This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kojima messed up this time. Even the spoilers on the discord before were much more fun and reasonable than the actual game.
    1. The game has a strong personal style of Kojima, perhaps he would like to control 100% of those characters’ performance, but this only leads to a result, that actors' understanding of the role are not the same as what they behaved.
    2. There's a huge gulf between the game-playing and the story plot. For a long time, it’s almost like "You can be rewarded to play as long as you've done your chores", rewarding some story after a dull (or not, depending on whether you likes to be packhorse or not) play.
    3. What the game was told, is a totally catastrophe, or say, this game has almost no narrative at all. All stories are told by everyone’s "Sam, you need to know this", even about the characters themselves! All the characters, Fragile, Deadman, Mama, Heartman and DieHard Man. Can you imagine a victim dictating her own tragic past? This is stupid.
    4. Character building is also terrible, which is the consequence of poor storytelling. All the characters dictate to the player what they are, and with too many unnecessary settings (like Deadman being a Cyborg, so what?) , it shows that Kojima is trying to instill in the player "what's the character like" Without leaving any space. Oh and besiedes, even the main theme is connection, there is no connection between most of the characters each other. They are just connecting to Sam.
    5. Comparing to others, Sam, however, is not shown much in this game. Too little characterization of Sam, and the lack of describing the relationship between Sam and Emilie throughout the story, leads to a serious discrepancy between Emilie's character and the player's understanding, and so at the climax of the game, I, and many of my friends are baffled by the act we must do to continue this game, by hugging Emilie.
    6. The main story of the game does not exist any choice, with awful characterization lead to an unconvincing end. This makes the game itself like a movie, a one-sided absorption with no way of feedback. A lot of people think Kojima should make a movie for this game, but given those conditions above, the game's narrative skills are so poor that it will turn into a horrible slapstick play.
    7. The world design is cool, and nothing else. There are too many settings are just for settings. In the game, many of the settings are even phenomenal, with no mention of the essence at all. It doesn't mean anything except, wow, this is cool.
    8. With Western-like scene and characters, yet the story is still, after all, a Japanese-style family drama. The grand design is only for a small story, and I have to say I felt wasteful.
    9. A game that makes you think about pain should not be done by making the reader or player experience pain. I'm talking about the beach walk at the end of the game.
There may be more, but due to my terrible English it’s too difficult to complain.

I have over 600 hours in this game, Platinum on PS4 and this is what a true open world game should look like. I really liked it, as it made me angry sometimes and it made me cry several times, leaving me really shell-shocked for a few days by the end.

I Really believe any that many games could use this type of open world terrain to it's fullest extent, there is just something amazing in it's scope and how it makes you feel so small compared to the world, it is wonderful, and exceedingly beautiful in a PS4 Pro, even in performance mode.

I was already a (Dark Souls reference here) Praise the Sun dude, Sun-Bro (cooperative) and Blade of the Darkmoon (anti-pk) guy before the game came out, so I had a pretty good idea how the asynchronous "strand" multiplayer would work. And so it was, I was obsessed by the notion of being able to help other players, specially those who, as I've seen in countless youtube playthroughs and twitch streams, just rushed the main quest. Man, these people suffered without unlocking the "side missions" gear upgrades. I spent countless hours building and optimizing my structures so they could serve others as best as possible, rather then myself.

Despite de game pacifist vibe, I found the so called Mules (petty thieves with some kleptomaniac disorder) and terrorists, who actually try to murder you, deserving of a punishment greater then just being knocked out or put to sleep with tranquilizer ordinance, so I murdered them all as they attacked me and delivered their cold bodies to the incinerator, as the game story will show you, bodies cannot just be left to rot.

I can't recommend this game enough. Maybe it's not for you, but I urge you to take the time to reach chapter 3 before calling the game boring or giving up, but in the end, you gotta try it yourself and make up your mind.

As for me, It was not just a game, it was a work of art that left a lasting impression.
Even as a FromSoft fanboy, I can safely say Sekiro was not the GOTY, Death Stranding should have won that.

Some people call it delivery simulator... They are so simple, unable to look through multiple layers and metaphors. If you like pure action don't even touch it. If you are into science and are intelligent go for it. You will not regret. Hideo Kojima is a genius.

As for the bad things... Well, all the rest.
. The gameplay loop starts decent and fun, but ultimately overstays its welcome and becomes overly dull and repetitive.
. The story is great and unique, but MY GOD it is convoluted and tiresome!
. Why does it need to repeat the same cutscenes and messages again and again? It should skip it automatically.
. TOO MANY TUTORIALS! TOO MANY THINGS ON SCREEN! TOO MANY USELESS NEW ITEMS! JUST LET ME *UCKING WALK!
. Unrewarding long and unnecessary sidequests.
    . Bosses are a joke.
. From the UI to the information displayed throughout the game, everything just feels... Messy.

    Score: 7.5

    The Good:
    -Visual impact *10/10
    -Storyworld *10/10
    -Sound design *10/10
    -Memorable characters *9/10
    -Gameplay loop is therapeutic *7/10

    The bad:
    -Narrative & delivery *5/10
    -Gameplay & mechanics *4/10
    -Controls, particularly vehicles *3/10.
    -UI & menues *4/10
    -Plot *5/10

Areas I want to elaborate on:
-Narrative & delivery: I remember several scenes where I'm told "this works this way" only later to be told or have something happen that contradicts the "rules". The contents of the story got me hooked effectively, but the delivery of the story points left something to be desired. Uninspired and boring.

-Social Strand genre/mechanics: Hideo Kojima claims to have invented a new genre. The idea of connecting with other players by the means of liking and sharing objects in the gameworld. This idea was novel and I really enjoyed it. It made me think about the potential and how I would use it going forward.

-Memorable characters: the way characters have been written and are presented to me is very Anime. The idea that a character is a manifestation of a quirk or a gimmick. It doesn't write authentic characters, but it writes memorable ones that feel unique and you get what they are about immediately. Also Margeret Qualley's character(s) are hot. Ahem.

    Quickfire points:
-The storyworld (world building etc.), AKA: the collective of lore, world and mythos, is gorgeous and inspiring.
-Atmosphere gets you in the ZONE.
-A lot of care and effort put into the sound design. The sound effects are the star of the show along with:
-The visuals. You are gonna be awestruck by what you see in this game.

My subjective score for this game is an 8 but my subjective score is a 7.5. Where Death Stranding doesn't succeed, in my humble opinion, is in the game design.

I honestly feel like this is most beautiful game in existence, the graphics, environments, backgrounds are all incredibly stunning, especially during the last chapters of the game, but even immense beauty and a good story doesn't make up for its numerous bad mechanics and gameplay.

The gameplay of receiving, managing and then mostly struggling to deliver cargo from point A-to-B gets incredibly tiring and tedious after a while, and let's face it, it is a job, but it doesn't pay you well enough. I mean good story and beautiful environments is nice, but it is not enough of a payment for the amount of work you do, and helping co-workers and getting help from your co-workers (strand network) is also nice, but I still felt unappreciated for amount of things I set-up vs the amount of help and likes I got.

The choice to put rough terrain in the majority of this America that is designed to slow you, ruin your cargo and vehicle, just so you would have the job over and over again with no eventual complete way past it, aside from taking it slow or using a different slower route is horrible (zip-lines are a thing but they cost too much to set up, and I reached my chiral capacity way too quickly of which I had 26k).

I just want this job to be over with but Kojima (our boss) is making it long and dreadful, and for what reason? Filler? I don't understand the design choice of making my delivery job as painful as possible, and why are there so much rocks? It just doesn't make sense.

There are also delivery companies (UPS, Canada Post, Amazon) that get to listen to music on route to delivery, but our boss Kojima doesn't allow it, except for on special rare occasions that he deems fit and our travels are much rougher than theirs, any sane employee would be mad at their boss for such things but there is always gonna be delusional workers that love their job no matter what happens and that is the exact case with Death Stranding.

Also, Kojima likes to use out of date software, with upgraded hardware, its infuriating, like why do I have to skip 2 different scenes just to recycle, and why do those skips have confirmation windows with slight pauses in between, same thing applies to:
    - taking a shower
    - entering a safe house
    - leaving a safe house
    - pooing
    - peeing

Aside from all those problems, I still feel as though the beauty, story, music, and acting of the game make up for some of it and that is why I gave it a 6.

I hope other developers and developers to come make note of this. You can gamify anything. For the longest time, games have been about shooting and killing. This is includes open world games. But games can be about anything, especially open world games Death Stranding proves that.

Usually I separate the bad and the good in my user reviews. Death Stranding is such a unique entity that it is impossible to separate the bad from the good because the bad might be the good. The game begins like a slow “walking simulator”. The player character is a porter who carries goods on his back and makes his way through a barren post apocalyptic landscape while a song from a little known Icelandic group plays in the background. I can understand how gamers, including professional reviewers, would be slow to warm up to this game. My advice for new players is to keep going. Like Kojima’s Metal Gear series, Death Stranding keeps adding gameplay elements and tools for the player character to overcome obstacles. By the end, this game is as relentless as any. Basically, a game like Death Stranding is for finishers.

The premise of the game is connecting people. The player character does this by transporting goods from one location to the other. Traversing terrain is not trivial but also not impossible. You can be strategic and lay out a path with ladders and climbing ropes in the early game and larger structures in the later game. Or you can try to shove a vehicle over the rocks and through streams. Anyone familiar with the Halo series knows that you can eventually fit a vehicle into a space that it is not supposed to go. This is only a portion of the game. The other portion, if you want it to be, is kicking ass.

The game gives the player character a progressively more powerful arsenal to defeat enemies. You start by using fists to knock out humans and end by using assault rifles and rocket launchers. The game is very clear that human enemies are not to be killed. No spoilers except to say that dead bodies are difficult to deal with. That doesn’t stop the player character from ramming humans with vehicles or knocking them out with rubber bullets. You can be stealthy like Metal Gear Solid if you want to, and the multitude of options is what separates a magnificent game from a decent game.

An arsenal of weapons also becomes available to deal with ghosts, a.k.a. BTs. No spoilers here. The player confronts ghosts in the opening cutscene. You start out playing a survival horror game and finish in monster slaying game. At some point you have to realize that Death Stranding is a video game and the ghosts are NPCs that follow rules. You can rely on stealth like with humans or you can also go in guns blazing to clear an area. Preparation and strategy is all up to the player and I love it.

The real gem of this game is the connection with other players. Although you never see the other players in you game, right from the start, you will see structures built by other players. You will build a bridge and another player will use it. You will find cargo lost by other players that you can use or return to them. Some structures will be partially built by other players and finished by you. During an intense fight, an avatar of another player will toss you items to help you. I found myself growing more communal, and sending items I did not need to a shared locker instead of my private locker. I built bridges to make the game easier for new players. I was effusive with likes to other players. I would love to see more of this.

If I have any criticism of Death Stranding, its in the UI for handling inventory. After about 40 hours of play, I still have difficulty understanding when to hold the X button to go back to the menu or when hit the O button to cancel a selection. The inventory system in Death Stranding is a bit unique in that each item is a fully modeled object. You can see how the items load into the player character’s backpack. There is no magic bag of infinite volume and finite weight like Skyrim or a grid of boxes to fill like The Witcher. I merely wish there were a few tweaks to make the UI easier to understand.

All in all, Death Stranding is fully deserving of all of its game of the year awards. In many ways, it deserves better of players. Few games bust through genres and even fewer succeed. Consumers like familiar things. They want the same Call of Duty, the same actors in every movie, and the same sounding music. Every now and then, someone like Kohima comes along and gives us something different. Embrace it.

Full disclosure: I played Death Stranding on PS5. The load times were super fast like any game on PS5. Transitioning from safe houses to the open world may have been torture on the PS4. I wouldn’t know.

A truly meaningful experience combined with a compelling soundtrack that moved me to seek an understanding of life I didn't realize was in front of me. This game has impacted me in ways I do not yet understand.
Years from now, this game will still hold a place in my mind, my heart, and in the time spent bridging the world together, one delivery at a time.
    Thank you, Hideo.

    2. The people who only like shooter games.

Ok jokes aside, I would totally expect a lot of people not to like this game due to its slow pace and not-too-exciting gameplay, and because it's such a unique game it was always bound do create some controversy.

Here's the deal, imo the story, acting and world building are the real stars of the game. How did Kojima come up with this world, story, art and design I have no idea.
The gameplay is actually very polished and does what it tries to do perfectly. The problem is that what it's trying to do is something that no crazy game developer has ever dared to try before, that is essentially a walking simulator. Now that term is too simplistic, and I'm not using it in a negative way, but traversing environments and obstacles to go from point A to point B is what 90% the gameplay is about. I personally didn't hate it, and I found it fascinating, but yes, it was a dull experience at times. After all, it's tough to create excitement without combat, survival thrill or competitiveness being key parts of a game. Still though, if you're like me and you find yourself completely captivated by Death Stranding's world and its mysteries, you will always have the motivation to keep going through adversities to eventually reach your destination. After all, it's not supposed to be easy or fun for a post apocalyptic delivery guy to get the job done, and this game manages to put the player's in it's protagonist shoes like few others.
This struggle and loneliness you feel throughout the game is what gives meaning and beauty to the online interactive system where players can help each other without ever meeting in person. When you find a tool or other kind of boost left over by another delivery guy, that's when you're reminded that you're not alone and that humans can pull though when they stick together, which is one of, if not the main moral lesson of the game. This is only one of many examples of what makes Death Stranding one of the most innovative, creative, passionate games ever made.

Expand

Death Stranding attempts an extremely risky gameplay loop in order to convey its' poignant message. It uses a complex physics system to make traversal fun and engaging. It uses a complex physics system to make traversal fun and engaging. Momentum, center of balance, and weight all affect how your character interacts with the world. The reason why traversal is so interesting in this game is because a delivery is rarely just a matter of walking from point A to point B; instead, you will be forced to balance and navigate a large myriad of systems and obstacles in order to complete your missions. Small rocks can trip you, rivers can sweep you away, and ledges can prove fatal. Keeping Sam upright as you traverse this deadly world is engaging exactly because of these obstacles and the difficulty involved with navigating them successfully. In addition to this core gameplay, you will be able to construct structures, ladders, and ropes which adds an extra layer of fun to the game. The building mechanic allows you to creatively solve challenges like ascending a large mountain or crossing a deep, rapid river. Each mission is more or less the same; however, each mission presents different challenges that you must over come with the tools available to you. You could descend a mountain by creating a series of ziplines with other players, you could simply use a system of ropes and ladders, or you could let a stream sweep you all the way down which is fast but dangerous. On top of the core mechanics related to traversal, you will also have to use stealth and combat to overcome an interesting variety of enemies including MULES(humans) and BTs(ghosts). Both of these enemy types will offer you the chance to test out a large variety of tools, guns, and gadgets. In addition to all of this, there are 8 unique boss fights that will blow you away with their presentation, design, and the original gameplay associated with some of them. On top of the core game, there is a fascinating world and story that will keep you interested from beginning to end despite some clunky dialogue and exposition. Ultimately, Death Stranding is clearly not a game for everyone but don't let critics convince you that it isn't supposed to be fun. For half of those who play the game, it will be addicting and immersive; for the other half, it will be tedious and bewildering. You should rent the game to see which one of those camps you fall into. Regardless, Death Stranding serves as proof of why Sony has won this console generation. They will put in the time and money to let creators create the games that they would like to play, even if those games might not always be financially successful. Like a great movie studio, they use their resources and platform to let artist flourish with almost complete freedom and the result is an astonishing collection of unique exclusives. Uncharted 4, God of War, Last Guardian, Bloodborne, SpiderMan, and Death Stranding are all examples of exciting, emotional, and wholly distinctive pieces of their creators that only exist because SONY understands that curating true art is the best pathway to establishing a successful console. Fantastic and brave. What could have been simply a Fedex simulator is lush due to the "strand" factor that makes the world feel like it's expanding a bit more with every advancement and every delivery. What I found most surprising was not the level of details that Kojima infuses into his games (what you can pick up, animations and interactions) but more the cooperative factor from other gamers (Dark Souls). Placing helpful signs, cheering people on, leaving gifts...Seeing a new bridge pop up or pitching in materials to finish up a structure is fun and keeps giving you reasons to grab just one...more...delivery. The genius of the game is the zen like moments it creates (should you choose to embrace the atmosphere) and then the hard shifts when you're spotted by MULES or stumble upon BT territory and the ante goes up.

Again, kudos to Kojima. It's not a "perfect" game. It's a brave game in a world that is ever tempted to give into producing the same old rehashed shooters and open world games that try to throw so much at you but never really make it feel like it mattered. Akin to popcorn Summer blockbusters. They're fun and necessary. But so are art house films that make you feel something deeper or remind you of why you love cinema (gaming in this case).

You'll probably know if this game is for you by now. If you're just starting, get to Chapter 3. Echoing what other outlets are saying, things probably hit their stride there for most people though I found the early two chapters nowhere near as monotonous as people were saying early on. I hope to see more risks taken like this from developers in the future. This is the first game in the nearly 35 years I've been playing them since the early Nintendo days that reminded me that brave ideas make for the most memorable experiences.

    - there is not much weapon variety (bola gun, grenades, your fists), you cant even use the electric spears of the enemies, which would have been a lot of fun.
    - attacking enemies while wearing your payload feels extremely clunky and unfun to perform
    - not much enemy variety either
    - you cant kill human enemies, because of them turning into void outs, so you only can stun them for a few seconds

    Traversing the environment:

    - walking around with a giant 120 kg, 3 meter high jenga tower on your back, while stumbling over rocks without falling, or climbing up ropes with the strength of your bare hands, while wearing the entire jenga tower on your back, looks just so immersion breaking. As if Kojima never heard of the terminology: center of mass. Couldn't they have restricted the backpack height just a little and gave him in exchange a few more drones which carry part of his payload and follow him around instead ? So that his movement while wearing the payload does not look as ridiculous?

    Story:

-The story is overall well done and it shows that Kojima does understand cinematography very well, but does his stories always have to be so esoteric and melodramatic ? I could have done easily without the paranormal ghost story in exchange for a alternate dimension colliding with our world sci fi approach. Let the deads rise up and void out, but at least try to give a halfway believable explanation for all of that, instead of resolving to pure esoteric giberish. After him explaining the reasoning of why the BBs (bridge babies) can see the BTs he totally lost me. That was the single most stupid thing i ever heard. Someone really needs to buy Kojima a few weeks of physic lecture on some university or college,so that he gets his facts straight and doesn't always have to resolve to pure esoteric nonsense in his story lines.

    Summary:

This game is a graphical milestone. The gameplay idea of having to constantly balance your payload on your back with the shoulder buttons, orelse risking a fall and potentially payload lost or damage is a very interesting and unique concept, but traversing the environment lacks a bit of variety and can get monotone very quickly and it certainly does not carry over 50+ hours. Adding a few additional gameplay elements and making the combat a little bit more challenging and engaging wouldn't have hurt the game either. If you love builder and hiking games then you are good, otherwise you maybe should stay away or test it at a friends house before buying.

We get ourselfs some one dimensional side characters with such a creative names such as Deadman, Mama and Fragile which if anything sound like a names for bots in multiplayer games. And yes their names do hint their motivations. What? You thought the characters will have real names or at least misleading nicknames? Too bad, this game was only made to look intelligent, but in reality it's pretty straight foward with it's ideas and intents to the point of explaining us everything before the said things are even properly introduced to us, we don't get time to learn about the characters, we already know everything we need to know about them, making any interactions with them look trivial.
Of course critics will give it high scores, most of them are already well paid by the creator and those who got confused by the plot will simply give it high rating to make sure community isn't pissed off and doesn't want them be fired or something(example: several years ago some reviewer gave GTA V 9/10 and fanboys wanted that reviewer to be fired good times really...)
Gameplay wise it's very weak, repetive almost identical missions, any obstacles encountered in the game are way too easy to avoid and defeat, making presence of BT's and Mules look pointless. The world of the game is an empty void.
Graphically looks a lot better then loads of crap that was Days Gone but it's not saying much or anything for that matter, it looks alright at best and painfully medicore at worst with reused environment. The game was promising with Kojima's first attempt to make video game on his own, but it feels like Kojima just surrounded himself with yes-man and ignored every single flaw of the game, he even went so far to call it a new genre while in reality it's just another linear sandbox game.
Video games can be an art but they should be cohesive as games before anything else, otherwise we'll be getting vanity projects with out any substence.

What can I say about death stranding .
The game almost Got it .
Every single thing about the game is perfect but when you mix them together they don’t work in harmony , I feel like there’s something missing it needs something more .
But in the end love it or hate it I do believe the Game is a experience that you should try to play it .

One of the most unique and interesting games I’ve ever played. It definitely isn’t for everyone and certainly had its flaws, but overall a mostly relaxing, contemplative, and enjoyable experience.

I could say a lot but no one will read it, i just wanted to give a fair score for a good game, while not the best 10/10 game ever made, it certainly isn’t a 0/10 like most of the angry reviewers

I appreciate death stranding being unique. But I think people just don’t have the time for something such as a walking simulator. That’s exactly what this game is unfortunately.

"It’s Hideo Kojima, how can you not like this game"

Please stop saying this, since I don't even think Hideo Kojima considered a lot about his Fans & other players while designing the game. The story and the music are good, but what else? All the other elements in this game are about average. I would love to see a cinema video made from the game story, rather than playing by myself

I went into death stranding with very high expectations, with it being a kojima game and was left disappointed with the tedious and boring gameplay loop of deliver item X to point A to point B.The world was beautiful and detailed and the story was interesting. It's ok.

This game is exactly what the trailers showed: dark and twisted, supernatural, best graphics to date, superb acting and motion capture, amazing music, beautiful landscapes, relaxing gameplay segments, horror elements, deep intricate story, lovable characters. A game truly made with HEART.
I just finished after about 2 weeks of every day playing, and it was such an amazing game! Best game

A FedEx simulator with shiny graphics and a pointless story where the developer feels to bash you over the head with the theme rather than let you think for yourself

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The definition of insanity is - Look it up. I'll wait. I could tell you the entire plot of this game and it would not matter. I’m sure Kojima wrote this game by throwing a bunch of those poetry refrigerator magnets at a wall and writing down what they said.

Magic Words: D.S. is the Monster Energy Drink of convincing ourselves that a regular game is an extraordinary game. So let’s get into it. Death Stranding is the funniest game of the year. But let me back up. I’m not saying Death Stranding is a bad game. Its not. Its just, Average. It looks beautiful. It’s relatively, mostly well-acted. Lore is interesting. I believe that everything Kojima wanted to do in this game, he did. But it was all Half assed and a basically am experiment. DS is written as a serious game. It has a msg it wants to tell us and that msg is that we are no longer connected as society. That is why you, as Sam, must walk across Usa connecting different points. The entire culture of D.S is the funniest thing of the year. Every moment of dialogue is lol funny. I’m not a statistician but I’d say maybe 100% of the cutscenes ended with me doing the jerkoff motion. When an aid to the president wearing a skull mask calls himself Die-Hardman, its plain Comedy. When characters won’t stop fking calling you over your codec to remind you of **** they just told you literally 30secs before, you lol in disbelief. The seriousness of a scientist telling you that your **** can be turned into a grenade is so strange. Interesting but weird. And the fact that it’s all wrapped up in a weird anti-social media and anti-abortion theme is, uh meh to morbid. But to give Kojima full credit the scenes are not supposed to be funny are also funny. Let’s not forget the product placement. Good Lord. In this world, we’re led to believe that all of America has fallen apart, except for the Monster Energy Drink corporation and fken AMC. What the fudge kojima-man? That cant pass as humour. Come the **** on. It’s product placement. No, It’s not a commentary on product placement in media. It’s just fking placement. it ****s on all seriousness of game. Because America can’t be totally disconnected and have mass produced brands. It’s just too stupid. Well its not buggy! It’s just so ridiculous. Sam trudging across mountains with a giant stack of boxes on his back is one of the funniest views in gaming. Let alone the fact that you’re constantly told that Sam Strand the Delivery Man is the only good porter in the business and then find 1000's other useful objects left behind by other players. Every moment you’re supposed to be overwhelmed by the solitude of our disconnected society is interrupted by 30 signs left behind by other peeps. Also, I’m glad that Kojima saw the crying babies in Yoshi’s Island and thought, “Yeah, let’s bring that back. If there’s anything to learn from that game it’s that crying babies work. The delivery system in Death Stranding is probably the best metaphor for the game itself. Characters with high expectations ask you to carry a big load, and then your ass falls over and have to coddle a crying baby. The baby in this being me, the player. That’s why the entire culture around D.S is funny to me. If you read reviews, Death Stranding is either a masterpiece of genius or a monstrosity that has disappointed the very Gods. It’s neither. It’s a frkiing game. It’s a weird game, but it’s not that different than other games. A lot of games have fetch quests. We already have games where you travel across rough terrain to deliver goods, had games where you explore and climb mountains and leave clues for other players, had games where you have to quiet a crying baby. DS just combines them into an obtuse package. That’s it. Saying, “There’s nothing like it” is just us advertising to ourselves. People angry at the game were unfairly expecting something brilliant from the man who had a half-naked woman in Metal Gear Solid tell her entire life story after being shot in the lungs. People who love the game are upset that not everyone is enjoying spending doing the same basic gameplay loop for 60 hours and then being told to **** off by the ending. It’s art, but all video games are art. You don’t need to justify it to enjoy it. Stop shoving it down our throats. There’s nothing that deep about D.S. The story is obvious, and the aspects of its world building that are confusing are confusing because they’re hidden behind cagey dialogue. The BTs or BBs aren’t confusing so much as confusingly explained. Understanding what’s happening or what it’s about isn’t that hard. And the fact that we really want there to be is the funniest part of all.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
