I was pretty skeptical based on the mixed reviews, but this game is actually pretty astounding. Once you get the hang of the controls, the gameplay becomes immensely satisfying. It's definitely a gritty, down-to-earth shooter and feels very much different from the arcade feel that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has. This is by far the best FPS ever to grace a gaming console. Never before have i played a game where you feel so much in the middle of complete and utter chaos. The enermy AI is brilliant, making the game even more realalistic.

The controls are tight and the multi-player is sick. Even the story, contrary to what all of the critics are saying, is somewhat decent. The ONLY downfall is no co-op. Oh this game could've been perfect-- I'll give it a 10 even though it's deserving of a 9.5.

Excellent campaign (single player mode). But CONTROL, CONTROL, CONTROL is an issue. If you're used to the smooth and tight feel of Call of Duty 4 and 5 (WaW), then the KZ2 controls would definitely feel a bit sluggish. This becomes an issue during multiplayer games. Thanks to the 1.20 patch, there are very fluid controls, and I was amazed to see the level of detail and graphics put even into this part of the game. Throughout my 20 hours of playing the online mode, I have never experienced any lag at all. Epic game indeed. The visuals are outstanding and the intense enemy AI will always keep you on your toes. Using cover in this game is essential to your survival. The class based multiplayer is very intense. The dialog is kinda stale and the story is competent for a first person shooter. The voice acting is good but don't expect oscar worthy performances, its a video game after all.

One of the first things I noticed about killzone is that there is no aim assist, which obviously makes it harder to aim, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, just different from most shooters. If you own a 120hz set, grab a bucket. Now, the game has 1 big flaw. The controls are clunky and if you're used to play COD4, you will feel like you're playing underwater playing this game. You kind of get used to it during campaign. I tried the multiplayer and it was OK. But the control issue makes you slow at reacting and you just can't move or dispatch enemies as fast as Modern Warfare has accustomed us to. Because of these issues and with the graphics alone as an upside, I just don't see myself popping this game inside my PS3 for a multiplayer session instead of playing COD4, let alone paying 50-60 bucks to keep it after beating my rental copy. If you're a PS3 owner you owe it to yourself to play this game and see what your black shiny beast is capable of doing when the programmers know what they're doing and are competent enough to harness a big chuck of the untapped PS3 power. Now, graphics wise, this game has spoiled me by setting the bar so high that I won't settle for anything inferior from now on. From here on out, every time a new PS3 game is released and does not look like this or better, I will deem the programmers incompetent and undeserving of their salaries. Expand

They dont kill the game, but are irritating, at least to me. The AI can be cheap at times, killing you as you turn a corner (ex, i opened a door which i was suppose to, was killed instantly by a Helgast with a shotgun... lame). Your teammates often stand around, but mostly if its just you and one other guy, when its several they do fine. But mostly they dont seem to help too much. Did the graphics meet the bar set by the E3 trailer from 2005? Absolutely. Is it a solid FPS? Oh yeah. Is the game innovative? In my opinion, Yes. Did it live up to the hype? Try it yourself and you tell me. Let me get to the one gripe of the game first, the Controls: I was not entirely pleased until I found out the problems most people have are caused by a Display setting on their PS3s. The controls are fine, work great. It was the complaint about latency (lag) when trying to aim or move. Cross Color Filter Reduction is causing havoc for many gamers. Turn this off and BAM! Problem solved, controls feel more responsive. Graphics: Best in class. Best of the Best. At first, they didn't seem to be that great. In some ways I felt Gears of War 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 looked better. Until I moved past the first 2 levels. Once you get to the 3rd stage, wow. Unbelievable. Everything really begins to pick up and you are in for an outstanding visual treat. It is truly a stunning game that will amaze anyone with the high level of detail and thumping crisp sound. Oh the sound. It's an overload of the senses. Innovation: Many people say the game did not innovate. I would happily challenge anyone to debate on this topic. Sure many things included are standard FPS features. Level styles, turret and vehicle segments, cover system, destructible environment, online class system, and proximity chat. Yet, not many games have been able include all of this within one title. Actually, I can only think of one game that has done all of these in one installment; Killzone 2. The developers made the cover system work well for the first time in an FPS while remaining in First Person View. F.E.A.R. dabbled at it, but it felt tacked on and weak. Rainbow Six Vegas has a working version, but changes to 3rd person to make it effective. There is far more destructible environments than I initially expected which really adds to the immersion of a great title. Story: Not Oscar winning dialog or story. No. People complain about the fowl language used in the game. To those people who complain about it; How many military branches do you know of where, when they are at war and are in the heat of battle talk like a college professor? If I'm being shot at while on the battlefield of a war, you better be %$#-@#$% #*$^&@#! right I am going to get fowl mouthed. Its your typical macho men war style talk. What do you expect? Dialog found in Driving Miss Daisy? I hope not. Multiplayer: Community. Deep. Addictive. Fast. Chaotic. Everything you want in an online shooter. Class system with customizable options (similar to FFXI sub-jobs) really flesh out the online space and turn it into an FPS/RPG. Leveling up hasn't felt so rewarding since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. With so many classes, weapons, badges, ribbons, and trophies to unlock. There is plenty there to keep everyone busy for many many months (or years) to come. Complete with leaderboards, stat tracking, Clan system, Join friend/clan options. Doesn't get much better than this. Co-op: Minimal co-op options, but with the option to have online bots what's so different from this and Gears' Horde mode? Sure a co-op story would have been nice, but I am happy the team behind Killzone 2 remained focus on creating one of the best multiplayer experiences on any platform. Besides, I hear the developers are looking into expanding co-op functionality via DLC! Gameplay 9.8 Graphics 10 Sound 10 Presentation 10 Story 9.0 ------------ Overall 9.75 Expand

The campaign is intense, tout, and can be challenging, given the amazing AI that the Helghast display. Just like other great FPSs, the multi-player is where this game shines. The on-line experience is even more amazing that the campaign, because of the game types, the weapons, the leveling-up, and the map design. All of this made even more incredible by the fact that the visuals are just as stunning and immersive as in the campaign mode. Nothing like this has been achieved previously. The default controls can take some getting used to, but they can be changed for those who need it. The realistic physics and "heavyness" of the character movement are a plus for me, as these have struck me as caroony and unrealistc in some of the best FPS -- yes, I mean COD4. No doubt this is the best shooter on the PS3, perhaps any console. Obviously the graphics are the best seen on a console, even playing rival to the top PC games as well.

The Single Player campaign is not the poster boy of the game, but it excels nevertheless, inviting you into the multiplayer experience perfectly. Players are forced to think intelligently (something unheard of in COD/Halo/Resistance), with impressive AI and devastating aiming (especially on Elite mode), the SP is not a mode to be ignored or looked down on!
Now onto the star of the game. The multiplayer mode of Killzone 2 really >makes< the game. A well made set of game types combined with balanced weapons and classes allows for an enjoyable experience not often found. This is down to two main reasons, the maps - which allow fair and competitive play for both sides equally - and the longevity - each game you play will be different, not once will a game play out the same. Combined these allow the game to thrive into one of the best shooters on the market (if not >the< best).

DLC is something always on gamers' minds these days, and GG has not left Killzone 2 alone. The Steel and Titanium pack recently released has given 2 maps, Vetka Cruiser and Wasteland Bullet, adding new levels of tactical gameplay which were perhaps missing in the original maps. Perhaps the real bonus though, and music to old fans ears, is the possibility of maps from the originall Killzone, as "retro" maps have been confirmed. Not only are more maps being introduced, but GG are always making patches, improving gameplay and fixing any errors.

Of course the game >does< have some problems. One that irks many gamers is the Assault Class, your standard, double armour, rocket launching, health regenerating fellow. While this is definitely something gamers are not happy about (generally speaking), a well aimed headshot does the job! And the fact they are allowed does not ruin gameplay (and often servers ban this class as well as rocket launchers). The only other issue is the occassional error seen caused by network problems. These have steadily decreased since launch and GG is continuing to patch these.

So if you enjoy your FPS games this is one to add to your collection. This may not be the best shooter ever (it may well be), but you're certainly missing out if you don't buy it!

Content (5/10) - 20 guns. 11 of which are in multiplayer. 8 maps (10 if you spend $6.99). 10 ranks which are almost pointless except for unlocking classes. 7 or 8 different specs to play as. Sound: 8/10 Excellent apart from the characters dialogue. Tried to make it too macho, just comes across as painful. Gameplay: 6/10 The input lag just absolutely kills any hope this game had at being the 'halo killer' everyone wanted it to be. Deny it all you want, but there IS input lag and its NOT a design decision. At a guess I'd say that the PS3 simply cannot handle all that is going on while maintaining instant input response - think of it like playing Crysis on a PC on High settings, when your PC is only really capable of playing it on Medium. Also the campaign is far too short, especially for a game thats been in development as long as this. 5 hours MAXIMUM on anything but the hardest difficulty just doesn't cut it these days. The actual gameplay is as generic as it comes too. If you've played any FPS game in the last decade you've played Killzone 2. The single weapon + pistol system is a HUGE gamebreaker, as it discourages the use of the heavy weapons such as a rocket launcher since if you carry that around and come across a bunch of enemies you've only got 2 shots then what? A pistol. Horrible decision. Multiplayer: 7/10 Warzone mode is great, as is the Client Side Hit Detection, but some dubious classes and not enough levels let the game down. Lag is also a problem in 99% of matches (even on 8mb ADSL2+) due to the location of the dedicated servers, and the ranking system is so shallow and weak that youll be done with it in 15-20 hours, leaving you with nothing more to gain from further play. And again, the input lag ruins it. Having to fight with the controls constantly to get the character to do what you want WHEN you want it is beyond forgiveness. Being a HUGE fan of the original, I so wanted Killzone 2 to be the best game I've ever played. It's not though, it's nowhere near it to be honest. Halo killer? Not a chance. Call of Duty killer? Nope. Haze killer maybe. Better luck next time Sony/Guerrilla. Expand

Unfortunately it has so far failed to live up to what we have been led to believe. Gameplay is average, nothing more than the basic tick box FPS affair, remove the red glowing eyes and you could be playing almost any other shooter. Graphics are very good, but then they should be, this is the PS3 after all and Killzone 2 has been one of the flagship titles for a long time in waiting for this console. Re-spawning enemies should have been consigned to the history books long ago but here they are again, very very lazy and it makes some parts of the game amazingly frustrating. The taking cover aspect that has been bolted onto many games since Gears Of War is again present here and has been implemented pretty shabbily, having very little effect unless you choose something the size of a house to hide behind. Another disappointing inclusion in Killzone 2 is the poor AI of the computer controlled characters in campaign mode, developers must think it is excusable to pass this off on the public if they intend to push a title as an "online" experience, why program decent AI if you can let other people make up for shortcomings?... All this adds up to a competent shooter but nothing worth raising it up above the rest of clones out there. Teletext review really is the perfect quote to sum this game up: "One of the best looking games ever, but also one of the least ambitious in terms of anything else". Expand

Honestly talking, this is an amazing game. Yes the story line is a tad stale, but i dont play games for story so I dont care. The multiplayer is hands down the most "action dense" gameplay I have ever experienced on any console. The graphics are amazing. The gameplay is amazing. The destructibles are jaw dropping. If you own a ps3, get this game.

I'll say it again: Killzone 2 is the best console first person shooter ever. It will be bested one day, and that is as it should be, but this game has set the proverbial bar so high we reckon it'll be the king for a good long while... Hail to the king, baby....this game is GOD-LIKE!!!

This game is amazing. Incredible visuals and compelling gameplay.

And for all the haters that say the control system sucks. I have to agree that the default setting is crap (L3 to look down sights?) but if you switch to the alternate 2 controls ( pretty much the COD controls we all want) then you may find you have a brilliant game in your possesion. Game on!

Note to Jon L and others: just because you suck doesn't mean the controls are bad. The controls are fine once you master them. I'd like just a BIT more turning speed though. As for the multiplayer maps, all 8 are well designed and accomodate different tactics, and all 8 have plenty of different routes you can take (usually 3 distinct routes from your spawn base). Aiming - again, Note to Jon L and others: just because you suck doesn't mean the controls are bad. The controls are fine once you master them. I'd like just a BIT more turning speed though. As for the multiplayer maps, all 8 are well designed and accomodate different tactics, and all 8 have plenty of different routes you can take (usually 3 distinct routes from your spawn base). Aiming - again, don't criticize the mechanics because you can't do it - just take your pwning like a man. The multiplayer DOES let you unlock things and skews it toward players who have unlocked their preferred badges. but you have the M80 assault rifle from the get-go, and that's the overall best gun anyway - and it makes you want to keep going to unlock more things. Jon L, you think the MP5 and the AK-47 were the best guns in COD4? That's hilarious - I'd own you repeatedly with 3 round bursts from my M-16. Strategic camping or coming in guns blazing - whichever style you prefer can be effective, just like in COD4. and every other FPS. I'll give COD4 a slight edge in multiplayer and KZ2 a slight edge in single player. That's high praise. The graphics - you'll be noticing stuff 3 months later and saying "that's cool". I'm hooked on multi at the moment, but I can't wait to take on single player on Elite difficulty - single player is short but it nevers starts to drag (COD4 did, toward the end). Overall this is a great game, a refinement on the FPS genre in general, and has the depth and substance to last for a long time. Expand

Well, unfortunately, the ally AI is so terrible that it made the last boss fight ridiculously unfair. I watched in horror as the final boss riddled Rico with bullets repeatedly, while Rico just stood there facing the opposite direction. Did he run? Did he return fire? No, he stood there, apparently so entranced by the palace architecture that he barely noticed the blood spewing from himself. This happened so often during the course of the game that the only reason I continued playing was I'm OCD and a glutton for punishment. Also, the dialog was terrible, the voice acting was terrible, and the plot had so many points that lacked common sense it was difficult to suspend disbelief. Further, why would you ever put someone as dumb and as wholly worthless as Rico in charge of a squad? Further, the enemy, the Helghast, were far more interesting--well, actually interesting--than the people on your own side. Nothing irritates me more about a video game than when it starts off amazing and slides down the garbage chute the further in you go. It was wholly frustrating and rage-inducing to watch. Expand

The AI is absurdly braindead and will get in your way constantly. Be prepared to bash your teammates to oblivion to try and make enough space to walk past them in the tiny corridors where they nearly always block you. Plus the enemy AI just ignores you half the time. The cover system is so insanely bad I couldn't believe my eyes. When you duck out from cover your crosshair moves making it so that you can't line up shots beforehand. Not that any of the guns aside from the LMG are accurate enough to headshot with anyway. Sometimes you'll just get one-shotted by enemies from full health as well. There are the rocket launchers that do way too much splash damage, but also sometimes enemies will just put a burst into you and you'll die from full health, on normal difficulty. It happened to me about 8 times in my playthrough. Speaking of, the UI is so bad you almost never know where you're getting shot from, especially if you're colorblind like me. The story is also even more basic than the first game, and the characters are even more annoying, constantly screaming at you to hurry up or to revive them, not to mention just being the dumbest people alive, except for one of them who isn't in the game very long. But the worst part of the game is the performance. There are so many loading screens, loading stutters, and loading freezes. The game has to load practically every room you step foot in and every 30 paces you take. Even with all that loading, during firefights you'll be lucky to get more than 15 or 20 FPS, often lower if there's a lot going on and the god-awful framerate makes aiming a chore. Honestly, the only reason to play this game is to use that delicious flamethrower. Seriously, best flamethrower I've seen in a game. This game was such a disappointment. Compared to its contemporaries like Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3: ODST, this game is an absolute amateurish embarrassment. They had a good foundation going on with the first game and I couldn't wait to see the story, characters, and gameplay refined for a sequel. Instead, they focused solely on graphics and absolutely nothing else, making this truly some of the most insulting tripe the AAA industry has puked out. Do yourself a favor and steer clear. Expand

Killzone is a a rare series where the sequel is the best in the series , among-st borderlands and banjo kazooie. killzone2 rose from the mild dumpster fire that was killzone 1 to forge an identity for it self and make a huge splash despite the advertisement debacle.

Story: you play as sev an isa soldier who is part of a small what seems to be spec ops division of the isa. the story is probably the weakest part of this game , and characters are kinda boring . rico returns from killzone 1 but he was much more over the top in killzone one , here he is still a rough tough angry and violent man but he cares about his friends and squad mates . Sev being the player character is mostly silent and when he dose show emotion it dose feel awkward and unwarranted , like when one of the characters dose die ( wont tell you who) he gets angry and him and Rico start fighting and that felt out of place to me. besides little awkward moments the story flowed really well and had excellent pacing
    Story: 8/10

World building: killzone's best aspect to it is 100% its world building and killzone 2 builds on the first killzones lore in big ways . and this really just feels like one event in a bigger story, to the way every thing looks to the helgan planet to even the helgans ideologies vs the ideology of the isa every little bit of lore is in service to either the game play or the story. i like the world war 2 feel to the lore but with a sci fi spin on things makes for a truly great world
    World building: 10/10

Graphics: killzone 2 looks great , animations are very dynamic alot of thought was put into the reload animations , mostly because they are well made fictional guns . lighting is well done and the colour pallet is dark and neonish witch over all helps set the gritty cinematic tone for the game. for the ps3 this game looks great and even holds up today in 2019
    graphics 9/10

Gameplay: first person shooters are a dime a dozen these days but killzone 2 manages to set it self apart in terms of game play in little ways. like how most guns are actually inaccurate and shooting for center mass is a legitimate strategy in this game where in other games id be aiming for head shots. the cover system in this game is innovative taking cues from 3rd person cover shooters but done in a first person view it makes it so much more immersive. the games difficulty is just right and a solid game direction makes for a great cinematic game a huge step up from killzone 1
    gameplay: 8/10

sound design: for killzone 1 sound design was poor even having no battle music, BUT killzone 2 said none of that this time , all the music is cinematic and has an industrial feel to it witch goes along with the lore and story , and voice acting has greatly improved as well , lines are well spoken and not super cheesy ( maybe a little cheesy but not super ) all the guns sound cool and makes them a joy to shoot .
    sound design:8/10

    8+10+9+8+8=43
    43/5= 8.6

killzone 2 is a triumph over its predecessor and breaks the mold to become one of gameings greats

It's true that Killzone 2 is filled with moments that can handily be described as inspiring awe. Each scene is incredibly well detailed, from the gaps in jerry-rigged cover points letting you sneak in a killing headshot to scarred and scratched textures, the planet feels entirely believable... Without a doubt Killzone fans, action and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for best game of 2009. [Feb 2009, p.38]
  2. Killzone 2’s secret ingredient is the fluidity in gameplay that we have come to enjoy more than its graphical prowess or jaw-dropping visuals. And that’s what games have always been about... We're surprised to see Killzone 2 blows our expectations out of the water with a memorable SP campaign and a stellar MP component. To put it short, this game makes "Gears of War 2" look like a high school attempt at gaming and that is a HUGE compliment!
