Beyond Two Souls is a fascinating game which is unlike any game I've played before. The story telling is great! I played it as the game originally intended and had no trouble following. It's not without it's flaws though. The controls are poorly executed and the camera could have been better. It's still worth a shot.

I wanted to enjoy this game however the gameplay is clunky and made controlling Jodie a little bit annoying especially when you can't run and the movement speed is slow. The story is good and it was interesting in the way they told it...it might just be me but these games with minimal gameplay are getting played out imho especially with all the telltale games...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beyond: Two Souls is a well-refined, innovative art-form of a game, let down largely by its tired final third. Rather than responding to criticism of Heavy Rain (and for that matter, all of Quantic Dream's games) being little more than 'interactive movies', the developers took the idea and ran with it even further. If you liked Heavy Rain, it's likely that you'll enjoy Beyond for all the same reasons, and the same can be said for if you weren't a fan of the studio's previous attempt, as issues with fiddly controls remain, despite the generation-leap.

Nevertheless, Beyond has its own identity and for the most part it handles it well. For a game based mostly on story, it's important that the actors get their performances right, and thankfully Ellen Page, Willem Dafoe and co. prove just why they are big industry names by delivering lines from the interesting script with wonderful conviction. The story really does feel intelligently written early on, but unfortunately it seems as though the writers ran out of ideas about two thirds of the way through and decided to resort to exhausted cliches such as the love interest sacrificing himself for the protagonist just before the finale.

The game does a good job of giving you a variety of things to do, from riding a horse to piloting a submarine, besides the usual walking around. That said, the pacing also drifts off towards the end of the game, as an underwater section drags out for too long than I would have liked. I can't help but feel the if the plot was a bit more tight; perhaps a bit shorter, then the developers wouldn't have lost sight of what made the story so interesting and this could be one of the industry's claims to rival movie scriptwriting.

As I said, story is the game's primary focus but you will be asked for some input in order to keep things ticking along. The interface is well designed, opting for a minimalist look that never feels intrusive or distracting, meanwhile the slow-mo fight scenes which ask you to move an analogue stick in the direction Jodie is moving require you to pay more attention to your character rather than simply following a QTE's instructions. It's a clever move, but doesn't stop the game from using a plethora of QTE's anyway.

Beyond: Two Souls has a lot going for it. Almost every mission has multiple paths to play through, and it's always interesting to check your version against that of the rest of the world via the post-mission stats. This does encourage replayability, but Beyond could have been a lot more than what it ultimately turned out to be. With more time spent on tidying up the conclusion of the story, this could have been a masterpiece in video game storytelling, and with a refined control system to match the stellar amount of varying animations the protagonist is given, we could have had one of the most enjoyable games to play too. Instead, Beyond: Two Souls is still worth your time if you ever had a passing interest in its predecessor, but don't expect it to change your mind about the type of game it's going for.

Beyond: Two Souls is a choice-based, narrative-driven adventure game, where your choices affect the story and lead to multiple endings, just like all those Traveller's Tales games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, etc.). Some people will call it an "interactive movie" but they'd be wrong. This game is intended to be experienced by both gamers and non-gamers, so it lacks any real challenge or traditional videogame action.

The game's story on the original PS3 version was presented in a non-linear way, where events were shown with many backs and forths through time, so people may have been confused back then. On PS4 you have the option to watch the story unfold in a chronological way, and I believe this is the way new players should experience it.

The game tells the life story of protagonist Jodie Holmes (portrayed by Ellen Page), who's a really likeable and sympathetic character. Jodie has suffered a hard life because she has been linked with a ghost named Aiden since birth, which is both a gift and a curse. She has been raised by professor Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) and then her life journey becomes a crazy roller coaster. The plot has twists and turns, as well as high and low points, but I think David Cage (the game's writer and director) should have kept it more down to Earth. The "Homeless" chapter is beautiful and emotional, but when Jodie blowed a town up or was made to fight against supernatural beings, the script went the BS route. The overall plot is a sci-fi mess with many unrelated chapters being linked together with little or no transitioning, unfortunately.

Gameplay is simplified compared to most games out there and QTEs are nothing like the mess of the developer's previous game Heavy Rain. Interactivity with the surroundings is severely limited though. Controls and the camera are problematic, but the game is slowly paced so the problem is almost non-existent. The ghost named Aiden provides some meaningful ways to interact with the environment and solve some light puzzles, but he's a lost opportunity because he's under-utilised by David Cage. Also Aiden's capabilities are very inconsistent, on one instance he can pass through walls and choke people, and on another it's not possible to do so, all due to the script. At least the game can be played in 2 player co-op, with one controlling Jodie and the other Aiden.

Production values are very high for an adventure game like this, with Hollywood stars Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe starring in the lead roles. All the characters are rendered beautifully, at the expense of the environments though which feature noticeably low polygon counts and shadow pop-ins. The soundtrack is very good.

All in all, Beyond: Two Souls was a failed experiment for David Cage and Quantic Dream. It proved to be a big mis-step after the success of Heavy Rain, but hopefully they have learnt from their mistakes since then.

The main thing about this game is that: "your choices matter". Well.. they don't. Almost none of the choices you make seem to affect the story, and the quick time events have no consequence to failing. I know the argument is that people who play it will most likely do them anyways, and I can see where you're coming from there; you'd most likely do the QTEs to get the full experience. The story feels very disjointed, going all over the place with Jodie's life, one minute you can be a child in a snowball fight, next you can be in the FBI. It doesn't really feel fluid when it comes to story telling; you can get an idea of what the story has to offer, but what the game tells you is just examples of how Jodie uses her powers. There are some redeeming qualities about this game though, the graphics are great, the performance by Ellen Page is brilliant, the world is engrossing, It's one of those games that you don't play, you experience. It's a good experience, but not a great game. The game itself isn't really all that great, but as an experience, you'll get some enjoyment out of it.

Beyond Two Souls gets a 6/10.

Game has a few very fun sections (ambassade, Africa, homeless), but also a fair share of very boring/annoying segments which didn't add much to the game but almost had me give up out of boredom.
Do not give up however, the last mission is quite a blast and a grand finale.
The game encourages you to replay missions, but when there are so much tedious parts to replay, I'm not going to bother. It was a nice run though.

Adding chronological style to the game, solves my biggest complain for ps3 version. Because I just hated that shuffled storytelling: when you just started to feel immersed the game pulls you out and throws you to absolutely different place with no connection with previous. So thanks for that, David.

Unfortunately, the game and the story feel lackluster. Makes you wonder if the game's success is due to its cast rather than the story.

Chapter based storytelling in games is tricky but it has worked for other games like Telltales games. However, here it feels like there is not a very good progression between chapters. And not only in the story, but the characters as well. Crucial characters feel like they are not the same person from one chapter to another, and you don't see that progression being told.

The story itself had potential but it feels like it didn't work pretty well. Some chapters are very good, but add nothing to the main plot, which is just a damn shame, because the game is supposed to be a story-driven game. And the writing, I mean... Come on. It is not very good, in. a. story. driven. game. There are a few very well thought scenes, but there is some very cringy dialogue in this game. The writing makes the acting look bland, which we know it is not the actors bad because this is a pretty strong cast.

Regarding gameplay itself, it is mostly QTE based. Nothing wrong with QTEs, when used properly, but here sometimes no matter what you do, your actions seem pointless. There is no punishment for failing a QTE part. You can just leave your controller and the overall result does not have a lot of variation to it, with a few exceptions in some scenes. There are some interesting stealth sections, but with a disappointing chapter ending and poor writing.

DefinItely wait for a sale in the store, and good thing it comes with Heavy Rain. If you manage to get both in a good price, it's worth it. But I think that's mainly due to Heavy Rain and not Beyond.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a technical achievement. There's not a hint of a bug, and it achieves what it set out to do magnificently. The problem is that what it set out to achieve is not particularly a game.

The game has many great ideas - controlling Aiden is a good idea, and often a lot of fun. However way too often you're forced to search around for the one thing you're able to do. And also way to often the one thing you can do is blatantly obvious and completely uninteresting. The quicktime events are particularly dull, as it's not clear you can influence the story no matter what you do. So really the gameplay is just a particularly laborious way to watch a movie.

I particularly objected to the combat. After snoozing for half ann hour helping Jodie through fascinating activities such as falling asleep, suddenly you've got to flick the joystick in some direction that's not really obvious, or else YOU FAIL and nothing much happens. Exactly what is the point? The stealth is similarly futile. The only sense of achievement I felt after these episodes was that I had endured them.

The highlights of the game are when Aiden runs rampant. Many of the characters in the game are dislikeable, and terrifying them with Aiden is the only relief from them. However I was never allowed to dispose of Ryan like I wanted to. From the moment he met Jodie was an arrogant ass, and for the rest of her life he acted like he owned her. In the end, Jodie chose to go beyond to escape his suffocating grasp.

Before I finish, I also want to **** about the camera. If you have a 3D world, give me a camera that can see it. Let me look where I need to look. Don't restrict my point of view. Way too many times I was dragging Jodie off on a kind of random trajectory because the camera wouldn't go to where I needed. This is either incompetent or vindictive game design, and is unforgivable. Uncharted was the last game which should have had that problem.

In summary, "Beyond: Two Souls" has some pretty classy story telling, but is badly let down by insufferable characters, appalling camera control, and a misunderstanding about the nature of a game as distinct from a movie. I did play through it rather quickly, but as nothing much I did mattered that wasn't so difficult.

I got "Beyond: Two Souls" as a free monthly download on PSPlus. When there is a new release from the same studio, I shall be wary of paying much for than that if they are going to deliver the same sort of content.

Beyond: Two Souls would've fared a lot better if it had even more visual detail, other control options and extra content to make it more like a director's cut. As it stands, though, it's a great conversion of a pretty good Quantic Dream development, mind its storytelling issues and quick-time event gameplay. Plus, it won't kill your wallet being priced for only $30. That's something even invisible deities can appreciate.
