The Tomb Raider seriously needed a reboot, and Crystal Dynamics did an awesome job. However, to cater to the new "impatient" and "less hardcore" generation of gamers that prefer "hand-holding" game play, the devs have killed most of Tomb Raider series' essence.

The Tomb Raider seriously needed a reboot, and Crystal Dynamics did an awesome job. However, to cater to the new "impatient" and "less hardcore" generation of gamers that prefer "hand-holding" game play, the devs have killed most of Tomb Raider series' essence.

    First the Good parts-
Presentation is flawless, fans will love how Lara looks. Her pain, emotional trauma, the panic and fear she feels, is very believable. Never been so connected to a game character before. Lara is extremely vulnerable but she becomes deadlier as the game progresses. Good job.
The combat is nice, on par with current gen the minor RPG element is present in a very acceptable level. And best of all, NO Leap-of-Faith moments like previous Tomb raider games. Camera work is excellent, which most 3rd person games still fail at accomplishing properly.

    The Bads---
Like i said before, the Tomb Raider element seems missing. This game borrows more from Uncharted series than it does from its predecessors. The puzzles are brain-dead easy, and every secret thing is shown and indicated with obvious symbols like chalk signs. Its like a huge Neon light showing you the way.
The movement and jumping mechanics are plain bad. This is 2013, where if a character can maneuver mid air like Metroid & Contra of NES era, its plain unacceptable. Sure its not as simplified as Assassins Creed series, but stuffs like stuck in a uneven cliff/terrain and off animations simply doesn't cut it.
Tomb raiding is added through off mission tomb raiding spots which are clear afterthought, placed there just for namesake. Game should have been renamed "Lara Craft origins" or something, the "Tomb Raider" element is almost nonexistent

    An awesome game for
    1) The current gamer generation that likes a game to be a walk in the park
    2) Old TR fans who are tired of the age old game play

    A bad game for
    1) Hardcore Tomb raider fans who love challenge and puzzle+tomb raiding element
    2) retards

Overall I liked this game. Good story, good graphics, good control. But I kind a disappointed with the Tress-FX feature. As a newbie, in my opinion, "it's just a hair, why on earth so heavy? nVidia PyhsX can do better than that". I hope next time this feature can do better than that.

I remember the first game Tombraider played...back in time, in year 2000...for that time i was fascinating about the game and i group every year playing TR.I can say i fall in love with Lara.I remember first steps, was in the evening of 31 december when i play first time Tombraider...about 2 hours alone and another 4 with a best friend. And so i spent the new year then...don't care about the party, just found it a game call it Tombraider.

Tombraider 2013...what a change, but still, sometimes, i play old tombraider series, for my guilty pleasure.I
I'm not a fan of new games and throw away old series...no way! Contrary, some new games like RE(another child-start game) are not my style...and maybe for this i think TR is the best remake of a game ever.Undoubtedly.

This game explain HOW LARA BECOME A TOMB RAIDER! And is very great accomplished. From beginning was only a explorer, a simple and naive-scary girl but when circumstances demanded, became an adventurer and...with apologies, a killer-girl of criminals. But only because it was forced...

The new TR is just what a game need to be.Amazing graphics, sound, story, puzzles and challenges. The words are little and poor in this case, you need to see, to play TR to feel. This is not a technical review well, dx11 look amazing this is a heart-touching review of TR.
And about a compared with...another ordinary game, NO! Would be a blasphemy...remember TR was the first game with this gameplay and all the games who next about TR was inspired by the game TR.

In the final...play new TR...feel all whole evolution-storygame of Lara in a evolution game changed from a good and great game into a ambitious, provocative and sensational game...
    Welcome back Lara Croft!

Easily the best Tomb Raider game. There are a mountain of positives and a mole hill of negatives. I've been a long term fan of this series and one of those people that bought the original of PS1. Seriously, the level of detail is simply stunning and I don't own a better looking game. Set this to Ultra and you'd think you were watching a movie. The soundtrack, gun noises, attention to detail as Lara moves, the story telling, the cast, the dirt on her face, the wind in her hair, etc this list could go on and on. I'm tempted to give this a 10 because it really is that good. As I often say in my reviews, I do not understand other peoples take on games. How can this game (at its absolute worst) be anything less than a 7??? Seriously, those who hate on this game (or games in general) need a mirror. Sadly, the internet is making 'The World' a place for unnecessary venting. My opinion may not be right, but marking Tomb Raider a ZERO is utter BS. Such a shame that there is so much hate in modern day society. Expand

This game is able to display hair very beautifully with a beautiful women/model. It almost looks like each strand of Lara Croft's hair is moving with the rules of physics. If your down with killing hundreds of men with a compound bow and climbing mountains with your climbing axe, well then this game is for you!
The story is awesome too pretty good length of single player action.

Reminiscent of the Uncharted series, the new Tomb Raider seems to focus more on action than puzzle elements, with the few included puzzles being rather simple affairs, but it's just so fun to play that these little shortcomings are easy to overlook. Definitely one of the best games I've bought this year. This game goes from a bold and engaging story to a sense of adventure, action and emotion that pushes one to want to play some more.

Though I dislike the fact that, on PC, TressFX technology really kills the performance of the game if you're running it on a Nvidia graphic card. Just set the hair quality to normal and i runs smoothly.

Thanks CD for not stuffing it up and I hope they take on board the many criticisms from the fans without going too far in the opposite direction and lose what made this game so very very good.

So basically, yes this game is somewhat like the Uncharted series, and that is a very GOOD thing. It's still Lara Croft, it's still Tomb Raider, and the types of puzzles we use to see in previous TR games are still to be found, except there's a lot more action, more story, more characters, more immersion, more of all that makes a game good.

Wrexmer is complaining about cut scenes and quick time events. I must say, both of these elements were extremely well done in this game, blending in well with the action and context, they are not disruptive at all. I can imagine some people have an absolute dislike for cut scenes and quicktime events, fine, but if that's not your personal case, then I say, you will love the cutscenes and quicktime events. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, this game has THE VERY BEST quicktime event implementation I have ever seen. So there.

There really is nothing negative I could say about this game. It could have been longer, but only because it is so excellent you can never have too much excellent gaming, right? I clock my playthrough on medium difficulty at 14 hours, which is very decent.

Overall, I cannot say enough good things about this game, it is a SPLENDID release, and for once, fully worth the full retail/launch price of $49.99. I almost feel guilty getting it on special for $12.49. Yes, it's that good.

(you do not like the cut scenes you can skip them for the whiners here below)

Also I could play many hours without getting frustrated about parts which you had to try over and over again like so many other games which are out there. Well balanced and well polished.

Whilst you play you earn different kind weapons which you can upgrade depending the time you spend finding the necessary pieces.

This is finally a game which uses save points as should, you die you do not have to play another 15 min before getting back at the point where you died.

Yes this is a total different kind of Tombraider (which the developers already mentioned so do not complain about this), almost no puzzles to solve like in the previous Tombraiders, but much more story, action and shooting.

    Congratulations!!!!
Having looked forward for ages to the release of a much loved game, I wanted to express my amazement as to the ease at which you have managed to ruin a whole series of games, on turning something that was enjoyed by many into yet another brainless shoot-em-up aimed at god knows what market which is already saturated by strikingly similar games (the cheap pornographic sound effects of Lara dying are beyond belief). The fact that the graphics are good (though utterly and unnecessarily gross. Once you've seen one severed head/arm/leg/torso.........) does not hide the fact that there are no challenges involved. All this apart from the fact the replacing the usual "mummy threat" has been substituted by having a rather brainless go at the Russians and Japanese does not make for an interesting storyline.

All-in-all, you have done the Tomb Raider merchandise no favours. "Raiders" like my self may have bought this game but I doubt they will buy another. I most certainly will not.

What's keeping it from being perfect:
    - overused QTEs in the first hour of the game,
    - lack of replay value: story is the main point of this game, once you know it and done all the puzzles it's really no point in playing it again,
    - lack of difficulty even on Hard mode, after the first hour you pretty much steamroll everyone as you go,
    - they confuse Lara Croft with John Rambo at times, you are supposed to kill dozens of enemies in a single area, wave after wave (and it's hilariously easy even on Hard),
    - not enough stealth elements (they seem to prefer the guns blazing approach).

In the end, it's 10-15 hours of a really well done game and by all means worth the 15-20$ price tag on sale these days.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is quite reminiscent of Hitman Absolution. It was gonna be an amazing sequel (or a reboot in this game's case) that would send an already amazing series to further heights.
However, real game fell quite short of the expectations.
Just like Hitman Absolution, the Tomb Raider is rendered beautifully. Many sceneries look as if they came out of a big budgeted movie. I was also quite amazed with the new TressFX that made Lara's hair look like oiled strands from straw brooms.

Unfortunately, similarities with Hitman Absolution do not end there.
Hitman Absolution was criticized by long time fans due to the game playing more like Splinter Cell than a Hitman game. Tomb Raider has an endless supply of QTEs and some of these can be downright frustrating. Also, the numerous cut-scenes take control away from players. These cut-scenes are so many that after a while, you begin to see Tomb Raider more as an interactive story rather than a game.
Tomb Raider does have few puzzles but other than one puzzle involving wind, nothing was all that memorable or satisfying to solve.
Characters, other than Lara, are very shallow and very unmemorable. There's no bond between those side characters and the player. So when a certain character sacrifices himself for Lara and Lara gets upset, player feels nothing for that character and wonders just who the h*ll he was.

This game could've been great and on par with Uncharted series. However, it seems the dev were more focused on aspects of the game that would invite hype rather than constructing a solid game. This was supposed to be a reboot that allowed veterans and new players to connect with Lara on an emotional level but this was made difficult by too many cut-scenes, lack of narrative and straying away from what made original series quite special.

I liked the QTE in this game. They provide the opportunity for some visually impressive action. Something that's hard to achieve in normal control mode. The only thing I missed was the LC signature tune which should have made an appearance at least occasionally. Highly enjoyable and my personal Game of the year 2013. Well done Square Enix & Crystal Dynamics. Other games I recommend are The Witcher 1 & 2. Expand

I personally have only had the chance to immerse myself into only one of these boob fests and that is Tomb Raider: Underworld. While a good time it never managed to shine bright on my gaming shelf. And this new one is something I wanna talk about now.
One of the things to take note off is the brutal violence. And this is where it got messy. This game could have pulled it off if the script could mix in with this aspect. I thought it was cool to see this tipe of violence and darkness to the game but it mixed like oil and water with the actual script! They confused me by telling a mild adventure story with some mild characters and then throwing an F-bomb or some grotesque violent image to my face. It was incoherent and weird. Imagine watching a classic fun Indie movie and then seeing him say this ****ing and impaling someone. That was a major turn off for me since at first I didn´t understand what was off about it.
Another thing is the survival aspect that was portrayed at us in an awesome intense way in a poster where they show Lara tying a peace of cloth to her wounded bloody arm. And it actually delivered at some points where you saw Lara all messed up and hurt in the rain fighting a pack of wolves or surprisingly by just sitting at a sad campsite in the woods! But at the same time it got tuned down when Lara just jumped of a building at fell through an entire mountain just to shrugg it off afterwards. That was a coherence aspect of the game too.
A thing that really made this game shine was it´s enviroment and graphics. The snow and rain where sharp and you could almost feel the wind in Laras skin while it blew her off a bridge (****ing Himiko).
The gameplay was fluid too, Lara moved realisticly and there wasn´t something more badass than using the bow. Besides what I said about Lara weirdly taking massive destruction falls of death, those setpieces where pretty amazin (plane crash FTW).
So... was this game the reboot everyobody has been waiting to play? Maybe, for some but the definite most awesome one they could make, no. Script and game incoherences made it confusing and sometimes awkward. So if you want to play a game focused on telling a full adventure story go play whatever Uncharted game for the fifth time.
    I´m giving Tomb Raider a 7 outta 10.

The graphics, environments, and weather effects are beautiful. Everything about this game is high quality and consisting of high production values. Its only flaws are the excessive amounts of quick time events and the overusage of cutscenes to tell a surprisingly good story. There are also many extras to collect.

The only reason I'm not giving this one a ten is because of the irritating amount of scenes where you have partial control of the character, and have to push Lara foward Jurassic Park style. Such parts should be cutscenes, not playable scenes. That was a slight insult to the player's intelligence and do more to annoy than to advance the story.

This is what I expect today's AAA titles to be like. Beautiful graphics, nice game-engine cut-scenes, decent story (although quite foreseeable) and a fair distribution of checkpoints. Also, the "new" Lara Croft is much more believable and likable that the "old" one.

THE GROT REVIEW CRITERIA: After a long time writing reviews like an anus, think its time to set a few bad habits straight: Stop insulting designers. Show some respect for the design process and getting games in circulation. Hence (1) No Red scores. (2) Game scores as follows: Bad Game 5/10. Poor Game 6/10. Mediocre Game: 7/10. Good Game 8/10. Great game 9/10. Stella Game 10/10. To get 10/10 it must be a game that can be (theoretically) play-able for 1000+ hours. Not only great but near endless fun. Great game. The first thing that comes in my mind in reviewing this game is that the reboot is not a combat game and it is still great. The story line is amazing and you never feel the urge to skip cut-scenes as you are too connected to the game. The only con to this game is the MP, which isn't bad. But also nothing special, also it doesn't fit TR in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tomb Raider is amazing. It has a great storyline, amazing gameplay and breathtaking graphics, even on the low setting. The puzzles and platforming are enjoyable, and the combat is fun as well. The multiplayer is fun, although I think they could have done something else, like co-op or climbing races, rather than doing regular multiplayer like everyone else. Also, I love Lara's accent and how she says 'bastard'. Surprisingly, going back looking for collectables was actually very enjoyable, although after about 30 hours of the campaign I've still only found 83% of the collectables... Hunting is fun as well, although I believe it should have been more imperative. You only have to do it once. I didn't really enjoy the previous Tomb Raider games, but this one is amazing. I love the characters as well; Father Mathias and the Solarii are pretty awesome. Himiko the Sun Queen and Yamatai is an actual myth, not just fiction. In conclusion, Tomb Raider is an amazing game and if you haven't bought it yet, you need to buy it now! Expand

Way too many QTEs, No real game play mechanic and not in anyway affiliated with the original games makes Tomb raider just an generic cover shooter. The game tries to make it open world but fails at it horribly. The story is a linear piece of crap which throws a cut scene at you every 5 mins. And its not about puzzle solving or anything.

The different area stages of the game provide reasonable scope for completing a variety of side quests which aren't too imaginative, they aren't the boggling puzzles or acrobatic mazes of early Tomb Raider. My main criticism would be the slight repetition of the side quests and a short length of the game overall. Saying this, it may have grown tedious if it went on much further, or the visual quality of the game (which is top notch) may have suffered in exchange for more content.

Not a huge amount of replay value, the multiplayer I found a bit dull and doesn't really work very well, certainly not the strong point of the game. Non the less a decent game for the initial play through.

The trailers and early gameplay is shameful. It appears as though this is a linear game and very heavy on QTE's.

While this is true for the first part of the game (~1 hour) this is done to great effect and since this is a reboot, allows for the development of the character. You truly see Lara shine even her voice actor's better than the last.

Now I don't generally like reboots but I can see taking the franchise in a different direction was actually the best idea anyone could roll with. This is a more dark (not "dark knight" dark but more serious in tone and for the first time A TOMB RAIDER GAME WITH BLOOD AND BRUTAL DEATH SCENES).

It's more of an RPG and campfires help to serve as Hubs which you can explore and look for caves or "tombs", upgrade your character with a similar system of killing animals for XP (like Far Cry 3) and travel to other parts of the world. The game's huge and the campaign is ~20 hours, and then you can free roam. The only DLC I'd recommend is getting a few of the SINGLEPLAYER skins, MP map pack(s) and the tomb dlc. The others can be either earned in the game (skills) or are not that great.

The game's music is surprisingly good and easily beats the last. There's a lot of drama and it's quite gripping. The graphics are sensational and it's ported by Nixxes (the same guys that did Hitman: Absolution and made the Deus Ex: Human Revolution ports). Extensive graphics options, lots of tweaking and PC friendly controls. Although there are button prompts, this game immerses you so well there's nothing to really flaw.

Well actually, there is. The voice actors while Lara and her enemies are great, the rest of her crew isn't quite "there" yet. They don't sound mediocre but they don't sound great either. They've got some accents and for the most part they're fine. You still care about them but all the same when you hear Lara's voice you're like... why can't the others have voices on the same level?

There's tons of bonuses and I really liked upgrading my character. Lots of these upgrades were useful and tricks you learned. You really feel like you're playing with an inexperienced Lara. They've changed the story but again, better. She's still English but the Croft Manor and such isn't here. Nor are there vehicles to drive lol. This doesn't matter this game is easily the pinnacle and the top of the Tomb Raider franchise. Fans and non-fans will get appealed, and no fan can deny how great this game is. They don't sexualise her either and the game tends to be mature (most of the time). Still most players will look at her butt most of the time as she's crawling or climbing. Speaking of which all the movements are motion capped (like the last game Underworld) and again helps with the immersion.

In some respects it's similar to Uncharted but it's still distinctly a Tomb Raider game. In some ways, it's better than Uncharted and if you never got to play Uncharted or wanted to (due to not having a PS3 or access) this game will do the job. It's slick, accessible and incredibly fun to play all while holding the Tomb Raider name high and making great efforts to be a cinematic adventure.

The cinematics aren't too long or boring and they're frequent at the beginning, they help to explain a lot as well as build up the rest of the game. Combat's revamped too and while it can be repetitive at the beginning if you don't do main missions and stick to side-quests... the new tricks and vast amount of unlocks, serve to make combat that comes later less harder than it appears to be and far more fun to dish out finishers and sneak around. There's different play styles too and you're rewarded as such. It felt like Batman: Arkham Asylum at times, which is not a bad thing and they integrated cover really well. The focus is on exploring but combat doesn't feel as cheapily tacked on as past games and it's far better for this 3rd person... type of game.

Lara's is shocked after her first kill and the next moment she just cuts to pieces a hundred men without regrets (wut?). Some areas are well designed but the whole experience just feels like a long, tedious corridor filled with an unnecessary large number of ennemies (as well as scenaristically unconceivably great). The QTE moments are a pain, you never really know when you are in control of the character or just expected to press a single key. The skills seem to have been implemented at the last minute since they have absolutely no impact on the gameplay. Graphics are strange, oscillating between really really cheap (models of some flags and plants which are just planes with a png botched on it) to sometimes impressive (the interiors are a success) but they never really convey depth. There always seems to be a problem of depth of field, the backgrounds being sometimes a little better than plain pictures on a skybox. The narrative thread is just boring, the decisions of Lara are just pulled out of thin air and I sort of lost interest halfway through the game. All in all, play it if you're an absolute fan of the series but don't expect a huge background and revelations, nor an intense storytelling or interesting gameplay, the artistic direction is kind of nice though and is the only thing worth saving in this game. As almost everyone else has said, this is more of an action 3d platformer game than a puzzle Tomb Raider game. There are a number of optional tombs to raid, which are essentially small puzzle rooms, but the rest of the game is linear and story driven, but it allows you to travel back and forth to areas to do further exploring.

It's mechanics are mostly good, save for the rather many QTE sections which, despite their flaws, make the game more cinematic. I like the fighting and the jumping is well done (unless you want the old masochistic jumping which I was never a fan of) if a bit controlled.

The graphics are amazing, one of the better looking games of this year and it runs surprisingly well on a decent rig. Lasts about 12 or so hours, more if you decide to explore every nook and cranny. All in all, I had fun with this, probably the only TR game I had fun with since TR2 and the isometric Guardian Of Light.

The controls, menus, and even the object interaction was good as well. If we look at another island survival game, Far Cry 3, it encouraged you to explore by spacing out the main story missions throughout the land. Tomb Raider doesn't do that.

But with the flaws aside, the combat was fun, and I loved climbing my way up or down the rocky island. The story is a great at explaining her origins, but honestly I don't think it explained the bridge between "just an archaeologist in training" to "extreme tomb raider". I've been told that the graphics are average, but I personally think it looks great, especially compared to old tomb raider games. Overall, this isn't a game I'd buy full price. I'd buy it on sale, which it happens much more often than other AAA games.

The cinematic scenes in this game are incredible and they do a very good job of keeping your heart racing throughout and even put Michael Bay films to shame! The story is among one of the best I've ever played (up there with half-life!) and does a good job of getting the player attached to the characters. The entire time you will be rooting for Lara to survive and interested in her development from young woman to a hardened survivor. This game exceeded far beyond my expectations. If this is how Tomb Raider games are going to be in the future, I will be buying every single one! Expand

Well, there's some combat too, and it's not bad. I guess Tomb Raider has always been about level exploration than anything else, but if so than there's no justification for how small the levels are. Excellent graphics though. Good voice work, not too many cheesy lines in the dialogue. Overall, not the greatest game, but if you really like cinematic and crazy fast paced explosion then go for it. This game feels like playing a movie, but in a good way. The action is fantastic, the game transitions between gameplay, cutscenes, and interactive events seamlessly, creating an experience that is exciting to watch but still keeps you on your toes. There is not a lot of dialogue, it is mostly action, but the action is done well.

The exploration is so-so. The levels sort of alternate between linear action levels with no need to explore, and slightly more open levels with loot to find. This keeps the game from getting too repetitive, which is nice. Acrobatics are pretty standard and not very challenging.

The weapon upgrade system is not great, but better than nothing I guess. You find Scrap which you use to upgrade your weapons, but it doesn't have a huge impact on how you will be using them. It is also pretty mindless: you just loot all the containers you see then craft what you can at campsites.

The RPG mechanics are an unnecessary add-on. You get XP from killing enemies and finding treasure, and spend the XP on skills, most of which are not game-changing.

This game tries to present itself as survivalism, but that is just a theme. You can hunt, but it only gets you XP. There is no need to look for food, water, etc. The game even has the ususal health regeneration that action games all have these days. The only resources are scrap and ammo.

Story is not bad. I am not a big Tomb Raider fan: they were too silly and sexist for my taste. This one is better, the main character is more human. The change feels a lot like comparing the James Bond movie Casino Royale to most of the earlier ones: this is more gritty, more human, and more interesting.

All in all, fun for a 14 hour playthough, and maybe another in a few months. It was entertaining, as action usually is, but don't expect more than that. I recommend getting it on sale.

The characters were all tolerable if not fantastic. The storyline is mature enough for older adults and it's complex and rich enough to enjoy and get sucked into it. Models were done very well. Lara's new image is excellent and appealing and her character is compelling. QTEs were not at all a problem for me. In fact, I think they did an excellent job with them. That's coming from a PC gamer too. There was nothing exhausting about gameplay really. Even tearing open a crate manages to remain satisfying.

The only negative thing I can point is the 'screen bob' during movement which is slight enough that I can ignore it, but I wonder if it would be a better play without the added effect. I'd like to see more 'bob' in Lara's chest considering she is wearing a camisole shirt. There were also some gameplay elements that seemed like they belonged on an xbox, but they were manageable still.

I played it through the first time on the hardest setting without too much difficulty. I'm giving it a 7 because it wasn't well polished for the PC release and they still have some room to grow this title into something better.

However, all of the positives mentioned above are eliminated by the inept, frustrating, clumsy-beyond-belief and unplayable QTE's (Quick Timer Events). These absurd and enjoyment-ruining inserts bespeak a laziness and lack of confidence on the part of Square Enix/Eidos in their product. I believe they feel the need to "increase the challenge" of the game by inserting this ridiculous and unnecessary interactive cut scene construct into most combat sequences. Accomplished Game developers rely on a working difficulty progression, set by the player at the game's onset. I played this game (first time through) on EASY difficulty and was not able to get by the Wolf Fight in the Wolf Lair.

I play games for enjoyment, first, last and all in between. Square Enix/Eidos has ruined my enjoyment by including this disastrous QTE insert into what could have been a fairly enjoyable game.. I rated the game at 3, in an act of generosity for the inclusion of those aspects mentioned in my opening remarks. Had I rated this game on enjoyment alone, I would have justly given a "0".

Having never played a Tomb Raider title before, I know for a fact that this stands on its own, but I strongly suspect it serves its function as a prequel equally well.

I can't possibly imagine why anyone would rate this game poorly. There are a few "Quick Time Events" as others seem to be calling them, but I felt like they were a good contrast to the normal frenzied firefights and exploration while still making me feel in control of what was going on.

Going into Tomb Raider 2013 my expectations were kind of high. I've played a lot of games since the first Tomb Raider including sequels that were somewhat underwhelming. I think the team brought Lara Croft into the new age of gaming very nicely. The story was done very well and while it was somewhat predictable, they played the mystical stuff out well like the world wasn't naturally filled with ancient Japanese goddesses. Also, getting to know young Lara and watching her grow into someone more familiar was great.

If you've played any of the Uncharted series then the gameplay might seem pretty derivative but in a good way. It was a pretty familiar formula of some light platforming, shooting, and puzzles thrown in here and there. All were done well enough and have a good amount of polish, however I would have liked to see more tombs and varying levels of difficulty in the puzzles. I know mass market games of today play to the slightly more casual gamer, but in the age of the internet, people that had issues with puzzles could have just looked them up. Also, since the tombs were separate from the story anyways, some really long and challenging tombs would have been awesome. I would have really liked a side story that maybe tied all of the tombs together or just had a tomb that took longer than 5 minutes to get through. Also, quicktime events are starting to get old, especially when they're overused and I think this game was slightly guilty of quicktime overuse. It didnt ruin the game experience by any means but sometimes these events just take you out of the game more than anything.

The game pacing was done really well too. I felt that you unlocked things at a good rate and the story kept moving along well. At one point I thought the game was nearly over only to find out that I was just passed the half way point. At about 9-10 hours the game was still a bit short but if they had tried to make the story longer, I think I would have become uninterested in it. This is where I think the opportunity to make longer and bigger tombs with higher difficulties could have added to the gameplay while not forwarding the story or trying to overextend it. Also, I should point out that I only completed 71% of the game when I beat the story so you could probably get a few more hours at least if you are really looking for everything.

Multiplayer is worth mentioning I guess. It does seem like tacked on and I found it somewhat absurd that there are so many DLC purchases for maps and skins in multiplayer considering how shallow it felt. It wasnt horrible and I did enjoy the time I spent with it, but from what I played, I didnt see anything so new or exciting. If you really enjoyed the game I'm sure you could spend a few hours in multiplayer as well.

Overall I had a lot of fun going back to the franchise after so long and I have to say, Lara is hotter than ever. I'm really excited at the prospects for a sequel to this game but my expectations are going to be much higher. If they released a sequel with another good story, updated and improved upon innovative gameplay, added even hours worth of tombs to raid with more rewarding treasures, and even if they got fresh with multiplayer by adding some coop tombs to raid filled with baddies to fight together as well as puzzles that required teamwork and rewarded you nice treasures, that game would be an easy 10/10.

This game deserves a 8.7 for just the enjoyment level. Its not the deepest gameplay but the story grips you from the start and develops very nicely. Its not without fault and I really expected more tombs with difficult puzzles but in the end I had fun and thats what counts for me.

First and foremost, this is a beautiful game. The art design and visuals are exceptionally well done, as are the animations. Combat is fun, if shallow, and there are plenty of items to search for to keep completionists busy. The plot is swift moving (for the most part), the dialog is well written and the voice acting is great.

My main criticisms come down to the tombs being way too easy and there being a general lack of replay value. The game is relatively linear and plot-driven, so you're going to have a similar experience every time you play. The action set pieces are numerous and super fun, but I can only imagine they wouldn't feel nearly so exciting the second time around. Also, the game is designed so that you will have every single skill and upgrade by the end (as long as you're picking up salvage regularly), so there's no point in focusing on different specializations.

Tomb Raider really falls into the interactive movie camp, and if you look at it that way it really is one of the best the genre has to offer. When held up against other games it definitely has some shortcomings though. I'd recommend picking it up, but maybe only when it goes on sale.

Quick time events: There are A LOT OF quick time events but at least they were not as annoying as in Battlefield 3. If you hate quick time events you shouldn't buy this game. I haven't played games that would have this many quick time events and it took me 30 minutes to get use to it.

Cut scenes: I didn't have problems to tell the difference between cut scene and gameplay. There was only one part where I thought cut scene was still going and fell to my death.

Combat: AI delivers no challenge. It was really easy to headshot everybody. Once AI spots you it will know where you go. Even if you try to sneak away, their guns are always pointed toward corner or cover where you are and they will walk toward you until you shoot one of them or they can see you.

Controls: I have no complains about the controls. Lara takes cover automatically which takes little bit time to get used to but it works well. She always goes where I want and never does something completely opposite.

I don't mind. I quote Hilary Cooper "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away". Rarely have I seen more beautiful world design, animation, facial animation, voice acting and graphics. I've definitively never seen all that in one game. Lara is simply gorgeous because she is no longer solely a sex symbol. In terms of character development she can be compared to Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2. However you may ask if it's not the actual gameplay that counts, what not just watch the cutscenes? You could but you would never reach the level of immersion the game has to offer, it wouldn't feel like an adventure if you don't explore. Besides the gameplay is a lot of fun, it just doesn't stand on it's own. As for the price, if 50 euros scare you then you can often get 50% off on Steam. Totally worth it. Expand

It switches between puzzles, platforming, and enemies and has a story that feels more like it belongs in a summer blockbuster than a video game, complete with plot holes and heart pounding action sequences. It did feel a bit repetitive 8 hours in but not as repetitive as, say, Portal 1. Also the multiplayer feels tacked on. Just saying.

This wouldn't be a review if I didn't talk about the quick time events. Yes, they're there. And no, you won't have to take 500 tries to do them. The problem with the quick time events is that you'll have to quickly go between mashing the arrow keys to pressing F to E. Strangely, most of the quick time events happen at the beginning of the game. Either that or I just got used to them.

Even though Tomb Raider can't seem to make up its mind on what kind of game it wants to be, it remains the kind of game that kept me up way too late night after night (and not because of Lara's chest), so it's at the very least a good one.

The combat system isn't terrible but neither is it terribly unique. Minus the bow combat, I could boot up Max Payne 3 for something significantly

The combat system isn't terrible but neither is it terribly unique. Minus the bow combat, I could boot up Max Payne 3 for something significantly better. The stealth events are much more interesting, allowing you to slowly pick off your enemies from afar or up close. This carries a great deal of the gameplay, but it feels much more linear and carried than a game like Dishonored, which will drop you off in a sandbox filled with your soon-to-be-victims and a variety of ways with which to dispatch them or letting you sneak past them entirely. With this game, you're given a few interesting options and pretty much have to massacre everyone in your way to get by most of the time.

The game is at its strongest when you're climbing, swinging, and exploding your way through the environment. Movement in the game really is quite enjoyable, when it occurs, but that brings me to my next point. Raiding tombs is not a highlight of the main story rather, it is offered as an auxilliary objective (which you should nab at every possible opportunity). It's disappointing that in a game whose name very clearly implies the desecration of sacred burial ground, you will only really be doing so when you have time to take a break from generic third-person-shooter action. Instead of offering a plethora of crypts full of railings, walls, and ropes with which to make our way about, most of these aspects are placed in the outside world where I really don't feel like they fulfill their potential. So, odd as it is to say, don't buy this game if your hopes are firmly set on it fulfilling its name. Other side objectives include finding relics complete with information about their usage in history and salvage which can be used to upgrade weapons, alongside a skill point system that lets you customize Lara's abilities to some extent.

The game's biggest offenses come in the form of quick-time-events and overly cinematic gameplay. I love a good movie, but not when I expect it to be a game, and the first couple of hours are chock full of "Press F to not die" scenarios and other varieties of "gameplay" which serves as little more than a reason to keep your attention focused on the game. I'm okay with a few QTEs in, for example, climbing, where it feels like part of the movement and not a cheap excuse for gameplay mechanics, but the majority of this game's QTEs are just unnecessary and annoying.

    **Minor spoilers follow**

Tomb Raider was advertised as a story about survival, which it definitely is for the first two or three hours. After that, all that remains of the idea of "survival" are a few questionably useful skills. For example, the first time you kill someone, Lara reacts as any humane person might with disgust, shock, and fear. Literally less than two minutes later you are gunning down small groups of men like a cold assassin, and not three hours later you're taking out rooms full of them. It really tears apart the survival theme that the developer was trying to push and doing a fairly good job of, QTEs aside during the first part of the game. It doesn't feel like a story about survival and adaptation, just a story about a woman who fights to survive until she gets her first taste of blood before becoming completely feral.

Taking over from the story about survival is the story about constantly finding your friends while fighting through an endless army of savages who theoretically all washed up here on crashed vehicles because there aren't any women on that island. Then it takes a somewhat jarring twist towards the supernatural because, Tomb Raider and it sort of feels like the gameplay it just doesn't know what it wants to be.

This game is average at the most, nice going from game developers to make action & adventure game for casuals. All these climbing and small puzzle things that this game contains are outright boring and don't serve any other purpose than leveling up Lara to get some more skillpoints. Skillpoint system is old and doesn't bring anything new to the gaming. Developers really need to start thinking about new possibilities to improve these kinda games. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tomb Raider does NOT have all of the quick-time events and cut scenes people make it out to have. The plot is pretty juicy, with some very unexpected moments. I never imagined the Sun Queen's guardians would turn out to be real. The setting is beautiful and very spooky at times. Some of the textures get a screen-door or somewhat check-board look sometimes. The AI know exactly where you are. Even if the enemies can't see you, they still will fire at your exact location (if they are switched on). Mathias is a good villain. I found Lara's expedition members to be lovable, except for Whitman (you're supposed to not like him). 8/10 because of the relatively low replay value and multiplayer that doesn't do too well. The game is a good buy for $15 or under unless you can re-sell it. Expand

The reviews stating that this game doesn't have the same "feel' as the previous TR games are all correct. This game is much more visceral, open, 'realistic' and has vastly better voice/character acting. There were some scenes that brought me nearly to tears they were so incredible.
Stellar graphics, game play mechanics, level design, AI and story.
This game has earned a very rare 10/10

OMG the freaking quick time events!! It destroys the game! I really want to love this game, but as soon as I get lost in the enjoyment of discovery, I am yanked out of it by some generic "bridge falls out from under me" or "the rope I am hanging on snaps all of a sudden" event which leads into a stupid and un-enjoyable QTE! I can't stand seeing a branch go through Lara's chest or a pipe through her head one more time. This is how I imagine the "Uncharted" series must play, which is why I say away from PS3 like the plague. I am upset at the butchering of a game that has so much potential, EVEN THOUGH I GOT IT FOR $5. Buy it is it gets real cheep. Expand

Quick time event destroy this game. Makes it "tiny"..
Actually i was into the game, a little bit tired of all this "push exactly this to do exactly that, its the only way!", but still, I was enjoying the game somehow. And then, I walk around with my gun ready, expecting a wolf, and when it appears, she puts away the gun and get bit.. "it MUST happen, no way around!", so u have to push

And then, I walk around with my gun ready, expecting a wolf, and when it appears, she puts away the gun and get bit.. "it MUST happen, no way around!", so u have to push "rightleft" some times, and then kick with "F", and then u got bit in the neck, and have to start over. Really??

its not only irritating, its childish, like a kids game.. "first u press a, then u press b, then repeat a couple of times". There is NO freedom, u get handcuffed and have to do exactly (very precisely exactly) what the screen tells you to do, if not, do it over and over again!

But like I said in the start, it had potential, I was drawn into the game, to bad "the handcuffs" ripped me out of it, and made me sit here angry writing a poorly written review, just because im frustrated of how they have abused the quick time event..

btw, cut scenes did not bother me that much, because its not something I HAVE to master to get the game further on..

Story was extremely fun, Most fun I have had in a while to be honest. Watching Lara get the crap beat out of here is a little depressing though. You get used to it after a while though.

Is it game interesting? No, I don't think so. It's enough boring. There are a little choice, if be more correct seen of choice. A lot of cut scenes, scripts and one-way-to-resolve makes this game boring.
Second one it is perfomance question about. Okay, I understand and agreed, that release the game was promoted ATI Radeon Graphics cards. Okay. But some time later, on sales and after

But some time later, on sales and after some patches, it's still unplayable on mid-level nVidia graphics cards (450-560 series). If select very low settings (exclude native resolution of display, FHD), it looks pretty ugly.
Summary: if you have a some free time and spare money, you could try this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tomb Raider takes a cliche consumed thousand times, theme and adds a boring historical-archaeological sauce.. Lara Croft starts the game as a smart reasonable strong enthusiastic adventurer who finds herself struggling to survive.. soon though she turns into a super legendary woman who can take entire alarmed armies of soldiers known as "the morons" on her own just with the slight theoretical training of her father-like mentor, Roth, who is a likable interesting character that was able to stimulate our sympathy and admiration.. Lara takes extremely enjoyable badass bow-takedowns.. Katniss croft makes you feel like a beast.. Although the stealth mechanics are not very original something in Tomb Raider still makes the stealth, in terms of fun, very enjoyable. Lara is also very lucky because most of the enemies she encounters have an IQ that ranges between 20 to 40.. the retarded enemies you meet in the game are not just stupid enough to worship a dead queen who they give a ton load of human sacrifices to liberate her soul out of her natural bitc*iness for her to stop the storms.. they also think it's very naturally healthy to slowly approach a person with a rifle and a shotgun in a ridiculous attempt to stab him with a knife.. Lara is also lucky cuz her magical pistol is given to her by Santa in her 7th birthday.. that's probably why it makes much more damage then a rifle or shotgun.. as the game goes on you start getting this irritating itchiness we used to get in Lost season 6.. the story gets lamer and more driven into the super-natural side.. Lara as she gets tougher and more brutal becomes also dumber and more pretentious that she has to end every sentence she says with "I have to end this" and with the less stealth in the later mission.. the game starts to feel boring.. and then....... a huge disappointment in the ending.. so in the end it basically turns out queen Himiko soul is stuck inside a statue or something so she has to consume hot young ladies constantly to slip out of the jail.. and would finally stop jerking around with people using those storms as long as they fully serve her homosexual fetishes for using white young women as blood fuel ..in the final scene we're back to the beginning, back to the boat. And everyone is safe and good.. except now they're only 4 and Lara is now stupid and superstitious.
Now that my soliloquy is done, I wanna note that although my review may seem critical, I did enjoy the game and currently in a second walkthrough, It's fun, The stealth and arrow kills are simply FUN. a lot of fun.. However, as a story-driven game, I find the writing very clumsy, The story is ridiculous, and with tons of plots holes.

While not every promising idea Tomb Raider has is pulled off successfully, it nevertheless turns in a tense and memorable ride that combines modern game design with its forebears’ adventurous spirit in some exciting ways. Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
