    Pros

    - The world created. It's really well designed. The textures, the colours, the nature elements and the Sci-fi tech design all great. You have a feeling that you are immersed in a new universe, in a good imaginary and creative fake reality...
    - The acting performance. It's top class. Good 3d renders and camera work. Never feels goofy.
    - The story. This is really important, if a story sucks and doesn't look credible I would loose all the interest in a game... The story looks really interesting. Things seem coherent. It's interesting how they explain the technology of the fictitious world. And from a creative standpoint, its excellent. So many ideas and concepts. Being a creative professional myself, on this point I say "chapeau" to Kojima.
    - The soundtrack and sound effects. I like the way he's using music! It's inspiring. And of course the sound effects are awesome. In the past Kojima's games UX/UI - the menu stuff, as always been great ( Codec I'm talking about you!). So this time around it's also super well designed, all the small details are great and the sound effects are great. But there are some negative points here in the Cons...
    - The gameplay. The game play it's actually very good! Yes, you walk a lot, but what walking! It's a good feeling! Makes sense and there's good feedback on doing it. If the game world is believable, level design thoughtful, graphics that support it all, then yes: walking around can be a great experience and, yeah, fun.

    Cons
    - The game doesn't explain well how to play it. There's a long learning curve. I'm still trying to understand a lot of things, which is not negative per se, but at times it's frustrating.
    - The Menu... the item management it's too complicated. I think they could've done a better system. It's fine once you took the time to understand, but still frustrating.
    - UX/UI, menus have very small typography. The characters are too small! This is a problem with a lot of modern games! It's like they want a certain graphic design look ( some apple inspired thing, I guess) but that part must really be fine tuned! In a game where NPC's send you emails that can be long, reading them in such small texts are a pain in the ass...
    - NPC's... Ok, it's a post apocalyptic world and humanity has been decimated, but it would be fine to encounter, see some NPC's here and there and not just on the building/places you are supposed to go ( maybe this will change in the next chapters... but looks like it isn't). Yeah there's Mules... it's different. I would like to meet NPC's once in a while. Would make the game's universe even more credible.
    - The online function it's very interesting... But I don't use it all the time. Why? Well it's fun to find a ladder that somebody left behind, and sometimes an encouragement sign... But I feel that there's too many sign and "ladders" and stuff. Like you need to go to a Mule camp and there's like sign left by other players everywhere warning you... this spoils the discovery. If every time I go on a mission and there's a sign every 5min or so, it spoils the game... makes it less immersive. So my problem here is with the quantity. The idea is great.

My conclusion is that this is a really original game. I'm glad that there are people in the industry doing this, and we need more high budget games that don't play it safe and go for something new. Otherwise the progress is game design is slow and boring.

The story is very basic but explained in a way that makes it sound super complicated and original, by over complicating a story that has been told many times before does not make your idea original.

The gameplay is tedious and when it isn't tedious it is boring, systems upon systems upon systems upon systems. There is boot degradation, there is rain that makes things grow old, there is a cargo balancing there are systems to stop Norman Reedus from falling over, it is just system after system after system. None of which enhance the fun of the game, they are just there because Kojima was allowed free rein to unleash and realize every little pretentious whim he had.

I appreciate what they did with the social aspect of the game but it counteracts the feel of the game. The game is meant to represent a dead world, you are meant to feel alone and stranded. A lone man bringing America back together. That is bit hard to **** do when there are bridges, watchtowers and other **** popping up all over the place.

The game is slow enough of as it is but then the game throws BTs at you in increased frequency as you play, forcing you to go even slower.

This game is a perfect example of what happens when you give a guy like Hideo Kojima free rein of a game.

I will give it a 4 because the graphics, motion capture, story telling (not the story itself) and general quality are average for the AAA market these days but the gameplay, tedium and systems are all below average quality.

There is not anything like this game and I am finding it honestly difficult to put down.

Modern games like the overwhelming and oversaturated shooters leave something more to be desired, and that is where Death Stranding comes in. Instead of fighting off other players and trying to prove a digital dominance over the other via mind-numbing twitch reflexes in a game that leaves players like myself in the dust, you can't help but become excited at a game that engages the player to try something new and to utilize something popular games tend to neglect: thought-provoking gameplay. Hideo Kojima is a man that builds things not for just senseless play that would insult people when played, but something that has seasoning and sustenance. His games usually have something important to say, be it the Metal Gear franchise's anti-nuclear stance and shady behavior of politics and such, or anything else the man has directed, you know you are in for a treat. He makes games that you can play multiple times and catch something you missed in dialogue, body language, and events with the first playthrough. There is always something to be further understood.

If you are looking for artistic genius and something new to bring to the table, then look no further and try your hand at Death Stranding. Go into it with an open mind and intent to try something new. I pray that you will give this game a shot. I for one cannot shut up about it!

I hoped for this game to be excellent. I wanted really hard to enjoy a Kojima game without the restrictions of Konami. This game sucks. If you're reading this, you must have enough of reviewers calling this game "Not for everyone". This game is only for those who are willing to take every **** with the name Kojima on. The game is in love with its self. There's no way to deny it. The core gameplay is boring and when it's not it's frustrating. There are so, so many parameters that you must check. Vigor, Stamina, Blood, Conscience, Shoes deteriorating, BB's humor, energy left in the battery. They don't make the game better, they're just there to bother the hell out of you. You're left alone in an empty world, a la Shadow of the Colossus, but this version of America lacks personality and atmosphere. Combat is bad but still a little enjoyable in the deep **** that is the rest of the game. The story is **** obnoxious. You are told in the first hours things such as "connect us" but you will never see the results of connecting people. The story is just told and never showed, it's a mistake that every single writer knows, even bad ones. Characters are one dimensional and even the great actors hired couldn't do much about them. The graphics are spectacular and Kojima as the director is amazing but those are the only positive things I can say about the game. It's a real shame because I was expecting this for years, since the first trailer. I will not preorder the next Kojima game. Expand

Creating a “masterpiece" - Let’s say you’re a game developer that’s really frustrated, really angry, disappointed of the whole gaming industry. You’re fed up with the greedy publishers, the big business politics, the spoiled ungrateful gamers, the stuck up gaming media. You want to stick it to the man, you want to stick it to the whole damn gaming world. How would you do it? How would a full triple-A “sticking it”-game, look like?
Let’s see now… It would have to be boring, if there is something gamers hate it is boring game-play, it has to be too long, over stay any welcome, I mean like 50-60 hours long, filled with repetitive tasks, without variation. The hero, he has to be right out bland, a nobody, doing tedious grunt work, like a garbage man, or… a postman? Yes, that sounds like watching paint dry! A postman delivering parcels, walking for hours and hours to get from A to B, to C to f-n Z! Even the side-missions should be the same damn thing! Yes, that’s great! And when I say walking, I mean walking for half an hour of game-play to deliver ONE package, in a terrain that’s monotonous as hell, tripping over yourself. It must be a chore. The world must be stony, hilly, slippery, wet. And let’s make this guy highly unstable, and since he always carries too much, he will stumble over every rock and cranny. And if he falls to many times (and we make damn sure that he will) the cargo will be destroyed! LOL… No leveling up for him! Sound good, and after like ten hours of this walking, we give him some sort of vehicle, a motorbike, and he’s like, “Yes, finally I can get somewhere”, but not so fast, because, of course, the vehicle will be even more frustrating, it will get stuck, it is clearly not built for this, it will easily overturn destroying the cargo, and when and if the player get the bike going at some speed, we throw in the most generic mud-slime-enemy to F**K it up, to the point where the player actually will consider leaving the bike and rather be walking … Rad! Talking about the enemies, they will have to be boring as well, and too easy to beat, gamers hate that, even the bosses should be bland as H***, repetitive fights, not too much variation, abstract, like the smoke-monster on Lost or something . Hm, I like were this is going! So now we have the worst possible game-play, a boring postman as the hero, a few bland side characters with generic childish names, like, Stone-man, Black tar-man? But… what’s the setup, the story?
…How about this, a dystopian empty future where this guy, this postman, saves America by delivering mail from cost to cost? You know that kind of naïve patriotism only a foreigner can make up… And then we throw in some quirky symbolic stuff, like other dimensions and stuff, and when we lured the sponsors and the financing in, we’ll make a few thought provoking clips to fire up the gamers, litter cryptic messages on twitter, hire big stars to kick start the hype. The Solid Snake-fan boys will eat that **** it up! They will eat it up and when the game is released they will gladly bend backwards defending the bore by calling it “immersing”, the mumbo-jumbo story by calling it “great art” and the 60 hours of repetition by calling it “challenging”! They will live in this denial for years to come! I will win prices and fame, because no one dares to say - “But the emperor, he is naked!” And just too really write it on the nose, we will make it really obvious, we will force them to weaponize their own p**, s** and blood fighting those generic bosses. We will have them p** and s** on cue, and every time they take a closer look at their hero, he will break the 4th wall, stick his tongue out and give them the finger! And while all this is going on… I will laugh my ass off!
    In your face, suckers!

    ~

death stranding is as unique as it is divisive, and i mean truly unique; there is no other game like this one (hard to believe these days, but it’s true). the hardest part about reviewing this game is dodging spoilers; everything in this game, from the many gameplay mechanics to the “multiplayer”, to the plot, to the message, is all woven so tightly together that you almost can’t talk about one without the others, and each are almost impossible to talk about without diving deep into them

realistically, this 10 is for me, but it might be a 5 for you, and you owe it to yourself to find out

if you have never disregarded all outside opinions on a game, good or bad, make this your first time; it is worth it

No, this is not a "walking simulator," anymore than Alien Isolation was a "hiding simulator," or a Quantic Dream/Telltale game "one big unending quick time event." That reduces what it actually is to a ridiculous level. It is also, not for people expecting a Metal Gear -esque game. I will tell you who will like this game, people who liked Journey, who liked Silent Hill (there is an element in this game where you are notified of a change in the world, and the world becomes much more dangerous, much like whenever the siren sounds in Silent Hill, it is intense when it happens), Fumito Ueda games, Cyan Worlds games, Quantic Dream games. If you dislike any of the above types of games, this game likely isn't for you. The "clumsy" mechanics is intentional, to mimic the actual difficulty of traversing land. You do repeat the singular task of delivery, over and over, much like the task of travelling to the next temple in The Last Guardian, over and over. It's the types of things that can happen to you each time, which gets intensified, more complex, each delivery and the next, which creates the tension, addictiveness, meaning and challenge of the game. Not to mention a very compelling story. It is bar none, one of the best game I have played this year.

I gave this a 8, due to two flaws: 1) the world is too empty, they can populate each station with a few people on the surface to give it a sense that it is a living world, though I understand the intention of creating isolation in the main character and due to aesthetic, much like a Fumito Ueda game like Shadow of the Colossus. 2) There is not enough stakes for the deliveries. Instead of cargo that are essentially all interchangeable with one another, it could have been that he's delivering a bomb or weapons or some secret codes or something that you SEE being used. Maybe this occurs later in the game (I'm still in Episode 2: Amelie). But these two flaws are a bit too jarring to not be noticed.

Otherwise, this has been a personally utterly immersive and gripping gaming experience for me. When BB cries, and thunder claps, the rainbow appears, I get the same feeling of intense dread I felt with the first Silent Hill games I played, whenever I heard the siren. It was very visceral.

It's not perfect, but between 8 and 9 out of 10 is where I'd put it. But do not buy it if you were expecting MGS. It is not. It's a great Quantic Dream-esque/survival horror-esque/Journey-esque/The Last Guardian type game, but with a lot more customization you can do with gear and a great story.

The people giving 0 are reviewing the wrong genre.

This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
