Darksiders II has a lot going for it. There's an excellent art style, fast-paced combat, loot and RPG elements, massive boss battles, and of course, the Zelda inspired puzzle filled dungeons. If you like Zelda or action RPG's, Darksiders II should be interesting to you at the very least.

The story, one of the weaker aspects of the game, manages to be convoluted and thin. There are some cool characters, but I can't say I particularly cared about what was going on. Lots of, "Complete these tasks and I will tell you who to talk to in order to get further in your quest." Whatever. It's a good thing the other aspects of Darksiders II manages to make up for it.

That would be my basic summary of the game. The good outweighs the bad, and it's fun enough to recommend. Too bad it's a technical mess. What would be a 7 or 8 is now a 5 because I simply don't know if you'll have the patience to stick with it and see it through to its end. I didn't.

Game has several great features and the overall gameplay has not changed much since last, the story is mildly interesting, and the travel system is great which allows you to teleport out and in of dungeons. However, the game is riddled with bugs, which makes the game crash several times. Even had it crash on me at the final boss battle.

The game is a SLOG OF UNNECESSARY PUZZLES.

With the 1st title, the game had it's fair share of puzzle, but the pacing made up for those moments when you have to figure out just what to do. Sure, those puzzles went from 'simple' to 'this is gonna take a bit of time' but they always felt meaningful.

    Not with Darksiders II.

To be clear, none of the puzzles are hard (on a scale of 1-10 the hardest hovered around a 4), but the ungodly amount of them make playing this game unbearable at times. Every step, every place you go in the game is a puzzle in some way or another. Wanna cross that room? gotta deal with a puzzle. Want to get that door open? Puzzle. Ohh a treasure chest? PUZZLE!!!

The dungeons in this game are at most 20mins each....had not every, single, room be booby trapped with a puzzle. The padding is strong with this game. And if you think this is bad, get ready for the obnoxious backtracking for treasure and collectibles later in the game....and not have a good way to tell you where they are!

Combat can be satisfying....at times, when dealing with minor enemies, but once a "Stronger" version pops up in the mix, the fun ends. Both trees are superfluous as are gear choices. Not once did I feel strong or even up to the task in either tree, nor did special weapons or epic gear make a lick of difference.

The only redeeming factor for the game is the narrative, but that is consumed by all the other shortcomings. I couldn't finish it due to all the issues. In our day and age where I can hop online and read the story and conclusion (and watch it), DSII gets a hard pass. All the reasons I gave up on the title the first time (but not the 1st Darksiders which I enjoyed and finished) flooded back.

I hope THQ Nordic learned something from how this title helped sink the original THQ, but they are moving forward with the 3rd game and if it is ANYTHING with the 2nd, i'm out. Puzzles are fun, nothing but puzzles are not.

After finishing both remastered Darksiders games I'm surprised I didn't get into the series earlier, though Im actually glad as both remasters are superbly well done. Honestly I don't know why the overall scores on both games aren't higher. I know remasters are usually never as well received as the originals but anyone that missed the game the first time around would be an idiot not to try them on the current gen consoles.

Darksiders 2 is simply a great game but its not without its flaws. So here's the pros and cons

Visually the game is stunning. The art direction of all characters and scenery is brilliant, the textures in their remastered form are fantastic and something the game drips with is atmosphere.

Darksiders 2 is a significant evolution of the first game, Moving up from a linear hack n slash action game to a full on action RPG with the essential character skill building perks to accompany it also with alot more emphasis on open world level design. As did the first game Darksiders 2 borrows heavily from the God of War franchise with its brutally satisfying fast paced combat, the Prince of Persia franchise heavily influences the games platforming and dungeon crawling mechanics while The Legend of Zelda influence centers in the games puzzles and loot system. In this case that's not a bad thing at all, The Darksiders franchise may not have a single stab wound of originality in its whole body but it is the classic case of "What it does, It does **** well!"

The story is also another big feat for Darksiders 2, While the first games problem was that the story was present throughout the game though not properly told. Darksiders 2 bursts with story and lore the whole way keeping the player fully involved whilst leaving plenty to be explored and uncovered. The character of Death is also a great character to play as. Whilst War was a fun character to play as in the first game his boring dialogue and dry monotone voice acting was a huge let down. Deaths character however is the complete opposite, The acting is perfectly executed with vibrance and dynamics which at times even make Death a witty and somewhat charming figure.

The cons however; As a remaster Deathinitve edition isn't quite as well polished as Warmastered edition (Which is odd that this one was done first.) The textures and resolution are top notch of course running at pristine 1080P the whole time but the frame rates tops at 30fps most of the time occasionally dropping below. If it had run at 60fps like Warmastered does it would have been fantastic.

Also oddly enough the remaster doesn't appear to have fixed the issues that players were complaining with the original game. Audio issues crop up frequently where sounds of approaching enemies are always too loud and at the center of the mix making it impossible to tell the direction they are coming from. The grip detection with the platforming is at times horrendous making what could be easy scenery to traverse quite difficult. The convoluted controls and erratic camera problems also make platforming alot more of a task than it needs to be. The combat within small spaces also makes the camera behave like it has epilepsy.

Lastly one of the fine perks with the first game was environmental diversity with the scenery puzzles and boss fights, this does exist in Darksiders 2 as well but not as much. Darksiders 2 essentially has 5 main sandboxes within the main overworld and while the scenery varys dirastically between each of them, Everything from enemy types, dungeons, puzzles and bosses remain consistant to each area which the player often has to spend long periods of time in before moving on which is enough time for a feeling of monotony to sink in.

However these are but mere speed bumps in what is otherwise an epic 30 hour adventure with the DLC packs to keep you tied over afterwards. GET THIS GAME, Nordic needs to hear our calls for Darksiders 3.

Based on what I had heard about the game and what I read from the case, I expected a thrilling action game. What I got was a boring platformer.

The game itself boasts about its 30-hours of gameplay, and it's true, but only because it has been designed

You're Death and your quest is to save your brother by solving simple puzzles and climbing walls. Oh, and occasionally you kill enemies.

The game itself boasts about its 30-hours of gameplay, and it's true, but only because it has been designed to slow you down at every moment.
You'll first notice that the overworld is huge. It seems like there's all kind of secrets to find and epic quests to do. After a while you'll realise that there's nothing much in it and you'd rather fast travel everywhere. But alas, even fast travel doesn't work like you'd expect. Instead of taking you to directly to the point you wanted to, it'll take you a little further away, so you'll spend some extra time running to where you wanted to get.

The puzzles are very simple and I didn't really get stuck anywhere, but there's a lot of them. They range from simple climbing to where you need to go to pulling levers and stepping on pressure plates.
After each puzzle you'll feel happy and think "I sure hope there's no more of these boring puzzles" and then some character asks you to find 3 items to proceed.. This happens quite often.

The platforming part of the game kinda feels out of place. There are very specific parts you can grab on and trying to climb anything else is impossible. This is stupid because it means that if there's a platform that you need to climb, it's often possible to climb it from one side only. This means that if you quickly looked around, you probably missed the climbable part and waste time trying to figure out what to do.
Also, even if Death can climb a wall (wall run), he can't grab on the ledge to climb up. Even if he is half his height over it.

INVISIBLE WALLS everywhere to prevent you from climbing where you're not supposed to. Want to use a shortcut to jump down? Too bad since most of the time there's a small fence and Death can't jump on it.

Shopping is useless. All the loot you can buy tends to be worse than what you find from enemies, so there's no need to buy anything other than potions.

Fighting is quite enjoyable, but there's much less of it than there are puzzles. One part of the game was focused on fighting (and you even got a machine gun from an angels corpse!) and that was the best part of the whole game. After that you return to puzzles.

I did expext the Deathinitive version to be as bug free as possible, but there were quite a few of them.
Some times you slightly teleport after a cutscene, sometimes the music and sound effects stop completely and sometimes if you're really lucky, the game crashes after a bossfight.

I want to say I loved the first one, characters were interesting, gameplay was fun and diverse from the ground combat, the flying sections, the gauntlet stages it was all a good mix and that's not even touching the weapons. But this is not Darksiders 1, this is it's much more retarded brother that can't do basic things right like camera control, dodge roll or counter higher than fingers on a single hand.

Others have mentioned the issues with the "puzzles" which I don't consider them puzzles as much as chores. Jumping is not a complicated mechanic but when you have to fight with the camera to see where you're going or you jump holding down one direction and Death decides to check for fall damage on the side of a mountain it's a "puzzle" all of on it's own. Combat is garbage, you have mobs that are olympic ice skaters that slide over the ground to hit you, mobs that you can dodge roll away or even behind and still take damage and the summon ghouls which is worthless as they take one hit from any threatening mob and evaporate faster than water in the Australian desert.

Very good update of a great past game. Loved it the first time and loving it this time too. Obviously would have been great to include the first Darksiders but that aside everyone should try this. Hasn't been enough games like this over past few years. If you ever played the soul reaver series this is that sort of action game. I really hope they do a third game I've bought every one!

ARE YOU F*CKIN SERIOUS THQ??? This is a remaster, so your second shot at this one. The bug was well known in the community and there is no fix for it? Come on. I went to gamestop to trade this piece of trash in on the same day. Things like that really grind my gears. You buy a broken game, the developer knows the issue but has no intentions in fixing it.

Despite all my complaints about Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, I appreciated the unique style and setting. Darksiders 2 only as a portion of that magic. Most of the game is spent wall running and jumping to solve environmental puzzles. The puzzles are brought to a mind-numbing extreme and I longed for more fights so my thumbs had something to do. The fights themselves are stale with the Ninja Gaiden style roll-attack-roll gameplay.

I cannot help but think of God of War III: Remastered. The original God of War III was released 2 years before Darksiders 2 and certainly had the benefit of seeing what God of War III could accomplish. Fighting feels similar in that it is a mix of button mashing and dodging. Except God of War III had more button mashing tricks. The environmental puzzles are also similar, except the environments in God of War III are insane. The environments in Darksiders 2 feel like the same ruins with handy ledges, posts, and vines for vertical traversal. It all feels too familiar and dare I say, too easy.

You can see the intended scope. Some areas are large enough to border on an open world. Some bosses are enormous multi-phase fights. One sequence lets you shoot your way through as hybrid Call of Duty. This is where Darksiders 2 failed. Quanity should never be put before quality. Finishing the game, I had places left to explore and DLC left to start but I did none of it. By the time the the credits rolled, I was sick of this game.

Some of my problem with Darksiders 2 is an acquired lack of patience. There was a time when I would spend hours exploring every pixel of digital world. One time in the game Thief, I stacked boxes to see if I could get out of the map. People still do this and I am sure that someone is overjoyed to have a world like Darksiders 2 to explore. Not me. I see some unique wall feature and know that it is something that open up eventually, when I have unlocked another gadget. I also know that I will never come back to it. Maybe the team making the environments was just so much larger than the team that made interesting encounters.

The story and dialogue of Darksiders 2 is so-so. Characters come and go with little explanation other than to serve as vendors. Ever story point is broken into three lost things that need finding because it means more hallways to explore. By the end, I didn't really care why I was doing any of it and Death himself expresses this feeling "I've come to the end of my journey and I have no idea what I am supposed to do!".

All-in-all, Darkisders 2 is a decent game. I just shouldn't be at the top of your pile.

Expand

Its definetly better than firs game. RPG things works good for this frenchise. Also death is more awsome and intresting than war.

The game is great, but the re-release could have been done better. It is strange to see the first re-release of the part at 60fps, but this one can be seen in the sagging 30 ... Thanks at least the resolution is increased by Ps4 Pro. Also disappointing was the lack of choice of English voice acting + Russian subtitles. Again, in the first part, everything is fine with this. I bet 8 just for the sake of a lot of respect for this game and a warm attitude towards the series in general and to support similar games. And so ayyayyay to developers. Expand

If you're going to waste the player's time with vast open spaces with nothing to see and repeating cutscenes with nothing to hear you'd want to make sure it's not a glitch that is keeping you from progressing. The camera is broken and holding the lock-on trigger is ridiculous. How does a game this bloated with junk feel so empty? Puzzles are the only positive but they're too few and far between.

Borderlands.

Everything about this game is pretty flawless. Whether it be the phenomenal soundtrack, character & boss & enemy design, the gameplay (the combat system is extremely good), just everything is perfect, and this is easily one of my favorite games of all times.

Expand

Not the best looking remaster of a 6th gen console videogame but it's nice to be able to get the entire Darksiders II experience in one bundle and it still plays well on my ps4 pro

    Number of playthroughs: Lost count
This game series is one of my favorite of all time. I love each and every entry.
As the first game in the series, it does a great job of hooking people in with its interesting story, characters, and most important of all its combat.
The original soundtrack and the map design is great as well
Recently got the Blade and Whip edition on PS4 and played it again.

Second issue is the story , personally i found it little odd as we know death ( the main character) try to find a way to save his brother as we know his is innocent but and he face some obstacle in the way but you don't feel that, what you feel an empty story with empty world has no life on it .
I really wish it was little like darksider 1 or 3 which have thier own direction not copy paste from RPG which was the primal in that year . Combat is good and monster level scale also fine.
Death really cool characters but they didn’t write it well .

After so many years, so many reports to developers, THE GAME STILL CRASHES. This is not a game that should be allowed in PS4. A game crashing? Are you serious?

If they resolved the problem after seeing so many opinions and players reviews.mm But, nope, the developers didn't care about the players. That's why I evaluate with 0!

This game took the RPG element and boosted it compared to Darksiders and that brought me down. Weapons and armor now had a level and if I remember correctly you had to be the correct level to use it. The gameplay got stale a lot quicker for me with this aspect at around 45% into the game.

This is very nearly the exact same single-player excursion from last-gen consoles. There is no local or online co-op. There's no traditional multiplayer. There are no update-exclusive features. It's simply a mildly prettier, equally flawed action title with a few pieces of DLC adding more of the same to an already samey package.

A heated dish, like all remastered games are, with all its interesting condiments now displeasing instead of exciting the patron, but with its main part still being juicy and tasty. A game with a core able to attract all fans of the action-adventure genre, but with many technical flaws. Is such a remaster truly an improvement upon the image of the franchise or beneficial to those who have not yet… tasted it? It is up to you to decide.

The Deathinitive Edition improves very little, but Darksiders II is still a fantastic game definitely worth checking out if you haven’t done so 3 years ago. [13/2015, p.59]
