Going through Baldur's Gate for the first time is a reminder of what makes a classic RPG -- It’s hard to miss the ways it influenced the genre two decades years ago and how its impact can still be seen in games today, but as a modern experience, it does require a new player to meet in the middle a bit in terms of quality-of-life and the slightly-dated presentation. Despite that, this is the perfect game for a fan of the genre like me to finally play and having an updated version of the game available to a wide new audience is an opportunity for new fans to see exactly why it remains so highly regarded to this day.

It is a classic remake that is directed to older type gamers like me. I don't know many nowadays young players that would get through isometric graphics and the amount of text you can expect of BG series.
It's a very solid work, with awesome storyline, some great characters (and some crappy ones), nicely implemented D&D rules. Everything fits perfectly.
Unfortunately there are some problems with FPS on PS4 console during bigger battles (couple of area of effect spells and the games starts stuttering). So the performance could be better, much better. Also choosing your action from the characters menu can be frustrating as you have to use your d-pad to choose the icon each time (lots of clicking). And personally I hate putting "Pause", which is crucial for this game, under tiny "Options" button.
All in all.... I love it, but it's only for die hard fans.

The problem with the port to console is simply that the game mechanics favor PC play. I'll credit the developers with creative ways of controlling your party and individual party members, but in the end this game is made to be played on a PC. You need to be able to easily point, click and pause and it just feels clunky with a controller. Save your money and look for this title on Steam. Expand

This is a review of the PS4 Enhanced Edition, not the game in it's original state.

I have wanted to play this game for years, since I played FO2 on PC when I bought it new 1998.
I finally picked it up on PS4 and I've got to say I'm pretty ambivalent about it.

We knew it wasn't a remake, but they really should've given it a polish and a coat of paint, but the thing is the graphics aren't the issue.

The UI and the controls are horrible! just in the tutorial, when it is TEACHING you the game, learning a spell, memorising it, resting, writing the spell, casting. Its just so convoluted just so unnecessarily complicated and complex.

With the Original Sin games, Pillars, Wasteland, all isometric CRPGs developed in the past decade you can really, really tell how dated BG is. Its the quality of life changes these new games have that are missing from BG which really makes you question why you would bother with BG 1 and 2.

    That's what I asked myself.

I'm not disputing the importance and the history or the heritage of Baldur's Gate, but as it stands in 2022 there is no reason to tolerate the experience on the PS4 when there are other, more modern 80+ hour RPGs on the market.

I feel guilty for not giving BG the chance it's pedigree deserves, I still may give it go one day, but not anytime soon.

Months ago I got it for PS4. The game is still fun, but it's so buggy it makes it less fun. In BG2, there's an annoying bug where after the first cutscene that involves Neera, you can't even leave Bridge District "unless" you go out the area at a specific area and go to a specific area. In both BG and BGII, the game always crashes randomly. It happens about 99% of the time while you're either leaving or entering another area or fighting, and about 1% just out of the blue. I've had it twice where it actually deleted my save files. The first time it happened I lost my main save and thankfully I managed to salvage it with an autosave. The other time, only a couple days prior to this review, I've lost "both" my autosave "and" my main save...I lost probably more than two hours of gameplay.
I find it ironic that this game crashes 99% more than all other games I have. The frequency of these crashes just does not make the game fun, especially if it delete your save files. The game crashes several times almost on a daily basis.

First, it maintained the feel of the D&D games from yester-year with its characters, monsters, adventure platforms, and story lines. The 2nd one added the awesome layers of customizable weapons and individual character story lines with added content. The Heroes game on Xbox also fit this type of gameplay . . but what made them all superb was they were simple to control button-mashers. Compared to those games for simple game-play, this re-release on PS4 SUCKS. I wanna kick-ass, develop a character, and go on cool adventures. Not pause every 12 seconds to dictate through some stupid interface what the party is gonna do. BOO! My expectation of this game was Baldur's Gate stories, characters, weapons, with bigger and better graphics and enhanced content. Think PS3 Ratchet and Clank Future, Tools of Destruction. That was exactly how to take an RP series from good to great. This went from great to garbage. Expand
