Most if not all of the people grilling the game with bad scores are ones who did not finish the game let alone reach half-way, so far loving every minute of it myself.

This game is a very specific product. I understand why it causes so much noise. And although my rating for this game is 10, I think its current score is well deserved. For, how true art is to me to debate and make you think. Kojima has done a tremendous amount of work on the game and it feels like an author's game and not a product of a large corporation. For which he is greatly thanked.

I would call this game a walking simulator, very unique genre never seen in aaa games . It has very slow pace in gameplay and storytelling, and defiantlyisn't for players who expect fast action. The action in game is very unique with BT encounters, and i find that part of game most interesting. However when fighting with humans i really didn't have much fun.

I’m almost 40. First video game I ever played was Lander. I sucked at it. I’ve owned Segas, Nintendos, PlayStations, Xbox, Ataris, Acorn Electrons, Amigas, PCs, Handhelds etc. I’ve played Arvade exclusives and seen the birth of emulation. I got my backside digitally kicked in Unreal Tournament and was a part of the Halo revolution. I played Rainbow Six, the original, and am privileged to have seen the evolution of gaming in its entirety. I’m talking the evolution in games from Ridge Racer to Forza Horizon 4, Dark Seed to Dragon Age. Metal Gear to the Phantom Pain. Tomb Raider (Original) to the Last of us. As a combat veteran, and a first-responder, gaming is existential to my escapism. A therapy for everything that I have seen and done. And as of today, in 2019... I **** hate the vast majority gaming industry. The only renewed faith I have in this modern age are independent releases. Let’s fast forward to a more recent event in the purchase of HIDEO KOJIMA’S Death Stranding. Mixed reviews all round, I’ve seen. The IGN controversy, the meta critic used score. Whatever you’re looking for in a video game, the tiresome state of the industry is vacant in this game in EVERY SINGLE WAY. I was looking for a game that might change gaming culture the way Minecraft made me look at LEGO (and my own creativity). Death Stranding achieved that in about twenty hours. An epiphany... one that stopped me dead in my tracks. This is supposed to be a review and while I’ll skip over the technical, graphical and mechanical-“als”, the main thing I wanted to talk about was why Death Stranding made me fall in love with my PlayStation again. And fall in love with gaming; like playing through Mass Effect or KOTOR. THE GAME... wtf is up with it? I’m going to simplify it before complicating it. I’ve seen a ton of people try to explain this game simply and the best way to describe it is this. You’re basically a Special Forces Postman, with Robocop like tech. Seriously. I can hear Norman Reedus in my head saying; “Somewhere, a delivery is happening.” Set in a Dystopian United States of America, an event known as the Death Stranding tore apart the fabric separating life and death. Now the dead show up in the living world and the rain (Timefall) accelerates time. You play as Sam Porter Bridges, a loner who separated himself from the last bastion cities of this broken world and spends his time moving across the broken wasteland delivering packages and avoiding the ghouls known as BTs “Beached Things”. To avoid ALL spoilers, let’s just say that he’s compelled to make a journey from East-to-West, to connect all of the remaining cities in the US via a strange phenomena called the Chiral Network. In the way are package thieves (MULES), Terrorists and the Ghosts (BTs). But they’re only distractions, because the real challenge is the JOURNEY. Environmental issues like water, rocky areas, mountains, canyons, crevices, snow, rain (including the deadly timefall which turns metal to rust in minutes). People need you to get to them. Other players will place tech, ropes, ladders, bridges and structures to help you. Sharing resources is a must, and you’ll get help anonymously at every step. Because we’re all in this together. Everything you do, can help others playing the game. You can even take on tasks meant for them. THE TECHNICAL... it’s... complicated. Which is AWESOME. This game is all sorts of philosophical. It’s the FIGHT CLUB of the gaming platform. Compelling, utterly, during the telling of its story and filled with symbolism and subtleties that drive your compassion to save the game world. The physical control of Sam is realistic and uses every PS4 trick in the book to create interactivity. You can soothe the Bridge Baby (An ethereal fetus that you “link” with to detect the BTs), you can adjust balance by the triggers, and of course, what is a Kojima game without a TON of cool gadgets to play with; from weapons (lethal and non-lethal), vehicles, structural creations like zip lines, grenades and more... There’s a LOT of inventory shuffling since nothing is kept in a hidden bag you can’t see. The mechanics of placing everything onto (and into pouches) on Sam is impressive. With battery powered exo-suits and tactically deployed resting/charging spots, you can cover the VAST and challenging landscapes using tools and items left behind by other players. THE FUTURE... of gaming? Maybe. Maybe not. Death Stranding is the first game in a long time where I’ve been eager to isolate myself. The infrastructure of highways, bridges and buildings stopped me in my tracks when I realized that after walking back and forth from a delivery CHANGED the ground I’d walked on. Others walked that path too... I know... players “liked” the path I’d laid. In a world where every AAA game wants ALL of your money... Hideo wants you to explore. EVERYTHING.

I am really enjoying the game. It is a nice meditative experience.
I like the easier than expected gameplay, the really awesome sound design and the long cutscenes.

I like being able to come home from work, finish a couple deliveries, see some nice story progress and call it a day. The ease of play and the nice environments are a bonus. I also really like the asynchronous online gameplay, where the material collection is not the goal but using them to do stuff and help each other out is the goal. I like that rank based on level and other accomplishments is not the focus. It really made me look at the loot part of gameplay differently, and I found that not worrying about loot/quality of loot made me open my eyes to something new.
I am finding that most of the criticisms people have are the reasons that I like this game.
I guess the whole hyping, and keeping stuff mysterious led people to have crazy expectations and then they were let down.

Just like many said, it was hyped as something but turned out to be something else. Even worse, the gameplay is boring and frustrating (deliver this, deliver that and hold R2/L2 otherwise ...).

I never thought Kojima would do something like this but he did

There is 2 sides one praising the game the other pointing out the flaws and also some in the middle both sides are completely valid I can say confidently the game is fairly boring its one of those games where its fun to watch but not so fun to play which I felt when watching my father play it then him letting me have a shot for a while. The game play is very slow VERY slow basically its get from A to B without letting go of your controller otherwise sam (the protagonist) is gonna fall over and also sneaking around the BT's. the best part of this game is making sam fall over... ok maybe not so much but thats still fun the actual best part is the the amazing views accompanied by the music me and my dad were waiting for some of that amazing music by low roar and some others I cant remember the problem with the music is that it just doesent play enough in my opinion your walking this long vast open spaces barren of any life except for the MULE's (the bandits of the game) and the BT's which is the last thing you want to see all this without any music there will be some fairly rare moments where you DO get music and when you do it looks and sounds amazing the music perfectly accompanies the amazing views you get but again these moments don't happen enough sure you can listen to them in your private room and at lvl 2 structures but the ones from the private room are ONLY in the private room and the lvl 2 structures only have so much range

in short the game is unique and is not a game for everyone but when you do pick it up its hard to put it down the game has its flaws but those flaws outweigh the positives or the other way around for other people
my opinion on the game is fairly balanced and thats why I would recommend this game to a select few. the people who are able to sink hours into a game and not get sick of it and those who dont need action to find a game fun (in a way)

Pretty game.... thats it. Its a garbage walking simulator with the groundbreaking mechanic of holding L2 + R2 so Sam doesnt fall and damage his packages. Embarrassing to even call this a game. No respect for the player's time. Just walking for hours and delivering to holograms.

Since I have enough free time, I play this game for hours non-stop and it really got me immersed. Time flies by fast. Can't stop playing it!

Before buying the game I was a bit skeptical about the asynchronous multiplayer, since I mostly play single player games. But it turned out really well. You will really appreciate it.

Story is very deep. I enjoy it.

Gave it a 9 out of 10 because I wish the enemies were a bit of a challenge. I find them very easy to beat. The vehicle mechanics are also pretty clunky and weird. Besides these hiccups, the gameplay, story and visuals are engrossing and captivating. An extremely immersive experience and just what I look for in video games. Not everyone's cup of tea.

Very interesting idea. I think that the game is perfect and ingenious. For the first time, I see that the game combines genres so well: sandbox, action shooter and horror. I played more than 60 hours and I think it takes so much time to realize the meaning of the game. I gave her the title Game of the Year.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
