While the visual presentation for the game is great and some of the character voice acting performances are top notch, unfortunately, the poor story and unlikable main character makes Quantic Dream's usual mundane "gameplay" unbearable to put up with.

Another work by David Cage, which I couldn't play on his original console (PS3), so being able to try it out on PS4 was ideal.

By the way, the PS4 version is graphically beautiful.

This game also has different ways to play through this game, but I defenetly prefer the original, thats how the game was meant to be played and how the story reveals itself is so perfect. Another downside is the LACK of settings. You dont have any quality/accessibility or disability controls, you cannot change anything gameplay related apart from "i never played/i played video games before" option, which is not helpful.
Otherwise story is good, I did not like the "jumping timelines" aspect at all, it did not feel better than remixed version which is chronological. Cool game, hope to see more of it in future.

Even though I found myself not liking some of the characters, I grew some sympathy for them after completing the game few times and getting the platinum trophy. The ending teases us with some kind of sequel, but it seems it's never going to happen after fan dissapointment with this title.

    Conclusion:
    > interesting story in an alternative world where humanity makes contact with different kind of entities
    > nice action scenes in QTE style gameplay
    > high quality soundtrack (especially during action scenes)
    > next generation graphics for that era, in particular great character models (based on real actors)
    > mostly meaningless choices, sometimes they are even ignored by the next chapters (which is a very big downgrade from great branching paths in Heavy Rain)

It's not quite as good as Heavy Rain in my opinion, but takes a whole new outlook on story and direction, adding a supernatrual element of a 2nd soul being attached to your character the whole way. This proves for some interesting breakout, puzzle, negotiation and sabotage sequences to be implanted. Jodie Holmes is the likeable protagonist as your live through her pain as a lab experiment. As she grows, she becomes angry and breaks out on a journey to find herself. It has several layers of metaphorical meanings to each chapter of her story, but ends with an ultimate goal that doesn't disappoint, albeit with a few cheesy moments that can be forgiven. The control is a little awkward in places but the stories of people she comes across make this a highly enjoyable game in the storytelling/point and click/narrative style game genre. There are also many touching moments which not only effect the games outcome and character endings, but questions the morals of the player as to how much control they actually have over fate. Heavy Rain's hunt for a killer is contrasted here almost as well with a 'who can you trust?' theme in Beyond: Two Souls. Expand

If you loved Heavy Rain and haven't played this one yet, don't skip over it. It's a solid journey from beginning to end. Expand

This game is absolutely worth the money and the time for me.I played it through so many times because the story is versatile so you will see a lots of diffrent places, the plot keeps you entertained and the game is long enough. The acting is great plus this game looks amazing. They built a nice fictional world as a base.

I was utterly excited about this one. After playing Heavy Rain I was into the whole butterfly effect and consequence in choice-based storytelling. This game is more focus on the plot and has much less action than most of games but it's still a good experience. I don't know. Picked this game up with the Box set, had Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain, and Detroit: Become Human. This was the first one I decided to play and I am so blown away by the story telling, the acting, the graphics. It is a true master piece for sure. Can not wait to get into Heavy Rain and Detroit as well. I hope they are on the same level as this game.

Instead of a mystery detective game, this time they have opted for a sic-fi thriller that in concept could be a modern masterpiece of storytelling but ultimately falls flat on its face due to plot holes, awkward situations, a lack of player impact, and an unnecessary complex timeline.

The game tries to be a Nolan movie by telling the events out of chronological order which if done correctly would be fantastic. However what this ends up doing is interupting the fun part of the game in which you play as adult Jodie with a bunch of boring young Jodie levels as she learns of the mysterious world around her. This format works in movies, but it fails in video games. It is one thing for a story based game to deliver “boring gameplay” but still be engaging with the writing. This game (when playing as adult Jodie) actually has pretty fun gameplay. The combat is confusing at first glance, but one can get the hang of it pretty quickly and it feels like you are playing the game more than just mashing the button on the screen. Stealth is super satisfying but is heavily underutilized. The stealth sections in this game are by far the most fun and interesting missions, but there simply aren’t enough of them.

Now I played the game in English, not QA’s native French, but the writing felt awkward many times and the dialogue also felt a bit unnatural. The writing could be better in French, but the English writing leaves much to be desired.

The plot itself is full of holes, which is not good for a plot based game, and it only gets worse on a subsequent play through. The foreshadowing is obvious and various missions feel like they belong in another game. Furthermore your choices in the game have very little impact on the ending of the game. You have far more influence than a Telltale game or Life is Strange, but far less than Heavy Rain and the true differences in endings are disappointing.

Overall, BTS is too ambitious of a project and needed more polish before its release. The game suffers from choppy writing full of holes and boring young Jodie sequences whilst it accels based on its superb voice acting and entertaining adult Jodie sequences.

Nevertheless, there are several good things about this game. First and foremost is the voice acting. Ellen Page and Willem Defoe do a fantastic job in this film. They make you care about the characters reagardless of how questionable the writing can be at certain points in time. The various missions when you play as adult Jodie actually have a

One of the most favorite games. Of course the story is simple and paying a lot of money for this film was stupid. But now that you could get it for a PS subscription plus it was a good game. Many players complained that they paid a lot of money to get such a story, but now There is no person who can say that he was wasting money. Thank you Sony for letting me touch this game. The game itself is good, the game of actors, the story is weak, but remembered, but bad grades could be avoided by removing some stupid things, like the last price in the spirit of "terminator." Besit when I look at it every time. Also, the developers lied when they said that actions affect the development of the event. But the music ... The music here is great, as always, Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe made a great soundtrack.Few appreciated this soundtrack. And I don’t understand why ...

Bottom line: Yes, the story is simple, but there are a lot of memorable moments, a perfect soundtrack, the coolest game of actors.I always laugh when I see this careless animation of people in the game "Until Dawn". in which attention is focused on the animation of faces ...
In general, the game is like a proverb "the taste and color of all markers are different.

My (not so) short review of Beyond: Two Souls

    Story- 3/10
The story is all over the place. It's like a horrible version of Steins;Gate (Steins;Gate is amazing and I'm not saying that it's bad if someone misunderstood me). You have so many flashbacks that it's really hard to understand what is going on. It jumps back and forward a lot and without any order. It feels like even game developers didn't really understand what was going on. It only starts making sense when you are close to finishing the game. Even if it starts making sense later on it's still a really bad story. It's filled with pointless arcs like the desert one. It doesn't add to the story and the characters that appear in those arcs don't appear later on. It's also very predictable. Whenever Jodie is in a tough spot and it looks like she will die, I knew she won't die. Why? Because she can't die (I'll come back to it later in the Gameplay part of reiew).

    Characters- 4/10
I didn't care about the characters. Not because I didn't want to, but because this game didn't make me fall in love with them. It's puts you in very emotional scenes early on but I didn't get emotional because I didn't care about the characters. It should have made me care about the characters first and than put me in an emotional scene. And it doesn't help that supporting cast's dialogue is badly written. Also, did we really need the emo phase? I mean, come on. It made me cringe so much.

    Graphics- 9/10
Graphics are the only good thing about this game. The only thing I don't like is the black line on the top and bottom of the screen which can't be disabled. I know it's supposed to make the game feel cinematic, but its very disorientating. I mean, I'm playing a game not watching a movie. Or am I?

    Gameplay (controls,combat etc.)- 3/10
Gameplay was horrible. It's hard to look around with Aiden and properly use him but he is actually the best thing about the gameplay. You can't look around while near any interactive object because your character will interact with that object. Also there is combat... YOU CAN'T DIE! If you try to run in front of soldiers there are two scenarios:
    1. The game doesn't let you
    2. You engage in hand to hand combat
If you do engage in combat you have quick time events. What happens if you fail them? There are three scenarios:
    1. Jodie beats the hell out of your opponent anyways
    2. Aiden kills them
    3. Some other character helps you
I even tried suicide when soldiers almost captured me and Aiden took the gun out of my hand. The game is so easy because you can't die and I hate it. It's not a challenge at all.
Also there is Aiden. Some people he can strangle, some kill, and to others he can't do anything. The reason for that? There isn't any. It's just there because othewise you would be overpowered (like not being able to die isn't overpowered enough...). They didn't even bother giving an explanation for that.

    Music- ?/10
I didn't include music score because I don't feel like music is extremely important for this game. If it was horrible I would have given it a low score, and if it was amazing I would have given it an high score. The music is OK but that's about it. Tracks didn't really stand out. It felt like generic music you hear in most movies. That's why it won't change my final score.

    Decisions- 2/10
More than 90% of decisions don't matter. I killed three people in a bar and when Nathan comes to save me he says 'Jodie are you okay?' and just ignores the dead bodies. Also when you almost choke your dad Nathan says 'You made the right choice'. Yeah, sure, encourage her to kill more people around her because that will help.

    Personal enyojment- 2/10
I hated it from beginning to the end.

    Final thoughts:
This game is a complete mess. It's the worst game I have ever played. Most of the games I play I consider playing again, but as soon as I finished this game I decided to never touch it again. If this review stopped one person from playing this game it would be a time well spent writing this.

I’ll admit now that I never made it past the couple of hours of Beyond. The story itself seems to have the potential to be at least fairly interesting, especially with the excellent motion capture performance from Ellen Page, but the gameplay itself is just so dull that I couldn’t face playing for the 8-9 hours it apparently takes to finish. Describing this game as “interactive” is really stretching the definition of the word as the game funnels you down the path it wants you to follow with no input from the player other than to click a few buttons when prompted. Even more galling is the fact that, other than a few inconsequential choices here and there, you can no real impact on the way story plays out and any attempts to be stray are blocked by artificial boundaries.

To sum it up Beyond: Two Souls is a potentially interesting two hour movie stretched out into an an almost ten hour video game.

It feels like a collection of random scenes. Or like I accidentally skipped something in a game and see only parts of the game. All of this ghost/souls story line Is not that great. I really wanted to love this "game" but even QTE which I am minority that appreciate a good QTE gameplay like Heavy Rain. It Is also looks like there is no punishment for mistakes in a game. Just waste of time. Easily one of the worst Playstation exclusive titles of all time.

I got this game for free as part of PS+ in May. I skipped buying it when it came out because the critics panned it, but I really enjoyed it! As with any David Cage/Quantic Dream game it's almost more of a movie that a traditional game. I think Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe gave great performances. I really appreciate that. It's particularly important for this game because it relies so heavily on the actors to tell the story.

I liked the gameplay too. You play partly as Jodie and partly as an "entity" (ghost) that is attached to here by a ~10m long tether. Playing as the ghost was fun. You get to do all the standard poltergeist stuff, knock objects around, flicker lights, and then there's full-on possession! I felt like my choices had real impact on the flow of events across the game. One of the chapters I enjoyed most was just trying to make dinner as an inexperienced cook on a tight timetable. It was great characterization. It was something I could sympathize with.

I enjoyed the way the concept was played out in the world. What would nations do if they had citizens with these abilities? Parents? Scientists? I think, as all good science fiction does, it asked, 'What if?' It answered the question creatively and effectively. If you like games with a heavy focus on player-choice and quick-time events, (Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit, TellTale, Life is Strange, etc.) try this out!

The game is okay, the base story idea is good, the execution bad. The game play I find horrible, controls worse than the first Resident Evil games at times, quick time sequences drawn out for a little too long each time. It has some heartwarming moments, but then just weird and dumb moments that seem written by someone in high school. I really cant give less score than 10 to this artistic videogame masterpiece! I found only positives. Story is such embracing, that I was thrilled and nearly cried at the end of the game. I created this profile for review of Detroit: Become Human and I decided to also review this.
+ Story: very strong and embracing deep story.

+ Story: very strong and embracing deep story.
+ Chronological/vanilla system of story (only on PS4)
    + Graphics
+ Acting and actors: Ellen Paige and Willem Dafoe, while their acting is created by computer scripts and imagining, its still great.
+ Characters: Great characters background, great division of villians and protagonists.

Very long time I tried to find some negatives, but I could not. Probably only negative is that B:TS was originally released on PS3 and David Cage did not before released on PS3 Detroit: Become Human. I am following David Cage work since Fahrenheit and I think B:TS is his opus magnum and no other game story he will create will be able to overcome B:TS. I think in this sense, B:TS is his curse, as it is seen on case of Detroit: Become Human which I gave only 7/10 score.
I fully recommend this game to everyone!
PS: Maybe I found one negative, movements of player character is a bit annoying.

I wanted to enjoy this game however the gameplay is clunky and made controlling Jodie a little bit annoying especially when you can't run and the movement speed is slow. The story is good and it was interesting in the way they told it...it might just be me but these games with minimal gameplay are getting played out imho especially with all the telltale games...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a technical achievement. There's not a hint of a bug, and it achieves what it set out to do magnificently. The problem is that what it set out to achieve is not particularly a game.

The game has many great ideas - controlling Aiden is a good idea, and often a lot of fun. However way too often you're forced to search around for the one thing you're able to do. And also way to often the one thing you can do is blatantly obvious and completely uninteresting. The quicktime events are particularly dull, as it's not clear you can influence the story no matter what you do. So really the gameplay is just a particularly laborious way to watch a movie.

I particularly objected to the combat. After snoozing for half ann hour helping Jodie through fascinating activities such as falling asleep, suddenly you've got to flick the joystick in some direction that's not really obvious, or else YOU FAIL and nothing much happens. Exactly what is the point? The stealth is similarly futile. The only sense of achievement I felt after these episodes was that I had endured them.

The highlights of the game are when Aiden runs rampant. Many of the characters in the game are dislikeable, and terrifying them with Aiden is the only relief from them. However I was never allowed to dispose of Ryan like I wanted to. From the moment he met Jodie was an arrogant ass, and for the rest of her life he acted like he owned her. In the end, Jodie chose to go beyond to escape his suffocating grasp.

Before I finish, I also want to **** about the camera. If you have a 3D world, give me a camera that can see it. Let me look where I need to look. Don't restrict my point of view. Way too many times I was dragging Jodie off on a kind of random trajectory because the camera wouldn't go to where I needed. This is either incompetent or vindictive game design, and is unforgivable. Uncharted was the last game which should have had that problem.

In summary, "Beyond: Two Souls" has some pretty classy story telling, but is badly let down by insufferable characters, appalling camera control, and a misunderstanding about the nature of a game as distinct from a movie. I did play through it rather quickly, but as nothing much I did mattered that wasn't so difficult.

I got "Beyond: Two Souls" as a free monthly download on PSPlus. When there is a new release from the same studio, I shall be wary of paying much for than that if they are going to deliver the same sort of content.

Beyond: Two Souls is a choice-based, narrative-driven adventure game, where your choices affect the story and lead to multiple endings, just like all those Traveller's Tales games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, etc.). Some people will call it an "interactive movie" but they'd be wrong. This game is intended to be experienced by both gamers and non-gamers, so it lacks any real challenge or traditional videogame action.

The game's story on the original PS3 version was presented in a non-linear way, where events were shown with many backs and forths through time, so people may have been confused back then. On PS4 you have the option to watch the story unfold in a chronological way, and I believe this is the way new players should experience it.

The game tells the life story of protagonist Jodie Holmes (portrayed by Ellen Page), who's a really likeable and sympathetic character. Jodie has suffered a hard life because she has been linked with a ghost named Aiden since birth, which is both a gift and a curse. She has been raised by professor Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) and then her life journey becomes a crazy roller coaster. The plot has twists and turns, as well as high and low points, but I think David Cage (the game's writer and director) should have kept it more down to Earth. The "Homeless" chapter is beautiful and emotional, but when Jodie blowed a town up or was made to fight against supernatural beings, the script went the BS route. The overall plot is a sci-fi mess with many unrelated chapters being linked together with little or no transitioning, unfortunately.

Gameplay is simplified compared to most games out there and QTEs are nothing like the mess of the developer's previous game Heavy Rain. Interactivity with the surroundings is severely limited though. Controls and the camera are problematic, but the game is slowly paced so the problem is almost non-existent. The ghost named Aiden provides some meaningful ways to interact with the environment and solve some light puzzles, but he's a lost opportunity because he's under-utilised by David Cage. Also Aiden's capabilities are very inconsistent, on one instance he can pass through walls and choke people, and on another it's not possible to do so, all due to the script. At least the game can be played in 2 player co-op, with one controlling Jodie and the other Aiden.

Production values are very high for an adventure game like this, with Hollywood stars Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe starring in the lead roles. All the characters are rendered beautifully, at the expense of the environments though which feature noticeably low polygon counts and shadow pop-ins. The soundtrack is very good.

All in all, Beyond: Two Souls was a failed experiment for David Cage and Quantic Dream. It proved to be a big mis-step after the success of Heavy Rain, but hopefully they have learnt from their mistakes since then.

Lame. Complete waste of a really great concept. The camera and controls are sluggish and overly limited. Beyond: Two Souls would've fared a lot better if it had even more visual detail, other control options and extra content to make it more like a director's cut. As it stands, though, it's a great conversion of a pretty good Quantic Dream development, mind its storytelling issues and quick-time event gameplay. Plus, it won't kill your wallet being priced for only $30. That's something even invisible deities can appreciate.
