There is a ton of new content in this game. After completing the main story line, there are at least 6 new quests that open, continuing on side story's that were hinted at in the first year and providing a lot more playability. The story telling is vastly improved, both in the new cutscenes (of which there are a lot) and in the voice acting. Nathan Fillion and Nolan North provide great dialogue, which is funny on many occasions.

The Dreadnaught is also huge. There are the main areas to be explored, but the ship contains numerous little tunnels and areas to explore, each having some type of chest or secret mechanic to discover which opens up new rewards. Court of Oryx provides interesting new play mechanics, there are 4 new strikes to play through, two on the dreadnaught, one on earth and one on Venus. Vog and Crota areas now have story missions attached to them, so you can explore those areas if you didn't have a chance to raid in year 1. Other reviewers mistakenly say that much of the story recycles old maps, but that's simply not the case, especially for those who had trouble finding raiding groups. Mayhem and Rift are great additions to the Crucible playlist and there are a number of new maps to play on as well. Mayhem might be the best addition that comes with Taken King.

The removal of light level to reach the experience cap at lvl 40 is a great improvement. Reaching level 40 will unlock the content, but light level is still needed to beat those bosses. This structure makes a lot more sense since it doesn't lock out content now for landing change weapons. Playing through harder levels becomes easier with better weapons, but it's still possible to play that content without the best gear. It's a much fairer system. Not perfect yet, but a lot closer.

This is easily a game that could have sold for $60 that only costs $40. It's clear from others reviewing that they either didn't play TTK at all or didn't finish the main story mission. This is what Destiny should have been when it was released a year ago. I'm excited to see what it becomes moving forward. It is certainly a much more rewarding experience than it was before.

The taken king meets its core player half way with an actual story, great new gear and weapons, rewarding those who grind away, and much needed balance to the weapons system. As much as i love the new much awaited dlc, its not exactly perfect. Some areas are reused and for the price tag of 40 dollars i would like to expect completely new areas, if you plan correctly you can reach its new level cap in a matter of minutes which kinda defeats the purpose of the gameplay imo, and you cant help but feel that this should have have been the complete from day one.

    PROS:
    fun
Worth the buy if dedicated fan
    great weapon and amor system
    grinding is more rewarding
    meeting demands to current fanbase
    Visuals are awesome
about an additional 7-10 hours of additional gameplay
    a more balanced game

    CONS:
    year 1 exotics nerf
price of dlc of important content that should have been added since day one
    reuse of same areas
price of dlc for year one players total $160 spent with tax

Overall a great buy and fun game.

Bungie has done a lot of work to go back and overhaul their game to make it a more coherent and enjoyable experience from level 1 through to level 40. Brand new enemies and classes add new and exciting combat mechanics. With enemies that split in half or blast you with shields the dynamic of PVE changes and I'm excited to see what the new strike and raid bosses have in store. The new PVP modes and maps change up the competitive play as well giving me incentive to go back with my clan mates to bust skulls.

Folks are going to complain about lack of content and to some extent they are correct. Does that mean Taken King deserves that 1 or 0 on Metacritic? Absolutely not. The game is mechanically fantastic and the new additions are well thought out and implemented. Bungie actively listens to its player base and trys to make their requests happen and for that I applaud them. Veterans of the game will love this expansion and folks who have hated it will continue to hate. For those of you new to the game this is a great time to jump in and is a steal if you are buying it all in a bundle. If you haven't played it yet I highly recommend you try it out.

The story is a lot more coherent now and has humor too. Really enjoyed playing this. It really seems to be a lot more self-aware than any of the previous DLCs.

Nathan Fillion helped Bungie knock this one out of the park!

TTK is a great DLC, 4 new strikes, a new raid, re-worked Story mechanic with additional story - now quest based, new weapons (SWORDS!) 1 new subclass per race, new PvP modes, new PvP maps.
Yes, for a DLC its steep at £40 but I know I will be playing this way longer that I would be playing a DLC from any other game some in terms of game time per £, no problem.

From what I have played, the DLC has made the Destiny experience significantly better. The cutscenes have become less serious and more humorous. I cannot wait for the King's Fall raid.

You can play with your friends or by yourself. Though I admit it's more fun with some buddies. The loot you get now compared to year one Destiny is greatly increased and it is usually gear that is useful. This game gets better with age. Although it may seem a bit pricey to some people. But to me it's better then paying monthly to play a huge mmorpg. I'd rather pay for an expansion every 3 to 6 months then a monthly fee. I also like it better then shooters like Call Of Duty, and Battlefield. However I am more of a PvE kind of person and only dabble in PvP shooters. I enjoy the story missions cause while yes you replay the same missions. But with the loot you get, no 2 play throughs' are exactly the same. It let's you test out what weapons you like and don't like. And the same goes for armor. While the only negative thing I have is like I said before is most of the environments are the same. But it isn't a deal breaker with just how smooth the gameplay is for me. So if you want a good time with friends or just by yourself pick up Destiny: The Taken King. It's pretty awesome. The first 15 minutes of the Taken King expansion are better than the entire 'story' of the base game released last September. The new enemies, the Taken, are more than simply re-skins. They have their own unique animations and attacks that separate them from their counterparts and even have liabilities and attacks that mimic our Guardians' supers. Couple this with a HUGE new patrol area located on the Dreadnaught in Saturn's Rings, new PVP game modes such as Rift (Capture the Flag) and Mayhem (Supers all the time TDM), a new take on Strikes, an enhanced loot system, and a slew of new weapons and armor and you truly have Destiny's most fully thought out, immersive, and engaging expansion to date. This new iteration of Destiny is a massive improvement in quality in all aspects, finally making Destiny the top notch title it always should have been. Destiny has become the victim of a video game hate culture. Which is extremely unfortunate, because The Taken King expansion is actually a really great experience. Everything from the small changes, to the large game mechanic revamps help to completely revitalize the base game.

When I say that Destiny is the VICTIM of hate culture, I mean that you will most likely see considerably more bad user reviews, than you will favorable ones, it is the game that is fun to hate on. Most of the bad reviews don't actually present any real or justified reasons for the low scores, they are just blind hate.

But if you are still reading this, then you deserve to know why The Taken King is deserving of a high score.

    - Level design: Most of the areas in the story missions are brand new areas, and those areas feature some cool level design that is markedly different to the story missions before it. There are some fun new platforming mechanics which make things fun. The atmosphere in some of the levels is really intense.

    - Further on the story mission design: A lot has been said about Destiny reusing old areas for missions, but one thing MUST be noted about this. The Patrol areas (the main areas of each planetary location) are the Hub areas of those worlds. Each hub area connects to various sections of that world. Almost all the story missions in the game DO in fact feature entirely new map areas, despite what people say, however many of them may start with you spawning in a familiar location, for example, the Cosmodrome has a handful of spawning locations, and you spawn there for every mission no matter where that mission takes you. In TTK this isn't as much of an issue as you are spawned as close to your objective as is feasible in the game (ie it's not logical for your character to spawn inside a building, as you can't land your ship inside a building).

    - Cinematics: The new cinematics that are added to the game are awesome! The between mission cut scenes significantly flesh out the NPC characters in ways that were absolutely needed. It added an atmosphere to the game which is awesome.

    - Villain: For the first time in Destiny, they made the villain a character in the game. Rather than another enemy to kill. I actually FELT the anxiousness and danger that Oryx presents, and every time he shows up, you feel his hate.

    - Weapon Foundries: The addition of in-game weapon manufacturers has meant there are weapon designs which are much more unique in design and operate in fascinating ways. No longer are we seeing random weapon designs that all function the same.

    - Your story: In TTK, the world of Destiny recognizes your character. They acknowledge what you have done over the course of Year 1. Countless times throughout the game, your achievements are noted by the various NPC's. When Oryx arrives in the solar system, YOU are the Guardian they send out to meet him. Only you, the legend, can overcome such a power opponent.

    - Characters: As mentioned above, the NPC's in Destiny haven't really been fleshed out much previously, TTK tries to resolve that, by making those characters the focus of the story. It pays off brilliantly. Cayde-6 is hilarious, his banter with Eris is perfect, Commander Zavala and Ikora Ray are both interesting characters, and Oryx is a very imposing enemy.

    - The bad: There isn't much bad to say about an expansion which improves on almost every aspect of the base game. The overall Story arc with Oryx is too short for his character. He is by far the best villain in Destiny, and really does have that typical TV show villain feel to him, the kind that you build up to fighting over the entire season of the show, with the Raid being the final episode of the season, but it feels like a 13 episode season, rather than a full 23 episode. That's not to say those 13 episodes aren't awesome, because they are! but it's sad to see such an amazing enemy be dealt with so quickly.

Summary: The Taken King knocks it out of the park. It improves almost every aspect of the Destiny game, while keeping those fundamental game pay mechanics that made it so much fun to begin with. As a game, it isn't perfect, though TTK has shown that the true potential of Destiny is not as far off as we thought. I thoroughly look forward to where Bungie take the game over the course of Year 2, and into the following years.

Another bad thing, is knowing that we won't see such an influx of content until Destiny 2, as the following DLC 3 and 4 will likely be considerably smaller in size.

Simply put, there is no game on the market that comes anywhere close to what Destiny does. As a game design enthusiast, I feel they just got so much right in this title.

    - The three weapon load out is a golden triangle. Switching between primary, secondary and heavy weapons in pitched battles feels clutch. You have options, but not too many. The power level for each feels highly appropriate. The available combinations to experiment with are numerous. They pioneered this tight + controlled weapon loadout concept in the original Halo and the design language remains strong in Destiny.

    - To continue with the point above, the gameplay and pace for an FPS feels perfect to me. Having the gunfighting component complimented with melee, grenades, and super we see that another golden triangle emerges. Tying stats to these skills was smart. Most all of they make your guardian truly feel *powerful* and unique. The RPG component of this game really has merit and doesn't detract from the FPS elements in the slightest. The skill trees remain fairly balanced between and among classes.

    - While the story was definitely...lacking in plot and exposition, the level + world design has been consistently spot on. Every area feels textured, detailed and respectively thought out. So many beautiful vistas. Travelling through the world on your sparrow can be a pure joy - providing a welcome break from the fettered pace of combat. Another beautiful and under-appreciated design feature.

    - The sound design in this game is the best I've ever come across. No title matches Destiny my honest, humble opinion when it comes to sound effects. Certain exotics are just sound addictive. Sparrows sound amazing. The hugely varied enemies all have amazing triggered sounds upon death and it compliments the FPS mechanics perfectly. You just want to keep popping off enemies.

    - They finally added meaningful multiplayer to an FPS. Competitive PvP is great and all, but what really makes Destiny sweet is the strikes and raids. These are the bread and butter of Destiny and really what make it stand apart from other games on the market. I've been a huge proponent of cooperative gameplay ever since Halo 1 truly pioneered split-screen play. Playing with other humans against AI just makes it so much more involving and fun, it's hard to put a finger on it. The loot from these activities is a huge draw that keeps you coming back for more, reminds me very much of Diablo 2. Completing your first raid feels like a huge accomplishment in teamwork. The feeling is really only matched by a handful of MMORPGs. Bungie deserves all the credit in the world for bringing this not only to FPS players, but to console users as well.

    - The lore is captivating and the entire premise of the world is highly alluring. I love how this is a science fiction title based in our own solar system, not some randomly named star-system we could care less about. The combination of familiarity and wonder really comes together for a backdrop that is truly unmatched for the vast majority of game titles. This is a game I willingly invest myself in because it's just so damn cool. Coolest game I've played in the last decade. This is obviously a highly subjective opinion but I just had to say it.

It had a decent story that was passable and at least something to care about. It reworked its quest and stories and made them more clever. The raid was not as complex as Vault of Glass, but not as simple and exploitative like Dark Below, making the middle ground work well and having a blast sending Oryx back to hell.

The reworks and changes made from the first year dramatically bumped up the quality of the game's overall MMORPG-like nature. It carried alot of the old problems first year Destiny had, but made more far more optimistic for Destiny's future. It was a good time and I enjoyed it the most of Destiny's first three years.

The original year 1 Destiny was good. Hitting level 20 was like hitting a brick wall with a grind fest to get the right gear and level up. Enter the Taken King ... improved almost every aspect of the game. Bursting with content, a major improvement on story and cutscenes and the grind is still there but in a much more tolerable entertaining package.

The Taken adds a whole new mechanic to the story. Bounties have become more organized and easy to access and turn in. The vault system has had a much needed update. As a primary PVP player the new weapon balances is great. People are venturing out and using auto rifles for once. The new maps are very balanced and fun to play and the new game modes are a much needed change. On the negative side, the loot system still seems unfinished. Legendaries are about as rare as exotics were in year one. The new Supers are extremely unbalanced. Sunbreaker is far more powerful than the other two. Voidwalker is very underwhelming for PVP, but useful for PVE players. Swords in PVP are way overpowered!!!

Overall, The Taken King is an amazing update to Destiny. However, its not perfect. There is still a lot of things that need to be fixed. I have a feeling that Bungie will be rolling out small patches over the course of The Taken King to balance everything out.

The new story is fun to play and is MUCH more rewarding than the Destiny Y1 story. Weapons are more unique in sounds, looks, and colours. While we were forced to leave behind our old gear, we were able to get new gear rather easy. Once you finish with the main story there is plenty of quests to do so you don't burn out on content. After the main story you get access to the quests for the Exotics "The Chaperone" and "Boolean Gemini". There are now weekly Crucible bounties for another chance at a new Exotic piece of gear. The loot system is improved, an example of this is I got an FWC Shader after 30+ levels of motes and other trash and a Ship in the package after that. The Cryptarchs now sell Legendary Engrams, with even more chances at Exotic Loot. The new leveling system is based off of XP and Loot. You get to Level 40 through XP and equip better gear to get more light, however, light does not affect your level, but it does affect your strength in-game. Level 41 enemies aren't as big of a problem with this new system as, say, a level 32 doing Crota's End Hard mode. Taken King is an amazing expansion to an already insanely fun and addicting game. Ok so... lets clear something up first this game is without a shadow of a doubt the best expansion for Destiny so far.

I have read through a lot of this reviews and also opinions of my friends list on my console and quite frankly it annoys me to see so many people give a poor reflection of the game without actually experiencing all it has to offer.

YES you level up to lvl40 fast, YES the main story line is still short...

HOWEVER all these poor reviews come from people that do the main story get to lvl40 then stop. They then fail to see that there is actually 5 times the amount of side quests that provide some very challenging experiences to gain extra xp and rewards. There are an extra 3 strikes to TTK also to further expand.

I'm your usual weekly reset player who does all the weekly heroic, Nightfall, Raids, PoE etc all in the first day then the rest of the week NOTHING. However that is NOT the case with the TTK.

    LIGHT LEVEL...

This is what people fail to see because they are used to the old level system. Just because you've hit EXPERIENCE level 40 doesn't mean you are by any means levelled up. By level 40 you are usually around lvl200 light, now to access the Nightfall you are recommended to be level 280 light. Now to put that into perspective, it took me and a fireteam 2 solid days of playing all day to reach 280 light.

But it doesn't stop there as that's just the access required to attempt the nightfall... every time you finish a quest a new one starts but not only that there are equal amounts of quests in the crucible too. X amount of kills with x ability/weapon. X amount of win in X crucible modes... The whole thing has been designed to STOP repetitive gameplay. Stop the usage of the same weapons over and over. The new infuse system makes you pay attention to EVERY weapon. Blues have higher attack than a lot of legendaries because legenadaries have better perks. Find the Leg you want then infuse your blue to make the favoured perks more powerful.

It really ANGERS me to see so many poor reviews from people that haven't even given the game the chance to see ALL it now offers. TTK has 5 times the content that VANILLA destiny had to offer.

Seriously guys think about it not as an expansion, yes its £40 but that's cheaper than the original vanilla destin and has 5 times the content. This IS destiny 2.0 its its own standalone game.

I challenged my doubters on my friends list to play beyond the main story and experience the extra gameplay on offer and now their opinions have changed.

Seriously me and my dedicated players have had so much more fun with TTK than we every have on destiny...

Its taken up that much time to play TTK that weve not had a single chance to even concider our usual raids and PoE for xp gains.

SERIOUSLY this has restored all my faith in Bungie and Destiny. For £40 you are seriously getting so much more than JUST an expansion. Don't listen to all the haters. Haters gonna hate. If you enjoyed vanilla destiny up until that "Wall" of nothing left to do then trust me you are going to LOVE TTK.

STOP focussing on the greed of activision as I honestly feel for the content we are getting this time TTK is worth EVERY penny. The HoW yes that was over priced and ridiculous.

    TTK is truly something special...

Suffice it to say that Bungie finally got their act together and the result is phenominal. The Taken King honestly elevates Destiny to where we might have expected it to be a year ago. Whatever your opinion of the previous year, the game is now a classic Bungie game, with strong characters, killer cutscenes, fantastic worlds to explore (including the real mysteries of the Dreadnaught), and some absolutely killer multiplayer.

The cost to game ratio here is phenomenal. Even considering that I bought both the Legendary Edition of the base game and the Collector's of Taken King ($240 Australian all up!), I've gotten over 500 hours of play time across all my characters. That's 50c per hour. About $4.50 per week.

The new strikes and campaign are much more engaging and enjoyable. It feels as if there is actually purpose in doing things in the game, mostly due to the rewards.
Rewards are so much more satisfying now.
What you earn reflects more on your light level and the engrams you earn are now fair.
    - Rare engrams are Rare items
    - Legendary engrams are legendary items or exotics. Nothing less
    - There's plenty more loot drops. Get grinding!

It looks like Bungie finally have the time to make it the game they want it to be. There is so much more content to keep everyone busy and you will find yourself on it for hours without realising.
There will always be haters on this game for what ever the reason. Just try this out if you had interest in the original.
At the end of the day, we know what Bungie are capable of. They've expressed this in The Taken King.

I did feel misled that the preorder indicated Vanguard and Skolas weapons were only available for purchase with Glimmer at the Vanguard armory and were useless since the first weapons you get free are better. Also, my son beat the Taken King in less than 6 hours using his original guardian. (Planning to use a new L25 Hunter myself to up the challnge.). The quality of this content is much better as there are actual cutscenes to build the story and new elements like platforming (albeit nothing like a Tomb Raider). There is of course more content in PvP Modes, Strikes, Raids, etc. and new weapons, although I do not understand why all of the existing weapons were nuked to such weak levels, other than to make players grind more. For $40 this is a fun add-on, should have been $20. Expand

    ***WHY I'M GIVING TTK 10/10***

Bungie listened to year one players and created an expansion that absolutely addresses many of the concerns we had about vanilla destiny. The original campaign (if you can call it that) is more coherent and tolerable. It took me a while to get used to the new ghost voice, but it's actually pretty good. And the ghost is way more useful than before. You can now scan items in game and your ghost will give you a backstory or information on that item.

The TTK campaign is fantastic. It's what we wanted from the beginning, and it's what we got. Much of the credit goes to a 10/10 performance by Nathon Fillion (Firefly). He did a stellar job voicing Cayde-6 and adds a much needed quirky, humorous tone to the campaign (the new ghost does this as well). I got about 6 hours of gameplay from the new campaign.

Aside from the added campaign, I know I'll get hundreds of hours from the new strikes, raid, Court of Oryx, Rift, Mayhem, etc. The new strikes are much more dynamic. Court of Oryx is fun and challenging. I haven't played the raid yet, but when I do, I will update this review. They added 8 new maps in PvP that are fantastic. Rift and Mayhem are loads of fun!

TTK additionally improves on vanilla destiny by adding quests, improving the currency system, expanding/organizing the vaults, and more. They also balanced the weapons and subclasses, so I'm no longer getting blink-shotgunned by everyone and their mother. Grenades are better balanced. The Defender bubble no longer gets popped by everything. It's pretty awesome. All welcome changes in my book.

    ***ADDRESSING COMMON COMPLAINTS***

For those complaining about the pricing "scheme", you should really take a look at the content you're getting compared to other games. Take COD for example. You have to pay (at least) $60 per year, and you don't get to keep your characters! You have to pay extra for all the new maps and whatever other DLCs they offer, which means you can easily spend $200 in two years (even the day one destiny players have only paid around $140 so far, the price you pay for being an early adopter). The legendary edition of The Taken King offers vanilla destiny (selling for about $20 now) and 3 DLCs (collectively selling for about $75 now) for only $60. Two years worth of content. The Taken King expansion itself comes with 3 new subclasses, 8 new maps (some games charge a lot for new maps...), tons of new gear and weapons, a new raid, 3 new strikes, and 6 hours (for me) of new campaign that is actually rather good.

A lot of people seem to be mad because they can't do the weekly events in vanilla destiny anymore. I don't see a problem with that. That's end game content, and there's now a new end. When you bought vanilla destiny, you bought the missions, strikes, PvP, all that good stuff. The weekly events are features. You still have your content. Actually, you're better off than day 1. They improved the vaults, made the campaign more tolerable, added the ability to collect ghosts, added quests, and on and on.

As for those complaining about how Bungie does not care about their year one players, this is absolutely not true! The Taken King expansion addresses many, many issues that year 1 players complained about vanilla destiny. TTK is what it is because of year one players. On top of that, year one players received a lot of neat in game items (I got a legendary ghost, sparrow, ship, and gear AND an exotic weapon that I didn't have, among other things). For those that are mad about having to hunt for new gear and weapons, uhhh....isn't that the fun of the game? Do you really want to use Thorn and Gjallarhorn for 2 years? There is a new enemy, and you're gonna need new weapons and gear to get stronger and beat him. Pretty simple.

With 3 new sub-classes to play through, the introduction of humor (yes that's right humor) between the council members and quests that are actually engaging and entertaining draw you into the game and want to keep playing.

Bungie, the makers behind Destiny, have already released statements stating that they are working to improve players rewards during world interactions. There is even talks of quests coming out with exotic rewards! These are all great things to keep the average player engaged for hours on end.

The real question still remains, after completing the new line of quests and playing through the strike playlist a few hundred times, is there enough content to justify the hefty price tag associated with this expansion? I think the only answer that makes since at this stage in the game is, it depends.

What other content is Bungie going to introduce under the umbrella of this expansion free of cost? Will that content include extending the story line? Or simply new quests for new gear etc? Only time can tell.

What I can say for sure, is that after getting game and experiencing what it has to offer, I am pleased with the new direction Destiny has decided to take. I just hope that the developers provide much more content free of charge under this release package before introducing more paid DLC!

    On a side note....

Many reviews have expressed there extreme hate for Bungie's Destiny fueled by the Activation greed train. I feel the users and there frustration, you pay $60 for the base game only to get a story lacking shooter with a few strikes, one raid and limited amount of content only to find out that you need to spend another $35 to get the story that should have came with game from the get go.

Alright, ill admit, when I received the bill for the expansion after paying so much for the content I was a little annoyed... but then I looked at Call of Duty! $70 for the game and at least 5 map packs (thats only maps folks) for $15 a release.... $145 right there. Or World of Warcraft which releases an expansion for $50 and expects to be paid $15 a month, every month to play that expansion.

Then I look at games like Guild Wars 2, which charges you $50 for the game when it releases and nothing ever again... but hey guess what? They have micro transactions to earn income along the way. And lets be honest, tons of people pay for those micro transactions because they are invested in the game.

The point here being, it is a lot of money to fork over but that is the gaming industry. If you want to play it you have to pay for it. Developing the stuff is not free and takes time and money. The only thing we as gammers and the community of the games can ask for is some love and respect in the quality and quantity of content released.

So there you have it folks, the recent expansion to Destiny, The Taken King is without a doubt a great addition to the series that will provide many hours of game play through various avenues presented throughout the game.

The Taken King is brilliant update to the game and I highly recommend anyone thinking of playing, they should do it. Ignore the negative comments.. this game has been changed for the better.
I now care about the characters in game, Cayde-6 is funny and Eris Morn a nut case. The cut scenes remind me of Bungies Halo days. The new story telling is a big step in the right direction and I am looking forward to the next installment.

This expansion has in my honest opinion boosted Destiny to a whole new level. The story kept me on the edge of my seat wanting more, the ghost plays a more active role, Cayde-6 added a much needed source of comedy, and I couldn't stop playing! That last part is a big one for me. I've started playing several games over the past year, but none of them pulled me in like TTK has. I work a full time job and I've already put over 20 hours into the game since launch.

Lot's of people have issues with the fact that all your old guns and stuff are useless now. Well, I have been an MMO gamer for years and this is nothing new to me, so, it doesnt bother me in the slightest. I love the fact that we are getting more powerful weapons and have more to work towards again, but that type of play style isn't for everyone.

The Dreadnaught!!! Easily Destiny's most mysterious, action filled, fun zone yet. Full of puzzles and activities that will keep you running around it for hours, and it presents challenges to survive just running through it. The Cabal and the Hive and Taken are gunning it out all over the place, so there are moments when there are just a TON of guys in this area you just ran into and they all decide to attack the guardian and his/her ghost! It's fun!

The MAIN story line only takes around 5 to 6 hours (with some exploration thrown in it took me a little over 5). It could take less if you just rushed through it without stopping to actually enjoy the story. However, having said that.. I LOVED the story line, and ITS NOT OVER FOLKS! As soon as I finished the "main" story line other quests opened up...some of these quests I'm still working on completing. That's much more than 5 hours of content, and the Raid (which is still a part of the story) has not opened up yet. Like I said I've put over 20 hours into the game already and I've yet to run out of new stuff to do. Yea some of it can be quite grindy, but show me a game with MMO tendencies that's not grindy.

SWORDS!!! Finally got my sword last night and I'm very excited they put these into the game! Some people are complaining about the way the guns and stuff look, but I personally loved the design of things so far in this expansion. The guns look and feel great, the taken look great and their fighting mechanics add a whole new level of challenge, the Dreadnaught looks great, the new subclasses are alot of fun! Overall this expansion was well designed.

I understand being disappointed about losing your old weapons and maybe even that the "main" story line didnt take longer, but this expansion does not deserve 0/10 score...not even kinda close. Great expansion! Definitely worth the $40 I paid for it.

Side Note: I've read several of the low rated scores and it sounds like some of these people havent even played the expansion...they just came in here to complain about how big bad Bungie mistreated them and is out to get their wallets...Destiny has made leaps and bounds of improvement with this expansion and Bungie is actually listening to the players and making changes that have been requested.

PVP at last is getting more complex maps, few new modes, new squad-based bounties, new objectives.

By now I played almost only PVP and i enjoyed a lot the new maps, now more tactical.

If you have Destiny and you are waiting for November big ones (Fallout 4, BO3 or Battlefront ) this is a must buy.

The new mechanics and levelling system provide complete overhauls to the gameplay experience which vastly increase the pleasure gained from continuous play. Items such as the three of coins now allow players to work to tip the odds in their favour for gaining the new exotic gear available and the adaptive loot system provides a very interesting parallel to the previous stagnant gear type attack and defence values. Being able to go from receiving 200 light legendaries at the start of play and working yourself up to 290+ rare loot give a greater sense of progression than the previous grind for a legendary for each slot/marks to buy gear and have all that gear be as good as it can be.

The new enemy race, the taken, provide a refreshing new opposing force and marks the largest collection of new unit types to be added since launch. The vastly varied and interesting mechanics present for each of these unit types provide a new playing/learning experience similar to the first run through of the previous raids upon your first story quest line experience.

Story. The "main" story line is something a lot of people are complaining about in their overly negative reviews. Admittedly people who rush through the starting story quest line will finish it in a matter of hours however those who take the time to experience the game will receive much greater enjoyment. (for example my 3 man fire team spent 8 hours on our first run through (and no we didn't wipe much except for when experiencing new mechanics i.e. First Oryx fight)). The first oryx fight rounds off the story nicely with a challenging (if set to hard when still ~230-240 light) skirmish with numerous interesting mechanics that players much learn to understand and combat before being able to progress. Now, as I (and many others) have said, this quest line is rather short (~6 hours). However this is just one of the numerous new storyline quest lines that, unlike others have stated, nicely lead the players into the basic lore behind each of the new strikes. Overall I played around 40 hours of story before entering the raid on the raid release without repeating anything other than daily challenges and all on one character. I have currently played around 130 hours of the taken king and found it well worth my money as only one of my three (34 with bounty prep for day one) characters has completed all the new story quest lines. This bring my game playtime to just under 2000 hours.... No game but halo and space engineers has been as enjoyable or re-playable for me as this game.

Finally a Destiny that somehow has ton of things to do. I've still have ~18 quests to finish and new gears to get to reach the end game content once again (I'm completely blue equipped, lol). Yes, the level cap is 40, but the struggle, once again, is the light level, but now with a renewed formula.
"Legacy" items are now pretty much useless. Time to raid them all again. At least, there's some good reason to keep cutting through the raids once more.
Keep in mind, Destiny is, since the release, a grindsh FPS with group-oriented end game content. That didn't change at all.

Being a Year 1 player who has put easily over 100 hours into this game, I can safely say that I have mixed feelings on this expansion due to the treatment of all Year 1 content. I booted up the game for the first time yesterday after the lengthy ver. 2.0 update and was treated to two amazing gifts during the introductory Veteran's Walk mission for Year 1 players: the only two exotic weapons (Monte Carlo and Thorn) that I hadn't grabbed in my first year of playing. Much to my dismay, however, I then noticed that the attack values for these weapons was equal to (or lower than) blue and green drops specific to The Taken King. I spent so much time playing this game and forgoing playing other great games in my collection just to amass this amazing arsenal of weapons and now they're all basically worthless? Consider me bummed.

The content itself in Taken King is great, though I wish there was more of it. The missions are great, the new enemy types and subclasses are great additions, and I can't say enough about how much I love the new Quest Tracking system. The downside is that after just two hours of dedicated play I was able to go from level 34 to level 36, leading me to believe it won't be long until I hit the new level cap and again run out of a reason to keep playing the game beyond checking in once a week for the weekly Heroic and Nightfall strikes.

I enjoy PvP and this game has a LOT to offer someone who loves competitive shooters. The actual gunplay is as tight as what you would expect from the developers of Halo, and the weapons all feel and sound great (something which Bungie has always done well in spades). There's new maps and the weapon classes have all been either buffed or nerfed in significant ways for the 2.0 update. Love it or hate it, the PvP in Destiny at least manages to stay fresh through constant monitoring and updating by the team at Bungie.

I'm not going to delve too deeply into the Bungie or Activision shaming here, for their scrapping of the story or constant barrage of $20-$40 updates for content that should have (for all intents and purposes) shipped with the main game back in September of 2014. What I will say is this: Underneath all the controversy and trolling surrounding this game is a great shooter that deserves to be played. If you are new to Destiny and are considering making the plunge, you get the best deal of anyone by jumping into the game in Year 2. Those who haven't invested a significant amount of time in the Year 1 gameplay won't be disappointed with all of their amassed gear being nerfed, and you'll get a more cohesive storyline and better leveling up system to play around with.

I really am not a Destiny fan boy, I haven't played it for nearly a year and decided to come back for the Taken King and I don't regret it at all. There is almost enough content their to warrant the £40 DLC but for new players, this is worth every penny.

The new areas, quests, strikes, raid and other updates make me feel like this game has finally had some personality injected into it.

the taken king is the first good dlc that destiny has had the story is actually interesting and very dark with characters that have some depth rather than no depth at all like in the previous dlc's to bad the missions are a bit cookie cutter but fun none the less.

    Pros
    * Story, Game play and fun factor are all up there. Graphics are pretty impressive and so far I'm not getting bored by any of the new content.
*Mechanics are being changed ( this can be a con but for me its a pro) - it shows the the designers don't pick one formula and stick with it no matter what. New expansions generally also brings about changes to the game. I see a lot of reviews here bashing on the end game content of year 1 being useless but this is a general trend for most MMO style games. ---->> Be prepared for this on the next expansion. I can almost guarantee another release down the road with a raised level cap and a change in mechanics.

    Cons:
*Tutorials and explanations are lacking - there could be a lot more done on explaining some of concepts to new comers.
*New expansion blocks out users unless you buy it which is a really bad decision to make. They could have done what most MMOs do and just block the new content from users who don't have TTK and modify the stats on everyone's gear to keep things balanced. But just to play devil advocate there is no monthly fee going to Bungie so expect similar releases that you have to pay down the road.

Destiny the Taken King is what the original destiny should have been, and thats a very good thing. Lets list off the pros and cons of this very divisive game a put these 12 year old "user review" trolls to rest.

    Pros:

    1. Story. Destiny TTK contains 5+ story missions, but thats not all. These levels contain excellent voice acting, top notch cutscenes and great mechanics. These missions are gaming at it's best, these even give halo a run for it's money. Not only of they feature tight gameplay, but they feature great fleshed out characters and even a bit of humor. Thats one thing that destiny needed desperately, a good story and as shocking as it may sound, TTK has a great story with excellent missions to tell it. After the main quest is over there are plenty of extra missions to play which explain more of the side stories within the destiny universe.

    2. Strikes. For those new to destiny there are larger missions in which you have a specific target you must take out. In the past these "targets" or boss battles where known for simply being bullet sponges, but I'm glad to say thats a thing of the past. All boss battle's either contain unique mechanics the boss himself has or the the battle ground itself is dynamic and changes. There are 3 or 4 lengthy strikes within this expansion and there all very fun in my opinion. If not watch some lets plays if your skeptical.

    3. Crucible. PVP multiplayer is top notch, it's Halo but tighter and higher focus on verticality. It has both a balanced mode, which is the normal, and a purposefully unbalanced mode named the iron banner that comes once a month and gives out great rewards. There are plenty of modes bungie has given players for PVP gameplay, but there are some which standout such as the Destiny classic control which involves players capturing points of interest and defending them from their opponents. Rift is also another new mode of which is pretty much capture the flag but given a destiny spin, and i must say it's very entertaining. There is also a type of gameplay called mayhem, which consists of you having a very fast "super" refill time. Pretty much explosions everywhere, very fun indeed. There are also "infernal" modes of every single one of these modes that simply turn off the radar, making PVP 10 times harder than usual, but it's tons of fun. There are more than 25 different and fun multiplayer maps of which 8 of them are brand new with the The Taken King.

    4. Guns and Gear.... way too much to talk about... i mean there is tons and tons of new gear and guns including brand new exotic weapons (pretty much the best guns in the game with unique integrated mechanics). What I can tell you is that YOU WILL find a gun and setup thats suits your needs.

    Cons

    1. Old Players. Those that do not buy the taken king will almost be forced to buy it. Destiny might be a sudo MMO of which you don't pay a monthly fee for, but every 3-4 months you will need to buy the expansion or have content locked to you within the vanilla game. So just consider Destiny like a strange game of which you have to pay every 3-4 months to play. Some might consider this off-putting. Something to consider.

    2. Once your done with the content you must replay it to get more rewards, some do not like the grind that Destiny offers, but it would also not be seen as a negative. I and other players actually enjoy the grind, we play a couple hours everyday to get more loot and items to acquire and collect exotic armor pieces and weapons. Though some might find this to be a negative.

Overall I would say the taken king gets a 10 out of 10 in my book. It's exactly the game I'm looking for, but i understand that others might consider it lower. Though with the raid coming which is always the best part of destiny, your opinion on the game might change drastically. I would say for your regular casual Destiny TTK gets a 8/10, but if your looking forward to the grind, collecting exotics, and playing with friends and raiding on the weekends, then boy are you going to love this game. guaranteed you will get way more than your moneys worth. Either way you will like this game. So don't listen to the ridiculous 0/10 and 1/10 reviews. Sadly the trolls never sleep. and Destiny is just another example of how much hatred and childish behaviors there is in the gaming hate culture. Hope my review was helpful. :) (BTW the base game without grind is about 10-20 hours for all content not just main quest, main quest is like 6 hours).

For the first time, Destiny feels like it’s complete. It’s not perfect, far from it in fact, and I still can’t entirely disagree when they speak of the package itself as bad. But I’ve also been unable to put it down for the past month I’ve played it.
