The weakest game of all quanticdreams's major projects (Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls and Detroit). In this part we have all elements of the game rather bad:

Beyond Two Souls is Quantic Dream’s attempt to follow up Heavy Rain, their most widely critically acclaimed game to date. Instead of a mystery detective game, this time they have opted for a sic-fi thriller that in concept could be a modern masterpiece of storytelling but ultimately falls flat on its face due to plot holes, awkward situations, a lack of player impact, and an unnecessary complex timeline.

The game tries to be a Nolan movie by telling the events out of chronological order which if done correctly would be fantastic. However what this ends up doing is interupting the fun part of the game in which you play as adult Jodie with a bunch of boring young Jodie levels as she learns of the mysterious world around her. This format works in movies, but it fails in video games. It is one thing for a story based game to deliver “boring gameplay” but still be engaging with the writing. This game (when playing as adult Jodie) actually has pretty fun gameplay. The combat is confusing at first glance, but one can get the hang of it pretty quickly and it feels like you are playing the game more than just mashing the button on the screen. Stealth is super satisfying but is heavily underutilized. The stealth sections in this game are by far the most fun and interesting missions, but there simply aren’t enough of them.

Now I played the game in English, not QA’s native French, but the writing felt awkward many times and the dialogue also felt a bit unnatural. The writing could be better in French, but the English writing leaves much to be desired.

The plot itself is full of holes, which is not good for a plot based game, and it only gets worse on a subsequent play through. The foreshadowing is obvious and various missions feel like they belong in another game. Furthermore your choices in the game have very little impact on the ending of the game. You have far more influence than a Telltale game or Life is Strange, but far less than Heavy Rain and the true differences in endings are disappointing.

Overall, BTS is too ambitious of a project and needed more polish before its release. The game suffers from choppy writing full of holes and boring young Jodie sequences whilst it accels based on its superb voice acting and entertaining adult Jodie sequences.

Nevertheless, there are several good things about this game. First and foremost is the voice acting. Ellen Page and Willem Defoe do a fantastic job in this film. They make you care about the characters reagardless of how questionable the writing can be at certain points in time. The various missions when you play as adult Jodie actually have a

Atrocious, ambiguous & repetitive quicktime controls aside, the story was pretty engaging; Page & Dafoe's performances were very good. It definitely might be worth multiple playthroughs. Maybe the score will go up if I try a few more times.

Zajímavá zkušenost, ale hra sama o sobě není dobrá. Příběh nic moc ,hratelnost klasická pro hry od Quantic Dream. Upřímně radši si pustím dobrý film než se trápit 5 hodin s quick time eventy. Hlavně málo psychopatický William Dafoe.

    pros
    1. Jodie (Ellen Page) is a very good main character maybe even slightly better then each of the Heavy Rain Characters.
    2. Good Music
    3. Parts Where you can possess people with Aiden very cool.
    4. Game has immense mission variety. Get this you go from destroying some punk kids at a party, to being homeless and helping a women give birth, to stealing secrets from other nations, to riding a motorcycle and destroying the police in a town, to destroying people trying to sexually assault her in a bar, to riding a submarine to a underwater base.

    cons
    1. horrendous writing (especially in the party mission i mentioned before Jodie shows the kids her powers and 2 seconds later they want to open gifts. And then they start bullying her and shove her in a closet... I'm like didn't you just see how she has powers (facepalm) also in that same mission Jodie who looks like she's 11 makes out with a 19 year old who literally has facial hair, like mad creepy.
    2. the story is told out of order. Which to be fair if you pay attention you should know what's going on but its just pointless for it to be told out of order. If the missions of her as a child are to boring to be played in order just limit or rewrite them.
    3. Military missions except for the embassy are just terrible and out of place.
    4. Some missions are 5 minutes long others are upwards of a hour.
    5. Romance in this is laughably bad and cringe. to be fair maybe she's so quick to kiss guys because she a hermit but still awkward and cringe
    6. Game is very limited with allowing you to do cool stuff with Aiden
    7. My ending was garbage. Basically she gets rid of Aiden and Starts to miss him and is sad but when she was on the beach with her husband or boyfriend Aiden writes in the sand "Still Here' and i facepalmed.
    8. Game logic is constantly contradicted for ex. Aiden can't go to far away from Jodie because it "hurts' but when the game needs it he literally hovers above the sky to show Jodie her objective. ITs like c'mon bro.

    Conclusion
Beyond is not a very good game and is significantly worse then Heavy Rain. Its story is mediocre at best and terrible at worst because of its horrible writing and bizarrely being told out of order. The only good thing about the narrative is Jodie. Sure individual missions may be well presented like the homeless section but sadly that whole section is rather irrelevant to the game. And is kind of just filler. Funny i enjoyed the filler more then sections actually relevant to the story.

I played it on ps now for free. So if you have ps now and you wanna play it you have nothing to loose. But you certainty will not miss out on much if you miss this one.

As with those previous titles Beyond: Two Souls is described as an interactive drama video game, the story this time revolving around a young woman known as Jodie who has had a psychic connection with a mysterious entity called Aiden.

I’ll admit now that I never made it past the couple of hours of Beyond. The story itself seems to have the potential to be at least fairly interesting, especially with the excellent motion capture performance from Ellen Page, but the gameplay itself is just so dull that I couldn’t face playing for the 8-9 hours it apparently takes to finish. Describing this game as “interactive” is really stretching the definition of the word as the game funnels you down the path it wants you to follow with no input from the player other than to click a few buttons when prompted. Even more galling is the fact that, other than a few inconsequential choices here and there, you can no real impact on the way story plays out and any attempts to be stray are blocked by artificial boundaries.

To sum it up Beyond: Two Souls is a potentially interesting two hour movie stretched out into an an almost ten hour video game.

That's 20+ years worth of experience underneath my massive library, along with 1,000+ games of good and bad in-between. And my judgement is that Beyond Two Souls isn't qualified to be considered a good video game! The Controls aren't responsive, sometimes outright refusing to work, especially when you take cover. Your character is forced to walk everywhere, even in times when you're in danger, which makes absolutely no sense. Battles consists of nothing but "Quick Time Events" and running simulators. Some animations improperly loop themselves without trimming. Every decision you make during the story barely matters due to the linear pathway it leads the player down for almost the entire game. When I completed levels, I didn't feel a sense of accomplishment, I felt like I was brain-dead, because I kept putting up with this **** hoping there will be something more. And every time those hopes & dreams attempted to come to fruition, reality would snap it right back. Beyond Two Souls might as well have been a TV show because it has no gameplay. And to make matters worse: the game will randomly crash. (It crashed on me twice)

I bought this game on the Playstation Store looking for a good story. Beyond Two Souls is a story driven game, and hearing that you're able to choose your own decisions during the game, I was on-board. But oh man! It gives you decisions... but with no weight behind them. The story for Beyond Two Souls is like taking sugar out of people's coffee, selling it to them, and hoping that no one will even notice. Some enjoy the bitter taste, but to others such as myself, it was downright nasty. When you intentionally make a story driven game, you need that depth to keep it fresh, it has to have that flavor to keep others addicted; and that is something Beyond Two Souls desperately needed.

The good things I can say about this game is that the voice acting is superb. The graphics also get a half-mark. And a lot of time was put into creating the environment, so it does get points for that. Everything else: absolute fail!! Even 2 player is an eye-sore!! Beyond Two Souls earns itself a "graphics aren't everything" label. I've played broken games that are more fun and detailed than this.

    Overall Verdict
After comparing this with some of the other bad games I've played, Beyond Two Souls earns itself additional points for effort. Unfortunately, it still doesn't reach a passing mark.

Beyond: Two Souls is a strange cinematic video game story. Strange in the sense that it shows signs of brilliance, but immediately loses it with questionable story telling, design, structure and straight up buffoonery from the director / writer himself.

The gameplay is simple and the story most straightforward quanticdream has been since Fahrenheit. Failure results into nothing and the story has less branching paths, with the ending choice being the only significant one.

I think that my biggest issue with B:TS is the fact that it was told from a non-chronological way without adding anything to the story experience, but actually making it worse. There is one chapter in particular where the player choice and character development is completely thrown out of the window just to give us a chapter where the game forces us one of the most awkward / unnatural / forced romances in videogame history.

The way how this game tackles some of it's subject matter is laughable. Giving us the most surface level, stereotypical examples of them. E.g. puberty chapter, to an extent the child chapters. Don't even get me started on suicide and the unholy r-word.

It seems that every man that is not important to the plot of this game is a rapist (Jodie gets assaulted / raped three times, one of those attempts being a complete cheap shock moment devoid of any build up or logical explanation). The one half-hearted attempt in the homeless chapter was just... ughh.. ( You should've made us do the BJ, Cage!) And one of the most offensive message / concepts about suicide is thrown into the mix towards the end of the game. "GO AND KILL YOURSELF IF YOU'RE FEELING SAD OR IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR FAMILY" is what the game basically tells you.

I could go on to say how devoid of logic and good writing the other chapters are in this game, but that will mean that I have to spoil the story for you.

Bad writing, half-hearted attempts to grab the players attention and emotions, weak characters, awkward and forced scenario's. Even when we are given a choice, Cage doesn't give a damn. "Please, love ze Ryan. S'il te plait, forgive him after he ruined you. Oh, you've denied him zree times? Hmph, zat is the failure of ze game design. Love him! Please!"

The only good things I can say about B:TS is that the production values are through the roof and that William Dafoe and Ellen Page put out some great performances. But even the greatest of actors cannot save a badly written story, just look at the movie industry.

To conclude, B:TS suffers from bad writing and directing and feeling half baked. There are some phenomenal moments to be found here, e.g. "Homeless" (except for that one moment). But as it stands, the cons simply outweigh the pros.

A huge step down from the flawed, yet fine Heavy Rain.

( The PS4 version offers you the option to play the game in chronological order. It does improve the experience. But the non-chronological design choice of the original wasn't even the biggest problem the story had)

My (not so) short review of Beyond: Two Souls

    Story- 3/10
The story is all over the place. It's like a horrible version of Steins;Gate (Steins;Gate is amazing and I'm not saying that it's bad if someone misunderstood me). You have so many flashbacks that it's really hard to understand what is going on. It jumps back and forward a lot and without any order. It feels like even game developers didn't really understand what was going on. It only starts making sense when you are close to finishing the game. Even if it starts making sense later on it's still a really bad story. It's filled with pointless arcs like the desert one. It doesn't add to the story and the characters that appear in those arcs don't appear later on. It's also very predictable. Whenever Jodie is in a tough spot and it looks like she will die, I knew she won't die. Why? Because she can't die (I'll come back to it later in the Gameplay part of reiew).

    Characters- 4/10
I didn't care about the characters. Not because I didn't want to, but because this game didn't make me fall in love with them. It's puts you in very emotional scenes early on but I didn't get emotional because I didn't care about the characters. It should have made me care about the characters first and than put me in an emotional scene. And it doesn't help that supporting cast's dialogue is badly written. Also, did we really need the emo phase? I mean, come on. It made me cringe so much.

    Graphics- 9/10
Graphics are the only good thing about this game. The only thing I don't like is the black line on the top and bottom of the screen which can't be disabled. I know it's supposed to make the game feel cinematic, but its very disorientating. I mean, I'm playing a game not watching a movie. Or am I?

    Gameplay (controls,combat etc.)- 3/10
Gameplay was horrible. It's hard to look around with Aiden and properly use him but he is actually the best thing about the gameplay. You can't look around while near any interactive object because your character will interact with that object. Also there is combat... YOU CAN'T DIE! If you try to run in front of soldiers there are two scenarios:
    1. The game doesn't let you
    2. You engage in hand to hand combat
If you do engage in combat you have quick time events. What happens if you fail them? There are three scenarios:
    1. Jodie beats the hell out of your opponent anyways
    2. Aiden kills them
    3. Some other character helps you
I even tried suicide when soldiers almost captured me and Aiden took the gun out of my hand. The game is so easy because you can't die and I hate it. It's not a challenge at all.
Also there is Aiden. Some people he can strangle, some kill, and to others he can't do anything. The reason for that? There isn't any. It's just there because othewise you would be overpowered (like not being able to die isn't overpowered enough...). They didn't even bother giving an explanation for that.

    Music- ?/10
I didn't include music score because I don't feel like music is extremely important for this game. If it was horrible I would have given it a low score, and if it was amazing I would have given it an high score. The music is OK but that's about it. Tracks didn't really stand out. It felt like generic music you hear in most movies. That's why it won't change my final score.

    Decisions- 2/10
More than 90% of decisions don't matter. I killed three people in a bar and when Nathan comes to save me he says 'Jodie are you okay?' and just ignores the dead bodies. Also when you almost choke your dad Nathan says 'You made the right choice'. Yeah, sure, encourage her to kill more people around her because that will help.

    Personal enyojment- 2/10
I hated it from beginning to the end.

    Final thoughts:
This game is a complete mess. It's the worst game I have ever played. Most of the games I play I consider playing again, but as soon as I finished this game I decided to never touch it again. If this review stopped one person from playing this game it would be a time well spent writing this.

It's really disappointing to see how awful the story is structured in this game given how great the story was in Heavy Rain.

Cliched storyline and choices barely effect the ending. A huge disappointment after Heavy Rain.

Beyond: Two Souls is the definition of how you can fail to make an even decent written story (and characters) in a game that has it as its only focus and relevance. I'll make it short cause this product is not worth your time and by saying that this review as well should take the bare minimum so here are ONLY A FEW cons:

Poor written characters that forget how their personality builds

Poor written characters that forget how their personality builds up between chapters (yes, chronologically speaking chapters.)

The incoherent way of how Aiden (Jodie's ally in form of a spirit) can and cannot act and the poor impact it has on the story regardless of your choices most of the time

The failure states, you can't fail ANYTHING in this game which should lead you to a whole different story route UNTIL THE VERY END of the game, embarassing.

These are only a few, though they shall be enough.

Well, bad story, bad characters, bad controls. An ambitious and mediocre game.

Some episodes are really long and dull. CIA agents behave like idiots. Second half of the game is a shame.

While the visual presentation for the game is great and some of the character voice acting performances are top notch, unfortunately, the poor story and unlikable main character makes Quantic Dream's usual mundane "gameplay" unbearable to put up with.

Beyond: of two souls is a fool's game I'll give you an explanation: The story is completely boring.
    The director must be blind.
The art direction is just disgusting, there is no game over and there is sexy.

Lame. Complete waste of a really great concept. The camera and controls are sluggish and overly limited. Each chapter is very brief but because of the controls end up getting drawn out painfully long. At the end of each chapter is a summary of which path you chose vs everyone else, which feels pointless. In contrast to this there are moments in the game that require you to master quicktime sequences which off no other approach. I really liked the concept, but I really hated this game. Expand

It is not a good game If a game at all and it Is not a good movie.

Good point of the game is only graphics. They are still looks good even in 2018. Other than that...well....it is a mess. I am kinda like Heavy Rain and loved a Fahrenheit. Got this game with PS plus for free and wanted to try It out right before Detroit:Become Human Game. At first game was not bad but then oh man....

I am kinda like Heavy Rain and loved a Fahrenheit. Got this game with PS plus for free and wanted to try It out right before Detroit:Become Human Game. At first game was not bad but then oh man.... Pointless entire sections, I played with non chronological order original mode(how Cage intended this game) and I hated it. Game is just a big mess. I could not care less for any character in this game. Because of so little character development time was dedicated to open characters. We have random cringy moments in Navajo and CIA missions. It feels like a collection of random scenes. Or like I accidentally skipped something in a game and see only parts of the game. All of this ghost/souls story line Is not that great. I really wanted to love this "game" but even QTE which I am minority that appreciate a good QTE gameplay like Heavy Rain. It Is also looks like there is no punishment for mistakes in a game. Just waste of time. Easily one of the worst Playstation exclusive titles of all time.

For everyone's information: it's just as easy to have an unpredictable story that is as terrible as any predictable one, what matters is how it is constructed. And the story for this game is constructed poorly. In fact, everything else about this game (with the exception for the graphics and most of the voice acting) is constructed so poorly that they can be measured with the same parameters.

First of all, there is no message. Nothing you do actually matters until the end of the game, because Aiden
just does everything for you up to that point (i.e.: YOU CANNOT EVEN LOSE).

Second of all, it's everywhere. All of the details are just scattered so nothing connects with each other. There isn't even anything that makes me go "Wow, I really care about what is going to happen to this character", because again, Aiden takes care of everything until the end (i.e.: YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A CHOICE OVER WHAT HAPPENS MOST OF THE TIME).

Third of all, if the game didn't rely on you to press a button on a few occasions, it would essentially play itself. That's it, that is the only actual thing you have to learn from this game: life will hold your hand and make you the most morally superior person the world has ever seen despite your terrible, braindead choices. Nothing you do actually matters, because everything will always turn out the same way. (i.e. MOST OF THE TIME, WHEN YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE, YOU DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO ANYTHING).

So aside from the graphics that are really good for the most part, everything else is really bad. It's hardly even a game for the most part, it's just a terrible movie with great visuals - it's like a payed visual tech demo. I'm giving this. . . thing. . . a 0.

A non linear bunch of nonsense. David Cage at his worst. Telling it non linear renders most of the choices irrelevant. Making it just on big pile of set pieces, that don't fit together.

Beyond Two Souls is the only game that i would give a 0 to, because with most video games that are made by development teams of more than twenty people, there is at least something to say about the game that is positive. For me the most important feature of this remaster is the inclusion of the optional chronological mode. It makes the story a bit less flashy but way easier to comprehend. [01/2016, p.65]

Beyond: Two Souls would've fared a lot better if it had even more visual detail, other control options and extra content to make it more like a director's cut. As it stands, though, it's a great conversion of a pretty good Quantic Dream development, mind its storytelling issues and quick-time event gameplay. Plus, it won't kill your wallet being priced for only $30. That's something even invisible deities can appreciate.
