I greatly enjoyed this game. I was emotionally involved in everything Lara did which ranged from killing her first person to truly becoming "Lara Croft" as we know her. But, as is becoming a recurring theme with all of my reviews, I must state a few issues. The combat is mostly solid so lets start there. Running around in third person and busting baddies' armor off is truly an addicting experience, especially when it's combined with a great progression system where you choose which weapon you specialize in. One issue is that it feels slippery, the targeting system is lackluster so nothing feels really solid. Speaking of slippery, the platforming can lead to a bunch of cheap deaths because of odd momentum mechanics which make you feel like your "slipping" off of edges a lot of times. Towards the end of the game, most of the platforming mechanics felt old; especially the climbing pick-ax because it's speed is underwhelming to say the least. Overall, if you're going to play this game, then play it for the excellent acting and writing but do not expect an overly phenomenal gameplay experience. Expand

This is a great game. The graphics are breathtaking, I think the best I've ever seen in a game. The combat is tense and feels natural. If you don't know beforehand which key you have to mash or hit at a precise time, then you're not going to be able to complete the quick time event. This means you have to play through them at least two times. The biggest con for me, however, was the story. I won't give spoilers, but I was hoping for some rational explanation, not some mythical story which assumes that there is a separate soul which can go in and out people. Who the hell still believes that? Expand

This was actually my first introduction to the Tomb Raider series, which may influence my take on the game since I haven't been playing them since '96. I really enjoyed this game, a lot, but that is not to say it isn't without it's flaws, it has a few, but I just really enjoyed the game, and I hope that the sequel addresses the shortcoming of this game. I played it on PC, so some of the shortcomings in gameplay may be due to the porting from console to PC.

Storyline: It was admittedly simple and a little far fetched, but you didn't need a complex story if it was told well, which I think it was. Yes it could have been better, how this island is so lost, and nobody seems to understand the fact that it's a death trap despite the apparent almost daily shipwrecks (as suggested by the sheer number of fresh corpses)? The plot wasn't so bad, and I liked that finding bits of the puzzle in artifacts and journals filled in what was going on. Some of the things that happen to Lora seem a little over the top, and some of the wounds she suffers during the game clearly would have become life threatening very quickly, yet somehow they are dealt with quite easily and never cause trouble again.
The characters could have used more development, but I did feel some emotional attachment to some of them, I just wish they had a bit more depth and played a bit more of a part in the game. The prologue comic helps a bit.

Gameplay: There were elements of the gameplay I loved, and elements I hated. The movement was good, it was fluid and fairly intuitive, most of the time the camera angle was good and I could make the correct moves, but there were some times where the camera did not give me the necessary view and it was a guess as to where I was going to end up.

The first person aiming of weapons was a very good decision, I was able to quickly switch from third person, to an over the shoulder view with a first person reticle that switched my movements to first person, allowing me to aim at what I wanted and run backwards, strafe, etc. This was brilliant, and all I'd ask for is that zoom give me the actual weapon sights instead of just zooming in a bit. The weapons themselves could have used improvement, they lacked realism, which to me is important. The bows needed realistic trajectory, firearms didn't exhibit bullet drop, only suffered from a fixed range. A better variety of weapons was needed, my only choices were what to upgrade with my salvage. I would have preferred my choices to include a variety of different guns, and matching ammunition, but then I have been spoiled in that regard by the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

Melee combat was a little difficult for me, probably due to my relative inexperience with it, and the porting process taking something designed for a console controller to a keyboard, making it very clumsy. Having played the game and finally gotten a better understanding of it, and getting a mouse with extra programmable buttons, I think I could do better with the melee fighting now. The moves were cool and when I could get what I wanted to happen work, it was pretty neat.

The game really requires you to search around and make sure you find everything. Many of those items and journal entries do a lot to explain the story. This is of course a good thing.

The dreaded quicktime events, there were a few, they were annoying. I almost didn't buy the game after reading some negative reviews that complained about them. The quicktime events weren't that bad. They weren't that good either. Some of them took a few tries, then I made it past and continued enjoying the game. The problem was that for the PC, it was sometimes a really clumsy combo of buttons to press at very exacting moments. A tiny fraction of a second before or after the icon lights up, and nothing happens. Exceedingly frustrating. Thankfully there were fewer of them as the game went on, and I hope the sequel sees even less of them.

Aside from that, the gameplay and combat were a bit easy. Hard was not that much of a challenge. A handful of enemies could usually be dispatched quickly and easily, although the bow made it quite fun. The puzzles were a disappointment, while sometimes what I needed to do wasn't readily apparent, once I saw it, the puzzles were very simple. If you use the survival instincts to get hints you'll make it really boring.

Level design and atmosphere: The level design was very good, albeit linear. But I had fun exploring and everything was beautiful. Each location had something interesting to offer, and was constructed well and logically. The atmosphere was great, the feeling of isolation, vulnerability, and loneliness, contrasted with this huge beautiful world and the number of dangerous enemies, created a unique feeling, similar to my favorite, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. The music was minimal, but good, it matched the atmosphere, never overpowering the environment, I thought it was just right.

Overall, it has become one of my favorites

    Story

The Story in Tomb Raider is a pretty interesting tale and although not the best story written, it offers up some intriguing aspects, as well as great character development from Lara. Id say she is one of the better written characters i have seen. Unfortunately the same cant be said for her companions.

    Gameplay

The gameplay is great and feels so smooth and the combat is very fluent and fun. The progression system, and upgrading your guns/equipment is satisfying, and i loved upgrading my gear only to reveal that it allowed me to access previously unreachable places. The Raiding of tombs was one of the best parts of exploring the island, and the sense of wonder when you find one is great.

    Graphics/Presentation

The Definitive edition offers up some nice graphics and smooth gameplay, as i rarely had any hiccups throughout my playthrough. The lighting effects are great and textures were smooth.

Tomb Raider was a pleasant surprise for me, with fun combat, great exploration and leveling, as well as a sense of wonder from exploring the tombs. The collectibles are also well done as they are not simply rubbish to collect and offer unique backstory and intriguing lore about the past cultures on the island.

Even though many will say this is a Uncharted rip off, it is really well executed. It changes the classical gameplay to a more Uncharted/Resident Evil type, but keep the climbing Lara must do, maintaining that Tomb Raider feel.

The game is visually stunning with tons of aesthetic ambience, the setting treated as a character is highly developed. Lara is well designed, fun to play, smart and without those awful stigmas from older games.
But the game is full of AWFUL quick time events and difficulty spikes that are misplaced and unbalanced which drag the game down from what should have been a fantastic game!

The premise is fairly well set up. Your ship is sunk in a typhoon and you and other survivors are stranded on this mysterious island. Cliche? Sure. But it doesn't mean it's bad. It does a good job of setting up the atmosphere of the game.

The graphics are extremely good, especially if you've got the hardware muscle to efficiently render the GPU-punishing TressFX feature (dynamic hair physics simulation). With TressFX, Lara's hair is arguably the best hair of any game. But I digress... The environments and atmospheric effects are top notch, and character models are well made. Particle and physics effects are also very good. Granted if you have the hardware to back it all up.

Gameplay is... decent. The gunplay and stealth aspects are solid in their own right, but the presence of the hated quick-time events dampen the experience by a fairly significant margin, considering the over-abundance of QTE's in the game.

In general though, Tomb Raider is a great reboot of the franchise that honestly improves upon it, but perhaps in order to appeal to the current mainstream gamers, quick-time events have made a comeback...

No, it is not what made the "Tomb Raider" series great. It is not the very good TR1, let alone the amazing TR2. The character in TR2013 just has the name Lara Croft. Names sell.
But TR2013 is a good game in itself. The graphics are still outstanding, despite being already a year old. The skin, the movement and the landscape sometimes come relatively close to the Final Fantasy movie.

Basically, you explore, run, jump, kill. There are some quicktime events, too, but not too much and not insanely difficult. With autosave and mostly fair design, the game normally is not frustrating but doable. The gameplay is not completely linear. Sure, you normally go from area to area, but in the area itself you sometimes have to find your way, especially when you have to use your equipment (hook, arrows etc.). In TR2, the huge areals where pretty demanding (and satisfying). TR2013 is a lot easier now, but it is fun nevertheless.
At the end of the day, the mix works.

Z drugiej strony jednak, czy każda seria (a zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o gry) nie powinna się rozwijać wraz z biegiem czasu? Na to pytanie musicie sobie sami odpowiedzieć… Jeśli chodzi o długość nowego Tomb Raidera, to przejście gry zajęło mi około 9 godzin. Lara Croft powraca w wielkim stylu.

Character design was decent, as was voice acting, but unfortunately the dialogue writing was pretty uninspired, though luckily not terrible. The world is also designed very well - both realistic and aesthetically pleasing, with terrain variety reminescent of CoD 4. Traversing it is generally very pleasant, although climbing routes are way too obvious for my taste, with white paint marking almost anything you can use on your way.

The progression throughout the game was quite satisfying, both in terms of the available movement mechanics and in terms of combat. The available weapons and the encountered enemies both got gradually more and more advanced, in what seemed like a natural way. Combat in general is quite satisfying as well, although sadly, is way too easy. Even at the highest (3rd) difficulty level, it's trivial to headshot everyone with a bow most of the time, and it's very difficult to get killed (unless you're grinding an achievement which requires you to tackle an enemy with a rifle...). Although it's not much of a challenge, it's still quite fun, and an optimal amount of hidden locations and collectibles makes the world even more enjoyable to explore.

Overall, Tomb Raider is a solid adventure game in every aspect, and a modern benchmark for the genre.

Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
