Agree strongly with the negative reviews. This game is a MESS of QTEs, narrow, linear levels and mediocre writing pretending to tell a deep story. The whole thing has a lot of potential, and it may get good towards the end. Who knows? I got sick of the quick-time crap pretty fast and went on to play Farcry 3, which was about 1000X better.

THE GROT REVIEW CRITERIA: After a long time writing reviews like an anus, think its time to set a few bad habits straight: Stop insulting designers. Show some respect for the design process and getting games in circulation. Hence (1) No Red scores. (2) Game scores as follows: Bad Game 5/10. Poor Game 6/10. Mediocre Game: 7/10. Good Game 8/10. Great game 9/10. Stella Game 10/10. To get 10/10 it must be a game that can be (theoretically) play-able for 1000+ hours. Not only great but near endless fun. Games may be bad or poor but making them should earn respect. Thus even the worst POS will still be a 5/10. 0/10 no longer exists in my vocabulary. Yellow is the new red. I am simply astonished by this game astonished by the unbelievable praise it is receiving. This game is a litany of bad design, a shopping list of every single thing that is wrong with gaming right now. All it needs is EAs hateful "always online/MMO DRM" and it would be a perfect storm of utter dross.

Poor, shoddily executed graphics (don’t even get me started on the Pantene hair) pale into insignificance when you try and play. It is not a game, but a cut scene, one in which you inexplicably have to press the occasional button to proceed. It is the QTE to rule all QTEs, a non-interactive, bewildering story of screaming, talking to yourself and boring, rehashed piffle that Ms Pratchett should be mortally embarrassed about. Worst of all though, the bejewelled turd festering atop this rotting carcass, is the camera and the controls. So desperate, so obsessed are game devs now about making their game cinematic, that CD have just gone the whole hog, removing any pretence that this is a game. The camera sways, rolls, pitches and tilts with Lara's every footfall and this game now stands as the first in 30 years of gaming to give me motion sickness. It is eye-wateringly idiotic in its execution and was the final reason I gave up and hit uninstall. This is a game, devs: you are not directors or producers, you are coders and artists start bloody acting like it! In most games I am complaining when the camera is taken away from my control in TR 2013, it is never IN my flamin' control. It rolls around, looking at whatever it pleases while the devs sit and grin, nodding sagely as they animate water rolling down its imaginary lens.
This has to be one of the worst games I have ever seen and that it is liked by anyone at all simply terrifies me.

Maybe all of the voice acting, X-treme graphics, and awesome quicktime events got me so freaking IMMERSED I couldn't ever face reality again...or maybe this was just a reaallly game. Before the "modern" game itself...lets talk about the obvious to anyone who is or knows a woman...the character is grotesquely sexist. They made her a "REAL" girl this time. You can tell by the way they shrunk her boobs and made her cry/complain at every point in the game! The whole time I found myself saying "Wait, we just established that shes a serious straight A anthropology student whose been on expeditions and has been through plenty of survival training, (something a dumb with big could never do LOLOL) why is she crying when she has to kill a deer? Why does she need a man to OBI WAN her every time she has to do the simplest task (like use a bow and arrow)" The writers couldn't figure out if she was a strong independent woman, or a girl who will grow into one...so they half assed it and made her both, a conflicted poorly written character. At least the old Lara was what she was. To simplify it, if Lara was to break the fourth wall and see me rolling my eyes at her tears, the new Lara would call me an insensitive jerk (and probably run off crying, only to get super serious when she discovers an artifact...cause no man will tell her she cant be a scientist). The old Lara would just put a bullet through my head. Now to clarify my tit beef, its simple, backtracking on a popular established character design is patronizing. You are telling the audience that you fed them and they are for liking it. Ultimately, its the New Coke. They should have spent time making her sex appeal the least interesting part of her character development, but instead they just hacked off her breasts and made a big deal about "realism" which is cruel to real girls with big breasts who wish to be taken seriously. In a nutshell, I wouldn't throw D cups on Alyx Vance and call her sexy, nor would I make Lara into slender Angelina Jolie ideal, and call it "realistic". A mans doing.

How about that gameplay? The whole game is running through a hallway. But dont worry, the explosions and quick time events will remind you just how plot filled and immersive those hallways are. Just make sure you pay attention, sometimes you have to press e! Remember the old tomb raider? Each room was a platforming puzzle filled with traps and baddies? Here each room is a straight line filled with motion blur and ledges painted white (how else will you know that you should climb them!?!?!). Combat? I hope you like gears of war. Close zoom over the shoulder slow walking with cover. Everything else is a quicktime event...god you better love them quicktime fights...

This game is everything I hate about the industry in one package. Remember how in HL2 you did everything yourself, left your keyboard with white knuckles and sweaty palms, and you felt like you knew Gordon Freeman better than your best friend, even though he never said a word the entire game? Yea, that was sweet...but that was Citizen Kane, this is Avatar.

Even though the visuals and gameplay are exquisite, Tomb Raider's voiceacting sometimes feels a bit too much. Lara always thinks out loud, and almost every single line she says ends in a higher or lower tone. The beauty of the voiceacting however is when you find relics surprisingly, that's where Lara's voice really stands above many other games.

Firstly. The quick-time events are awful, clumsy and extremely un-intuitive. I like the little ones if Lara slips while climbing but the major ones are just irritating.

Secondly. The game tries not to be linear and encourage exploration but the map and navigation system needs improving and the objective view makes the puzzles a little too easy. It changes a puzzle from working out what to do. To working out how you are supposed to interact with the highlighted object.

Good Game, worth getting but not the GOTY I was hoping for.

I'm not a fan of new games and throw away old series...no way! Contrary, some new games like RE(another child-start game) are not my style...and maybe for this i think TR is the best remake of a game ever.Undoubtedly.

This game explain HOW LARA BECOME A TOMB RAIDER! And is very great accomplished. From beginning was only a explorer, a simple and naive-scary girl but when circumstances demanded, became an adventurer and...with apologies, a killer-girl of criminals. But only because it was forced...

The new TR is just what a game need to be.Amazing graphics, sound, story, puzzles and challenges. The words are little and poor in this case, you need to see, to play TR to feel. This is not a technical review well, dx11 look amazing this is a heart-touching review of TR.
And about a compared with...another ordinary game, NO! Would be a blasphemy...remember TR was the first game with this gameplay and all the games who next about TR was inspired by the game TR.

    Congratulations!!!!
Having looked forward for ages to the release of a much loved game, I wanted to express my amazement as to the ease at which you have managed to ruin a whole series of games, on turning something that was enjoyed by many into yet another brainless shoot-em-up aimed at god knows what market which is already saturated by strikingly similar games (the cheap pornographic sound effects of Lara dying are beyond belief). The fact that the graphics are good (though utterly and unnecessarily gross. Once you've seen one severed head/arm/leg/torso.........) does not hide the fact that there are no challenges involved. All this apart from the fact the replacing the usual "mummy threat" has been substituted by having a rather brainless go at the Russians and Japanese does not make for an interesting storyline.

All-in-all, you have done the Tomb Raider merchandise no favours. "Raiders" like my self may have bought this game but I doubt they will buy another. I most certainly will not.

Now this is MY GRIPES about the new one noone else, like i stated in the very begining i felt like it had max payne 3 feel to it cuz that what i play that was similar to the game to me, the game start you off simulating that you actually need food to survive which i thought was a good start, seconds later you realize that you don't need food to survive ok Then you start to explore the map yes now you have bullet time indicator like thing that make stuff glows to actually help you find what you looking for, just press a button for you to explore basically the whole area of the map what is the point of that now that took the exploring clean out of the way, there were only a couple of times through the whole game that i thought lara was in trouble hell you had no control of that this is probably shortest game in tomb raider history.

So now with that out of the way, how in the hell can you call this a survival game when you took out the most important parts, oh yea she has some new toys to play with wow really don't need to upgrade them just headshot any enemy with any weapon should suffice, then on top of that she wearing indestructible clothing that took the cake for me, i was playing a kids game with max payne graphics no story no depth to the characters nothing just hold my hand and the game will guide me where i need to go like a 2yr, thxs i didn't want to work any of my brains cell today anyway If you expecting to a fight a boss in this tombraider dream on.
The caves look generic outside map were ok. Enemy characters, please one arrow to the dome its over even if they call for help, this was not tomb raider so why in the would they call it that you go into the tomb expecting traps and so forth an what you get is (gasping in awe) sigh wtf you got to be ♥♥♥♥ing kidding me right. This has zero replayability there is no real reason to get to 100% completion. The cons outweighted the pros in my book. Qtes i think that cover no need to comment on that Despite the amazing reviews on this game i have not read one that came to that conclusion on replayability from any of the professional writers for this game that's if they even play the game which i highly doubt. That kill lara croft for me will never get another tomb raider game period.

The story has it's ups and it's downs. Discovering what happened on the island is quite interesting, and is told through the environment, enemies, and diaries, however your cadre of multicultural stereotypes that represent Lara's companions is probably the weakest link as it doesn't ever give you a reason to care for them, and luckily they are a very small portion of the narrative. Story-wise, I think this game's content is quite confusing sometime. Unlike Nolan's Batman Begins in which Bruce Wayne became a fighter after years' training, Lara 's growth from a naive college student to an expert adventurer is so quick that it makes little sense. I think the developers made the main story first then attached a origin story of Lara on it as a selling point. To me, it would be better making it just another story of Lara, but the stunt of "origin story" may attract larger audience.

The strong aspect of the game is the presentation. This time, Tomb Raider completely abandoned the old gameplay formula and is more akin to Uncharted and Batman Arkham series, but the result, I have to say, is fluent and beautiful. It has none of the movement or camera problems from previous games and everything moves fluidly. The gameplay is great too. Tomb Raider introduced new ways of fighting enemies: covered gun-fighting, stealth killing, and sneaking which eventually makes the game very pleasant to play.

Overall it's still a great action/adventure game with believable world and characters except for Lara's unbelievable transform. I will certainly recommend this game.

This game really took me back to TR 1, 2, and 3, which I loved so much, but it is definitely its own game and no real comparison can be made between old and new.

The quicktime elements forces me to make snap movements/judgements, it forces me to be on edge, it forces me to wonder "what's around the corner", and that is exactly what Lara is feeling. These quicktime elements do an excellent job of connecting the gamer to the character.

Of course, Lara is pleasantly fleshed out a s a character, but no one else is as she spends 99% of her time alone. So when people die, the gamer doesn't care. Its hard to make the gamer care when there isn't a chance to get to know the other characters, so I am not sure what the developer could have done to assist. They tried leaving books around, and some video, but that wasn't enough to connect. Perhaps if we got to play Lara before the crash.

    GAMEPLAY

Lara is motivated to survive, and this is believable. There are no strange quests that have you bringing something useless to someone else, its all just centered around getting things done to live. Which makes sense.

Gaining experience and having loot/salvage is also useful, so looking for boxes/items is valuable and also believable.

The controls for the PC were easy to learn and I had no issues with my keys.

Lara's clothes actually deteriorate though the game, which actually makes sense since she's battered ALL the time. I like that she's wearing full pants and two tanks, rather than short-shorts.

    TOMBS

This is where I have my biggest beef. Its hard not to compare to previous games, it really is hard and as I said in the beginning, one should NOT make the comparison.. but the thing is called Tomb Raider, so.. here goes:

The tomb puzzles are not puzzles. They are really easy "walkthroughs". Like.. lame easy. flick a switch and you've discovered the solution.

I'm not sure what happened here. Did the developer think we (the audience) were 10 years old? or that we thought like them? Not sure. The tombs are almost useless (if it wasn't for the experience and the salvage). I'm only going through them now to confirm that they are all indeed that easy.

Oddly enough, the hardest one I encountered was at the beginning with the plane.

    VOICE ACTING

I think Lara Croft's VA did a great job in conveying pain, sadness and anger through the many different avenues that Lara communicates with the world.

    UPGRADING SKILLZ

I wanted more from this, since I reached a point in the game that adding a skill didn't do much for Lara; though updating weapons did.

    CONCLUSION

What surprised me about the game was the believable survival aspect of the game and how the gameplay reinforced that story, along with Lara's journey from innocent to survivor.

I enjoyed the stealth side as well as the direct attack sequences, and I think I may always remember ziplining through the beautiful backdrops of the game.

it totally breaks immersion. On PC it doesnt even tells you what to press (you have symbols which you can look up what exactly they mean) and generally it feels totally repeatedly and unsatisfying to die over and over from QTEs. too bad i didnt read all of the reviews. would i have known that i wouldnt have bought it. at least i wont endorse the game to any of my friends.

Awesome game and plots. Real challenges. Love the gameplay and graphics and found that I soon got very immersed in the game and really felt I was being hunted. My Game of the year. Beats Bioshock Infinite hands down and is the quality of Far Cry 3. This is a game worth the money whatever you pay for it.

I think the dead and decomposing bodies were put there to satisfy the blood lust of teenagers who might be enticed into the tomb raider franchise. Its a shame really because there was much I enjoyed about the game, I really felt invested in my Lara and her struggle to survive and keep her buddies safe. I enjoyed the exploration and I liked the combat. But I did find the immersion was broken by the bugged quick time events and the over use of dead and decomposing bodies. Expand

The platforming in the game is very disappointing, even if it weren't a TR game. The game suffers from the infamous modern day video gaming cancer known as "accessibility". Due to the shallow, hand held environment traversal, the game boils down to little more than linear progression through what's meant to be an open world environ, with ho hum shooting segments interspersed throughout. The fully automated cover system destroys any semblance of tension, as it enters cover whenever an enemy is in the vicinity; irrespective of whether they're within the player's view or not. The game is also hampered by overuse of the dreaded 'QTE's' and too many cut-scenes. The violence depicted in said cut-scenes is also way overkill for the TR franchise -- patently done in order to attract a broader [American] crowd. If you want to play Tomb Raider for what made it a fan favourite - platforming, puzzles and exploration - don't play this 'junk food' title. Stick to early Lara Croft adventures. For Tomb Raider 2013 is little more than one cut-scene followed by another linear TPS segment until the end credits. (NB: I did not play the online-only, arena-based mutiplayer component of the game due to the scathing reviews it received.) Expand

I'm so glad this game turned out to be what it was. When I first heard that they were rebooting the Tomb Raider series again, I was quite disappointed as I thought they'd end up messing it up but they made it even better. The new direction this series has taken in this game has been brilliantly deployed, and I'm not even finished it yet!

Thanks to the ridiculously good visuals, sound, and voice acting I was able to immerse myself into the story and enjoy the action-packed ride. The story itself isn't anything special, but it's good enough. Combat is fluid. QTEs aren't my preferred gameplay mechanic, but they're well done. Exploration is satisfying and rewarding, though I could have done with less hand-holding as far as discovering tombs and items is concerned. I don't feel compelled to 100% most games, but I feel like this is one where it would actually be fun to do. In short, if you're in the mood for a relatively short but satisfying game that feels like you're watching/participating in an action movie, Tomb Raider is a great choice. Expand

My last point is there really isn't much tomb raiding going on here. The tombs are all single room puzzles and are generally quite basic. A real pity that developers can't throw some more difficult stuff into the optional tombs.

Luckily the plot and desire to see what happens should get you through the game. The beginning and end are very good. its just the middle that suffers from "you are an idiot and we don't trust you to play the game yourself" syndrome.

This game...does have a lot to like. Great graphics, though those don't make or ruin a game really. They are however glitchy on nVidia 600 series cards look up the kaleidoscope bug.

Story wise, it's relatively well done. You're shipwrecked and need to get off the island. You're in a tomb raider game, so expect supernatural stuff to happen. No surprise, if you're OK with Indiana Jones, you're OK with this IMO.

Acting: well done. Lara's acting is the best, and she seems like a believable character. She never really is OK with killing, which is a nice element.

Redesign: Yeah, it's a new Lara, not as well endowed, but the difference is she is a believable character. Frankly, I like the new visual design they gave her. I like the fact we're seeing her kill for the first time, that she doesn't like it, that she struggles. That she's human.

Gameplay: Well, here it gets a little dicey. Is it fun? Sure. Platforming is a little simple (jump, you'll make it.) The bow and gun are fun I especially like the bow. Silent kills work (bow shot, or strangling.) You can try to play the game like hitman, if you so wish.

Movement is fine, except early on I would be going around thinking "there might be an enemy here, I should walk and not run" until I realized that the game would make me crouch if I needed to, walk slowly when someone was near. It removes the surprise from the game, it makes it TOO easy. One complaint though is that you're guided too much just when walking. Walking along a cliff that turns to the left? Don't worry about holding down the A key to go to the left, just hold W to walk forward, you follow the ledge automatically. Takes the fun out of the game.

Combat is alright, like I said before the gun and bow work. It's cover based though, so again it's simplified.

The AI is...stupid. They pop up to let you get a shot off quickly. The only challenge is timing how long you can hold an arrow taught on the bow.

Quick Time Events (QTEs) and cut scenes. Yeah. They're there. Sometimes I go into a cutscene and don't know it and am left thinking "no, Lara. To the left! LEFT! Oh, wait...I'm not in control right now." Sometimes I don't know when I'm meant to take over. On the QTEs, I had to replay a scene where a russian guy can't decide if he wants to rape or strangle you. (knee him, bite ear, shoot, mash f key, mash e key, he's dead.) They don't make it explicitly known what key to mash all the time, so I start mashing everything. It's awful. There aren't TOO many of these. So far.

All in all, I like the game so far. I can see myself replaying it. Will it make best of 2013 for me? No. But it's worth the money to me, I think. I like the redesign of Lara and the re-imagining. I hope Square keeps going, and learns from the mistakes in this game.

Level design is strong, and interactions with the levels are generally glitch free, falls to your death will be at your own making, rather than Fudgey Fingers Syndrome. The downside, some of the companions are a bit underwritten, they could have maybe used some additional development, one obvious "turncoat" in the bunch, but nothing that really distracts. It's like getting a birthday cake and somebody accidentally bent one of the candles slightly out of place. Unfortunate, but the cake still tastes great.

The multiplayer is weak sauce though, standard deathmatch fare, but not necessary either. In the aforementioned cake analogy, this cake came with a complimentary sachet of ketchup. Inappropriate, but easily discarded. There are other, much more robust, multiplayer experiences out there, that it's half-hearted inclusion here I suspect boils down to either a poor marketing decision to tick a bullet point, or round 1 of multiplayer practice for the technical team for something more ambitious to come later. With the DLC bizarrely choosing to focus on the multiplayer only, I suspect the latter to be closer to the truth. Co-op multiplayer on the other hand, was a sorely missed opportunity here, the game practically begging for it, with two distinct characters. In the absence of the other player, then either AI controlled and/or player hot-swappable between characters. See: Mass Effect, Portal 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, any Lego game. Maybe in version 2.0.

Technically, it's a very strong package. Beautiful vistas, great camera direction, massive draw distance, great effects mostly, reasonable AI. Couple of dodgy fire animations here n there when Lara is literally up to her neck in it, but an otherwise stellar effort visually. The only really negative technical point was that on first playthrough, the game was really unstable, crashing regularly, but a quick Google on this issue, and subsequent disabling of the Tesselation feature in the graphics options sorted that. Clearly a misstep in the QA process there, between Square, Crystal Dynamics and NVidia.

The only reason I'm not giving this one a ten is because of the irritating amount of scenes where you have partial control of the character, and have to push Lara foward Jurassic Park style. Such parts should be cutscenes, not playable scenes. That was a slight insult to the player's intelligence and do more to annoy than to advance the story.

But some of the action was just breathtaking with storms, fires, tens of bad guys shooting fire arrows from all sides, and whatnot. I loved the art direction, the stuns, the enviroments, clothing, enemy design, etc.

As any TR game there was a lot of action and it was executed very well. I liked the shooting part of the game, the bow, the gun feel. It could of been a bit slower imo and also there doesnt need to be so much ammo lying everywhere, I might have run out of ammo maybe 2 times on medium on 1 gun only. For a survival game that is not very realistic.

The puzzles were pretty good but not too hard, and with survival sense it is very clear what you need to do at all times. There were a few cool puzzles but they were buried deep in optional tombs. And this is the only downside of the game is that I wish the puzzles were a little bit harder, not like the first and second part where it can take you a day to figure just one puzzle out but still There also were pretty much no traps and clever tomb designs... you know typical adventure stuff like arrows from walls, falling celing if you step on the wrong stone, swinging axes, etc.

The story is pretty gripping helped by the great henchmen designs altough it is too much like Far Cry but I guess they did develop the games simultaniously so I doubt they plagiarized. The actor that played Croft was pretty stellar, and also very hot, and the voiceovers were actually quite good.

Overall, I feel the game was an 8 with points being deducted for some gfx hiccups here and ther, as well as abundance of ammo that made the fighting a bit too easy. Lack of complex puzzles, and any kind of environment contraptions was also a bit disappointing seeing this is a TOMB raider game after all. Bearing all this in mind, the puzzles that are in there are rather good, the art direction is top notch, the fighting is fast and fluid, and it is all held together by a good story, acting, and voice overs. Overall I say buy this and have yourself some fun.

Short video sequences are a good thing for ambiance, but it ruins the rrythm, you're always in the middle of playing when suddenly, "oh i've gotta wait for the end of this cinematics to continue what i was doing". QTEs are, as always, useless and boring, especially during the first hours of the game. Some animations also ruin the rythm by being too long too often (burning a net with materials, opening boxes). And difficulty is pretty low, for foghting sequences (if you aim with your mouse, you'll headshot most of the ennemies very easily). or for puzzles/exploration (always pretty obvious).
Beside these defects the game is pleasant, graphics are really nice, and controls are good (some multi-platforms games can't be played without a pad, that's not the case here).
In the end, I can see a lot of defects, not a lot of qualities, but I took pleasure playing it, that's the most important thing, but it does not make it a great game, only a good one.

This journey is fantastic because it's gradual, and the player doesn't really even realize the shift until near the end, when Lara starts verbally taunting enemies and is fully confident in her abilities. Unfortunately, she's the only real character in this game- the rest are cookie-cutter stereotypes pulled from any other genre. Is this game just a ripoff of Uncharted? Maybe- the only thing that sets it apart is the upgrading system of weapons, where your weapons can pick up new and interesting powers along the course of the game. You can level up lara herself, but this is much less interesting- you end up getting lots of powers you could care less about and don't really use that often. Luckily, the gun upgrades are a bit more meaningful. I found the gunplay in this game to be highly satisfying, if only because I enjoyed challenging myself by using the bow much more than I used any other weapon. Finally, the ending to this game is honestly the greatest moment in gaming I've experienced this year. It was worth all the hours I put into beating the single player (only 11 hours) in order to reach the one climactic moment. I recommend this game to just about anyone interested in a mature journey (last note: there were quite a few F-bombs in this game, so be aware if you're sensitive to things like that). Expand

This is the best game out in 2013 so far, graphics, story, combat, sound everything is AAA quality and the new TressFx was just lovely and i didn't have any performance issues(on ultra settings-on a amd build pc). I went all out woke up in the morning and i just couldn't leave until the game finished.

The biggest disadvantage of this game is childish difficult. Really, "hard" level it's very easy. No challenge at all.
Executions of enemies gave my the most fun of the game. Besides that, I found nothing interesting for myself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't help it but compare this to the Resident Evil 6. I don't get it how the new Tomb Raider, a QTE fest game that destroyed its fanbase with over the top emphasis on bland mediocre combat, "puzzles" that are offensive to my intelligence and clunky platforming/lol so epic action sequences is so highly praised while Resident Evil 6, a QTE fest game that destroyed its fan base with over the top emphasis on bland mediocre combat, "puzzles" that are offensive to my intelligence and clunky platforming/lol so epic action sequences is considered VERY bad by so many reviewers and players.
I would understand if the reviewers would be bought but the players act the same way (RE6 has somewhere around 5 on metacritic user score, Tomb Raider has freaking 8.6). I'm not saying that Resident Evil 6 is a great game, I'm just saying that both game should be lower as they are, especially Tomb Raider which is a reboot that changed most of the things we love about the series (ACTUAL exploring, solving grand mechanical puzzles for 1 hour straight, little action and most of it with animals, great platforming, instead we got around 6 two minute puzzles, fast "keep pressing a direction and she'll do the platforming for you and about 70% of the game at least are action sequences where you have to shoot at people in an unresponsive, non-satisfying combat). Resident Evil 6 at least has a decent lenght and didn't change much from the action roots of RE5, yet they still bash it for that. So Tomb Raider would be a much better game if it did its own thing, that is focus on survival (horror) elements, for example the time when you go into the wolf cave or fall into the river of blood, or if you had to hunt to eat and cure yourself (like in MGS3 Snake Eater), and of course focus on grand puzzles again then the game would have an identity of its own and wouldn't just be a bland Uncharted clone.

I hope this devs don't go back to their Legacy of Kain they would just completely ruin it.

Best adventure of the last years, even if the story is rushed and there is too much action for old fans of the series, the game manages to entertain, however the dlc-policy is a joke.

First off, this is a Lara Croft game, plays like a Nathan Drake game. I would like to point out that. But it has some better elements, and some worse elements than uncharted series. Uncharted was more of an Indy action, but this is more gloomy and tense, and it really makes you wonder what's behind the island. Scenery is just as impressive as uncharted, but puzzles are a little more weak. platforming parts are the same, but the animations could be better. Side characters are pretty weak compared to Uncharted, but the main "villain" is more appealing. Now I said this much Uncharted because this game sadly took A LOT from it, but it's still a solid game, because Uncharted was a solid game. And we get to play with our favourite heroine, see her emotions. Now I really wish this game was more of a survival game or more close to older Tomb Raider games, but I think they will make that in the second game. Buy this if you are a Lara Croft fan, she still raids tombs and you won't be disappointed if you like her. Expand

But not with this new reboot. It gained my attention as it brought along a new fresh story. Started out with Lara from being just an ordinary girl having to fight her way to become a warrior in order to survive. Not to mention the graphics of the game had already caught my attention in the first place and I was excited when I learned that Square Enix was involved. In new Tomb Raider there are only 3 save slots as far as I can see. Not much if you ask me, it happened to me few times that save file was corrupted and I am afraid of that in games with few save slots. Another major cons for me are DLCs, multiplayer, achievements I just do not like them), DRM-Steam (I know some people do not mind, but I prefer my games DRM-free). And of course the biggest con of all QTEs. Stealth kill in many games is just one key, but in the new TR you have to press F and then A&D repeatedly...It is like playing Guitar Hero. Also there are no real puzzles or anything like that, the game helps player too much. There is too much of combat and almost none raiding of tombs.
I really do not like QTEs, in older Tomb Raiders there were traps and you had to crouch or jump over them but there was no flashing key on the monitor, it is too immersion-breaking for me.

Other than that I like the game, new Lara looks great, graphics are nice, voiceacting is great, story is like LOST:) I would give probably more if it was not named Tomb Raider. And much more if it was named Tomb Raider but instead of QTEs and cutscenes there was more climbing on the mountains and raiding tombs...

Tomb Raider [2013] is an interactive visual novel about a girl with gravity defying hair who ends up stranded on an island in the South Pacific after an accident. During her quest to survive she will be injured one way or another about every 5 minutes or even killed if she does not correctly executes a quick time event.

The this new Tomb Raider with a completely new Lara Croft character is amazing.
Lara has personality now. She is not just an attractive but blue blooded and cold supermodel than before. People complained here in the their critics that this game more like a cinema than a game. Partially I agree with them. But this impact disappeared for me as I played the game after 1-2 hours. But this interactive cinema thing gets you much closer to the character of Lara and as you found the diaries of the crew you can find out their stories and feelings too. (There is no courage without fear.)
This game has a strong emotional impact. It grabs you in the story if you let it. The new voice actress of Lara (she makes the movements too) did a very great job. I really was worried about her. I always looked twice my steps to "help her". The atmosphere and the graphics (with the partially fixed bugs and glitches) of the game is excellent too.
(I am writing this during my second play-trough, and I think there will be more too, so it is not just a first impact.) I highly recommend this game, but first forget the previous Lara Crofts and Tomb Raiders.
I "only" gave a 9/10 score because I also tried the multiplayer part. That one is not that good. It is playable, but you have to die way too much to improve your character. A cooperative like multiplayer game would be much better. (Just like in Mass Effect 3 or in Left for dead.)

The soundtracks and typical Tomb Raider theme was very noticeable and it's good to see that they haven't lost the classic gameplay that previous Tomb Raider games had. I also enjoyed the choice of weaponry (especially the bow) and overall the storyline was pretty good.

Things I dislike about the game:
Firstly, the AI are completely stupid. Throughout the game you are completely bombarded by waves of enemies which come in groups of around 7-15 people at a time. The fact that Lara Croft doesn't get killed by the obviously overwhelming number of enemies is beyond me. All the AI seem to do is run at you, whilst a few archers sit back and pop in and out of cover. Enemies are predictable and far too easy to kill. I would have preferred less enemies with harder difficulties. It also seems stupid how enemies without armour require multiple bullets to die, the damage settings in this game seem completely wrong. The next thing I dislike is the voice acting. Lara Croft sounded somewhat awkward throughout the game. I'm British myself and so I understand the British accent very well. There was something about Lara that was almost cheesy in a way. For example, she would often talk to herself to give you clues as to what to do next, something nobody would do. In addition, she seems a bit too confident when in combat. Shouting things like "You won't get me this time!" sounds really corny and any human alive (after what she's been through) would be exhausted and probably a lot more afraid of countless enemies with fire grenades and guns/bows running at you. I also found the game in general to be extremely repetitive. I was rushing through the story avoiding hidden loots and in-game secrets just so I could get the game done and dusted. After a few hours I was bored of the linear temples and climbing obstacles, it just seemed that every time Lara got near an exit, the exit would stupidly explode or something meaning you have to take an alternative route which is another 10 minutes of puzzles and rope climbing...

The game was fun at times, but unfortunately not my cup of tea.

The game is beautiful. "TressFX" is actually a nice change from the plastic hair helmets. The gritty edge to this re-imagined Lara is also a welcome change.

What ISN'T nice is that the core of what made Tomb Raider games fun is largely gone. The wonderful acrobatic puzzles and free roaming is basically gone. It's more of an adventure game where you need to jump through hoops to see the next sequence and move the story forward. It is also obviously a console port (eg: "Mash these buttons to fight" or "Press X" then sit back and watch the show...) which is highly disappointing at best and maddening at worst!

While I'm curious to watch the wonderful graphics and see if there is a worthwhile story to be told, I'm already at a point where I have to jump through hoops and find just the right combo of keys to hit in the right order to win a fight. And the fight just starts over and over until I learn by trial and error what the combo is. So, it's likely I won't bother finishing.

One more uninspired style over substance console port. If you like console style games, you'll probably like it but I'd suggest buying the console version and using the controller, etc. For PC users, don't be lured by the pretty graphics give it a miss.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is quite reminiscent of Hitman Absolution. It was gonna be an amazing sequel (or a reboot in this game's case) that would send an already amazing series to further heights.
However, real game fell quite short of the expectations.
Just like Hitman Absolution, the Tomb Raider is rendered beautifully. Many sceneries look as if they came out of a big budgeted movie. I was also quite amazed with the new TressFX that made Lara's hair look like oiled strands from straw brooms.

Unfortunately, similarities with Hitman Absolution do not end there.
Hitman Absolution was criticized by long time fans due to the game playing more like Splinter Cell than a Hitman game. Tomb Raider has an endless supply of QTEs and some of these can be downright frustrating. Also, the numerous cut-scenes take control away from players. These cut-scenes are so many that after a while, you begin to see Tomb Raider more as an interactive story rather than a game.
Tomb Raider does have few puzzles but other than one puzzle involving wind, nothing was all that memorable or satisfying to solve.
Characters, other than Lara, are very shallow and very unmemorable. There's no bond between those side characters and the player. So when a certain character sacrifices himself for Lara and Lara gets upset, player feels nothing for that character and wonders just who the h*ll he was.

This game could've been great and on par with Uncharted series. However, it seems the dev were more focused on aspects of the game that would invite hype rather than constructing a solid game. This was supposed to be a reboot that allowed veterans and new players to connect with Lara on an emotional level but this was made difficult by too many cut-scenes, lack of narrative and straying away from what made original series quite special.

If we look at another island survival game, Far Cry 3, it encouraged you to explore by spacing out the main story missions throughout the land. Tomb Raider doesn't do that.

The story is a great at explaining her origins, but honestly I don't think it explained the bridge between "just an archaeologist in training" to "extreme tomb raider". I've been told that the graphics are average, but I personally think it looks great, especially compared to old tomb raider games. Overall, this isn't a game I'd buy full price. I'd buy it on sale, which it happens much more often than other AAA games.

I played the original TR back on the PS1 and have touched a couple of the other ones and was never really that sucked in. This one however is amazing. There is a mix of stealth, gun play, puzzles and story that kept me entertained the whole time. Such a huge improvement that I can't wait for a sequel now.

This game is extremely shallow. It boasts that there is character development throughout the game, but the character changes immediately after the 1st scene. The action sequences are cheesy. The story line is awful.

The gameplay mechanics are actually fun, but for me, the story was so cheesy and predictable that it disrupted any sort of value it could have had.

This game is stunning. During playing through this game I had almost a constant adrenaline kick from falling, sliding down, jumping etc. You have to think quick to grab on to that cliff to avoid falling etc.. so in addition to some very nice fighting scenes (favorite weapon bow) you get some scenes where you have to think how to move on.. small puzzles like how to break a wall or get outThis game is stunning. the reinvention of Lara Croft could have easily gone completely wrong. Square Enix obviously realized how crucial it was to get this right. I feel they captured the essence of Lara Croft perfectly. I really enjoyed this triple A title as it kept me on the edge of my seat with it's over the top action scenes which in all honesty is quite reminiscent of the Uncharted Series. There where frusting elements in this game such as the quick time events, the boss fights where disapointing, the "tombs" simplistic and short, but a fantastic reboot for one of my favourite gaming characters.

Crystal Dynamics did a great job on fleshing out Lara as a believable character, the majority of the game mechanics where well designed and fun, the environments looked stunning

Thanks CD for not stuffing it up and I hope they take on board the many criticisms from the fans without going too far in the opposite direction and lose what made this game so very very good.

Looking forward to the next Lara game.

I think it still remains the best part of Tomb Raider. The game Tomb Raider are emotions, stories, suspense, heroism and cruel. There is one most successful restart for Tomb Raider.

The old Tomb Raider games are average at best in my opinion, so this game came as a surprise for me. It has everything a good adventure needs and is a little more realistic and serious than the original games, which makes it so much better. The only bad thing I can bring up are the quick time events.

Best remake of a video game series and one of the best games of 2013.

I really love this game. The graphics and the environments are marvellous (especially if you can max them out), gameplay and combat are very enjoyable, so are exploring the island, the tombs, or finding relics...I really like Lara's character, she's more of an average girl forced into a hostile world instead of the somewhat unrealistic and "bloated" character of the past.

Just a couple of cons: the campaign is too short, too many quick time events, and also didn't like the supernatural element in the story, it seems out of place.

However, it is definitely a must have.

If you want a ~10 hours long interactive movie, which has average story and enough explosion to make even Michael Bay satisfied, this is your title.
If you want to play a game which has more game play elements than a platformer from the '90s you should skip Tomb Raider (or wait for a sale).

While not every promising idea Tomb Raider has is pulled off successfully, it nevertheless turns in a tense and memorable ride that combines modern game design with its forebears’ adventurous spirit in some exciting ways. Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
