Metal Saga offers a genuinely open-ended role-playing experience on the console, with the ability to craft your adventure the way you see fit.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineThere's never a shortage of funny. It's refreshing to play an RPG that doesn't take itself too seriously. [May 2006, p.80]
-
The visuals will likely turn most off to what is quite honestly one of the most entertaining RPGs to hit the PS2, but a general lack of even casual steering towards the storyline does make the game seem aimless at times. Still, it's worth the adventure.
-
If you're not fully convinced or scared off, give it a rental and try it, particularly if you're a big fan of RPGs and want something a little more plain and old-school. Not everyone is going to like it, but those who do will probably love it.
-
With such a variety of things to do in Metal Saga, it's definitely worth a rental. You can spend as much time with it as you like. You can't say that about other RPGs.
-
Whether or not a player will like this game depends primarily on how they take to the humor, which is offbeat and playful, as well as his or her willingness to look beyond the game's lack of cohesive story.
-
The story is bland, but on the contrary, the writing is intelligent, well-localized and entertaining more often than not. The gameplay doesn't stray very far from the norm, but the content does.
-
The combat is certainly a bit repetitive, but you don't ever notice it much because it's also a lot of fun - and fun combat is key in a game about a bounty hunter.
-
It's got a lot of style, some depth and a lot of humor to it as you can see by the monsters and the characters themselves, but it's not a graphical or aural powerhouse, which might not appeal to everyone.
-
Metal Saga allows you the complete freedom to roam about in your vehicle of choice (bigass tank, dunebuggy, etc), equipped how you choose, with whomever you choose, to pretty much do whatever you want.
-
To wrap everything together for you, Metal Saga is definitely not your average RPG. The game features a cliché storyline, a nameless youngling as a main character, horrible graphics, an overused soundtrack and a nasty stream of currency.
-
It is not a bad RPG, and the tanks customization and combat add a nice touch of fun, but I would not classify this as a must have title for RPG fans.
-
Still, with the lack of a traditional approach to RPG direction and narrative, some RPG gamers might feel abandoned without a sense of accomplishment or purpose.
-
Boring graphics and irritating load times aside, Metal Saga is a half-way decent RPG. The charm lies in the bizarre enemies and the vehicular combat.
-
A unique and totally serviceable game, but the thing is that it just isn’t all that fun.
-
Metal Saga has the makings of a good role-playing game, but there's nothing to tie it all together.
-
Metal Saga won’t go down in history as one of the greatest RPGs ever made, but it’s a decent time-waster while you wait for something like, say, Final Fantasy XII.
-
While a good effort is made, nothing in the game can match the inspired lunacy of Metal Saga's opening minutes.
-
Game InformerMetal Saga is like a bastard mash-up of Mad Max and Lawrence of Arabia...tanks, deserts, and a post-apocalyptic future that manages to be super boring. [May 2006, p.101]
-
Metal Saga feels phoned in; Atlus' other vehicle-based RPG, Steambot Chronicles, is a better choice in every way possible.
-
Metal Saga has ... a few one-liners. It possesses no traits to make it stand out among the current role-playing crop - or even the bulk of RPGs from a decade ago. Let this clunker rust.
-
Edge MagazineIt’s all personality and no muscle, a prime victim for getting sand kicked in its face by the numerous RPG beefcakes currently swaggering around on PS2. [July 2006, p.92]
-
Equal parts chrome and rust, Metal Saga has what it needs to get you down the road, but forgets to include a map or destination. Lease, don’t buy.
-
PSM MagazineNot good. Simply, not good. [May 2006, p.82]
-
It's a shame that Metal Saga's high points -- the humor, the music, and its relative freedom -- are mired in disappointing production values and a concept that hasn't improved since the series' 8- and 16-bit days. It's droll and "different" -- but it's so different, it's the same.
-
Metal Saga fails to innovate with a lackluster presentation, terrible pacing, and a quest that really doesn't nail down a narrative.

Nov 1, 2021This game is one of my favourite, the very silly elements the series has, the music and Bounty hunting system are all making me crave for more. 10/10
