The worst part is that it's not even close to the level of quality or polish that b4b offers. This game is just trash in comparison.
Game progression
Need to get to the next level, go get this circuit breaker. Need to move something, fetch this card key on a dead body. Want to make it somewhere, flip this lever. There, you have all you need to make Dead Island 2. The mechanics of the game are just lazy at best. The problem solving is boring and dated. It's kind of insulting that this is a $60 game.
Audio
The audio is muddled at best. Often times recordings don't hold up very well in tight settings such as the sewers. Guns and explosions just don't resolve like you would expect from a AAA game.
The worst transgression is that zombies can just plain sneak up on you. Even lumbering tallboy knockoffs can make it behind you without so much as a footstep making it into your ear drums. This makes it very challenging to be able to position yourself more dynamically in settings where there's no place to hold up for a fight. Without good audio, it's hard to build the necessary spatial awareness that's often critical for kiting in zombie games.
Fighting mechanics
Fighting zombies is not an enjoyable experience. Instead of hacking and slashing your way through a horde, your razor sharp katana feels more like a pool noodle. Heavy blows from sharp objects don't end up hacking off limbs as you would expect. Instead, zombies are pummeled left and right in an unsatisfying manner. It feels like the devs just cranked up the bullet/damage sponge settings for every class of zombie to the point where I kind of dread having to tango with anything.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it should be easy to hack and slash your way through a horde, but the delivery is subpar. Weaker zombies should at least take damage in unique ways, a la Dead Space necromorphs. Limbs should be able to be hacked, zombies should be hobbled.
The final two levels of the game are unnecessarily difficult because of the sponginess of the zombies and a sudden increase in difficulty for the enemies without any story elements that help to explain the change. We breezed our way through beating everything up until that point and then lurched during the last two levels.
The final boss level is just disappointing. It's not a well thought out battle that has unique elements for the final enemy. Instead they just throw all of the zombies that you've fought previously at you for a sort of bullet hell/zombie horde wave mode.
The game is just boring and is in no way memorable. They should have just set this game out to pasture given it took so long to produce. The world would have been better off.… Expand
