Wished it actually focused on unity among assassins and teamwork and not multiplayer. Story is fine and voice acting is actually realy good. Arno is a relatable and fun character. World exploration does not feel rewarding.

    Pros
    - the parkour animations are second to none in the series
    - the ability to hold and use two tools at the same time makes for some smooth feeling gameplay - Paris is beautifully realized with surprising crowd density that makes the city feel lived in - if you can get an online co-op going, it can be very satisfying to mow through missions with actual people instead of npcs Cons

    Cons
    - the parkour mechanics feel terrible, leading to the character doing something unintended more often than not
    - the story feels extremely bland, boring and short, compared to any other game in the series
    - the weird gear score level system this game has going on makes it feel weirdly unbalanced

Playing Unity in 2023 feels like playing a game from another century. It looks surprisingly good with all of its architecture and crowds yet it feels like the most vapid version of the old AC games.

For starters, the parkour is beautifully animated. It was in fact a youtube video of somebody performing a series of nice looking vaults and jumps that brought me to replay this game. And my god I should have stayed a viewer rather than a player.

Arno feels like you are controlling a character that was made to first move with the original Resident Evil tank controls, which was then converted onto a joystick. The only part of this system that works reliably is the descend down option.

Everything else feels like it is pulling from a deck of ten cards, where only one of those cards is the action you intended, while the rest are just the most awful alternatives that will completely mess up whatever you were trying to do. Vault over a fence you vaulted over ten times before? How about I hop up on it and refuse to leave it. How about climbing up? Nope gets stuck for ten seconds before the character finally gets up even though it makes it seem impossible. Did you miss a ladder? Oh god have mercy on your soul, cause you are gonna miss it three more times as Arno will press his shoulder into it but otherwise ignore its existence.

But still, this game sometimes works as you intended it and those are the moments that feel wonderful. Running through a place, dropping smoke bombs, disabling guards with Phantom Blade quickshots before making a beautiful looking escape. They are rare, but when those moments go off without a hitch it feels fantastic.

What does not help is the story. My god if this aint one of the most generic plots in this series I don't know what is? It also feels so predictably boring it ain't even funny. Kill guy, learn about another guy. So you kill that guy to learn about another guy and then you kill that guy. The cherry on top is the anemic and frankly pathetic modern day story that has no consequence, no emotional payoff, no…. nothing.

Unity is not a complete travesty of a game. It is, however, painfully average. I was lucky to not play it during the release, so thankfully I have avoided all the bugs. Yet the movement mechanics feel like they remain bugged to this day. What a meh experience.

For someone who started with Assassin's Creed Odyssey purchased for full retail prices at Target at the onset of Covid-19 and as someone who recently purchased Assassin's Creed Origins for use on the Luna network, I am not an enemy of the franchise. I am sitting in front of a $550 Playstation V and it not only does not want to honor the disk (used) but it also does not want to honor the three add-ons that I purchased.

I didn't expect to be used yet again so a bunch of people can show me how much better they are at playing the game on Twitch and Playstation V. In order to be denied downloading the game, I was expected to delete five games from my 666 gigabyte harddrive on the $550 Playstation V.

After the patches, it was an okay game. Not good, not bad. Honestly the only good thing about this is the setting (could say this about every AC game I played, honestly), it fits the series really well and if you like history like me, you'll enjoy that part, but when it gets old, there is nothing here.

But side content is trash, story is very bad, it looks like they didnt even bother with it. Its just there because it needs to have something. Multiplayer is fine.

A game with an exciting story, okay characters but, a ton of technical difficulties and clunky gameplay mechanics. I couldn't go one second in this game without losing frames or experiencing a glitch such as an NPC just randomly popping in/disappearing (though some were quite funny) but, props to Ubisoft for significantly improving performance from the disastrous launch. Gameplay is quite similar. ARNO WOULD NEVER GO WHERE I WANTED HIM TO GO!!! It was as if he had a mind of his own and he truly hated me and wanted me to have the worst parkour experience in the whole series. Oh, and don't get me started on the cover system. It is truly broken and excuse my french.............. a pure piece of **** Majority of the time I got caught during stealth cause of this poorly executed mechanic which really deterred the stealth experience and led me to constantly restart checkpoints so that I could have a full stealth run on each mission. Lastly with gameplay, I have to talk about combat. I like and understand the premise where you should be a sneaky assassin and combat should be a last resort but, I thought at times it could get too overwhelming. This is especially prevalent in large groups making it nearly impossible to kill all of them and to feel like the badass one-man army like in the previous games. *Breath*
Now let's get to what I liked which was the story. I am a sucker for emotional, impactful, and action-packed revenge stories and this game truly delivered. The synopsis is after the death of Arno's father, he is taken in/adopted by another individual however, this individual was assassinated by a group of people who Arno and the daughter of this individual Elise, hunt down and assassinate throughout the game. This was excellently executed with numerous set pieces, large-scale assassinations, and beautifully produced cutscenes that really made me connect with the main characters and feel impacted by what was going on on-screen. Arno as the main character is a memorable one but not my favorite as a result of his arc throughout the game. In the beginning, he is quite a charming, dangerous and witty character which I really enjoyed and appreciated. However, after the beginning, he loses all his poise and just becomes this stone-cold killer with only one quest which is the quest for vengeance. However, all scenes with Elise brought out the nature of him that I liked which is why by the end of the game, I loved his character and one I shall remember and be inspired by. The other characters on the other hand were also pretty good but I feel, were a bit underused and could've had more time under the spotlight to truly connect with them.
    *Breath*
I think that's about it. Dear reader, please remember these comments are mine alone and my experience may greatly differ from yours, and that's something I adore about games. This game was very pretty for its time, and arguably the best realised city in an AC game when it was released. I Plat this recently, so have a decent gauge on the title. Unfortunately the thing that immediately stands out in my mind: the controls.

Ab-so-lutely the worst controls in an AC game, and any platformer / open world game I've ever played in general. Actually so bad I felt myself writhing in pain at points and audibly screeching at the non-responsiveness at times, the inconsistency and unexpected jank, how there's often a delay (by which time you're already screwed), how it demands precise control at times when the control is anything but precise.

I am soo glad they fixed the controls in later AC games, such as Origins or Odyssey. There were a handful bugs in this fully patched version, but extremely rare in a game full of 'stuff' to do. Sometimes repetitive stuff, sometimes mind-numbing stuff, but there's stuff, and a lot of it. And chests, and cockade collectibles, and a lot of them. Too many of them. You have 250+ collectibles, and thank god you can open all chests. When the game originally released you needed a mobile app to open some chests. Ubisoft saw sense and fixed that at the end of 2014. Also, special mention about all the side-missions, many of which are very samey and repetitive, but some definitely stood out as decent. For example, I found co-op fun. This was probably my favourite side content outside of some of the heists missions and the Rift missions. However the Murder Mystery / Companion / Paris stories stuff? Not so much. Really grindy, and really samey.

The game also manages getting 00's of NPC on screen at a time, which caused some of the launch issues on fps. Playing it today, I have to hand it to them. The FPS did not stand out to me. The issues with this game are the controls. I pushed through as it's AC, and I hate to not 100% games if I can avoid. Will I ever touch this game again though? Heck no. This one for AC series completionists only.

The story is formulaic in parts but it has some interesting ideas and missions that were enjoyable. The multiplayer component is handled in a very meh way, seems more put there just because corporate mandate than truly creative direction, but for a couple of missions wasn't that bad. And in obvious fashion for a Ubisoft game, it has so much content, but a lot of it is repetitive or not worth the time. In conclusion, I enjoyed my time in paris, but is not one that I wanted to prolongue more than move on with the next adventure. If you like the series, give it a go at a low price. Expand

    2) The parkour controls are horribly frustrating. It's too easy to become stuck on a fence or a ledge especially when trying to go through windows.
    3) The enemy AI borders on brain dead - if you alert the enemy they bum rush your last location and then stand around like idiots before resuming their routines.
    4) There is no way to whistle / attract an enemy from a hidden location or cover.
    5) The there are virtually no horses in the game. None you can ride, none in the streets apart from one for a fast travel location. Think how ridiculous that is for the period.
    6) No moving boats either except for a few on rails. Think how ridiculous that is too.
    7) Anachronisms - the game was lauded for recreating Notre Dame cathedral but medieval spire had been dismantled at the time because it was close to toppling over. I bet much of the architecture in the game reflects later restoration efforts.
    8) Perfunctory skill tree. Not only is it annoyingly bare, it's a pain to navigate through the menu.

This game's successor Syndicate improved on a lot of these things, especially efforts to make the city come alive although it took Origins / Odyssey to get the series properly back on track.

The game is inseparably linked to micro-transactions and the E-store, meaning that if you do not pay for the best gear, you will not feel like an assassin and more like a guy bumbling around with enemies who can hear your every move and spot you from across rooftops with ease. It just goes to show that the gear with the best sneak ratings are the ones that are put behind pay walls.

Story is okay but nothing spectacular. Forgettable in the long-run.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally picked this game up to try it after reading that Ubisoft had actually done enough patches that the game was mostly playable without running into grotesque looking NPCs or falling through the Earth. The game itself is indeed playable, I finished the whole story but wow was it a lackluster experience. If you're here looking to be immersed in history like we were during every AC game prior, you're going to be severely disappointed. Arno exists during the French Revolution, yes, but he lives completely apart from it. And it's like he's completely oblivious to the fact that a revolution is even occurring. You'll hear things once and awhile, like the storming of the Bastille (you literally are jumping off the fortress when the people are about to come through), and sometimes see things; King Louis got executed (the closest you got to being near history) and you briefly meet Napoleon (probably the best part of the game albeit too short). You won't walk away from this game feeling as though you learned anything about this piece of history, you'll be lucky if you understand who the names of people that are literally just tossed at you or thrown into your codex actually represent. Indeed, half of them aren't even close to what their real-life counterpart was like.

Onto gameplay, you may not run into people with missing faces but you sure are going to get your fill of other glitches. You'll find yourself falling off many roofs that in any other game the character would have been grabbing on to stop themselves from falling, not here, the whole grab ability is nonexistent, I mean you're lucky to properly climb a building in some sort of fluid motion, good luck going down in some sort of climbing fashion. Arno cannot climb into a window fluidly, you will be climbing all around that window trying to hit the trigger when it appears. Some of the co-op challenges can be completed on your own, but most of the 5-star ones need other people to play with you, but good luck finding anyone to do those with. A particular co-op mission in which you finish your army training by having to climb and jump to collect flags, you can drop waist deep into the ground and get stuck. People actually crowded around Arno and stared, as though they were mocking the fact that I had apparently found a quicksand pit. The blood effects are sometimes horrifying. Particularly during story missions after you just killed a couple guards and go to talk to the NPC objective, Arno will turn around his whole face just soaked in dark blood, as though he's a mass murderer. It's a terrifying sight to behold. Indeed, one part was with Elise and Arno said something about their previous escapade not having as much blood, in which he once again was drenched in it.

For the story itself, once you discover that Elise is a Templar, you would think that would play a huge role in the story but it has no gravitas to the story at all. in fact, for the first quarter of the game she says you murdered her father and disappears to god knows where. And when she finally does return, she perfects the line of 'Let's split up.' Every mission the two of you split up and you're once more doing things on your own. If you couldn't figure out how to add meat to the character then why even bother having her? Speaking of having little meat to the character, how about Arno himself? He could've been a fascinating character. The whole Assassin/Templar confliction in regards to his father is murdered by a Templar and his adoptive father is a Templar murdered by a renegade Templar. He's searching for his adoptive father's murderer (which makes him oblivious to the whole French Revolution thing) but it's just like Point A to Point B and it's just shallow. And let's talk about how Arno joined the Assassins, he gets thrown in the Bastille and just happens to meet this guy who's an Assassin and knew Arno's father? And in an undefined amount of time (way too short to be any sort of competent Assassin) after training with a wooden broomstick? you're ready to give your life to the Brotherhood and taking on complicated missions. Also, stare at this wall Arno, look you've got Eagle Vision! (Eagle vision that must now recharge as well) And you know you did your story wrong when upon meeting this guy, Bellec, you instantly know he's gonna turn against you later and you're going to have to kill him. Oh, Arno also joins the Brotherhood by saying he wants revenge for his adoptive father's killer, literally says that's the only reason he's here and later on, the Council says they believe revenge is the only thing on Arno's mind. Uh duh? He straight up told you that? The best part was that Arno was basically just using the Assassin Brotherhood for his own ends.

I could write a book about how disappointing this game was. The worst part was that it could have been great but Ubisoft doesn't care about great games, they just want as much money as fast as possible with little work.

It's a perfect game to play while listening to a podcast. If you really pay attention, you'll notice that Assassin's Creed Unity has so many things for you to do, but somehow manages to feel incredibly empty.

It aims to change a lot of things from the previous AC games, but at the same time it doesn't want to do so.
The toughest game of the series, where you will be SERIOUSLY forced to play stealthily, not sure if for the clunky controls compared to the previous titles or because it is designed to be tougher, this game seem a bit more realistic compared to other AC games.
The climbing mechanics especially, are among the best looking in the series, but glitches are still present to this day and the mechanics feel outdated at best even if it's a fairly recent game.
The world is repetitive, and the multiplayer is very, very bad.

But...There are quite a few cons, I will get the petty one out of the way first was the accents, now why are French people talking with a posh English accent? The thing that makes AC games incredible are the accents sure they all speak English when they are not a lot of the times, because of the English talking target audience, but I thought that was very confusing they sounded more English than the English people in Syndicate set in London lol, the gameplay to me wasn't great, sure stealth has had an upgrade but it felt to awkward most of the time, and the biggest con...Yes BUGS there was so many bugs in that game it was frustrating, the story was interesting did feel very AC like more so than Syndicate, but the Bugs and much of the gameplay was a let down for me, but still overall enjoyable. No worries, I then decided I'd just play the game in English. Well tough luck Frenchie, all the NPCs that populate the city are voiced by the same Quebec voice actors as the French version.

I recognize this is a very regional problem that affects just a handful of people, but if they're going for historical accuracy and realism, they should go all in, rather than say 93%.

Ultimately, between actors and micro-transactions, it was hard for me to enjoy this game and I didn't finish all objectives/trophies as I normally would for a game like this one.

With Unity, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful rendition of Paris. My wife and I spend the honeymoon there and I was quite excited to see Cluny, Saint Etienne, Saint Eustache du Mont and many others in game. This was made possible due to some noticeably upgraded graphics compared to Black Flag, which was good looking itself. So, a big plus here, because we can stop pretending that graphics don’t matter and admit it is so. Else, we wouldn’t sink thousands of euros in the latest ATI’s and NVidia products. So let’s be honest here and appreciate Unity for what is has to offer in this aspect.
The story taking place in such a beautifully rendered environment is not top notch, but is not bad either. Short and with a twist. I enjoyed it, but I was left wanting for more.
As I said, the story is short, but the game has lots to offer in terms of side missions, some of them quite “nouveau” like the CSI investigation missions. There is plenty to do in the game if you are an avid achiever and like 100% game completion.
The stealth was a bit changed, with the introduction of a line of sight mechanic. You can now sneak past guards noses, if you are crouching behind a table or anything to break their LOS, giving you more freedom to finish a mission stealthily.
    The minus:
What made the AC franchise really popular was its parkour element. It is with sadness that I announce that after AC, AC2, ACB, ACR, AC3 and ACBF the long and trialed parkour system was overhauled. To the worst. For the sake of innovation. Now, the parkour was reduced to “press a button and …parkour”.
Such a thing in itself it is not a bad thing, but remember Black Flag, only before Unity, when you were high speeding on the rooftops of Havana and decided to change direction midcourse and assassinate a target of opportunity below you? It was the pinnacle of the previous five games being refined year by year (almost) to get you the bet freedom of movement/action possible. Forget it now. Your character will continue its path, oblivious to your commands to stop, jump and kill. The result of such a command would now randomly be:
    - Keep running on a predefined path.
    - Stop.
    - Stop and immediately go some random direction regardless of the direction you commanded.
    - Run to the nearest ledge and get stuck on it, in plain sight, and be noted by your target.
    - Jump to assassinate, but fell short of your target and enter combat.
    - Jump and assassinate an ally, who has just engaged your intended target.
In terms of combat, all previous AC has a similar combat system: enter combat, wait to be attacked, perform a counter attack and insta-kill your target (a bit less so in ACBF), then rinse and repeat. This has to be change to something better, to feel combat like and more engaging. The good news is that it has changed in Unity. That is all the good news. The combat was changed to this succession of events:
    - Enter combat.
    - Attack you target.
    - See your target attacking you back.
    - Press the button to parry (same as before but…different. I bet you read that in James Franco’s voice).
    - Even though you parried at the exact time as dutifully instructed by creative director Alex Amancio in his in game linked tutorials, fail to parry and get hit badly, even by the weakest adversaries.
    - Shake your head in disbelief and try to parry again, this time with more care.
    - Realize it is not your timing that fails to parry, that it is the game that doesn’t do it. Despite you doing the exact same thing each time, sometime the game acts, sometimes it doesn’t. Be lucky.
    - Keep trying to parry or dodge. Yes, dodge is an option now, but it is just as well implemented as parry. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
    - Watch your camera setting itself at an impossible angle and admire the wall that just popped in front of you, and see nothing of the combat around you.
    - As the camera resets itself on a better angle, watch your character getting shot before you could dodge (provided dodge would have worked) because you couldn’t see the enemy targeting you.
    - Get lucky and see the enemy targeting you, rush towards it, try to dodge his bullet, only to see your character climbing a nearby fence/barrel/junk pile and get stuck on it, no matter what gods or devils you invoke to get him down.
Finally, the game also features a coop multiplayer feature. Good thing, too. The bad thing? The game is 3 years old now and the player base is tiny. You won't have much opportunities to play this Coop in 2017. Get a friend or don't get any hopes for it.
    This is about it.
Thank for taking time to read this and I hope your will enjoy it, if you do decide to buy it.

For some reason enemies no longer known how to climb, so forget running away and climb the nearest building, they'll forget you every time.

The controls are now sticky, meaning the player grabs every surface they're near even if you're not climbing but have been shot, and it you're running past something he'll grab it, but letting go is a real challenge, sometimes you need to use circle, sometimes only a wall eject let's go, if you're a certain height (not high enough to cause fall damage) you'll never let go, again a real problem for timed missions (good luck with The Tournament mission!).

The story is terrible. Definitely the least interesting in the series. The first 5 minutes of the intro, where it gives off a strong Ezio vibe is the best part, but after 5 minutes this feeling is gone, and after that i becomes very boring.

There are four different currencies! Four! Some are fairly redundant such as helix points (you can get about 10000 of these each time you play a helix mission, so just keep replaying it 5-10 times and you've unlimited helix points, no need to buy anything with real cash, despite Ubisoft always nagging you to do so).

This game is so needlessly over complicated. Enemies now suspect you and only you by default, even in crowds. If you so much as see an enemy in the distance they're already coming towards you or calling for you. The combat system changes have completely made combat a pain in the ass. Enemies can now kill you in one hit. If you so much as stand 10 meters near an enemy or walk past one you will be killed. If you hide in a crowd or hiding place, you will be found. This is in my opinion a ploy to make you buy clothes to build up your stealth and health. But I didn't even know clothes had any value other than appearance, this was never told to me during the game. The only way to play this game without rage quitting is to loot every chest as possible, to buy equipment that increases your stealth and health.

Your ammo will always be extremely limited no matter far in the game you progress, you need to buy clothes such as gloves to increase ammo. Do so asap, this isn't explained to you at all.

Sync points! frustrating, need them to be able to lockpick for loot, but cant earn them without lockpicking within co-op missions. If you play this and can't play it co-op then good luck playing it in private as the timers of the missions and the difficulties don't reduce, so you have to do the job of 4 people by yourself. For the most part this isn't a problem but there's about 3-4 missions that really really suck trying to do everything by yourself.

Can't pick up and hide bodies anymore, can't pick up enemies weapons anymore. The story is boring, all side quests are boring: "solve random mysteries", "find random documents, steal random things, tail random people" extremely dull. In fact the whole french revolution angle was extremely poorly done and not interesting, nor really involving the revolution much. The story maybe mentions the revolution 3 times briefly. It doesnt even bother with french accents, half the people sound English, the other half american. The whole premise of French Revolution does't actually amount to anything.

There is no real character arc for the main characters. There is no satisfying ending to the arcs or plot. Honestly the entire main game is poor at best. Which is a shame as france is a beautiful place to play and honestly you have more fun exploring and searching for things than doing the story missions.
Actually the Dead Kings DLC is 100x more interesting and exciting than the main game. The main game has nothing to do with Abstergo, Sages, the First Civilization, nothing to further the plot of the Templars or Assassins, nothing regarding Eden. Whereas the Dead Kings DLC does have some this, plus it resolves in a more interesting ending by far.

This entire game is skipable. But if you do buy it in a sale, don't bother trying to 100% it as there's no real reward, just loot enough chests and earn enough money to buy good clothes for health, earn sync points early in the game to upgrade skills, and speed through the so called plot, then enjoy Dead Kings DLC.

Gameplay wise, Unity follows Ubisoft's -by now- standard approach applied to every single open world game: Lot's of side missions, conquerable enemy territories, and tons of collectibles spread all over the map. While offering a lot of content, those elements start to feel more and more generic towards the end, particularly due to the mediocre story that has a hard time to combine the different missions into a coherent plot that makes the player feel invested in the events.

Fans of the series will still appreciate the game for giving them more of the same, however, it has become clear by now, that a creative break may be in order to bring the series back to its former level.

For being a game about assassins, the Assassin's Creed franchise never had a proper stealth system, until now. It's very fleshed out and very fun. The missions themselves are pretty fun, and the main target assassinations are the most fun to be had in the entire franchise. The investigation of who commited various murders around the city side quests are actualy very fun, and they have an engaging enough story to hook you on finding out who did it. The costumization of Arno has a lot of depth, Various guns, swords and clothing can be put on him. The coop is really fun, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense, story-wise and I'm unsure of why it has not been implemented on the recent installment.
    Bad Points:
The game runs terribly, a lot of performance issues and incredible amount of bugs and glitches even with all of its patches. Assassin's Creed III had been a low point in the series, performance-wise, but this is even worse. The main character is terribly uninteresting (Arno) though Elise is the bright spot for sure. Also his entire story is just a mess, with no one knowing why they are even doing what they are doing, and the romance feels completely out of place. The present story aswell is just unnecesary. Assassin's Creed III lest a Juno cliffhanger in the end, but neither Black Flag or Unity cared to move that story forward, making us wonder if that should've ever been put in the story in the first place. Although the game is packed full of content, most of it is just filler. Lots of treasures and feathers mostly (which, yes, were heavily present in previous installments) but this one feels like it puts twice the filler than ever before, just to make its city look dense.
    Woth Adressing:
Multiplayer doesn't comeback for some odd reason, being replaced by coop (which admitedly is pretty fun), even though it was one of the most unique and fun multiplayers around. There is no horse, and makes exploration slower, though its probably for the best considering it had had clunky controlls in the past (Brotherhood, I'm talking to you).
    Final Score:
Assassin's Creed Unity is a very mixed bag. It gets a lot of deserved and undeserved criticism. This is game, like Assassin's Creed III, tries to mix up the formula and make innovations such as a whole new stealth system, open assassinations and new types of side activities. However, this game was clearly rushed, and suffers from it story-wise, gameplay-wise and performance-wise. After ditching its present day story and making an uninteresting one in revolutionary Paris, I think it's time for this series to say goodbye.

First off, Ubisoft patched glaring bugs like missing skin and also removed the requirement to check into Uplay to access all of the game's content. These goodwill moves make the game much more playable. Secondly, the UI and in-game map are cluttered with too many in-game collectibles and co-op missions. Coming in a year and a half later, I feel safe in ignoring all of these. I am not going to "platinum" this game, so the collectibles don't matter. No one else plays this game, so co-op doesn't matter. This far from the game's launch, I am totally focused on the main quest (and tackling thieves on the street).

The game is very, very similar to Assassin's Creed 2. In fact, Assassin's Creed 2 was the last Assassin's Creed I played. The differences between the two are obviously the improved graphics and the story. Unity is gorgeous. Even a year and half later, it is one of the best looking PS4 games. The size of the city and on-screen action of the NPCs is amazing. The story in Unity is not so great. You get to meet a young Napolean. That seems cool. However, while Ezio was running his revenge scheme and learning about the Assassins, Arno is just running a revenge scheme, and keeps revenging long after he gets his revenge. Arno isn't a bad guy, for an assassin. It's just that Ezio was a better character you cared about more. At one point in Unity, Arno fights his mentor. I had zero feels for this fight. The characters didn't matter.

I'm giving Unity a solid 7. This isn't a terrible score. Unity is playable and fun in a drop a smoke bomb and spam square sort of way. The game looks great. The problem is clearly a lack of focus. Ubisoft was intent on tacking on as many features as possible and connecting to Uplay as much as possible. It's like how even the best Dell computer is sullied by its own crapware. Unity is so burdened by features that a new player can hardly figure out how to equip alternative weapons much less find anything on the in-game map. If you pick this game up for $10 or less, just ignore all of the side crap and focus on the main quest. Also, upgrade your home base early for easy money. Oh, and spam those smoke bombs.

I still suggest that you wait 1-2 years between every AC game, otherwise it gets very repetitive, nothing new. Climb, jump, kill, parade, shoot. Nostradamus missions and investigations are a nice alternate gameplay solution, but the franchise is starting to die out.

I bought this game for 19,99€ in 2016, after reading so many bad reviews. This is now the opinion of a Belgian, interested in French history (we learn it at school), and I think this has an importance on how you feel this game. I'll make it simple, pros and cons. I can understand people rating it 0-1, but there is a chance that you'll enjoy this game, despite all the problems. To compare with Dead Island, the most broken game ever, as long as you have fun, who cares...

    Pros :
    - Once again, learn history through Assassins's Creed, it is accurate, if you're interested in the French revolution, it's just every History teacher's dream.
    - Nostradamus missions, enjoyable to a certain point, you have to guess famous monuments through charades and clues. Works better if you know Paris.
    - Find the murderer missions, not as easy at it looks, once again based on real history.
    - Paris is beautiful, thousands of people in the streets, nice atmosphere. Maybe the game has been fixed a little since the first very bad reviews about graphics, maybe I don't care that much.
    - Multiplayer can be fun, being part of 4 assassins flying like the wind through windows and climbing all over the place is a nice feeling

    Cons:
    - Glitches everywhere, flying people and objects, people glitching through walls, but it doesn't actually messes with the gameplay. I was never stuck anywhere in combat or climibing.
    - Main quest is boring and predictable. That guy killed that guy, let's kill him.. oh wait, he received orders from that guy, let's kill him. Go there, kill everyone, come back.
    - AI is still poor. Walk pass a guy, he sees you, take cover, 10 seconds later he forgets you.. Classic AC.
    - **** Arno climbing on everything when you just want to run through a narrow street, makes you lose missions where you have to stalk someone or be stealthy
    - Multiplayer is laggy as hell sometimes, NAT3 issue
    - Gets repetitive, AC remains AC..

The story is awesome, despite the fact that the modern day is almost ignored and it has a lot more to do with assassins, comparing it to black flag. The graphics were absolutely GORGEOUS, the best looking AC game so far. The only drawback, which justifies an 8/10 score is its length. Despite the story being cool, it was too short. I mean it's like 12 sequences with 2-3 memories each. After that you had literally a TON of side quests that got repetitive. They could have worked a little more on that. At this point you must be thinking that the stealth is good and guess what: it isn´t: it is super frusterating and unplayable. Story is so so, however it is cliché and it is not the first time that we see a story about revenge, a stupid kid (Arno BTW) and love.
When you are climbing all the rooftops of paris the gamelay mechanics distinguishes themselves with the best parkour mechanics i´ve ever seen in the assassins creed series and the movements in fast kills (those you perform with your phantom blade) is really good too.OH and you really have to go to the rooftops because the number of npcs in the ground, that does not let you do anything there.
One thing that i really liked was the rating in the levels and missions and the fact that you have to progress with yourself for progressing in the missions.
This means that you will have to make quests and secondary missions during the story to earn money to buy armor and weapons and then proceed to the primary missions.
For that reason I put a big time into the game and that really motivated me to play.
At the end of the day, AC unity is a good but disapointing game and a game that you really can have fun with.

Story wise the game is quite lame, and has no emotional peaks or interesting turn of events, for they can be seen from a mile away. The worst aspect of this game, are its buggs and severe framerate issues, both of which turn the experience into a frustrating one.

Not all changes were bad, tough: the character customization is a welcomed change, (too bad is oftenly locked behind paywalls and microtransactions), also is the unique kills spread along the main missions. The city is beautiful to look at, and so it`s the character design. But in the end, the ills overweight the goods, and Unity shall ever be remembered as the lowest point of the series, and a reminder of how hurtful rushed videogame schedules are.

Not memorable, not fun, not interesting. A line of dialog from the final boss sums it up: "The order has become so corrupt that we've forgotten our purpose". Ubisoft has become so obsessed with getting every last penny from the AC series that it has thrown storytelling aside which was something that hooked me into the AC series.

    Positives:
+ A huge city of Paris to explore
+ The game looks great in cutscenes and in terms of textures and lighting
+ New weapons in the Phantom blade and Berserk blade
+ AI is tougher making the game more challenging
+ More areas to climb and hide(e.g inside buildings)
+ Coop is ok but not fantastic. Doesn't seem right in a stealth game.

    Negatives:
    - Combat is slow and sometimes unresponsive. Its a 50-50 chance whether your character will parry of not.

    - Gameplay graphics are awful. Draw distance is not that far, characters and objects pop in within viewing distance, Characters get stuck in walls and jump about the place due to colliders.

    - Climbing has become so complicated that Arno gets stuck to EVERYTHING. Trying to navigate into a window can be frustrating especially when chasing someone or trying to get away.

-Story and characters are bland and boring. We have another revenge main story plot which takes place in the French Revolution when it should be a French Revolution main plot with a revenge side-story. The story is also pointless as it tells us nothing about the Templars, The Brotherhood nor does it move the Modern day story along an inch. Players can skip this game and miss nothing from the AC storyline.

    - Paris map is so full of side-quests to do it becomes overwhelming. Honestly you cant even see the Paris map because its overrun with **** to do. Doesn't include a filter so you can see where the next story mission is. They overdid it on the side-quests big time.

    - Microtransactions. The game is set up to get people to buy in game money through micortransactions. It may not be obvious as other games but its there. Cafe renovating doesn't give you as much money as you'd expect and the best weapons and equipment are ridiculously expensive which would make affording them a very long grind. As always anyone defending microtransactions in a AAA release worth €60 is an idiot

What they weren't able to fix was the game itself, aside that it comes from a great saga that I loved, the story is awfull, characters won't enthrall you at all. The gameplay is more or less the same as they've been using for most Assassin Creed games, with fewer differences.

The coop was one of the most desired adds but, for me at least, it was nonsense and lacking in content.

I don't know why Ubisoft did this game, but it has ruined Assassins Creed for me at least.

I score it a 6 just for the old times, the game doesn't deserve the initial money, maybe 20-30€ should do it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't buy this game at launch, so many of the glitches had been patched by the time I got to play the game. I guess the glitches are the main reason, why this game's ratings are terrible.

There were still couple of bugs when I played this, but nothing game breaking. The gameplay is a hit and miss. Climbing mechanics are one of the worst of the series. The "controlled descending" was nice, but rest of it was bad. The combat system is pretty average. It is more unforgiving than in the previous games and for the first time in AC series I actually had to avoid combat, since the opponents were too tough. Good for you Ubisoft!

The "memories" or missions were also different from the previous games and to be honest, the freedom of how to kill your targets was a fresh way to change the gameplay. Main missions were good, but I couldn't bother with the side quests. They were too repetitive.

The story was pretty good up until the ending. Arno's and Elise's relationship was great and it really kept me playing through the story quickly. But then the ending was completely predictable and lame. Dark and gritty endings can be good, but not when they are done like this. Around halfway point of the game I already knew that Elise was going to die. If Elise would have lived, then that would have been a surprise ending and a very pleasant one! But now the ending just left a bitter taste in my mouth.

With slightly better mechanics, fewer glitches and with a different ending, this game really would have been a masterpiece...

An excellent and huge game. The positives are emphasized by detailed world that seems more alive now than ever before.

Unity is not a bad game, but it certainly doesn’t feel like it advances the series very much, especially for the first title in the series to be a fully next-gen game.

Bugs really throw Unity under the guillotine. [Jan 2015, p.78]
