Killzone 2 is one of my favorite FPS games for two reasons. One of the most important reasons is that this game has very decent to exellent AI and they do not spawn at exactly the same place each time. Although not perfect the AI are capable of making intelligent decisions as a group and this allows one to also take different approaches and routes to take the enemy out. Especially on the highest setting this is very important to keep the game fresh and challenging. The second reason I love this game is the visuals - the smoke obsuring your view ect is unlike any other game and adds to the adrenaline rush of playing through it. Ironically this is also one small fault of this title. Despite awesome graphics there are lots of times the game very briefly pauses to catch up and although the catch up is minimal it does interfere with the immersion of the gameplay. Two other small faults hamper this game: your AI buddies do seem to get in your way quite often and some chapters start you off with really low powered weapons inappropriate for the situation. I find this quite annoying rather than immersive to the storyline. Apart from these small issues Killzone 2 is top in class. Apart from the FEAR series you will not be treated to such good AI that you actually feel you are taking on a real fantasy group of enemies with more than half a brain each which is typical of almost all other shooters. The level of detail is absolutely amazing and when combined with the fairly competent shooting style and level design, it ends up being a thoroughly engaging and downright intense experience. Futuristic shooting has never been done so well and it's worth a play if only to ogle over the incredible visuals even if the story itself does sometimes reduce itself to laughable cliches and stock characters. Good shooter. Like the world created here. Although there is nothing new or special about it. It looks good, it controls well. I don't like the grey worlds though, there should be more color in this game.

Great looking game. Better than the look is the sound. Honestly no fps comes near it in terms of sound. The characters are kind of forgetfull (Natko and Rico are douche bags). The story isn't that great either. All of this is a minor issue when you dig in the action which is kind of unforgiving in higher difficulty.

Graphically, the game is a masterpiece - so much so that you can just stand there taking in your surroundings, unable to believe that developers could make such a visual feast. And of course the game itself is pure FPS with great gunplay, awesome enemy AI and killer envrionments to unleash your carnage. The characters are great too and the single player campaign is a nice, lengthy affair. The multiplayer is still active as of late 2015 and is also a lot of fun to play. Plus, it's a well known fact that KZ2 on hard is the most challenging game to beat on the PS3, so if you accomplish that you'll get some pretty good street cred as well. If you haven't played this yet you're really missing out, especially now that you can get a copy pretty cheap. 10/10. Expand

The cover system is terrible, as is attempting to melee an enemy. Grenades are slow to toss, the pistol is slow to fire. Only being able to carry 1 heavy weapon kinda sucks. Story-wise, I haven't been paying it much attention, I wouldn't call it captivating. Graphics were great. Enemies all sound the same. NPC allies are generally useless. I haven't beaten it yet, actually haven't played it in quite some time, as other games had captured my attention. I'd call it a disappointingly average game, so I'll give it a score that reflects my opinion. 5/10. Expand

Guerrilla has taken their FPS & made it a gritty, visceral experience that gave me an honest sensation of uneasiness about entering its fields of combat (yes, I almost felt afraid to enter the game it immersed me that much). They have achieved this not only with incredible graphics & environmental detail (from lingering dust in the air & your rifle scope after close explosions to rebar seen under bullet shattered concrete pillars), but they have succeeded in fleshing out the Helgast enemies. They are no longer just the 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts that pop out in fixed locations for me to shoot. From the opening speech of Helghast leader, Emperor Visari (again masterfully portrayed by Brian Cox) I knew this wasn't going to be any ordinary arcade shooter. Guerrilla has given us an enemy as tenacious & fanatical about fighting off invaders of their homeland as the SS was in the later days of World War II. They run & duck under cover when shot at and they cry out in pain when shot. The have become actual characters for me to know & fear. People who have long forsaken any diplomacy (I say people because I felt like I was fighting people, unlike other games such as COD4 online, while a superior game, still felt more like a game of tag) Alas, there is a little bit on the down side. Some of the in game dialogue did get a bit repetitive (Nice shot! yadda yadda) & somewhat juvenile. But even that wasn't enough for me to drop the score down a whole point. This is a game that deserve every one of its five stars from Playstation Magazine. To me, well worth the new release price. Expand

What a dissapointment. I really looked forward to this game. It would have been about a 7, but the controls SUCKED and ruined the game. Zooming in takes too long and when you hide the zoom automatically zooms back out, meaning everytime What a dissapointment. I really looked forward to this game. It wasnt just that they were sluggish and its incredibly hard to aim (which are major flaws), but everything you do in the game, the controls felt off. Zooming in takes too long and when you hide the zoom automatically zooms back out, meaning everytime you peak out you have to re zoom which takes time. Zooming is different with every gun and when you aim while your zoomed in it moves way too slow. Other than Zooming being pointless, so is the damn hiding. They failed at the cover system miserably. When you take cover they still manage to shot you and the control when you take cover is astonishingly awful. Plus, when you throw a grenage it only goes like ten feet and it takes a couple seconds to throw it, meaning that you have to stand there and get shot at everytime you throw a grenade and if you turn around too quickly you end up throwing it somewhere else. As cool as the guns are you can only hold one at a time, other than your useless pistol. Why did they decide to do that? Who only wants one gun at a time? I know most people dont agree with me, but the graphics arent good. The levels are repetitive and boring looking. Nothing cool looking like in Gears 2 or Resistance 2. Just factories and hallways. The enemies are all exactly the same too. Not nearly as good as the Gears 2 enemies. The difficulty balance was also way off, and sometimes it would instantly get way harder. The only thing I thought was excellent in this game was the music. Get Gears 2 or Resistance 2 if you want a similar but SUPERIOR game. Hell, you cant even aim in this game and you will want to break your PS3 in frustration repeatedly. Expand

This game is massively over hyped. This game may be a graphical milestone for the ps3, but the plot is nil. The mechanics are clunky and not very fun at all. Multiplayer is pretty much exactly what you have been playing since halo 2. Nothing new or interesting here, a lot of rehashed, poorly executed ideas.

It's the combination of the different departments that work in the game itself in a well thought way, with heart, and intelligence put into it.

Killzone 2 it's you running around in a wide and repetitive stage while shooting the exact same model of a "Helghast" over, and over, and over again, there's no stop into it and when finally is, it can just be summed up into you as the player getting on a mech and shooting the exact same models once again, it's an endless loop of repetition that i can't stand, there where several different times where i felt like i was being forced into played the game.

The worst problem of the game itself is the incredible lost of potential that "SCEA" demonstrates in this game. the "Helghast" could possibly be one of the most intriguing and interesting characters that someone might play against in a video game, but they get such a poor and mediocre treatment, that you just get upset there isn't a lot more information of them in the game, it's a huge waste of opportunity when it happen.

The characters that carry along with you throughout the "joyful ride" that "Killzone 2" offers, are one of the most uninteresting, and annoying characters that any game can share to the player, once again, this game just manages to shine when a huge waste of potential shows up.
But that's not the worst part of "Killzone 2", oh no, it gets much, much worse.
The gameplay of this game is extremely repetitive, there wasn't even one thing that i can recall being memorable or interesting, or that even shined throughout my boring, and dull experience with it.

It is disgusting that a game like "KIllzone 2" can be praised so much at a point of being considered, "one of the best shooters for the ps3", pathetic, shallow, uninteresting, boring, repetitive, it's the experience that you're more that likely are going to have while playing "Killzone 2".

Don't get fooled by the naive and ignorant reviews, of some people that can get surprised with a couple of nice graphical effects, and shadows that pop out, and cover the awful failure that this game is.
Even then, the cover up doesn't last for a while.

First, single player is just completely boring, killzone suffers from Gears of War envy and does it's best to rip off the characters and dialog, but does it with much harsher (and annoying language) and uninspiring generic levels. But who really cares about single player, I buy shooters for the multi-player and here lies the reason I will be trading it in this week, the controls are horrible. Even with the sensitivity tweaked all the way up you constantly feel like you are walking in mud. Trying to aim at someone can be an exercise in not throwing your controller across the room, especially after you go to move the gun and u suddenly pop into a melee strike or out of aim. The lousy controls cause multiplayer games to be stripped of their strategic elements and become large like the invasion of normandy where you are just throwing bodies at one of another. I understand at some level that the developers may have done this on purpose to simulate real life, but it just doesn't work and makes for a frustrating experience. Expand

Basically, you go from room to room (or from open-air area to open-air area), getting rid of the baddies and hoping to find a checkpoint before somebody kills you. If they kill you, you will most likely have to redo the last few places. Which results in excruciatingly repetitive gameplay. I'm not a big fan of the checkpoint system, but I also have seen games in which it works perfectly.

The AI is another peeve. You'll hear them yell that they'll cover you, which is a synonym for "I'll get shot ASAP", "I'll ignore that guy with the turret", and "I'll stay here and watch the baddies kill you while doing the objective, so you can do the last 2 rooms again". Adds to repetitiveness and destroys immersion completely. Just as bad as games in which your team is virtually indestructible, so that you don't even have to shoot a shot to win a level.

Controls aren't great either. It could be me, but the proximity of the grenade throw and the shoot button were irritating.

The game has potential, but fails.

everyone to their own, Killzone 2 (whilst looking nice) is a clumsy, awkward controlled FPS with perhaps the worst and most irritating characters I've ever seen in a video game.
I don't like the term 'overrated', so won't label this so. I know many like the game and I'm in the minority, but wasn't my cup of tea.

OMG!! What a worthless mediocre game. There are so many flaws with this game that I wonder what is with the high ratings. 1) The characters are so shallow. I noticed a significant amount of frame dropping by a whole(!) 2,97fps at some points. Nope. This is not the fps of our dreams. Beautiful game, disappointing gameplay. Hopefully Killzone 3 will address these issues.

And, well, that's about all the positive things i have to say about this game.

The story is a total fail. From the start i couldn't understand what we were doing on Helghan and why we were doing it. I couldn't even understand why we were supposed to be the good guys. Sure, the enemies looked menacing with all the nazi-like styling, but apart from that, the gamer doesn't have a clue what is going on, because the story is non existent.
Just like the story, the characters and their conversations are completely disappointing as well. I can't say much because i just don't remember anything. My brain has immediately deleted any relevant information because it considered it junk i guess... Uncharted's story and script is light years better.

The controls are adequate. I didn't like the covering mechanism -there were times that even though i was supposed to be covering, the enemies could still see me and shoot me dead- and the unimaginative way the developers chose to use the dualshock's accelerometer.

Overall, a mediocre game, way worse than Gears of War series, Call of Duty, Crysis or Half Life.
Certainly the biggest disappointment of all the ps3 exclusives.

However, even with all of these good points I still can't help but be disappointed. The story is crap and the characters are worse. Most of the time you wont even care about what they are saying. The fact that only a fraction of people playing KZ2 would have played KZ1 (which was really awful) makes the story even more meaningless. The final boss is actually harder than the whole of single player, which I hate. The controls are shaky and a bit delayed at times, the aiming is inconsistent which will then become frustrating, it hampers the experience. You can get used to the controls with time but they need to be fixed. Multiplayer is pretty good but there aren't many levels to play in. Not to say that the levels are bad, but there are only 8 maps. The multiplayer can be a joyful experience, but again the controls sometimes ruin it, on FPS's I usually play on the highest sensitivity but with KZ2 the higher you increase the sensitivity the worse it gets. Overrated, but not as bad as some games have been. Now, is this game better than Call of Duty WaW and Halo? Maybe. Is it better than Call of Duty 4? No. Expand

Yes it has classes, as unlockables, but that is a bad idea for the future of the game. In a months time any newcomers are going to have a hell of a time due to eveyrone else having bonuses and better equipment. Single player wise 3 missions in and i didn't know why i was invading this planet, i was told that these people are bad, that they invaded somewhere else, but why are they bad enough for the player to become like them by invading them, am i the bad guy? There is no explaination and i had to read the manual to understand why i was on the planet, that is bad storytelling. Also the description given to us by sony should not be the entire plot of the game, if it can be summed up that easily then theres something wrong! Gunplay is ok, again average, only being able to hold 2 guns makes it more realistic but if you do that, do not make the player pick up a rocket launcher just to open up a gate or something then have to swap back, its annoying.Other than that guns pretty generic (see the pattern here!) the gun with a dot scope, the single shot accurate gun etc, the cover system works quite well in single player, dunno why it doesn;t seem to be in multi or it is and I just havn;t spotted it Yes it has tacked on motion controls, and I am yet to figure out why reviewers are ok with ps3 tacked on motion controls when wii tacked on motion controls make them foam at the mouth and drop the score by 2 points. All in all a average shooter, kudos to the developer they did a good job, but with other shooters out there they really needed to do something different! The game is beautiful looking, the action scenes are well crafted; However, as the nintendo wii has shown, appearance only gets you so far. The controls are weak, so weak that it makes me fail this game. There is nothing more frustrating that trying to shoot someone online, only to find you cannot because the controls are non-responsive.

I used to think that Call of Duty 4/5 were the revolutuion of shooters, but, as most gamers do, they get bored. Then Killzone 2 came prancing along. The graphics are brilliant. The gameplay i would give 9.9 and the Story 9.5. Here we get to the multiplayer. It is superb on many levels and so i would give it one of the best games this year.

The maps are large, but badly designed. The engine does them a lot of favours because the environments look great with blowing wind and dust and visibility varies in locations, which is all great. But moving around the maps is very boring and straightforward. There aren't really alternate routes - like players had with movement in CoD4, going over walls, or through crawlspaces. The single player is largely an exercise in patience - fighting the same footsoldiers over and over again, and using the same basic weapons with the same problems (only sniper rifle benefitting from you aiming carefully with it). The cover system is implemented reasonably well - but it is a bit too clunky. Also - the cover system does not apply in multiplayer - so it doesn't matter if it's well done if it's absent. This game doesn't know what it wants to be. Gunplay is worse than CoD4 (a LOT worse) - ranking up wasn't implemented correctly (in a lot of cases in CoD4 you got the best guns at lower classes - mp5, ak47 from start etc), and unlocked cool features that kept the game interesting as you ranked up. In KZ2, you start with crap guns you won't go back to after you rank up, if you bother to stick with the game. I feel like I've wasted my money on this game - it was totally overhyped, and it's inferior to titles from last year. Also, the storyline is terrible, the settings for levels very repetitive, the range of game modes in MP is fine but none of them are fun - none are fast and furious, you'll do well by strategic camping - if you're good enough to play a game that rewards reactions and accuracy, you'll get penalised for that in this game. It's the PS3's Halo 3 - a dumbed down lowest common denominator shooter - but with a lot less variety in terms of weapons, a lot less speed in terms of gameplay, no local multiplayer on split screen. It's been done many times before and this game does it uninspired from start to finish. The characters are hard to like, one of them including profanities a couple of times in each sentence, although the main antagonist is easy to dislike he is not a memorable one. The control system is something I had trouble getting to grips with, and I felt there was a delay between my button press and the gun on-screen shooting. Frankly, I can't tell you what the story in number 2 is like, because I can't get over how mediocre the game mechanics are. Firstly, the aiming is slow and clunky, the crosshairs are near invisible, the particle effects (whilst pretty) make spotting anything in the entirely brown grey environment a pain, death happens randomly, enemies fluctuate between insane bullet sponges, to flimsy cardboard cutouts, the AI is a bit special, and the combat is just not fun. I put the aiming sensitivity to full, and it still takes several seconds to pan from one side of the screen to the other, which in a game where enemies can essentially one shot you, and the hit indicator is non-existent, makes surviving each fire fight tedious at best.
