This is honestly one of the best games I have ever played. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and have already replayed it twice. Choices really impact the story. The acting is incredible and I loved all three characters (although Kara was my favorite). I could not recommend this game more.

Detroit: Become Human is yet ANOTHER masterpiece from the studio. It’s harsh and emotional, powerful, impactful, unforgiving, strangely topical, beautiful, sweeping and yet somehow achingly personal.... I’ll have to play through a few more times to see if it truly rivals HEAVY RAIN as the jewel in their crown, but my gut feeling right now says yes. The narrative is truly anchored in its three main performances , but is boosted further by powerful secondary leads as well. The graphics are as beautiful as anything I’ve ever seen, especially on the PS4Pro. The score is moving and fitting. The cinematography is gorgeous and absolutely makes up for the lack of camera control by the player. These games have always (purposely) blurred the line between “film” & “game”. This is no different. Do not go in expecting that. If you think this sounds interesting, give it a shot. I promise you’ll be as taken by the narrative and delivery as I was for over 10 hours. I really enjoyed playing this game despite having a ho-hum reaction to prior QuanticDreams titles (Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls). I found myself not wanting to stop and when I did have to stop I found myself thinking about the decisions I made and decisions that were yet to be made.

There are plenty of reviews which praise the graphics or the gameplay, so I want to take a slightly more philosophical view in this review. This will be a bit lengty, so bear with me.

Looking back at the time spent playing Detroit: Become Human, I would have to say my biggest complaint with the game is that there's just no subtlety in the way the conflict between Android and Humans is portrayed.

With exception to the one chapter between Android Markus and his Human owner Karl, every Human/Android interaction is negative or abusive. Even as you walk down the street you see Human owners verbally and physically abusing their Android helpers. When interacting directly with Humans as Kara, Connor, or Markus, there's always a sneer or an underlying skepticism, no matter how peaceful or normal you act.

The closest we get to a positive Human/Android interaction is the relationship between Lieutenant Hank Anderson and Connor. But that starts off very abusive and only turns into a positive experience if Connor makes the right set of decisions.

The game bludgeons the player with this situation where Humans are complete garbage towards Androids. Anyone with a single shred of empathy would side with freeing the Androids given the situation as presented.

Additionally, when Markus begins freeing the Androids and granting them free will, all of them follow him without question. Not a single one of them makes the decision to stay with their Human owners. Historically we know this is inaccurate and in all cases where a group is oppressed there are some who feel loyal enough (or otherwise compelled) to stay with their oppressors. Not a single Android in Detroit: Become Human does this, not even when Markus explicitly offers the choice. Except as a vague "Public Opinion" meter, no Humans among the general public support the Androids' cause throughout the course of the game, even when the Androids protest peacefully. No Android/Human collaboration. No Humans marching with Androids in their own version of Android Lives Matter. The game pits Humans on one side and Androids on the other.

I feel like the situation was too binary where the player's only real choice was to determine if the Androids would end up as bad as, or better than, the Humans. Maybe that was the point of the exercise but having the sides aligned as either/or muted the overall message, in my opinion.

Otherwise, this was a fantastic story where I felt compelled to play through it completely three times and reload varying checkpoints to see different endings another three beyond that. I hesitate to say it's a $60 value but it's definitely worth picking up and playing multiple times. I'm torn between an 8 and a 9, so for the purposes of Metacritic I'm rounding down to an 8, but would give it a solid 8.5 if I could do half scores.

The world of Detroit is utterly beautiful. This game should be GOTY. The writing is on par with any modern television show or movie that gets rave reviews. While QD’s previous titles were all great games, Detroit is in a league of its own. Each character’s storyline was engaging, but Bryan Dechart especially knocked it out of the park as Connor. The three protagonists; Connor, Kara, and Markus are all very interesting and have great stories. Some of the games greatest strengths are how well it fleshes out the story of its world, Detroit, and how it presents the city. The presentation of this game is on another level. The cinematography, the graphics and facial detail on all the character models are some of the best in gaming. Where the game really shines though is in its choices and branching storylines. The game has an enormous range of choices and outcomes, meaning you will most likely have a very different experience from other players. There are multiple endings, you can save all the characters, let them all die, or any combination in between. Its greatest weakness is in some of its endings. Odds are if you get one of the bad endings, you will not be satisfied with it. But thats okay, because the game is designed for you to replay it and make different choices to see how things could have played out differently. If you achieve one of the good endings, the story is much more rewarding and satisfying. Connor's sole purpose is to bring down androids that have become deviant; Markus is out to show the world that androids are living beings; and Kara only wants to live her life and have a family. Throughout the story, you face challenges and choices that will mold what type of android that character becomes. These characters can also live or die by your choices if you choose to play on the experienced difficulty.

When playing Connors story, you get teamed up with Lt. Anderson and have to work together to solve deviant cases. Anderson is not particularly fond of androids and it is up to the player to decide if they want to try to change that or not. Regardless of what you choose, your mission is to find the leader of the deviant androids and take him down. Markus is an android that lived a simple life before it got turned upside down by some unfortunate events. After these events Markus finds a deviant safe haven, Jericho, and decides he will no longer live his life staying quiet. North, Josh, and Simon are androids that Markus enlist to help him with his cause. Working as a team, you four will ultimately decide which path Markus will go down; peace or violence. Kara is an android owned by Todd Williams who tasks Kara with keeping the house clean and watching after his daughter, Alice. Playing as Kara seems straightforward until her conscience awakens and you realize that Alice's living situation is not a safe one. Kara decides that Todd has become too out of control and flees the home with Alice. It is at this point that Kara realizes that she has to find a way to start a life and keep Alice safe.

Detroit: Become Human has things I liked and disliked about it. The things I liked were the in-game choices, the story, and the acting. This game has many choices you can make throughout the story that will have different effects on each character. Someone disliking you or you making a choice that ends your characters life are a few examples. These choices enhanced the story experience because you don't know what your choices will have an effect on at that moment and sometimes you get surprised later down the road. These choices are also delivered by some great actors who gave great performances. Most of the time I found myself being moved by the characters words and emotions. That is why I enjoy Detroit: Become Human's story so much.

Some things I did not like were the controls and some of the dialogue responses. There were times when I would find my character getting stuck on the smallest object and have trouble when trying to do small turnarounds. Another control issue was when trying to complete half circles. When trying to do them, they would register sometimes but seemed to have an issue of you tried to do them too fast. Luckily this was not too much of an issue because half circles did not come up during quick time events. Even though the acting is great in this game, there were some times when the dialogue seemed too scripted. A couple of times I can remember are from the beginning of the game. When Connor tells Daniel he is not lying and when Emma denies Daniel's accusation. These dialogue responses were too different from what was going on that it took me out of the moment. Despite these two issues it did not ruin the game for me.

Detroit: Become Human is a great game to play if you are looking for a customizable story with multiple endings and playstyles. Although I did run across some issues, I was able to play through it because they were not too hindering. Overall, I liked the game and will continue playing until I get all flowchart options unlocked. I recommend picking up the game if you are looking for something enjoyable to play or if you are a fan of Quantic Dream games.

It's also the best writing of a Quantic Dream game to date, with a lot less of that awkward 'French to English' overcompensation problem that we saw in previous games. The gameplay is more refined than any previous game in their library too, offering a greater variety of scenarios and types of scenes to interaction with. And these are the strongest lead characters for a QD game as they all have clear goals, motivations, distinct characteristics and memorable moments to make their stories resonate. Major props especially to Connor, who I want to be a real character just to bounce off conversations with! I only had a few minor but not major issues with movement controls now and then, but that's the only thing I had any issues.

A lot of reviews will point out how it is a very familiar civil rights story, but, while they are not exactly wrong, they are ignoring that ultimately execution is what matters in making a good story. We see these stories all the time and usually they're praised for being bold or daring (especially if it's a 'trendy' topic). Yet somehow this game doesn't merit the same praise because of people's backlash to David Cage and because of topics it didn't discuss that are not even relevant to this story (sorry, but race doesn't really matter much to synthetic lifeforms since they are in themselves their own race). I feel it is intellectually dishonest the way some critics have bashed this game as clumsy for not meeting some imaginary bar by those critics. It can only be judged as what it is and what I personally feel is that it is a new benchmark for cinematic driven games that has lingered with me long after I played it.

Detroit: Become Human looks and sounds great, and includes key player choices throughout, though it could have benefited greatly from a tighter script. While it’s commendable that Quantic Dream tried to cover hot-button issues in a big-budget video game, it works better when focused on the personal character moments than the bigger themes that don’t dig deep enough to make a meaningful impact.

Although the narrative is fairly linear, there are enough branching paths over the course of the game to make it feel like your actions matter. That allows Detroit to still be fun even on multiple playthroughs – and for an interactive movie, that’s a rare praise. [Issue#231, p.68]
