    The game isn't what you'd expect it to be. Take it with an open mind. Not as a Kojima Fanboy or an action lover. I personally never enjoyed the metal gear series. Or the stealth of it. Love action games like Devil may cry or shooters like Borderlands or Overwatch. But what sets death stranding apart from all of that, is how well everything is executed. The Story is long almost 7 or more hours of cutscenes, and such and engaging and rich world that's built. Amazing voice acting from Troy Baker, Norman Reedus, Del Toro. And many others. The games meant to play connected online. Because it builds a sense of community and helpfulness between players. Showing that not every interaction between gamers has to be competitive. It's a game about helping others. Even in the smallest way or in a huge dramatic way. I've spent over 20 hours in this game and I'm only on chapter 3. As you play the world opens and expands and brings new gadgets and gizmos to make the journey even more enjoyable. Walk into this game. Don't run. And take a journey through America.

    The only reason why it's not a 10/10 for me is because I do enjoy good combat. But the combat is just basic and decent. Not horrible but nothing inspiring.    … Expand

One prefers blockbusters the other cinema. If you are of the latter Death Stranding is a remarkeable game or rather is a remarkeable playable book and cinematic artpiece with a huge dose of Kojima’s iconic style ofAs with any work of art the the value of the work is in the eye of the beholder.     I really admire Kojima-san's work, like that after all these years he hasn't given up on his dream. He said he'll make a movie and I suppose this should be trivial for him after all these years, but I wouldn't be surprised if his interests shifted towards game making and this movie will be almost like a hobby for him, that's my impression as you likely guessed.     On the game, another one that comes to my mind is Red Dead 2 and I'd say that this is even better than Red Dead 2! Wow.    … Expand

    I've put at least 10 hours in it and having a blast. Rule of thumb, don't listen to gaming journalist and just rate it yourself because I would have been missing out on this if I listened to the media.

    Death Stranding is neither a 10 nor a 0 it is surely something in between for the better or worse depending on how open minded you are and which game style you prefer. Actually I did not want to buy it but still did and wanted to check it out myself after all those reviews appeared that actually did not help anyone. So here are my thoughts on the game so far:

    The atmosphere is outstanding in this game. I like the game visuals a lot and also the sound is very 3D-esque creating a dense feeling. The graphics are very well done although there is not much happening in Death Stranding so this is something where the DEVs could put more emphasis on the world itself. Regarding that detail I think the world could ve used a little bit more variety, still the presentation is pretty.

    The movement in general is okay. I dont think the idea of movement balancing is something that benefits the game much, actually it is partially clawing the pad too much or just holding balance+climb. I think this could ve been done better. Also the running, stopping and turning around is kind of sluggish in comparison to other games, same goes to the pretty awkward driving. It gets better later in the game.

    The general storyline isnt too bad and although the game itself is very slow in pace I dont feel like I m getting where stuff is going at. There have been many words created within the world which makes it sometimes hard to follow. Also there are definitely some obvious plotholes and strange dialogues. Something that should ve done more smoothly is the beginning of the game. You will basically have to invest around 4hrs up until you reach the point where the game opens up for the first time. Pretty harsh in my opinion also the beginning is stacked with sequences etc. I didnt appreciate that part much as it felt more like a movie then actually a game and probably lost many players already at that stage. At around 10-20hrs of playtime you will get to a point with more variety that starts to feel more like a game and lets you more space to do stuff. This is where Death Stranding starts to shine. Depending on your pace and how many side quests you do it ll take quite a while and I can only suggest to endure a bit.

    For the gameplay itself the game is okay. Normal enemy encounters are somewhat on a flat line, BT and boss encounters are intense in contrary. The dense sneaking atmosphere holds up big time. It is not a shooter or (in my opinion) even an action game and this is something you feel in combat situations because it does not feel well smooth all the time to me. The game can be squeezed down to delivering stuff and connecting cities and/or emotions with some stealthing, there is basically not much beyond that. There is no real character development besides unlocking some items and crafting. Strangely enough the game still feels very rewarding. Delivering stuff, make the world "whole" again, use stuff that other players contributed and contribute yourself. If anything deserves praise than it is what Kojima created here and I respect him for that. He truely connected people in this game and besides all the post-apocalyptic vibes it feels soothening.

    After all Death Stranding seems too over ambitious to me. It has outstanding graphics and the interconnectivity between players that are actually not present is something very comforting and rewarding. Overall the game feels polished but it mixes too much stuff up and got me lost sometimes. The beginning is very slow and too misleading at times also very generic. You can definetely enjoy this game if you really give it a chance and enjoy slower paced games. Also be open to drop quite some hours into Death Stranding or you will not be able to see much progress in the time you spent.

    If you are up for something new, give it a try. I do not suggest this game to be bought at full price nor would I suggest it for casual players with not much time to invest or players that are driven by action or faster paced oriented games.    … Expand

    Le pongo un 10 al juego para contrarrestar el hate.... por que ya veo que esta porqueria de metacritic no es capaz de hacer nada para solucionar este problema.... Para calificar un juego solo deberia hacerse con un codigo unico que venga en el juego que compras y tres dias despues te avisan que ya puedes calificar el juego . Asi tendrias suficiente tiempo para probarlo. All you need to do - go through rivers, climbing up mountains, enjoy landscape and listen wonderful music. Sometimes you meet enemies who pose no threat even on high difficulty. In this case we can rate Civilization 0/10 for no action shooting, and rate God of War for no romance option.     The story and characters are super weird and intriguing. The world is incredible. The messages and themes to pick ap art are amazing and the cool game systems all work together to form one of the most unique, interesting, and fun experiences I’ve ever seen

    Ignore the haters this is a one of a kind game, am only 10 hours in and u can see and feel the quality. Only giving a 9 because I don’t kno how the rest of the game will be, but I expect I will be changing my 9 to a 10 once I have finished it.. Any1 debating buying this should do cos it is a unique experience.

    Absolutely one of the best games I’ve ever played. It’s So hilarious people (probably Xbox fans) came on metacritic to review bomb it. The ridiculous way that metacritic uses “weighted reviews” means that no game is going to get a fair review as long as there’s money’s involved.

    The game keeps me coming back to it again and again. Its not perfect but it gives me geeling of progress, visual and storytelling. Its unpredictable, its repetative. The worst part is shooting in trenches because game engine does not fit for it.

    A thoroughly enjoyable game with excellent gameplay mechanics, an engaging story, an online system that works and is explained in game. My only caveat is that this game is most certainly NOT for everyone. At its heart it is a “walking simulator” and if you don’t enjoy that style of game then you aren’t likely to enjoy this.

That reduces what it actually is to a ridiculous level. It is also, not for people expecting a Metal Gear -esque game. I will tell you who will like this game, people who liked Journey, who liked Silent Hill (there is an element in this game where you are notified of a change in the world, and the world becomes much more dangerous, much like whenever the siren sounds in Silent Hill, it is intense when it happens), Fumito Ueda games, Cyan Worlds games, Quantic Dream games. If you dislike any of the above types of games, this game likely isn't for you. The "clumsy" mechanics is intentional, to mimic the actual difficulty of traversing land. You do repeat the singular task of delivery, over and over, much like the task of travelling to the next temple in The Last Guardian, over and over. It's the types of things that can happen to you each time, which gets intensified, more complex, each delivery and the next, which creates the tension, addictiveness, meaning and challenge of the game. Not to mention a very compelling story. It is bar none, one of the best game I have played this year.

    I gave this a 8, due to two flaws: 1) the world is too empty, they can populate each station with a few people on the surface to give it a sense that it is a living world, though I understand the intention of creating isolation in the main character and due to aesthetic, much like a Fumito Ueda game like Shadow of the Colossus. 2) There is not enough stakes for the deliveries. Instead of cargo that are essentially all interchangeable with one another, it could have been that he's delivering a bomb or weapons or some secret codes or something that you SEE being used. Maybe this occurs later in the game (I'm still in Episode 2: Amelie). But these two flaws are a bit too jarring to not be noticed.

    Otherwise, this has been a personally utterly immersive and gripping gaming experience for me. When BB cries, and thunder claps, the rainbow appears, I get the same feeling of intense dread I felt with the first Silent Hill games I played, whenever I heard the siren. It was very visceral.

    It's not perfect, but between 8 and 9 out of 10 is where I'd put it. But do not buy it if you were expecting MGS. It is not. It's a great Quantic Dream-esque/survival horror-esque/Journey-esque/The Last Guardian type game, but with a lot more customization you can do with gear and a great story.

    Let me start this off by saying that I didn’t even know who Hideo Kojima was before seeing the trailer for this game, I have never played one of his games in my life, not even any Metal Gear Solid games. Blade Runner is considered a great movie, and some say it’s one of the best movies ever made, but others say it’s extremely boring. However, boring can also be interesting. Kojima wasn’t trying to create a game for everyone, he was creating a piece of art. Everyone has their own perception of art, some people think Picasso’s paintings are ugly, some think they are masterpieces. The point is that the game isn’t for everyone, it picks up fairly slow and gets to the main gameplay around chapter 3, People who leave bad reviews should at least get there before leaving bad reviews. If your looking through reviews and trying to decide if you want this game for yourself, I recommend that you give it a try and put a lot of thought into your experience. And as for people who call this game a walking simulator, manage your cargo better, or get a vehicle, noob. Not to mention the online aspect of the game. Kojima May have been exaggerating a little bit when he said it was a whole new genre of game, but it is something different. You never actually see other players on a game, except for the occasions where a white outline of them can be seen helping you in boss fights. However, the game plays out like social media, other players can build things and you may see them in your world. If you do, you have the opportunity to give their structures likes, and show your appreciation. This is really nice, especially since you can only give positive feedback for positive things, in an industry where games that cause you to trash talk others are common. Overall, pick the game up it’s great, and really says a lot about games in general, like how they are a form of art and not just something to waste your life on.… Expand

    The game itself is a quality Kojima game. Sony did a mistake doing so much marketing around it, which attracted too many people with over the top expectations. It supposed to be a game about rope rather then a stick, and it is a game about rope and connections. It has some really good mechanics around it, you just don't have to shoot people.

    One moment, you're playing an open-world adventure / RPG game where you take deliveries from point A to B, trying not only to stay alive but also keep your cargo intact.
    The next, you may find yourself stealthing past foes from the world of the living and the dead, potentially escalating the game into hectic action if you screw up.
    Soon after, you may find yourself building and repairing structures, establishing routes and laying literal roads, just to make your and your fellow players' lives easier.
    While not exactly an online-game, the players are sort of "connected" by their actions in the game world. Once a new area is connected to the Chiral Network, you get to see and interact with the various structures, signs, gear, and even vehicles of the other players (and vise-versa).
    Had a nasty, deep river blocking your path earlier? Maybe someone has built a bridge over it, making crossing a breeze! Got a long way to go to and need to lighten your load? Build a remote Post Box, and stash your excess cargo there! Maybe donate some of your extra gear to other players while at it. Gotta to find tons of materials to build an entire highway? Instead of doing it alone, co-operate with the community to finish the taunting task in a few moments! Got ambushed by nasty dangers on your way in to a new area, or found something neat to loot in a remote corner of the world? Place a holographic sign or two to inform your fellow porters about them in advance!
    The amount of choices given to you is vast. Little by little you witness the once barren wastelands evolve into bright and (sort of) living world. You truly are connecting with people, and not just with the NPCs!

    Finally, the "walking simulation" claims. Yes, you do plenty of "walking" in this game.
    However, where as in just about any other game you would just press UP and slide smoothly through the terrain, not having to worry about the weight or form of your arsenal, the Death Stranding truly SIMULATES all of these elements.
    It's a totally different thing to be running around with nothing more than your clothes and boots on, or to have 200kg of bulky packages hanging on your back and arms. There's a world of difference between waltzing on a flat and even footpath and having to balance on top of pile of wet rocks. You truly FEEL the weight, the physics, the terrain and the inevitable exhaustion of your character when you play DS. Tumbling down or getting washed away by rapids not only hurts Sam, but can also have you drop and damage your cargo, potentially ruining your day.
    This makes you really PLAN your actions in advance, making the game more tactical. Do I take a risk and reap big rewards, or do I play it safe and move light? Which routes do I choose, and will a Timefall be my cargo's demise? ...etc.

    VISUAL PRESENTATION: Photorealistic world and characters. Gorgeous lighting. Fancy special effects. Great!
    Soundtrack is beautiful and varied. SFX is top notch, and VA job ranges from "fine" to "great".

It gives you so many tools as your go through the game, you can create roads, ride bikes, travel through zip lines that you can place wherever you want and everything you do is at the same time connected with other people who left ladders or ropes for you in the way. It feels like a world connected even when you are by yourself as the game plays a lovely song from "Low Roar".

    This is the game for people who like hiking, sci-fi, and horror. Yes, you fight monsters, but while that is part of the game with a lot of spectacle, you will be wishing to be spending your time o delivering packages rather than fighting. Why? Because the weight system feels great, your decision making on what to take with you, will you take the difficult path or the longer route using a truck? How many deliveries can you take with you? Your decision and how you travel is up to you, and that sense of freedom and exploration is something few games can provide you.

    And the vistas....oh y god, the vistas. Well if Horizon Zero Dawn was like an Avatar beautiful World, and RDR2 was like a realistic beautiful look at our old western with beautiful landscapes. DS is like going to Marks, Venus, and every planet you think about it. I know it's supposed to be the earth after the Death Stranding event, but still. It loks bautiful and otherworldly.

    All that said this is not a game for those who want everything from the start. If you don't have patience I can see yourself getting bored. But if you're up to the challenge, just like hiking, when you get to the summit (8+ hours into the game) you'll start to get why this game is special.    … Expand

    Clearly a labour of love. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're a fan of video games you'll at the very least appreciate what this game is. Never been a huge Kojima fan but this is a work of art.

The system for which you interact with keeps things to a minimum, only letting you leave structures for other players to help them with their trek across post-apocalyptic america.     This game is one of the few games in my life that sucks me in in such a way that I cannot get it out of my mind no matter how hard I try.     This game is one of the few games in my life that sucks me in in such a way that I cannot get it out of my mind no matter how hard I try. I absolutely loved the story and the gameplay is brilliant once you understand how it all works and why it’s designed the way it is. In the first several hours you’re merely a courier delivering cargo and trying to connect outposts and build a new network of knowledge and data across a post-apocalyptic America. As you progress from east to west and the network’s wealth of knowledge and data grows larger you begin to connect with other porter’s built structures and the story really fills out. I love how the game starts you off with a whole bunch of disadvantages but once you accomplish a new connection you unlock the area’s structures made by other players, which is one of the coolest multiplayer ideas I’ve seen. You’re forced through the grind with no structures, and no guidance for how to get to the destination, and your rewarded with a right of passage and progress in the story, which really ups the sense of accomplishment and makes you feel almost compelled to hold off on progress for a few hours to work on roads and zip line networks to make the travel more convenient for you and for your fellow players to access when they unlock the new connection. The story is 100% Kojima, and I would argue his best story to date, albeit probably his longest as well. It definitely helps to have amazing acting by everyone in the cast and among the best looking visuals you can find today in games, all of it does a great job at really immersing you in the world, and emotionally connecting you to every twist and turn the game throws at you, and there are a BUNCH of out of left field turns that the game takes, which make very little sense at first, but really come together in the end. As is tradition once you finish the final antagonist encounter in the game you’re met with over 3 hours of interactive cut scenes but they help to tie up all the loose ends. I admit that there are some sections in the end that really drag on for a lot longer than they have to - and strangely the main part in mind is an interactive part - but all the same it all draws toward a very fulfilling conclusion..

    Would I recommend this game to everyone? Hell no - but not because it wasn’t amazing, simply because it takes a certain type of patience to allow yourself to grind your way through the initial few hours before things really kick off, and some of the longer subsequent periods where you need to spend time travelling long distances with minimal activity at times, but your experience is dictated by the player. You can choose to avoid (many) encounters whether with BTs, Mules, and even some of the mini-bosses, or you can face them all head on and fill the game with thrilling encounters, and that’s one of the things I really love about it, but is an acquired taste for sure. I played for nearly 80 hours before completing the story but nearly half of that time was staying back and building structures for other players and for myself to have an easier go at the traveling parts, which made side missions more tempting to do and it was easy to get lost in it, but it’s not that essential, it just makes the later parts (especially really close to the end) a whole lot easier and more rewarding. I absolutely loved this game and since there are things to do when the game is over I’ll probably continue to expand the infrastructure and finish off more of the side missions from time to time. If your looking for a game with a compelling story, a combination of peaceful exploration to high Adrenalin battle encounters (some of which that can REALLY surprise you), and if you have the patience to put yourself through a bit of hell to get through it, then it’s an absolute must-play.    … Expand

    The game is not for everyone.I personally enjoy the slow pace of the game,but the truth is even if the story is great (which i have to say,as far as i have played it is),someone that cannot stand the slow pace,will not give much attention because of their frustation with the game play.Also the characters backstories are not that deep if you are into that thing.

    A masterpiece! As a gamer from the 70s this is a breath of fresh air amongst the boring re-skinned games and god awful Fortnite garbage. It's new, fresh...clever and unique. Progress and hard work reap rewards. I have beat the game (55 hours)and after 20 hours or less I could easily get about the game world. It's all a learning curve. Those that struggle have either no patience or brain?

That said, a game is a game for most of us, and I can see why people dont like the gameplay as it can be tedious and repetitive trekking with a load of packages and delivering them. I did enjoy finding routes to traverse the terrain and enjoyed gathering materials to build roads, it was tedious yet addictive.
    I found the story a tad confusing but intriguing and there were some marvelous performances from start to finish. Overall I loved the experience, and that's why I have given it a 9, but as a game I cant give it a 10, I wont spoil the ending but it was very drawn out and long, be prepared for that, but yes all in all well done Kojima, I have never experienced any game like it!    … Expand

    I dont understand all the hate i feel like most people who put negative reviews played alittle or not at all. The more you play this the more intriguing it becomes maybe it isnt for everyone but this game deserves a better score than the one its recieving currently the actors in this game are amazing. From Norman reedus to Mads Mickelson. Even the voice actors like Troy Baker do an amazing job.

They didn't go over the mission where you slowly walk in snow for 15-30 minutes and go "Hey maybe we should just delete that one" then you have to walk BACK another 15-30 minutes because the location you go to does not have fast travel. On top of this you get nothing from the location other than a skeleton that helps you walk thru the snow SLIGHTLY faster. Damn that would have been really useful before i wasted an hour of my life watching a video game character walk up a snowy mountain. There is a faster way thru, but it has BTs and this is one of the only orders where you have no BB. This game was a solid 10 until this mission, thats how bad it was. A lot of other orders have made me so frustrated but I usually end up realizing there is something I could have done better. For order no. 47, there is nothing I could have done better. You can't sneak past BTs in this mission so you are literally forced to just walk in the snow thru absolutely nothing, which there really is no faster way to do this as far as game mechanics are concerned. It's so annoying that this game is an easy VERY positive score with the removal of maybe 3 orders.

    Also, any person giving this game a rating in the 0-4 range (especially 0) has not actually played the game or is entirely irrational. Despite the few botched missions it is extremely polished, more so than 99% of games this decade. If you're on the fence about this game, just know there is A LOT of walking/hiking around. But if you're patient and enjoy amazing art direction and story telling, you'll find a deep purpose in all the walking/hiking around.    … Expand

Want to simply speed by the terrorist in a truck avoiding their attacks or sneak by the bts instead of combating them? You can also do that. There is tons of player choice when it comes to selecting your losdout for missions. You can bring plcs which let you build several different structures such as shelters and generators, you can bring ladders, ropes, power, speed, or terrain skeletons to boost weight capacity and mobility, different weapons, vehicles, and much more. The community features for this game are simply amazing. Once you connect an area to the chiral network you can use the structure and vehicles others have placed on the map and even send lines to other players. I have gotten so many likes for well placed roads and generators and it’s jusy a good feeling contributing to the game world, I love it.

    In my opinion, the people calling this game “boring” never gave it a chance in the first place. This is truly a 10/10 game in my opinion and I’m leaving a in depth review as to why.    … Expand

    Seamos sinceros... es una fumada impresionante, de las de noche entera encerrados en un coche dandole al canuto...
    Como juego es lo que es, un walking simulator con un par o 3 de mecanicas jugables (EV, Mulas y planificar ruta)... peeeero la historia siendo fumada a mi al menos me ha enganchado.

Now it's finally out, the reviews have been streaming in and so far it's got mixed opinions for a variety of reasons. Now it's finally out, the reviews have been streaming in and so far it's got mixed opinions for a variety of reasons. The first thing that might put people off is that at it's heart, it isn't an action game (or at least, it isn't at first). It does appear to share and engine and some control mechanics from the MGSV games but other than that, this is entirely it's own property and focuses more in terms of Sci-Fi and Horror than other genres.

    You play as Sam Porter Bridges, motion captured and voiced by Norman Reedus (an actor most famous for The Walking Dead and Blade 2)
    Sam is essentially a courier tasked with travelling the strange and inhospitable landscape caused by a post-apocalyptic event where society is reduced to living mostly in bunkers with very little resources. Key aspects of the game include balancing your cargo load, carrying collapsible ladders and climbing anchors to make yours (and other players') journeys easier. You have to maintain your walking boots, keep your chest-mounted BB unit happy and look after your health and stamina. Crouching makes you slower and makes carrying heavy loads easier. Walking and running will shift the cargo weight onto one side, forcing you to move more slowly or stabilise yourself to avoid falling and damaging the cargo.

    Throughout the world your presense to other players (if online mode is enabled) will allow for player-made structures and signs to appear in your game. You can award these likes so that other players may reward those who are generous with their time and resources.

    You'll encounter some rogue forces too. There are the MULEs which are a hostile entity that will steal your supplies and will enter combat with you if you stray into their territory. There are the BTs that appear during periods of heavy rain. These semi-invisible forces are hostile and will attempt to pull you into the underworld which will force you to respawn and make you lose your progress.

    There are a large number of cutscenes in the game, some are from colleagues giving you information but others are fully rendered video sequences which set the story and fill in the world. There is an extensive backstory and text notes which fill in the game's lore and give you a better idea of the world.

    Later on you are able to fabricate objects based on blueprints and can upgrade your equipment. The map will open up to you allowing you to travel further and take on riskier jobs.

    The visuals in the game are stunning and definitely push the Playstation 4 to new heights in terms of technical achievements. The music and sound in the game is exceptionally well done, some of the named bands contributing songs have done a great job and these always play at the right time. The voice acting is excellent and definitely some of the best VA work I've heard in recent years. Gameplay is understandably a bit of a mixed bag for some, your character is meant to be quite normal so you do have to keep your footing and watch your stamina gauge to avoid tiring yourself.

    An amazing game, every time I finish a contract, I can't wait to get out there again. I've been having so much fun the last week, exploring, and watching structures suddenly popping up that others build.
    The entire progression system rewrites the book what progression should be. A true masterpiece.

    When I first started playing, I was blown away by the immersive soundtrack and rain (I also play with 7.4.4 surround sound system on OLED which may have made this experience so amazing). It was relaxing, intriguing, stylish, and trance-like. Full of art with Planet-Earth like visuals.

    Then, when I moved, I thought it was so creative in how the terrain correlated with my fatigure/energy in what I was carrying and such. Having been through a nasty nasty divorce, this game has been somewhat therapeutic and reflective. It's like a peaceful dreamworld, but the peace is intermittently threatened.
    I can go on and on, BUT....if you appreciated the movie MARTIAN, enjoy nature, and innovative gameplay with SCI-Fi elements, this is a game for you.

    I spent an hour playing the game an I really enjoy it. Its very engaging as of right now I wish i was at home still playing it. But i had to go to work. Just try the game first for yourself before saying its terrible which it is not 9/10 is my rating of Death Stranding.

    Amazing game with a new way to play asymetric multiplayer. Loved the story, characters, world building. The gameplay was fun and fresh. The visuals are solid and the caracters look great. If you dig the core gameplay loop you'ill love this game.

    Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it.     This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

    Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
