Expand

In many ways the true sequel to the first Dark Souls. Follows up on a lot of those concepts and mechanics and improves many of them. This has the best boss fights in the series in my opinion. Amazing music, amazing map designs, great build variety, engaging lore and exciting combat. Challenging, but fair.

In fact, out of the entire Soulborne series, this game probably has the most punishing first 5 hours. Even as a vet I can sense that the developers are trying their best to mess with our expectations.
Returning fans who missed a few Dark Souls / Bloodborne games may be discouraged from the first 5 hours and think things like "Oh man I might be too old for this series", well, IT GETS EASIER so press on my Sunbro!

As always, don't expect a lot of exposition in this series, the story is basically what you can figure out from the bits and pieces of lore you find in the game. NPC Questlines are therefore vague and you can easily void questlines and the damage is irreversible until your next playthrough. I highly recommend using fextralife online wiki to get the full experience without trial and error for hundreds of hours on your own, unless of course, that is your thing.

The music, again, is nonexistent unless you are at your home camp, or during boss fights. None of them are memorable, that doesn't mean it's bad, it's mostly because you are too focused trying to fight/survive the bosses to pay too much attention to the music. They do make the fights feel epic though and every piece is fitting.

As for difficulty, I gotta say Bloodborne is still harder due to its core combat mechanics being more reflex/muscle memory based. However, you CAN make it harder than Bloodborne for yourself if you do a no-shield, no-cheese run.

PVP is still the same ol' Dark Souls pvp. I like it enough to do it for Covenant rewards.

Only gripe is the new Covenant system for some of the covenants. It's fundamentally flawed, and on top of that I think the matchmaking for them is currently broken. It effectively locks me out of Platinum because I can't get auto-matched...with the only alternative being grinding in PVE at low drop rates which isn't a very fun way to go about doing it. I mean, I see why they have the low drop rates, so they could get more people to participate in PVP...but when the matchmaking is barely working it's just bad all around.

All in all, this game is great and is worthy of being the swan song of the series, and the finale reminds us of all we have achieved in the series.

It's probably the best Dark Souls game. Certainly miles better than 2 but we knew that would be the case going in.

Not QUITE as good as Bloodborne but Bloodborne is a legit masterpiece of gaming. It may end up being From's best game of all time unless they top it with a sequel (surely that's what's next for the team?).

Graphics are a little dull in places early in the game and stunning as you progress.

Some nice shout out and remasters from DS1 that players of the original will enjoy seeing again with current gen graphics. Some people are complaining about it but for me I love seeing a few familiar bits and pieces brought up to date.

A lot of different enemies, again the balance is a little off and some are too hard and others not hard enough but they'll get the balance right with the next update.

Starts off a little slow with armor sets but gets more interesting as you get into the game.

If you're a souls fan just stick with it. It pays off once the ball starts rolling but it was a good 10 hours before I really started to enjoy the game as much as Bloodborne or DS1.

If you liked the other games in the series, you'll likely be right at home here. The only caveat I would add is that if you haven't played the earlier Souls games, but are instead coming from Bloodborne, be wary that this is a very different game in terms of the pace of combat. Some Bloodborne players will find the change jarring and will lose interest in the slower pace found here.

Going back to the sleeper hit that bred this beast demons souls . From is known for their difficult games . This however should not be the draw if you are new to the series . There is a whole lot here for you to delve into . Story telling is told through item descriptions , npc conversations as well as some fantastic environmental storytelling . It's all there if you want or care to look for it .

As stated earlier I am a huge from fan as these are the games I had dreamed of playing in my childhood . While playing Zelda and castlevania and the like I had never thought gaming would come so far as it has . Upon firing dark souls 3 up you will be greeted with a cutscene . After this you will be prompted to create a character from a starting class . After you have completed this you will be thrust into the bonfire so to speak . The first area of the game is basically a tutorial teaching you the nuances of this game . For me personally I had to retrain myself from my overly aggressive bloodborne play style that however was the nature of that beast . Be advised you will face 2 bosses in your opening 5 minutes of play time one of these is optional . Combat is still fast paced and brutal here but still has that souls special sauce and flavor from fans crave .

The combat creature design level design and sound are all out of this world and personally to me this is what from has become known for and deservedly so . Fans of previous games will see familiar sights and people as well as other nods to previous from titles . Gone is the disconnected mess that was dark souls 2 you will find some intricate pathways that loop around in and under locations in the game . While still not as groundbreaking or brilliant as the originals level design I would say it's easily on par with bloodborne . That is really saying something .

To those who are on the fence about this game . Do not be intimated ! Yes there is a lot to learn and wrap your head around but it is well worth the effort . From respects the player probably more than anyone else in the industry . They want you to succeed they believe In you and give you the tools to achieve it . The community to this game has its jerks but the majority has been vary welcoming to me and much like from they want to see you do well ! Two of the best feelings in gaming can be found right here and they are the feelings you get from felling a giant foe that fills your tv screen or teaming up with 2 friends to the do the same and explore Lothric together .

So the later part of my review was for people who've never played these games for those that have you will be pleased . I think this just may be my favorite from game to date it is by far most definitely my favorite souls game . The creature design , the weapons , the absolutely gorgeous sights this game wants you to drink it in to take your time and really dig into it if you do you are in for one of the most rewarding and unique experiences in your life . It won't all be sunshine and rainbows and the game will try to stomp you down but stick it out put effort into it and you too will join the legion of sun bros and girls . Now stop reading this tripe and go and praise the sun !!

Having said that I loved Dark Souls 3 personally!

Yes its hard, yes its frustrating and yes its sometimes a little annoying too but jeez is it addictive! FromSoftware rewards players that take their time to study the environment and enemies and come up with a strategy. Learning from WHY you died is the most important thing here.

If you want a super engaging cool story-line play GTA. If you want near perfect graphics play Uncharted.

If you want an awesome combat RPG that's ridiculously hard but makes you keep coming back for more until you kill that sucker, then play Dark Souls 3. Be prepared to commit 50+ hours to get through it.

    Gameplay

The Combat mechanics are what you would expect from a Souls game, only slightly refined, and the addition of weapon arts is a fun new wrinkle that adds depth to each of the weapons. The exploration is one of the highlights of any From game, and DS3 is no exception. peaking around a corner only to find a rare piece of equipment, or perhaps a Titanite source is always a reviling moment. Or perhaps fighting through tough enemies to reach a drop that benefits you greatly. The sense of scope is also back, with paths that connect, and being able to look down upon a path you just traveled through hours before is satisfying.

    Story

The lore is as always obtuse, and cryptic, however it is there if you chose to look, and listen. The game is not to hard to grasp but the further you poke your nose the more engrossed you become with the world. Also for souls veterans such as myself there are many callbacks to the original DS that will make any fan happy, and surprised.

    Presentation

The Graphics are nice, and while it wont blow you away, the different locales, and the variety of environments makes it so you never get bored. For the most part the game ran smooth on PS4, but there were some moments of frame-rate dips, and slowdowns in certain areas/fights.

Overall Dark Souls 3 is an excellent send off to the series, and one that seems like a love letter to fans once the credits roll, and any souls fans will enjoy the ride till the fire fades.

Not a lot of customization or replayability compared to a game like Call of Duty Advanced Warfare - Except for the dozens of sets of armor, swords, axes, bows, crossbows, staffs, halberds, pole arms, daggers, spells, wands. All of which can be leveled, imbued with different magics, and mixed and matched.

The bosses are some of the most epic fights of all the series, they really focused on making sure everyone of them stood out. there are maybe two or three bosses that maybe could have been done better but they you can tell that a lot of effort was put into them this time around. All of the classes are fun to play as and allow you to adjust to that playing style fairly quickly, the gameplay is way more fluid than that of Dark Souls 2, and probably one of it's most defining features is that it's absolutely beautiful. The environments are gorgeous, the world is atmospheric and detailed, and it's easily one of the prettiest games I've ever played.

One big change I've noticed, not just from Dark Souls 2, but all of the games in the series, is that I'm loving the characters. I won't spoil anything because you need to see it for yourself, so I'll just say that I was actually interested in what they had to say to me.

Now for the big question: is Dark Souls 3 hard?. I'm here to say that yes. It is. In fact, it's the hardest game in the series, meaning that if you play the game for the challenge, you're in for a treat. Once again, I don't want to spoil anything, but as you would expect, the hardest part of the game is the bosses, which are probably the game's best moments.

Overall, Dark Souls 3 doesn't live up to the name of Dark Souls 1, but it's still a MASSIVE improvement on the very disappointing Dark Souls 2. If this really is the last game in the series, it's a worthy send-off to the series. 9/10 (I wish i could give 9.5).

Dark Souls 3 would be a masterpiece if it wasn't by some fails here and there, but I can assure, at least for myself, it's the best in the series and one of the best games I've ever played.

From Software has done a great job designing Lothric from the shacks in the Undead Settlement, to libraries and towers in Lothric Castle. The game has a fantastic pacing to the game and even the exploration is good.

The bosses have taken a note from Bloodborne, now having multiple stages to the encounter. You will get a boss to either 50% or kill them just for them to come back stronger then ever for round two. Most bosses bring out that excitement when fighting them, trying to figure out their pattern and when to attack, but some feel dull and lackluster, but fortunately it is more of earlier bosses then later.

Another change From Software has changed is the death system, as you will die...a lot. As in previous games you would slowly lose maximum health as you hollow until you use an item to reverse it. Here you are unkindled, one to bring the lords back to their thrones. When you die, you will not hollow unless you start a specific quest. Instead when you die you lose your cinders and your max health will decrease to its normal amount. To recover from this, you can either kill a boss (either in your own game or another's) or use a ember. Embers are hard to come by in your own game as they are a limited resource, but when you kill a boss in coop play, not only do you recover your cinders, you will also normally get an ember. It seems that this really encourages coop play as much as the pvp.

Unfortunately though, the game is not perfect. It suffers from some of the dull bosses i had mentioned before, but also a few slowdowns in more intense areas just as Bloodborne before it.

Besides its few minor flaws, the game is fantastic, a must buy for any From Software or RPG fan.

I have 0 regrets, because it is a great game that we have here.

Now in this review i will not compare this game with previous ones, but i will give a genuine review for someone that is new to the series. I must also say that i played the game completely offline since i have no ps plus subscription. I will divide this review based on what i liked and didn't like in this game.
So what parts of dark souls 3 i really liked??

-Difficulty: Before starting the game i thought that people exagerated regarding the difficulty in this game, for someone who beated witcher 3 in max difficulty this game will be a piece of cake i thought..........how wrong i was xD. The first 10 hours were sooooo hard for me, the first boss in the tutorial area i think that i died at least 10 times, in the wall of lothric i really suffered at the hand of those bastard knights. I died...again...and again, until the 3rd or 4th boss the game was being really frustrating for me. BUT as soon as i started getting used to the enemies and the game mechanics is started really enjoying this game, i still died a lot of times in boss battles but now instead of getting frustrated i tried to learn the enemies mechanics...and the feeling that i had when i finaly won a boss fight is nothing that i ever experienced in another game. If this game was easy i am sure that the score would at least fall to 7.

-Combat: skill matters in this game, you can have the best armour and weapons in this game but the trashiest enemies can still **** you up. You can never underestimate an enemy in dark souls 3, and i always fight in maximum against 2/3 enemies at a time. The weapon skills were pretty nice too. And the boss design was outstanding, i had so much fun (and headaches xD) fighting them.

-Lore: the lore in this game is hidden in every item that you find in dark souls 3, and how great it is, it was something that i was not expecting in this kind of game. By paying attention of the world that surrounded me i could learn a lot about each location, that was covered in mystery.

-Character creation: I know that in most of times your character is hidden behind a helmet, but still the character creator sure impressed me, especially the tattoos!

-Leveling system: The idea of becoming stronger has you obtain more souls from your dead enemies is pretty nice. There are also a lot of different attributes regarding your character so you can make a lot of builds! In my playthrough i played as a mercenary, wielding a curved swords and a medium shield, but in my next playthrough i am thinking in playing as a herald, who uses various miracles (a type of magic in this game) and has a nice spear!

-Art/Graphics: the representation of a world after the apocalypse is very cool, the churches, the castles, the views, everything is very good looking. The graphics are outstanding too.

Now what i did not like so much in this game:

Story: Now don't get me wrong, the lore is amazing but i think that there is a really waste of potencial in this game regarding the story. I believe that if the game had more cutscenes, with more interesting characters, i believe that the experience would be better. I would like to see more npc's with different and depth backstories, the ones you find i think that they are very bland.

Depressing ending:(SPOILERS) In my ending i linked the first flame, but the flame was already very weak so all my fights during the game were futile, so much sacrifice for in the end the world fall in the age of the dark (which is not necessarily bad, it depends on each person interpretation), you completed your mission that was to link the flame....but in the end it was all in vain. Now don't get me wrong, there is beauty in this ending, but i would like a more shining ending after all the battles that we had. And basically this ending is a 30 second cutscene which is a bit of a letdown.

Overall: A great experience, i have never played a game of this kind, it is very different from normal action-rpg's. Before starting my next playthrough i am viewing youtube videos about the lore in this game, because there were quite some things that i missed and didn't understand in my 1st playthrough.
So i am really excited to do again a new journey with a different character/build and this time i will be more alerted to the world that surrounds me in dark sous 3 :).

EDIT: I am updating my review to give it a 8.5~9. My second playthrough was even more rewarding, i learned more secrets about this world that escape me the first time. The best thing of this game is that you are never bored while playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is easily the best game in the whole "SolulsBorne" series. I don't think that 5000 characters is enough to comprehend it's amazing aspect, so i'll just stick to the standard "pros and cons" system.
    PROS:
-the graphics are AMAZING. The textures still suck but From used a handful of visual effects to make the graphics look great.
-sound effects have always been a big part of the series, and this game definitely lives up to it's predecessors.
-combat is at satisfying and rewarding as ever.
-the lore, the lore! Everything you do feels like you really are taking part in the world around you.
-it's difficult yet fair at the same time. 90% of the time you got killed because you made a fatal mistake.
-the bosses are creative and smart. Less dudes in armor, more wicked beasts and gruesome remains of what might have been an everyday human being once. (*cough cough Dancer of the Boreal Valley *cough*)
-almost every area is connected. For example, in Farron Keep you can get on the other side of the destroyed bridge you've visited in the beginning of the game.
-a whole truckload of miscellaneous items and weapons. I still have no idea what half of them do.
-incredible soundtrack. Boy, does the music hit you hard.
    -coop! As good as ever.
-PVP! Just like i said above.
-the secrets are incredible, and everytime i find something hidden i feel like a medieval Indiana Jones.
    -many, many more.
    CONS
-the hitboxes still suck a huge gorilla dong. Remember when i said that your deaths are fair 90% of the time? The remaining 10% hits you in the least expected moments.
-don't even get me started on PVP connection issues. I hate getting backstabbed by a player 10 meters away.
-some of the bosses are laughably easy, most of them you meet during first 20 hours of the game. (i'm looking at you, big skeleton dude and cathedral bishop dudes)
-level design. I know it's like a tradition in SoulsBorne, but some of the levels are just too damn confusing.

First, a disclaimer: Even though the DLC for this game is out, this review will be covering Dark Souls 3's base game specifically. Dark Souls 3 is an Action RPG by From Software in the style of Demon Souls, as well as Dark Souls 1 & 2. This game follows behind an underrated classic, what is considered one of the best action RPG games of all time, and Dark Souls 2. So how does it stack up? I personally believe Dark Souls 3 is the best in the series (including Bloodborne). Let's start with the least important stuff about the game, and work up to the stuff that makes Dark Souls Dark Souls. First off, and least importantly: Graphics. The game graphically looks beautiful, far better than even Bloodborne. I stood in awe for 3 or 4 minutes upon first entering Irithyll. The Profaned Capitol, Archdragon Peak, and the previously mentioned Boreal Valley look absolutely stunning. The bosses all have unique looks that compliment the level and world they're in beautifully. Next: The sound. The sound in this game is very good overall, with amazing music for bosses and interesting tracks for the hub world and menus. I wish the enemy's sound design was a bit more varied, but it's quite good other than that (-1 pt.) Next up: The story. This game's story takes the usual Dark Souls approach of mainly being thrown out in Item Descriptions and cryptic dialogue. The items in this game are plentiful, and there are many intricate and well thought out stories and backstories, as Dark Souls usually contains. Your story takes place long past the events of the first two games, a fact reflected through the items and a few amazing late game events that I won't spoil. You have to kill a bunch of crazies who either lit the fire before you, or were supposed to and decided "Nah". You're helped out by a bunch of tragic characters along the way, and it retains the grim, oppressive atmosphere that Souls does better than most. Now, most importantly: The Gameplay. The DS3 gameplay is just as tight and fluid as previous installments that aren't Dark Souls 2. Everything is responsive, the bosses are almost all well done, one even likely taking the spot as my favorite all time boss (The Abyss Watchers). And, while the PvE game is the best we may have ever seen, the PvP suffers from a few series-wide issues. First off: lag. Every game has lag, but Dark Souls is too fast to really be able to afford too much of it. This is unfortunately something they didn't iron out in Dark Souls 3, so prepare for a lot of deaths from players teleportation around the map with what feels like an AOL port of Dark Souls 3. This isn't to say that lag is always there, but it's a prevalent issue. Also, like every Dark Souls game, there are some 40 pieces of armor and weapons that From decided to just not put into the game. This wouldn't bother me so much if one of the sets of armor wasn't the Giants Set, effectively ruining my DS3 Giant Dad experience. (-1 pt) So, is the game worth it? Hell yeah it is! The game is 60$, but it's often on sale for less than half that much. Even at full price, however, this game is more than worth it. Expand

Graphically it's a very good game, you'll find much better graphics in other titles, but the atmosphere and soundtrack are incredible. I personally didn't understand the lore of the game, but after I finished my first walkthrough I read a few forums and blogs and so I understood a little more. But partly is because if you haven't played Dark Souls before you won't understand much, even so, many people still doesn't understand it! And don't get me wrong, I don't blame FromSoftware here, they made a really different game and for that I appreciate them.

Besides not understanding much of the lore, if it's your first DS, you will suffer with the first boss, the gameplay is really different from anything you know. A side from that, in my first walkthrough, only two or three bosses gave me problems, the rest were much more manageable.

The game itself is complicated, progress is slow and tedious, you're always in tension, because as soon as you relax you die. But given how easy are games nowadays, I thank to suffer a little bit and remember what is high difficulty.

Online is harsh, I'll tell you that, there are really good players out there, I managed to kill some, but it's not my thing. Even so I played online both walkthroughs and gave fair fights.

My recommendation is to play it if you haven't already done so, but don't expect to understand the lore, and the first boss... give it many tries and patience, he will end up going down, from there everything gets better. Every boss is a new challenge, and boy does it feel good when they die!

    Praise the sun!

Everyone talked about how hard this game is, I honestly thought it was exaggeration. But it is hard. Technically hard. It's not unfair though. The game demands attention, intelligence and dedication. It will punish you if you don't display these characteristics. But there is nothing more satisfying than having been beaten down by a boss a number of times, to finally have everything 'click' and overcome the fight.

The game is great to look at, and it sounds even better, a very epic soundtrack, and fitting for the setting.

This game certainly isn't for everyone. If you're a long time fan, there's no need to convince you. But, if you're on the fence and have never played DS, I would recommend it if you're willing to be methodical and patient. You won't be disappointed.

Outstanding. Best gameplay I have experienced on this generation so far. It's dark souls gameplay evolved with a touch of bloodborne. All players who enjoyed bloodborne, this is the next step.

Those who didn't like bloodborne because it's too hard. Forget dark souls 3. It is harder than bloodborne.

Dark Souls 3 encapsulates the essence of both dark souls and bloodborne in a way that feels almost seamlessly fluid. The environment in Dark Souls 3 is a blatant mixture of both games in a commonly not so subtle way. Many early game weapons are versatile enough to be able to be used until very late game content, like the long sword for example. Bosses in dark souls 3 are no less brutal than it's predecessors either. Right off the bat, you are thrust into an intense fight with a large knight, and then when you think you've figured him out, he transforms into another monster entirely and forces the player to change their tactics and rethink their strategy. This is a theme that is held all the way through the game and forces the player to become a quick thinker or be punished. And that is the beauty of the game. A game that forces the player to get better without any handicaps to help you succeed is exactly what the souls series has thrives off of for years and this is no different. Sadly, now that dark souls has successfully made it to the mainstream more and more people are playing, which means there are more casual gamers that will give the game a bad name and call it unfair even though it's just them not understanding the concept of the game, and also drive away many of the experienced souls veterans who partially love the game because of it's exclusivity.
In a completely unbiased review, Dark Souls 3 is near perfect for souls standards but doesn't' deserve a 10 because it doesn't just borrow from it's previous titles, but straight up steals from it by literally recreating areas from previous games and npc's as well, and although this is cool for nostalgia, it is also very uncreative. Along with that, some of the level design is questionable. That being said, besides recreated levels and some questionable level design choices, dark souls 3 has reminded me the scope of the original, while also maintaining some modern flair

It is remarkable dedication that has had " from software " with this game, but there are some problems in graphics and game balance defects , fortunately are not as frequent as to ruin the experience .

I think the graphic limitations on consoles, only demonstrates that the hardware is obsolete long ago, Dark Souls does not run at 60 FPS but still looks great . On a PC it looks like it deserves.

Definitely an exemplary souls game. If you liked Dark Souls 1 or Demon's Souls, this is a bit better. Dark souls 2 is barely better but if I played all Souls game for the first time, I would say DS2 is the best (behind bloodborne if that counts), then DS3, then DS1 and Demon's Souls

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a fantastic DS game.

I love Bloodborne and DS1, hated DS2, and I've never played Demon Souls, if that gives you any indication of what this game is like.

I'll say this, if you're still deciding on whether or not to buy the game because you loved Bloodborne, please reconsider. This game is NOT Bloodborne. It's a fantasy style game SIMILAR to Bloodborne. However, where BB encourages you to be aggressive and offensive (regain health through attack, larger weapons, overpowered melee damage, no shields, more healing items, Etc.) Dark Souls is a very defensive series. Whether you're using a shield, timing your spell casts, or dodging attacks, Dark Souls encourages you to think about each encounter, instead of just rushing through.

this game fixes a lot of the problems that I had with DS2. Namely, the stats are balanced in much the same way as DS1, and the hollowing system has been modified so much it can hardly be considered the same mechanic.

If you have problems with the first boss, I feel sorry for you. The game does take getting used to, but the first boss might be the easiest boss I've ever fought. The controls are unique, so if this is your first souls game, I recommend reading ALL the comments during the tutorial area,.

This game is not supposed to be "hard". It's as difficult as you make it for yourself. Please don't buy this game because you think that beating it will get you bragging rights. It's a fantastic and beautiful fantasy adventure that happens to teach you by killing you.

I do have criticisms of this game. Yorhm was a disappointment, as the way to beat him is standing feet away from him, and when you get the item, he's dead in a few hits. I feel that the bosses overused some iffy mechanics, such as the often repeated "you thought the fight was over? PSYCH! second phase." and "My attacks are obvious, so dodge them all in succession to hit me."

The only reason I am not going to give it a 10 is because one of the multiplayer aspects of the game. When one is summoned in the souls games, and die while summoned, one does not lose any souls. So I was pretty upset to learn that in Souls III my (very expensive) ring of sacrifice was broken upon dying while summoned. This should not happen unless I die in my own world, as in the last two games. I was pretty put out about that when it happened. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that this is a small oversight that will eventually be rectified in later patches. Other than that, this game is amazing. Great story lines for the various NPC's, amazing rendering on the landscapes, huge and sprawling expansive areas in which to treasure hunt, fun armor and weapon sets to play around with, and wonderfully imaginative and challenging boss fights! Bravo! Expand

Compared to DS1, online play feels alot smoother. I've never been hit from 10 meters away, I've never gotten hit while rolling and there have been very, VERY few times where the other player is in the same pose moving around.

Overall a must for anyone who isn't very fond of the souls games and wants to give it a try. I even wanna try demon souls after gaining experience through this one, though going from the decent graphics in this game to the Playstation 2 graphical fidelity from Demon souls is gonna be tough.

The game also provides you with great satisfaction from defeating bosses, clearing areas and gaining special items, there is no doubt that it does not hold your hand, however, if investigated closely, you can see that many things in the game can be bypassed through trial and error, I have found that in most of my adventures within the world of Lothric, most of my deaths were due to my own mistakes, and I found it entertaining to figure out different methods and routes to victory.

Dark Souls 3 also provides fantastic homage to the Dark Souls series to keep long-time fans interested, Action RPG fans will not want to miss out on this one.

Personally, this game gets one point off due to the PvP feeling a unbalanced. That doesn't shade the fact that the game has amazing music, great references to previous games, and even the best PvE and Co-op in the entire series. Hopefully, though, they fix all the bugs and errors and make this a game to remember 100% fondly.

Trust me, the game’s tagline isn’t “Prepare to Die” for nothing. It is a game where no one has a happy ending especially your character (most likely). From Software has done it again. This game is a great way to end off the Souls trilogy while being maybe the best game in the series. A minor warning: this game is very sad and depressing.

Dark Souls 3 takes place in the kingdom of Lothric at the end of an era but it’s not just that, it’s also the end of the age of fire, pretty much the end of the world. In Dark Souls 3 you play as the “Ashen One”. Your only purpose in life is to prolong the age of fire by killing the four Lords of Cinder. They are Aldrich the Saint, The Abyss Watchers, Yhorm the Giant, and Lothric the prince who is named after the kingdom. All of this is explained in the opening cinematic. Your character wakes up in a graveyard and you start the game. This isn’t a game that has a huge story. A lot of the lore you find in item descriptions and are up to your own interpretation.

Dark Souls is probably most famous for its bosses and as usual From Software has made another great batch of bosses which are all accompanied with their own score of music composed by a whole choir. Also, don’t worry about difficulty. This game is extremely tough! And due to their extreme difficulty after defeating them, every boss gives you an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment. The gameplay is fluid and easy to learn but hard to master. An important new addition is how fast-paced the combat is compared to the other games. This game is also very pretty. It has great graphics and runs great with minor frame rate issues. There are a lot of gigantic set pieces that made my jaw drop when I saw them. Although I have to say some of the bosses do border on unfair.

This game might be perfect in my eyes but I can definitely see why some others might think it terrible. The game is hard and unforgiving and it’s way too dark and difficult for younger kids so don’t get this for a 10 year old on his birthday because he might break a controller or two. But if you have the patience and like a good challenge and weaving your own interpretation of a story then this game is definitely for you. I think this game is near perfect but mainly because of the frame rate issues and the slightly unfair bosses it is held back from being a masterpiece.

    Pros
    Great gameplay/combat
    Great graphics
    Unique story
    Great replayability
    (mostly)Great bosses
    Epic soundtrack
    Cons
    Frame rate issues
    Might seem unfair at times

Welcome to the world of Dark souls 3. Staying true to its original roots, Dark Souls 3 takes the notorious difficulty to a whole new level. The twisted collection of horrifying enemies armed with an arsenal of endless death coupled with bigger and deadlier bosses make the challenge all too real; and the sense of impending doom originating back to the original Dark Souls is alive and well. Aside from the difficulty and the constant adversity, Dark Souls 3 also carries a hint of serenity. The artwork and graphical quality of this insane and dangerous world is at the top of its game. The kingdom of Lothric was truly brought to life through vivid imagery. The glistening sun and shimmering water; all the way down to the very trees, which seem to whisper omens of death as you pass them by. Curiosity and determination drive you forward as you explore castles, caves, catacombs and many other locations, all filled with treasure to collect; and any number of nightmarish creatures waiting to kill you. I would have to give Dark Souls a 9/10 for being an incredible game on its own, but also a perfect send-off for the Dark Souls trilogy.

Dark Souls II for me was boring. While it was fun for a short while, the lack of creativity in design and area layout began to frustrate me. The original Dark Souls was very good and important in many ways, however was exceedingly frustrating due to how awkward the combat was. Hallways and arenas were designed so tightly that the walls would constantly interrupt weapon attacks, the camera constantly gets stuck on unimportant objects, and there are many areas which instead of feeling tough yet manageable, have their odds stacked so far against the player that the difficulty stops being an obstacle to overcome, and instead becomes a wall to slowly chip apart. Often the original game feels lackluster due to how often the player will repeat the same area after dying, with no enemy encounter standing out above the rest. Dark Souls III fixes the issue of having an underwhelming combat system by changing the hallway-based design, and complements this with enemies which will absolutely annihilate any careless player. Battling an enemy is now much more dynamic. Enemies have a larger moveset, however there are almost always many weaknesses to exploit and various ways to take down any challenge in the game. While there were certainly many areas which were weaker than others, I was never let down by the cunning way each enemy was designed and placed to make each area a pain in the neck for the player. The bosses are outstanding as always, and with the improved combat are probably my favorite, above Dark Souls I and Dark Souls II. The Abyss Watchers are my favorite due to their gorgeous music and the unique feeling of teamwork present throughout the first phase of the fight. The Dancer of the Boreal Valley is another phenomenal boss due to the slippery way it moves throughout the fight. The Nameless King, while hopelessly frustrating, was intensely satisfying to finally defeat, and stands as an extremely strong optional boss. The optional areas themselves are often not too far out of the way, yet I was consistently impressed by how naturally the game guides the player through the levels, pointing out optional areas and shortcuts along the way by using enemies as a trail of breadcrumbs, moving the player from one to the next sequentially. This type of design leads to a feeling of pride by the player in discovering an optional area or an important item as they feel as though they've earned it by exploring the paths, which have been naturally laid out by the game designers. The optional areas themselves are all worth playing as well, with Archdragon Peak being one of the highlights of the game for me. There are of course frustrations as there are with any outstanding game. There are a few unpolished moments where enemies will get stuck in walls. Certain battles, especially those with two or more enemies feel a bit unfair in how enemies will double-team the player and overwhelm them with attacks which which will guard-break the player, and trap the player in inescapable damage stuns. For someone like me, who is the absolute worst at Dark Souls, these moments were intensely frustrating, and often would result in myself cheating the enemy AI in order to progress, exposing the cracks in an otherwise extremely well-designed game. I dislike how the invisible walls encourage running around blindly smacking every wall in sight in order to access huge optional areas, I dislike how the camera is still a little finicky and can sometimes be an obstacle itself to overcome. However, like all other things in Dark Souls III, adapting to this is possible, though difficult. The highlights in the game far outshine the issues, and as of right now this is the Dark Souls game I will recommend to anyone after Bloodborne. So I'm going to give Dark Souls III a 9 out of 10. Dark Souls III rarely innovates, but it experiments within the Souls parameters to grotesque and glorious effect. Another Game of The Year contender, then. [June 2016, p.81]

Dark Souls III is all-consuming, it’ll drive you up the wall, and the sense of accomplishment you’ll get when everything clicks and you go on to finish that final boss... well, it’s simply beyond compare [June 2016, p70]

The best Dark Souls game to pick up right now, and a fitting finale for the series. [May 2016, p.58]
