This game nails art style and sound design. It is weaker on combat mechanics. For a game that leans into the fluid block/counter/attack combat it needs work. I never got the hang of counters even though I would block at the right time and attack back. Most of the time it would just do a normal attack. The game also drags during the middle to later half. Nettes Spiel. Es hat echt viel Spaß gemacht. Mehr davon! Nicht zu lang, nicht zu kurz. Genau richtig! Relativ repetetiv, dahe abwechslungsarm.

Expand

TREK TO YOMI has white-dark color film style , it is a 2.5D sword combat game but I feel uncomfortable at combo . somehow I just use ↑left left right + F , still I don't remember any combo . what a waste .

Trek To Yomi is an indie game with character and style clearly visible from trailers and screenshots that drew me in. The actual game itself is a rather mixed bag, however.

The graphics are Yomi’s selling point. Much has been touted about the Kurosawa influence, yet to most of us it’s just a black and white Samurai game. In cut-scenes the graphics are impressive with a hint of simplicity, whilst in action scenes things become more dramatic as you witness the elements alongside incidents such as fire and destruction. These make for engaging backdrops for the action to take place.

The Yomi side of it, however, suffers for this. The foggy and puzzling supernatural backdrops I found to be less immersive and the spectres more annoying than striking.

The gameplay of Yomi is where you expect the bread and butter to be as a Samurai game, but it’s actually the game’s weakest point. The combat is inconsistent at best and downright cheap at worst. It can be satisfying to slice through opponents, yet the controls I found to be temperamental in their responsiveness and combos couldn’t be executed consistently. Most combat boiled down to a Wild West style quick-draw, with whoever gets the first hit usually being the winner as the combat stun-locks you into defeat. A special mention goes to the bullcrap final boss who does exactly this with a ridiculously long combo.

Basically, most of the game sees you running through corridors and killing enemies in your way. I did find a few times where I needed to reload as I got stuck on the environment and some puzzles were more annoying than challenging.

Then again, Yomi isn’t marketed as an action game. It’s a Kurosawa film in game form. The story is a fairly simplistic tale of student-master-love-interest triangulation. The Yomi aspect brings in a supernatural element later in the game but I didn’t think this added much worthwhile. It was the most tedious part of the game for me and dragged on too long as you navigated clichés of facing up to your past killings and failure to protect the one you love. There’s nothing wrong with the story, but nothing remarkable either.

Overall, Trek to Yomi is a game worth playing with some caveats. It’s neither a cinematic nor a gameplay masterpiece. I applaud it for trying something a bit different and with more focus on improving the combat it could be quite a gem of a game. Game Pass makes it much more recommendable.

The game is stunning with great music, but the combat mechanics are so bad...
Animations are very limited (and full of bugs...), combos are awful, and the combats are so boring after just a couple of hours...

Visually beautiful but with poorly implemented combat gameplay that is noticeable when facing various enemies using the awful block and counter system. A pity.

Authentic visual filter, atmospheric sound and music, great Japanese voice acting. Battles and fighting could be improved a little bit for a better experience.

But after few hours I was really frustrated and I had enough of some of art design choices. For example black bars on top and bottom were so big that everything in the center was cramped and SHOULD be big enough and clarified enough to see what it's going on. But very often framing of the camera was so unnecessarily zoomed out from the character that I seriously couldn't see a thing! Very often enemies or different collectibles were just imperceptible on a black and white background. Combat was very frustrating and unresponsive, why can't I parry the attack directly when enemy is attacking? I need to press block button before enemy is about to attack, otherwise I'll get hit. Such frustrating moments when you are surrounded by enemies and some of them are kinda "in the background"... Why? So many times I wanted to hit someone but it turned out that he wasn't fighting yet... He was just waiting and meanwhile I was hit in the back by another enemy... Bosses are so annoying and unnecessarily overpowered - mainly due to combat being so unresponsive and slow. Main plot was really interesting but I would rather prefer much down to earth story without demons or ghosts. It's hard to like the main character because he's lacking of any emotions... He is just doing what his master is telling him to do... He will stay with his love only because of his master? Such a bs. Although game luckily was short and didn't bore me so much. I could only recommend this game if you are a big fan of Japanese stylistic games... But I much rather recommend Onimusha instead of Trek To Yomi. Expand

One of the most ''MEH'' games i've ever played. Story isn't deep, gameplay is repetitive, puzzles are easy af, boss fights are OK. There are mutliple endings i've ended with the evil one and if not for it i might've given a lower score only that ending is nice.

It's a fact that the black and white treatment helps the game a lot. In the end, it's a nice little one-shot that works more as an atmospheric experience than a game. Especially if you're into samurai and old movies. [Issue#320]

Trek to Yomi is a game with great promise that, unfortunately, fails to live up to expectations. Despite this, it also succeeds in areas where most games fail. Few games can lay claim to this level of stylistic fidelity. However, its shortcomings are too vast and all-encompassing to ignore. It feels like a game that tries desperately to be more than it is, to have more nuance, more to say. Unfortunately, it's not just the color scheme that's black and white.

Trek to Yomi’s opening chapter really builds expectation for what will follow, but what does follow doesn’t live up to that promise. It’s a gorgeous game to watch, but the gameplay simply falls short of matching the quality of the visuals.
