Destiny is a very polarizing game. You'll either love it or absolutely hate it.

What really hurt Destiny was Activision's greed. In order to make more money, Bungie was forced to gut the game and remove a significant amount of content to be sold as future DLC. What's left logically feels incomplete. The story barely makes sense, and many plot points are never resolved. Every single character is shallow and underdeveloped. What's their story? What is their goal? The game never tells you.But it's okay, pay $50 more and you may get a continuation of the story in the latest 'Taken King' DLC. I'm sure you'll love it, especially if you're like me and you already spent over $100 on the base game (I pre-ordered the Guardian Edition, which came with the first two DLCs for "free").

There's plenty of missions, but they're all very repetitive and boring. Collect a certain number of items, kill some enemies, protect your little A.I. companion... and that's about it, really. If you ever hope to get any better gear, you'll be repeating these missions over and over and over again until you're absolutely sick of them. The endless grind doesn't feel rewarding or even remotely fun - and this is coming from a person who's spent the past 10 years playing World of Warcraft.

As far as multiplayer goes, you can do the boring missions in a group of three players. But really, why would you even bother? There are also drop-in/drop-out public events. You're in the middle of one of your boring missions when suddenly a massive tank appears from the sky, and you and any other player nearby need to work together to destroy it.

Then there are 3-player strikes (it's like WoW's dungeons), and these are actually quite fun. There's a handy player finder tool, so if none of your friends play Destiny, the game will hook you up with two more players. Some of them are pretty bad, though, and more than once did I have a player tagging along doing nothing or simply sitting in a corner, while the remaining two of us did all the hard work. You can report these slackers, but there seems to be no penalty for this behavior whatsoever.

Destiny also has raids, which are basically strikes with larger fireteams and tougher enemies. Unfortunately, there is no player finder for these. You are forced to go to various websites and find your raid team there. It's inconvenient, and the number one reason why I've never done any raids. They're supposed to be fun, but I'll never know unless Bungie adds a player finder.

PvP was Destiny's biggest selling point, and it seems to be the focus of its developers, seeing how pretty much every single event they've introduced since launch was all about PvP (the only exception was The Queen's Wrath). If you're like me and prefer PvE over PvP, you'll find this rather disappointing. If you love PvP, add 2 more points to my rating. Bungie is constantly tweaking weapons and trying to make PvP more balanced, so that's good, I suppose.

And that's Destiny - the game that promised to be the next Halo, but bigger and better in every way. It could've been good if Bungie was allowed to do their work without Activision's interference. As it is now, it just feels like a desperate money grab. Despite all this, Destiny seems to boast an active fan base (if the official Destiny Facebook page is anything to go by), so the game obviously isn't all that bad. Just really, really flawed.

If you're interested and you'd like to give it a shot, I recommend you wait for a few months until the game gets cheaper, or ideally wait for some sort of an "ultimate" edition, which will inevitably come out and which will contain all the DLCs for a few bucks.

This game is simply built on greed. Bungie used us as Beta testers and put lipstick on their pig. It's still a pig however, equating to a terrible value for veteran players. The taken king is extremely short, as many predicted. Bungie used to make games that were fun to play. They now make hype better than any developer in history.

I even was an Officer in Dads of Destiny and my team was one of the first tackle the Vault of Glass. My family suffered however, I was hooked in the same I was hooked into WoW and other MMOs, but not being single anymore, my family was suffering from the amount I played in the evenings. Of course that is a choice but I have to state that the interval RNG and behavioral science in the game had me pulling the slot machine handle over, and over, and over again.

This game is addictive with little content. Two expensive expansions with VERY little content compared to other DLC expansions for other games left me pissed off. Then they announced and launched the Taken King....a promise of improvement based on a LIE. Destiny that I bought day 1 was NOT what was promised to consumers. The depth was shallow, the "open world" was a joke, and ENTIRE story elements were cut to the floor for possible DLC. This is a big Activision tactic to snake money from gamers pockets, and they certainly DO NOT respect their customers (look at Call of Duty and a gaming engine developed in 1998).

They added in the Taken King, patching a lot of things that were badly developed with the game, but at the price of the FULL DAY 1 GAME!!!! This is insane, you are selling promises from Day 1 that were never delivered, and those that bought day 1 Destiny are crapped on having to pay upwards of $180.00 ($60 Vanilla, $20 Dark below DLC, $20 House of Wolves, $60 The Taken King), while a new player just needs to pony up 60$. This is by far one of the worst business practices I have ever seen.

Which is sad, I look at the content, and I am so tempted to pay up and dive back into the game, and the pull is strong! I love the art style, weapons, classes, and the new subclasses look so cool! But the feeling of being raped by Activision/Bungie is pushing me to be more prudent and logical with my money.

Leveling: Going into a legitimate, second year, expansion, I expected the 34-40 leveling to take a while. Especially since one of their key selling points for their digital collector’s edition was the inclusion of exotic class items that increased XP gains. Nothing could have been further from the truth. If you had 10 or more bounties ready to turn in and an XP booster – either the class item or the Red Bull promotion item – you could literally go from 34 to 39 in 5 seconds of mashing the X button. If you had a full complement of 16 bounties ready to turn in, not only would you go from 34 to the new max level of 40 but also have enough XP to get a set of Motes of Light. They may have taken Light Level out of obtaining max level, but leveling still revolves around increasing your average Light score regardless of max level.

Story: Bungie heavily promoted the story of this expansion so imagine my surprise when the main story arc could be completed in roughly 3 hours. Oryx, the titular Taken King who is seeking revenge for his son, Crota, is shown to be a real bad ass of a boss in the intro cutscene. Yet he’s a complete push over from that point on. An entire defending fleet was obliterated by him but somehow our chump Guardians can manage to get into his Dreadnaught no problem. The final fight with Oryx is nothing short of laughable. The post-Oryx story missions – especially the chain that starts with the mission “Paradox” – are harder than the main story mission itself.

And this is where the wheels really fall off the bus because the amount of recycled content used in this $40 expansion is nothing short of pathetic. During the main story alone, we’re sent through multiple pieces of old content rehashed; for example, being forced to run Chamber of Night backwards yet again. The front half of the raid from Dark Below is reused, as is the front half of Vault of Glass (again) in a secondary story arc line. There is even one mission where you literally do the exact same thing in the exact same place as the final boss fight in House of Wolves main story line – and Ghost even makes a direct comment about fighting in the same place. Quest chains with year old patrol missions as critical steps, running old missions backwards yet again… It’s almost as if Bungie is TRYING to troll people.

But, the Dreadnaught! You might be saying. The Dreadnaught is new and a decent added area but, to be brutally honest, it’s really just four medium sized spaces that have a lot of empty areas connecting them. Exploration is fun, initially, but then it just becomes tiresome. In the main story, you only deal with the Dreadnaught three times. After the main story, you’re sent back to place patrol beacons which you then go back and get your own patrol missions from… No access to the sparrow makes it seem larger than it really is.

Gear: Gearing took 10 steps backwards in TTK. There’s no consistency anymore. For example, the completion of the aforementioned Paradox post-main story arc provided a legendary armor reward. That reward was a measly 220 defense item, despite being a level 40 legendary. Statistically, it was inferior to level 38 rare armor. I got a better rare item from a Cryptarch Engram package when I went to turn in the quest. That same item from the faction vendor is 280 defense rating; earning the item from a drop could give the player an item with a rating anywhere between 220 and 300. This is all due to the new Infusion system: That piddly 220 item can be upgraded with the higher rated rare items by dismantling them and paying a cost of end game grind legendary marks, motes of light, and glimmer, in order to raise the stats. This has caused gearing to be all over the place, making little sense, with rarity and risk taking a back seat to total defense and attack stats (which are the sole items that determine light score and, thus, your ability to do more difficult things). Meanwhile, some legendary gear only has one perk while others have two. There’s almost no rhyme or reason to the gearing system now. And this doesn’t even get into the grindfest, especially if you want to upgrade your old year 1 exotic weapons and armor.

Overall, the only real perks to this expansion are the few quality of life changes: The UI, the quest tracking, the bounty changesm and the new subclasses. Everything else is literally more of the same. I don’t understand these critic reviews because TTK falls victim to many of the same things that got critically panned in Destiny’s first DLC, The Dark Below, especially in terms of poor story and grindy gearing than penalizes long time players. Yes, they added more cutscenes, but that doesn’t mean they’ve made a better product. Far from it.

TTK is another low quality money grab from Bungie and Activision. It's barely worth $30 only offering around 3 hours of new story content and then just having you run missions in the same areas over and over and over again. Go buy MGS5.

    - Depending on the player, the new story missions and Strikes can be very quick to complete. If you are a new player, you can start with the original story and the stories from the Dark Below and House of Wolves dlcs, which will add to the play time, but it is still a short campaign with a mediocre, unengaging story. If you are a fan of games with a long and/or interesting storyline, I would recommend skipping Destiny altogether.
    - Bungie hyped strike-exclusive armor in their Twitch live stream: Only 3 pieces of armor per class across all Strikes. Similarly, preorder bonuses for the game were weak, "Uncommon" tier weapons, which is disappointing.
    - More content/activities have been taken away from the game than was added; this is not an expansion of the game. If you are buying the Collectors edition, or any other edition which bundles TTK with the base game, TDB and HOW dlcs, you are not receiving your money's worth, because all content previous to TTK is irrelevant now. Similarly, if you are a PVP player, be forewarned that without the Taken King, your options for PVP game modes has been severely reduced from what existed only a few weeks ago. On another note, the PVP activities are poorly balanced, with some weapon types and character classes being vastly superior to the others. Bungie has done nearly nothing to alleviate these problems.
    - Poor communication: across all sources, Bungie has failed to adequately communicate with the players and community, often providing misleading teaser information that ends up being a negative change. This has been a problem since the beginning, and will continue for the forseeable future.
    - You will need to be very careful about how you order the DLCs: With the Taken King dlc, you will not be able to play it on another account on same PlayStation, XBox, etc., and all previous DLCs _must_ be downloaded by the same PSN ID/Xbox ID as Taken King. Numerous people have been reporting issues with this, without any response from Bungie.
    - Nolan North: minor annoyance, but the new voice actor for the Ghost (a little companion which tells the "story" of Destiny) is incredibly annoying.

    Thanks for reading :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bungie does it again. They tell the consumer that its totally changing the game and it hasn't.

When they made the claim that it would be as much content as the original vanilla release, I was soo excited to see much needed change. The story mission addition..is 8 quests. It took me about 4 hours to get from 34-40. All the "new content" is either old content rehashed or entirely in the dreadnaught (other than the mission where you go to get the stealth drive.)

The taken Do look cool but there really isnt much to them if you're a) older then 12, or b) if you are remotely intelligent. The mission where you kill oryx is a joke.

The 2.0 update in preparation for the taken king made handcannon stability not even matter like hardlights range stat. Thorn needed to be adjusted, so did TLW but gimping every one and/or reducing magazine size..cmon bungie.

The dreadnaught although huge..is bland and everything looks the same the second time around. We got 4 planets in vanilla release. Now we have a big boring ship where most of the new content drags us to. The new strikes are simple if you know how to stay out of fire/ electricity or how to avoid mobs clearly charging you.

Rift seems fun..if you have a team. I played 15 games or so and if your team sucks you spend the whole time being rambo with the rift while everyone else is playing it like clash. Atleast they added the mercy rule.go bungie!

The change to how light works is kinda cool but I'm not a huge fan of the upgrade armor and weapons change. Atleast you have a halo sword now though*swish swish*. I Do appreciate that players who don't play much can attain max level because before it was heavily swayed towards players who can grind endlessly to get their legendaries/exotics.

For the people complaining about not being able to ascend their old legendaries and exotics...get over it. No game developer in their right mind is going to preemptively kill their new content. The lockout dilema on content Y1 players who haven't purchased ttk..that's crap. My hearts go out to you!

Some of the new pvp maps have a ton of access points for controlzones but there is also a ton of places to fall off the map which is just annoying.

The legendary expansion giving you both previous dlc's , ttk and destiny for 60 $ when year 1 players already payed 60 $ for destiny and 30$ for the season pass is definitely a slap in the face to the loyal

*tin foil hat goes on* I guess being a top review that sheds a negative light on the game is worth removal on metacritic these days. So much for user feedback.

    This is sad indeed.

Thankfully, the internet caches this website so I could pull my review from the dead.

As an addition: piss off whoever deleted this review. You can't silence people legitimate opinions about a product. I'm reducing the score of TTK (which should be a 3/10) to a 2/10...

    Here's the original review:

    ---------

I used to be a huge fan of destiny, I played the game for over 900 hours since day 1. Hell I even played both the alpha and the beta.

    But, it's time to stop.

The business model promoted by Activision is a detriment to the gaming industry. It's already been confirmed that the story of Destiny was scrapped a year before release (check out the lawsuit of Marty O’Donnell vs Bungie if you don't believe me).

Activision has turned what should have been an excellent game, into a cash grab, designed to get players hooked with finely tuned drop rates so that they spend just enough time hunting for gear (which mostly sucks anyway) so that they can start it all over again with the next DLC.

The DLC is NOT WORTH THE PRICE. This is all content that was already seen by players since the original release of the game. The only reason it's getting shipped to you as DLC is because Activision's marketing team thought their customers were too stupid to understand the depth of systems and story that the original vision of Destiny had.

Now they're finally starting to give back what was already made over two years ago, but reworked to fit in the 'new' crap story. All for the small fee of $120 for year 1 players.

How can anyone with any sense stand by and accept this dick slap to the face? If you spend money on this crap and you're a year-1 player, you are a sheep. Activision is laughing at you. You do not think for yourself.

There are tonnes of games on the market that provide you with way more content, way better storytelling, more compelling systems, and better player interaction than Destiny. But idiots will still spend their money for one simple reason: addiction. This game is designed to be addictive, not fun, but addictive. All you're doing is chasing a carrot, looking for your next fix, which is a terrible loot drop that you probably will only use a handful of times. All to repeat the cycle again, until activision decides to lock you out of more content unless you pay them another $20-$40.

    Stop being a sheep.

The ONLY things going for Destiny are:

    - Raids
    - Gunplay / Combat

    That's it.

From this point on in Destiny, if people choose to keep paying, it is their own choice. If they feel they were ripped off a few months from now, they have no one to blame but themselves. “Those that don’t learn...”

It will be interesting to see if there will be a constant cycle of ‘new players’ entering the game and ‘pissed off vets’ leaving the game, throughout Destiny’s planned 10 years. It seems that a lot of Year 1 players have jumped ship.

I wonder if in a year, the people singing Bungie’s praises right now will still be singing the same tune...

To the people giving this content a 0 or a 10, thank you for corrupting what should be a fair assessment of a game.
-The game actually functions, so a 0 is not warranted.
-It is surely NOT a perfect game, so you can't give it a 10.
Somewhere in the middle of those scores, you will find the HONEST reviews of people who have ACTUALLY played the new content.

That is, until they made the Taken King. For a ridiculous price of £39.99 you can download this 'DLC' from the Playstation store. Yep, £40, even though the RRP is $40 (or £26) and for this you get; two hours of story and leveling to 40, 1 new area, 4 new strikes a handful of PVP maps and PVP game mode and some bizarre new gear mechanics, which really isn't a lot if you think about it.
What's that? You don't want to but it? well, good luck playing anything else then because Bungie/Activision in their infinite wisdom have locked out 90% of the game so that if you don't buy it, you are reduced to playing nothing at all. you literally will be reduced to 10% of the things you've spent 100% of your time doing.
Oh, here's another thing; remember all that gear you spent hours and hours grinding and swearing and crying trying to get? well, that's all useless and obsolete now; expect to replace it all with green stuff.
Essentially what I'm getting at here is; Bungie are making everyone pay £39.99 to unlock everything that they've already payed £85 for and have sprinkled on some DLC to try and cover it up.
I've played the taken king for probably about 10 hours now and I am right back at running around the maps, waiting for things to spawn so I can kill them and then rinse and repeat the process. If you haven't brought it yet; don't. It is in no way shape or form worth £40. It isn't worth £20. Don't support this, don't believe the hype because this is a waste.

Pointless Expansion, should have been called The Taken Kontent for locking all the main game content unless you buy the DLC. Bungie has failed us completely

Now.....now they want to drop more content at damn near the price of another full game? For what? Another area? A few more guns, etc? Not worth it. If they knew this was going to be a ten year plan like they say then why not actually plan it out and give the players the full plans for those ten years. Why not have made it a FTP model then? Other games with similar models have worked without alienating their fan base. Awful. Just awful. Expand

Way too many reused assests and a very large chunk of the main story line involves traversing through areas already in the game. Ignoring update 2.0 (which was free) TTK doesn't offer anything much above what the previous expansions offered and seems the higher price is to subsidise the stuff in update 2.0 that everyone supposedly gets for free. The content is an improvement over that found in the base game of Destiny. Unfortunately you have to buy the game twice to unlock it. Furthermore, Bungie has stripped the original game of what little content it has to force players to pay more money to get back the content they already paid for.

This game and the expansion is nothing what it promises. Its the same grind over while other games have gotten it down better. While it may be a tiny improvement it is not worth the $40 price tag this DLC is asking for. Especially when the content and story are just not their. Bungie and Activision really show their greed with this one. sad to see what activision has turned Bungie into.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hype bomb again. The story is mabe slightly better than vanilla. Still, it's only 8 missions, which take places on vanilla maps, warlock stormcaller quest is on... blind watch. We have mission in crotas end raid. Personally I find this DLC a) pay2play b) slap to Y1 players c) totally not worth it's price. The pre order weapon pack is just a green piece of **** Definetely don't buy. Expand

Over hyped garbage, everything is rehashed and a money grab just like the other DLC's except this one costs TWICE as much. Why is this DLC even 20$ extra dollars when it doesn't even add more content than the previous DLC's? Bungie has went from my favorite video game devs to my most hated ever since Destiny happened.

*Don't buy this DLC unless you like playing a gambling simulator for

This is pretty hilarious for an expansion. $40 is a lot of money. The Taken King is decent enough, hell, its definitely Destiny's best expansion... BUT, I feel ripped off that I had to pay $70 just for the DLC... I already own Destiny and Expansion 1&2... I would have thought guys like me would be able to buy the taken king cheaper, as we already spent $120 on the rest of destiny... The content is good (compared to Expansion 1 & 2), the price is not. Should have rather spent my money on MGS: V...

You literally get the game that you have already bought a year ago with two codes for DLC that you have already got and another little code for the supposedly life-changing Taken King. I've tried to justify the marketing strategy for this game but it's painfully obvious that the people in question are using this title to exploit the community into wasting their money. Now, let's say you love The Taken King; you've bought everything related to Destiny in the past year and you've put over 100+ hours into the game: you know for certain that you'll love the new expansion as well. But does it justify the price? Honestly, the answer is no.

Now let me tell you why:

You can get to level 40 in literally 2 hours. You do the new raid for the week, a few nightfalls, which I think will be a lot of fun... but after a week of casual playing... what is left to justify the price?

If, on the other hand, you are new to Destiny, then congratulations! You've got an amazing deal with all the Year 1 content available to you on launch of The Taken King. But for existing players... well, let me just say that it's a slap in the face -- you get the original game that you already have, codes for content that you've already played... and all that you are left with for your hard-earned money is another code for The Taken King.

    It's all so very disappointing. : (

The Taken King addition corrects majority of errors that Destiny had from the beginning and finally brings a larger portion of the story and lot of new content to explore. [Issue#258]

For the first time, Destiny feels like it’s complete. It’s not perfect, far from it in fact, and I still can’t entirely disagree when they speak of the package itself as bad. But I’ve also been unable to put it down for the past month I’ve played it.
