Battlefield V

Battlefield V is already better than its excellent predecessor, even though we'll have to wait for some promised components which will actually make it a bigger game as well.

Ripe with potential but riddled with problems, the new Battlefield will be brilliant six months from now. Right now, however, it’s merely a good shooter. [Issue#157, p.83]

Battlefield V is endless contradiction, from its great, wonderful BSO to the lack of efficiency in its performance, pop in, and the beautiful places where we fight, and the bad ways EA has sold this product, this title ends being a lesson of how to not sell a videogame and how to make a great second world war game in 2018.

Battlefield V is another fun entry in this well established shooter series. The problem is that it's full of bugs and feels unfinished at launch.

When everything is in place, this might turn out to be the best first-person shooter around. It’s frustrating that we’ll have to wait until at least March 2019 for that to happen.

Even in its current state, Battlefield V succeeds in delivering that familiar, core experience in spite of missing some content, and while the thought of an incomplete game might deter some from pulling the trigger on a purchase, those eager to enlist will still find plenty to keep them occupied. Sure, it can occasionally be a bit rough around the edges, but this doesn't stop those epic 'wow' moments from coming thick and fast. Gorgeous visuals; incredible sound design; unprecedented levels of destruction - DICE is firmly focused on long-term player engagement here and its decision to scrap the Season Pass altogether is definitely a refreshing step in the right direction. Well played, guys.

As one of the best looking FPS on the market, nothing else can compete with the destruction and visual assault of Battlefield V. However, this great war stands incomplete with many features not yet available at launch.

Battlefield V is exactly what you expect from a Battlefield title, and nothing more. A mediocre single-player campaign, mixed with a solid multiplayer and superior visuals and sound design. But the problem is that there's no notable improvements from the previous version, and the game is buggy and incomplete. Maybe future updates and DLCs will solve everything, but at its current state, Battlefield V is just another Battlefield title.

Boasting breathtaking spectacle and some of the most refined series multiplayer to date, Battlefield V's missing features prevent EA's latest from soaring to the heights that it deserves to. Nonetheless, DICE's latest shooter effort both maintains and enhances the series essence to stake its claim as one of the better FPS titles available on PS4.

Despite these drawbacks though, Battlefield V offers some of the most rewarding, visceral WWII action in any game out there thanks to genius little tweaks to gameplay and immersion, all produced with an audio-visual technical mastery that is second to none. With its free live-service component as well, the future for the franchise looks very good.

Who knew that the horrors of war could ultimately end up being so goddamn beautiful?

Battlefield V changes the way historical FPS games are told, as it puts the human psyche ahead of glory, fame, and frags, or at least it does so until you join a multiplayer match.

EA and DICE seem to have lost sight of what made this series a true contender for the FPS crown, and both the gameplay and the content are suffering as a result.

Disappointing singleplayer campaign, rock solid multiplayer modes... What else is new? Nothing much, really - especially since DICE appears to be more than happy to keep treading water instead of even trying to raise the bar.

DICE almost always delivers when it comes to technology and multiplayer gameplay, and this is true with BFV. But Battlefield V is also plagued with bugs, looks half-finished and, overall, it gives the impression of a product that was rushed to the market.

An expertly crafted shooter with worthwhile narrative endeavours, that’s a little too light on content for the time being.

Battlefield V is going to be a great game, of that we’re sure, but due to a number of glaring omissions at launch and one too many glitches, the final product isn’t there just yet. Series veterans are sure to feel at home with what’s on offer now, though, thanks to a solid multiplayer offering that sticks to the tried and true nature of what makes Battlefield tick.

What could have been the best Battlefield of the modern era fears like a mere shell of a game, with missing features, too little content, and far too many bugs.

Not as drastic a change up as its WW1 predecessor, nor as wild or wondrous, Battlefield 5’s deliberative design sidelines its strengths as a simulative sandbox.

In many ways, Battlefield V feels like a big step backwards for the franchise. The campaign is boring and frustrating, multiplayer is unbalanced, and bugs keep popping up in every mode to ruin the experience. The fortification system is a good shakeup, but the good it brings is tempered by the cumbersome and murky Grand Operations. With some patches, balance changes and bug squashing, BFV could be a fantastic game, but at the moment, this soldier needs to go back to basic training.

The game doesn’t just erase these details, it overwrites them. The fantasy of lone heroism displaces the facts behind history’s slow and collective struggles.
