This is the most graphically gorgeous AC game I've ever played. I'm pretty much in awe. I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to play this freaking amazing, amazing game.

It could be the best Assassin's Creed game but unfortunately they messed it up. Lots of bugs, way too long loading screens, poor framerate, cheesy plot without any twists. I just do not know how they managed to create this first ''next-gen'' game, which has huge drops in framerate and these freaking long loading screens... Unity is only above average.

It could be better, but no, it's a bad story and a deception for the entire saga. Next gen starts here? I don't think so.

A flawless story with a couple of messy bugs and glitches, the combat system isn't working properly. 2014 was a bad year for games that should've been delayed until 2015 or beyond and they payed the price. I thought I was going to buy this game, but everything is just a complete waste. Assassin's Creed: Unity should've would've could've been cool at some point, but just stick to Black Flag. Expand

The controls are horrible, they have been completely ruined since Black Flag. The Player slows down constantly when running, sometimes this is because there are people near you, sometimes because you've turned a little, sometimes for no reason. It makes escaping a real pain, and doing any timed mission a nightmare. For some reason enemies no longer known how to climb, so forget running away and climb the nearest building, they'll forget you every time.

The controls are now sticky, meaning the player grabs every surface they're near even if you're not climbing but have been shot, and it you're running past something he'll grab it, but letting go is a real challenge, sometimes you need to use circle, sometimes only a wall eject let's go, if you're a certain height (not high enough to cause fall damage) you'll never let go, again a real problem for timed missions (good luck with The Tournament mission!).

The story is terrible. Definitely the least interesting in the series. The first 5 minutes of the intro, where it gives off a strong Ezio vibe is the best part, but after 5 minutes this feeling is gone, and after that i becomes very boring.

There are four different currencies! Four! Some are fairly redundant such as helix points (you can get about 10000 of these each time you play a helix mission, so just keep replaying it 5-10 times and you've unlimited helix points, no need to buy anything with real cash, despite Ubisoft always nagging you to do so).

This game is so needlessly over complicated. Enemies now suspect you and only you by default, even in crowds. If you so much as see an enemy in the distance they're already coming towards you or calling for you. The combat system changes have completely made combat a pain in the ass. Enemies can now kill you in one hit. If you so much as stand 10 meters near an enemy or walk past one you will be killed. If you hide in a crowd or hiding place, you will be found. This is in my opinion a ploy to make you buy clothes to build up your stealth and health. But I didn't even know clothes had any value other than appearance, this was never told to me during the game. The only way to play this game without rage quitting is to loot every chest as possible, to buy equipment that increases your stealth and health.

Your ammo will always be extremely limited no matter far in the game you progress, you need to buy clothes such as gloves to increase ammo. Do so asap, this isn't explained to you at all.

Sync points! frustrating, need them to be able to lockpick for loot, but cant earn them without lockpicking within co-op missions. If you play this and can't play it co-op then good luck playing it in private as the timers of the missions and the difficulties don't reduce, so you have to do the job of 4 people by yourself. For the most part this isn't a problem but there's about 3-4 missions that really really suck trying to do everything by yourself.

Can't pick up and hide bodies anymore, can't pick up enemies weapons anymore. The story is boring, all side quests are boring: "solve random mysteries", "find random documents, steal random things, tail random people" extremely dull. In fact the whole french revolution angle was extremely poorly done and not interesting, nor really involving the revolution much. The story maybe mentions the revolution 3 times briefly. It doesnt even bother with french accents, half the people sound English, the other half american. The whole premise of French Revolution does't actually amount to anything.

There is no real character arc for the main characters. There is no satisfying ending to the arcs or plot. Honestly the entire main game is poor at best. Which is a shame as france is a beautiful place to play and honestly you have more fun exploring and searching for things than doing the story missions.
Actually the Dead Kings DLC is 100x more interesting and exciting than the main game. The main game has nothing to do with Abstergo, Sages, the First Civilization, nothing to further the plot of the Templars or Assassins, nothing regarding Eden. Whereas the Dead Kings DLC does have some this, plus it resolves in a more interesting ending by far.

This entire game is skipable. But if you do buy it in a sale, don't bother trying to 100% it as there's no real reward, just loot enough chests and earn enough money to buy good clothes for health, earn sync points early in the game to upgrade skills, and speed through the so called plot, then enjoy Dead Kings DLC.

An addition by subtraction was that it wasn't extended by tedious and pointless modern day sequences like AC4 was, so that's a plus for me

What annoyed me however was the removal of competitive multiplayer in favor of co-op missions that i never bothered to play. For a game that had like 20 minutes of credits worth of people working on it why couldn't they have just reused the modes from previous games but with new maps? Surely they could have spared a few dozen people to do this.

Overall an enjoyable game and one I enjoyed more than AC4 (boats were fun for the first 2 hours, not the next 10) and one i'd recommend to AC fans.

While offering a lot of content, those elements start to feel more and more generic towards the end, particularly due to the mediocre story that has a hard time to combine the different missions into a coherent plot that makes the player feel invested in the events.

Fans of the series will still appreciate the game for giving them more of the same, however, it has become clear by now, that a creative break may be in order to bring the series back to its former level.

Unity is a good game that deserves mixed reviews. Most of the people giving this game a 10 decided they were going to like it before playing it, and those giving it a 0 are focused on one or two negative aspects or upset that the game isn’t exactly what they wanted it to be.

Beginning with the negative, let’s look at connectivity issues. The game was plagued with sync issues. This is to be expected (not an excuse) when trying to sync a game, Uplay, AC Initiates, and a companion app all at once. This could have benefited from more testing. However, none of this impacts the bulk of the experience. Running the companion on an ultrabook is a great second screen option for the map alone. There are still issues with chests tied to the app and Initiates properly syncing, but again, this is not a deal breaker by any means.

To be clear, the inclusion of microtransactions to acquire helix credits, which can be used to purchase or upgrade gear, is an obvious cash grab. However, these microtransactions are in NO WAY required to get everything out of the game. Everything you can do with helix credits can be done with normal in-game currency; credits just allow players to save time. And unlike many other games, the normal costs of these items are not so absurdly high that you have to grind for days to get them without buying credits.

Now for the technical issues. Based on the experience of thousands of players, the game certainly needs better optimization, regardless of system. That said, I experienced few issues on PS4. I experienced stuttering and framerate issues only a handful of times. Pop-ins happen but aren’t that noticeable unless you’re looking for them, and patches are making improvements. Only had one significant glitch thus far, and didn’t prevent progress.

The biggest issues with this game that really warrant giving it a lower score, are the story and characters. The overall plot is weak at best, the main character (Arno) is forgettable – along with just about all the others; there just isn’t much of a story being told at all. That said, the side missions are good and well presented, and they provide a good sense of the setting. If only the main plot wasn’t so terribly lackluster.

Now for the good. There is a lot that Unity improves on over past AC games. The parkour (climbing) system has significantly improved. While getting Arno to go where you want still doesn’t always happen, it’s not as frequent and the animations are good. The addition of downward freerun is a step forward for the series. When needing to climb down in a hurry, you no longer have to choose between blindly leaping off a building and slowly dropping from each and every ledge. Simply hold down two buttons and run towards the edge of the building to see Arno skillfully climb down.

The frustrating follow & listen missions from past games have been overhauled. You no longer have to stay so close to the target and mission areas are not packed to the brim with guards. It feels like much less of “which path do the devs think I should take” and more of “I’m a skilled assassin stalking my prey”.

In general, all of the missions are much more open-ended. There are lots of ways to accomplish the objective & while there are still preferred ways of doing things in a mission, they are now optional objectives instead of mandatory steps along the way. More than any other game in the series, Unity allows you to be the kind of assassin you want. The murder mysteries, while not really challenging, are a nice change of pace and include good snippets of story. The crowd missions are satisfying and appear with just the right frequency.

The graphics are impressive. Though not as high quality as Black Flag, this is to be expected given the complexity of the environment. The buildings are meticulously detailed, and the crowds are both large and dynamic. The city feels alive.

Gear variety is better than previous games, letting you choose the equipment that best suits your playstyle. This is echoed in the skill system, which allows you to prioritize which skills you want to unlock, rather than tying you to a preset sequence of progression. Combat is smooth and enjoyable. Arno feels powerful without making things too easy. Line of sight works the way it should, and the AI is good in terms of NPCs looking for you but not being supernatural about knowing your location.

In summary, Unity’s gameplay is solid, with lots of improvements that should be included in future AC games. The setting is superbly realized. Many frustrations seen in past games are reduced. Missions are enjoyable, open-ended, and varied. At the same time, any story or characters that would make this a noteworthy addition to the AC saga are completely absent. And while many of the technical issues are being resolved or relatively minor, their abundance at launch created a negative reaction from which this game will probably never recover.

Keeping it short, if you have played any AC games before and loved combat and stealth, this game is definitely what you want in AC. The story isn't short, and you will find yourself grinding getting F money and Creed Points on the side for customization.

Story itself would have been way more immersive if it wasn't for the Abstergo and Animus storyline on the side, which thankfully doesn't peak into gameplay constantly like other AC games do.

Combat is really fun, and all classes of weapons are all unique and fun to use. Stealth is easy to understand, and fun most of the time.

Assassinations in the story are fun to play, giving you the option of killing everyone in sight or playing stealthy and finding your target first.

What really hurts this game on both PS4 and Xbox One is that the frame rate is constantly dipping in areas of Paris which are very populated, and on certain occasions coming from nowhere.

While I constantly try and tell people that they shouldn't expect much from the annual formula that is Assassins Creed, this time around, for the first time since Assassins Creed 2, I got 100% on the game and finished the free Dead Kings expansion on the side, which was also fun.

I give Assassins Creed: Unity an 8.9/10

The combat would have been a welcome change if the camera weren't so down-right evil and the controls were more responsive but, as it stands, it will not be a rare occurrence for the player to be shot to death by trigger happy enemies that are off screen. The stealth system is half-baked at best - the "cover" system shares the same sticky, unresponsiveness that crops up in the other places of the game. There is no rhyme or reason to when an enemy can see you or not - I've experienced being spotted by an enemy whilst I was crouching behind cover meters away, I've experienced walking up to enemies and them not batting an eye. The changes with the freerunning take some initial getting used to, but even then they don't noticeably improve on the issues familiar to the series.

The regular mainstays of the series are still here. Big, open world to run around and do parkour feats in; lots of collectibles to find; lots of side-quests; lots of stabbing dudes. The graphics are okay but nothing spectacular, even considering the number of characters that can be on the screen. It's all enough to get caught up in the game for a few dozen hours if you want to take care of everything the game has to offer.

There are some major technical issue with the game on PS4 and they are the primary reason for the lowered score. The framerate is locked at 30 fps, which doesn't bother me. What does bother me, however, is how ridiculously unstable it is. Anything from turning the camera around to running through a crowd to climbing a building can cause noticeable frame drops. There are also a number of restart-causing bugs that happen regularly. In my time with Unity I've experienced not being able to speak to key NPCs, getting stuck in walls while climbing up buildings, and even falling through the Earth into nothingness. Yes. I've randomly glitched through the ground whilst playing. The problems are present enough that they make the game feel half-baked and rushed. If I were head of Ubisoft QA, I'd probably be committing seppuku because I honestly don't understand how a game can ship out like this.

That's the major of it. The story is forgettable and skippable, which you'll probably do after the first hour. Ubisoft has abandoned most of the outter-framework story previous games has presented, but oh well.

Unity can still be a wholly enjoyable enjoyable experience, especially if you're an established fan of the series. The tough part is getting past all of the technical issues that refuse to go away.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Following up Black Flag, easily the best game in the Assassin's Creed series, was always going to be a tall order, but Ubisoft seem to have despaired of rising to the challenge, releasing the worst game in the series since its inception with the interesting but painfully repetitive Assassin's Creed. The attempt to diversify free-running to allow one to move down as easily as up is a nice idea, but clumsily executed. You never know if Arno is going to jump to the next roof, make a leap of faith, scale the side of the building he's on, plunge to his death, or simply stumble to a standstill.

Co-op failed more times than I care to note, which is all the more disappointing because many of the stories behind the co-op missions were more interesting than the predictable main plot. Arno is a forgettable Ezio-light, everyone in revolutionary France is British, and the fact that the Assassin Brotherhood has descended into the same staid, stifling bureaucracy as the Templar Order is basically just glossed over. Of much more importance is the fact that Arno. Is. Angry. He's Ezio light in far too many ways, all of them less interesting than Ezio himself.

Easily the most disappointing aspect of their failure is the fact that Unity is, in a word, broken. Many times I've been warned about buggy games and had little to no problems with them upon playing. The only exception here was Batman: Arkham Origins, a thoroughly flawed game of huge potential, but one which found its feet after a few patches and now sits proudly next to its predecessors. This may well be the case with AC's first real stab at the next-gen platforms, but right now, I couldn't be moved to care. Unity is a hot mess descended from a pedigree I've come to expect much more from.

In the opening chapter alone I was hit with no fewer than three massive bugs which forced me to reset my console. Countless times I took aim a soldier from cover, and Arno jumped out when I pulled the trigger, but never actually fired. Cue me getting spotted and finding myself in a desperate fight with every guard in the area.

The loss of the naval warfare is keenly felt, with the game suffering from a stifling lack of variety, and as one of the apparently very small group of people who had always enjoyed the modern day story as much as the historical, I was also disappointed with how little progress was made on that front. My nameless, faceless character (no doubt deliberately nameless and faceless to indicate that we are all now Abstergo's mind slaves or on the verge of becoming such), never sits up or moves about, but is merely fed remote instructions from Rebecah(sp?) and Shawn, who refer to themselves only as Bishop and Deacon. The discovery of the abundance of Precursor DNA among the Sages has led to a desperate race. Abstergo want to harness this DNA as they believe doing so will lead to the Rosetta Stone of understanding the ancient race, and thus, their technology. The Assassins, naturally, want to stop them. Unfortunately, this desperation doesn't come across very well in a couple of scattered video sequences where nobody actually does anything, and the host migration sequences, while interesting breaks from the main story, are over too quick, and again, don't convey much urgency.

I've returned my copy; the first time I've ever brought back an Assassin's Creed game. The rest of the series still sits on my shelves, and there's a good chance I'll play them all again. If the main problem of awful mechanics is fixed, Unity could actually wind up being a very good game, though it will never approach the rip-roaring heights of Black Flag. And when it hits the bargain bins, I might ask around to see if the multiple patches made a difference, as those for Arkham Origins did. If so, I'll thumb my nose at Ubisoft in my own special way, and buy it preowned so they don't see a penny. As for future releases, I've sworn never to buy a Ubisoft game upon release again.

It's been completely stripped down from past entries, all of the useful parts removed. You can no longer take a human shield to dodge bullets. You end up getting shot 90% of the time. The animations during combat have that glitchy stab the air feel, like you miss your intended target and he falls down dead. LAME! The combat frustrates me to no end, and I've played every AC from the beginning. This is BY FAR the worst combat mechanics in the series.

Aside from the combat a lot has improved. Parkour in this entry is awesome and I find myself running along rooftops just for the sheer joy of it. LOVE the customization. The city is an amazing thing to see. They definitely packed Paris with a ton of $hit to do. Most of the technical problems in the game stem from Ubisoft jampacking the city with NPC's. TOTALLY unnecessary. And pretty annoying as well. It makes it almost impossible to run through the streets at times. What was the point? It looks more packed than modern day New York...

All in all I'm having fun with this game but not without A LOT of frustration. Ubisoft has brought the game down a notch since black flag. The next game in the series had better make major changes. I mean near flawless to redeem this mess.

It's a fun sandbox that I enjoyed much more than Watch Dogs. I reccomend playing the campaign through first (try it in French with English subtitles for extra immersion). Then find out which types of side quests you like- I enjoyed the helix games and renovations. Customization is great but you're limited to one character, Arno, who isn't bad. The game is a good 20 hours worth of jumping and sneaking fun. The glitchiness is much less (at least for me) than what others have complained about. The huge amount of NPCs and dynamic action is actually a pretty incredible accomplishment. Also I found the AI to be much better and more apt to the gameplay than others. Coop is not bad, actually works well, but wasn't really my bag. So ultimately, good game. Don't believe the hate or the hype. After 25 hours, it'll get too repetitive and time to move in. Expand

And these **** havve now forced metacritic to only allow reveiwers to give it a positive iteger. i would give this a 0 if i could!!! Expand

Dreadful, boring rinse and repeat. I love this series of games but I must say this is the worst of the lot. Sure it looks pretty now the bugs have been sorted out but that's it. Franchise fatigue has most definitely set in, time to leave assassin's creed alone now and concentrate on new ip's like watch dogs.

The most satisfying part with this game was today, when I traded it in at a local videogame store to at least get some of my money back.
It's not a catastrophy, it's just frustratingly mediocre, I and I say it with the deepest regret. Maybe next time, Ubisoft? Hm? Maybe?!

So far I have enjoyed all the AC games but this was pretty rough on my stomach after dropping 60 bucks on it. Soon as I got the disc in I was overloaded with extra content to buy ... Also what revolution? There was more revolting in Blackflag Freedom Cry. Now were getting ADS for a world premiere sneak peak at the new AC game? So all the (unearned) money made off this game goes into hype advertising and not the game. Are you smellin what im cookin here? Expand

The French Revolution was a setting that many fans wanted and for good reason. Sadly, the potential get's squandered away completely, because for the first time in Assassin's Creed, the protagonist never get's to be a part of history himself, it merely serves as a background setting for the largely uninteresting “conflict” between “Ezio" and the templar's. It's not like it was in AC and AC3, where Altaïr was with King Richard on or when Connor was directly involved in the Boston Tea Party and when they signed the Decloration of Independence, he was there himself. They helped shape history, unlike Arno who doesn't have the slightest interest in the revolution. We never really get to interact with some of the most famous historical figures either, like Napoleon Bonaparte, Theroígne Mericourt and Marie Antoniette. Napoleon only makes a brief cameo in the story line and a Paris story, Theroígne only appears during a few Paris stories and some co-op misions and Marie Antoniette ONLY appears in a cutscene for one of those co-ops. We NEVER get to interact directly with her at all.

Every single character is very forgettable and very one dimensional. It is painfully obvious that they tried to cater to Ezio fans, by creating his french clone. Everything from his pony-tail, his clothes (at first and in the prison) to his behaviour, where he tries to be charismatic and witty in every situation, but instead of being those things, he becomes the exact opposite. Like a true try-hard. While I won’t exactly say I hate him, I very much dislike him, especially as a protagonist. He’s the least skilled and least likable Assassin ever. Even Elise who is otherwise somewhat of a hot chick, only cares about revenge for her father and uses Arno as her lapdog (man that guy is whipped). All of the villain’s and ESPECIALLY - what is supposed to be - the main baddie, completely fail to make us - the gamers - root against them. They simply do not receive enough screen time to make us know who they are, what they stand for, their motivations/goals and simply care for them at all.

The main story is perhaps my biggest gripe with this entry. It takes heavy inspiration from AC2’s revenge theme, which is already a pretty standard plot in almost every action movie ever. It fails to keep me engaged in it like in previous entries. Even though Black Flag is my least favorite (besides this one), mainly because of it’s uninteresting story - both past and modern day - at least it wasn’t short. If I hadn’t done multiple side quests and co-op missions between the sequences I could’ve been done in less than 10 hours. All the missions get incredibly repetitive after just the 3rd sequence, You KNOW that every sequence will culminate in a pointless assassination of a random templar. All the “twists” like Arno’s dad(s) getting killed and Elise dying was really predictable. The modern day part isn’t even there. Again, you’re a random guy in 1st person, that’s supposed to be “you”, instead this time you never even get to walk around. You briefly interact with a chick assassin named Bishop in some sequences but that’s about it. The MD part is arguably the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the franchise. Many fans such as myself, keep coming back for more, solely because of the MD conflict between the Assassin’s and Templar’s, yet they’ve removed it completely this time, making this a history sim when it shouldn’t be at all. Ubi’s biggest mistake was killing off Desmond, who I loved immensely. IMO they should just bring him back because this whole 1st person, silent and RANDOM protagonist BS is not working out AT ALL! It seems to me that Ubi is afraid to move forward with the core plot, because then they would likely have to end it in a few years and that’s probably why they started with this pointless “you’re the protagonist” $hit, meaning a huge source of their revenue is removed. So sadly, they milk the hell out of this and completely screw up the lore of this once beloved franchise.

The few positive things: I actually kinda liked the murder mysteries. I thought they were fun for a little diversity and I like using my brain when it’s something that doesn’t completely fall out of perspective (like the Enigma mysteries where you have to KNOW the entire map like the back of your hand). And the world is beautifully realized, no doubt about that. The huge crowds, the graphics are very good and the architecture is magnificent. Truly makes it feel like a next-gen game. Sadly, that’s all the positive there is to say about this. I simply can’t believe that they used 3 years to develop this and yet it is so unpolished. So much so that it should just have been cancelled completely instead. I should also warn that the controls are very bad, there are still numerous game breaking bugs and the frame-rate issue which causes your PS4 to overheat during menu sequences still exist. Overall, just don't buy this game unless you're a hardcore AC fan like myself.

Absolute crap! They removed the naval features, which is one of the best parts of the game, as well as botching the coop mode. it was even more disappointing than watchdogs, and that BIG

This whole franchise is just so stale. Chunring out the same game year after year is the height of lazyness.
AC4 was a breath of fresh air. Yes it had the same tired and boring missions and overall poor storyline, but i brought a new piece of gameplay with it. Unity is a massive step backwards in all apsects. Avoid.

assassins creed unity is a beautiful game in a giant beautifully recreated Paris although the story and the gameplay isn't top notch.the premise and the graphics are. i would have given this game a better review but it lags like hell on consoles so i can only recommend it for someone who owns a beefy PC

An excellent and huge game. The positives are emphasized by detailed world that seems more alive now than ever before.

Unity is not a bad game, but it certainly doesn’t feel like it advances the series very much, especially for the first title in the series to be a fully next-gen game.
