What a terrible game. What a sad return to WW2. I actually enjoy the campaigns of COD games - this is the first that i just find totally unplayable. Bad characters, the worst quick-time-events i've ever seen, arcade-style shooting and the most boring story.

I’ve played a few of the “Call of Duty” games before, but I’d say I have a weird history with this franchise. My friends and I have spent numerous hours playing several “Call of Duty” games (notably the “Black Ops” sub-series) in local multiplayer (mostly through fighting bots and taking on Zombies), and I’ve had some fun playing those games, since I enjoy some local cooperative multiplayer with friends, but “Call of Duty” is in a weird boat where I feel it's simultaneously the most underrated and overrated game franchise out now. Underrated in that the games are relatively fun in short bursts, and perhaps not as bad as the internet might lead you to believe, but overrated in that they aren’t nearly as good as their blockbuster sales might lead you to believe. “Call of Duty” is not one of the greatest franchises in gaming, it’s simply one of the most persistent, as it continues to receive yearly installments that sell like hotcakes in spite of their general averageness. And while 2017’s “Call of Duty: WWII” was a hyped entry when it was announced for returning to the boots-on-ground gameplay style after so many futuristic entries, this entry honestly epitomizes the “averageness” that has rendered the series unexciting.
“Call of Duty: WWII,” presentation-wise, does things pretty solidly: of course, the game is graphically impressive, just as any number of Activision games are, and gameplay-wise, it's at the very least functional. It’s fast-paced, the controls are fluid, and the gunplay is competent stuff. Beyond the campaign, this is another “Call of Duty” game that I’ve played with friends (as I mentioned, mostly against bots because that’s what we like), and it is occasionally pretty fun. This is a very minor thing, but I never got to mention this when I reviewed “Battlefield 1,” which I’m using just for the sake of comparison, but one thing I found so fun in that game was being able to use a shovel as a weapon, just because it was so jarring yet gratifying. “Call of Duty: WWII” does also allow you to use a shovel, which…I’m sorry, I know it’s really minor, but I just get a kick out of it.
The reason I had to mention something that minor, though, is because I'm really reaching to find something positive to say about this game. I had some big issues with it, but the biggest, most glaring one is this: if you've played one “Call of Duty” game, you’ve played them all, and this entry hits that nail on the head. There’s nothing exciting about the gameplay here, it’s competently made but severely lacking in anything that captivating. Beyond the lack of standout gameplay elements (well, outside of vehicle sections that stand out for the WORST reasons), the campaign is unbelievably short and painfully unfulfilling. Much of the story is a mishmash of clichés with forgettable characters, and the game is so cinematic that it feels like most of the game’s length is spent watching. I know I mentioned in my review of “Battlefield 1” that it too had a campaign that felt short and occasionally had too much watching, but “Call of Duty: WWII” takes those flaws and turns them up to eleven. And the difference here is that “Battlefield 1” actually had a good game to go along with it, but with “Call of Duty: WWII,” I mean, I just beat the remaster of “Modern Warfare 2” about a month ago and I feel like I’m playing that exact same game here. By the way, I know I’m hanging around the “Battlefield 1” comparison a lot in this review, and I don’t want this to feel like a compare-and-contrast piece because a game should be judged on its own, but frankly, I feel the comparison is worth bringing up because I refuse to believe that “Call of Duty: WWII” would exist had the fanbase not caused such a stink about “Infinite Warfare” a year prior, and then EA not hit it so big with the announcement and trailer for “Battlefield 1” not long after. This game feels like it was conceptualized and created only to ride on the coattails of “Battlefield 1,” and frankly, to me, it often just feels like a rip-off of it.
I really have to hand it to the “Call of Duty” series, because it is just extremely good at diluting and watering down the entire FPS genre for the biggest audience possible, most specifically casual gamers who don’t play enough video games to understand why the franchise is not nearly on the level of creativity as the many games it finds itself so eager to copy off of And that is precisely the case with “Call of Duty: WWII,” which has its moments of fun, but continues to carry a “been there, done that” vibe. It’s the same game you’ve played for years, and it remains a very safe, stale, lowest common denominator shooter that I can’t help but feel simply indifferent towards.
    Final rating: 5 out of 10 “Hmm…”

Call of Duty: WWII is peak Call of Duty to me (because I have not played the Modern Warfare reboot or CoD:BlOpsIIII). I think back to playing Call of Duty: Ghosts a few years into the current generation and thinking about how awful it looks next to PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4. Now we have a Call of Duty that finally looks, feels, and sounds like a current gen game. Activision stoppedCall of Duty: WWII is peak Call of Duty to me (because I have not played the Modern Warfare reboot or CoD:BlOpsIIII). I think back to playing Call of Duty: Ghosts a few years into the current generation and thinking about how awful it looks next to PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4. Now we have a Call of Duty that finally looks, feels, and sounds like a current gen game. Activision stopped counting money and finally made a great game.

Let's gloss over the multiplayer. It is the classic boots on the ground game that fans have been supposedly clamoring for since Call of Duty added cyborgs and exoskeletons. As an old school gamer, I love it. Jumping into a match was as disorienting as ever for a new player yet I the shooting and killing is the same. I love that I can pick up great weapons off the corpses of higher level players. I think an equal start mode would be better, liked fixed classes in Team Fortress and Overnight. Overall, I love the old school World War 2 action and finding a match was incredibly easy. There is also a zombie mode for co-op lovers. No one says that Call of Duty is not the complete package, unless they are talking about CoD:BlOpsIIII because that game did not have a single player campaign.

The single player campaign in in CoD:WWII is the best I've played in a Call of Duty game since CoD 4: Modern Warfare back in in the 00s. The campaign is so good, it rivals the campaigns in great single player only games. Although the game is focused on the grim reality of World War 2, the developers added a lot of fun elements like sniping levels, a little tank action, and some light air combat. The tank inspired level was all the more amazing with the destructible environment and the great audio. You can hear the crunch as you drive over piles of bricks. Why doesn't Activision make an entire game like this, and I don't mean the pay-to-win World of Tanks? The air combat section was a bit kindergarten (no pun intended) but still looked and sounded great. If the ACE Combat series looked this good, I would buy into it. The stealth missions will hold your hand, as usual, to a certain extent, and letting the game proceed after failing with stealth is new. In many ways, CoD:WWII felt like a mashup of World War 2 game classics minus Castle Wolfenstein. (Wouldn't a Call of Duty version of the Great Escape be bonkers? I suppose it was done in CoD:BlOps but then again, when has Activision every refrained from repeating itself?)

The health system in WWII is a bit iffy. Rather than crouching under cover to regain health, the player character uses health packs. Sometimes a buddy will toss you a health pack and sometimes you find them laying around in the forest. I see this as a side-grade of the usual health system that Call of Duty borrowed from Halo: Combat Evolved. What the game really needs is a true a.i. system that does not have every gun trained with 100% accuracy on the player character.

The NPCs will shout "Daniels" a few times a minute. If you are named Daniels, then you will love this game. Or you might hate it. The developers are pushing toward immersion and they succeed halfway because the barks from the NPCs are too constant and the game still has to throw up on-screen directions. The levels are also designed to be idiot proof. The player area is in most cases quite narrow and serve to funnel players back onto the set path. The game does not reward curiosity, even if there are 33 mementos to collect.

The story is the real star of the campaign. The character detail and voice acting help to sell it. World War 2 aficionados will know the context of the battles, even if the details do not all seem authentic. The human story, however, is told well, and I do not envy the men who endured all those months of fighting from D-Day to crossing the Rhine.

Full disclosure: I bought this game for $5 used from Gamestop. Then PlayStation released the game for free a month later. Activision did get some of my money out of this (and they deserve it), but I think Activision's ultimate goal was to have more players to buy additional content on-line This is silly in for any historical game as the appeal of the game is the historical accuracy. If Activision focuses on making good games, people will buy them.

There was alot of big talk from the devs leading up to the release suggesting a reinvention of the COD game design, sadly this was not the case just more of the same in a new skin - that isnt a flaw as the formula is still successful here, just disappointing that more couldn't be done to push the franchise forwards given the IMO extremely entertaining (but poorly received) infinite warfare. COD WW2 is a great but not ground breaking game (review as based on SP not MP).

1st the quick time events (QTE) are horrible maybe it's me but reading the prompts wasn't obvious initially, and these QTE start getting over used real quick.
2nd If anything makes me scream obscenities at a game it's headshotting an enemy (not a boss a normal grunt) and them getting up as if nothing more inconvenient than a tenis ball had bopped them on the nose and if you shoot a German in his velar weave mithril silver trench coat expect to empty several rounds to inconvenience him, what the hell man!? it isn't 1996 anymore! games moved past this kind of cheap bullet sponging decades ago.
3rd British SOE agents, there is SOO much wrong with this anyone with half a brain or any level of understanding of the SOE is forced to cringe and I'm not talking about the now obligatory female agent (they existed maybe not in the capacity shown but I can live with that) what made me cringe was as soon as SOE were mentioned I thought ok when do they roll out the cockney weasels.. TADA as if by magic.
By the time I derailed an heavily armoured train WITH A JEEP!!! ffs I had had enough, I couldn't suspend my disbelief any further this campaign was badly written poorly implemented garbage.
I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this game I would have felt violated.
I'm yet to try the multiplayer, for all I enjoy MP COD, the campaign is primarily why I used to buy these titles.

Call of Duty WWII has an amazing campaign, but it isn't enough to save it from being one of the weaker entries in the series. The online play is disengaging and tarnished by easily forgettable maps and the zombies mode is incredibly lacklustre in comparison to the main Black Ops series entries.

Better than the last few CODs, but still pretty average. The campaign this time around was too over-the-top and repetitive for me. But the multiplayer did add one mode that I enjoyed; War. Plus the zombies was a bit better this time around. But it just didn't do much for me overall.

In my opinion it does what it sets out to do excellently. Don't expect the depth of an open world RPG- this is an action packed, linear shooter that rewards reflexes and accuracy. The story knits it together nicely and has some moral and historical messages that while a little trite might be of value to those not familiar with WW2 history.

Graphics are realistic, very detailed and smooth on the normal PS4, and the cut scenes could genuinely be stylized live action at times.

The campaign is relatively short but extremely dense, there is not a second of boredom. Reasons to replay include higher difficulties and collectibles. It is nicely varied with sniping, trench warfare, turrets, stealth, planes, tanks, jeeps and more. The short tank sequence in particular is brilliantly tense if you get into the mindset.

There are some horrible weapons too like flamethrowers and double-barrelled shotguns make you pity the Nazi victims at times.

I don't play multiplayer FPS so cannot comment on that. Zombies looks like a fun addition.

It's not a 10 because it isn't incredibly original, and the campaign could be a little longer, with perhaps a bit more flexibility on routes or tactics.

I gather most of the griping on here is about the multiplayer. I'd honestly ignore those complaints and highly recommend picking up the game just for the campaign.

The only times I felt immersed were when it was pure combat. Pop out of cover, shoot, reload, dodge explosion, change cover. That's a fun gameplay loop. They try to stray from that so often, like they're afraid of it. It's so frustrating to get glimpses of what this game could be only for them to be interrupted with "GRAB THAT PANZERSHREK". If you don't do what they want you to, the AI willl scream it out over and over and over.

The audo is also super messed up. Only 1 setting that controls all the audio. It's mixed terribly and you'll rarely even be able to hear dialogue. The bass overpowers everything else, completely drowns it all out.

Some of the missions are so poorly designed. They spend so long on the scenery then lazily dump re-spawning AI all over. Very little care was put into making this game fun to play.

The game ends in an extremely underwhelming way that is very obviously not what was originally intended. It feels very unfinished and this being the game that it is from the developers and publisher that it is from... It will never be finished.
As that is the way of modern game design for AAA companies.
Overall.. whatever. This game won't be remembered for any special reason. Extremely lazy and forgettable.

Overall, another disapointing entry in the saga that is not even worth half of its retail price.

I still have to admit it is impressive how the developers caught up what must have been one of the worlds darkest times.

I played this on a PS4 Pro with SSD and I can say there were no framedrops, bluescreens, bugs or long loading times. The game engine provides an intense and brilliant game feeling even facial animations are top notch in this one. Weapons lack a little bit and some weapon handling could be improved. The campaign progresses throughout 12 missions that will take you busy for around 7hrs. Gameplay is covered by quick time events (which are imho more frustrating then useful) and very well made cutscenes.

The world is fittingly dark but the developers were able to bring in diversity with different characters, emotional bonds and nice locations you have to visit not forgetting what it means to be out on the battlefield.

Afterall if you buy it only for the campaign it might be a bit pricey but once again this campaign proves to be very worthy in my opinion.

This franchise has taken up thousands of my life ever since I discovered World At War all those years ago but ladies and gentlemen I come to you today a broken man. Words cannot describe how much of an insult to our community this is. This is a game that IF you manage to connect will shove microtransactions and supply drops down your throat at every screen and opportunity its absurd. Once you clear away that trash and try to find a game there's a solid chance you'll be disconnected before it even starts. If it starts and you maintain a ping less than 100 then congrats you'll get to enjoy the most inconsistent gameplay I have ever experienced in an online game. The pacing in a humble game of TDM can change so fast. In one moment it'll be balls to the wall and then absolute silence for the rest of the game. The maps are simplistic, uninspired and boring to look at. In each DLC pack you pay for all you will get is a few new maps that are just as **** as the vanilla ones. Zombies has been turned into an overly complicated mess which is just completely against the ethos of zombies. The Colour palate is bland and washed out, the menu navigation is the slowest and most broken it has ever been in the history of the franchise and will straight up block you from accessing parts of the menu for no apparent reason. The campaign uninspiring, the script and its delivery make me want to do a Van Gough. At no point has this game felt worth the price it makes you pay. This game fails on all fronts. Microsoft had the good taste many years back to apologise for Windows Vista many years back and and that was good of them but, Activision, the only thing you can do to make up for this dumpster fire is to give a full refund to all who bought the game and desire one. Zombies I thought would be fun, but I was wrong. It's just so bad I only played one map and didn't even bother with the other maps because it felt boring and stale whiten a few matches and it's even more disappointing when this gamemode is not meant for solo players and made more for co-op. 2/10 a Call of Duty you shouldn't waste your money on because it's boring and you don't get your money's worth out of it. Released in 2017, this game goes back to WWII to provide a Michael Bay take on the allied Invasion of Europe. Story: Pretentious, historically inaccurate and all written with knowledge of what happens after in mind. Actual soldiers weren't this foolishly brave, nor did they have any illusion about 'becoming heroes.' The game sets up moments that are clearly straight up stolen from moviesReleased in 2017, this game goes back to WWII to provide a Michael Bay take on the allied Invasion of Europe. Story: Pretentious, historically inaccurate and all written with knowledge of what happens after in mind. Actual soldiers weren't this foolishly brave, nor did they have any illusion about 'becoming heroes.' The game sets up moments that are clearly straight up stolen from movies like Saving Private Ryan, but then follows it up by dozens of allied soldiers just running into the fire of the enemy... What the **** ??

However, after the liberation of Paris the darker tone of the story starts to set in as the war becomes more vicious in German territory. I was enjoying this part of the story much more.

    Gameplay:
The shooting mechanics are actually very good. The practical WWII weapons provide a much more intimate fighting style, as battles are fought in narrow fields or streets. The reaction of hitting and eliminating an enemy feels very satisfying, and the results are quite gory. There are obligatory quick-time events, though these do show intense fights to the death that get you on the edge of your seat. There is a particular mission where you you operate a Sherman tank that fights a Panzer and a Tiger Tank. Though this is very simplified (and a Sherman tank is no match for a Tiger II Tank) it is quite entertaining! I find the single player campaign of WWII to be very enjoyable due to the satisfying gameplay and darker missions later on. Had this been the only content of WWII for 20 bucks i could have given it a 7/10. Graphics:
It's a pretty game, no doubt about that. The cinematics are especially stunning to look at, and i like the inclusion of gory effects by explosives.

    Multiplayer:
Chickens running around with no head gameplay, that lacks all the satisfaction that is present in the single player campaign. There are some fun modes that change up the gameplay, but Team Deathmatch and the basic modes are poorly put together pools of mud.

    Zombies:
Quite fun, but i feel like it is overstuffed and overcomplicated. A zombies mode like in World at War with a bunch of new small maps would have been enough.

Though the game reeks of inspiration out of movies instead of books, i find the single player campaign to be great. Unfortunately i can't say the same about the rest of the game, as it seems to lack polish and effort. I give the game a 6/10.

Great cut-scenes, with a decent story and great voice acting. The multiplayer is also pretty good, though it is lacking in game modes, and maps, but more than makes up for in customization. There are so many weapons in this game, it almost borders on absurd. Some of the guns are just worthless, and have no place, but with the huge selection too choose from you are left with countless possibilities for crafting your own play style. The only real let down on this game is the zombies. It feels slow, somewhat boring, the enemies present little too no challenge, and the only map you get too play, feels very convoluted and drawn out. It takes way too long to finish a match, and I've only found myself actually playing it a handful of times.

The campaign is more memorable than many of the other Call of Duty games I have played and manages to put you into quite a few interesting combat situations.

Multiplayer is a lot of fun, with the 'War' mode being a highlight. Having longer battles with multiple game types built-in makes for a more interesting multiplayer experience. I just wish there were more maps for 'War' in the base

The singleplayer is, like any cod game, a simple action movie. The multiplayer is standard with a lot of maps that go into 3 lanes, zombies are amazing, yes the map is bigger and there are objectives but its super fun to play if you have friends over. Overall its a standard cod game, if you get it you will have a lot of fin with it.

COD mechanics are still good but there are two major problems in this game:
1 - The campaign is not that fun. It would be nice to have the Eastern front, for example, like in COD World at War.
2 - We play always in the same maps in multiplayer. If we want more maps, it costs a fortune (something like 50 bucks). It's not acceptable.

I was really excited about the story having heard it will return to WW II , but aside from the amazing graphics and good gameplay and a nice story, you could tell they really didn't put much effort into it as it feels a little rushed. Don't really care about zombies to be honest. And the multiplayes is like any othe CoD game, pretty boring for me.

Straight Garbage. Hours of time spent in this game and there is nothing to bring me to keep grinding. The game was doomed from the start with the “Lootboxes” oh sorry I mean Supply Drops! Maps are alright the only good one it seems is Gustav Cannon. All the maps in the game(Non DLC) get boring quick. The addition of Shipment 1944 made it worse with all the Camping and fire shotguns. I’ve never really been a fan of Zombies but this just makes me want to never even start playing zombies. The game is not worth the money. Expand

This is only a review for the single player campaign, because that’s all I played. I thought it had a good story, one that you remember after it’s done, and the gameplay was satisfying. Horrible maps, bad gun balancing, garbage story mode. I got the game for free from ps plus and even then it is worthless. Cod modern warfare is a better game. This game does nothing new except add a destiny style hub with horrible lootboxes with garbage, recycled loot

    The campaign:

Wonderful storytelling and quality. The graphics are top of the line, the visuals in general are great, the sound is excellent, etc. The story is great action and hooks you at the end in a great way. In the final mission I genuinely got attached to the characters and even got a bit sentimental. (9/10) The multiplayer: I played it only a bit. Got to rank 10 and I can

    The multiplayer:

I played it only a bit. Got to rank 10 and I can say it's good but not much more. I prefer other COD's for the multiplayer. But for a WW2 shooter it does a great job. (7/10 but keep in mind I didn't play it a lot)

    The Zombies:

I am gonna get some hate for saying this, but... I actually really liked the zombies. I prefer BO3 over this but still they're pretty competent. I had a great time trying to beat The Third Reich's storyline with some friends. It surely provided me with some great time during the 2 or 3 weeks it took. I would recommend trying to solve its story without looking up a guide, makes it more fun. (9/10)

I liked it a lot, the story was awesome and the graphics were one of the best I´ve ever seen. The characters are well done and the scenery was beautiful. I have never been interested in zombies, and I have never tried the multiplayer so I can't give my opinion on that.

It is certainly better than all the other CoDs in recent years, but it still doesn't hold up with the original CoDs that took place during WW2.

I really wanted CoD’s return to World War II to be something more than a solid game – but it’s not. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve already seen all this, that the developers (or perhaps the publisher) chose to create something as safe as possible. There’s just one campaign mission that surprised me with its scale, the rest is just a disappointing “best of Call of Duty”. The multiplayer is as good as usual, but it was infused with unnecessary systems resembling mobile titles, e.g spending in-game currency on pointless tasks of the “kill 100 enemies” variety. Missions that make you watch other players open their loot boxes are the pinnacle of absurdity. [13/2017, p.64]

A solid return to its roots, Call of Duty WWII reminds us what made us all fall in love Call of Duty in the first place. It ticks all the boxes which is both a blessing and a curse. Good fun and worth your time but offers nothing exceptional.
