Racing games today can't even capture a fraction of the experience that GT4 offered over 12 years ago. Whenever a racing game comes out I always find myself comparing it to GT4. This is the gold standard that developers should be striving to recreate.

    The peak of gran turismo.

Incredible car and track selection. Very content heavy, with lots of different classes of racing, from one-make races, endurance races, championships with high performance race cars, rally races, etc.
And driving physics that at the time of the game's release, were the best among console games.

Arguably the greatest racing game of all time.

    Graphics:
10/10. Absolutely amazing for the era, and although it's clearly aged they still look decent today.

    Gameplay:
9/10. Amazing physics, very fun, and definitely a good challenge. The only complaint is that the license tests are a bit tedious.

    UI:
10/10. Can't think of a single complaint here.

Gran Turismo 4 is.... more of the same... At least from a gameplay design perspective. It doesnt try to make anything revolutionary, besides the amount of cars and its details, which again, they are INCREDIBLE for a 2004 PS2 game. At least from a gameplay design perspective. It doesnt try to make anything revolutionary, besides the amount of cars and its details, which again, they are INCREDIBLE for a 2004 PS2 game. Im start to thinking Poliphony Digital is at the same level as Naughty Dog in terms of optimizing their games and make it run in a barebones hardware, if not, even BETTER. Gran Turismo 4 looks like a PS3 game and for a more or less early PS2 game this is just SO MUCH. Is a shame that the rest of the game isnt at the same level of quality.... like... any GT...
Well, i wouldnt start to launch the bombs for now, lets start talking about the good aspects, ok? Well, like i said before, unmatched graphics that still looks great, the handling of the cars are actually not that bad and are a great step up from GT2, and i like the new tyre heat system, since now is present in all of the races, not matter if they are endurance tests or not. You can also change the car spoil which is cool... a bit late, but cool anyway and like the other ones you have so many cars and now they are from many eras, even from 1880. A photo mode that it was probably ahead of its time, and some few more options that arent worth mentioning, but again, they are good enough. But now..... the bad.... oh man... get ready.
The main problem with this game is its unbalance nature, both for rewards and events distribution. The licenses, while repetitive, like GT2 are managable, so i wouldnt criticize this (excpet the coffee break, they should be more of it imo), but after beating all of the licenses and playing some races the problems begins... again... the same ones from Gran Turismo 2.... The grinding of this game at the beginning is horrible. At least if you dont buy a good car, you would struggle to beat some races, and the ones that you can beat they would give you nothing. But after all of that grind, i winning an special condition race, and guess what.... they gives you a 900HP car: the Caddillac... Yep, thats how broken this game is. With a Lancer Evolution 1 of i dont know, 200HP, i obtained one of the best cars of the game, from the beginning. The broken nature of this game doesnt end here, since there´s also events where you can sell cars for 250.000 money. i dont have a problem with this if it was more later in the game, but since all of the races gives me like 600-1000 money, i would expect a more balanced distribution. The events also have the same problem as GT2 and there are so many... MANY filler events that gives you pathetic rewards and repeats the same tracks over and over again, and yep, the return of the endurance races..... good lord..... good lord.... GOOODDDDDD LORRRRRRRRDDDDDDD 4 hours races? 8 hours races??? 24 FUC hours RACESSS!!!??? and there are not only one, but MULTIPLE of it!? OMG.... this game feels like a flanderization of the previous entries. The developers just doesnt seem to respect your time.
And the realistic nature of this game seems to be accounted only when the developers wanted to, because the AI of this game is horrible, not being able to notice you, being able to making unrealistic shortcuts without being penalized (like the one in Fuji Speedway or La Sattre) or simply starting to crash into walls to gain more speed and not recieving enough speed reduction or just damage your car. Even you can crash the AI car to push it into the sand and win the race more easily or using cars of 900 HP in 200-300 HP races that makes the game easy as hell, something GT2 fixed it.
Also, no racing modifications... WHY?! It was so cool to turn almost any of the 500 cars in GT2 into a better racing machine..... They waste the opportunity...
And for last, the B Spec mode breaks the game completely. Nothing more to say.
Overall, while i only played GT1, GT2, GT4 and GTPSP, of these four, GT4 is the worst i played of the bunch. While some flaws were also present in GT1 and GT2 as well, like the bad AI, this is a much more advance console, and the developers, again, seems to only make the game a showcase, more of a technical demo of what the PS2 can make, but without the overall design and fun, this is just another bland, repetitive racer with a lot of balance issues. Something i also defended GT1 and 2 was its soundtrack and GT4 has a forgettable soundtrack both its races and main menu, and is a shame to be honest, because i loved the soundtrack in previous games, especially 1 since is unique to any manufacturer and gives each one a personality (like Dodge having music more "suspense" than Honda with a more "happier" one since is basically the type of car that owns everyone)....
Need For Speed Most Wanted, that was released more or less the same year, eats this game as a pancake.

The fact that this masterpiece of a racing game that came out during the boom of the racing game genre, is ONE measly point away from being a universally acclaimed game critically, deservingly so, hurts me deeply. There is no better sim racing experience that has been duplicated by other game to this very day. You will not experience the feeling of winning a grueling 24 hour of Le Mans while taking turns with an AI driver nowhere else. You will only get 700+ vehicles if you played GT4, GT5, and GT6, or Forza Motorsport 7 and Horizon 4. There is no better menu atmosphere for a game like this one; there is no more iconic opening to a game, and no other game that lets you test drive the very first patented car ever: the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen. It is all here, in a PS2 DVD disc.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what I call a masterpiece of a racing game. Like Need for Speed Underground and Forza Motorsport 4, this is a bonified classic that will be enjoyed for generations to come. This is well worth coming back to when you want to play PS2.

I can definitely recommend that it is a must play or own game for the ps2 confidently however. GT4 feels like an improvement over gt3 however I'm not a fan of the music swap over. I suppose if you didn't like the choices available in gt3 more generic music was probably a good idea. That said, I don't believe the audio quality is as far as it could go. Sound effects seem rather bland still it's still that 1995 sound all race games have and the music is not in digital I presume. Just take a listen to the quality of need for speed underground released much earlier and you can see the quality could be better. The options in this game are fantastic however I'm still disappointed more high speed racers aren't available (default) as I prefer going right into arcade mode and racing. I don't want to do sim mode and unlock everything and I don't even know if that's possible because I'm not willing to make this game such a time sink. I score high points to this game for minimal load times and for excellent steering wheel feel. I would like to point out though that in the ps2 library I do feel the flatout series nailed steering wheel feel even better than gt4. I can't complain about the feel however of all ps2 racing games to date that I've played these are the only two series I feel the wheel simulation was worth the purchase. Imo flatout nailed the feel of the terrain and crashes much better (more immersive). With respect to that comparison, gt4 terrain and turns still feel a bit floaty even with a force feedback wheel from where I feel they would be optimal. Graphically it's decent but considering I have an HDTV and I've changed options to 1080p in game with 16:9 aspect it really doesn't seem what one would expect. All in all I find this game really decent but as I mentioned some other race games did better jobs in different areas. That still leaves room for improvement doesn't it, and why I rate this game as 8/10. It's a massive game with lots of choice but even with all those options it didn't rank as my highest scoring race game on the system. With its high quality though it is a game that will stay on my personal library and I highly recommend it to ps2 fans or anyone still into old school. Expand

I believe it is quite simply the layout that makes this game so special. The world map containing every dealership, race course and race event is a fantastic idea and I am still yet to see a game layout that can live up to it. Of course though, a game is not all about the layout, it's about actual gameplay, which GT4 also nails. It was comfortably the most advanced racing game for a number of years and got the very best out of an ageing console. Another thing I love about this game is the rate of progression and it's sheer length. A lot of racing games allow you to jump into some of the world's fastest cars almost right from the off, whereas others take so long before you get to drive anything good that it almost takes the fun out of it. GT4 gets the balance perfect. The way you have to start by earning all of your racing licenses and gradually working your way up to unlock different types of car for different types of races is something that makes this game amazing. It is a game that is incredibly challenging to complete to 100% and that is another reason why I love it so much. Easily the best game I've ever played. A solid 10/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ---THIS IS MY OPINION, IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT I HAVE TO SAY, THEN, DON'T BOTHER---

Overrated, that's all i got to say.

    Graphics: 8/10

The graphics look gorgeous considering its a game from 2005, beatiful models and tracks considering its a PS2. However, the lack of a cockpit camera its really a minus, and doesn't help that the game boasts 1080i when it reality its just a upscaling. Argh.

    Story/Career Mode 2/10

The game boasts a lot of cars... So?. The game is extremely tedious, and repeating events over and over isn't fun, its just tedious. When you do get to the good stuff, it still feels rather unearned, given you are forced to grind your way through the game. It doesn't help (again) that you have to start with some ***** coupe that is so slow even my mum could drive faster. Another thing that takes away point is that until you own the car you can't drive the car which is a joke.

    Gameplay 6/10

A lot of fun, but its still pretty flawed. The game contains 0 collision detection which is a joke for a simulation game. The game contains awful engine noises, that while something minor, gets grating after a while. The game is also contains the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which, let me talk to Polyphony Digital, who is going to bother with such a task?!. Regardless, the physics are great for a PS2 game and the racing is still up there. Another thing is that feels a bit pad out at times, with multiple Daihatsus (yay... i guess?).

OVERALL: A really fun game when you get fast cars. Otherwise, one giant borefest and a dissapointment.

    RATING: 5/10

Gran Turismo 4 is the recipe Polyphony Digital and Sony should stick to, no deviation just refinement. This game had it all including 54 tracks (to date the most tracks of any Gran Turismo game), 721 cars and a career mode that is insanely huge and challenging. I never completed this game which is not a criticism, just a testament to how large the game is. The multiplayer was also great with the car selection being half the fun going through 80 manufacturers to pick the best car.

The only problem I had with this game when it came out was its lack of damage, which if included would've made the game a perfect console racer in its day, instead of the only the best. It is still enjoyable to return to approaching a decade after its release which for a car game is testament to the vastness that is Gran Turismo 4.

One more thing, there are hardy people who would race for 24h consecutively (unless they don't got a life) Even though there's b-spec, that's kinda boring to let the AI win for you. Especially considering that Endurance races still feature 5 ops to contend with. Games like TD LeMans (PSX) is an example of a gaming/racing challenge despite it's low graphics and soundtrack. Graphics, realistic driving, fast cars, it's brilliant, but it would be better if it didn't go on for so long as it gets boring after a while (a very long while) that shows how long this game goes on for. One of the best points is that you can put a memory stick into the PS2s USB socket and take pictures of your cars and put them on your mms.

Apart from more new cars being available, this is a step back in every respect rom gran Turismo 3. The courses are narrower, pointlessly winding, there is more sand, you can't turn off tire wear, more features are locked, there are no cheat codes...I give this an F. I can just image the lead GT4 programmer at his desk one friday, who is given the task to make the races challenging. And all that asshole comes up with is speed- reducing penalties for hiting walls and other cars- and if other cars hit you (of which they don't get a penalty). you could be going as slow as 20mph when you hit the wall, but there's the penalty- ARRGH! The size of the game, as always, is definately enough to keep you playing for a good long time and the graphics are top-notch. But for a game that is so obcessed with being the ultimate driving simulator, you'd think they would've included realistic crashes, rather than bouncing off cars/barriers like a souped-up bumper car. That said, it's still a cracking game.
