I had more fun than I expected. Fantastic story, good gameplay. I love that it's TPP, not FPS (most of zombie shooters are). There are small things to improve, but it's nothing that could impact the fun that the game gives.

It's been a long time sense I've enjoyed the campaign of a game. Characters are likable but they don't stand out that much. The concept of NERO in the story is interesting and with hopes for a second game, they can explore that concept even more.

Expand

Your bike becomes an extension of you and the fact that bullets, fuel, and heavy weaponry are scarce, enriching your immersion in this post-apocalyptic world. Climbing and scaling is also fun and realistic.
Enemy encounters like road ambushes and migrating hordes were the best procedurally generated gameplay content I've experienced.
No level gating or grinding but player progression through skills is also top-notch!
I enjoyed Deacon as a deeply flawed protagonist haunted by his past, a protagonist doesn't need to be a role model, the motion capture for Deacon is best in class.

Now to the bad. Story pacing felt choppy at times. At times I was receiving 5 radio messages, one after the other. This could've been spread out by delaying mission unlocks more and injecting more incentive to free-roam, or by not allowing new transmissions to come through if you are 200 feet away from your GPS coordinates or a camp.
I discovered later game content earlier than I should've at times, they could've just removed some set pieces and added them when the time came. I wish Enemy AI was smarter and, although Deacon's model is emotive, some side characters were stiff.
Overall it's one of the few games I enjoyed getting the platinum trophy ever, my favourite game I played this year.

The game managed to build a convincing world. We have to learn it or we'll end up dead soon. The world is scary on the one hand but beautiful on the other (I haven't made so many screenshots in a long time). The feeling is intensified by moving around the world on a motorbike, it is simply great to drive.

What I have to personally commend from my heart is the reputation system and the presentation of plot threads in percentages

I loved crossing these desolate landscapes on my motorcycle and scavenging for gas and ammunition. I just wish there was a thirst and hunger mechanic in Survival Mode.

Combat is nothing new but it works, it is basically a RE4 TPS. The mission system is not overwhelming as your map will not be filled with quest markers and it progresses organically. Upgrading the motorcycle is very satisfying. I felt attached to it very quickly and had a great time maintaining and customizing it. And there are the hordes. Man, the hordes...

I would like to write a bit about the freaks. There are not zombies, and it is disapointed they were labeled as such when the game was released. Though it is true that they are infected people turned into violent and wild cannibals, they are very much alive and eat, sleep and drink. Take some time and follow a horde for a while. Sit quietly and observe their routine.

The story is better than most people would like to admit, though in the end it will depend on your personal preferences.
i honestly dig this story about a mourning broken man, and it makes sense because it justifies how brutal he is. Little stories in big worlds.

The game also got a lot of support from the devs, who kept patching and improving it over the years.

i can only recommend this game. it is honestly one of my favourite. Man I wish there was a sequel...

Days Gone is an open world third person shooter survival horror game. Set two years after the initial outbreak of a Zombie apocalypse, you assume the role of an Outlaw Biker named Deacon St. John and follow his story during the outbreak.

First I'd like to talk about the story. Without any spoilers, the story is one of the main pillars that carry this game. Throughout the game you'll meet plenty of interesting and compelling characters, which is what makes the game so great. The people you interact with actually feel like people. The dialogue between characters in the game does not feel forced or like they're being read off a script. It genuinely feels like a real conversation between two people. I noticed this a lot as well with Deacon's voice actor, the stutters of "I - Uh - Yeah" type conversation, makes the game feel like it's inhabited by real people.

The gist of the games story is going from camp to camp as you're classed as a "Drifter" in this apocalypse. A Drifter is someone who doesn't belong to any established camp, and you're essentially doing runs and more or less, for lack of a better word, mercenary work for them. Naturally Deacon has his own personal storylines as well for you to follow so you will notice that there is a healthy balance between Deacon's own personal goals as well as the goals of others and encampments.

I'd like to also take a moment to talk about the character of Deacon St. John. Deacon is definitely a complex character, the best way I can describe him is that of an Anti-Hero. He would slot right into any Grand Theft Auto game with ease. He is aggressive at times, confrontational, a very straight shooting no-nonsense kind of guy. Which is very refreshing as in these types of games you normally have a protagonist who is a glass half full kind of individual. Deacon feels like a real person who is going through some real stuff. There will be times where you'll agree and also disagree with what he says and does. He is not a perfect hero by any means but definitely one worth playing.

    The gameplay is solid.

Performance wise, which I'll just touch on briefly, is outstanding. Rarely any frame drops, game looks great, lighting looks great, zombies look solid. Graphically it runs great.

However, gameplay: Third person shooter where you'll also be spending a lot of time on your motorcycle, to definitely get used to that. Some difficulties disable fast travel so keep that in mind if you want a more authentic experience. The gunplay is definitely the best part. The recoil feels real but not too real like a mil-sim. Enough that you need to at least re-align your shots on some of the more basic weapons. You get all your consumables etc, grenades, first aid kits, all those tropes are still here. However where the game excels in my opinion, is facing off hordes. I'm talking anywhere between 75 and 500, yes, 500 zombies all chasing you at once and you are the only one who is dealing with them. I won't tell you how to do it, you can figure that out for yourself, but it's exhilarating and once you've done it, I guarantee you'll realise you've been holding your breath a bit. It's one of the most intense and adrenaline fuelled feelings you can find in any video game. Also, despite having all these zombies on the screen, you won't see a drop in performance.

Your motorbike is something you'll spend a lot of time on. And although there are no appearance customisation skins for Deacon, there are a lot for your bike. So you can tailor it to how you would like it to appear. Upgrading it and riding it around off road is something I enjoyed very much.

One of my only criticisms of the game is how the missions are given to you. I don't mind walking from A to B to pick up a job but some missions you need to wait for them to call you. There were times where I'd cleared out all the side stuff to do in an area and was basically just waiting for someone to radio me to give me a mission. Fast travel somewhere or fast travel back, which costs you money in fuel resupply. Just a niggling issue, not game breaking, but I'd prefer it if as soon as I finished a mission, the next just popped up on my map.

Overall, Days Gone is a game you should absolutely play, it's so much fun and I wasn't bored once during my entire 43 hour playthrough. The game should take anywhere between 30-45 hours depending on how much side content you do. You'll definitely get your money's worth and you'll also be a part of a great universe with a compelling story and fantastic gameplay.

For me, Days Gone is a 9/10.

One of my favourite open worlds to play and it was rare I even felt the desire to fast travel such was the fun in just riding my bike from place to place with the great soundtrack in the background. Solid combat, decent gun-play, And the Hordes, oh, the Hordes. The first time you come across one (in my case rail-yard), panic sets in, run, shoot wildly at anything, run some more, panic some more. By the time you are facing the endgame hordes, your development represents the characters development, careful, thought out, traps, pinch points, more traps, more pinch points. You're an old hand by now.

One criticism I've seen is the characters but I loved them, flaws and all.

The only reason I am not giving it a full 10, is because, nothing is perfect. Or maybe Days Gone is?

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic Oregon, two years after a global pandemic transformed most of the population into flesh-eating creatures called Freakers. The player controls Deacon St. John, a former outlaw biker who is trying to find his missing wife Sarah.

Days Gone received mixed reviews from critics. While the game was praised for its visuals, story, and characters, it was criticized for its repetitive missions and technical issues.

Here is a summary of the pros and cons of Days Gone:

    Pros:

    Great story and characters
    Stunning visuals
    Immersive open world
    Exciting combat
    Varied gameplay
    Cons:

    Repetitive missions
    Technical issues
    Slow pacing
    Lack of innovation
Overall, Days Gone is a flawed but enjoyable game. It is a must-play for fans of post-apocalyptic games and zombie fiction, but it may not be for everyone.

Here are some of the things that Days Gone does well:

The story is engaging and emotional. Deacon St. John is a well-developed character, and the supporting cast is also memorable.
The visuals are stunning, especially on the PlayStation 5. The world of Days Gone is a beautiful and dangerous place, and it is brought to life with impressive detail.
The combat is satisfying and varied. There are a variety of weapons and strategies to choose from, and the Freakers are a challenging enemy.
The open world is immersive and full of things to do. There are side quests, challenges, and collectibles to find, and the world is constantly changing as the Freakers evolve.
However, Days Gone also has some flaws:

The missions can be repetitive. There are a lot of fetch quests and other filler content, and the main story can drag at times.
The game has some technical issues. There are bugs and glitches, and the frame rate can drop during intense moments.
The pacing is slow. The game takes its time to get going, and it can be a bit of a slog at times.
The game lacks innovation. There is nothing new or groundbreaking about Days Gone, and it feels like a retread of other open-world games.
Overall, Days Gone is a flawed but enjoyable game. It is a must-play for fans of post-apocalyptic games and zombie fiction, but it may not be for everyone. If you can overlook the flaws, you will find a game with a great story, memorable characters, and stunning visuals.

While Days Gone is nothing revolutionary, and despite having its issues, it's a pretty solid game!

The storyline is pretty generic zombie apocalypse stuff that's been done a million times before, but it's still a good plot. The gameplay, controls, graphics, audio are all pretty spot on. I love any open world game that let you do whatever you want, whether it's doing the main story mode, side missions, or just exploring the world at your own pace. The only real annoying things so far are how fast your bike runs outta gas and finding gas cans to fill up lol, the game does get repetitive after a while, and ammo can be kind of scarce sometimes.

I don't really understand all of the negative reviews this game got from the supposed "gaming professional reviewers"?! Like I said before, it's nothing revolutionary, but most games aren't these days. Every new game doesn't need to re-invent the wheel to be a good or great game.

Combat is a little bit rough but more than serviceable. Where the game excels is in creating a constant tension with scavenging, and with the vital link to your motorcycle which is critical to your survival, but requires care and maintenance just like your character and inventory. I think reviewers in a hurry to get through the game and get their reviews out may have missed the point of the tension creating systems like constantly needing to scavenge and fuel your bike. Perhaps the reviewers ended up resenting what is in some ways the point of the game, creating an atmosphere of tension. I often don't play this game for hours and hours like I do some other titles because honestly the tension gets exhausting, but as far as making me invested emotionally it works well. Expand

There is little motivation to keep going during the early hours, and you feel a bit underpowered and overwhelmed. Days Gone feels a bit bloated at times and could have used some strong editing or some other way to draw you in sooner. It is true, what you've heard, that the game gets better the more you keep playing. The story really becomes one in which you meet interesting characters in varied locations, and the protagonist, Deacon St. John, reveals layers of depth. This is a true hero's journey, with an arc that will have you invested in his success. There are twists and turns along the way, with reveals and surprises.

Technically, yes, there are issues. The frame rate tends to drop when you're riding in the open world, and that can become frustrating. I have also experienced several crashes where I had to restart the game. I have found that a full reboot of the console tends to clean out many of the issues, but this shouldn't happen with a first party game. That being said, Days Gone can be exquisitely gorgeous at times. The lighting compliments the detail put into this world, and the cutscenes often have a nice polish to them. The animations of the hordes are a technical achievement that deserve praise. I have often found myself saving clips from my more terrifying encounters. It seems like Sony Bend was just shy of perfecting their vision for Days Gone, and could have used a bit of help on the technical side, but overall this is a very nice looking game.

Sony Bend nailed the motorcycle. It handles as it should, and considering its your primary mode of transportation, investing in upgrades will offer satisfying payoffs resulting in better handling and speed (and gas milage). Don't be surprised if you find yourself personalizing your bike with tasteful decals or eye-catching colors. Your bike will be a reflection of you and your journey through Days Gone. It never gets old seeing your motorcycle in all its glory in the main menu.

The combat is also quite satisfying. The melee weapons are crunchy and varied, from a nail-spiked bat to hatchets and axes, and even a saw-blade swinger that will do some serious damage. As far as the guns go, there is a nice selection of assault riffles, pistols, sniper riffles and light machine guns, as well as explosives and Moltovs. You can earn upgrades for your weapons and attach silencers to them for some much needed stealth. You continue to get better weapons as you move through the game, and will be appropriately armed by the time you're facing down the hordes. Pro-tip: You will see hordes earlier in the game. Just run. You aren't ready yet. You will know when it is time to face them head on.

The character performances are mostly admirable. Deacon can be a bit silly with his grunts and tantrums, and you'll find his reactions are often over the top. But everyone else nails their characters, and Deacon, despite his melodrama, is a character that you might grow to love. He's a ham, but he's earnest, loyal, and dependable. He's a man who has lost everything, searching for something, anything, to keep him from going over the edge.

Days Gone is truly Sons of Anarchy meets The Walking Dead. It doesn't hit all its marks, but its aim is true. It is unfortunate that Days Gone takes a bit too long to hit its stride, but once it does it offers satisfying gameplay, gorgeous vistas and compelling characters that will see you through to the end of its journey.

However, there are some pop-in textures, so sometimes characters and environments look bland before the textures start loading up. Can't wait for next gen to clear all these texture limitations and up the framerate.

    2. Excellent voice acting in general. Deacon is not your typical hero. There are times when I like him, and times when I just can't stand the way he talks and acts. He's very flawed and almost unlikeable but in the end, he grew on me. Seeing his relationships and interactions with other main NPCs help build the bond between you the player and Deacon as you slowly get emotionally invested in his journey.

    3. Zombie hordes are terrifying. And I only played on normal! My blood really got pumping when taking down hordes. A very unique experience.

    4. Motorcycles upgrades are fun, and the variety of weapons, tools and skills at your disposal make character progression very satisfying.

    5. Satisfying gunplay. My favorite weapon is the sniper rifle. Sniping is oh so awesome. Challenge yourself by not tagging enemies and just rely on your situational awareness. I always go stealth and when things go awry, I take the action up close. Very fun combat gameplay loop.

    6. Engaging story that got me interested to stick to the end.

    7. Interesting collectibles and historical facts of Oregon.

    8. Open world is not as intimidatingly huge as Ubisoft's AC Origins/Odyssey and Wildlands. It feels just right, like Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding and MGSV.

    Cons:
    1. My main gripe is it's story. I love a big, meaty single player game like The Witcher 1-3, Skyrim, Fallout, God of War, etc but by the end I was like, when is this gonna end?? That's a sign of a poorly paced game in my opinion. They could have cut some parts of the game to make it more on point and I believe they will because I am overall impressed by Bend Studio and cannot wait for Days Gone 2.

    2. Storylines and Collectibles UI. When you progress through the story or find a collectible, there is no shortcut or highlighted icon to the updated lore. You have to manually dig through the growing list of collectibles and quest log find the information you need. Devs, just follow games like Dragon Age, Witcher, Mass Effect when it comes to codex and lore systems.

    3. Deacon. I can't stand the way he talks sometimes. Like he's unable to form a coherent sentence in his head. Not sure if it's the actor or direction they were going for. The 'umms', 'uhhhhs', awkward short pauses between words really made it frustrating for me. Boozer was much more fun to watch.

    4. Motorcycle dialog. Deacon screams to his NPCs when on the bike while the other person will be talking in a normal tone. Needs polishing.

Overall, I really enjoyed Days Gone and am excited to see how Bend Studio builds and improves in this new IP. Bring on the PS5!

Having just completed the game I am very glad I gave it a chance. There are some detractors, with minor bugs and glitches typical of large open world games, and some real frame rate issues in places (played in 4k on a PS4 Pro). But these don't take away from the experience.

For some, the pacing may feel a little slow, and the combat sluggish, but if you're looking to immerse yourself in an interesting and good looking open world game, and you're prepared to commit to pressing on through a long story with just a bit too much busy work, there is a definite payoff in terms of unravelling the mystery of the characters backstories and how the world ended, and some great open world exploration (on hog bikes no less) and combat gameplay to be had.

Surprisingly very good and atmospheric game! I released it on release, again a game about zombies and also hunting animals, which I really don't like. But I quickly made a purchase for game discounts as a result, I really liked the movement on motorcycles, a good plot and running from the hordes of Freaks. It was very interesting to find out the plot after the final with O'Brien, it's a pity that SONY does not give the continuation of the "green light" (((

Great game. Lots of hours of gameplay (I'm 12 hours in and not nearly finished playing) and the map gets bigger the further you get into the main storyline. The zombies keep terifying you and hordes are so, so dangerous. The only thing missing is weapon upgrades and the whole 'trust-level' thing in camps is a bit annoying. Other than that, this game is poorly judged by professional reviewers.

Its fun, after patch i have not seen any glitch, some mechanics feel clunky and the story is not that interesting at the beginning, however it delivers on many levels.

About 1/3 to half into the game. Solid 8. Bend Studios have been busy patching, I started from 1.02 or 03 don't remember, sure there has been some glitches in the story-telling but nothing that take away the fun in playing and a good story. Only reason for giving this game a low score is if you hate bugs and glitches - people who says they hate grinding must have hated witcher 3 as well. IAbout 1/3 to half into the game. Solid 8. **** gam. Another boring open world game, only this time on bike.
    - boring and repetitive quests
    - clunky
    - boring mc
    - horrible framerate on base PS4
    - annoying and most boring setting (zombies? yaaay..)
    - another loot/craft stupidity
    - hunting is shallow and not rewarding
    - empty open world

Days Gone looks and plays like Read Dead Redemption and The Last of Us had a baby and that baby rides a motorcycle.

The troubled launch of Days Gone has nothing to do with my playthrough. I saw a few bugs but really no more than I’ve seen in open world games like Read Dead Redemption. On the whole, Days Gone is a solid product. Shooting, melee, stealth, and motorcycle riding all feel good. The fundamentals are there. The story is also not bad, but don’t expect alternate paths and alternate endings. This sandbox has high walls.

First, the good. The zombies in this game are fun to kill. They are not technically zombies. Instead of supernatural beings, the “Freakers” are rabid humans. You don’t need to destroy their brain stems to kill them. You can run them over, burn them, explode them, beat them with a 2x4, or simply shoot them. By the end of the game, you will be shooting a lot of the zombies. Hordes of them. And it never stops being fun. You can also kill a large number of humans, and though the gunplay is well done, the humans are not as satisfying to take down as some of the more interesting zombies. Fair warning, the first few hours are a rocky first few hours. Trust me, though, the game opens up into a very fun experience.

Now, the bad. The game needed something more. You can see limitations immediately. The rank and file zombies only present themselves with 3 character models that have only 1 set of clothing each. The game design is also intent on making inventory management a nightmare. You can only carry 3 of each type of grenade, trap, or distraction device. Why not cary 9 pineapple grenades and none of the other? Nope. You can carry 3. And you can only carry so much of each kind of crafting material to make your own grenades. Very quickly, I stopped relying on crafted items and focused instead of buying ammo at camps. The game world tells you ammo is scarce. By the end of the game, you will be buying thousands of rounds of ammo on a whim. An open world sandbox game is always better when it embraces the power of player choice. Days Gone needed some more choices for something, anything, to set it apart from Red Dead Redemption in The Last of Us universe.

“Days Gone” really does have a The Last of Us feel to it. You have the dread, the artificial family, and even a few jokes to break the silence. And you have the zombies and crafting. I feel like the developer pitched this game as an open world game in The Last of Us universe and Sony said no. So the developer made their own kind of zombie instead. The premier mechanic in the game is the horde. Instead of sneaking around and fearing for your life, you take on hundreds of zombies at once. Yet I didn’t have the tools to fight a horde for the first 30 hours of playing this game. If the game introduced the horde mechanic earlier, I would have seen some unique potential to a “Days Gone” series. Instead, you almost have to finish the game to fight the hordes, and most players do not finish games. I can understand why Sony didn’t green light a “Days Gone 2”.

Full disclosure: I downloaded “Days Gone” for “free” with PlayStation Plus and played it on PS5. That means fast load times and 60fps. Sony also gave away Horizon Zero Dawn for free free last spring, and if you want to play one of the best open world games of all time, play that. (It is also 60fps on PS5). When you are done with Horizon Zero Dawn and want to shoot some zombies, give “Days Gone” a try. Tell ‘em Deke sent ya’.

The most UNDERRATED game of the last 5 years atleast. The game has a great story, great length, great amount of stuff to do and most importantly NOT POLTICALLY CORRECT. It's just an enjoyable, challenging, stealth, action, motorcycle driving, fun game.

Oh, and there's a ton of super fast, crazy zombies in it. A must play for action game lovers.

Better than most people give it credit for. Many have passed off on this game saying, it's not as good as last of us. Not all zombie games need to be like last of us to be good.

A slow burner at the beginning with the main character having a lot of rough edges, but that kind of personality fits well in a post apocalyptic setting. A fantastically tense game once you begin encountering the hoards. Am still hoping for a sequel, as really want to find out what happens next and the story hints were very intriguing

Bend Studio made a great game with a rich, believable and captivating story. They’ve also resisted the lure of trends: there’s no multiplayer, no lootboxes, no “game as a service” plans – just a very solid (and finite) singleplayer experience. That makes it a rare gem these days, maybe one of the last of its kind. [Issue#238, p.42]

At the beginning of the game you’ll feel like you've already played this game... then it will let you go for a while only to return with reinforcements (and lots of bugs). However, Days Gone has a couple of pleasant moments, that can't be denied. [Issue#295]

I expect and hope for a sequel. Just know that going into this game that there is a lot of tedious nonsense to pad out a really good game to make it feel more worth every dollar, much to its detriment. I want to give this game a better score because the best moments are so good, but the large portion of this game is so bloody tiring that I just can’t.
