Highly recommended for anyone who likes a below-average rpg with repetitive missions, damage sponge enemies, grindy progression, tons of microtransaction, tedious gameplay, average story, and a dead (but beautiful) open world.

I'm a huge fan of the combat in AC Origin and if you feel the same DO NOT BUY THIS!!!. The combat in Odyssey is clunky, unpolished, and feels like they took several steps back from the previous title. I really tried to be positive, but this game is complete garbage. I'm not happy with how poorly this game turned out and wanted to voice my opinion on it.

Spartan with no shield. Yeah 0. Huge map but everything is repetitive. Mediocre story that makes no sense. You won't feel like an authentic spartan at all.

The main goal of the game isn't to solve the main quest but to discover the world and what it has to offer. I've never spent any real money within the game and finished the main quest at level 56. Actually the main quest is the most disappointing thing of the game in my opinion, lacking a real strong and emotional scenario. A beautiful game, thanks to the Ubisoft Montreal team! Expand

A somewhat improvement over Origins. This game is very addicting and feels more fun than origins since you get to make your own decisions. The setting is also a lot better and armour in this game is really cool. Only issues I have is the running animations for Alexios look pretty weird and the game can get pretty grindy when trying to reach level 50.

AC:Odyssey is boring and the more it tries to be a jack of all trades, the more it becomes clear that it's a master of none. I can't play this game for more than an hour because gameplay and quest design feels like a monotonous chore and the cut scenes and story are boring and uninspired.

I've played all AC games and a big fan of the series. I also liked AC Origins a lot.

So when I first started ACOdyssey, I hated the game. Clunky parkour, bad combat, messy stealth, all of which appeared to be a substantial downgrade from ACOrigins. But after about 50+hours spent, I've changed my mind quite a lot. The game grows on you. Parkour, combat and stealth are still not very good

But after about 50+hours spent, I've changed my mind quite a lot. The game grows on you. Parkour, combat and stealth are still not very good I think, but the game makes up for it by having a great story and good character-building.

The game doesn't require microtransactions at all. I don't understand where this criticism comes from. You don't have to pay anything at all to level up or buy resources. The game provides them all, if you pace yourself and don't rush through the game. It is called ODYSSEY; it is supposed to be a very long and very big adventure. The best way to play this is not to grind, or rush, but maybe play a little bit (1-2 quests per day) everyday for weeks, or months. Grinding through will not be enjoyable, so think of this like a long novel to be read a little bit everyday and attain long-term immersion in the story. I don't have evidence on this, but I think the game is programmed to stop giving you interesting side quests after a certain amount of daily play. This is probably added as a hidden feature to prevent people from over-playing daily; but as I said, this is just a feeling and I don't have evidence on this.

I still dislike the game's combat, especially given how the series got it very right with ACBlackFlag. Why mess it up when you had near-ideal combat mechanics? Also, AC series is all about parkour and stealth. Both are sub-par in the game. This is probably because the map is so large that the only way to provide a uniform experience was to dumb down combat, parkour and stealth.

Another accurate criticism is the fact that the game contains very small portion of AC features. There is quite minimal linkage to the wider AC story line and the game doesn't feel like an AC game. Rather, this is the story of a dude and dudette having a fun adventure in the Greek islands with very little relevance to AC as a whole.

Overall, I think the game is good, deserves the time you invest in it and great holiday-season game to get lost in. Big world, lots to do and overall fun if you pace yourself and not rush through a fun experience.

The fun of this game basically hinges on whether or not you’ve played Origins.

Disclaimer: I loved Origins, and I loved Black flag. I played the **** out of both of those. I played Odyssey for 20 hours before returning it to GameFly. Odyssey is a mix of the two, but made by a different studio. So it does feel subtly different. There is a massive load of activities to do, but they do

Disclaimer: I loved Origins, and I loved Black flag. I played the **** out of both of those. I played Odyssey for 20 hours before returning it to GameFly.

Odyssey is a mix of the two, but made by a different studio. So it does feel subtly different. There is a massive load of activities to do, but they do feel a bit grindy, ESPECIALLY if you played Origins. If you did, this is so much more of the same as to feel redundant and kind of like a burdensome chore. If you didn’t, you’re in for a treat! Between the similar activities across both Origins & Odyssey, I’d say there’s about 50 hours of super fun immersion before it starts to feel repetitive. I played Origins for 80 hours, and only started to get that feeling around hour 65.

    Opinion on changes to Fighting:
I don’t like how they switched the fighting to a more “dance-like” Witcher style, and the weapon ability wheel is a step back. Origins had cooler abilities that felt less gimmicky (no superhuman flashy color magic abilities). The main point of contention for me, is that I loved the cursed weapons in Origins. These allowed you to take 3x damage, but also deal 3x damage. So you could in essence play Origins ultra realistically, like Dark Souls, killing guys with a few hits of only super cool finishers, but still had to be sneaky and calculated. Odyssey is the opposite— enemies have huge health pools, and you get into pretty long fights spamming abilities and waiting for their cool downs. It’s a big step in the wrong direction for me personally, I’m all about realistic challenge (as a proxy I’m a huge fan of Nioh, Dark Souls, and The Last of Us on Survivor difficulty).

    Note on Grindiness:
Some people say this game is much better if you pay for the XP boost, because if not you spend the majority of your time on the smaller side activities trying to level up. Origins was the opposite, more like the Witcher where it was easy to skip a lot of side content that might have been fun. I played all the Origins side content, taking the story super slow on purpose, and loved every bit. So I personally think you'd have fun without the XP boost, unless you did tons of similar side content already in Origins.

    Verdict:
If you played Origins, you might want to rent this first or just pass. If you didn’t, and liked the Witcher 3, you’ll love this.

This is not assassins creed!!! It is horrible to see how a stealth adventure has gone on to become a openworld gdr. Despite this the graphics remain superb as well as the suggestion linked to the historical period. The fights seem more fluid than ac origins but still have shortcomings. High level sound and infinite longevity.

I don't know why there has been so many negative reviews for this game. It might not be your typical AC game but it is close to the lore of AC than any other game. I would even go on to say this is more of a first civilization game. From get go you get to wield an Isu Artifact. The Atlantis story line keeps in touch with the lore too. AC Odyssey has only one glaring drawback in my opinion. In contrast to Origins, the melee combat in Odyssey is subpar. And since melee combat may be the overriding component of one's play style, I considered scoring this one 9 out of 10. However, I feel this game deserves a 10 because everything aside from melee combat is class. Plus, if you're accurately spec'd for ranged combat and good with the bow, you can easily one or two-shot literally every non-boss enemy type in HARD mode - including mercenaries - using basic arrows. Therefore, making melee combat redundant. Moreover, the mechanics of ranged combat in Odyssey are vastly improved over Origins.

At no point during my tens of hours of play was I interrupted by, forced to or felt the need to invest in a micro-transaction of any sort. All micro-transactions in AC Odyssey are neatly tucked away in a side menu - out of sight.

It may or may not be true that one can't simply play through the main questline while ignoring side activities, due to alleged hurdles in levelling. I wouldn't know because I did a heck of a lot of side activities throughout. There are many different kinds of level-boosting side activities in AC Odyssey. Yes, the daily/weekly side quests posted on billboards are mostly monotonous. But, there are other side quests scattered throughout the world that play out similarly to those in Witcher 3. There is a lot to do in this game - moreso than in Origins. Nonetheless, I understand that some players may not have time for side activities.

All this build up to a finale which ends in two women sobbing, other endings are also complete garbage. You don't care much about the characters at all. I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
