I’m absolutely impressed by every aspect of Battlefield 1. While it’s easy to think that the weapons and machines available to a game based on the first World War might feel like a step back for military shooters, I think you’ll be surprised by how exciting and modern Battlefield 1 still manages to feel.

DICE made a perfect game with Battlefield 1. It has a competent campaign that properly does justice to The Great War and a deep, fun multiplayer experience that reminds us why Battlefield does it better than anyone on a massive scale.

One perennial problem DICE solved with Battlefield 1 is the quality of its campaign.

Despite a very short campaign, Battlefield 1 still offers the best single-player experience in the series. Mix it with a huge, brilliant multi-player that the series is known for and you have an almost complete package. Definitely the best approach to World War 1 yet.

The rougher edges of WWI make Battlefield a louder, fiercer, more engaging shooter. But the carefully interwoven campaign and multiplayer aspects show a more reflective side. [Christmas 2016, p.86]

Minor gfx hiccups aside, Battlefield 1 is as mustard as the gas it depicts. Winding back the clock and rediscovering its infantry roots has let DICE craft one of the best Battlefields in the series. Oddly, we want more solo DLC. [Christmas 2016, p70]

Though a sluggish leveling system prevents a consistent sense of progression, the stirring single-player campaign, and endlessly enjoyable multiplayer modes cement Battlefield 1 as a new staple in the first-person shooter genre, and prove that WW1 is just as captivating of a time period to explore than any imagining of modern or future eras.

Battlefield 1 is a triumphant return to form for the series and a must-have for any first-person shooter aficionado.
  10. Battlefield 1 is one of this fall’s biggest surprises with a very compelling campaign, strategic gameplay and solid multiplayer effort. The game is a refreshing change of pace in an industry currently filled with futuristic shooters that emphasize running around guns blazing.

World War I is hard material to tackle, but DICE have managed to do it respectably enough. Battlefield 1’s campaign is memorable, and it’s multiplayer, brutal. The latter doesn’t necessarily provide a whole new experience, but a coat of paint from The Great War certainly makes the series feel nice and fresh again.

Beautiful graphics, an intriguing singleplayer campaign and rock-solid multiplayer modes that deliver in every way imaginable... Battlefield 1 is the best game the franchise has delivered in years.

Battlefield 1 has a few small errors, but you will hardly notice them as scale of the online action is so big. Finally even online play is impressive, which makes Battlefield 1 the best Battlefield-game in years.

Battlefield 1 is an excellent game, thanks to the awesome setting. The characters and the well-written story make the singleplayer just as worth while as the multiplayer. We are impressed.

It’s reverent without being mawkish, exciting without being tacky, and robust with content despite all the usual trappings of a big-budget EA product. War is hell… but Battlefield 1 is pretty damn lovely.

While maps are not its strong point, Battlefield 1’s dynamically destructible environments and the minutely balanced mechanics of its classes and gadgets keep the moment-to-moment first-person shooting varied and engaging.

DICE takes aim with Battlefield 1 and it ends up being a jackpot. It couldn't be a better game taking into consideration the limitations imposed due to the game taking place during WWI. It offers some of the best maps ever seen in the franchise. Tons of charisma for a franchise that stands tall against the dictatorship of sci-fi and double jump.

The blessing and curse of Battlefield 1 is that it is another well-polished entry in a series that clearly follows a sacred gameplay formula. Fans who have enjoyed the series thus far will find the same enjoyment in this latest entry, and aspects of World War I have clearly been carefully curated and incorporated into the game. However, it does feel that the series is playing things too safe. As good as the multiplayer is, I'm hopeful that future entries will take more risk. In the meantime, Battlefield 1 is another great offering that follows the series' enjoyable gameplay template.

A few minor shortcomings aside, Battlefield 1 is just the type of reinvigoration that the franchise needed.

Though the “1” in its name may officially stand for the Great War, it could also represent the rebirth of a franchise that took a bit of a beating with Battlefield 4, went down an awkward path with Hardline, before finally rising as the Battlefield title that simply all shooter fans must buy.

Battlefield 1 is not the enlightened superior rescuing us from sci-fi boredom. Its refreshment is largely skin deep, and none of the new additions change that; not the horses, not the trains, not the blimps, not the bayonets. Change the guns and skins to a modern flavour and you’d never know the difference.

Battlefield 1's campaign is thin as ever, but most will be on board for the multiplayer, which – while simplified compared with recent entries – remains practically peerless when it comes to delivering intense, large-scale battles.

Most of my complaints about Battlefield 1 are small. With a few tweaks and an update or two, Battlefield 1 could be the best in the series, and it feels like the refresh this series has needed for a while. Setting Battlefield in WW1 paid off and I’m excited to see what the series does next. But for now, I can’t wait to jump back in and pull off another successful bayonet charge.

Battlefield 1 is gorgeous and impressive in all domains, and for once in the series, the singleplayer campaign lives up to the multiplayer mode. Except some problems on PS4/Xbox One (framerate issues and minor bugs), the main problem here is the inexplicable absence of the French and Russian armies.

While the multiplayer rightfully chooses to be a fun shooter first, the campaign tries to strike a reasonable balance on this front, delivering a memorable series of war stories that drive home the cost of war. And while it can't resist urge to go over the top at times, in doing so, it at least delivers one of the best Battlefield campaigns to date.

Battlefield 1 is a fantastic game. If you want a shooter that replicates the epic scale of two armies at war, or one that prioritises tactical thought over twitchy trigger fingers, this is the FPS for you.

A remarkable overachiever. Battlefield 1's creators could have taken the easy road. They could have omitted a campaign. They could have hastily assembled its multiplayer like the atrociously conceived Star Wars Battlefront. They didn’t. In this day and age, that makes all the difference in the world and it made all the difference here. Battlefield 1 could have been a disrespectful mess. Instead, it rises above to deliver an outstanding historical shooter.

The single player is a solidBattlefield 1 is a great game, but the people giving it 10's are crazy or haven't played the game long enough. The single player is a solid 10. It's super fun, immersive and tells a great story... but it's pretty short. The graphics throughout the game are gorgeous, and everything is perfectly fluid.

Multiplayer unfortunately is about a 6, which is where you will spend most of your time. You've still got the great graphics, but in terms of actual gameplay it too often feels like a just whole bunch of chaos. War, of course, is chaos... so in some sense I guess that works, but the gist of what you do in every multiplayer scenario is run around randomly until you get killed or see a hint of moment and start shooting. There's sniping and healing, etc... but for the most part you play for a short burst until you get clipped by a random bullet. It's really frustrating when you start taking damage and can't figure out where it's coming from which happens constantly, and if you run around a corner an another enemy appears, skill takes a back seat to luck... what weapon are you carrying and how twitchy is your finger.

In Conquest mode, for example, you can choose to spawn on other teammates or certain spawn points, and before you have even turned around or walked two steps you are shot in the back of the head, and forced to respawn again. You might run out of a building and a bomb from a plane drops on your head... respawn again. Spawn in a tank, but the tank is at 10% health and you're suddenly dead again. And don't forget the enemies can spawn anywhere too... You might round a corner only to have someone spawn behind you. There's nothing you can do but take the death.

You will never feel like you are in control of the game or that you can just play better to change the outcome. Nor do you ever feel like winning means anything. You'll continue to play to get more weapon upgrades, but at the end of the day whether you are at the top or bottom of the scoreboard means nothing. Your team feels soooo impersonal.

Basically multiplayer feels very "casual".... It's really cool to chill and play like you're in a real war, but the randomness feels unrewarding and wins feel unrewarding.

Don't get me wrong... Battlefield 1 is a solid 7 great game. But it is far from a 10... It's a war simulator with very realistic graphics and effects. It's multiplayer is fun to play, but begins to get boring due to your lack of control of outcomes and generally unrewarding feeling you have after each match.
