Combined Assault isn’t a major leap forward for the series but this is still one of the most addictively fun military shooters available on the PS2.
-
This is a good looking, good sounding, good playing game that really pushes the limits of the PS2. There's never been a better time to be a Seal.
-
While Combined Assault may not be the leap forward we would like to see in the SOCOM series, it’s still a very solid title that’s worth checking out.
-
As it stands, it feels like the exact same multiplayer game that was offered a year ago. While a great deal of fun, this does little inspire existing players to jump from the equally entertaining SOCOM 3 to this latest game in the franchise.
-
It focuses on creating a lengthy and engaging campaign that works great as a single-player experience but can also be played cooperatively online. The result is a new SOCOM game that offers great value for returning SEALs and new recruits alike.
-
Combined Assault takes the already great multiplayer and adds a solid single-player component to the game. It’s a no-brainer.
-
Issues with teammates following commands and path finding are annoying, but overshadowed by solid action gameplay across near-limitless multiplayer.
-
While its online functionality has always been key to the series' success, Combined Assault rides on this as its single-player stuff simply isn't as strong as it has been in the past, which it's never really been known for anyway.
-
On what may have been its last foray on the aging PS2, the developers have continuously refined the SOCOM formula, and added fun connectivity with the PSP for good measure.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineIt's a great chunk of new maps and guns(and co-op!)for SOCOM fans, and it's as good a point as any for newcomers to try to penetrate the hardcore depths of the online community, no question. [Jan. 2007, p.80]
-
PSM MagazineEven though Combined Assault, which looks to be the last SOCOM game on the PS2, is showing signs of the console's aging hardware in the graphics and AI department, it's a hell of a game to go out with. [Feb. 2007, p.81]
-
While it’s not perfect and does have a few detracting flaws, Combined Assault is still one of the best SOCOM titles to date.
-
While there isn’t a lot of innovation since the last version, there is enough action—both new and old—to assure the series’ place as one of the premiere online shooters on the system.
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKHowever exhausted (or not) you are with SOCOM, this still packs in excellent atmosphere, tense engagements and a great sense of achievement against the odds. [Mar 2007]
-
Combined Assault continues the SOCOM tradition with the added bonus of a campaign that can be integrated with that of U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2 for the PSP.
-
SOCOM vets might have trouble justifying another purchase when Combined Assault is so similar to the previous game, but this is still a solid shooter as long as you’re content to play almost exclusively online.
-
More a SOCOM 3.5 rather than a full-blown sequel, Combined Assault both improves on what the franchise has always done well in its execution of multiplayer action, but highlights the shortcomings with the single player mode as a result.
-
If you're a fan of the series, it's a no-brainer, but if you've been turned off in the past by the focus on the multiplayer aspect, the buggy AI and questionable graphics aren't going to sell you very much.
