Just reached level 20 and finished the campaign the evening.
The 0's were right. This game is awful and the positive critics reviews and marketing are where the $500 Million went.
Absolute rubbish and NOT a MMO at all. Even the positive reviews make excuses - not a good sign.
Rent, don't buy, if you're curious.

Beautiful, but hollow. Like a christmas present with great looking wrapping, but just a bag of marbles inside. Bungies plan is to make this game last 10 years, but who the hell is going to repeatedly grind these very repetitive missions for even a few months? Not many.

After playing about 48 hours I've come to the conclusion this game was unfinished and overhyped to the extreme. The multiplayer is unbalanced, dull, full of COD-tactic players (run and shoot even on Control) and shouldn't even be allowed in this kind of game.
The story was written very poorly, but the COOP aspect is definitely the only good side to this mediocre broken mess.

Makes for a very average action game minus the load times and other players you cant talk to or interact with, hell you cant even do anything multiplayer without forking out extra for playstation plus .

Its nothing but a great big very pretty world with sweet f all to do in it, one that you have to spend 3/4 of your time loading just to display other characters that steal your kills and cannot be interacted with. Boring assed storyline and the entire game boils down to run from point A to point B, rinse and repeat.

This game is incredibly average. The story is basically Halo 1, but less fun because what little voice acting there is feels wooden and you never do anything that makes you feel remotely cool like escaping an exploding space ship in a car (admit it, when you were young and did that the first time you felt like a bad ass).

This game is incredibly average. The story is basically Halo 1, but less fun because what little voice acting there is feels wooden and you never do anything that makes you feel remotely cool like escaping an exploding space ship in a car (admit it, when you were young and did that the first time you felt like a bad ass).
Every mission is literally exactly the same, land on a planet, fight to a secluded area, have your Ghost activate something then fight off waves of enemies, then after the waves a boss either spawns, or you head a little further in and fight a boss. That is it... every single mission in the storyline is exactly that, and the boss fights aren't even fun because there are no mechanics to it, you essentially hide behind something when they attack and then step out to fire.
Then you have the side mission of which there are only 4 variations, you either have to kill a bunch of enemies, kill a specific enemy, go somewhere and scan something, or kill a bunch of enemies and gather a certain item which is essentially the same as just killing a bunch of enemies.
The weapon and loot system is basically the same as borderlands except with at best a 10th of the variety. There are 9 weapon types, many of which are very similar, and within those types there is absolutely no variation.
Now you would think the online play would be redeeming, after all a game is much more fun with more people. Except the people you see playing have virtually no way to contact you or speak to you. There is no point in teaming up to do a mission since they are so incredibly easy, even "hard" mode isn't that much of a challenge.
The only online feature I enjoyed was the "strike" or dungeon system which was kind of fun because some bosses were vaguely difficult, but they did follow the same lack of mechanics as other bosses.

Pvp is not half as enjoyable as the mega-fans would have you believe. I think it would be better if there were more of it in the open world, but instead you get put into a limited arena. Once there you will notice how horribly unbalanced combat is. Since a titan has more survivability and there is virtually no difference in damage between the classes since everyone uses the same pool of weapons you either play as titan or die. Hunters can occasionally do well, but thats mostly because of the grenade that homes in when enemies get close and the ridiculously overpowered throwing knife which no other class has anything remotely comparable. Also forget about getting any kills without a sniper rifle, but thats pretty similar to many online shooters.
The world looks kind of pretty, but the graphics look more like mid last gen than early current gen. So the area you actually play in can look pretty dull, but the backdrop is beautiful.
The vehicle system is weak at its best moments, and I feel pretty ripped off with that crappy sparrow from pre-ordering.
Honestly it isn't too awful, the gameplay is moderately fun, but it is nothing new and personally i believe Halo did it better. It helps that I have a couple friends with the game and we play online on occasion.

I promise I am not just someone who is pissed that the game did not live up to the hype, but they definitely made some big promises on the originality and vast content and we have seen none of that. It isn't even like I haven't given the game a decent try, believe me when I say that I really, reeeeaaallllyyy, wanted to love this game. I played a Warlock all the way to 20 and have about 5 levels into a titan, I might work on a hunter to see if it is any better, but I wouldn't bet on it.

As for my particular score, I personally believe it should have a 6 or 7, but somebody has to counter the massive influx of undeserved perfect scores when at the very best this game might get an 8, and only if you had incredibly low expectations and very little experience with shooters.

Update: In a continued attempt to enjoy this game I played more. I had previously hit level 20, but other than a Mars Strike I didn't do much playing after level 20, so I decided to try some vanguard strikes and some other stuff. That is why I lowered the score which was previously a 5/10. All the people saying the game really opens up after level 20 either haven't hit level 20 or are total idiots. What happens is you get access to vanguard strikes which are essentially the same strikes you have been doing but with higher level enemies... that is it, no new content, the loot is awful (I did the level 20 strike and got a level 16 piece of gear), and in general the game actually got worse.

Now many people are saying that the game is going to get so much better with dlc and all of this other junk. I for one did not pay full price for less than half of a game, and I resent being required to pay $35 for what is bound to be another small portion of said game.

If it were possible to get my money back from Bungie I would.

Destiny, for it's size and amount of resources put into it, sucks. The story is so bad it reminds me of the star wars prequels. Within the first two missions of the "story" they used the excuse "go check this out" so lame. The console may not just provide the interface for a MMO those game maybe regulated to PC. Destiny sucks as a MMO, not enough levels, not enough scale, scope, not enough to explore just not enough. Destiny also sucks as a FPS, the controls feel sloppy, the guns are blamed and not easy to understand. Why not show me a delta between impact of what I have equip vs the gun I am evaluating? Compared to it's closest cousin, borderlands, the FPS side of this game is slightly better. It feels like Bungie is stuck in the time when they started developing this game, 2005. Back then a good FPS like the old COD's and Halo's worked. These days Battlefield is a game changer in the FPS world. While Destiny is ahead of the POS Titanfall, it falls behind COD and isn't in the discussion with Battlefield. More bad stuff. The armor, you know what was cool about customizing the armor in the Halo series? Master chief was SO iconic that it was acually interesting to see some customization of it. But sense this series doesn't bother making any kind of iconic character or any kind of connection to it and in addition the build up of the armor is SO fast you basically instantly have cool armor. What about some build up? What about started with very basic looking armor and gradually getting cooler? What about being able to CLEARLY tell who is what class by their armor? Maybe it is clear to some, but istn't clear to me. And you can't paint the armor in any clear way? You can't customize your look at all? It is just bad, bad, bad. The ship, let's talk about how crummy the ship is. No cockpit and confusing scale. Where does my guy sit? Idk, there is no clear cockpit. Wouldn't it be cool to see my guy sitting in the ship while getting ready to head off to missions? Maybe we could even seem him but on that really awesome helmet I finally go, oh wait I had an awesome helmet from jump off. Oh great I can spend money getting a ship that I have no connection to. Remember all the fun adventures we had in that iconic ship from destiny? Ya, neither do i. Gameplay, headshots are way too easy, missions are repetitive. Repetitive missions are usually ok in FPS, because the story drives you to want to complete them. I mean, in almost every level in every FPS game you are going to have to go somewhere and shoot something. Well, in most of those games what is really motivating you is the want to see how the story ends. Since I don't care about the story in Destiny, I don't want to complete the missions and they get boring. That being said, most FPS's mix it up, bomb going off here, time crunch there, run away or rescue mission whatever anything. Did I mention headshots are way to easy? Like, you won't be even trying to get a head shot and you will wind up with one. Also, nothing moves in the environment, nothing is destructible I don't even know if you can knock over a simple can. Can't cut gras nothing changes. It is like it was painting this way and that is how the world always looked. Very 2005. The graphic are nice, they do landscape very well. If I want a landscape painting for my house I am calling bungie. If I want a game that feels somewhat real I am calling Dice. The problem again here is the story, we don't have any feel to see anything cool, because the story doesn't drive anything to be cool. A simple setup example "ion's ago these launchers stood tall and full" then when we see a launcher tall and full in some mission that it actually excites us. Someone in this universe needs to be working towards a clear goal and it needs to be explained to us in that space. I mean, what's the "fallen"'s goal in the game? Is it just to mess stuff up and kill people? That's fine, just say they are some kind of corrupted guardians that now hunt guardians and boom! Suddenly it is like ... that could be us? A little more weight. I could go on and on about this game, it is SO disappointing. All that being said, I give credit to Bungie for trying to be innovative and the game isn't buggy ( that I have noticed ) and navigation in the game and in the system are somewhat clear, plus 1080P gets some credit. That's why it gets a 2 otherwise, I wouldn't buy this game. Expand

The games has been developed to be a rpg/fps game but it seems to be doing bad both the things. I'll never spend again for a game that has been overhyped by marketing strategy and advertisements. I got to level 20+5 Light Levels (25 total) and the end game grind is crazy, you'll need around 30 strikes a week to max your Vanguard marks at 100, probably 40+ pvp matches a week, thats well over 40 hours of game play a week to even have a chance at buying one piece of the best gear every 2 weeks.
    3. Pvp is so broken with unbalancing I don't even know where to start, piece of advice...play as a Titan, no other class should even exist.
    4. ALL of the worlds combined in Destiny don't even make up the same land space as the Barrens in WoW, it's so small, zero exploration, but it does look pretty.
    5. AI is so stupid, very predictable, I soloed multiple strikes after team members lost connection, dropped, etc....the bosses just have lots of HP, very little strategy except for running around avoiding damage.
    6. The Pvp reward system does not reward players at the top, it just a random clump of crap, random rewards to random people. You could just go afk and still have a great chance at gear.
    7. Spaceships, Personal Craft, Gear are all just cosmetic for the most, gear just improves your special and grenade timers
    8. Every world is instanced with a 1 minute load timer, there is zero sandbox and zero rewards for even exploring a planet, those public missions would be great if there were even players on the planets, most of the time it's me and just a few others.
    9. Storyline is non-existent......really, there is nothing there.....Zelda on Nintendo had more to offer.

    Good Side
    1. I got $43.00 back from Gamestop and put it towards Shadows of Mordor, so I only spent about $17.00 to explore what Destiny had to offer.

I found this game to be way overhyped and other than outstanding graphics, it felt like a generic Halo. First off, you begin with your character being dead? Seriously? Plus if you select a non-human character, why are you ‘found’ on earth? How did you get there and why? Your AI partner, weapons, body shielding and enemies all feel like a poorer version of Halo. I also think the mechanics of combat operate in the same fashion as Its much better ‘forerunner’ and while I consider Gears of War to have the best combat style, Destiny should offer more than just standing in the open during a gun battle. While Halo has the same mechanics, that was a different time and that franchise is so much stronger. I’m an older gamer (over 35 years playing) so I like my main story campaign to be offline and not see a bunch of other players bouncing all over the screen and around my character when I’m trying to play. I also like to be able to pause a game if I need to and you just can’t do it in this game which is a big negative. I just could not enjoy this game given how poorly it is in gameplay and story. I already return it so I could recoup most of my money. I would strongly recommend you rent the game for a $1 or $2 and see what you think. It’s clearly not worth the $60.

It mostly takes the flaws and bad aspects of these genres and combines them.

Destiny ticks off most of the MMO tropes: You have reputation npcs, dungeons, a raid (including a weekly raid lockout timer) and battlegrounds where your gear from the pve mode is put to use as well as fairly big instanced zones with npc enemies/monsters sprinkled across them and even some warhammer style public quests.
What it lacks though is anything that makes mmos enjoyable:
-It does not have smartly designed boss encounters like world of warcraft or terra, instead the elites and bosses are just big bulletspongers with the nonexistent behavioral patterns of an elwynn forest boar.
-It lacks the social aspect of mmos, instead of being put in the zones with hundreds of other people you are (hidden)matchmade to some instant area with a handful of players that you will most likely never see again (as they will be in a different instance than you next time)
-there is no real way to communicate, there is no text chat, no zone chat, no proximity based voice chat, nothing, you can't play or communicate with people unless you invite them to your party first.
-there is no mmo style economy or trading to bring people together
It's all the bits that make an mmo bad, without the good bits that make people tolerate all the bad in a game like wow.

    On the fps/halo side:
The game lacks the vast variety of game modes from halo multiplayer, there are no skull modifiers to make you want to replay missions, there is no epic campaign with story exposition , no unique weapons like the needler.
Instead you get a story with less effort put into it than your average f2p mmo and mmo style monster spawns(the boring ones you grind your levels up on in mmos, not the cool bosses with cool mechanics).

    On the borderlands/diablo loot side:
There is not even a quarter of the variety in the weapons you get compared to borderlands, there are little to no cool effects or modifiers, most of the loot is just the same weapon within its category with a different skin, a slightly higher fire rate or higher damage. If you expected anything remotely as cool as a rocket launcher that shoots 5 homing rockets that also act as mini black holes when they explode like in borderlands then you thought wrong.

The way loot is delivered is awful too, instead of loot fountains or beams from diablo/borderlands and being able to instantly see what item you got, you have to exit to the main hub town of the game , talk to an npc and open what is essentially a gambling chest with random loot (just with a different name)
What was the point of this extra step other than to make it more laborious and annoying to check out that legendary drop (that will turn out to just be a rare weapon or helmet most of the time when you open it)

Speaking of the hub town, it serves absolutely no purpose.
There is no voice chat in the hub town even within your own group, there is no way to text chat to people, the only way to 'communicate' is with some pointless emotes.
Since the world is not actually connected (you just load into different instanced zones with loading screens from a menu) and you can't use the hub town to meet or talk to people, who did they bother with it?
They copied the concept of an mmo town (including the reputation, quest , class and vendor npcs dotted across it) without understanding why it exists in the first place in mmos...
It's just ... there... it would have been much more convenient to replace it with a menu that let you access all the store/storage/reputation menus with the press of a button, rather than force you to run back and forth between characterless meaningless npcs in a hub area that serves no purpose.

Now that I covered the game, it's time to talk about false advertising:
there have been videos of the developers pointing at the environment in the distance and saying 'see all that, you can go there! (but we won't now in the interest of time), they sold the world as being bigger than anything they had done before and set a new standard in the industry.
But you can't go there... the world is not very big at all, each planet has one biome to visit and that is full of invisible walls, battlefield type forbidden zones where you simply die if you enter and physical walls. You can't go anywhere

They claimed the game only begins after the level cap and the story, when in fact the 'post game' consists of a few boring sterile dungeons with the same boring bulletsponge bosses that can't hold a candle to an mmo boss, ONE raid (which isn't out yet) and repeating some missions in areas you have already been to , where you fight higher level versions of the exact same enemies you fought in the story , at the exact same places. If there ever was any post game content they cut it all out to sell as DLC

Take a look at those positive critic "reviews" and tell me that all those high scores didn't come from websites with Destiny advertisements plastered all over them. Nope, no conflict of interest here at all!

Also, I have a sinking suspicion that a good chunk of those User Review "10" scores are from Bungie employees trying to counter the damage from irate customers leaving zeroes. After experiencing buyer's remorse a day after plunking down my $60 on this POS, I was angry enough to create an account and write an honest review devoid of fanboyism and corporate sponsorship. Why do you think there is so much hatred for this game?! People feel RIPPED OFF and are voicing their anger about it. This isn't some troll tactic (or this whole "zero campaign" would have afflicted other games, too), this is how user reviews work: people are voicing their opinions based on their experiences with a product. In this case, I'm ranting about why I feel like this game isn't worth the disc it was printed on. I came in with the expectation of a shooter-MMO and ended up with a half-assed, last-gen console port on my brand new PS4.

    The Good:
    The music is decent

Some of the shooting feels fun (for a few hours)

I didn't experience any major technical hitches online

    The Bad:
30 FPS?! I didn't buy a PS4 to play games at 30 frames per second!

The sparse amount of mute players that flutter around during the campaign - they vanish when they're needed and are just annoying when they're not.

The mission designs are lazy and amateur. I've seen more complexity and encounter structures in the original Everquest from 1999!

Speaking of MMOs, Destiny is NOT an MMO - sure you can /dance emote but that's not what makes an MMO an Massively Multiplayer Online game. There are very few people around (maybe a small handful in the single Tower/Town) and even PvP matches are small-scale. Defiance was a (bug-ridden turd of an) MMO and actually had an open, shared world with hundreds of players. Firefall (PC only) is a shooter-MMO with an open world and hundreds of players sharing it. Planetside is a shooter-MMO (albeit PvP-only). etc. etc. etc. Destiny is a small collection of maps (that are called "planets" or "The Tower") where a few mute players occasionally drive by on their Star Wars SpeederBikes while you shoot waves of identical enemies over and over.

Also, this game is suffering from last-gen-itis. It was definitely made for last gen consoles because all of the limitations were ported "up" to the PS4. Why are we being sold a last gen game for next gen consoles?!

The story is laughably bad. I mean "Magic Missile!" bad. They seriously want me to visit their website to read up on the "lore?" How about you actually let players experience it in the damn game FFS?! Also, Tyrion Lannister as an Asperger's patient squawking in your ear through a malfunctioning auto-tune filter is TV-mute inducing.

There are like 5 enemies in the entire game and you've seen them all about an hour into playtime. Hope you like flying claymore charges and robots with many arms because you'll be fighting them for the entire game (with a few 3D Studio Max primitive spheres thrown in now and then).

Why am I forced to use a f***ing cursor on a console menu?! Who designed this and why are they still employed?

    Bottom Line:
This lazy, sloppy and completely uninspiring game was squeezed out with little to nothing new to offer for its $60 asking price. Seriously, what does this game offer players that older games in this genre don't already do better? All that money clearly went to promoting the game and buying "professional" reviews because it's apparent none of it went to actually making the game.
I really hope this warning reaches someone on the fence and saves them from wasting $60 on this pig with lipstick. Mine's going on Craigslist.

    Wow. That was surprisingly cathartic.

Basic elements of development have been ignored. For one thing, the narrative elements are appalling. They're essentially non-existent. The world, characters, and narrative are totally undeveloped. I don't mean developed poorly. I mean literally no effort has been made to construct any real kind of story. Dialogue is completely barebones, only serving basic game functionality. Peter Dinklage's phoned-in performance makes total sense now, because there is no attempt at an actual script, nor is his character developed. He has nothing to work with and there was no legitimate reason to hire such a huge actor for the role he plays. The only reason he was hired was as a transparent marketing con to trick people into thinking that this game actually had some kind of narrative content. "Marketing con" is probably the best general description of this game, in fact. Another good example of this is the music, for which Paul McCartney was hired to create a completely mediocre credits song. Again, this decision was obviously made with no desire to actually create a good product, it was solely made to generate publicity. The rest of the music is equally mediocre. And then of course the gameplay. Again, it's completely barebones and none of the hyped elements have been fleshed out. The revolutionary "shared world shooter" stuff is just more marketing rubbish - it's just a co-op game with an undeveloped hub world. And the actual shooting is completely bog standard. It's competently crafted, but the enemies are extremely simplistic and monotonous, and likewise the gameplay in general is completely repetitive. All in all, this is not just a bad game, but a game which could actually do serious damage to the industry in the wake of other uber-hyped triple-A mediocrities such Watch Dogs. It is clear that no real work has been put into the development. Again, I must emphasise that the developers haven't honourably tried something but failed. They have literally not tried. Content has not been developed. The millions of dollars have just sunk into the bank accounts of various Bungee employees over the unjustifiably protracted development period, and they've sat back and laughed it up, comfortable in the knowledge that at the end of the day they can just play the now all-too-familiar game of whipping up a storm of disingenuous hype amongst a credulous customer base, and embargo reviews. And based on the initial sales it looks like they've gotten away with it. But if things keep going like this, it's only a matter of time before the public catches on to this behaviour and loses faith in the industry. Thank God that sites like metacritic are coming to the fore so that customers can call them out for it en masse. Don't buy this game. Expand

Unbalanced, unfun, unimaginative. Please wait for Battlefront 3 instead of buying this. Or buy Battlefront 2 if you so must. Just not this one.

    Garbage.

Now, if you are a single player or coop person person, be wary.
    PvP is Destiny's strongest point.
It is only getting worse from here.
There is no fun to be had in destiny in coop or singleplayer after level 20.
    It's just farming.
They made this game like an mmorpg, with boss loots and marks of **** You get like 2 or 3 of those marks for every instance you beat and you need like 2 or 3 hundred of them to buy some equipment. Just like WoW, right, right? Hahaha!
NO!! This is not **** World of Warcraft! Far from it.
You don't even have 4 player team size like in most other coop games, you have 3.
Why? probably because they only have 3 classes? I don't know.

    Garbage.

If you think you're gonna have fun just killing enemies, be wary.
There are four enemy factions and each have the same enemy types. A peon, a damage dealer, a tank and the special class (wizards, hydra, captain aaand ... ummm ... some fourth one for the alien race that had no purpose in the game to begin with so I don't even remember after just having completed it). That's 4 general classes in 4 fractions, so 16 "different" enemies. Really it's just four, but whatever, let's be generous.
You WILL get sick of the same enemies over and over. Believe me. I've been there. The AI scrapes at the bare minimum of what is acceptable in enemy AI. Extremely predictable hide behind cover and shoot mentality which will only serve to get you even more bored than you already were.
No variety, no fun, no enjoyment to be found in killing these.

    Garbage!

If you think that all that stuff isn't so bad, because you don't care about post-game and pvp, you just wanna enjoy the story, BE. ****. WARY!
    THERE IS NO STORY.
    Literally.
    They didn't make one.
    They didn't bother.
It's the only explanation that makes sense:
They made the instances to "work" in multiplayer, so you'd have "fun" repeating them over and over and then LOOSELY tied them together with "plot".
Well, tough luck. I didn't have any fun. It was boring as **** And the plot isn't anywhere to be even estimated!
Let me get this straight. If I sound like I'm exaggerating, Stop, drop an roll, because I am going to heat you up!
    One sentence.
One sentence is most you'll get for explanation of anything. Upon entering an instance you get a SHORT intro from your ghost (the AI that follows you around) with about one sentence of information that is linked to the overall 'plot' by pure coincidence at best.
No quests. Yes. NO. QUESTS! That means no quest texts either. You just do whatever your map says you can do at your level.
No interaction with any story relevant characters save for the few cutscenes. There's like less than 10 of them and they are, admittedly, decent. Just decent.
So, to reiterate: No text to tell you what's going on, no explanation for anything, no characters, no anything.
    GARBAGE!

So, in conclusion, 3/10 for graphics and music. Sure, those things better be good, because they sure as **** payed enough money for it, but these things still have to affect the score somewhat, so I gave one extra point for these two things.
The music is really good. I might even buy it.

THIS GAME IS GARBAGE, but the dancing still looks cool.

The "play with friends" thing is half-baked as it doesn't even let you communicate with strangers and you have to sync up with your friends constantly just to get the full experience of the game. You can't even play this game offline, it requires a constant, high-speed internet connection which is a huge turnoff to all those guys who play offline. Playing by yourself in Destiny is a boring, repetitive experience and it's frustrating to have to wait 10-15 minutes just to pair up with a couple of idiot strangers. The dependence on others dampens the single player experience, and the story is boring, predictable, and full of annoying cliches. The graphics and music are great, the scenes and atmosphere is wonderful, but this is negated because you have to visit the same place dozens of time to travel. The "cinematic" loading screen (your ship flying around) gets extremely old, and after hours of playing this game, it almost becomes unbearable. Enemies are repetitive, each AI almost exactly the same as the next. The bosses are bullet sponges, armed with the same AI used to power every single other bot in the game. This game's shooting and fighting is smooth, but the enemies are just too boring to fight. If you want to rank up, you must spend hours grinding XP; there are actually specific locations in game dedicated to grinding! Overall, this experience was a massive disappointment. I'm not a massive FPS fan in the first place and needed the game to give me something to NEED to play it. Destiny wasn't what I was hoping for, also I couldn't help but compare it to the other games that I was playing at the same time which were PS3 reboots of Tomb Raider and Last of Us. Both of those games made me want to keep playing. I thought a Next-Gen 'Masterpiece' should have done the same.

First a little about me, I've never played Borderlands and I did not play the Call of Duty series so this review will not compare the game to either. I have however been an avid Halo player playing every single game since the original back on the Xbox. Based on how the Halo series developed and how Bungie put a lot of time into building out the series. They had established themselves even before Halo with Myth and Oni...with that being said there had been a lot of expectation with Destiny because Bungie was behind it. Unfortunately, I feel where the positive aspect of this review ends.
To say that Destiny was slightly a let down is understatement...its rather a big disappointment. Its certainly not deserving of a zero but far from perfection or even as was advertised a "game changing experience" I should clarify "game changing might be accurate if isolationism is an experience. The game plays more like a Beta in my opinion than a finished product. It lacks clear direction, i.e. a FPS that tries to play like an RPG...or an RPG that tries to play like an FPS which one is it? The result is a product that fails at its attempts to meet both. It actually isn't surprising to me while Bungie itself has had an impeccable history in terms of game development, no company can remain at the top forever. In the same way that Square was regarded as the "it" company with respect to RPGs to feel from grace...most interestingly enough after its merger with Enix. Bungie entered into a 10 year publishing agreement with Activision Blizzard...a company that itself has produced a variety of games but far from masterpieces. Games like Diablo, WOW, Starcraft and COD are all great series in their own regards and have certainly appealed to their niche groups however I would argue that they aren't masterpieces. Destiny however marketed itself to be just that. It clearly borrows from its Halo roots with tight controls and beautiful environments aspects that I can’t dispute that particular attention to detail had been put into however the game (at least at launch) is clearly missing things that make it..well enjoyable. The thing I loved MOST about the Halo series is that I had options. Options to go online and play multiplayer with random individuals, tackle missions, objectives, pop off zombies or just enjoy raw undisputed red vs blue but I also had the option to tackle on the main campaign. Now here is what I will say about Bungie in terms of storytelling, they’ve never truly been great at it. After several years of playing Halo there are obvious parts of the story that if I hadn’t done my own individual research, read about online or gathered from graphic novels/books I would be completely clueless to the story. I will say that the story of Master Chief had certainly expanded from Halo 1 up through Halo 3 (when it was in Bungie’s hands) so with that being said perhaps the same will come of Destiny.

All in all Destiny isn’t a bad game, but its certainly not a memorable one and at the moment not one that I feel I want to go back playing over and over again. I know there are players that enjoy the mundane task of grinding thru levels and levels over and over but for the casual player that likes to pick up and title and looks some substance I feel the game is well quite lacking. Honestly a shooter that caught me by surprise in terms of story and gameplay was Wolfenstien…I was SHOCKED at how good the game was and how much the series had progressed from the days of old and despite it not looking as “Nextgen” as games like Rome or the Last of Us I felt it was a great FPS. All in all I still have Farcry 4 which right now is looking to have lots of potential, than again it wasn’t marketed as being a “gamechanger”. Hopefully the marketing department will now learn to choose their words a little more carefully next time as they have the potential to alienate their demographics and ultimately hurt developer’s credibility in the long term. Will Destiny hurt Bungie that still remains to be seen? Can it recover? Considering they stated they will be dedicating 10 years to series only time will tell.

    That's it! Nothing else.

-------------If you don't like the moronic PvP you can do STRIKES, STRIKES, STRIKES, STRIKES.....
That means you shoot about 4-6 billion bullets in a boss. Surviving endless enemy waves in the meantime that are spawnin from everywhere. And get a **** as a reward. Or get awesome stuff but not for your class.

---------------The content is ridiculously tiny. After that little joke called story, you are GRINDING and FARMING forever.
    Really forever!

-----------The PvP is like: throw everything from Level 4 to Level 30 in one Lobby and let's see what happens.

-------No actual loot system. It's all luck!!!!!!!! And the best thing is: If you fight a boss, he's dropping nothing!!

Don't spend money on this game people! It's fake, bland, repetitive!!!

so my review is based off of 40+hrs of play time and what i read in review before release on game informer and other various gaming sites of what was expected. and after my play through and before reading other post-launch reviews. so bare with me as i start with the pros

    PROS:
-the game control feel solid and don't feel badly mapped or clunky. played halo and you got them memorized already. pluses all around

-the set design for stages feel well thought out and design. every planet (and moon) feels alive. for instance the earth shot from the moon. you see earth as it rotates around the sun from darkness to light.

-multiplayer, reference the first pro from this list. its what keep this game from lower scores

    - and if you have played BL2 or any other grind fest game then you're used to co-op and grinding for better loot and skins

-killing a boss in a slug fest fight is fun with friends. the sense of "f**k yeah"

    CONS:
-unlike BL2 the co-op fun that you had trading loot of guns or skins you don't want with friends. Is not there period, you're stuck with it until you do the game way "trading" and that suck even more cause decent loot drops are rare. and sometimes lopped sided. like your star player goes just "hammer time" on a raid or multi-player and gets what is equivalent to a common white weapon while the "walking bait" member gets legendary orange

-difference in term of playing style of characters is negligible. beside the accustomed special move they don't effect your strategy as like the guns you want equip your character. will using this be better suited for my titan "soldier" abilities or my friends warlock "gun wizard" much as other MMO player classes. but remember CON 1 "no player trading" so optimizing is out of the questing

-multi-player need some type of nerfing to limit one shot kills against other oR new players. take note i haven't played the game much after leveling past 25 so i don't really know the state of it so far.

-maps are to linear and small for game of this size and budget. enter same spot...exit same spot on other side of map.

-the story will run 7-12 hr if you minimize deaths and play as a team. But a game this size and buget should have 7-12hrs of story. better yet NO MMO should have that. end game should be a sprint to the finish. something you can finish in the first day of playing. IT'S A MMO story is your backbone the lore behind it is what keeps people searching maps for artifacts and playing in general. Your paying 60+ dollars of exposition not the real story. just setup for the day one DLC...more money (i know it's not released yet but it was announced with the games release.)

    - mission design was to simple and repetitive. go to objective A. I can't open the door but i can hack it. Defend our position until i can finish. Doors open go to object B. Oh snap door is locked but i can hack it....all doors open, all waves hoarded lets go to venus and do the same thing. There is no variety like doors is closed and i cant hack it. blow it the open or we must push our way threw the enemy base to find another way in.

-raids are exactly the same bosses don't provide new strategy to the next run through. just become bullet sponges and make fights last hours while using the same combination of lines to beat them. No "you want to run left to avoid my attack I'll send a add-on to force you right" or "i have a new AoE to make you rage cause you don't have armor or weapon to counter"

-after shoveling out 60+ dollars you have to more money (dlc) to get more story run time. more gun with hopefully better loot drops. and more mission variety. i understand dlc to add-on to the player experience but not to add-on to a bare-bone game.
It is equivalent to going to a 5 star restaurant (bungie/activision) and asking for the $60 beef stew and they give you gravy. you asked the waiter where the other stuff in the picture (per-release hype from bungie) you have to pay another 35 for the steak and vegetables (content). we got it right here ready to drop (DLC) but are you willing to pay for it.

    conclusion
Its a very fun polished game you will have fun but where do you draw the line of fun and cheap ploy of a 5 star game pulling 2 star game moves. And thats why i gave this game a 4 cause of the glaring cons of a business model bungie/activision are trying to pull. its 10 yr life cycle is really 5-6 stretched thin i mean really thin to make up development cost (first game) and gouge the consumer of more money (dlc). you don't pay full msrp price car for the chassis with no interior or engine. and you don't buy a game for full price without story or content. sale price yes full NOPE. if you have fun with this game all the power to you "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness". But if for any reason you didn't like this game for defined reason keep the game don't but anything else for it until bungie makes it worth while.

    DON't BELIEVE THE HYPE

The pvp is boring after the first hour and has broken mechanics. The promise of this being an rpg pvp is false. Again, in case I did not stress it enough:

Pay to Win is a past phenomenon. With Destiny Bungie and Activision introduced a new concept of Pay to Play. Thats right, you have to pay for the 9.51MB DLC to play Nightfall or Heroic Strikes which makes me question if its too hard to provide an alternative strike for non-DLC players.

This is a dangerous precedent set by greddy corporates.

Destiny was the biggest dissapointments in video game history. It's unfinished, and that's what I hate after it snatched my 70 dollars and shoved it in Activison's pocket. When we think of Bungie, we think Halo and awesome first person shooters. But here, no no! The graphics look clean, brilliant and very nice and that gives it a 2. Each level feels the same and each is shoved with DinkleBot-telling-you- to -fight- off -enemies- while- he- is- hacking- which- takes- forever- Horde-Mode and that gets annoying quickly. It's an unfinished game, with HORRIBLE voice acting from Peter Dinklage as DinkleBot, a story which nobody gives a hoot about and extra info cut out from the game to shove it into Bungie's website and the extra DLC which is another 30 dollars. That makes Destiny a 100 dollar package! And it's definitely not worth that much! The RPG elements are bad, they don't work and someone go tell Bungie that grinding will not make the RPG that they were aiming for! As an exclusive PlayStation owner, I've never had the opportunity to play Halo. I've seen game play footages and loved the art direction and game mechanics that Bungie has created for Halo. So when I first learned that Bungie was creating a new FPS that will also be released for the PlayStation, I was anxious for the game to come out.

Picking up the game, and playing the first few missions. I felt like this game was going to be great. The game play was smooth, the FPS prospect of it was amazing, and who could complain about the next gen graphics? I couldn't wait to get through the missions, leveling my character and experiencing the end game content.

That was the first day the game came out. Ever since that day. I have no clue what the hell happened. After a few days, I've hit level 20. Yay, right? Unfortunately not. Every single mission that I played through was the same as the previous one. Sure, the scenery has changed; but you're doing the same thing over and over. Not to mention when you beat the final mission, you're left even more clueless. WTF happened/ The story was a piece of crap. I've read better stories on Reddit by users with a better plot and story line than Destiny.

Just to be clear, level 20 isn't exactly the max level you can hit. It's just the max level you can hit by experience. You can actually level up to 30 with gears. In which you can to grind the same mission (weekly heroic/nightfall) or do the same 5 strikes over and over again. You would also think that for the strikes that requires PS+ and a group of 3 to play together. That there'd be more of a challenge. But that's not the case with Destiny. It's the same grind and defend and sponge mode boss all over again. At least their raid is fun. After you've ran it once. Then it's all the same thing over and over again.

Another terrible thing about Destiny. Is their RNG. You could run the raid every week and chances are you'll never get the gears that you want, because most of the time it'll just be shards. Legendary cryptarchs rarely drops. So you've left with farming the strikes to get vanguard marks to buy the legendary gears. Too bad they're capped at 100 per week, so you'd have to run the strikes dozens of time per week just to upgrade your character.

There's a lot of things wrong with the game. Lack of story line. Repetitive game play. Daily grind and farming. You could argue that that's all you do with any other RPGs and MMOs The thing is, those RPG and MMOs are actually fun and rewarding with incredible character development. Destiny is none of those things.

Another thing is.. people tend to call Destiny an MMO. I can't say that it is. You're grouped with 2 other people for strikes and the weekly nightfall. You're group with 5 others for the raid which you can only run once per week. You can group with 2 others to do patrol (all of which are the same). And there's a limit of 16 people total that can be in the tower (that you can't even communicate with). So no, it's far from an MMO.

Also, I'm not buying that there's more content in future DLCs and that Bungie plans for Destiny to be a 10 year game. No, I spent $67 on Destiny, I expect $67 worth of a game without the need to pay more just to get more of the game that should have been there from the start.

This is every mission in the game, as well as every strike mission. There is no story whatsoever, and the only way to learn more about the world and what's going on is to turn off your game, go bungies website, and read some cards of info that are unlocked by playing the game. Not only is this a cheap device to get people to play more, but it breaks immersion completely, which makes the music and the beauty of the game pointless. There's 4 groups of enemies in the game, and each group has different kinds of enemies. There are no unique enemies besides the bosses, and those are actually just larger, slightly different looking versions of one of the normal enemies. The loot system is completely broken, and in such a way that you must play for days just to find a better item. There are 3 categories of weapon; Primary, Secondary, and heavy weapons. Primary weapons consist of rifles, and pistols. There are only 3 kinds of secondary weapons, and only 2 kinds of heavy weapons. Because of the multiplayer battles, the best weapons are eventually nerfed, making them nothing special. When I find a really nice gun, I don't feel good about getting it, because I know it took no skill. I could have just been weighing my team down, and still got the weapon. Bungie and Activision sold us a game that was incomplete, expecting us to pay for expansions to complete the game. I will never buy another game from Activision because of this game. It's the last straw for me. None of this is even the worst about the game. Bungie released videos of story and interaction between the player and other characters. None of this exists in final game. The AI is made of dumb bullet sponges, and the spawn enemies and spawn points were exactly the same every time... no matter how many times a new quest required you to play through the same tired levels (expect dozens or hundreds of times for some maps). Bosses are just larger and/or take more bullets to kill. No real change in strategy anywhere. The online multiplayer and coop have no matchmaking... so prepare to find groups offline.

I've never been more disappointed in a game that promised so much. And after the subsequent DLC rendered vanilla destiny unplayable... I kind lost any respect I have for Bungie and Activision who were previously my two favorite developers. It sets a terrible precedent for game making that you can massively under-deliver and coast on pre-orders, then pull content out from underneath the day one adopters unless they continue to buy up. This is my last pre-order, and the last game from either of these developers.

My main reaction to this game is the frustration of seeing how much missed potential there is for the franchise. There is so much more that Bungie can be doing with Destiny, and I was hoping they'd hit the nail on some of them with D2, but alas it's not the case. PvP multiplayer? Unfinished, gloriously imbalanced, been-there-done-that, glitchy.

I should have seen this coming from Activision regardless who actually developed it because otherwise it's hard to imagine Bungie was actually involved.. It's the same boring, repetitive, unintelligent mess that has become (and continues to perpetuate) Call of Duty. No actual thought went into play testing, reflection, or common sense mechanical decision making.

A perfect example of everything fundamentally wrong with this game is the story. Clocking in at around 10 hours, it ends exactly how it starts- no characters, no point, no plot, and so full to the brim of watered down sci fi psychobabble every single loading screen consists of nothing but disjointed terms that mean nothing and sound ridiculous. "A ketch!", "Queen of bleh", "the darkness bluh", "A koris!", "Storm of Struvock", "The tinkle of flub"... I've read better science fiction on the back covers of JA pulp novels at the public library.

Once you finish the entirely anticlimactic story (not that you cared anyway), what else is there?

Well, if you've got a couple of friends and you like playing overly drawn out horde mode missions that you've already completed in the story campaign you might find a couple hours of fun in the "Strike" playlists. The first thing you'll notice is that most of the post game gear you have is now completely useless so look forward to replaying the same hour long boss fights over and over in the hopes you'll randomly get better gear just to play the same missions on a higher difficulty*. You'll do this until you realize you can get more and better drops in 20 minutes of PvP than you could in several hours of PvE.

*Difficulty is completely relative by the way as every single enemy in this game (besides the basic minions) has splash damage based attacks and no amount of armor will stop you from getting killed repeatedly from enemies who don't even need to shoot you. Enemies who's AI doesn't at all improve with difficulty, only their egregiously large heath bars. This all presupposed you have a few friends because good luck meeting new people thanks to the convoluted and painful "fireteam" system.

When you do find that drops are much more plentiful in PvP you can spend hours getting pissed off over horrendously lazy, mind blowingly imbalanced, shoddily designed mechanics in one of a couple modes. You have TDM, Domination, and variants of 3v3 slayer.

TDM is about what you'd expect from CoD- spawn in some random place and run around for a few moments before getting insta-killed by a jumping rocket, a hilariously far-reaching lunge melee attack, or any number of head-scratchingly overpowered "super" attacks.

Domination (called "control" here) can be fun if it wasn't for some of the worst map design in FPS history. No hyperbole- every single map was designed solely with spawn trapping in mind. There will be two points in a somewhat close proximity with direct, safe lanes of view to a third, proportionately farther away point. If you start on the good side and cap both close points, victory is pretty much a given as you can stand behind cover and easily pick off the enemy as they spawn over and over too far away to cap another point. Not that it matters when a single super attack can completely secure (or stop) a point capture with zero effort.

I wont talk about the third mode because ultimately it doesn't matter. The fact is the PvP side of things is at best broken and at worst non-functional. Watch in rage inducting glee as you: get killed by supers through walls, enemies mysteriously take no damage at opportune times, are unable turn your head to look around you (even with your sensitivity on blast), get stuck on map terrain, get match made 2v6, constantly have players quit mid match with no penalty, struggle to navigate map poor design, constantly fight with the most aggressive sticky-aim in gaming history (and still not hit anything), and drop dead before an enemy actually attacks OR kill enemy players only to watch them run around and shoot at you for full seconds before they finally die.

According to Bungie.net I've played Destiny for almost 24 hours stretched across 3 days and I've seen absolutely everything this game has to offer already; every mission, map, mode, and weapon. I've seen at least enough to know that there isn't enough content to keep my interest and no matter how much (or across how many modes) I play "The Crucible" it doesn't get any better.

In my experience the game is boring, shallow, and repetitive. I wish I had bought the physical copy so I could trade back for some of the money I put in to it.

Repetitive- There is really only one mission over and over. Deploy ghost at a certain point and defend him against waves. Eventually you'll find a boss that is really only a bullet sponge and nothing more. The sword mission was awesome as it was the only break in the monotony.
Boring- The story is short and uninspiring. It has potential but is hardly explored. The voice actors seem to be doing what they can with what they're given. Why not just let Dinklage use his native accent?

This game is pretty good. I like aspects of it, but it also feels quite limited and I felt like i got the idea of the whole game just from the beta I played. Quite repetitive, but if you are playing with friends (even though its a limit of 3?) it is a lot more fun. Hoping this will tide me over until Far Cry 4 or Dying Light, but its not looking hopeful.

Not the worst but definitely one of the most uncomplete games I have ever played. Few levels, few enemies, eternal loading times, repetitive events with absolutely no variation. To be fair, the classic multiplayer PvP is quite fun but it's not balanced well. I wish I hadn't bought this game.

It's not an MMO, mainly because it lacks the first M in the acronym, Massive. The biggest PVP situation you can get yourself into currently is 6v6. Really? For me it's very typical of the COD style we've all become antiquated with and while it's a good style, Bungie didn't really try to do anything to set itself apart. The playstyle in Co-op got very repetitive very fast and was generally not very challenging. The 'extra' skills you learn are very generic as well and don't add much to the combat style since you're still just going to be shooting everything and throwing grenades anyways. I'd rather be playing CoD or Battlefield were at least the game play is challenging and ever changing.
I might be biased in giving it a 0, but I rate it lower than I normally would because I feel deceived by the developer and publisher. They sold this game as an MMO that you could explore the universe with and go into massive battles with your buddies against tough enemies, and it's nothing like that. It's just a borderlands clone.
The one redeeming factor I can mention about this game is it is very beautiful. Bungie has been good about making very visually appealing games. Maybe in the future they should just focus on their game engine and market that out to game developers, or get better developers in to work on their own stuff. Really disappointing, but not surprising for Bungie after coming off the heels of Microsoft.

I think we as a demographic of people need to stand up for what's right. Overhyping a game to high heaven and promising the moon, and then delivering a bland and average game with none of the features promised is just not right. In any other industry fines would be levied for outrageous claims, but in video games you can promise things that aren't even in the game!

In any other industry fines would be levied for outrageous claims, but in video games you can promise things that aren't even in the game!

There is NO LOOT. No chests, enemies drop NOTHING. You get items as rewards for finishing quests, and they are usually boring and bland, with names like "SINA JAGUAR 2.1R3". wtf is that?? A HELMET. Oh wait it's also a pair of pants because they have the SAME NAME.

Items also have the same art design as items from Runescape-- a free to play online MMORPG that's about 15 years old (meaning NONE).

Equipped items don't even change how you look. You can notice a few slight adjustments here and there, but the overall character model accounts for 65% of what you see, so everybody looks the same.

The menu design is horrendous and archaic, nothing makes sense and I still can't figure out where certain things are.

Gameplay wise it's really just a stripped down version of Halo. Areas are quite small, and every mission is exactly the same as the last.

The story is no "Cinematic Experience" as promised, but rather nonexistent.

Multiplayer is like Halo and Call of Duty, minus all the vehicles, cool level design, and tactical gameplay. Run around and shoot ****

If you're thinking of buying this game, all I can say is -- "SPACE WIZARDS". Yes, there are space wizards.

They basically combine the crappiest elements of Halo and Borderlands 2 with space, magic, and then dumb the whole package down further.

I guess I'm just saying that I feel like this game should have flopped and gotten everybody canned, especially the devs making outrageous claims to the press. But instead the hype they've built has just proven a new business model for the gaming industry-- that delivery doesn't matter, only what you can **** prospective buyers into with hype.

This game has single handedly made me quit playing video games. I'm done. I can't support an industry that considers this kind of garbage it's crowning gem.

Because absolutely no one will join your freaking fire team. Everyone is either already playing with friends, or running around solo for no reason. This is an ONLINE game, and yet there's nothing cooperative about it. There's no matchmaking feature for joining parties to do missions with so you're out of luck if you haven't pre-arranged a team.

You cannot chat with anyone in the game world, further making it impossible to work cooperatively (especially during public events / world bosses, etc.). The only way to group up seems to be to run around the world trying to find any of the 3 people you might just find in your zone at any given point and spam them with fire team invites...That's if they stop moving long enough for you to even select them. There's no way to say 'hey let's join up', so you just have to send cold party invites which probably annoy people.

The story is absolutely HORRIBLE, who the heck even knows what it's supposed to be about. The voice acting is horrendous. The only thing the game has going for it is the shooting, but the missions are too hard to play alone so good luck even trying to enjoy that.

The loot system is horrible ( there is so much RNG and anything not related to RNG has massive rep and high currency cost which in and of it-self is limited weekly, boss's dont drop loot ), the story is short and unimaginative( not going to go into in so as not to spoil but just know it feels like someone's first year in a high school creative writing class made it ), communication with party members is harder then it needs to be ( this is suppose to be a MMO it should not take a arm and a leg to group and there should be open communication , ya know that thing that makes MMO's possible ), its no where near as Open as it claims to be ( the same area's are used over and over and over again, along with the same missions ) and finally PVP is the worst I have seen in a long time ( at "max" level you can unload in someone and they can stare at you hard and kill you because there have wayyyyy better weapons ) all in all this game was very disappointing and I dont see myself playing it anymore.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
