The game shines graphically. Capcom uses a clever mix of 3D textures and cel shading. The backgrounds are full of vivid colors, the explosions are clear and there are even some neat shadowing effects.
-
The simple lack of camera control during 3D levels, the rather unimaginative level designs, the sometimes annoying lock-on system (that Axl uses) are all factors in the game that simply drag it down.
-
Game InformerConsidering the highly frustrating boss battles and some irritating level designs, Mega Man X7 is likely to only appeal to the Blue Bomber's hardcore fans. [Nov. 2003, p.151]
-
GMR MagazineMega Man's bread and butter has always been the run-n-gun, and X7 continues that tradition admirably. [Nov 2003, p.84]
-
PSM MagazineThe multiple angles, 3D engine, and stellar visuals in Mega Man X7 do move the series forward, even if gameplay remains the same, which is okay in our book. [Nov 2003, p.41]
-
Everything X7 delivers is quality, although with an unshakable sense of 'been there many times before'.
-
We can only recommend the game to those with an undying patience or a passion for the series. Otherwise, there are plenty of other actioners out there that will provide far more fun than this.
-
When X7 ventures into new territory and starts tinkering with the tried-and-true Mega Man formula, things start to go wrong.
-
TotalGames.netIt does two things badly, when we'd rather it did one thing well.
-
Not as fun as previous Megaman titles. It feels like a rushed product that was not ready to be in the hands of gamers.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineOther than the stylish cel-shaded visuals, there's hardly anything new here... Seriously, I haven't seen camera problems this bad since the early days of PS1. [Nov 2003, p.138]
-
The added elements like Axel’s powers and the Reploids that need rescuing add something new and entertaining to the mix, but with such a lackluster presentation, most of that effort gets pushed aside by and otherwise bland experience.
-
Old school fun has never looked better, controlled more awkwardly (the shifting perspectives mess with the character control), sounded more outdated or sold for a fairer price than X7’s.
-
The shoddy camera system and somewhat unintuitive controls cause far too many headaches.
-
With uninspired level design and a lacking audio presentation, the game has little to offer hardcore fans of the series.
-
A huge amount of slowdown, even when there’s little going on, detracts from the overall simple shooting-n-slashing frenzy. A sloppy targeting system and the inability to strafe make the controls more of a pain than painless.
-
Mega Man X7 is a decent follow-up to the travesty of a game that was Mega Man X6, but it will still come off as a lacking action title for the gamers that have never been interested in the series. Nice try, Capcom.
-
GameNowRight away, you'll notice that the camera just doesn't work very well.. Promising but poorly designed 3D levels drag down the fun. [Nov. 2003, p.51]
-
Play MagazineThough the basic Mega Man tenets remain intact - play through level, kill boss, gain new ability - compared to modern games, many of the 3D levels and the accompanying gameplay feel like a freshman effort. [Oct 2003, p.68]
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyIt's just a mess whenever it thrusts you into confusing fully 3D levels. Here, the ugly, high-contrast backdrops look like a Lite-Brite melting underwater. [Nov 2003, p.186]
-
If the controls were tighter and the targeting system sharpened up, Mega Man X7 could have been a killer update. As-is, the game is a lethargic has-been.
-
If the stylish 3D graphics had been paired with a resolutely 2D game, with further time spent on level design, the end result could have been much greater than the uninspiring package present here. [Japan Import]
-
Cheat Code CentralMega Man X7 isn't even properly dubbed in English. I just can't handle that. What's up with such poor translations and acting? The story is so swollen in heady detail that it virtually detaches itself from the actual gameplay.
-
Now with Mega Man X7, the first X game to be released on the PS2, the trend continues it terrible decent into crap… and as a Mega Man-Super Fan, this succeeds in making me more depressed.
-
By and large it's a boring, scattershot attempt to bring MMX into the new millennium. The original "Mega Man X" is one of my favorite games ever -- and the flaccid 2D sections in this game aren't half as good as any of the levels in the original game. The 3D bits are more compelling, but still substandard.
-
But what ultimately tips the scales against Mega Man X7 is the series' continued insistence on being difficult to the point of absurdity. Three lives and no save points other than at the end of long levels just doesn't cut it.
-
netjakTo make matters worse, there are long loading times in the game. Mega Man X7 is one of those games where the player will be afraid to press the wrong button on the menu screens, because doing so will lead to much waiting and thumb-fiddling.
-
The 2D gameplay hits some bright spots but is hampered by the new, boring 3D sections. There isn't much to keep you playing other than to relive a shred of Mega Man gameplay in 3D.
-
The Zero series on the GBA trumps X7 with its tightened classic feel. The "Mega Man Legend" series (including Tron Bonne) worked the 3D controls much better. I'm all for change, but it has to come with improvement. The Blue Bomber has bombed out.
-
Absolutely unacceptable. MMX7 not only fails to be fun, but barely works right.
