The game started out rough but as they continued to update the game it gotten better than the last. This one was the best they could do, there was no need for a destiny 2, two was a half baked idea and a cash grab that only a few can see that. Overall Destiny 1 is good just wish they didn't stop events like trials and iron banner.

Vanilla Destiny is weird. It has amazing gameplay and good visuals. But there is literally no story, no characters and missions are just horrible. It has potential, but that potential isn't used in the vanilla Destiny.

This game had massive potential. In fact, there are many hidden events that people could have enjoyed if they were able to put the lore into the game. Still way better than vanilla Destiny 2.

If not for the generic and at times cringy the dialogue is written, the story would be more interesting, which is a shame because the lore is amazing. When Destiny truly shines is when you play mandatory co-op missions, the thing is that even those missions will feel repetitive as the bosses are more like sponges for bullets.

Another thing that I really liked besides the lore is the magnificent art direction, weapons, gear and graphic design of this universe are superb, music and landscapes in the other hand were cool and pretty but I'm not sure they were on the same height.

I really liked my time with Destiny but I also didn't overstay my time there, because as wide as the universe may seem to be, it sure can feel hollow pretty soon.

Let me start by saying I was hyped to believe this game will be bigger and more interesting. In reality it is Okey game and fun to kill time with but nothing special to write home about it. Story is very weak they should have just made it multiplayer only without single player.

From the get go this game feels shallow, with poor exposition and no explanation about pretty much anything. The Story... what story? Absolutely terrible and underwhelming. I thought at some point this was made by Michael Bay. If only it was.

Shooting mechanics are clearly designed to keep players engaged instead of amused. Progression is level and loot based, with a dedication to mindless grinding for ugly looking items. The drop rate of engrams is inconsistent and more rewarding when you just **** around outside of missions and strikes.

So, poor story, poor characters, no universe building, the lore is not even in the game (which is an offense on itself) and the game was released empty, but with two announced Expansions packs. Anti-consumer, that's what this game is.

Don't play this game alone, or it will be a terrible experience. At least with friends you'll be a little amused through playing this exhausting grind fest.

    It's an underwhelming game. I give it a 5/10.

The premise that Bungie built Destiny on was good but their execution thereof was displeasing. Had I not rejoined the game after taking a year break and buying the season pass, I would have given this a much lower rating, due to the fact that the true ending of the game was hidden behind a pay-wall disguised as "DLC"

It was decent from beginning to end of the story but once you complete that and the raid then there's pretty much nothing left to do except weekly raid grinding. It only opened up more once an expansion released but after 2 weeks the game just dries up again.

Bungie's Destiny IS a fun and enjoyable game, for about an hour and a half. This game is nothing but a pay to win game with very overpriced DLC. The story is very lazy and the characters are bland. But in the end, I loved the gameplay and graphics but that's about it.

EDIT: This review was written while I still thought there would be more than 10 hours of actual content. Once you beat the campaign, the "content" was merely repeating the same levels and enemies to get gear until you can finally get your numbers high enough to do the raid. Naturally, I was really salty about this. Destiny is not a traditional MMO. The world is sliced up into planets, with the tower on Earth being the hub. Buying, finding, and selling gear is incredibly streamlined, but there is not auction house or trading between players of any kind. The Economy in Destiny is purely based on Player-NPC interactions.

So why did I give the game a 9? For one, the enemies are really well designed and incredibly diverse. There are different factions of enemies you'll encounter and each requires a certain strategy to deal with. To describe three of the many factions: There are your standard halo-esq enemies with a blend of snipers, grunts, and heavies; There are your Zombie esq enemies that consist of zerg-rushing zombies and pot-shotting generals; And there are slow-moving teleporting enemies who use horde tactics to overwhelm players. Combine these enemies with varying terrain for different combat scenarios and the game rarely get repetitive.

The gun-play is incredibly refreshing in this age of standard modern-military shooters. The fast movement speed combined with the relatively slow projectile speed of the enemies weapons will make you duck and dodge constantly. Additionally, the hip fire on many of the guns is surprisingly accurate, to the point where it makes more sense to use hip-fire and retain mobility rather than use ADS in close combat situations. Finally, the melee attacks can often dish more damage than the guns themselves. In point blank situations, the best strategy is often to use melee and gun together in a sort of one-two punch that is incredibly satisfying.

The mounts are a joy to ride. Players get a speeder bike very early in the game that can take them from one end of a map to the other in minutes. Unlike other MMO's whos mounts are controlled by a simple point-and-go system, the mounts in Destiny are actually physics driven. The maps are also designed so that you'll never be going straight for long, as you will constantly be weaving between rocks and other obstacles. If you ever watched the speeder bike chase in Star Wars VI and wanted to play that, this is your chance.

The PvP in the game plays a lot like the original Halo trilogy, except you choose your weapon loadout instead of scavenge weapons. Players start out with only ammo for their normal gun (assault-rifles, pistols, etc) and special gun (shotguns, snipers, etc). Throughout the match, players can find ammunition for their heavy gun. The weapons players bring are the weapons they find in PVE, with the damage output scaled to be even. The only disadvantage for low-level players is the lack of abilities gained from levelup. All in all, Destiny's PvP is the Halo 4 multiplayer we were looking for.

I've heard a lot of people say the game is "grindy," and that the gameplay just consists of "go here, kill mobs, go there, kill more mobs." To that I say "what were you expecting?" Every first person shooter in existence can be described this way. The game, at times, can feel easy but every mission has a hard mode attached to it that is often overlooked. Playing on hard mode on a mission your level is a challenge similar to playing halo on Legendary.

All in all, Destiny is a mediocre MMO, but a Superb shooter. Playing solo is quite fun, and playing with friends is a grand experience. It is well worth the price of $60, especially when compared to other games of a similar pricetag. If you like Halo or other shooters, and don't care about MMO elements, then buy this game!

And apparently it’s the expansions because it’s not here in the base game...
And with activision shutting down multiplayer modes for those expansions the month this review comes out I’m not going to even bother them...
So while I’m sure Destiny is now this great experience with all its ad ons...
I’m going to just talk about the base game which is a repetitive and boring joke…
Destiny is a competitive and cooperative online only first person shooter where you play as 1 of 3 classes and create your own character
As an aggressive player I played as a titan..
There are 2 bases in this game that you turn in your quest progress 2, get new missions, fork out your real life cash for any weapons that are worth anything from loot boxes and get back to the grind of being a guardian…
    This game is co op...
But through my entire 9 hour journey in story mode I only had team mates in one mission…
The story mode is practically dead…
So you’re going to have to grind through this excuse of a story mode yourself…
Worse is that all 9 hours take place on the same 4 maps…
the missions just take your deeper into these maps each time..
There are some loot boxes here that are like playing a game of where waldo to find them...
so I just stuck to getting my loot from missions and enemy drops…
Leveling up in this game gives you upgrades for your grenades and suit
though the game doesn’t seem to balance in terms of xp if you are playing alone so late game missions are extremely frustrating..
I was playing through the final story mission at only level 14 because of how slow the game was handing levels out because it assumes I’m going to grind through boring story missions over and over or that I’m playing with other people…
I felt like I had to keep playing in these annoying no respawn zones over and over that would reset every time I died…
But these missions are all the same thing of bring up your ghost, go to a point on the map and shoot all of the stuff until there’s no more stuff to shoot rinse and repeat..
There is a competitive team based mode of 6vs6 like call of duty which is the best part of Destiny as a base game...
Here level advantages are taken away, but you’ll level up way faster than the story mode, you’ll get loot drops, and you’ll have way more fun doing it…
IF you were thinking about giving destiny a try before destiny 2 comes out there’s absolutely no reason to
there’s nothing here worth your time
    Give Destiny
    a 6/10

Im not saying a whole day, more like 8 hours. Now i understand that the game really opens up with raids and PVP after the story, but they got stale for me quick. PVP had a good idea but overall after doing the same thing 30+ times you get the idea and want a bit of variety, and unfortunately there wasn't enough diversity to keep me interested for very long. I have heard all of the expansions really do improve the game, and whilst the base game itself isn't a fail in terms of being a first person shooter, i didn't see and justification for paying for what should have been the game to begin with. The whole idea of visiting other planets in our solar system was an awesome concept and for its time the graphics picturing how these worlds would look were very detailed. But that is how far Destiny travels. The game's story line is weak and repetitive. End game is a major short fall. One of the biggest issues with the game is lack of matchmaking, a huge problem in a game that requires multiple players to beat certain missions. In one year the developers announced a sequel which really flattens the idea of this game being classed as a true MMORPG. The multiplayer is average, not great but really not that bad. Overall the game was a disappointment and even with recent patches and DLC's Destiny constantly comes undone with the lack of end game content. Have all Expansions 3 characters level 40 with roughly 310 light each. Currently still playing only with close friends.

After 2 years of playing I've decided to review this game. Broke it down to different parts to make it easier.

    First Person Shooter Aspect

Can't complain, it was done well. Coming from a series that spawned Halo, you know that the shooter aspect was going to be good. The controls are really responsive and give you the option to tweak the aiming speed etc. The balancing of weapons, well its a double edge sword because people will have different opinions and complaints on why their favourite gun has been nerfed and the gun they use least is OP. All I can say that it's a plus that Bungie have regular updates and monitor the usage of each gun and make changes if need be.

    RPG Aspect

Character creation is meh. 3 different species Human, Robot or Ascended Human. No difference between them apart from the type of dance emote they do. Could of gave them species perks to adapt to the players playstyle Eg. Elder Scrolls. The classes IMO are good, adopting the Hunter (ThiefRogue/DPS), Titan (Tank/Defence Support) and Warlock (Mage/Heals/Support). After the Taken King they employed another Class type to interchange them especially giving the Hunter a much needed support special.

After the Taken King Expansion, they've finally got the levelling correct. Getting good gear is still a big, long grind. The rewards on Crucible are still pathetic where 1st gets the **** gear compared to last. My friends joke around saying to play well but not come first to get good loot.

    Replayability

I'm still playing it whenever a new update comes in. A lot of players gave up on it, which I can understand. But I have a close knit of gamer friends who play just for fun as the Co Op in this game especially the Raids are second to none...apart from guess what?...the loot drops : ( (endless grinding!!!). Don't have any friends to game with? Look around for Clans, there are lots to choose from and most are very helpful.

Overall, a 6 praising the shooter component, the gear (even though its a grind to collect), Co Op and PvP. regular updates and events (the Sparrow Racing Event was a good change). I don't really play it anymore, but will jump on when my friends are on. That 10 year plan they have for this game...I don't think so.

    - 1 To most story missions that have been recycled over and over
    - 1 To the endless grind of loot (they should take pointers from Division and Borderlands)
    - 2 To the reward system on Crucible (PvP)

Post-update, the looting system is much more generous than it was, and that feeling when you find a legendary weapon or piece of armour is something you will want to experience.

However, the content in this release of Destiny is laughable, and the fact that Bungie and Activision will try to justify this with a season pass is a very worrying aspect for future big releases. Horrendous voice acting by that one from Game of Thrones does not help this game's cause either, even he sounds bored.

This could have been an even lower score if the Vault of Glass wasn't so enjoyable, but the fact that you can't matchmake for it and MUST gather a group of 6 is quite bizarre. 5 is an average and disappointing score, for an average and disappointing game.

Whether it be The Dark Below, The House of Wolves, or The Taken King, Destiny has always been struggling to find new ways to keep their players in the game and playing the game.

The mechanics of Destiny are amazing, and what keeps people playing and coming back to the game, with the best first person shooting in a game, in a very long time. However, the content itself gets very stale after repeated attempts to get the gear that you want, as the RNG system is not very forgiving, and having your actual levels based on this is horrible.

The story in Destiny has always been a topic of discussion because, there really is not one, and even recent attempts have improved it, but never brought it to the level that it needed. The real stories came from the players themselves, whether it be from accomplishments, or frustration, the community banded together and pushed the game forward, trying to make the most of it.

Was Destiny a success? Financially, of course, but as a game, it is debatable. There were great moments, and very bad ones, and overall it was more the people that made the game rather than the game. Destiny deserves a 7 if not lower, but the only thing holding it up is the mechanics. We all hope that the next Destiny will be full of more substantial content, but only time will tell.

I had to play this game a lot to get a conclusion: how much I enjoyed it? Well, the game offers a lot of fun, but the story isn't good. Destiny can be repetitive, but there are always something to do, the game never ends.

If you like brainless inter-spacial shooting, this game is perfect, but, if you are looking for immersion, it's not for you. I don't regret at all buying it and all

Regarding the post story mode content, that is where the game really performs and I think this was their main focus when creating this game, because the story is so vague that you need to view these "grimoirs" on a separate site to read more into the lore. When I first bought Destiny it was shortly after the first DLC, "The Dark Below". I knew the game had flaws, but the visuals were, and still are great. The shooting mechanics are also really well thought out and because it's a slot machine style game with so many things to collect, upgrade and be rewarded, I kept playing it for for such a long time. However, the novalty soon wore off and I stopped playing it all together until the most recent DLC, The Taken King, game out (but again, I stopped playing after about a week). So far there has been 3 DLCs with the 3rd being the first DLC to add significant content to this game, including a new campaign. What Destiny is now is what it should've been back when it first came out in 2014. What is most disappointing is that this game now costs less than £40 brand new in GAME including all the expansions, when the base game alone cost more than this when I first purchased it. Only now is Destiny a complete game and that's why I'm giving it a 6/10. If you enjoy hours upon hours of grinding, micro transactions for emotes and repeating the same quests over and over, than this is the game for you. Expand

PvE does have a lot going for it but only after you've made it through the almost non-existent story and obtained enough gear to get you up to 34 (the level cap after expansion II) there is a lot of variety of activities to try but you will need 2-5 other friends to play with you, the game relys on friends playing the game which can be a problem at times. Items can be SO hard to obtain often as its all luck, not skill, but the sense of achievement when you finally get them is great. The active community is often highly friendly but the game is rage inducing at times and sometimes end game activities can take up to 3 hours. DLC is stingy priced unfortunately, but if you have friends playing Destiny I recommend it, if not its probably not the best. Expand

After awhile the game began to become VERY repetitive with the same stale mechanics. Shoot this guy, shoot that guy, go here, shoot that specific guy for a minute or so... The boss battles were stale and didn't require you to strategize and exploit a weakness, it's quite literally just shoot at the head or torso area for the entire encounter. It got boring, very quickly. It felt as if I was playing another Call of Duty story mission, nothing new, nothing good. I expected everything and the only motive for playing was to acquire a specific rare item which I found to be VERY frustrating! The leveling system is crap, even after patches I still find it tedious to upgrade weapons and armor especially the most important weapons and armor. (ie. pre-HoW patch exotic weapons and gear) Furthermore, all gains regarding weapons and armor inevitably get nullified through future DLC's. Only a select few exotics are able to be carried through the cycle of the game. Whereas I can understand why legendary weapons get held back, I find it unnecessary for armor pieces to have no way of ascending. (post-TTK release) Finally, some weapons receive unnecessary nerfs or damage reductions such as the Auto Rifles (pre-TTK) and fusion rifles (post-DB yes they are still meh-ish). To summarize, if you are bored and want a new experience, destiny is NOT that game, at first it feels fun and refreshing but after awhile the game will is piss you off. Lastly, it is also worth mentioning they have an entertaining Multiplayer, player vs player mode. If you enjoy and are GOOD at PvP or Multiplayer then the game will buy you an extra few hours of enjoyment, however some of the weapons that dominate PvP are acquired through very lengthy grind sessions of story mode or campaign, and sometimes you may very well never get that sought after weapon because 99% of the game revolves around RNG. (items are completely randomly selected regardless of game performance and what level you are) Destiny is a love/hate experience, again, I do not recommend this game, Destiny is a carrot on the stick game and should be avoided. Cons- Poor customization, lack of gun models, repetitive game play (both missions and strikes are very repetitive with little variation), very short main story line, very little lore/backstory/explanation for why anything has happened or is happening (at the end of the main story line I still have next to no idea what or who the main antagonist of the game is supposed to be, why the enemy factions are here, who several characters were, what happened to different locations before my arrival, etc.), jump ships literally appear only in cut scenes and loading screens, the high pricing of DLC that was likely content that was cut from the original game.

While there are a few good things about Destiny that make it very playable such as the great combat mechanics, aesthetics and soundtrack, the game falls flat because of it's tiny storyline that will last you a few hours, the repetitive nature of missions that revolve around the "go here, kill those, scan this, kill the boss/waves of enemies" formula for literally every mission, and a complete lack of coherent story telling. Shortly after the beginning of the game, an NPC literally says that he could explain significant events or useful story the player, but decides not to. There's just been no effort to help the player understand the world we're in which totally kills any immersion, constantly reminding the player that they're playing a game. A lot of pre release footage would indicate that the world used to be a lot more open but significant changes (likely due to Activision holding up the contract) occurred before release that make it seem like the game was heavily re designed a few months before release.

It make me think that somebody hired a fantastic development team to built a beautiful world, but then assigned a creative director that just wrote a first draft filled with ideas that sound cool, but then never improved on them, leaving a game that looks great on the outside but is filled with plot holes and half thought out ideas.

It seems that you can play the entire base game from a freely available demo which will save your character for if you ever buy the retail version, so if you want to play Destiny, just download the demo because you can get everything you want out of it for free and without having to pay for any overpriced DLC packs.

The game had lots of pre-orders and a lot of hype, even more than games like WATCH_DOGS and the PC port of Grand Theft Auto V. However, Destiny is not only the most disappointing game of 2014, but maybe even the most disappointing game of the decade. There is so much things you can't do in Destiny that should of been there. For example, why can't I trade items? Why is the RNG so bad and extremely Unfair? Why are there so many One Shot Kill weapons in PvP? This makes we wonder if they were actually using all of it for this or if they decided to use more than half of it for another game? I don't want to buy a $50 membership just to play in the Crucible, nobody does! There is a lot of different weapons and abilities to use that are supposed to make the game more deep and interesting.

There is a lot of different weapons and abilities to use that are supposed to make the game more deep and interesting.

Now the problem: Destiny doesn't have a finished story. The two DLC that cost 30€ brought some useless info into the game, but didn't add to the actual story. And since the story is lacking, you'd want to play some Crucible (PVP) to spend your time. The matchmaking system is complete crap. You don't really see it in 6 vs 6 battles, but when you're put together with two **** players for hours without your actual K/D affecting it, it tends to make a guy mad.

That's not all. Bungie made a lot of changes to PVP by nerfing Auto Rifles, just because they were used so much and they decided them to be so OP that people didn't like other guns. That ended up making PVP into a game type with only 3-5 different primary weapons used and 2-3 secondary. If you try crucible, you'll propably be killed by these: Thorn, The Last Word, Hawkmoon (all handcannons), or Party Crasher +1, Felwinter's Lie and Matador 64 (All shotguns).

Bungies idea to nerf AR's to make other guns popular made it so that only these weapons are used and you'd rarely see some others like Red Death and the messenger.

This has been going since February and they haven't done anything to rebalance the weapon system.
I truly enjoyd Crucible prior to the nerf as you could actually see amazing weapons, but now that crap.

Due to the current status of Destiny, I've decided not to buy the Taken King DLC and propably not any other either.

On the other hand, the gun-play was epic. You can see the structure of the gameplay is ultimately Halo with a different skin which is just awesome!
Starter levelling up was great, completing bounties and unlocking a new upgrade was amazing- Every time you unlocked an upgrade you felt proud. Unfortunately, after reaching level 20, it became a bit repetitive.
Among lots of stupid stuff Bungie has included, two stand out: light level and engrams. Light level was just boring but whose idea was it to get items which wasn't for your class from legendary and exotic engrams!? Also, if I worked hard enough to get a legendary engram, I deserve a legendary item, not a uncommon piece of gear!
The online was nothing new but with gunplay it was awesome.
I wish Bungie would make a Destiny remake this time resembling the original story ( Bungie's writer for Destiny, Joe Staten, left before the game was made) . The campain now in Destiny is a total joke. Bear in mind this is the creative people who developed Halo. Gosh this game affected Bungie's reputation. They've took out key parts of the story that are probably going to appear in future DLC. What!? I payed £40 for a game, not for part of a game. So much potential wasted...
The graphics were nothing to be excited about. In some places the textures looked horrible.
Last and definitely least, the Random Number Generator. This is by far the unfair and unorganised system EVER! Your rewards aren't based o skill, there based on luck. WHAT!? How dare they... For example if I came first in a game of control with 30 kills and a K/D ratio of 9.70 can get nothing and the player who slayed one Guardian can get a legendary rocket launcher!
    Bungie, get your act together.

The final verdict is a 6/10. It would be a 3/10 if the gunplay wasn't so good!
    Peace out. (:

This is an update of my earlier glowing review. I still disagree with the initial round of bad reviews from major publications. They had the right scores for the wrong reasons.

For the single player "Destiny" is fun but not engaging. There are plenty of missions and on-line activities and shooting aliens is fun as it was in "Halo". There are no memorable moments from any of the missions. You escort Dinklebot to a waypoint, Dinklebot screws up, and you have to defend Dinkeblot from waves of attackers. The whole story makes no sense. Nevertheless, the first play-through is fun enough that most players will enjoy this portion of the game.

Bungie says the real meat of "Destiny" is the co-operative on-line content consisting of strikes, the raid which is now 2 raids after December, and also an arena mode added in May. In actuality, the real meat of "Destiny" is the meta-game of collecting in-game items to reach the highest level. This meta-game is severely hampered by a lack of fun and a lack of rewards. Most of the in-game items are dropped randomly, meaning that some players will never receive the gear deserve no matter how long they play. The best in-game items, the raid legendaries, are all dropped randomly. For each weapon or piece of armor, you need to grind for experience to unlock all abilities as if you are working a job and not playing a game for enjoyment. Worse, you quickly discover that most of the activities in "Destiny" provide subpar rewards at best, and there is an inverse correlation between the quality of the rewards and the amount of fun you have playing an activity.

Then there are the bugs. More than 9 months after release, the game is riddled with bugs. The connection to Bungie's servers is always flaky. Enemies and opposing players will freeze and take no damage. Then they may flit around the map with super speed. The two raids are especially frustrating because a litany of bugs can turn a 15 minute boss fight into hours of frustration topped off by sub-par rewards. Competitive multi-player is worse off because "Destiny" uses one player's console to host the game instead of running the game off of dedicated servers. Cheating through lag manipulation is as rampant as the lag itself.

Like many players, I have put hundreds of hours into "Destiny". They weren't all good hours. For ever fun moment there are many more filled with frustration over the bugs, heart break over the poor rewards, and mindless grinding all in the hope that one day "Destiny" will be as fun as advertised. If I could go back in time I would tell myself to buy another game. Of course I have made a good friends through "Destiny", and I enjoy playing "Destiny" with them. I wish we could all play another game instead. If you are looking into joining "Destiny", I advise you don't. If you picked up a used copy of "Destiny" for cheap, enjoy the single player experience and move on.

I have played the game since release on PS4 and have thus far purchased all DLC for this game. Let me first start with the positive aspects of this game.
When it comes to game play destiny is one of the best. The shooting, the NPC's, and the game play itself is amazing. I don't feel like there is major bugs (anymore), and the small open worlds are easy to navigate, and full of things to do. The NPC's are still challenging even when you max at your level, and they have enough AI to make it fun to shoot them.
Another good aspect of this game is PVP. It is fun, and even lower level players can enter the arena and do fairly decent. The only complaint I have for this is that it seems gear almost has no meaning when fighting other players. I was one hit killed by a level 2 player the other day, and with the equipment I possess this should be impossible, but I understand Bungie has to even things out, and this is a minor issue, so I will not put it as a complete negative.
Now on the bad side of things...and there is a lot. First, there is practically no story line to this game, and the small tidbits you get make no sense. It is almost as if an entirely different game was made, and then someone went in there and cut it all up; keeping only certain pieces of the original. Now I have read and watched several reviews, and they all seem to state the Destiny we now see, is not the Destiny originally planned, and the lack of story line spawns from a need for the company to make money from DLC. Which is of course shameful if true.
Second, the game is horribly repetitive. Even as the DLC's came out it was the same reputation missions as before. Plus there was no extra story give with the DLC's. I am not even sure what the point of Dark Below was. It didn't educate me on the Hive, nor did it do anything to make me further understand why I was fighting them...or what their purpose of fighting me was for that matter. Really it just seemed like I was fighting for loot and that was it. House of Wolves seem to continue this trend, by making a few missions without explaining why you are doing them, or why the fallen are even a threat. What was the point of cutting up the game for DLC if you weren't going to further explain aspects of the game? Was it only about loot?
Third, the drops by NPC's are laughable. I have spent countless hours on this game to get somewhat decent equipment, however none of it came from NPC drops. All of it came from either Xur, exoctic bounties, PVP, or Nightfall end of mission rewards. I have never once; in my countless hours of playing, received a legendary drop from a NPC. This is also true of the people I play the game with. Why even have loot drop if nothing good ever comes out of it?
It seems to me (and for many), that this game could have been one of the greats, but corporate greed destroyed what might have been one of my all time favorite games. I hope this changes in the future, or I will never buy or play another Destiny sequel or DLC.

There is no doubt in my mind that this game is addictive but to be honest the only reason I kept playing was because there was nothing else at the time of its release and all my friends were playing this. Mechanically, this game is one of the best first person shooters ive ever played and the visual/sound design were magnificent. But even the mechanics get dull when enemies feel exactly the same and main bosses require no strategy other than shooting it in the face a million times. Even the most beautiful scenery gets boring when i'm dropped into the exact same area and run through the exact same buildings to do the exact same mission. The initial 3-4 hours with this game are great but when you tear away at the layers you realise just how hollow it truly is. Taking a new character to the max level does add some re-playability to the game but the guns are still the same and eventually you realise the characters are just cosmetically different and their abilities are slight alterations of each other (seriously a warlock's nova bomb is essentially the same area of effect damage as a titan's fist of havoc). PvP is this games only redeeming factor but even that feels empty when compared to other games such as HALO, COD or battlefield which have better progression, more interesting maps and better game modes. The social aspect of this game isnt great because at any given time you are only part of a 3 or 6 man team plus poor or non-existent matchmaking completely ruins most of its limited content. It should never be considered as a MMO, not even close.

I really did want this game to be something special, and that is why it is such a disapointment, it was made by developers who created one of my all time favourite games but practices by them and the publishers have completely put me off any future developments. There are so many other games out now that give you so much more content for a fraction of the price of this game and all of its DLC. Opening the case for the first time and you're greeted with a card that tells you to buy the season pass for the next two expansions before you even touch the disc! This bring me back to the point its the 'most expensive game ever made', I cant help but feel that the majority of that money went on advertising and false promises instead of actually developing the game. Fair play to the advertising department they earned their paychecks with amount of hype they generated with their trailers. My advice is to never believe in the hype for a game and to wait for the 'game of the year' edition where you can buy the entire game and its DLC for the original price as its release day. Even then this game would be considered painfully average at best.

Have you ever played a game that kept you in the mood to keep going, and to continue the game until you got bored of it? Well this is what describes Destiny.

    Basics:
Destiny is a first person shooter developed by Bungie and published by Activision. The point of the game is to level up your character, making you stronger the more you play, you fight monsters in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere. You have a "Ghost" companion helping you out (voiced by Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage), who tells you the story on how the alien race you face in the game has taken over the universe, and that's where it goes in terms of story telling. The game seems to throw you in without giving you enough information on what you need to know about this alien race you are facing.

    Gameplay:
At the very start you have the option to choose whatever race you want to play, there is an option what gender you would like to be. You can spoof up your character by adding some color and miscellaneous items. After creating your hero you are awoken by your new companion robot, you are immediately asked to go find a weapon and a ship to go to the main town of the game.
Once arriving at the main town of the game you are asked to explore more of the once populated Earth, the missions given are different, they all take place in the same land, but different. There are the main story missions which you can do to explore some of the later planets farther in the game, and there are side missions. Side missions can be found by selecting "Patrol Mission" on the map screen, you earn awards and level up the more you do. The down side to the patrol missions is most of them are the same type of mission like, "Go kill these guys" or "Kill this boss" or "Find a specific object", and sense this game involves around real life time, these missions will repeat the next day, it just gets old after a while.
There are missions offered in the main town, you can do bounties for extra loot and level up faster, which is the fastest way to leveling up. The bounties are all different, but you will very likely get some of the same ones you had from the previous day, this is another repetitive feature to the game. You can buy more equipment by spending the currency that is dropped by the species you face.

    Multiplayer:
This is a big factor in the game, other players will be exploring just like you are. You can team up with other players in the over world, there is also a PvP option, but that requires Playstation Plus if you have Plasystation, or Microsoft Gold if you have Xbox. The PvP option (called "The Crucible") has different modes like capture the flag, deathmatch, capture the point, etc. You start off waiting to find players to play with, it can take a while, but you will eventually get into the game. Depending on whatever game mode you picked you will have to do the objective to win the game.
The gameplay itself is overall fun, but again, it just gets old after awhile. Depending on what level you are when you start, you will always play against players that have a higher level than you. The game encourages you to keep playing by giving you crucible marks and other loot after each match. The loot you obtain can range from a low level to a legendary level (being the highest rated level), you can also spend some of the crucible marks you are awarded at the crucible shop at the main town.
Overall the multiplayer mode is just another way to convince players to continue playing the game, it is not a bad idea, but the fact you need membership is just the downside to this feature.
There are also strikes, strikes are side missions you can do to level up your character. Strikes can only be played with 3 players, any players less the harder the strike will be. You fight your way through with the random players you are assigned to work with, each strike has an objective, the objective you are given will depend on how hard it is. At the end of each strike you will obtain loot and experience to level up your character.

    Final Opinion:
Overall Destiny is fun and visually stunning, but the game gets boring after reaching level 20, which is the maximum you can go, you can obtain equipment to go beyond that level. I would say the only reason to keep playing is if you are addicted to the multiplayer if you have no other FPS Multiplayer game you have. Destiny tries so hard by adding new things to the game, but it just does not work, sure the expansions sound cool, it just is not enough to keep players entertained. Destiny's gameplay is like Borderlands, just remove the open world aspect and you have something that is less entertaining. I only recommend Destiny if you are looking for something to have fun for a while or have friends that play this game, otherwise skip, there is really no reason to buy a game that is only good for the first 2 weeks of gameplay.

September 2014, my dreams came true... sort of.

    -Story-

There isn't. From what I recall, you are this city's only hope from evil forces coming in blah blah blah. I couldn't tell what was going on as I was too busy interested shooting some poor aliens skull in. The addition of the grimore cards to try and expand the plot elements don't really make a difference to the story whatsoever.

    -Gameplay-

The gunplay in the game is very good and the option to upgrade it is nice as well. The addition of bounties and strikes add difficulty to the game. Only problem is that they are all the same really. Typically its go out, shoot some aliens, go and wait for that robot to work his magic whilst you shoot some more, shoot boss, done. That will be the same for most of the bounties (some bounties you have to collect something). Raids I have played and its one of the highlights of the game, as you need team communication to complete it.

    -Multiplayer-

Plays a bit like COD but more floaty and less dying at spawn. If you have high ranking guns and a fusion rifle, then you're set for the game.

    -DLC-

Now, I haven't got any of the DLC's for Destiny as it's around £20 for one, which is the price of a second hand game. For a few maps, weapons raid and a strike, that is a bit too much (yes, I know, the DLC's for COD mostly had 4 maps plus a goodie, but they were £11).

Overall, I can't really see myself playing Destiny that much due to the repetitive nature of it. Endgame is the same as story, grind and repeat, grind and repeat.

    Borderlands, anyone?

Hyping a game too much is a risky move, and Destiny shows you why. In this review of Destiny I will give my opinions and ratings on the following: Gameplay, Story, Sound, Graphics, and Last Impressions. This will be followed by my final score for the game.

    Gameplay: 8.5/10
    - Destiny is a lot of things, and an excellent shooter is one of them. Bungie knows how to make a shooter and they prove this yet again with Destiny. Controls are responsive, shooting is accurate and fun, and coordinating your attacks with friends/teammates can make the game feel quite tactical.

    Story: 4/10
    - Destiny falls flat on it's face with the poor story telling. It might not even be poor story telling as much as a lack of story telling. The game has very few cutscenes (a total of maybe 5), and they mostly just confused me on my first playthrough. The game attempts to do some story telling through your quest descriptions and bounties, but this mostly feels like "Kill this guy, then we'll scan the environment" over and over again. The game also ends out of no where, but that seems fitting I guess, since the story was a mess from the start.

    Sound: 7/10
    - Nothing special to talk about here. Voice acting is few and far between, but is delivered well enough on those rare occasions someone has something to say. Combat sounds good, and monsters shriek as you'd expect them to. Music is great at times, "pumping" you up for battle, and at other times it's just annoying and overly loud.

    Graphics: 8.5/10
    - The graphics in this game are very good. The different areas you visit are few, but each has it's own look to it and at first they are really incredible. The big problem here is the lack of areas. There are 4 planets, which all look incredible the first few times around, but after you've seen everything a few times, it's all old and dry. Character models and guns look good, as you'd expect from Bungie.

    Last Impressions
    - The biggest problem with destiny is the lack of content. People expecting to get a diverse and expansive experience will be disappointing with Destiny. The game is over before you know it, and then becomes a grind to gain better gear and levels. This can be fun with friends, no doubt, but the lack of content in a game that was supposed to be "enormous" is very disappointing. Destiny is an average game at best, but play with the right people and you can have a decent time playing pretty much anything.

    Final Score: 7/10

THE LOVE: Gorgeous graphics, a great ability tier that allows you to change your character to a different sub class as you progress and a decent stock of weapons that gain XP as you use them allowing you to unlock their varying features which are mostly unique to each weapon. I felt the controls were smooth and with the evolving ability system which increases your jump range, ability to glide and even teleport, the only limitations I found as far as movement were my own periodic inability to execute them. The story is decent but the overall experience feels like Halo clone more than a wholly unique experience. This is apparent in the first few seconds of the game when the Dinklage 2.0 appears and you get instant flashbacks to Guilty Spark. It’s a workable way to narrate through a story but I felt more drawn into Halo’s experience having Cortana’s voice whispering in my ear, full humour, emotion and depth as opposed to the monotone sound of Peter Dinklage’s voice. His voice acting is great and this is how the character was meant to be portrayed. But developers should take note that if a gamer will be forced to interact with a character throughout the entire experience, a little bit of depth and emotion goes a long way to make your companion a bit more palatable.
Now, The Hate: The hype for Destiny spanned back years. We knew it was coming, then delayed but we didn’t care because it just meant they needed more time to make it great. We read how this game was Bungie’s passion project and how it had been in the works for over a decade. An entire universe, ever expanding and evolving which would allow you to go anywhere you want. It was laid out as a game that seemed like it had the potential to never end. Never has something been so far from my expectations as I was stopped in my tracks after only a few months of intermittent game play with nothing left to do. I breezed through the levels and all the while hoped that maybe when I finished the current planet a new one would unlock, but it doesn’t. With only Earth, The Moon and Venus to explore at initially, and then much later on Mars, which are all pseudo open-world and quite small map wise when Bungie’s promises had us expecting something much more expansive is a major let down. At minimum I would expect to be able to explore our Solar System, but this is just a pipe dream. The addition of Mars took so long after I had finished the other 3 planets that I actually had to relearn the controls and try to remember what was happening in the story when I left it months earlier. Now, after completing Mars this game is collecting dust and I’m not sure I’ll care to wait for the next planet given how long it’s been, Destiny at this point is a distant memory. There’s a saying I have “Don’t just talk the talk…be the talk” and Bungie should take note of this. The lack of transparency with the lack of any offline function made me feel cheated as well. I read anything I could get my hand on related to Destiny before its release, never did I read “oh…and there’s no Offline play”. For many this probably won’t matter, but that’s because they live in a world where internet is integrated into their everyday life. I assure you this is not the case with many people. In my case I travel 6 months out of the year for work and take my games on the road with my Gaems Case. I remember the frustration I felt when I bought the game (the ultimate addition which was well over a $100) left for work and that evening put it in only to read “no network connection”. I get that this is supposed to be an MMO type experience, but to not even add a hoard mode like Halo had seems short-sighted. Unless you have internet this game is useless. Lastly, my biggest gripe is the inability to access 100% of the game as many areas require a Fire Team. The Vault of Glass for example. I’m a mostly solo gamer and up for a challenging grind. However you can’t even access the Vault without multiple players controlling these “plates”. The one time I did get in alone due to a glitch that has since been patched, I fought for hours alone and finally made it to the boss, after an epic battle and getting him down to 25% of his health, the network booted me out and I lost my progress. Restarted outside the vault and couldn’t get back in. If you don’t have friends on PSN who want to play the Raids you’re stuck trying to find strangers to help, and no one seems to want to play so while the game quickly leaves you with no storyline to continue until they update with the next planet (if ever) the inability to access parts of the game you haven’t played is a ridiculous tease that just makes me want my money back.

If Bungie can turn itself around and "Be the talk" I'd be happy to revisit this review.

The music, the architecture, graphics and the GAMEPLAY! Yeah, this is a gameplay for a shooter! + great RPG elements. The things that dissapointed me: 1. THE STORY - I wanted more, more story and more storytelling :( 2. The lack of more content (I didnt brought the DLC cus Im not paying 35 euros for that lack of content DLCs). 3. Its addictive, yes, the game is addictive for some time. If you like MMOs this is good for you, but if you like more single player games, ok, you may try, but possibly youll be dissapointed. But for me, its a 7/10 game (above above average). If there is a SALE on DLC, I maybe come back to DESTINY, but definetly not now Expand

The story is kinda dull, and introduces new characters in the plot just to serve as DLC packs that would be released at a different time. The final boss is literally the same boss three times, and on top of that, a boss that was encountered earlier in the game. Item drops are completely random and serve no purpose. The cryptarch will decipher a legendary drop into an uncommon or rare drop, which makes absolutely no sense. One redeeming quality of the game is the PvP, which I felt was the best part of the game. It reminded me of all the fun that I used to have when I played the Halo games on the 360. But then again, I didn't pay $60 for a PvP experience. Raids are just a disappointment. Bosses are exactly the same from the campaign missions, and just becomes boring when you literally have to shoot at him for like an half an hour. It's not difficult, it's just boring as hell. Destiny was a game that I felt could have been the first big MMO for consoles, kinda like a WoW for PS4/XB1, but they dropped the ball and no one I know even touches this game anymore. I'd rent it first before paying the full price for this game. Expand

Destiny is one word, disappointing. The story- disappointing. The campaign- hoard mode simulator. Grinding- takes forever to get a single new weapon and the weapon you get does not even depend on the enemy itself.. But, the graphics, music, and the combat is great. But the classes are not diverse, the skill tree doesn't feel diverse, so overall, this game is a let down.

What detracts from the experience is, unfortunately, the core experience. The in-game storytelling is woefully inadequate, and leaves you just not caring about any of the characters or locations. The motivations of the different races is never flushed out, and you end up just running around shooting everything in sight and farting around looking for new skins. That's this game in a nut-shell. Yes Bungie tries to supplement and complete the gaping holes in the story with the online content, but frankly it is a distraction. You must leave the game to figure out what anything is. After a while this game become a dust collector. Once you level up each of the different classes all the way, through an ungodly amount of grinding and replaying mission, it has little to no purpose. This game become hollow and empty rather quickly; after about the first character class play through.

As I said before though, it's not a bad game! The gunplay and leveling up the different weapons and armors is a lot of fun! Playing with two of your other friends in a fire team is immensely satisfying! The other positive is that Bungie has A TON of DLC and additional content coming! A 10 year plan worth of goodies. That is a definite win.

Speaking of the DLC, it needs to improve a little. A lot of love and thought went into cool weapons and clothing options for the Dark below, but my god the additional missions were a joke. They were short, unfulfilling, and could be completed in less than an hour. Step up Bungie/Activision.

In short, a fun twitch shooter with lots of loot to collect, but lacks any real substance to keep you playing solo. Not a bad buy, just temper your expectations and have dedicated friends to play with. Wait until the price drops to around 20-30 dollars, and then get the DLC, you will feel like you got exactly what you paid for.

This game had huge potential to be amazing, but between the obvious piece by piece business model, lack of engaging story or characters, lack interesting game play (excluding pvp) and lack good level design (again, excluding pvp), Destiny is a mess that i don't plan to pay to have cleaned up.

For the good, I will say the soundtrack outshines that game play. It makes the boss battles feel somewhat epic. That is saying something since the actual game play usually is anything but. This is not to say they were bad, just predictable and repetitive. Other highlights are that the visuals are beautiful and the planets are well detailed, despite how linear they are. And finally the variety of weapons and armor adds an exiting layer to the shooter PVP aspect. On that note, PVP is fun, if an only if you work to get the gear to actually stand a chance.

For the bad, the story is atrocious. There is little back story, little explanation to any character's relevance, and little cohesive structure. Ideas are mentioned and dropped and focus seems to shift abruptly. The worlds amount to a circle with the individual segments being linear. All of the objectives in the story are the same: fight off X race while your ghost does Y task or fight X boss while it throws minions at you. The leveling of the gear is tedious and any leveling for the crucible, vanguard or any faction is tedious as well.

A special note needs to be said about the business model. Supposedly there is a 10 year contract between Activision and Bungie. One must question how much of the game was intentionally left out to be strung along versus how much upcoming DLC will be legitimately new (I am under the impression much of The Dark Below was withheld content.) In either case, Destiny is a fundamentally flawed empty shell on launch and any business model that strives to fill in the gaps of the original product with future products is not one I can condone. I do realize Destiny is the highest budgeted game ever; but that does make it right for Activision to adopt that model. Yes, games are expensive to develop and I fully understand DLC is needed for publishers to recoup the money; but by going this model, integrity is lost and hurts more than helps. If a game is legitimately good, people will buy it, DLC and all. If a game is marginal, you get shady forms of DLC and game editions. The problem is people will still buy it, enabling this practice. Destiny could have been phenomenal with some tweaks of the fundamental game play. I don't think this is anything any amount of DLC can rectify though. I for one don't plan to pay to find out.

This game is mediocre, nothing more, nothing less. The story goes in the famously bad area with Sharknado and Twilight. Gameplay is by far the best part of the game and earns 4 out of the 5 points I'm giving it. Graphics are pretty good, but nothing special. Bosses are a prime example of bullet sponges. Biggest dissapointment of 2014.

Unfortunately all of the games missions occur on the same handful of mid-sized maps; the variety of terrain and areas to visit is paltry compared to its competition.

You learn very little about the opposition, your allies, the motivation, the hows/whys/history of the universe; the story is virtually nonexistant in this manner, giving you the feeling of an unfinished world. Some of the enemies look interesting, and some even have unique behaviors in combat and at different levels of injury; this is one of the few redeeming traits of the game.

Level progression is very simplistic and basic, with virtually all characters of the same class differing only in appearance; and as appearance is equipment base, that in itself isn't a player choice.

Equipment is very clearly better/worse, with stated damage/second values or armor ratings; you very rarely have a choice between two equivalent items. Weapon selection is sparse as well; you have a few basic categories of primary weapons, secondary weapons, and two types of heavy weapons, all but two of which simply amount to 'spitting out bullets either on automatic or semi-automatic'.

Overall, a strictly average game with pretty visuals but little else to redeem it.

The integration of both an FPS and MMO styled game really started to peak my interest. The story was lacking substance and consistency through the entirety of the game, leaving me completely disappointed in the end. The raid system was fun for the most part, but there are constant bugs and glitches that keep ruining the efforts of a 6 or less person team that these people put time into beating. Many instances of these glitches were in The Dark Below expansion, where teams could "cheese" the end boss for easy gear. When they introduced the Hard mode of this expansion, the problems would consist, or be completely different. Enemies would not spawn, the boss would take no damage, fall off the map, randomly glitch into the safe areas, and ruin a team's raid.

The pvp system in the game is alright, consisting of the 3 different classes on a team clashing in different game modes. I find that the "supers" are unbalanced, leaving the hunter class with the edge overall. One shot kills pertain to the Golden Gun ability, leaving anyone caught in the fire dead, or the Arc-blade ability gives them close to invincibility with an over shield, one hit kill melee, and rapid movement (even in the air).

Overall, you can only progress so much through this game until there is nothing left for you to do. Exotics weapons only take so long after you play for a month, and then you have most of them obtained. The new level cap of 32 leaves public events, daily events, and sometimes even weekly events useless, considering you get materials you can no longer use with the new raid gear.

I agree with many users that this game is one that is forced to be played as Bungie wants you to, and after you do that much; the game is essentially pointless to continue playing. I appreciate what Bungie is attempting to do, and I feel that a 6 is pretty generous considering the lack of story, continuation of activities for maxed character, and balanced classes.

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
