Another complaint I have is that it's not really fun (or worth it) to explore the world, you'll explore the world by following objectives you have from your side quests, there's no reason to "explore on your own" and do your own thing, which I think an openworlder should have. The narrator is also a pain in the ass.
The game has really good graphics though, I'll give it that.

I had a good time playing it but I was expecting so much more.

In the game's prolouge, they throw so much lore and story your way, through a really drull narration trying really hard to be Stephen Fry from BigLittlePlanet, that you're not really given much time to take the world you'll be exploring or even what kind of character you're playing as. Even the combat can feel really stiff and out of control, you'll be attacking a lot of air when things get busy. Is it a bad game? No, there is something here that can be salvageable, but the end result just couldn't keep a hold of my interest Expand

okay, i'm not going to recommend this game. in order to better explain how i feel about this game i'm going to compare it to ordering a pizza (stick with it)

so you order a pepperoni pizza normally right, you've got you toppings and it all tastes good together (when doesn't pizza taste good) a Biomutant pizza would be a pizza in a box, but instead of everything being combined

a Biomutant pizza would be a pizza in a box, but instead of everything being combined together to form a wonderful delicious circle of happiness. what it actually is, is a box containing-

    a base
    some pepperoni
    some sauce
    some cheese.

that's what Biomutant is like, it *should* be really great but it's just not combined in a way that makes it enjoyable. (well to me anyway)

I think the main campaign was not that good. I also had some technical issues on my PS5 with several bugs, one game breaking. The open world is very pretty but its filled with stuff to just check the box. Outposts get really repetitive with very little veriety . One of the cool parts of the game is the character customization and the 6 factions. There are good factions and evil factions. This allows you to play the game as an evil or good character.

Biomutant has very repetitive missions and poor puzzles; they all feel really similar and give a small variety. This game's repetitiveness reminds me of Ubisoft open world games which end up having a strong first 1-2 hours and then it falls off then picks up within the last 2 hours of the game.

Overall Biomutant doesn't bring anything new to the table for open world action RPGs and copies a lot of other games and does everything worse than them . So Biomutant ends up being a 6-10 for me which I wish I could give a better score because I have been waiting for this game for years and it's very disappointing.

I rarely review games, as it just adds more 'noise' to what's out there, but I have to review this one. I was looking forward to it, but I feel I've wasted £50+ on this and I have no compulsion to go back to it even though I have only played 10 hours. I realise that 10 hours isn't enough to justify a full-on review, so my angle will be this:

I can't find the motivation to go back to the game as it's suck all of that out of me.

    1. The narrator and the constant interruptions that stop you actually playing the game are the worst I've experienced. The game is action focused in the way the character is controlled and set-up, but the action is stopped every minute or so because of the narrator or some other thing freezing your progress. It makes it ponderous and boring.

    2. The quests and puzzles are boring, repetitive, childish and lazy in design.

    3. The loot is mostly useless and there's rarely anything to get excited about.

    4. The combat is a weird hybrid that doesn't nothing well. You don't fully lock on but you do hit them bad guys if you are generally pointing in their direction. It's just not satisfying.

    5. From the screen shots and trailers, I expected the graphics and animations to be much better - they are very poor compared to what we've seen pre-release.

    6. Game play aside, this game might have been put together by 20 people in a kind of Indy way, but they should have measured that against the price of the game i.e. not an AAA game but charging an AAA price. The game is a £29.95 game at most and I feel like I have wasted all of my money because I was not entertained at all and I just want to uninstall is and get my valuable hard drive space back.

Unless you have some die-hard affinity towards the designers and what they are trying to do, then save your money.

Yes it's a game with only 20 developers, but since it's full priced - i've taken that out of the equation. The game is £25 $30-35 at most. The price they're selling it - is outrageous.

I'm writing this, so you don't have to play it. You don't have to slog your way through the worst game of the year so far. Got to level 50, would have got the platinum but one of the trophies is bugged,

I'm writing this, so you don't have to play it. You don't have to slog your way through the worst game of the year so far. Got to level 50, would have got the platinum but one of the trophies is bugged, and the less said about the glittermoths the better. Really. Once they're done, I'll uninstall and never have to think about this game again. Like mass effect andromeda. It'll just be a bad memory.

Karma - It's useless. The funny thing is you'll come across shrines in graveyards. some are dark. some are light. You have no idea what one it is until you activate it. But if you're worried and wanna be light just pick up every animal you see "pet and keep" and your light will be in the majority easily. Yes the system is useless. And feels worthless.

Quests - You know those RPGs where you have a favourite quest, one that just resonated with you - whether it's Mass Effect, Skyrim, Final Fantasy, Tales of, etc. This game has none of those. No quest that makes it feel worthwhile. No quest with a storyline that you enjoy.

Combat - it can be fun, but that wares off by level 25. So in the end you make sure you have a fire sword for armoured and shield enemies. And your rifle takes care of anything else. There's a variety of weapons don't get me wrong, especially the tribe ones but they're not all that good. The only one that made me smile was a burning rolling pin.

Mounts - The only useful one is the googlide, but even then if you see a body of water and think wow the googlide would be perfec... it doesn't summon everywhere. Only in certain areas like the rest of the transports. They're mostly used for bosses or the blimp to reach an area you can't get to otherwise. (in this game if you can't pick up, use or get to an area there's usually a convoluted quest on the other side of the world in 6 parts that helps you)

Levelling up/Gear - There's loads of loot, but most of it will be useless. In fact 90% ends up being useless. But there's plenty of it. So there's that.

Puzzles - even with a decent intelligence some of them can't be solved in the moves given. it's randomly set up each time. So you'll get it, they're not difficult, some are just impossible given the amount of moves they give you. The only interesting ones are the X, Y and Z but they're in short supply.

Graphics - the game is pretty and it's a fairly large world. Dark in areas especially nuclear fallout underground.

Also if you're going to play it, as I did on the PS5. Keep a manual save updated regularly. The game only crashed twice but each time it corrupted the two autosaves that the game keeps.

It's a 6, it would have been a 7 but the terrible fast travel system, the poorly written quests. The terrible male orientated characters (you'll come across maybe 3 female characters out of 16 and none of the tribe leaders are female). You can change the frequency of the narrator. Do that. Straight away.

Just be prepared for repetition which would make any MMORPG blush.

The world is beautiful but it seems that most of the budget was put into the engine and lead to assets being overly re-used, variety massively lacking, combat being clunky and quests left boring and uninspired.

The game itself looks amazing and I have to credit the devs for a lot of creative potential which is absolutely shining in this game but this is where the positive vibes already end. The game runs terrible on Playstation consoles. It is a 1080p60fps on PS5 and still has great trouble with stutters, texture pop-ins and occasional hang-ups. Whenever you travel too fast, kill an enemy or there is just too much happening the game freezes for a mere second or has very bad hiccups. Basically this disqualifies a game for me as being good and recommendable.

Beyond that the introductionary part in this game is horrible. Players get flooded by command prompts within minutes and after that cutscenes happen every few minutes rendering game immersion and "getting used to it" to insignificance. Looking deeper the game falls apart even more because the target aim is all over the place resulting in misses or getting hit. The game is so buggy, that sometimes you do specials but you cant hit because the game engine misses the collision progress. The combat itself tries to be deep by having categories and classes but honestly... it is most of the time just button mashing.

The UI and UX is also not the best. It seems that is has been tuned to seem modern but lacks practical placement. The menu is not intuitive by any means and you will find yourself pressing the wrong buttons over and over.

Gamewise I do like my random fetch quests and this is fine after all but the quests are really that bad and the loot is insignificant. I found a handful of weapons on my playthrough the rest must be crafted. Most of the loot is trash and not worth grabbing at all. I think this is especially again for casual players not the best design.

Now the game comes down to boss fights and where it matters you often dont control your character as usual but you are bound to use a device, mount or something like that. Ontop they tried to layer boss mechanics to make it appealing but failed completely in doing so leading to boss fights that are terrible finnicky and can be frustrating especially for casual players on console controllers.

Closing with one more very existential point. The story feels very bad, the constant narration gets overloading and the gibberish as well as the words used to describe the "fantasy world" makes it even worse and uninteresting. Half way through the game I just skipped through the dialogues.

I think there was a lot passion in developing the game but it feels bad to invest full price into a game that is just not worth it at all. I had some fun moments, but mostly I just wanted to get over with it. I do not recommend this game at the moment and even with performance and bug fixes which are needed bothways, the game still lacks. If you are still interested in this game I HIGHLY recommend to wait for at least 50% of sale and lower initial expectations.

If you go into this comparing it to AAA games, you will be disappointed. But if you can forgive the small issues then you will find a fun, quirky game with unique characters and combat.

There are a couple of things that i would like changed which i believe would improve the player experience.
Firstly, the camera is quite close to the player. Whilst this is nice when exploring, it makes combat difficult as it makes seeing all enemies harder. By zooming out in combat, or allowing the user to change camera zoom this would improve the combat experience.
Also, the game is very stop/start for the first hour or so, and takes away the immersion of the world. Whilst this is seen as the tutorial part and is probably more directed at the younger audience, as an experienced gamer i found the hand-holding frustrating. I would like the ability to not have so much interjection from tutorials.
Also, dialogue can be a bit slow as the narrator only translates conversations after they've happened. it would be nice to have him translate at the same time, just to speed up conversations.

After finishing it last night, I went through my complete quest log and scribbled down the list of fetch and collection quests. It's not an exaggeration to say it's the bulk of the game. Easily 85% of it. I could live with that if such quests meaningfully expanded the world, but they don't. The vast majority of them just lead you to a tiresome rotation puzzle that gives you a piece of random loot you've probably seen a dozen times before. They had an opportunity to use the old world items like televisions, radios, computers, and movie projectors to help tell the story of this broken, apocalyptic world and, inexplicably, did nothing with them.

The combat was lackluster and felt detached throughout. Playing as a melee Sentinel class, I was disappointed to realize that guns always beat melee weapons no matter how much you invested in strength or how much you'd mod your melee weapons. Other than the few-and-far between armored enemies, every enemy could be easily dispatched with a rifle or auto rifle and kiting them around the combat area. Crafting was a bright spot early on but then I started finding "Ultimate Meleeweapons" and "Ultimate Rangedweapons" which outclassed anything I could craft by a LARGE margin. If they started losing power, all I had to do was swap a higher level addon and it was overpowered again. Playing on Hard difficulty, almost all enemies were pushovers with exception to the Worldeaters, who were only difficult by virtue of the fact that the player has to use a scripted method of defeating them rather than our normal combat skills. Bio and Psi skills do little to no meaningful damage, and only Shroom and Freeze are worth taking for minor mob crowd control. All weapons use the exact same combo button presses. Learn one, you've learned them all.

Most damning, I felt nothing for the world or my character because the game did little to make me care. It just throws you in with an hour of exposition dump and sends you on your way. It then showers you with endless collection side quests. The tribe war was boring as nearly every outpost and fortress played out the same way every time, without fail. Plus they did nothing to really distinguish the tribes beyond a blurb about whether they were light or dark aligned.

All in all, this feels like a game that would have been an 8 about a decade ago. With the evolution of open world games over the last generation, this now feels dated and utterly devoid of meaning. Strip out all the collection and fetch quest padding, and you have a game that is, AT MOST, 10 hours -- and that's assuming you don't skip the tribe war after conquering the second tribe (yes, the game will let you fast-foward *a main story arc* after only completing two of five conquests).

It's a $20 game at most. It is the worst kind of open world checkbox padding, the kind of game that would have been at home at the tail end of the Xbox 360/PS3 generation, not at the start of the XSX/PS5 one.

    -----------

And now, the collect-a-thon list for those curious:

Old World items that reward you with crafting mats or armor (5 of each type unless noted, all are rotation puzzles): Washing machines, telephone booths, house telephones, globes, record players (3), radios, guitars, pianos, computers, televisions, movie projectors, safes, arcade cabinets, toilets, microwaves.

Old World items that reward you with slight stat boosts to strength, vitality, or agility (3 of each type, all are QTEs): Treadmills, Dumbbells, Bench Press machines.

15 Old World Noticeboards that reward you with cosmetic automation skins.

Others: 4 sundials, 13 captives, 11 bandit outposts, 14 Old World storage shelters, 6 lumen shrines, 4 aura altars, and more I’m sure I’m forgetting.

The best thing I can say about biomutant is that they tried.. does this look like a ps3 game?? Yes. Did it crash on me like 10 times including during and after an entire boss battle? Yes.. is it way too easy to accidentally sell your currently worn items to merchants so you kind of just ignore that aspect of the game? Yes. but they tried really hard to give you a content packed rpg, from weapon parts, to armour parts to find across this world.. tons and tons.. and tons and tons.. and tons and tons.. and tons and tons of dialog… however.. none of it comes together in an enjoyable way.
Biomutant is a great idea, choose a tribe, interact with the other tribes and either switch sides or try to bring them all together… theres even a balance of lightness and darkness depending on your actions.. but this affects nothing but the ending of the game and the abilitites youre able to unlock for combat..
Combat here is alright. .you have ranged weapons as well as the possibility to make really great close ranged melee weapons.. you can really go out into this world and craft some really great stuff as you set out to take down the 4 adorable world eaters… which are this games main bosses…
But the problem with biomutant is everything in between the good parts and theres way too much of it…
its like eating a sandwhich with a meter thick dry bread.. I would wager that nearly half of my 9 and a half hours was spent sitting through this games excruciating dialog… Biomutant never wants to shut up and just let you play its game.. anytime you get anywhere heres 10 minutes of hearing blabber while your brittish grasshopper translates for you… and its all always the same thing blah blah tree of life blah blah lightness darkness blah blah revenge forgive its all so unnecessary, boring, ad just pads out the game in such a bad way.. there is never any interesting dialog here.. theres no interesting story moments or cutscenes.. it all feels like a giant waste of my time.. I just want to get back into the world and take down the world eaters… along the way youll be doing other tasks to get to the world eaters.. these tasks are all basically the same, go to this building, do some switch flipping puzzles, and catch these creatures then go take down the world eater.. all while youll run into other mamals.. taking them on with your mutant abilities that you get to choose and of course your weapons you’ve been building up.. and while actually putting in the effort to craft the best items is enjoyable.. and collecting the items and materials for the best build possible.. the actual combat here is just not satisfying.. enemies are way too spongy.. so after sitting through mountains of dialog that thankfully are skippable.. you barley get to have any fun out in its world…
Biomutant was decently enjoyable.. but overall I was pretty let down by this boring slog of a world.
At least it has a great message.. stop polluting.
    I give Biomutant a 6.5/10

Biomutant is easily one of the most intriguing games of 2021 and it's unique premise is pleasantly refreshing. The story of my experiences with the game, both before and after release, is perhaps just as interesting as Experiment 101's debut IP.

Biomutant first came to my attention in June 2020 when it's developer, Experiment 101, released a 9 minute trailer showcasing their upcoming project. My initial impressions after watching this trailer were interesting to say the least. From what I saw I felt that Biomutant looked fun and was different in a good way, but at the same time I got the feeling that it wouldn't be regarded as a great game, nor would it receive any game of the year nominations, it's greatest strength - the weird, post-apocalyptic children's cartoon-esque design of it's world and characters - also proving to be it's greatest weakness, as the overall vibe was so intensely alternative.

Then, almost a year later, Experiment 101 released a gameplay demo of what the finished game would look like, and for me, Biomutant couldn't come out soon enough. Then when the game was finally released, my eager anticipation was soured by the reviews I read. Now that I've spent 58 hours with Biomutant, it's now my turn to provide my opinion of the game.

Biomutant is an open world, action RPG equally like and unlike anything before it. It begins with a fantastically rendered cinematic that establishes a tone that the essence of the actual game never quite seems to capture. Afterwards you create your own unique 'biomutant' (or if you're like me and can't be bothered then go with the default character because that looks cool enough) and start your journey.

At a glance, Biomutant looks like a gene spliced amalgamation of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Control, Mass Effect, Fallout, Devil May Cry, Titanfall, Batman: Arkham and Banjo Kazooie. While this is an impressive roster of inspired elements, the unfortunate truth is that Biomutant is a lesser imitation of it's inspirations - think Breath of the Wild at the quality level of Days Gone.

Despite the dramatic setup of it's trailers and aforementioned intro cinematic, Biomutant's 'main story' is less a story and more a series of main quests that help you reach the end of the game. The cutscenes are rigid and disjointed, poorly conveying any sense of narrative. The cast of characters lack personality, spouting pun laden dialogue that wouldn't feel out of place at a positivity seminar.

Quest design, both main and side, reminded me a lot of Assassin's Creed Odyssey (in a bad way) due to the simple singular 'fetch' or 'do' objectives which rob the game of any distinct, memorable quest moments. Another similarity to Odyssey was the sense of content bloat with some (if not many) side quests being linked to location objectives. In one instance I even noted that one side quest - 'The Lotus Captain' - was repeated four times among four different quest givers and were all tied to one single objective.

Beyond it's over-simplified objectives, the real problem with Biomutant's quest design is that the payoff at the end of every quest never matches the setup. Oftentimes, most (if not all) quests conclude in a dissatisfying, anti-climactic way - which made me feel like I'd wasted my time. Another issue is that when you receive a new side quest, 90 percent of the time your new objective can be anywhere between 1000 metres to 3500 metres away from where you are. This is often immensely frustrating because you have to travel vast distances just to do simple, underwhelming objectives.

Combat is the main drawcard in Biomutant (besides exploration) and despite being somewhat janky, is still relatively enjoyable. Enough weapon types, combos, psi-powers, mutations and the much touted 'Super Wung-Fu' keep encounters fun. The flip side is that the enemy AI is dumb, melee feedback and sound registration is virtually non-existent, and melee inputs are slightly delayed. Around the 15 hour mark I obtained a powerful shock rifle which allowed me to stun-lock enemies indefinitely, making every combat encounter laughably easy.

While exploring Biomutant's world may seem akin to Breath of the Wild, it's nowhere near as alive. Enemies defeated in the world never respawn and NPCs perform rigid animations or pace back and forth aimlessly, never interacting with the world. I observed some NPCs trying to chop wood, but instead they simply knocked the log off the chopping block, only to place it back in position and repeat the process over and over. Colour alignment puzzles are repeated ad nauseum, depriving any sense of variation or inventiveness.

For all it's faults, Biomutant NEEDS and DESERVES a sequel to re-code it's genetic make-up. When it comes to quantity, Biomutant is great, but this deeply affects it's quality, making it a generic mutant.

Its graphical fidelity on the PS4 seems a generation behind; its "cutscenes" are extremely rough around the edges, its story is incredibly by-the-numbers, and its pretentious British narrator becomes grating after only a few hours. But despite all this, BioMutant is fun as hell. And while it may not be everyone's cup of tea, those that enjoy it will enjoy it greatly.

Where BioMutant really shines is in its mechanics. The crafting system is relatively deep, and its loot mechanics are also solid. Though the dedication to the post-apocalyptic aesthetic makes some weapon designs sometimes seem unwieldy and less than appealing, the fact that the game will allow you to upgrade weapons you do like the look/bonuses of means that you can essentially make some weapons you like using worthy of endgame play. Exploration, too, is enjoyable - while there is an admitted lack of originality or diversity in terms of what activities there are to do at each point of interest, the vastness of the map means that if you enjoy this sort of open-world approach, you will not be disappointed. In terms of comparisons, BioMutant seems to bear similarities to Assassin's Creed: Odyssey in terms of its exploration (though I would say it is a slight improvement over Odyssey in terms of quality), and depending on what you look for in a video game, that may either be appealing or off-putting.

A more debatable, middling and subjective aspect of BioMutant's features is its combat - much like its treatment of exploration, its combat seems like it could be appreciated by some, loved by others, and hated by others still. Its hack-and-slash style of play seems to resemble a sloppier Kingdoms of Amalur with guns, and possesses a similar lack of challenge. However, unlike Amalur, the feedback provided within combat feels lacking from both an auditory and physical perspective - there is no real "weight" behind the impact of your blows. Those looking for a Dark Souls-esque experience will be frustrated beyond belief at not just the lack of impact behind their attacks, but also the general ease of combat. This game does not treat combat as anything complex, and its simplicity will likely alienate many while also drawing some others in.

Sadly, BioMutant's successes cannot prevent its players from noticing just how much this game looks like it was released as an alpha build. It is hard to know where to even begin in terms of describing these issues, because there are so many. The astonishingly unpolished cutscenes, the graphical glitches, the jumpy transitions, and the visual presentation in general are shockingly below expectations. For all the aesthetic beauty of the game's open world, there is something remarkable about how sloppy some parts of this game look. Combining this with the occasional grammatical/spelling mishaps, occasional gameplay glitches (such as not being to activate the glider before re-loading the game) and "janky," erratic combat issues (such as bullets from guns missing their target for what seems like no apparent reason), and you start to get the idea that this game could have used a lot more time in the oven.

As far as a story goes, BioMutant seems to treat any narrative beats as secondary to gameplay. For those who don't pay much attention to the story (i.e. skipping cutscenes and narration), this will be a moot point - however, anyone looking for a rich, deep story can give this game a pass. Few characters really stand out in any way, and nothing about their "dialogue" (read: The narrator putting words in their mouths) is worthwhile or interesting. You go out into the world, you be the hero (or the villain), and get one of two endings based on whether you are good or bad. Again, this is another element of the game that will seem archaic and uninteresting to some, but appealing in its simplicity to others. Whether you can take it or leave it, it would be silly to give this game credit for its storytelling.

Like some other non-AAA studio efforts, such as Greedfall and Outward, BioMutant is ripe for classification as a potential cult classic. Its egregious lack of polish is obvious, but for those who can see past this, there is a wonderfully entertaining open-world game that will grab your attention for hours and hours. Rather than mass appeal, this game will likely attract fans of action RPGs who are willing to stomach a metric ton of jankiness for the sake of tried, tested and true action RPG and open-world mechanics. I have personally enjoyed the game greatly thus far, but its appeal is narrow - consider what elements of video games you enjoy before buying this one, and be aware that if BioMutant does seem appealing to you, it likely will be. For those who will enjoy it, its price is reasonable - for those who prefer polish, interesting narratives and more nuanced, weighty combat, I recommend ignoring this one.

The game does a few things well but other times mediocre. Combat is fun and dynamic but messy. The crafting is one of the best I've encountered recently. Exploration is far more engaging than most modern open worlds. The world is beautiful and cartoony. The story is sometimes odd and charming then other times boring and repetitive. .

I really dislike that they cloned the giant rat hero from Guardians of the Galaxy without a license, and used it as a basis for your hero build. And that they copied pretty much everything else from other sources too. Like you see stuff and go, hey, dint I see that in NMS?

For instance it’s a very charming and unique game, where you can really feel that the developers put a lot of effort and heart into it. On the other side the story and especially the structure of missions are really unoriginal and get repetitive really quickly.
Heck, most of the side quests are just like this: go to a certain place, activate something by always solving the same puzzle and then get an item, you will never use.

Combat feels on the one hand really smooth and fast paced. But it can get really annoying sometimes due to the lack of basic features, like manually locking onto enemies. And believe me, it will happen a lot of times that the game locks onto enemies you don’t want to attack.

Character development is basically really cool. Create your own mutated creature, choose which environmental dangers it is resistant to, decide whether you are good or bad and decide if you want to unify all tribes or become the sole leader.
But all of these mechanics are really shallow and always feel like they get deeper at some point, but it never happens.

But in the end, it is still kind of fun to play. It has a big, beautiful and detailed open-world and lots of content. It’s really more or less a mediocre game. But if you like it more or less than that really depends on you individually. Especially if you like exploring open-worlds, you will definitely like it more.

Biomutant is all about CRAFTING AND LOOT. The good: Crafting and looting. Zen style combat. Character customization galore. Custom mounts.

Biomutant è un gioco... Strano.

For on open-world action RPG developed by a handful of people, Biomutant makes a very striking impression. It’s hard for me to imagine someone not falling in love with the beautiful, unique world conjured up by Experiment 101. Sure, the game as a whole is not perfect, but if a sequel is ever created, I’ll be the first in line to play it. [07/2021, p.38]

From creating your own character to a wide array of vehicles and a unique world, there’s a lot to love in Biomutant – which makes its shallowness all the more disappointing. The inconsistent battle system and the amount of bugs doesn’t make things any better. While the game certainly knows how to hook you, the fun doesn’t last very long.

Biomutant tries to do a lot of interesting things. It offers a potentially captivating world and unique crafting mechanics. Even the combat's fine, on the surface. The game, however, doesn't exactly play well, with clumsy controls, repetitive missions and an overemphasis on drawn-out dialogue that bores instead of inspires. This really could (and should) have been a lot better than it is.
