Showing the power of the Source Engine, this game is beautiful and far from the "cheap toy style" of the similar proposal coming from CoD. This only makes me imagine how amazing can be a battle royal with Frosbite in Battlefield. Gungame feelings are perfect, as they were in the Titanfall saga.

BUT this game is not for those who are seeking something more realistic, calmed and pure real war strategy. This is pure action with magic, instant regeneration, weird magical movements as Titanfall and Overwatch, avoiding any realistic battle strategy possibility where dead is not even definitive anymore.

After the first goods vibes, this game goes far in the exploration of this new game style... but still not enough groundbreaking to offer something really interesting (for me).

While the gameplay for Fortnite can be fun at times and is fast paced, I hated the building side of things. I'm just not that quick to react. And lets be serious. There is rarely original final battles in Fortnite. It's just build, build, build to not get shot.

PUBG and Blackout are nearly identical gameplay-wise and pace. Gameplay can be fun, but seems more fun when playing with a squad of friends. The pace is slow. Maybe map size to player count ratio has something to do with that. I don't know. I feel like I spend more time out of the games than I do in them at times.

Apex Legends seems to take the best parts of the previous 3 (and possibly others). It's fun and fast paced like Fortnite. The guns feel good like PUBG/Blackout. Throw in some character perks ala R6:S/Overwatch, and you've got a great game! Are you like me and aren't really a mic person? Great! They have a ping system that allows you to mark targets, items, where you want to go, acknowledgements, and more. It's easy to use too!

The game is free to play. Do yourself a favor and try it out. Sure it's EA and sure there are 'lootboxes'. But they are all cosmetic. So just don't buy them.

You get weapons and set-abilities that are all cut out of the Titanfall games (for the most part) that are scavenged on a map that you drop in on with a fixed 3-man team that is controlled by a single player so you can stay together easier (or you can split up if you choose with the press of a button and drop wherever you prefer). This game is designed from the ground up to be a 3-man squad shooter/survival experience, so there's no solo mode and queueing up with a group of random people is going to be... rough. Communication, capability, precision, and a little luck is what you need working in tandem to win a game, even just getting to the top 3 squad showdown at the end. Playing by yourself is risky, to say the least. I find myself an above-average player for shooters and survival games and I have a hard time making it more than a few minutes beyond the initial drop if my team dropped anywhere near another team. Playing with a group of friends completely changes the outcome - I typically make top 10 most of the time (haven't landed the #1 spot as of writing this review). Everything about this game looks promising but I don't think it's ready for primetime. Simply not having a solo mode is a mild turnoff and simply copying and pasting the Titanfall universe content and pasting it into a BR map lacks imagination and I'm surprised to accuse Respawn Entertainment of that since Titanfall was fairly creative and unique. There's also only one map at launch and it gets old after a while if you're going to binge this game. Oh, it's only 60 players total which, depending on whether teams fan out or condense at the start, feels like a low population cap as there are games where my team would see zero other players until the final phases. Apex Legends is a nice foundation but it has a lot of work to do in order to really challenge PUBG and Fortnite for BR dominance. It feels a lot like Call of Duty's Blackout mode and that's another problem that surfaces - this game exists already within COD Black Ops 4. Apex Legends might be free to play but a load of people were already playing BO4 and it seems to me that people were fairly happy with Blackout. To put it simply: Apex Legends wants to stand out but after 10 hours of play I don't think it does. If it weren't free I'd never buy it. I have some fun with it and I am confident that RE will work to deepen the experience (classes are very limited at launch and desperately need to be expanded upon) but as of the time of writing this review I don't think Apex Legends is anything more than a flash in the pan. I could be wrong but it comes out during a busy games season that include The Division 2 and Anthem which will be launched just a few weeks after Apex Legends was made available. Expand

I am very split on Apex Legends. On one hand, it is the best battle royale currently on the market made by a developer studio that has time and time again proven that they know their stuff. On the other hand, it is a completely soulless, overmonetized project published by (gasp) EA, that yes, should have been Titanfall 3.

The Titanfall franchise is arguably the greatest online PVP FPS game of the 8th generation of consoles. Titanfall 1 made huge strides in bringing some much needed diversity and creativity to the genre, while Titanfall 2 takes everything that made the first game so great and expanded and improved upon it. It added an actual single-player campaign, and a great one at that. Titanfall Assualt was a one-off mobile game that released in 2017, but it is a very loose relation and it should not be tied to the two other main games in the franchise.

And here we are. 2019, and we did not get Titanfall 3, but instead a multiplayer only, always online battle royale game. There is no single player campaign following the events of Titanfall 2, there are no Titans, and the movement that made the previous game so great is largely absent. The disclusion of these things is baffling, and I have a feeling that EA felt that they should play it safe instead of innovating in the genre that needs innovation most.

Titans in the game could have been implemented in one or both of these ways:

    1. Each character has a unique titan on a cooldown separate from their L1 and L1 + R1 abilities
    2. There are titans scattered all around the map in various high-loot locations

The Titans would have to be far weaker than in previous entries, only having about 1/3 of the health and take damage from all weapons. Their firepower would have to be significantly toned down as well, with their various weapons only doing the damage of normal weapons, if not slightly more. The inclusion of Titans would not only add depth and longevity to the game, but it would make the game a more fun experience for everyone.

Advanced movement such as the movement present in Titanfall 2 would alleviate one of the major problems that I and many others have with Battle Royale games in general: the map being too large. Large maps mean long stretches of mindless moving from location to location, and if Titanfall 2's momentum-transferring system was implemented straight into Apex Legends, the game would be infinitely more involved.

A campaign in a battle royale game has not been done before to my knowledge (No, I do not count Fortnite, as the campaign was not created with a battle royale mode in mind), and there is incredible potential for one here. Imagine the possibility for individual character backstories and how Respawn could give us more reason to care about the "why" behind the battle royale mode. These two modes could be tied in incredibly, and once again, the relationship between the Pilot and the Titan would be a main focus of the story. There is arguably even more potential for amazing setpieces here, as the campaign could even see you and your titan working your way through the Battle Royale map. Future Battle Royale maps could also mean future side stories as the game gets new content.

However, I need to give credit where credit is due, and the weapons all have that feel that only Respawn could deliver. A large portion of the game's arsenal of weapons and grenades are brought in from previous Titanfall games, which, of course, it's a shame that we didn't get completely new weapons, but I am satisfied with the new ones that we received. The new Prowler SMG and Peacekeeper Shotgun were particularly satisfying, and the Arc Star rework was unnecessary but appreciated.

The way that armor was implemented is a breath of fresh air for the genre, as it is noticeably more abundant. Inventory space has also been increased from games such as Fortnite, and can be increased further with higher quality backpacks. This is a great change, allowing for more tools to be carried by players to use in combat or otherwise.

The mechanic which allows for a shield to be put up when your legend is in a critical state is completely pointless. Melee attacks negate the shield completely, and most people only wait to kill off critically wounded enemies until they are out of combat, if they do so at all.

Monetization is another area where the game falls short. There is no progression system to be found; any and all cosmetics obtained must be either bought with IRL currency or obtained through a slot machine. It seems that no matter how much EA is scolded for their anti-consumer policies, they turn around a week later and stuff even more of them into their games.

So overall, I would have to give this game a 5/10. Respawn's creativity and vision for this IP is at times overshadowed by EA's greed and unflinching agenda.

For starters some of the game mechanics are phenomenal. The game has a "ping" system where you are able to point out objects, locations and enemies with ease. This allows to play whole rounds without using a mic. Another great mechanic is the games revive system. If you were to get downed by an enemy, your teammate has the chance to revive you (like every battle royal) but If you were to get killed, your teammate can grab your tag and bring it to a revive station. BAM, you're back in the game. This adds a unique spin and I love it.

One this that should be said is that right now you can only play as a 3 person team. I've played a good amount of games with a full squad and as solo w/ randoms. So far I've won 2 games with the squad and 1 game with just one random. Regardless, each match was fun, entertaining, and exciting. I know that they will be adding more game match options but even as it it now, its fun!

I've player majority of the battle royal games out today and this is how I would put them into order (top being better):

    Apex Legends
    PUBG
    Fortnite
    Black Ops: Blackout
    Ark: Survival of the Fittest
    H1Z1
    Realm Royale
    The Culling

I am excited to see where this game goes!

    Personal score: 9/10

Obviously, the comparisons pretty much end with "pre-set Heroes fighting in an ever-smaller map" but it's a solid idea that's executed well by the team that brought us Titanfall. The map creates a really excellent feel of scale with massive cliffs and canyons to fight and navigate through, large and fairly well-spaced constructs, and solid if familiar weaponry (a fair amount of the weapons are copy/pasted in from Titanfall's exisiting armory).

I really enjoy the experience, it feels new and fresh relative to the barrage of Battle Royales, as you can truly feel the developer's experience with FPS combat and gunplay here. One of my favorite parts of the game too is the audio design- rifles crack and bullets hiss, and a firefight in a canyon sounds exactly like you'd expect: rolling, booming thunderclaps, the whip-like snaps of distant sniper fire, and if you add in one or two of the artillery-based "ultimate" abilities such as Gibraltar's precision air-strike, you've got a really engrossing visual and acoustic shooter.

My only hard complaint is that certain character abilities seem to lack general usefulness. While those like lifeline's healbot and Gibraltar's bubble shield are pretty universally helpful, some like Bloodhound's tracking are context-specific.

Grab two friends, download it, and marvel at how lucky we are that games this polished and well-executed are free.

I have to admit, I am hating myself for this too. I never got into Fortnite or PUBG because the genre never appealed to me and those games still don't. However, I do like Respawn and was willing to try if for the sake of that. And I'm glad I did. Respawn somehow was able to maneuver around EA's red tape and greediness and develop a good game.

The game is probably one of the best running Free-to-Play games out there. And I don't mean that as a diss. It truly is smooth and the graphics are beautiful. The "team" battle royale feeling adds something to the pot in this game for someone like me who is sketchy on multiplayer games. I feel like their are true tactics I can speak in regards to my team as to how to feel safe which makes the headset I spent $70+ on feel like a good investment for once.

Yes, their are microtransactions in this game, however, AS OF NOW, it doesn't have an effect in gameplay.

My honest argument is give it a try. I don't like the battle royale genre myself, but honestly, even this one got me hooked. Were it not for being by Respawn, I would have never tried it, but I am honestly glad I did. If you try it and don't like it, hey it's free. You feel like every weapon is viable (except maybe Mosambique) and every Legend or Hero is contributing to your playstyle. There is nothing 'OP' in this game, everything is useable.
Other great thing are the graphics and atmosphere. The world and every character is crafted with lots of details. You can feel the personality on each Legend and you can customize your Hero how you want with various skins, poses, stats and badges. You can build your own "legacy" with each Legend because your stats and badges are fitting to the one Legend you played.
If you win a game, you get appreciated through being the champion next game. So everybody knows who to look after and can see you on different big posters throughout the map. It gives you an extra rush seeing you on a big screen hanging there, visible for everyone.
Only a few deaths are really getting you to rage, normally you'll rage a lot but through clever design choices with armor, HP and TTK you have the chance to win every gun fight and even win games when you are not the biggest 'aimer' in the world.
On top of all that, it got released in a finished state and is free to play. The prices for the premium currency are more then fair and only thing you can buy are cosmetics, no pay to win what so ever.
The only big bad thing for me is Origin. Origin is just not working, lots of issues with connecting to friends, to the game and to a lobby.

You see, I am a big fan of this game. No game got me that addicted and no game feels so good.
Even if you dont like Battle Royale, this game is nothing like PUBG for example. GIve it a try, trust me.

When the game loads into a game, it looks great and plays like a dream. However, actually getting into a game is practically impossible thanks to constant games freezing (for 30+ seconds), matchmaking bugs, audio clipping and slowdowns, and a whole host of other issues.

This game shouldn't have launched in this state, it feels like an alpha version. Origin and Respawn need to address

Don't play this game.... yet.... wait for the fixes to come in, and then hope that the player base is still decent.

A very good and finished game imo. Tight controls and doesn't tank my PC despite having good graphics and fast gameplay (running at a steady 120 frames most of time). The character abilities are pretty cool and you'll need to use at the right time and place in order to get the dub. I'm personally disappointed that you can't play duo or squad but maybe respawn will change that when they add more legends or something. You can't wall run :(((((( (maybe add lootable magnetic boots for metal surfaces later???) and there are no Titans (add Titans to high tier loot areas, repair kits, repair legend later???).Plus, something's up with Origin's launcher in terms of tracking my hours. I've played at least 12 hours, not 52. A lot of hate for Legends is because it's another battle royale with micro transactions and the characters being annoying (i can sympathize lol. Emo goth wraith saying emo stuff and gibraltar is loud af) and "forced diversity" (just play as Pathfinder if skin color matters to you that much) and EA is terrible blah blah blah. None of the micro transactions effect the gameplay whatsoever--they're purely cosmetic (just like fortnite and PUBG). You can easily get skins for gaining XP. And news flash, developers need money to continue to update their games and pay their employees to make new ones, especially for a free-to-play. Expand

Purely from a gameplay perspective, it’s the best first person battle royale title out there, and well worth dipping into a year on. It’s disappointing that Titanfall 3 seems further away than ever, but for now Apex Legends will do just as well.

Apex Legends spices up the battle royale formula with hero-based shooter pizazz and its revolutionary pinging system, which helps everyone feel welcome to the team. Though its Season One rollout has been disappointing content-wise and its visual flair remains bland, Apex Legends still has the solid foundation necessary for a free-to-play shooter to survive in the long run. And with 50 million players reached in its first month, it's not like it's slowing down anytime soon. We're all jumpmasters now.

There are many free to play Battle Royale games out there that are vying for your attention, but Apex Legends takes the genre to new heights with its superb gunplay, Moreish game loop and a superb communication mechanic.
