There are so many gameplay features that are introduced to you over the first 5 hours but you still get some more surprise gameplay sections later in the game. Running up and over rooftops is smoother/faster than before making the free run/parkour very smooth, though there are still some issues in regards to getting your character to do what you want him to do resulting in unwanted jumps to your death. The combat is vastly improved on all fronts including unarmed combat allowing for exciting fights with the city guards. Enemies now have a basic health indicator above their heads to help you keep track of how much damage you have done to each one which is a godsend during bouts with numerous angry men. Grabbing opponents can now involve head butting and kicking. Different weapon types are better for fighting certain guards. You can now fight with your hidden blade! And air assassinations are extremely fun to pull off. There is so much to this game it would take more than the allotted review character count for me to discuss it all but I like to keep things brief. With that said onto the next topic.

No spoilers here with the story, but what I can say... coming from the super serious first entry, I was surprised to see/hear both serious themes and plenty of humourous scenes which on occasion had me laughing out loud. Gripping to the end but can be hard to keep track of character names and how many years have gone by since you have last seen them even with the ingame logbook entries. I wanted more all the time and the game kept on giving throughout my playthrough.

The graphics are lush and look very detailed, with lots of characters on the screen at the same time. This is where we see the games most noticeable negative, like the first entry, the game shows us that it is not very well optimised for the PS3's hardware. Screen tearing and framerate is a bit grating when you view the Italian cities and towns from above or run through some of the larger open areas with lots of people walking about their day. And not too distant objects like trees and fences can suddenly pop into view. While these problems do not make the game unplayable they are certainly a distraction at times. In the beginning scenes I did feel some character faces looked out of proportion, like a certain ladies mouth. But otherwise overall the cities looked just as breathtaking as the other cities in the first game.

I did not like the situation with DLC, the publishers took two sequences out of the late game and sold it to us as DLC. They even leave the gap in the sequence numbers to represent that you do not have the full game. I am pleased to say while both pieces of paid for content extend the game by a few hours and are just as entertaining as the previous 30 hours of the game experience (I 100% every game I play where possible) I consider the 'missing' story inconsequential.

Overall a phenomenal experience, only slightly marred by a few poor decisions by the publishers/developers. If I had a choice I would give this a well deserved 88/100 but Metacritic only allow User Scores out of 10... so 9/10 will have to do. Looking forward to playing AC: Brotherhood to 100% completion soon if ACII is anything to go by.

A great improvement over the first game. More variety and a better story overall. Great setting and representation of Italy during The Renaissance. Considered by most to be the best in the series.

We are starting our journey for revenge! But than, some interesting things happen. When game start, we are not an Assassin. We are stupid lmao. Than we take lessons from unexcepted peoples and thats also great. And, the most important thing of scenario, is the end. Thats really cool mate! Scenario feels better than first game. Because you are playing not copy paste missions lol.

First game I can only remember 4 characters. Altair, Mentor, Robert and our last target. But, this game also fix this thing. I can remember bunch of characters. Ezio, Ezio's Family, other Assassins, our enemies, our friends. Thats really good. We have living city, and they are great part of game. I am really glad... We can buy armours and weaopons for Ezio. Thats all? No, You can buy medicine pouchs, poison pouchs and etc. You can feel Ezio's development! You are watching Ezio, growing up to man.

Openworld and side missions are better than first game. You can feel, you are playing in a living city. Thives on roofs, escorts try to get some money. Everyone speaking each other and etc. Also, i like play with different cities. Thats cool! Openworld is really good.

Side missions? They are also great! You can collect Codex pages, Assassin Seals (for Altair's Armor), you can watch "The Truth" (and this video is really interesting.). For watch a video, you need unlock 20 files! You need find 20 glyphs, and then unlock them with puzzles. Also, we have a castle named Monteriggioni, and u are building shops, and defence systems. You are earning money from there. Also, if u buy a weapon or armor or etc., the money you earn is increasing. That's why it becomes more important to develop Ezio.

DESMOND CAN DO SOMETHING EXCEPT SLEEP, SPEAK AND **** ENTER THE ANIMUS! THATS GREAT! Desmond have 3 missions. Meh, he can do something. Thats good.

Combat System is more arcade than first game. But still good. You still need block sometimes etc. You can still feel this.

The same thing with combat system for parkour. You can feel you are climbing the towers, building. You need press 2-3 buttons still and this is great! Now? Game automatic climbing for you

I decided to rent the Ezio Collection and go back to beginnings (or close to it).

For me personally, playing Assassin’s Creed II feels outdated. It feels bad. Its a bad remaster where they didn’t update the game it just felt bad. I didn’t like the way the movement felt and there is nothing satisfying about the combat. I’m not going to comment on the story because I didn’t get far enough into the game for the story to get its hooks in me. After about an hour, I decided that I couldn’t play the game anymore.

I am going to give Odyssey a chance but its the last chance for Assassins Creed. If it doesn’t do anything for me. I might have to give up on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Which is too bad because I love history and I would love have games where I can experience certain time periods but I just haven’t been hooked by any of the games thus far.

The controls are a huge improvement and don't feel different from games like Black flag. The graphics hold up well for it's mildly aging state.
The music is great, some are memorable but most just fit in so well with the game it all just blends together in a big immersive experience.

The only complaint I have with the game is that it's too easy, especially if it isn't your first AC game. The combat is pretty much countering your opponent (which they made astronomically easier in this game) but it has enough other (albeit less effective) options available to keep it fun.

If you've never played AC but want to: Play this game
If you've played AC before but not this game; Play this game
This game is the reason there's a new AC every year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassin’s Creed II is an absolutely amazing game with a great storyline, graphics, and gameplay. The player is truly engrossed into the life of Ezio in Renaissance Italy and he is very well portrayed through the story. My major issue with the game is that the combat system once understood is extremely simple and always the same. Enemies always attack one by one and their attacks can be easily dodged and/or countered. Although easy at times, the game is an excellent must-play because of its thrilling story and variety of quests and missions. Expand

2009's Assassin's Creed 2 at the time was ground-breaking for the franchise; a major upgrade from the original game in terms of story, characters, visuals and gameplay, and added in a lot to the table the later Assassin's Creed games would end up using. 8 years later however, and the shine that the game once had has slowly been fading away.

One of the reasons why the game was praised so highly was because it's style of gameplay was still repetitively new to the major gaming audience at the time, and this game was one of the best we had. Unfortunately with more and more games adhering to this style in recent years (Horizon Zero Dawn, Mirrors Edge, Dying Light among others spring to mind). The technical issues with the game have begun to stand out more. Don't get me wrong, the game is still a ton of fun to play, and the controls are responsive enough, it's just that the gameplay at times can be stiff, clunky, and buggy. Examples include randomly jumping off of or completely missing a building for no reason, accidentally assassinating a group of civilians when you were specifically targeting guards (something they don't end up fixing until Assassin's Creed 3 in 2012, 3 years and 3 games after 2), guards taking a lifetime to attack, not countering an attack despite the fact that you pressed the right button combination perfectly, getting detected for no reason, I could go on and on, but that would be doing the game too much of a disservice, it still works fine, with a large list of ways to traverse the environments, kill guards and attempt missions with all of them (most of the time) being very gratifying.

The story for the game is something that I don't get the appeal for. The first hour of the story is great, with Ezio Auditore's family (who are Assassins, not known to a young Ezio at the time) being framed and hung by traitors (Who are Templars), being told really well, and the development between the characters leading up to the event I thought was really well done. However, once you kill the guy who killed your family (which happens far too early in the game), escape into the countryside and become an Assassin, the story begins to get slightly stale and very drawn out, becoming repetitive in the process. The only thing that saves it is the characters themselves. People like Leonardo Da Vinci, the thieves in the latter part of the game, and the Auditore family I thought to be amazing characters, with Ezio himself being one of the much more likeable characters in the Assassin's Creed franchise. However the extra side missions can be quite entertaining, from beating up cheating husbands, to executing assassination contracts (a bit too many of these but they mostly weren't a problem), to some pretty fun races, to going around and collecting the games' many collectables.

The visuals for 2009 standards are beautiful and really bring the world of Renaissance Italy to life and still hold up quite well 8 years later. Each city is distinct in look and feel, through it's architecture and inhabitants. from the bustling streets of Florence, to the murky marshlands of Romagna, to the canal-filled routes of Venice, they're all truly wonderful environments to explore.

All in all, whilst this game is still a great addition to the franchise, I personally don't think it holds the title of 'Best Assassin's Creed Game' anymore. And honestly, I don't think it ever did. I personally believe the other two games in the Ezio trilogy (Brotherhood and Revelations) are better than 2. However, that's not to take away from what the game did manage to achieve back then. It's still great, just not as good as people say it is anymore.

  3. Assassin's Creed II is such an improvement compared to its predecessor that it feels like a completely new game, rather than just a sequel. The varied missions really shine and the narrative is very effective, in all it's Forrest Gump-esque glory. Despite the quite slow start, Ezios adventures in beautiful Florence and Venice both look and feel amazing, and are well worth experiencing to the very end.
