Assuming that you can get past the rather dated graphics, there's really nothing wrong with Baldur's Gate, even two decades after it's original release. The problem with the port to console is simply that the game mechanics favor PC play. I'll credit the developers with creative ways of controlling your party and individual party members, but in the end this game is made to be played onAssuming that you can get past the rather dated graphics, there's really nothing wrong with Baldur's Gate, even two decades after it's original release. You need to be able to easily point, click and pause and it just feels clunky with a controller. Save your money and look for this title on Steam. Expand

This is a review of the PS4 Enhanced Edition, not the game in it's original state.

I have wanted to play this game for years, since I played FO2 on PC when I bought it new 1998. I finally picked it up on PS4 and I've got to say I'm pretty ambivalent about it. We knew it wasn't a remake, but they really should've given it a polish and a coat of paint, but the thing is the graphics

We knew it wasn't a remake, but they really should've given it a polish and a coat of paint, but the thing is the graphics aren't the issue.

The UI and the controls are horrible! just in the tutorial, when it is TEACHING you the game, learning a spell, memorising it, resting, writing the spell, casting. Its just so convoluted just so unnecessarily complicated and complex.

With the Original Sin games, Pillars, Wasteland, all isometric CRPGs developed in the past decade you can really, really tell how dated BG is. Its the quality of life changes these new games have that are missing from BG which really makes you question why you would bother with BG 1 and 2.

    That's what I asked myself.

I'm not disputing the importance and the history or the heritage of Baldur's Gate, but as it stands in 2022 there is no reason to tolerate the experience on the PS4 when there are other, more modern 80+ hour RPGs on the market.

I feel guilty for not giving BG the chance it's pedigree deserves, I still may give it go one day, but not anytime soon.

Going through Baldur's Gate for the first time is a reminder of what makes a classic RPG -- It’s hard to miss the ways it influenced the genre two decades years ago and how its impact can still be seen in games today, but as a modern experience, it does require a new player to meet in the middle a bit in terms of quality-of-life and the slightly-dated presentation. Despite that, this is the perfect game for a fan of the genre like me to finally play and having an updated version of the game available to a wide new audience is an opportunity for new fans to see exactly why it remains so highly regarded to this day.
