Everything that has to do with gameplay is great, but the overused Batmobile and the absolutely atrocious pacing bring it down a bit.

Combat, as usual, is enjoyably fluid but contentutistically shallow, and the game lacks Arkham City’s intriguing boss-fights to make up for it, but on the other hand stealth improved tremendously thanks to way more strategic options and diverse threats. I was never a "huge" fan of the Arkham series, mostly due to its basic combat system and endless amounts of "fluff" (small tasks where you just push a single button). And this game isn't much different in that regard.

However, I still very much enjoy all these games. Adventuring throughout Gotham is always fun, and the Metroidvania-like missions are always exciting, with a mysterious and thriller-like tone.

The reason why I consider this the weakest in the trilogy (ignoring Origins) is because of two reasons: The BatmoTank, and the story.

BatmoTank is the most talked about critique in the game, but with good reason. It always slows down your enjoyment of the game, as you have to stop, shoot robotic tanks, drive, and repeat. The problem is not necessarily that it's not fun, but rather how repetitive the mission is.

And the story... it's good in concept, but in the context of the games, it feels very out of place and predictable. Furthermore, the side-mission storylines are nothing to ride home about either, with unfulfilling resolutions and forgettable storylines. The main storyline is still dramatic and good, just predictable.

Though overall, the game is still filled with enjoyment, with some of the best graphics that even today's games (Jan 2023) cannot compete with, along with fun missions and the best side character in all of gaming (I won't spoil it, but you'll know who. They're there throughout most the game.)

Let me start out by saying that I love the character of Batman and correspondingly love previous installments in the Arkham franchise. Admittedly, I have not played Origins, but Asylum is a solid 9/10 and City is a 10/10.

And the reason I love these games boils down to one word: freedom. In Asylum, we were given the blueprint to something extraordinary. A Batman game where you could take down a room chock full of thugs in a way completely dependent on your play style: you could go in guns blazing, never stopping to counter and consistently looking to land the next critical strike; you could play as meticulous evader who waits for the opening and takes down the opponents slowly and steadily; or you could integrate Batman's multitude of gadgets into your fight. The predator encounters also presented us with something special, giving us the freedom to plan out our attacks against armed thugs in different ways after scanning the room. Of course, there were certainly some challenges presented in this game where there was only one way to get it done, but we justifiably excused those instances on the account of Arkham Asylum showing us something truly original, something that truly, dare I say it, made me feel like Batman.

City took the mechanics of Asylum even further, presenting players with a slew of enhancements to the combat and predator challenges. Quickfire gadgets, new gadget upgrades, new takedown moves, and new gliding mechanics set the benchmark for Batman even higher. With all of these new tools at our disposal, we, as players, had a plethora of ways to approach any given hostile situation. Will you perch on top of a building, throw a freeze grenade blast, and lock a group of thugs in place all at once before picking each off one-by-one? Will you dive bomb in for shockwave attack, stun everybody and then take them out with critical strikes? Will you use sonic batarangs to knock them out one by one? Or will you simply walk up to the group and take them out with nothing but your fists? You, as the player, got to choose how to approach such situations, and that's what made the game so memorable and fun. The Mr. Freeze fight is a standout example of a fan-favorite boss because you have so much freedom with which to take him down. There are many different ways to lower his health that can all be done in many different sequences anywhere in the boss arena.

To an extent, Knight does extend some aspects of the predator and combat challenges. We get the fear multi-takedown, my favorite addition to the game, along with new gadgets and takedowns (such as the environmental and team takedowns) for batman to integrate into his fights. But unfortunately, these segments do not make up the majority of the game. Instead the majority of the game is dominated by one tool: the Batmobile.

Now, people have harped about the inclusion of the Batmobile in this game for years, but I don't think I've ever seen someone truly explain why it is that people were so frustrated with its addition. The frustration, from my perspective, comes down to the idea of freedom. There is only one way to defeat a Cobra tank: sneak behind it and shoot it in the Batmobile. There is only one way to solve all of the main story puzzles that let you infiltrate buildings with your Batmobile. There is only one way to catch speeding vehicles that you need to pursue: in the Batmobile. What if I wanted to take the vehicle our from the skies, jump down on it like a terrifying creature of the night? What if I wanted to plan the vehicle's route and set up a trap for it? It was not Rocksteady's inclusion of the Batmobile that angered fans but simply the fact that the vehicle takes away so much freedom from the player by only allowing things to play out in one way. This, coupled with the fact that you cannot seem to go even a single mission through the game without needing to use the Batmobile is what led to the discontent.

In my perspective, while Knight is not as good as Asylum or City, it is still a game worth playing for Batman fans even if by the end of the game, I felt less like Batman and more like a target of army propaganda.

This game is in some ways an excellent game. Combat and visuals are both excellent. Some great moments throughout the game. The Harley Quinn level is a noticeable highpoint of the video game with its excellent bosses and level design. The story is a downgrade from the previous games as it is very silly when it is trying to be serious.

Maybe it's the underwhelming addition of the Batmobile, which you will spend a majority of the time with when against tank enemies, or maybe it's the disapointing story which feels like a huge step down from Arkham Asylum and City. It could just be my lack of patience that's due from the fatigue of the amount of Batman titles released all within a small window of time, or it could be that this game simply isn't up to standard. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know I'm going to get flamed by this review but this game was unnecessarily long. Like parts of the game I think I'm at the end but then the game said I think not. The Arkham Knight villain was so obvious if you read the comics or know jalf of the DC characters backstory to get the hints of who's under the mask. If not you'll be oblivious until his reveal but it's still not surprising with either party. I literally said screw this when I had to do the various side quest just to fake his death and I'm assuming that's when you finish the game. Overall though the story was fantastic but it's just too long and way too much to do compared to the other two Batman games. Expand

Then you just rinse and repeat that process a couple times until the side-mission is complete. These missions feel more like filler than anything engaging.

Another big mistake is the game's over-reliance on the Bat-mobile. The Bat-mobile itself is just ok and it's a lot more fun to play as Batman, but you can't do anything in this game without having Bat-mobile sections shoved down your throat!

But those are my only complaints. The rest of the game is extremely well done, but if you want to play something truly special, I would stick to some of the other games in the series.

This game has everything to be the best of the Arkham franchise. However it is infested with bugs in hit boxes on the stage and enemies; for example: the indestructible elements in the scenario have a collision similar to the walls and can block combos in combat mode, which by the way always cause the player to get stuck on the sides of the arena.

This game is fine. The combat and stealth never could have been better, the Batmobile while stupid for tank scenes is good for driving and I loved the races. However, the main flaws are in the story. The Arkham Knight is a boring character, and the Joker sickness is stupid. Some of the side missions are good however half are horrible. It has been 9 months since the events of Arkham City and the death of a certain character (No name given here because I don't know if this counts as spoiler even if it happened in the prequel). Scarecrow is threatening Gotham City with his fear toxin. The whole city is evacuated and Batman has to deal with this menace. Additionally there is a new enemy the Arkham Knight who knows far more about Batman then any other of his enemies. The story is good and immersive from start to finish. There is something that I cant spoil that makes it enjoyable and is a good twist or brilliant idea. Alone this makes the game better and I was most entertained. Lets say it is all inside his head ;-). However the Arkham Knight was disappointing. When you have even a little knowledge you think about who he could be and make a conclusion that it could not be a certain character as it would be much too obvious, a letdown and boring. It was that character and they advertised the Arkham Knight as something special and mysterious. The addition that we all were hyped for was the Batmobile. While being firstly satisfying and awesome it gets soon boring and repetitive or just overstayed its welcome. After a while you want to skip using it. Then there is the true ending. You have too solve all Riddlers trophies to get it. It is a waste of time as there are over 200 and I as nearly all others don't have the patience to do this (and skill for some if I am honest). Luckily there is YouTube for this. The gameplay is rock solid or stays at the formula of the Arkham games and the stealth and free flow combat system is satisfying. I must repeat that this games make you feel like Batman. It is still satisfying to use stealth to incapacitate one enemy after the other without getting seen or feel the impact of hits and counters in the free flow combat. I must however also admit that it gets a bit repetitive after 3 games. You get also new gadgets that are satisfying. Warning: Some can be missed or skipped. The graphic and representation is really good. The soundtrack helps to create a good atmosphere. I think I have enough dodged the bullet. Overall this is my least liked Arkham game. Some disappointments add up like the Batmobile, true ending, some parts of the (good) story and the identity of the Arkham Knight. Sounds maybe too harsh because it is still a good game but not as good and impressive as Arkham Asylum and Arkham City at their time. Expand

Good action and a number of fun puzzles and even some good fights. But here are the main problems.

The story is okay but very predictable. The big reveals were either - yeah, we saw that coming, or ho hum.

There are a gazillion times when you have to fight a big crowd of enemies. It's like an AR battle royal challenge over and over and over and over again. Plus, when an enemy flashes red you're supposed to leave or aim at him and hit him quick with a electric or batarang or grapple. But this probably doesn't work half the time. Sometimes, he will fire the bolt off just to the side of the enemy - why would the program ever even aim there? Fights like that are more designed for side challenges, not constant every mission. And I swear the disruptor doesn't always work, or at least it's unclear when you've disarmed someone. I still take shocks even after disrupting shock stick guys. So what's the point if one of the big thugs can generate electricity with his hands anyway. Batman's reaction time stinks too - sometimes you'll hit counter in time but he's still finishing some other animation and still takes a new hit. The whole fighting thing is a mess of button mashing.

And, as in other Batman games - he is just so so weak. And that's on normal mode. He needs multiple punches to hurt anybody - the game is constantly reminding you how tough he is or how high-tech his vehicle is but he can't even knock out a random thug in the street shy of 3 punches and a bigger guy over 8 or more. He has just about nothing that can take out multiple enemies at once - which isn't necessarily a bad feature, except that's ALL Batman ever finds himself needing to do and he has no gadget for it. The ice thing doesn't work half the time. You aren't always able to do the dive drop shock. It's just so ridiculous that he would not have some sort of grapple spin move or a stun grenade when he finds himself in a situation like that a hundred times a day. When he sneaks behind one of the "tough" tanks, he has to wait for a lock ring to zoom in on a weak point - this takes forever - so long that much of the time, the tank simply turns around where you are vulnerable but have no choice but to be because otherwise the lock doesn't zoom. Can he not invest in a lock mechanism that works farther than 20 yards? Side characters were boasting how high-tech the batmobile is. When actually in many ways, it's actually quite archaic. At no point do you ever feel very powerful or anything resembling a superhero. It seems any random thug given access to his arsenal would do just as well.

Then there are the races - these aren't fun. Too many times the race depends on some timing or simply learning the route after getting killed over and over like a 1990 NES game. That's not intuitive. The load times between deaths are way too long to mess around with a learn-the-route-and-die trial. And sometimes the car just spins wildly out of control if you graze some walls, but not others, and it's hard to tell which ones he will bash through and which ones will send him spinning. It's all a recipe for a lot of long sighs while waiting for the death load screen to end over and over.

There are way too many riddler trophies, some which take a number of minutes to mess with - so they never should have prevented you from fighting riddler based on such a long and tedious task. And some of them you're simply not told what you are supposed to do. Like one I steered a robot to get a riddle for me and he just stood there without picking it up. So I had to look online. Apparently I didn't steer him "close" enough to the riddle even though he was on top of it, so I assumed I did it wrong, but I wouldn't know that because they don't tell you what you are supposed to do - or at least you don't have the option of toggling some sort of "what am I supposed to do button" in such cases - instead of stopping the game and doing a web search. Some of the puzzles are clever and you can figure them out without too much impossibility, as long as you're patient. But requiring hundreds of these to advance in a riddler mission is just ridiculous.

The stealth mechanic is probably the best part of the game. You actually can combine your fighting with some actual thinking instead of tap, tap, tap X-O-Triangle-X-O-L2 blah blah square blah like a madman. Dividing and conquering the enemy is challenging but not overly difficult (on normal mode). It's not as good as the stealth in Styx or Blacklist, but not bad.

His arsenal of gadgets to solve puzzles is also fun to cycle through while trying to solve this or that puzzle. Sort of a - which tool will work best to solve this.

7/10. Maybe it’s because I liked Arkham City so much, but this game is highly overrated. Story isn’t anything special, Arkham Knight is a letdown of a villain. The Batmobile has made me quite finishing the game. Shame as I liked the combat and side mission, but the game in general is a drag to get through, mainly because of the main story/mission.

Great story, the size of the world felt "just right", and the side quests are very good and worth pursuing as well. The bat mobile is a love hate relationship within this game... sometimes it's fun to zip around the town and smash through everything, or switch to tank mode and blow up some stuff... even the bat mobile puzzles aren't bad.

The bat mobile is a love hate relationship within this game... sometimes it's fun to zip around the town and smash through everything, or switch to tank mode and blow up some stuff... even the bat mobile puzzles aren't bad. But, there are times where it seems too much emphasis is placed on the vehicle and you want to be running around on foot more... resulting in a -1 for this.

The combat isn't very good. It entertains the button smashing era of the past... similar to playing Eddie in Tekken, if you know what i mean. Combat isn't hard and it becomes a bit tedious to just knockout everyone, especially towards the end of the game where it is like 1 vs 30... and your are just jumping around, rolling, counter attacking.. endlessly.

All in all though this game has a great story, amazing graphics, and is ultimately a fun ride. Far from a 10/10 masterpiece as claimed by others.

I purchased the game on an Xbox sale for $20, and very happy I got this at a discount and do not feel like in 2020 this game is worth full price.

    Wait for the sale.

DLC wise, most were short as they were around at least 15mins, although the Batgirl dlc was more lengthy and expansive compared to the others. Batman: Arkham Knight is the best looking game in the series so far, and includes a lot of cool stuff for fans of Batman. But at the same time it’s starting to feel like Rocksteady is almost too comfortable. It lacks new content, except the pretty bad designed Batmobile parts.
