Side quests are the most time-wasting and boring thing ever. I don’t know why I’m killing 25 skeletons in the woods for some small XP and a little gold. Where are my drops? They’re literally just padding quests that add nothing to the game. If levelling mattered, they might serve more of a purpose.

    3. Diablo IV nails the atmosphere/look of the game, but I cannot hear the darn music. I had to YouTube Diablo IV’s soundtrack just to hear it.

    4. I find that levelling is basically meaningless in Diablo IV because everything scales to your level. As you level your skills get more potent but so do your enemies. I'm yet to get to a point where I feel powerful even though I unlocked all the skills by level 33.

4.A. I remember in Diablo III when my Wizard got what I call the "Doom Laser" at some point and it was so satisfying to just level a room full of enemies. Not a single skill in Diablo IV does that. None of the skills feel powerful. Even my ultimate only feels good because all my other spells feel so weak. Instead of giving me a genuinely good spell for levelling up, I got spell 1.0, which I now have to upgrade to 5.0 for it to be "good".

    5. Why have level scaling and World tiers? I'm playing solo on WT I and I'm just barely scraping by some strongholds (down to my last health bar with no potions). I find it stressful, not fun. I cannot imagine WT II, III and IV are any fun.

    6. Unfun enemies: not only are there hordes of trash mobs, the bosses just spam bullsh!t attacks. The last stronghold had a boss that froze me all the time. It's not fun to be frozen all the time so the boss can wail on you. It's not "hard" content that I need to overcome. It's just to throttle you by playing punch-for-punch until the boss falls down or I die.

    7. The inventory… In Diablo III you could carry like 100 things - gems were their own slot - and I could play for like 1-2 hours before I had to go back to town to dump loot. In Diablo IV, I cannot make it through one dungeon without having to go back to town to empty my inventory, which holds 30 things including my gems, which is 12 slots, and then go back. It's annoying, it’s just padding.

    8. In Diablo IV, I'm on my first character, Sorcerer, at level 33, still mostly in the Fractured Peaks, and I'm still in Act I of the story, and it's been like 15 hours. It feels like a slog to get anywhere on the map. All I want to do is loot this dungeon and it feels like 20 minutes of walking / slaying un-fun enemies that drop trash loot, or little XP and gold. It feels like padding, like an artificial extension of the game. I don't want to spend 20 minutes walking from place to place - I want the game to get me there naturally like in Diablo III and be rewarded with a cool boss fight or new enemy types or new scenery and then I get a cool story reveal that drives me forward.

I think I can summarize Diablo IV like the quest where I finally met Inarius (the angel):

I climbed a whole mountain, in a distant corner of the map, through a blizzard and hundreds of enemies who dropped no good loot and weren’t fun to fight, all the way to Kor Valar just to so Inarius could tell me to f**k off.

It’s not worth the 15 minutes of grind to do that, and that is the whole game so far. Slog, slog, slog, loading screen, some story tidbit. Rinse. Repeat. Don’t feel powerful just keep fighting for your life, just keep grinding. Diablo III was faster, more fun, with better loot drops and better music and a real power fantasy. Not this drudgery we got in Diablo IV. I'm going back to Diablo III.

The game seems to have a good storyline, but the disconnections ruin the game. Yes, this game is completely online and doesn't have to be. This experience has let hackers hit Blizzard servers with DDoS attacks, ruining the experience. Give it 3-4 months after launch; it might be worth playing. That is what I plan to do.

During the daytime when I play with a friend it's problematic... in that in the past I never needed help to get past bosses - now I do.

Then later at night, it's a glitchy mess: - bouncing off invisible walls, can't just walk - hitting buttons in battle and nothing happens - in the middle of a fight and NOTHING is changing, but then I'm dead or sometimes everything else is dead -

Only reason it gets a 4 is that usually (Eastern Time USA) daylight hours it's ok, kind of tough with the bosses and VERY miserly with the drops, but OK - not how I remember D3 so fondly

It's supposedly a social game which is why it has to be online and you can't play when servers crash, but there's no group finder feature so you'll never play with others in dungeons. There's no build diversity for the classes. You are locked into one of two meta builds. If you play sorcerer, you have to pick all ice, lightning, or fire skills because the skills don't benefit cross spell types. Most of the quintessential diablo skills are useless. I came to play classic diablo sorcerer skills like hydra but they nerfed that because it scaled too well at level 25. Essentially I paid $70 for a classic diablo sorc experience and still haven't gotten that yet. Players were having too much fun power leveling friends alts so they nerfed that. They even added an additional two seconds to the cast time to leave a completed dungeon because the pace of play needed to be slower. Seriously who intentionally adds longer loading times to a ARPG? Mount is clunky AF. If you touch the directional stick while they mount up, your character will be locked in place until you let them finish their initial burst of movement when mounting up. One of the only fun things to do was helltides but they nerfed those because community was making maps to determine where the best chests were. Now the cinders drop at lower rate and it takes even more cinders to open the good chests. Blizzard admits that the casting classes are underperforming because their main stat intelligence drives elemental resistances and they acknowledge that elemental resistances are broken and wildly underperforming, but say they aren't going to fix anything about that until season 2 in several months. It's just not an entertaining game. I wouldn't even buy this game if it were on sale for $20 right now. It's not a finished game and the developers are actively making it worse with ongoing changes. After diablo 3 launched and was meh, they really got it right with reaper of souls xp and subsequent patches. They've since forgotten all those lessens and are charging full price for a markedly worse game that they are actively making worse with every patch. Expand

Early acess 02/06/23 : minor bugs, servers were working pretty well. I progress through the campaign with my friends and it went pretty well. But once we achieved endgame features, there's a lot of bugs.
Nightmare dungeons : bugged. You can't go in with friends because you will be desynchronised 1 dungeon out of 2.
Helltide : unplayable with lags. you'll die everytime you take a lag, and you'll lose your components.

Release date 06/06/23 : lags everytime. Permanent lags, so totally unplayable endgame features

    08/06/23 22h30 GMT+1 : Crash server. Can't play. Only 2 days since release.

Enough with server problems. There's also class balance problems. Barbarian is Godlike, rogue is too squishy (gets one shotted by almost everything), necromancer has literraly 0 mobility, druid is unkillable, and sorcerer is the only balanced class.

Let's talk about campaign : Act 1, 2, 3 ,4 and 5 are Star Wars Disney tier. Act 6 is a real masterpiece.
Campaign boss fights are for retarded ppl. they have 0 mechanics, they just have a ton of hp.
Only Lilith have a real boss fight. And Elias after the campaign will have a real boss fight too.

The Artistic Direction is perfect. that's why i give them 1 point.
Sound Design is good, but Lost Ark is better at it.

There's a lack of features in the UI. We can't see other player's profile. there's no statistics, can't watch playtime, there's no ladder.
There's no search bar for items in the stash. Gems take too much space

And there's a ton of other bugs, like sometimes you can't use any ability or dash. Sometimes the horse's pathfinding will totally bug. Cinematics will sometimes bug when you play with friends, only 1 in the group will the dialogues / cinematics.

There's no diversity in the bestiary and the dungeon bosses or in the decorations. All monsters are recycled with different color, and they are spread all over the entire map. Dungeons are procedural but you will see always the same monsters in them.
Dungeon Bosses are catastrophic. Distant / Mage bosses are retarded, they do no damage so you can just burst them with any build.
Melee Bosses are a nightmare, they run faster than you, have an attack speed higher than the light speed. So you almost can't kite them and if you don't play barbarian, druid or sorcerer frost you'll just instant die.

To sum up, this game is **** tier and doesn't deserve your money, let Blizzard sink.

I was a fan of D2 and D2-R and even played D3 regularly. I waited. First of all, the game is boring. Secondly, it's hard to play. I'll start with the graphics: I changed the color adjustments, sharpness, and color saturation several times. Nothing helps: maps are poorly readable, characters in cities are almost invisible, ARMOR has barely visible details, including a stash - you can't see what you hover over with the cursor, what is the special symbol, color, etc. Skill tree - graphics hopelessly smaller than game settings, it's hard to see what you choose in the next level. The whole game is grey, unreadable when playing in cities and in combat (and I have good eyesight!). Playability: you see almost no change in damage when you add levels to a skill, getting the items needed to level up your gear - again, the graphics! it takes a lot of effort to see lying items worth collecting during the game, it's best to hit everything you see and it slows down the game. Navigation: tasks (subtitles are especially small, I tried to change them) do not suggest where to go, sometimes you don't know which way to go after leaving the city in order to complete the main task. Script: I don't know what the character is doing. I don't know what motivation he has to look for something and push himself into this nightmare at all, instead of buying a horse and going to warmer countries. Another thing (I thought it affected a small number of people but I read the reviews that it doesn't): the game increases the problems with nausea. In my case, it is possible to play for a maximum of 1.5 hours, then the headache and dizziness begin. I don't know why this happens, it's not my job but with D-2, D-2R and D-3 I've never had such problems. And the price: for such "something" that I don't want to play, I paid 100 dollars. I regret the money spent. I've been waiting so much for this game. Expand

Based on the franchise’s history, Diablo IV has large boots to fill, but does an admiral job of meeting this longtime fan’s expectations. Diablo IV maintains the core gameplay that made it popular while combining the best elements of the the previous games. The continuous open world is an improvement over the completely separate acts with an intriguing story that feels more nuanced than the previous entries. All the elements of of a great action RPG are present, most importantly Diablo’s reward loop system where players can spend years playing through new seasons and characters to experiment with different builds and try to collect the best equipment. The gameplay is repetitive and simple but is still a joy to binge play, especially with friends.
