Is it disappointing that units in Warhammer 40,000 are so simple in presentation? Sure, especially when you consider how monotone many of the "apocalyptic" environments are. But given the choice between a game like this an a major studio producing a Warhammer game that fails to even understand where the real appeal of Warhammer lies, I'll take a game like Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon any time.

Gameplay-wise, the mechanics are those of Panzer Corps but the details have been crafted and changed in order to better use the wide variety of units included in the game. For the fans of the saga this is a must buy; but bear in mind that an interest in strategy is needed in order to enjoy this title at full potential.

Generally speaking, Panzer Corps is a better game, but Warhammer 40K nerds will be able to look past the balance problems and enjoy one of the few true wargames based on the GW lore.

Hex-based strategy games aren't dead after all. Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon is quite faithful to the license and features a huge number of units, which is great news for everyone who loves the Warhammer universe. However, there are also many faults that will hinder the experience. These include poor tutorial, and lack of documentation, lackluster story and missing movement animations.

Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon is a good turn-based strategy experience, but in the future Slitherine should try to innovate a little more and introduce more unique mechanics that suit the nature of the universe it is working with.

It's quite similar to Panzer Corps but it's still fun to hit the orcs and their boss Ghazghkull Thraka right between the horns.

Armageddon is a game for those who see only war in the darkness of the distant future. Even if the developers decide to mimic Panzer Corps by releasing new campaigns and playable factions, they won’t be able to attract new players to the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

A bit skinny for a wargame. I can’t deny that I’ve missed getting stressed about logistics or big picture strategy, and it certainly hasn’t set my heart aflutter in the way that I hoped a Warhammer wargame would. But there aren’t very many wargames that are this easy to dip into, either. It’s got a focus and simplicity that’s often lacking elsewhere, and it could be indispensable for anyone looking to dip their toes into the genre.

Warhammer 40,000 : Armageddon is a remarkable adaptation of the rules of Warhammer 40K but is quite overshadowed by its poor technical quality and its inability to show all the interesting information on screen. This game will be very attractive for lovers of Games Workshop's products but it will be almost unnoticed by the rest of strategy gamers.

A game you should really consider if you are into Warhammer 40.000 and hardcore turn based strategy. It doesn't come without flaws and a nasty difficulty level, but it delivers some interesting strategic fun.

Warhammer 40K: Armageddon is a simplified Panzer Corps in a classic and beloved sci-fi world. Hardcore strategy fans may invest in a fair price drop.

A deep strategy game for the true lovers of tactics and planning, seasoned with the noble license by Games Workshop. However, is a bit too classy to excite even those who aren't big fans of wargames.

Far too shallow to hold your attention for long. [March 2015, p.92]

The user interface could do with an overhaul, but this is a solid enough strategy game with tons of cool units from Warhammer 40,000.

For a full-price game, though, Wahammer 40K: Armageddon feels lacklustre and slightly cheap, more of a re-skin of Panzer Corps than its own beast, and lacking the sense of grandeur that the setting requires. There’s a great turn-based 40K out there somewhere, but this isn’t it.

For now though, unless you're desperately aching to play a new turn-based 40k wargame - which is entirely understandable given how long it's been since the last one - we'd advise waiting on the outcome of one or two necessary patches before joining the fray.

Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon is a title that feels like it’s about 10 years older than it actually is. In the 40K universe, I’m pretty sure people get executed for failing their duties as spectacularly as this.

Game is basic TBS strategy in line with the classic panzer general.

Very good conversion of the Panzer Corps series into Wh40k universe.
Game is basic TBS strategy in line with the classic panzer general.

Very good conversion of the Panzer Corps series into Wh40k universe. There are the traditional elements of core force which gains experience and carries on from scenario to scenario in the campaign. Units are divided to different groups (infantry, vehicles, tanks, artillery, air etc) each of which have tens of different units that you can upgrade as the campaign progress.

New things (apart from the setting and units) are that each unit can have multiple weapons with different stats. Also attack usually lead to counterattack, which gives more weight to attack range (no counterattack if target is out of range). Units have health and are very varied on how many individuals there are in the unit (the unit strength counter). For example goblins can have as much as 40 unit strength when tanks usually have 5.

Game feels much more fluid than Panzer Corps and the graphics have been improved a bit. Very enjoyable gameplay experience so far.

Minor complaints come from some missing UI elements. What is morale? How many points does reinforcement of unit take? How far can a unit see (there is no unit stat to tell this)?

The graphics and sound are worse than most iOS games, and the gameplay is simplistic turn based strategy. If it plays like this on the iPad I would score if 5/10 but on a modern PC this is a bit of a joke, Only die hard 40K gamers, desperate for a gaming fix will enjoy it. Full Review »

This was never going to break new barriers in gaming, however it uses a solid engine and battle mechanic. Sounds well adapted. Can only play as IG which stalls the the game somewhat, but this is a very easy to mod game and there will be a large number of mods very soon to expand the races. Slow turn-based gameplay that reflects the tabletop well. A welcome addition to the universe and one that harks back to Epic 40k. Not the role-playing games of Chaos gate, but it was never going to be. Does everything it says on the tin. Full Review »
