Virtua Tennis 2009 is like a missed chance. Technically speaking, the programmers have done a good job, and who has never played at VT before could really enjoy it. But if you’re an aficionado of this franchise, this will look to you like nothing more than a restyling. And a polished look just isn’t enough for a fully priced game.
-
Virtua Tennis really needs to start justifying its existence at this point. It’s more of the same with some minor additions, and is only recommendable if you missed the previous games. With other tennis games competing for the top spot, Virtua can’t be complacent for one more game. Evolution is a must.
-
It's hard not to feel a little underwhelmed by what Virtua Tennis 2009 has to offer. While the online multiplayer facet has undoubtedly been improved, the disappointment over what's been done to World Tour mode and the general lack of ambition in certain areas leaves me wanting.
-
Despite the fact that all the evidence suggests Virtua Tennis is a series stuck in a rut, Virtua Tennis 2009 is still great fun, especially in multiplayer.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is a game dedicated to the fans of the series and more in general a good, arcade tennis game. If you already own the third chapter, you should think carefully before buying, anyway, as, even if it's the best of the brand, it doesn't evolve so much from the predecessor.
-
Virtua Tennis feels like a decent tennis-game. It, however, will never feel like a revolution due to the lack of new gameplay elements. Even though Sega has put in some nice and entertaining, but very small, adjustments. Virtua tennis has easily reached its full potential.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is an update of the series and with the exception of minor improvements and refinements, only a few innovations have been implemented. Most devoted fans may be disappointed with the lack innovation; still it is fun to play as usual.

Playstation Official Magazine UKThe good news is that playing with friends is still really fun. [July 2009, p.96]
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is not a bad game, not at all really. It’s just incredibly familiar if you’ve played Virtua Tennis 3, and seeing as that came out three years ago it’s not particularly a good thing.
-
There maybe some minor issues with regard to slow-down and lagging, but overall Virtua Tennis 2009 is a well-presented, and exceptionally playable tennis game.
-
The Top Spin series, despite its gameplay issues, at least made an effort. Virtua Tennis needs to try much harder if it’s going to regain its title as the preeminent tennis franchise.
-
It's a slight advancement over its predecessor, VT 3, but its biggest weaknesses, the online and single-player modes, mire an otherwise satisfying experience.
-
While Virtua Tennis 2009 is still the best arcade tennis game around, it is hard to recommend for anyone who has any of the previous games. With too few changes and a faulty online experience, Virtua Tennis 2009 doesn't quite miss the ball, but it's certainly no ace.
-
A disappointment for me. Maybe it’s because I’m a rabid tennis fan and player and I wanted more from the series this year, or maybe it’s because I feel like I’ve played this game before on the Dreamcast.
-
Virtua Tennis is too easy and inconsistent to entertain you for long.
-
Virtua Tennis shines of the light of the original one. Too many problems for the single player and a lack of courage by Sumo Digital keep it in limbo.
-
Truly, Virtua Tennis 2009 is little more than a lazily rehashed and less than polished iteration of what was offered in Virtua Tennis 3.
-
Playstation: The Official Magazine (US)If you're a seasoned pro of the Virtua Tennis series, the latest tweaks don't necessarily add enough layers to warrant an upgrade. [Sept 2009, p.79]
-
It’s disappointing from a tennis fan’s standpoint to inform you that this isn’t worthy of your time or money.
-
If you're a fan of tricky action packed and past-faced tennis, then look the other way. Virtua Tennis 2009 is an arcade game, period. The game is to easy, extremely boring, and has very little content compared to its 2 year old predecessor. Add a useless net code and you've got yourself a huge $60 dollar disappointment.
