Even though many will say this is a Uncharted rip off, it is really well executed. It changes the classical gameplay to a more Uncharted/Resident Evil type, but keep the climbing Lara must do, maintaining that Tomb Raider feel.

I'd break it down this way:

About as much of a gaming experience as the original Dragons Lair for Amiga. Mostly a bunch of quick time events is used to let you do things and the camera is locked. Seems like they really rather wanted to make another Tomb Raider movie, but were forced to make a "game".

Visually stunning and great concept that fell through on execution. The characters are flat, the control and camera angles are pretty poor. It's not so much as you're playing a game as trying to navigate through a poorly designed mini game in between cut scenes.

What an experience! This is a really good game!!!!! Story amazing, graphics really nice, good mechanics, good puzzles with the right difficulty and a lot of variety in the game. Just fantastic!

This game is definitely one of the best. The story, the graphics, and the physics of the game were done very well. The graphics are the best I've seen on my mediocre laptop. The way Lara scales the environment is so fun to play with, and makes it feel almost open world, and makes me excited for future titles. Cons: The combat for me left something to be desired; even on easy difficulty death becomes tedious, and there are enemies everyone, so much so that it feels untrue to the story and just annoying. Also the stealth part of the games had the potential to be great, but they probably didn't design the game with stealth in mind. 8/10 would play again. Expand

It played in 2022 for ~3 hours - it seems like an absolutely mediocre product with no distinct features, the game hasn't aged well that's for sure
I wouldn't want to waste my time on something like this, quite surprised that it has such a high rating here.

I don't know how to start! It had been a long time since I sat down and played a game continuously for three days until it was finished; however, this game brought me back the experience of not being able to exit or minimize a game for up until its end and the taste of the good old gaming days!!! I'm a student right now and as a result, I don't have time to be a hardcore gamer (which I used to be!!!) but, I gave myself a bit of a break because I had just finished my exams. Now, I didn't expect to stick to my PC for three days but this game, the feel of it, its every bit of content didn't allow me to leave the damn chair! The main story line was exactly what you would expect from these kind of games; but the thing that kept me looking at the freaking screen was not that! It was the atmosphere, the events, the intensity and how fast everything happened! You'll feel like YOU are in there and YOU are trying to survive playing this game!!! I don't know how to make one of those pros/cons tables but I can give you this: "THIS GAME IS WORTH EVERY PENNY YOU PUT INTO IT!" And before I forget, I have to say that the graphics of this game look unbelievably gorgeous and have in your minds that this is being said by a person who has played Crysis 1,2&3, Witcher 1,2&3, Dragon age inquisition (and the others!) , Battlefield 3&4, many CODs!, the whole total war series (including Rome 2 and shogun!) and many others which I don't have in mind right now!!!!! I have used every way I know to tell you that this is a must buy for any gamer!!! There's a lot to say but to sum it up I have to say, JUST BUY IT or as Shia Labeouf puts it JUST DO IT!!!

    Farshadios out...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tomb Raider oldukça keyifli bir Aksiyon-Macera oyunu. Oyunda Lara Croft isimli bir arkeologu kontrol ediyoruz. Hikayesinden bahsedeyim biraz. Lara, Sam'i Mathias'ın elinden kurtarmayı başarır. Reyes ve Jonah, Lara'yı Sam'in kaçırıldığı yere götürür ve Lara'nın Sam'i kurtaracağı sırada düşmanları oyalayacaklarını söyler. Expand

It is the tenth title in the Tomb Raider franchise, and operates as a reboot that reconstructs the origins of Lara Croft. In the beginning the first hour is a sequence of carefully scripted set-pieces and, yes, a cavalcade of button-mashing QTEs. But it's all for the sake of character development, and Tomb Raider is so good at this that you'll forgive the strict direction especially after the game opens out past the 60-minute mark and lets you loose on the island. Camilla Luddington's performance as Croft is impressively convincing, and throughout this adventure you'll really feel for Lara she is just not having a good time out there. It is a compelling reading of the character; we see Lara's vulnerability, but she is never disempowered, and never less than totally capable in extreme danger.
Gameplay: Tomb Raider is presented in third-person perspective. Players take control of the series lead character Lara Croft. The game uses an interconnected hub-and-spoke model that combines action-adventure, exploration, and survival mechanics.[9] Players can traverse between the camps and across the island using footpaths, improvised or already-available ziplines and climbable tracks. Many of the players' moves are carried over from the previous games created by Crystal Dynamics, with some tweaks added, such as incorporating elements of stealth gameplay. Quick time events are scattered at regular intervals throughout the game, often appearing at crucial or fast-moving points in the game's plot, such as extracting a shard of metal, and escaping a collapsing cave.
Story: This game is set on Yamatai, a fictional lost island in the Dragon's Triangle off the coast of Japan. The island and the kingdom that once existed there—is shrouded in mystery, given its reputation for fearsome storms and shipwrecks that litter its coastline. Yamatai was once ruled by a queen named Himiko, known by her honorific title of Sun Queen who, according to legend, was blessed with shamanistic powers that enabled her to control the weather. Very little is known about Yamatai's history in the time since Himiko's death, other than that the island's infamy was established shortly thereafter. In exploring the island, the player may find evidence that among others Portuguese traders, United States Marines, and a Japanese military project were all stranded on Yamatai at various points throughout history. At the start of the game, the island is populated exclusively by the Solarii Brotherhood, a violent cult of criminals, mercenaries, and shipwreck survivors. The Solarii Brotherhood has established its own society based on the worship of Himiko, complete with a social structure and laws, with their exact purpose and intentions being explored throughout the story.
Character: The player takes on the role of Lara Croft, a young and ambitious archaeology graduate whose theories on the location of the lost kingdom of Yamatai have convinced the Nishimura family descendants from the people of Yamatai themselves to fund an expedition in search of the kingdom. The expedition is led by Dr. James Whitman, a celebrity archaeologist who has fallen on hard times.

Tomb Raider has a lot of flaws with its story and narrative.Narrative has a general unconsistency, and story starts like a action-survival game in which you're gonna have limited ammo, feel more unsafe, and need to go under the radar of the enemies. But after finding your first pistol, you can kill every enemy without hesitation. And characters are also not memorable at all. But eveything except story, narrative and characters are greatly well-done. Controls, atmosphere, graphics, -for 2013- satisfying gameplay etc. Tomb Raider could've been one of my favourite games of all time if the story, narrative and characters were memorable enough.

The Tombs are cool for the most part but unfortunately there aren't many of them. However, there are some open world elements, you can explore the island for secrets and collectibles, which I enjoyed.

Now the plot, it's just mediocre. It has some fantastic action-oriented moments, but for most of the time I didn't find myself attached to the story or the characters, and I didn't like the main villain.

Also there are way too many Quick Time Events, and combined with the linear main story, there's no replay-ability, some sections are straight up exhausting to go through.

Lara Croft carries this game, she is a great female protagonist and goes though some messed up things, and she's easily the highlight of the game.

Tomb Raider is one of those rare games that accomplishes both. I'd like to start off by saying I'm no fan of the Tomb Raider series. I was always ambivalent to the series. I have never played one all the way through and never found any of them all that compelling that is until now.

It is rare that I come across a game with such a well-written story and such rich character development. Square Enix really outdid themselves this time. I have always been a huge fan of video games in general, but always wished they would focus more on good writing and character development something sorely lacking in a vast majority of games today. This game really came through in this department, and I feel I really understand the character of Lara Croft so much better now. It has drawn me into the mythos that I was so disinterested in before. I certainly cannot wait for future titles, and hope this game ends up where it belongs holding a place in history as one of the better examples of great story, writing, and character development in video games and perhaps even sparks a renaissance of good writing that this industry so badly needs.

As far as gameplay, graphics, sound, and all the other aspects of what makes a game good or great Tomb Raider really hits the mark on each of these. The exceptional combination of each of these aspects of the game only help to support the real thrill here and that's being along for the ride of this great adventure with Lara and her crew. It really feels like I'm playing a movie but almost never do I feel like I'm doing so on rails. I feel in constant control, and always in a manner where my decisions decide the fate of Lara and her crew members. This is what a game should be. Highly Recommended!

I was personally anticipating Tomb Raider to be a mediocre copy of an Uncharted game, and I don’t think that my inaccuracy has ever brought me this much happiness. In fact, comparing this with Uncharted is rather silly, because the similarities between the two games end rather quickly. Tomb Raider is its own game with its own unique features. The gameplay is everything I could’ve asked for, and more. You gain XP and purchase skills that are divided into three different branches, or “skill trees”. There are many different ways to gather resources, which allow you to upgrade the 4 weapons Lara finds throughout her journey, each of which have unique advantages in combat. In addition, challenges and collectables are introduced with rewarding incentives, which will encourage you to dive into these fun optional features. While the characters may not have these remarkably appealing personalities, Crystal Dynamics gave us an incredibly strong protagonist. Lara Croft is a clever and tough woman who plays the “hero role” perfectly. Character detail and animations are nearly lifelike and the cut-scenes are cinematically brilliant. So far, many of the releases this year has disappointed me, but Tomb Raider was a friggin’ home run. My game of the year for 2013 may have already arrived. Expand

Some people say that they have to go through many cutscenes in order to play but the story is what kept me going. Perhaps that is why the game has so little replay value and is quite short. I don't mind. I quote Hilary Cooper "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away". Rarely have I seen more beautiful world design, animation, facial animation, voice acting and graphics. I've definitively never seen all that in one game. Lara is simply gorgeous because she is no longer solely a sex symbol. In terms of character development she can be compared to Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2. However you may ask if it's not the actual gameplay that counts, what not just watch the cutscenes? You could but you would never reach the level of immersion the game has to offer, it wouldn't feel like an adventure if you don't explore. Besides the gameplay is a lot of fun, it just doesn't stand on it's own. As for the price, if 50 euros scare you then you can often get 50% off on Steam. Totally worth it. Expand

I believe this game has some major problems. First things first: this is not a Tomb Raider game. Not just because this is a reboot. That would be fine. First things first: this is not a Tomb Raider game. Not just because this is a reboot. That would be fine. Problem is, this game has a completely different idea behind it. The previous games were about exploration, a sense of danger and wonder, and they played it straight: Lara was a female Indiana Jones able to walk in and out of every sort of adventure, and you got the sense that she, in fact, did that every day. The necessary tension to keep the game interesting came from the gameplay: limited life, limited ammo, scarce ammunition for most weapons. The puzzles were interesting and challenging, set in beautiful environments.
Some of these elements kind of survive in this reboot, some do not. The puzzles are absolutely, boringly easy, and you also get an "highlight the objects I need" function, just in case. Some environments are still noteworthy, but as good as the graphics may be they fail to reach the same charisma of games like "the last revelation" or the recent remake of the original, and not even the platform elements remain intact. The "tombs" look like they were thrown in at the last moment just to be consistent with the name, and they usually contain one room with a single easy puzzle and a box. That's it. Now, I remember those challenging times when I did a few too many mistakes and kept going on, only to find myself with 1/4 of my life and 0 medkits in the old games. And getting past those moments was a rewarding experience. Now there is ammo everywhere and life regenerates (STOP TAKING THE GAME OUT OF MY GAMES). While the previous games created tension trough gameplay, this game tries to create tension mostly trough narrative. This is another mistake, as games are not supposed to be movies, but it could still work. However, they didn't play that right. If you want to create tension trough narrative, then the *spectator* (which should be a player, amirait?) should feel that there is something at stake, e.g. Lara's life. But Lara keeps being pierced, falling, and getting her feet in a bear trap, and falling, beaten, and then she just gets up and keeps on going! If you can see the main character basically brushing off almost everything that happens to her, then the tension is gone, no matter how much blood you want to show. Being too violent in this case spoils the effect, working against suspension of disbelief when the character just keeps on going. Later on in the game she is suddenly in need of medical assistance (even tough having been trough much worse), but the problem is solved is such an hasty way to make it as believable as the good ol insta-heal kits. But we accepted those kits in terms of gameplay, because it was in fact a different genre! Now, there were two road they could have taken: either go with the original formula, a female indy with over the top abilities we just take for granted, which does happily allow for much less realism, or a girl with little or no training except an archeology PhD that learns and refines her skills on the ground, forced to survive in a realistic and unforgiving environment. You would see her getting around clumsily at fist and gaining confidence trough her adventure. They obviously tried the latter approach, but excessive violence and a disempowered gamplay takes this game off the mark, not to mention how the added realism makes all the silly an unrealistic elements stand out, and there is very little character progression. Shes' already awesome to begin with, she just looks more insecure, again spoiling the tension. There is nothing at stake. Those two approaches are very different and you can't apply them both at the same time.
Oh, I almost forgot: quick time events. Quick time events are a stupid excuse to make a long cinematic look like you're still interacting with a videogame. I'm fine with long cinematics, I hate "press E very fast to make the cinematic go on!!!". The number of too many QTE in your game is 1.
It's not an exceedingly bad game tough, by all means buy it if you find a copy under 5 bucks, as there is much, much worse out there, but even if you're fine with it not being actually a tomb raider game, this is still a missed occasion.

What's keeping it from being perfect:
    - overused QTEs in the first hour of the game,
    - lack of replay value: story is the main point of this game, once you know it and done all the puzzles it's really no point in playing it again,
    - lack of difficulty even on Hard mode, after the first hour you pretty much steamroll everyone as you go,
    - they confuse Lara Croft with John Rambo at times, you are supposed to kill dozens of enemies in a single area, wave after wave (and it's hilariously easy even on Hard),
    - not enough stealth elements (they seem to prefer the guns blazing approach).

In the end, it's 10-15 hours of a really well done game and by all means worth the 15-20$ price tag on sale these days.

The new cover system is the most impressive of the whole game. Lara will automatically crouch down near or stand up depending on the cover you intend to use. This was such a breath of fresh air since I always hated that stick to the wall mechanic other TPS have. There are four weapon slots, on hard mode I did need to switch between at least three of those slots to survive. Enemies do try to flush you out of cover throwing Molotov 's or charging you. There are animals in the game that you can hunt for extra XP. They have no other purpose, don't expect to have a meter showing how hungry you are or use the skin of animals for other purposes. QTE's plaque the first hour or two of the game. On the PC, devs fail to tell you beforehand what button correlates with which QTE icon. This game is very linear, only reason to explore would be to obtain all the relics, documents, GPS caches, tombs, along with the in-game challenges. The tombs are not very mind puzzling like old Tomb Raider games and are incredibly short to do. There is no epic boss fight at the end, it's just littered with QTE's. If you can look past the QTE's this is a great modern day TPS gaming experience. Expand

Tomb Raider is a superb action adventure! I never expected to be this impressed by it but it is a very well made and balanced 3rd person action title. I really think i prefer this to Uncharted as well it has a more serious and dramatic tone to it. The atmosphere the game creates really sucks you in and leaves you in awe at every cut scene especially on PC. Well worth everyone's money.

You are playing Lara Croft before she became the legend that we know today, she is just a young woman who is searching for legendary myth with her crew-friends, unfortunately for her a storm hit their ship and everyone is stucked on an unknown island and to make it worse there are people in the island, very dangerous people that will kill anything in their sight. Lara needs to learn how to hunt, how to kill and how to survive on this island. this is where the legendary Lara Croft is born and you are going to remember the moments, the hardship that Lara is going to endure. This is the first game that I ever cared about keeping the main character alive cause if you don't you will witness many gruesome deaths that even the mortal kombat can't be compared to. If you think about buying it don't think just buy, and remember it isn't the multiplayer that makes this game amazing its the single-player campaign that you will remember for a very long time. Even though Tomb Raider can't seem to make up its mind on what kind of game it wants to be, it remains the kind of game that kept me up way too late night after night (and not because of Lara's chest), so it's at the very least a good one.

The combat system isn't terrible but neither is it terribly unique. Minus the bow combat, I could boot up Max Payne 3 for something significantly

The combat system isn't terrible but neither is it terribly unique. Minus the bow combat, I could boot up Max Payne 3 for something significantly better. The stealth events are much more interesting, allowing you to slowly pick off your enemies from afar or up close. This carries a great deal of the gameplay, but it feels much more linear and carried than a game like Dishonored, which will drop you off in a sandbox filled with your soon-to-be-victims and a variety of ways with which to dispatch them or letting you sneak past them entirely. With this game, you're given a few interesting options and pretty much have to massacre everyone in your way to get by most of the time.

The game is at its strongest when you're climbing, swinging, and exploding your way through the environment. Movement in the game really is quite enjoyable, when it occurs, but that brings me to my next point. Raiding tombs is not a highlight of the main story rather, it is offered as an auxilliary objective (which you should nab at every possible opportunity). It's disappointing that in a game whose name very clearly implies the desecration of sacred burial ground, you will only really be doing so when you have time to take a break from generic third-person-shooter action. Instead of offering a plethora of crypts full of railings, walls, and ropes with which to make our way about, most of these aspects are placed in the outside world where I really don't feel like they fulfill their potential. So, odd as it is to say, don't buy this game if your hopes are firmly set on it fulfilling its name. Other side objectives include finding relics complete with information about their usage in history and salvage which can be used to upgrade weapons, alongside a skill point system that lets you customize Lara's abilities to some extent.

The game's biggest offenses come in the form of quick-time-events and overly cinematic gameplay. I love a good movie, but not when I expect it to be a game, and the first couple of hours are chock full of "Press F to not die" scenarios and other varieties of "gameplay" which serves as little more than a reason to keep your attention focused on the game. I'm okay with a few QTEs in, for example, climbing, where it feels like part of the movement and not a cheap excuse for gameplay mechanics, but the majority of this game's QTEs are just unnecessary and annoying.

    **Minor spoilers follow**

Tomb Raider was advertised as a story about survival, which it definitely is for the first two or three hours. After that, all that remains of the idea of "survival" are a few questionably useful skills. For example, the first time you kill someone, Lara reacts as any humane person might with disgust, shock, and fear. Literally less than two minutes later you are gunning down small groups of men like a cold assassin, and not three hours later you're taking out rooms full of them. It really tears apart the survival theme that the developer was trying to push and doing a fairly good job of, QTEs aside during the first part of the game. It doesn't feel like a story about survival and adaptation, just a story about a woman who fights to survive until she gets her first taste of blood before becoming completely feral.

Taking over from the story about survival is the story about constantly finding your friends while fighting through an endless army of savages who theoretically all washed up here on crashed vehicles because there aren't any women on that island. Then it takes a somewhat jarring twist towards the supernatural because, Tomb Raider and it sort of feels like the gameplay it just doesn't know what it wants to be.

Excellent. However, it may feel repetitive at times but that doesn't take away anything from this beautifully crafted game. The only reason I shave-off a point here is because of the plethora of cut-scenes involved. All in all, a superb reboot to the franchise with an engrossing back-story. Disappointed with the Xbox One exclusivity of the sequel though.

While they had their charms, especially the first two games, the games were now beyond repetition and consistently suffered from the usualy clunky controls and poor camera angles ("leap of faith jumps" anyone).
The reboot delivered!, and I found myself quite immersed in the game, especially near the end. The gameplay is one of the better ones i've played in a while, and the very few times i missed a jump was probably my own fault. Lara's movement looks natural as she gracefully navigates her surroundings. And the game had some pretty epic setpieces. Having a reasonable computer i was able to play this game on the maximum settings (though nvidia cards still suffer from the tessalation bug), and the visuals were simply stunning (especially compared to the console versions), though some color pallettes are a little questionable, especially the shantytown looked a little murky (i've got a E-IPS panel, it's not me). The TressFX feature is also a nice touch, though this is only a option if you’ve got a decent graphics card. (Make sure you update your drivers if you’ve got a Nvidia card). Bottomline, it should be said that allot of time went into these visuals, and the Eidos/Square Enix gets some kudo’s for that.
Replayability is good, meaning i will definitely pick it up again after a while. Reason being that the game gives you the option to continue the game to hunt for the collectables after the end. So for the completionists, there is no immediate reason to replay the game again shortly after, you can just continue.
Besides the story there is enough for you to do, though this ultimately comes down to mostly collectables. There are also allot of Secret Tombs for you to discover, though these seem a tad bit underdeveloped. Having been used to the huge dungeons in Skyrim, i found myself scratching my head when I was done in about 5 minutes sometimes. These had allot more potential as it was really exhilarating when you entered them with only your flaming torch, not knowing what was in there.
The story is no shakespear, but it presents itself well enough for you to care long enough. The only real issue with the story is the somewhat predictable characters, that sometimes display slasher-movie type stupidity (“Let’s split up!”). I've also got to mention that i do not share the statements that there are huge plotholes, everything can be explained with some common sense, and most of it is also explained in the books/documents scattered arround the island. I think it all comes down how well you're able to immerse yourself. Also there are people mentioning the disconnection between Lara’s story and the gameplay. She seems to quickly go from defenseless girl to badass. It is explained she is not new to this, but just never put it into actual practice (traning with Roth). Though i do agree it is borderline believeable.
Bottomline, I’m glad Eidos/Square decided to reboot this series. The series didn’t age well, and it was ultimately a gamble for the studios investing allot in this game. I think they did an excellent job and i feel i got my moneys worth. I’m also glad a forgotten icon of gaming history finaly has some of her shine back. I'm anxious to see where the serie goes from here.

I really hope though, that they keep the emphasis on single player next installment. Who really needs a Tomb Raider multiplayer.. it felt tacked on.

It is basically the same shooting/climbing formula, but with a few twists: What I admire about the new TR the most is how it often isn't really linear at all. At several places you get this rather big area filled with collectibles to find, even the linear sections have their small share of detours and dead ends with some kind of reward to be found there. Lara occasionaly returns into some of those big locations with new gear that opens previously sealed paths, Zelda-style. Combat is where older Uncharted games come off better, but that does not mean firefights in TR are bad. Just a bit less polished. You won't really be able to stealth/bow your way through the enemy, but to some extent this is always a possibility and even in open firefight the bow is still quite handy against a smaller group of enemies. From all the bow-enhanced games that came out lately, TR seems to handle it the best. Graphics are pretty great, too bad that after all those patches and driver updates I still can't afford to run the tessaltion unless I'd fancy me some glitches and crashes now and then. It is really a shame for this is probably the first time I found it worth having tesselation turned on. On the bad side of things, characters aren't likeable at all, story might as well be nonexistent and the way devs torture Lara throughout the game is just plain sick. Regarding the "rape" scene how the can anyone see a rape attempt in that, unless they have a fetish for strangling or suffocation?! Leveling-up is a nice addition, same goes for weapon upgrading, though I'd wish for a bit more realistic approach to this. Puzzles are simple and short and I am perfectly fine with that. Overall great easy fun game hindered by lame characters and dull story. Expand

None of them are even hard, you have like two different buttons to watch out for and sometimes you have to press left and right. If you get caught off guard, the death scenes are very well done. How can anybody say there's not enough exploration? You have the (keyword)choice of exploring an entire island and there's a ton of things to explore. I like the assassin creed like instinct thing, I guess some people enjoy mentally keeping track of where they are in the world but I prefer to not have to look at the map all the time. This does make the puzzles super easy though, I didn't google a single solution, they were all very straight forward and sometimes Laura will even blurt out a hint. The story definitely starts out pretty strong, but it gets pretty predictable towards the end. I was never sure if they were going to go with a scientific explanation or magic until about half way through. It's so demanding that I can't believe I had to scale back the shadow quality to 'normal' and use fxaa even when running it with my AMD HD7990. That aside, we all know a game is not just about the graphics. So how does Tomb Raider play out in its gameplay aspect? Well, its actually what you would expect: a very linear and highly scripted gameplay that lacks overall creativity and innovation. It's simply jumping, climbing, laughable combat mechanic, quick time events, and if you're too lazy to figure out where to go, just hit 'q' and it'll show you what to do. It's rinse and repeat. Combined with a lacklustre storyline featuring a younger, less hot and not so badass Lara Croft, this game will easily make you bored of it after the first two hours. Sorry Lara, you know I put up with you for so long, but this is it I think I just fell out of love. It's 5 out of 10.!! Expand

The game is good, but i'll start with the bad:

    - While the main plot of the game is interesting, albeit hackneyed, its execution - its writing - is lacking any force whatsoever. The characters are bland , unpronounced, and barely developed. The diary pages which Lara finds all throughout the Island are supposed to drive the story and move the plot, but instead they serve as unlinked distractions, which cohere together but at such a slow and not discrepant speed that they tend to get easily ignored and forgotten.

    - The action scenes are simply a disaster translated from the consoles onto PC's. I had to run through some of them for over a dozen times to complete. Much of the problem was the limited FOV (Field of View) and the very badly executed third-person camera (see below). Lara's deaths in such scenes is gruesome and uncanny. The game was designed by a sadist (see below).

    - Unmanageable third-person removed camera is not only a distraction, but an annoying obstacle. It's stuck to Lara as a bee on a spring, so each time i would move my mouse to see the surroundings (or enemies) while in motion, the obnoxious camera would return to the position it chose, which depending on the scene - is not necessarily static middle back to front. This recalcitrant camera made a game un-enjoyable and impractical - since i had to constantly fight with the angle of view, with no way of disabling the dynamics of the camera. (Once again - a blissful echo of the Console port).

    - The game was designed by a sadist. The morbid dying sequences are something else. But even when Lara does not die, the dynamics of a situation around her will hurt her, and hurt her bad. Just start the game, play for the first 2 minutes, and you will understand what i mean. Well, guess what - it gets worse :) Lara falls, rooftops crumble on her head, she gets burns, she is burned by explosions, knocked down by brutes, etc. - and she looks pretty torn up by the middle of the game. Wow! Wow - this game was designed or directed by a sadist.

The above things are what makes the game bad, and steers it away from a score above 7. However, there are good things in the game:

    - Main plot, once again, is pretty good, although never fully developed or explored, and Lara's realization that she is on an Island where something controls the weather, and her inability to recognize the WWII subplot, make her a very imperceptive and unintelligent character, as opposed to her description (smart, cunning, intuitive). Really now, when you are looking at a WWII canon, dead soldiers lying around, and reading a diary which explicitly tells you in a German accent "The Russians are coming, we need to move the weather-controlling research away from them" - won't you be able to tie the things together into a Nazi Secret Project Theme? Well, Lara does not - instead she asks us - "What's going on here?!" Oh, come on!

    - Well, ok. Maybe it wasn't as good... :) Anyway, the leveling up system is pretty cool, and keeps the game dynamic but only up until the middle of the game.

    - Voice acting is mostly pretty good too, with just a few exceptions of inability to produce the proper emotion through over-acting and inexperience.

    - Combat sequences are fun, although repetitive.

    - Graphics are pretty good, and actually pretty well optimized for a port (although not completely - such as the low FOV).

    - Exploring is very fun, up until the point where you understand that all the artifacts you find have nothing to do with the story. And the confusion between Chinese and Japanese dynasties does not help the understanding of the whole story.

    Conclusion:
    7/10.
Good game. 15-20 hours to complete on Normal. I did not play multiplayer. No replay value, unless you are a completionist and want to gain all achievements.

The game is great, but the story doesnt make sense when we speak of Lara as a girl. Just now she was crying about being weak and then she shoots 100+ enemies doing headshots. Graphically its great. Mechanics is great but the plot is dumb.

The focus is almost entirely on producing a very high quality title, regardless of innovation or sophistication in level design. The game engine is incredible, offering not only amazing graphics, draw distances and of course, hair, but also realistic destruction, superb controls and realistic AI. Tomb Raider showcases some of the best practices in game programming and doesn't make any mistakes in this department. From intuitive controls to excellent combat mechanics, including an automated cover system. Although you have to always aim first before firing, the shooter sections are genuinely intense and provide a challenge on the Hard difficulty setting. The platforming mechanics and movement animations are meticulous and fluent. The instincts button is very helpful for identifying objects of significance and hints on what to do and where to go so as to minimise frustration. The checkpoint system is perfect, the ability to fast travel will make for some more enticing replay value and best of all, you are rewarded for exploring. Tomb Raider is an extremely linear game, and everything is scripted with a few (not annoying) QTEs and predictable movie-style cliché cutscenes. However, despite the almost automated progression, Tomb Raider will reward those that take the time to explore the extremely detailed environments and optional tombs with both direct gameplay benefits as well as some more backstory. The upgrade system is simple but not tacked on. You don't NEED to buy anything, and the whole game is very simple unlike most RPGs. There aren't a billion different skills and currency types and meters. Whilst this is preferable for non-RPG players like myself, it does lack depth and it would be nice if there was more player involvement and an opportunity to use the weapons. After all, it is a survival game so it should at least depict this in gameplay. The story and character development is OK but could be a lot better. The multiplayer has an interesting game mode with "Cry for Help", and the progression, weapon balancing, perks etc. are well balanced (minus shotguns, which are underpowered), but the quality is not comparable with that of the single player, with a few bugs and laggy matches aplenty. Overall, Tomb Raider is a true adventure game which tries to appeal to the casual audience. It is the kind of game you recommend to a non-gamer and the emotionally sensitive. Although Tomb Raider is a shining example of game quality and practices regarding collectibles, mechanics etc. and has mainstream appeal, hardcore gamers will find more enjoyment in other titles with greater depth and more gameplay-orientated, player-driven approach such as Far Cry 3. If you're looking for a modern adventure game though, Tomb Raider is by far the most polished and appealing even to those that don't like the genre. Expand

As someone who has been a fan of most Tomb Raider games I was somewhat afraid of change for the franchise. I did end up enjoying the game but not in the same way that I enjoyed the original series. The puzzles seemed somewhat bland to me, too simple and not as difficult as the puzzles in the original Tomb Raider. Other than that it did make for an overall enjoyable experience.

The graphics are above average and the animations are okay, except that there are numerous clipping issues on Lara's basic movements, which is unacceptable. The sounds, music, effects and everything like that are good. The combat is a pretty average, really nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done. The involvement with the environment, and the development of Lara throughout the game is masterfully done. Lara's image will change from a pristine looking young lady in the beginning of the game to a rugged, experienced explorer in the end. Though, Lara herself is also one of the biggest flaws in the game. She just isn't believable at all. This is the problem with strong female protagonists. Females just don't have the physical strength or athleticism to make the actions Lara does believable. I mean, especially for an archaeologist who clearly has never done strength training to be able to pull herself up constantly is just laughable. And the terrible tacked on MP modes. Seriously, not every game needs multiplayer and Tomb Raider is yet another example of a game that would have highly benefited from having no MP mode at all. But on to the biggest problem with the game: The quick time events. My God, they are everywhere. I died more times because i missed a quick time event than I did in all other parts of the game combined. It's pathetic. Why do developers think that quick time events are fun? At the end of the game, right before the credits, it says "We have made the best game we possibly can" If your best game is this riddled with quick time events then someone needs to be fired. Honestly, it's embarrassing. I know it seems like a I ranted about a lot for a score of 8/10. But despite all of these flaws, I really did enjoy Tomb Raider more than most games. Expand

However.. by the end of the game I was so sick of finding useless stuff in each area that I didn't even want to complete the game. It started to feel like a chore.

If you ignore the Easter egg hunting and just play thru the game quickly it is actually pretty good. Without the mindless task of searching the environment for a bunch of useless stuff the game runs at a pretty decent pace, and the story and voice acting are not bad.

So to sum it all up. Tomb Raider isn't a bad game, but they bloated it up with a lot of useless game play in an effort to make the game seem longer than it really is, and in doing so they really took away from the speed of the game, and it really was not at all necessary. Without all the usless features in the game I probably would have rated it a 7.

My PC is decent, but could be a lot better. I'm used to having the choice between the best graphics and stutter free experience, but this game gave me both. I jumped straight into the game on 'Ultimate' settings expecting to have to turn the settings down but I didn't have to touch them. Gameplay is always smooth, loading screens very short, and the graphics are sublime. This is hands down the best performance/graphics tradeoff I've seen in a game. Metro: Last Light may have been prettier (if that's the right term to describe a post-apocalyptic scene), but it couldn't match the performance of Tomb Raider at any graphics settings.
After getting into the game and admiring the graphics, however, the next thing that struck me was the story-telling. The first hour or so is a very linear experience, with a gradual introduction to key gameplay mechanics and an unfolding of the basic story that these mechanics are telling. It's not giving anything away to say that you start off as a fairly meek young girl, but the evolution into a hero is executed masterfully. Not too quick so as to become meaningless, nor too slow as to become tedious. Before too long you are equipped with the skill-set required to traverse the island in a dynamic and fun way, and the story entwines with your progression through the island in a way that makes each area a meaningful addition to the game.
Atmosphere also deserves a mention because, while you gradually become able to master some of the scenes that you find yourself in, my own experience was that I always felt like a visitor to that island. But that is certainly not a bad thing. This is a game that makes you creep round corners in fear of disturbing an unknown setting. My own play-style was one that meant I preferred to weigh up an area before jumping into it, and this game was really well crafted for that. That may not be everyone's cup of tea but if it is then you won't be disappointed by the reward you feel by having assessed a situation correctly. The puzzles, or hidden tombs, are perfect examples of this. While not particularly difficult, you cannot just storm into them without paying attention to your surroundings and expect to win. You need to look around, understand your scenario and maybe even do a bit of trial and error before passing them. The in-game rewards from these hidden tombs are paltry but the satisfaction for completing them (and the atmosphere of the tombs themselves) is enough to make them exceedingly worthwhile.
The last thing that deserves a mention is character progression, which I felt was just right for an action game. The options for weapon mods and person skills are limited and the best skills are locked behind a 'you need x skills to unlock' tier system. Unless you storm through the game without doing any of the extra tombs, or miss all the salvage available, the likelihood is that you'll pick up most of the skills available in a fairly linear system. In an RPG, this would be a major downfall, but this is not an RPG and theory-crafting would not be welcome here. The skills you learn have a noticeable effect on gameplay but each only in a minor way. The game would not be broken if you choose not to pick up any skills, and on the flip-side, you are not a god by having them all.
The major issue that people raise about the game is its linear nature, and it's a fair assessment. If that is a problem for you then you may not enjoy the game. But this game is about story and it unashamedly executes that story in a masterful way. You are at the helm of that story but you are not going to change it and this is not to everyone's taste, as can be seen from the negative comments here. A lot of games pretend to have choice in an ultimately linear experience (The Stanley Parable can be seen as an excellent commentary on this, as well as a more visceral commentary on gaming in general), rarely a game may actually present you with game-changing choices. Some of the strongest examples of gaming in recent years, however, recognise the potential to tell a particular story in computer games. Tomb Raider is one of the finest examples of this story-driven genre.

I can reach that spot feeling, I hope that in a sequel this could be addressed cause the platforming is however rewarding as never but I feel that a bit more challenge could add to the experience. 2) Lara is responding in a perfect way, in the game you really feel you ARE Lara Croft and not just driving a mannequin, this boost that already spoken "I want more" from the (outstanding) environment. 3) the very well implemented RPG options could be implemented better, the first two survival skills for example, if I'm not missing something are pretty nearly useless throughout the game, adding more vicious animals to defend from and the need to feed yourself to keep health regenerating could have given a meaning to those. 4) When you have the right equipment there is too few backtracking that could be done in order to discover more, there are no reasons to explore again an already 100%ed sector except to gain some experience from enemies, a couple of "ok now I have this, let see if I can access that spot" per sector could have been an HUGE booster for the overall experience. 5) The upgrade system is well crafted and enough satisfying but hiding the upgrades in the menu could give that feeling of "what now that is thrown away from the complete visible list. 6) The above also works for collectibles, I hate games in which you knows in advance what you will find in them, this applies even to this beautiful game, knowing in advance how many collectibles I have to find is one of the worst part of this title, an "I feel like I'm still missing something in this area" would be a much more effective way to manage the whole thing, as well as get rid of percentage counters, as well as giving a more puzzle meaning to collectibles while being able to see them as you find them not in advance. 7) Tombs, those are very well crafted but really feels too short for a true TR lover, I'm expecting to see more of them and more complex along with some well crafted underwater mess on the sequel. 8) Secondary bosses: it could be nice to hear Lara commenting on her equipment and physically see the parts of it as well as seeing Lara assembling those parts ...and having secondary bosses to fight experimenting on them the new acquired firepower while tasting the new discovered within herself passion for raiding tombs. 9) the story: it's really well crafted but could be balanced better, at an emotional level the story requires you to keep going while the gameplay requires you to explore, well, it is balanced but it could be more, from a gameplay perspective everything that's "hurry on" is out of place in a TR game, also the acting is top notch but could have been polished aligning it with the above point of view. 9) Enemies: sometimes it's like I'm facing the old chapters enemies, well the AI is not that bad but sometimes is not polished as it should be resulting in too few options at your enemies to choose from making the mass-murder them a bit too easy while sometimes they can spot you too realistically when you don't have any chance to spot them making impossible to sneak past or avoid or stealth kill someone that even knowing you are somewhere on the island shouldn't know you are "right there". 10) Indicators: I think that a lens could suffice to point out the presence of something, no need to show the button everytime, it slightly detract to immersion.

However the above are only my suggestions in case of an unlikely reading of my review by someone from Crystal Dynamics that, however, does not detract a bit to the gorgeousness of the game, the game is already 99,99%, the above only could boost it at 100% and a sequel to 200%

Despite the above this game is a helluva BLAST that's worth every penny, a "back to those days" for TR fans and a good point to start from for those who are not...yet..

Thanks SquareEnix, thanks Crystal Dynamics, playing it I can feel all the efforts you made to make not only a generic masterpiece but a Tomb Raider masterpiece, I'm one of the biggest fan of TR on planet Earth and you made me proud again of being, I sincerely hope it could have the success it deserves as well as seeing sequels of the same quality in which I will be able to hear the "Oh-hh!" turn in the well known "Ah-haa!", if you knows what I mean.. :)

This stuff was for SQUEX and CD, to everyone else all I can say is that this game is truly one of the best games ever made, it looks gorgeous, it sounds great, it plays amazingly.

Tomb Raider (2013) is the game the series needs, not necessarily the one the series deserves. The game doesn't feel like a tomb raider game. My biggest complaint is that if you get spotted every enemy instantly knows your location, regardless of where you are.

Still, the game is fun. It switches between puzzles, platforming, and enemies and has a story that feels more like it belongs in a summer blockbuster than a video game, complete with plot holes and heart pounding action sequences. It did feel a bit repetitive 8 hours in but not as repetitive as, say, Portal 1. Also the multiplayer feels tacked on. Just saying.

This wouldn't be a review if I didn't talk about the quick time events. Yes, they're there. And no, you won't have to take 500 tries to do them. The problem with the quick time events is that you'll have to quickly go between mashing the arrow keys to pressing F to E. Strangely, most of the quick time events happen at the beginning of the game. Either that or I just got used to them.

Everything in this game is pretty solid and works quite well, from the story and character development, to visuals and sound design. A sigh of relief for the much improved shooting sequences and camera angles as well. Despite this, nothing in the game is particularly outstanding. It's good, but not great.

Some issues for me included the ridiculousness of some scenes. On occasion, some sequences looked like they were straight out from a Michael Bay movie. Lara's constant commentary on very minor details was also a bit annoying for me. I was also hoping the game would make more liberal use of it's platforming mechanics, with more complex puzzles. And while the title 'Tomb Raider' suggests you'll be raiding tombs most of the time, this isn't really the case. More actual tomb raiding would've been nice, though combat sequences are still quite fun.

I had to stop playing at one point when I walked into yet another shooting gallery populated with enemies who are immune to my learned skills. The combat is tedious. The puzzles are mindless and only difficult when the developer decides not to highlight certain ledges that in other areas of the game would be highlighted. Personally this game has zero replay value. The main story is surprisingly intriguing with most of the characters being adequately developed. Though Uncharted has done everything this game has done only Uncharted did them better. Instead of quick time events Uncharted had mini-games and it didn’t try to pretend that its puzzles were anything more than filler. Tomb Raider is at times a fun ride, 5/10. Expand

However, after the first 5 or 6 hours of playing, I found that the gameplay became very repetitive, both combat and puzzle solving. Because of the repetition, I think I lost a quicker interest in the story line. Granted the story line is good and dramatic, but not my favorite. Had I written my review after only four hours of gameplay, I would be praising every aspect of it. But I lost interest in the game overall, even though I did finish it.

I was also disappointed in the puzzle-solving within the game. I have never played any Tomb Raider games before, and, knowing the franchise to having a reputation for being a puzzle-solving type genre, I was looking for puzzles that grew to be difficult towards the later part of the game, like Legend of Zelda type puzzles: challenging and fun. However, the Tomb Raider puzzles were consistently pretty easy and straightforward in an uninteresting way.

The game was beautiful, fun in the beginning, and worth playing only if Steam drops the price to maybe $25.

If you liked the first 5 or so Tomb Raiders you will like this game, if you preferred the new, more open world games you will probably not like this as much. The game is a tad bit more open than they used to be through the use of base camps, and you do need to back-track if you want to get/unlock everything.

I like the QTEs (Quick Time Events pressing a button at the right moment), I feel adds to the suspense and invokes a sense of urgency, but it is something new to the TR genre and I understand why some don't like it. Those who don't like it however greatly exaggerate their usage. Other then the first introductory level where it is used quite heavily it happens maybe once or twice per level/area and they are done very well. The only issue with them (and the reason I knocked off a point from the score) is that for the PC version if you don't have an Xbox 360 controller hooked up it can be difficult to figure out what keys need to be pressed and when. This is something I hope they fix in a future patch.

The other reason I knocked off a point is because there were not any large puzzles (that I have read about or found so far) I remember the older games where you would need to run around a tomb and find the pieces to put a contraption back together; and then jump through a number of 'hoops' to get to the end... Fall to your death several times along the way, before getting to the top. Even the DLC (Bonus content) tombs don't have much depth to them.

Overall though it's a great game and I would recommend any fans of the first 5 or so Tomb Raiders to pick it up now; otherwise wait for a Steam Sale and pick it up when it's a little cheaper and you will be happy with your purchase.

    2. The bow and the ice axe feel appropriately weighty and all the weapons deliver satisfying kills/executions. 3. Controls are absolutely fantastic (very responsive). The cover system is simple and very effective overall (no button presses necessary, just get close to it).
    4. If you've got a high level graphics card you'll be in love with the visuals. 5. The level design is fantastic, there are multiple ways around (at least in the bigger areas) and plenty of secrets to be found. 6. I really loved the UI, which was simple and effective (not quite Dead Space level UI but still great) Cons:
1.The tombs are fun but there aren't enough of them, and they're all quite easy
    2. Game will force you to fight certain enemies for setpiece moments (like Uncharted), instead of being given the option to sneak around (this is relatively rare though) 3. the survival instinct button is basically like detective vision in arkham asylum and not necessary imo.

Single Player is the only reason to play this, although multiplayer is fun if you can actually find people to play with.

The combat is okay, although the enemy seem to lack any tactics beyond sitting still or flying down zip lines at you. It's like shooting fish in a barrel on normal difficulty at least (I'm wishing I'd gone for hard now). As for those dreaded quick-time events, they're really not that bad. Most can be completed first time through. Although I thought button mashing/joystick waggling went out with the Amiga (at least my Logitech does macros). Talking of which, I fumbled a few QT events (several times) as I kept forgetting what I'd assigned to which key on my Logitech G13 gamepad. This game feels like playing a movie, but in a good way. The action is fantastic, the game transitions between gameplay, cutscenes, and interactive events seamlessly, creating an experience that is exciting to watch but still keeps you on your toes. There is not a lot of dialogue, it is mostly action, but the action is done well.

The exploration is so-so. The levels sort of alternate between linear action levels with no need to explore, and slightly more open levels with loot to find. This keeps the game from getting too repetitive, which is nice. Acrobatics are pretty standard and not very challenging.

The weapon upgrade system is not great, but better than nothing I guess. You find Scrap which you use to upgrade your weapons, but it doesn't have a huge impact on how you will be using them. It is also pretty mindless: you just loot all the containers you see then craft what you can at campsites.

The RPG mechanics are an unnecessary add-on. You get XP from killing enemies and finding treasure, and spend the XP on skills, most of which are not game-changing.

This game tries to present itself as survivalism, but that is just a theme. You can hunt, but it only gets you XP. There is no need to look for food, water, etc. The game even has the ususal health regeneration that action games all have these days. The only resources are scrap and ammo.

Story is not bad. I am not a big Tomb Raider fan: they were too silly and sexist for my taste. This one is better, the main character is more human. The change feels a lot like comparing the James Bond movie Casino Royale to most of the earlier ones: this is more gritty, more human, and more interesting.

All in all, fun for a 14 hour playthough, and maybe another in a few months. It was entertaining, as action usually is, but don't expect more than that. I recommend getting it on sale.

I do have to down-rate this by 1 simply because I completed the game, on normal, just over 3 hours at 78% completion. A friend of mine who spent more time (~25 hours) in the game resulted in 83% completion.

Other then that, I hope to see Crystal Dynamics back with a sequel to this. I could take or leave Square Enix's production.

Everything you could want from an archeological adventure, except having to press six keys to mantle. [Apr 2013, p.80]

While not every promising idea Tomb Raider has is pulled off successfully, it nevertheless turns in a tense and memorable ride that combines modern game design with its forebears’ adventurous spirit in some exciting ways. Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
