Movie licensed titles are often less than satisfactory, but The Spiderwick Chronicles manages to pair decent gameplay with impressive production values.
-
While it’s far from perfect, The Spiderwick Chronicles makes for an enjoyable adventure, especially for young ones. Genre fans might find it a bit too simple, but those who aren’t above playing a “kid’s game” will find a surprisingly respectable adventure title.
-
If children don't become bored easily, this game could offer endless hours of exploration and problem-solving. However, the slow pace may become annoying for those in need of more action.
-
There is a big area to delve into, the music is great, and there is a lot of gameplay variety. There's something new to find around every corner, and that's something I can't say about enough games. The Chronicles could get younger players hooked on adventure gaming.

Official Playstation 2 Magazine UKAn enjoyable and enchanting adventure with a few flaws but fountains of fun, especially (but not exclusively) for kids. [Mar 2008, p.70]
-
Maxi Consolas (Portugal)It manages to take some advantage from the movie license. Its gameplay is accessible but interesting, with simple puzzles, platform jumps and combo based combats. It will please its target audience. [March 2008]
-
Inventory restrictions, abundance of backtracking and run of the mill production values make things pretty average.
-
If you're looking for a simple adventure game based on an enjoyable license, you'll probably enjoy this one.
-
Lacks a final polish, the combat and exploration can get repetitive, and the visuals are poor. However, there are a number of minor features which will please fans such as the entries in the Field Guide and Thimbletack’s tendency to rhyme.
-
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a standard licensed game -- it's got just enough content to make a virtual reenactment of the Human/Goblin war worthwhile for fans of the franchise.
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKCombat is totally hit and miss thanks to a crippling camera. [Apr 2008, p.112]
-
PSM3 Magazine UKThe combat's too easy, and the lead characters are horrible. [May 2008, p.78]
-
I was surprised at how simple and fun the fairy collection was, but the combat mechanics are a dull affair. Traipsing around in the walls isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and the game’s reliance on the field guide is a lazy design trick.

Jan 25, 2022It was a great game apart from the graphics on the Ps2. I had a lot of fun playing it in my childhood and even today it's still fun.
