Despite being a masterpiece of split universes and the often futile attempts to fight fate, we're living in the timeline where the original source code for Chrono Cross was lost to the scars of time and the remaster that exists in this age wasn't given the focus that one of the greatest JRPGs of all time deserves.

A legendary Japanese RPG like Chrono Cross deserves much better treatment than this devastatingly bad remaster.

Parts of Chrono Cross really haven't aged well, but it's still a charming, characterful JRPG that evokes feelings of the genre's golden age on PS1. It's a game that deserves better than The Radical Dreamers Edition, which, at least at launch, is a dreadfully poor remaster. Crippled by frame rate issues, it beggars belief that a title from 1999 could run this badly on modern hardware. Unless you're desperate for the nostalgia, we strongly recommend waiting to see whether Square Enix releases a patch to improve the package on PS4 and PS5 before buying.

Chrono Cross is a great example of the golden age of JRPG on the first PlayStation. The biggest problem comes from a remaster that doesn't do all the homework.

Square Enix could’ve definitely done more to celebrate Chrono Cross in this package (making Chrono Trigger available on the Switch would also be a nice touch for completionists). But even in a no-frills package, Chrono Cross remains a great game. And the things that made it stand out initially — that complex narrative, the huge cast, the oddly compelling world — are what keep it interesting more than two decades later.

The frame rate kills it. What a lazy port of a wonderful game.
Don't buy now until they patch it.

The game actually runs worse on my PS5 than the original on PS1, with the framerate dropping to less than 30 almost the entire time. I’m not even asking for 60fps, the game can’t even run properly at 30fps. Not only that, the game freezes ocasionally. Auto save should solve that problem, right? The game auto saves ONLY WHEN YOU ARE IN A SAVE SPOT, MAKING IT USELESS. Square made the remaster even worse than the original and I regret buying this game. Real shame because the game itself is very good. Full Review »

I guess I don't know how I feel about this game. Growing up, I loved it. It looked great on a CRT. Ran great on the ps1. Everything about thisI guess I don't know how I feel about this game. Growing up, I loved it. It looked great on a CRT. Ran great on the ps1. Everything about this game was incredible.

Fast forward to 2022 and the hype for me at least was very real. I downloaded it immediately, started it up and my first thought was "they couldn't have at least cleaned up the FMVs?". My excitement dwindled a little bit but carried on. I start playing it and it's going alright, liking it for the most part...then I noticed it...was there input lag? Why isn't it reading me pushing the x button to attack quicker? What's going on with this awful frame rate drop? My expectations of this game vanished. Do I still love the game? Yes. I'm playing on the ps5 so it's not like it's a 1st gen ps4 (even though it should run just fine on that too). But am I EXTREMELY disappointed that they couldn't at least clean up the FMVs and make sure the frame rate was steady and there was no input lag? Absolutely.

Pros - Nostalgia, soundtrack, great jrpg, story line

Cons - not cleaned up like I figured it would be, input lag like crazy, severe frame rate drops.
