Baldur's gate I and II when released on PS2/Xbox in the late '90's/early 2000's were great for a number of reasons. First, it maintained the feel of the D&D games from yester-year with its characters, monsters, adventure platforms, and story lines. The 2nd one added the awesome layers of customizable weapons and individual character story lines with added content. The Heroes game on Xbox also fit this type of gameplay . . but what made them all superb was they were simple to control button-mashers. Compared to those games for simple game-play, this re-release on PS4 SUCKS. I wanna kick-ass, develop a character, and go on cool adventures. Not pause every 12 seconds to dictate through some stupid interface what the party is gonna do. BOO! My expectation of this game was Baldur's Gate stories, characters, weapons, with bigger and better graphics and enhanced content. Think PS3 Ratchet and Clank Future, Tools of Destruction. That was exactly how to take an RP series from good to great. This went from great to garbage. Expand

BG was one of the best PC games from the 90s. Months ago I got it for PS4. The game is still fun, but it's so buggy it makes it less fun. In BG2, there's an annoying bug where after the first cutscene that involves Neera, you can't even leave Bridge District "unless" you go out the area at a specific area and go to a specific area. In both BG and BGII, the game always crashes randomly. ItBG was one of the best PC games from the 90s. Months ago I got it for PS4. The game is still fun, but it's so buggy it makes it less fun. In both BG and BGII, the game always crashes randomly. It happens about 99% of the time while you're either leaving or entering another area or fighting, and about 1% just out of the blue. I've had it twice where it actually deleted my save files. The first time it happened I lost my main save and thankfully I managed to salvage it with an autosave. The other time, only a couple days prior to this review, I've lost "both" my autosave "and" my main save...I lost probably more than two hours of gameplay.
I find it ironic that this game crashes 99% more than all other games I have. The frequency of these crashes just does not make the game fun, especially if it delete your save files. The game crashes several times almost on a daily basis.

Going through Baldur's Gate for the first time is a reminder of what makes a classic RPG -- It’s hard to miss the ways it influenced the genre two decades years ago and how its impact can still be seen in games today, but as a modern experience, it does require a new player to meet in the middle a bit in terms of quality-of-life and the slightly-dated presentation. Despite that, this is the perfect game for a fan of the genre like me to finally play and having an updated version of the game available to a wide new audience is an opportunity for new fans to see exactly why it remains so highly regarded to this day.
